Transcript Overtired 286 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, welcome to overtired. I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here with my usual cohost, Christina Warren and Jeff Severns Guntzel and rounding out what is turning out to be a very Minnesota show this week. We have many, no St. Paul light. [00:00:20] Patrick: Thank [00:00:20] Meet Patrick Rhone [00:00:20] Brett: word? Hi, Patrick. Rhone. [00:00:22] Patrick: I, [00:00:23] Brett: Welcome to the show. [00:00:25] Patrick: I appreciate that quick correction. [00:00:27] Brett: Is it St. Police though? [00:00:29] What [00:00:29] Patrick: here. Uh, so, [00:00:31] Jeff: are you from. [00:00:32] Patrick: and St. Paul, uh, collectively referred to as the twin cities are divided essentially by the Mississippi river. Um, Minneapolis is on the west side of the river and St. Paul is on the east side of the river. [00:00:45] Um, my wife often says that St. Paul is the last Eastern city. Minneapolis is the first Western city. If you want to understand the kind of culture and, uh, and, and difference [00:01:00] between say old money, new money. Um, sort of feel of both cities, [00:01:07] Brett: Even just to be clear geographically, it is not down the middle of this state or the country for that matter. [00:01:13] Patrick: No geographically, that is not true, but certainly from a, um, from a general feel standpoint is a very easy way to kind of, um, come to one place and see kind of the, the division between east and west, uh, that happened, uh, as you know, the country was being settled further and further west, um, and kind of, uh, St. [00:01:41] Paul being the first of the two cities to be settled, it kind of held on to it’s very, um, uh, turn of the century Victorian feel. Uh, whereas Minneapolis has not met a building, um, older [00:02:00] than 10 years, that it is not willing to tear down and [00:02:03] Jeff: That is not willing to Clare down and erase from memory. [00:02:06] Patrick: Yes. Yes. They have no problem doing so whatsoever in St. [00:02:09] Paul, you would have like pitchforks and, and, uh, people with, uh, Firesticks, uh, trying to burn it down. If you [00:02:17] Brett: Does this seem accurate to you, Jeff, [00:02:20] Jeff: Yeah. Starting in the seventies when a lot of cities, but definitely Minneapolis. We’re like, Hey, it’s a new time. This kind of old stuff, that’s all ordinate. This is just old. Let’s get some new stuff going. And pretty soon it’s like, wait, what? I didn’t know new is going to be brutalist architecture. And like, you know, when, uh, you know, we destroyed so much of what, uh, would have been a real beautiful historic feel of this city and this downtown as specialty. [00:02:47] Brett: but Minneapolis has all the biggest buildings, all the tallest buildings. [00:02:53] Patrick: That is true. And in the state that’s [00:02:55] Jeff: that’s not a [00:02:56] Brett: that’s, that’s not nothing. [00:02:58] Jeff: Let me tell you some of my city, we got [00:03:00] some tall buildings. [00:03:04] Brett: So, I don’t know if you guys have ever noticed this, but, uh, we have a pretty heavy mental health bent on this show. Um, which is, which is, yeah, it, it, it happens on occasion. Uh, we have a whole corner dedicated to mental health, um, which is why I asked Patrick to be on this week. Uh, Patrick is the president of the board of mental health, Minnesota. [00:03:31] Is that right? [00:03:32] Patrick: That is correct. Yes. Mental health, Minnesota is a advocacy outreach and direct service organization, whose mission is, to , advocate for provide help for, and to really, help people, start handling, um, their, whatever mental health crises issues, whatever, uh, what they like to call before stage four. [00:03:55] Right. Um, that, uh, the kind of, one [00:04:00] of our main things is to help people identify

Transcript Overtired 285 [00:00:00] Jeff: Hello and welcome to overtired. I am Jeff Severns Guntzel and here with me today are Christina Warren and Brett Terpstra and, um, and I can see them, but you can’t y’all look great. It’s good to see ya. Let’s let’s do a podcast. [00:00:23] Christina: Thank you. It was great to see both of you as well and hear you, um, for, for the listeners. We’re not trying to be, you know, like exclusionary, we just don’t want to Polish a video podcast. We just don’t. We, we talked about it. [00:00:33] Brett: of these, one of these days, I’m going to get you guys to do a video podcast, but I understand the reservations. [00:00:41] Jeff: I did shower today. [00:00:42] Brett: We do fucking look good though. [00:00:44] Jeff: There’s [00:00:44] Christina: too. But like, yeah, I’m at this weird angle with where my laptop is. So [00:00:49] Brett: why? Why are you like your camera’s going up your nose? Why is [00:00:54] Christina: yeah, because I’m using the camera that is on my laptop rather than using the other camera, which is better positioned because I [00:01:00] wanted to stare at the screen and it’s on my lap. So. [00:01:02] Brett: I appreciate the eye contact. I will say like when you’re looking off screen and it feels like you’re just giving us the cold shoulder, just cause you’re reading your screen. It feels weird. [00:01:14] Christina: though I’m actually giving you eye contact, but it looks like [00:01:16] Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. And, and Brett, Brett listeners looks like he always does on zoom, which is like the elevator got stuck between floors. Like your head is in the lower half and there’s a whole, top half. [00:01:29] Brett: well, so cause, cause below, below my torso I’m I’m I, I’m still not comfortable with how much weight it, but on, [00:01:39] Christina: This is terrible audio. [00:01:40] Jeff: it. Sorry everybody. Sorry about that. Everybody just know that breaths just know that breaths a new headphone covers matches hoodie. [00:01:48] Brett: Oh yeah. My socks match too. I would show you, but nobody on a podcast cares what my socks look like. They’re NASA socks. [00:01:58] Jeff: You know, what’s weird is I looked over at my phone [00:02:00] just now and there are sponsors calling off the hook and that people that don’t even work with us yet, the one I get a sponsorship on this show right now, they’re just hearing this here and they’re going, you know, [00:02:09] Brett: some. What, what sponsors are calling Jeff? [00:02:12] Jeff: uh, it looks like I’m getting a call from, uh, is that ARP? [00:02:17] That’s one of them. Um, [00:02:20] Brett: Do you guys, do you guys get letters from the ARP? [00:02:24] Jeff: no. [00:02:25] Brett: I do regularly on the reg I get letters congratulating me on my retirement and offering me like platinum level membership with all of the perks that come for. What is it? 54 plus I’m 40 I’m 43. I’m [00:02:45] Christina: I was going to say, I was, I was like, as like, you’re not in any way, shape or form on their target list. I will say if I start getting things from them, that is when, you know, despite like my commitment to only being 29 forever. That that is when I will like, [00:03:00] be very upset and I will [00:03:01] Jeff: It’s not going to feel good. [00:03:03] Christina: No, it’s not. [00:03:04] Cosmetics are people too [00:03:04] Brett: can we skip way down our topic list to talk about Christina’s Botox and fillers? [00:03:09] Christina: We totally can. [00:03:10] Jeff: Yeah, sure. [00:03:11] Christina: If you want [00:03:12] Brett: So, so on our list, it says Christina spent $2,500 on Botox and fillers ask me anything. So Christina, [00:03:20] Christina: Yeah. [0

Transcript 284: Horny for Plain Text [00:00:00] Christina: You’re listening to over tired. I’m Christina Warren joined as always by Jeff Severns Guntzel and Brett Terpstra, and very, very, very special guest special guest. Um, uh, our friend Alex Cox, Alex, welcome to overtired. [00:00:21] Alex: Thank you so much for having me. This is very, very exciting. [00:00:27] Brett: we, we we’re as excited as you are. [00:00:31] Alex: And Christina, I threw some back channels. I found out that you, uh, were able to, or rather I got to be on the show with you instead of, you know, just these other two, two, I can’t even joke and call you losers because Jeffrey we’ve never even met on the internet. [00:00:50] Jeff: You can, you can, you can call me a loser even better. [00:00:54] Alex: No. And also I have a lot of questions for Brett later this week about bunch. And I’m [00:01:00] just so, so happy to be here, uh, with my, you know, finally with some of my Paris favorite parasocial relationships. [00:01:11] Jeff: Do we need to go back and meet on the internet before we can get any further here? [00:01:14] Alex: I mean, if you have a [00:01:15] Introducing Alex Cox [00:01:15] Brett: have, let’s have pseudo introductions. Alex, tell us, tell us in, in as much detail as you care to go into, who are you and why should Jeff know you? [00:01:27] Alex: oh, goodness gracious. The why is because I like to have friends over the internet more than real life. So, I mean, I guess that’s a pitch for French, but, uh, [00:01:41] Brett: Today’s episode brought to you by French. [00:01:43] Alex: Yeah, it’s something that I’m working on. Uh, the way most people know me from the internet is either from podcasting or being the technical director and producer at cards against humanity, which is a part of game for horrible people. [00:01:59] But [00:02:00] I no longer work there. I recently left to do independent podcasting and producing full-time and there’s a bunch of them of the most popular is due by Friday with Merlin Mann. I also have a podcast about robots and tech and ism, but isms, but mostly robots on relay FM. Um, and that is with Kathy Campbell and I’m starting a new project called factory settings, which has a secret RSS feed that I’m too self-conscious to share in public, but people can DM me on Twitter if they want. [00:02:38] And that’s all about our various forms of realities, like AR XR, VR, uh, but with no Bitcoin advice and no web three talk except to express, you know, doom and gloom over that. But, oh gosh. And I have a show with my spouse called two headed girl, and it’s all about gender and our feelings and [00:03:00] transness. So I think that’s it. [00:03:02] Yeah, that was a lot. I apologize. [00:03:05] Brett: No, that’s great. That’s great. And, and all of you have different formats for all of your shows. I feel like you are a, a podcasting. I don’t wanna use the word savant too lightly, but I feel like you really explore the medium in very creative ways. [00:03:22] Alex: Oh, thank you. I, I was actually, uh, going to immediately refute that because it did take me about a half hour to figure out how to use a chromium browser again. But I do, I honest to God, I am very, very passionate about RSS and, uh, um, distributing media over something that isn’t controlled by an algorithm as much as I love algorithms. [00:03:49] So yeah, I love playing with that format, whether it be podcasts or music or whatever the heck, but except NFTs. [00:04:00] No, no, thank you. [00:04:00] Jeff: Okay. [00:04:01] Christina: NFC podcasts. And, uh, in, in, in, in your future, um, okay. Before we get into our mental health corner, I do just want to ask this because this came up and I’m very curious, like this isn’t me being flippant. I’m like actually genuinely curious, like what your, your rationale is. What is your reasoning for not using any sort of chromium browser? [00:04:21] Like, are you, do you use Firefox? Do you use only like safari or are you like I it’s WebKit or nothing. And like, I’m just, I’m just curious about. [00:04:28] Alex: Mostly WebKit more so, because I don’t know enough about Chrome to k

Transcript 282: Nothing of Value [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, welcome to overtired you guys. Hey, everybody. Um, I’m here as this. This is Brett Terpstra. Hi, I’m Brett Terpstra and I’m here with I’m here with my usual [00:00:14] cohost, Christina Warren and Jeff severance. Gunzel how you guys doing? [00:00:18] I know it’s a week after Easter but we recorded ahead so sorry [00:00:18] Christina: We’re good. We’re good. I think, um, so we’re recording this no Saturday. So this is a, this is like the it’s weird. Cause, uh, I guess yesterday it was like good Friday and Passover and like, um, uh, like, uh, in Islamic, like holiday and something else, it was like all these like holiday, like, [00:00:37] Jeff: You got your Ramadan. You got your [00:00:39] Christina: Yes. [00:00:40] Brett: we all still had to [00:00:41] Jeff: got your Easter. [00:00:43] Christina: Yep. Right. That is kind of interesting, right? Is that, is that everybody’s still had to work? Although I had, there were a number of people who were out, um, I’d get up, which, uh, was, um, nice that the people would just like take that time or whatever, but, uh, [00:01:00] Have you had to see your parents yet bread. Are you going to have to like spend Easter with them? [00:01:05] Brett: yeah. In fact, I have a topic on our list to talk about how amazing I found this shortcut to having safe conversations with my parents. Easter did not come up because Saturday in between good Friday and Easter Sunday, I don’t at least a fundamentalist doesn’t mean shit. Like nobody cares about Saturday. [00:01:25] So, so we had our Saturday breakfast and if I had showed up on Sunday, there would have been some conversations, especially considering it’s the full moon. And this is a werewolf Jesus year. Like we would have had, we [00:01:38] Jeff: Not to your parents, [00:01:39] Brett: shotguns and silver bullet conversations. Um, [00:01:44] Jeff: where werewolf? Jesus. [00:01:46] Brett: no, But, my, my joke yet all day yesterday was that’s funny. [00:01:50] It doesn’t feel like a good Friday because. I can’t, I [00:01:55] Christina: um, [00:01:56] SEVERITY 1 [00:01:56] Brett: I’m sworn to secrecy, but, but [00:02:00] Oracle dev REL had a severity level one event and I worked til 9:00 PM on Thursday night and was up at the crack of Dawn on Friday to deal with this severity one event. [00:02:18] Christina: so you’re sworn to secrecy, but let me just back up here, cause we’re going to go into, and to mental health thing, and this probably might have something to do with it, but okay. This is, this is the dev role teams things. So this was, or no, I was going to say you’re not, you’re not an SRE. You’re not like on-call why? [00:02:33] Why are you on this? [00:02:35] Brett: our, our role in this? was communication with customers. [00:02:40] Christina: Gotcha. Oh, so, so you were not going to be at LaSeon. Okay. [00:02:45] Brett: I don’t know what that means. [00:02:47] Christina: Okay. Uh, so the, the joke here, a joke. So Atlassian has had an outage for some of its customers, like up to 400 of its customers. There’s been an outage that is at this point, I think about two weeks [00:03:00] long where all their services have been out like that lasting cloud has been out. And, um, it lasts again finally after like 10 days finally at the beginning of last week. [00:03:10] And now we’re this week, I guess we’re recording on Saturday. Um, finally addressed the situation and sort of apologized and, um, uh, promised to post-mortem basically the problem was is that they ran some sort of a script without testing it. It wasn’t. Um, uh, compromising some, um, uh, user data and some other things. [00:03:31] And so the situation that

[00:00:46] Jeff: name from really [00:00:48] Brett: me to list you in the show notes? [00:00:50] Jeff: Hmm. Oh, [00:00:51] Christina: F um, uh, Astros Astros, I guess. Cause, cause we need it for SEO purposes. Like I’m a big fan of putting fucking headlines and, and [00:01:00] putting fucking other things. But I also know that it can like hurt your S chances. [00:01:03] Brett: I, uh, I was talking with R w w so like all the podcasts on backbeat media, not all of them, uh, a few of them get together once in a while. And we talk about how to improve podcasts. And I brought up the fact that, uh, shows like some more news with Cody Johnson do extremely sarcastic ad reads, um, that, that are actually worth watching. [00:01:32] Like, they’re, they’re very funny to me. And, and I asked if we could get away with. Writing some more comedic ad reads and, and they were down there like, yeah, if your show says, fuck all the time, and then you don’t say fucking the ad reads, it feels like a real separation from reality. And, and most sponsors are okay with it. [00:01:55] So I would have to present copy for approval. [00:02:00] And I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to write comedy in a vacuum like by yourself, but you really, you need, you need at least one other person to bounce ideas off of. Uh, so if you guys weren’t up for it, I was going to see if I could, uh, hire my coworkers, Victor and Aaron, who are very funny people, um, hire them to be my little writers’ room and we could come up with some amazing ads. [00:02:27] Jeff: an overtired writers’ room? [00:02:29] Brett: I am. [00:02:30] Jeff: its own [00:02:30] Christina: Uh, no, this is the real question is like, like, does this come out of your cut of the pay or does this [00:02:35] Brett: this would be, this would be me. This would be me. This would be my own interest and funnier [00:02:40] Christina: I don’t care. I mean, I don’t care. I’m just, I’m just [00:02:43] Brett: Like I’ve tried to punch up our ad rates a little bit here and there, but, uh, but it is, it’s hard to be funny. I’m just not that funny on my own. how, how, how’s your mental health, Jeff. [00:02:57] Jeff: Oh, I’m doing good. I just spent a [00:03:00

Transcript Neurodivergent Housekeeping [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, everybody, You’re listening to overtired, uh, due to scheduling conflicts, we could not arrange to have both Christina and Jeff on the show at the same time this week. So, because last week was just a boys’ week with just Jeff and me, Brett Turkstra. [00:00:23] Hi, I’m Brett TURPs. You’re welcome to overtired. Because we had just done an all boys show. We really wanted to bring, uh, Christina in. So this is Brett Turkstra Christina and special guests, friend of the show. Brian Guffey. How are you? [00:00:41] Bryan: I’m tired. [00:00:43] Christina: You’re tired. [00:00:44] Bryan: I’m so tired. [00:00:45] Christina: You’re so tired. Um, you’re overtired. You’re also overexcited, right? Because you’ve got a new, uh, we’re going to go into mental health corner, but, but I, but I wanted you to be able to like, get out your excitement cause, uh, you’re [00:00:56] Bryan: Yeah, I am. very excited. I have a new baby on the way. Um, [00:01:00] it’s a little chunkier than my old baby. Um, and it is a new ma based based model max studio. And I’m just going to say that through the magic of. People I know. [00:01:12] And trade-ins, I’m blinking a base model Mac studio for $800. Babying. Damn, damn. Yeah. I’m really excited. so excited I can’t believe I have to wait almost the rest of the [00:01:24] Brett: month. You’re trading and I’m a Mac mini, correct? I’m one Mac [00:01:28] Bryan: mini. Yeah. [00:01:29] Brett: How much should you get traded for it? 400. Yeah. Okay. That’s what they offered me. [00:01:35] Uh, and then a couple of people on, on Twitter offered me 500 to sell it directly to them. [00:01:43] So I think I’m going to do that, but also my whole home automation system and my media server are still running off a 2012 Mac mini in my basement. Um, and maybe, maybe it’s time to upgrade that and just [00:02:00] like, kind of move down the chain a little bit. [00:02:03] Bryan: Maybe, [00:02:04] Christina: Yeah, maybe. [00:02:06] Brett: I [00:02:07] Bryan: have money now. [00:02:08] Christina: Oh, I was going to say, if you don’t have to get rid of it, like $500, if, if like you feel like you would get more than $500 in value out of it by having it and like maybe moving it down the chain, which [00:02:19] Bryan: I owe the [00:02:20] Brett: IRS, like $1,600 and I got that total and I’m like, cool, got that. No problem. And that is the first time in many years that someone has presented me with a $1,600 bill and I’ve been like, oh yeah, no problem. Cool. I’m basically rich. Now I’m basically a billionaire. [00:02:38] Christina: I love this for you. So are you going to buy Twitter? Um, uh, next, are you going to become a [00:02:42] Bryan: I was thinking like [00:02:43] Brett: maybe 5%, [00:02:45] Bryan: ma you don’t want to, you don’t want to go [00:02:47] 10 if it’s a little more than him, [00:02:49] Christina: I was going to say, if we do [00:02:50] 10, then we can get Brian, um, like more followers. Like we can like force like [00:02:56] Bryan: honestly. [00:02:57] Brett: Can’t we just do that with cash money without being on the board. [00:03:00] [00:03:00] Christina: I mean probably, but [00:03:01] Bryan: we want good [00:03:02] Christina: but the board be fun. [00:03:03] Bryan: Yeah, [00:03:03] Christina: Yeah. The board [00:03:04] Brett: we want, we want the good followers. Like [00:03:06] Bryan: all of the employees at Twitter, like now there was it’s their requirement to follow me. So [00:03:13] Brett: that word, so mental health. How about that mental health? What w

Transcript Overtired 279 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, welcome to overtired. We, we we’re short, we’re short a man we’re short a woman this week, so it’s me, Brett. Turkstra here with Jeff Severns Gunzel uh, hi. Hi. Hi, [00:00:16] Jeff. We, we are, we’re lacking Christina. She’s she’s going through some transitions at work and she needed a week. Uh, without overtired, I guess, I guess this show was just the, the one thing too much in her week. [00:00:34] Jeff: I will just say I’m new here, but Christina, I’m a see today. [00:00:39] Brett: We all will. It’s just you and me left to fend for ourselves. It’s like a. [00:00:45] Jeff: to systematic. [00:00:50] Brett: Oh, you know, I, stopped, I stopped doing systematic. I put it on hiatus and then decided it was, it was gone because it took so much [00:01:00] effort to schedule gas plan, interview questions, uh, execute, interview questions, edit. [00:01:07] Jeff: to ask you a question about systematic, um, as, as the final guest on that podcast, why did you stop talking so much to developers [00:01:19] Brett: Um, my interests went elsewhere. Like, uh, well, I mean, I love developers and I talked to a lot of, of my favorite developers. Um, I really wanted systematic to, uh, reach a non-tech audience. I didn’t, it was a tech show, but I wanted it to be about human interest and I wanted to talk more? [00:01:47] about mental health and queer issues and, uh, just things that weren’t necessarily developer centric. [00:01:57] It was, that was my vision for the show. [00:02:00] [00:02:00] Jeff: But what was interesting is you, you made a hard switch into those topics rather than, you know, entering them through, uh, the, you know, broad and endless and diverse developer community. It seemed like you just want to, I, as a listener, cause we weren’t, we weren’t friends yet. Um, as a listener, I was like, wow, he must have just really needed to get away from talking about being developer, a developer or talking to developers. [00:02:25] Brett: I don’t know at what point in the Pantheon you entered, but from the very beginning, systematic had organic farmers and actors and, and a lot of non-developer people. [00:02:40] Jeff: Yeah. Well, let me look at my, um, updated overcast app. I’m going to actually look back and tell you how this is such a great app, by the way. I’m just going to say that. Um, but we’ll keep, we’ll keep talking. So I’m okay. So here’s, cause here’s why I ask is I came on, it must’ve been 2013 [00:03:00] that I started listening to systematic, I think. [00:03:03] Um, and for me that was a Renaissance period in how I used my computer. I was returning to ways in which I had loved to use my computer, um, and making my computer more sort of central to my work and my life. And, and a lot of that was I, I hate the term, but a lot of that was about becoming sort of a power user. [00:03:25] Right. Um, I don’t love the term, but I totally, I embrace it for the sake of its universality. [00:03:32] Brett: Sure it’s easily understood. [00:03:34] Jeff: Yes. And, and I think probably I was listening to, um, the accidental tech podcast, which was fairly young at the time, mostly because I’m just love listening to John Syracuse to talk about, um, the tech and talk about, you know, like the real,

[00:00:13] Brett: Hey, Jeff. [00:00:14] Christina: Hey Jeff. . That was fun. [00:00:17] Uh, do, do do the Sunday, Sunday, Sunday thing, cuz that was good. Sunday, Sunday, [00:00:21] Jeff: Sunday. [00:00:22] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. [00:00:24] Brett: except we’re recording on a Saturday. We’re publishing on a Friday, but we’ll take It [00:00:29] Christina: It doesn’t matter. Look who doesn’t love monster truck. As on Thursday, Thursday, Thursday. [00:00:33] Brett: We’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge. [00:00:38] Jeff: Man, you know what? I recently went down, I know, you know, TikTok should be a sponsor. Uh, I, I went down a TikTok monster truck, rabbit hole, and I never went to one of those and I gathered they were fun and cooled. I had no idea how fucking cool those things were. that’s all, that’s the, that’s the end of the topic.[00:01:00] [00:01:01] Brett: So, uh, let’s have a mental health corner. Jeff, how’s your mental health. [00:01:05] Jeff: you know, it’s, uh, it’s pretty good. Uh, I’ve got like a nice, I kind of went through a medication balancing crisis [00:01:12] Brett: Yeah, I know how [00:01:13] Jeff: and, uh, And I’ve come out of that really. Um, just feeling very even, which is, um, something I don’t feel as much as I would like. And I’m sleeping again after I think two or maybe three weeks of getting around two to three hours of not deep sleep a night. [00:01:31] And, um, and so I’m, I’m like, I’m like much happier person than I’ve been in quite a while. How about [00:01:37] Christina: y’all? That’s fantastic. Um, I’m doing okay. I need to, and, and the thing is, is that for various reasons that I’ll be able to talk about more in the future? I, I, I, I can’t kind of do it right now, but I need to, um, get with my shrink and, and potentially actually just go to a sleep doctor and like one of those sleep study things, I had one like 15 years ago, but I need another one [00:02:00] because I feel like I need to get my sleep in check. [00:02:03] So. [00:02:05] Jeff: Yeah. So what is the, how would you describe the sleep? Is it just like you’re just wide awake [00:02:08] Christina: or, yeah, I mean, it’s one of those things and it’s like, I have a hard time getting to sleep and then sometimes once I do, I might sleep really long and sometimes I, you know, won’t, you know, I, I, I started doing this whole nap thing again, which I know probably isn’t good, but I have to better than I, but yeah, but it’s better than like, not doing anything. [00:02:26] So I think it probably needs consistency in other stuff, but I I’ve always had a hard time, like getting to sleep like insomnia has been a lifelong struggle. [00:02:36] Jeff: And so you’d done a sleep [00:02:37] Christina: study. Yeah. But it was, I was in college, so okay. You know, so, and I, so you were drunk. Yeah, exactly. Got it. Um, and so, yeah, so I, I need to do one of those again, cuz my, my shrink gave me some sort of sleeping pill that it’s one of those things where it’s

[00:00:22] Jeff: Woo. [00:00:24] Brett: I, I called in a couple days early just to make sure that it would actually work out this time. And instead of setting the refill date to be like exactly when I was going to run out of Focalin, she just went ahead and made it available on Friday, actually on Thursday, but I didn’t pick it up until Friday and I didn’t start it until this morning. [00:00:46] We’re recording on Saturday. So this is my first day back on Vyvanse after weeks of no stimulants and a year since I’ve been on Vyvanse and I’m really happy it’s it’s treating me well. [00:00:59] Christina: I’m so [00:01:00] happy for you. Cause that was rough for you. Like not having anything. Having to go through the stimulant withdrawal and having to go off of like the Focalin, which you enjoy. And I’m also dealing with the, you know, like the, I guess the fact that the focal ended increase the manic episodes. [00:01:18] Brett: The thing Focalin really gives you a jolt of dopamine. And I had really come to rely on, uh, having a lot of dopamine and then going without any stimulants, you have this glut of dopamine and it is, it leads to some pretty bad depression. Like there’s not, I don’t have like stimulant withdrawal, like they’re out of my system in 24 hours. [00:01:45] And there’s no like physiological, uh, issues with just going off stimulants, but the depression that’ll get you. [00:01:57] Jeff: Do you have to dial in the dosage or do you know [00:02:00] from previously using at [00:02:01] Brett: W we went right back to the dosage I was on when I had originally switched away from Vyvanse. And I had gone through like a couple of other like Conserta and stuff like that. But, uh, even at I’m at 60 milligrams, which I’m pretty sure is the max dose, [00:02:18] Jeff: Yeah. [00:02:18] Brett: at 60, like Vyvanse just isn’t that effective for me. [00:02:22] It is it’s the mildest of all the stimulants I’ve ever been on. So doing any less than 60 seemed kind of feudal [00:02:31] Jeff: Oh man. It kicks my ass at 60. I had to go to 20 I’m. Uh, I don’t use it right now, but I had to go to 20, which was surprised me. [00:02:39] Brett: that’s because you’re weak. [00:02:41] Jeff: Yeah. We [00:02:42] Christina: go ahead. Sorry. No, I know it’s a no tell, tell, tell me you tell me what happened when you were on. [00:02:47] Jeff: Well, two things. One is, um, I felt do you know, I used to describe being over-caffeinated as like, uh, I had this feeling of dread that something terrible was happening to somebody I [00:03:00] love right at this very moment. [00:03:01] Right? Like it was this like almost metaphysical sort of, uh, [00:03:06] agitation that, that coffee gave me 60 milligrams of Vyvanse me that and just made me almost impossible to talk to. Like, I was just so quick to respond, even if it wasn’t like an agitated response, just so quick to respond. And then I truly went into the like levels of hypertension. [00:03:26] I was tracking my blood pressure and everything. So I was like, oh, wait, I got to stop this. [00:03:31] Brett: Speaking of hypert

Transcript Overtired 276 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, Hey, Hey there listeners, um, I’m Brett Terpstra. You’re listening to overtired. I’m here with Christina Warren as always, but special announcement. You guys remember Jeff Severns Gunzel from movies such as the last three episodes. We have decided to make Jeff a permanent member of the over-tired crew. [00:00:28] It is now it is now an overtired throttle, which I mean, it kind of, so like the, the theme song goes tired. So tired over-tired, which is three. Like by the time you get to oversight, it’s it’s three of us. And like, it was always meant to be, this was meant to happen. So welcome, Jeff. [00:00:47] Jeff: Thank you. I’m honored. I’ve had so much fun talking with you all, and it’s been like a nice, a nice sort of, um, change in the, the rhythm of my, of my weeks. [00:00:56] Brett: would you, would you say therapeutic because that’s what we’re [00:01:00] going. [00:01:00] Jeff: No, it has been Therapedic. I mean, the first, the last episode, like I was in a bad space that week and, and that conversation really just kind of jolted me out of it. And the similar thing happened the next time. So I find that it’s I find that [00:01:14] Brett: when I contacted Jeff to say, Hey, this thing just happened and I lost two and a half hours of our audio. And I basically wasted your weekend. Jap was like, oh, cool, redo. I need a redo. He was excited. [00:01:31] Christina: me that honestly, I was going to say that was the thing that made me think. I was like, oh, he’s one of us, because I was like, I mean, I, I said, okay, well we’ll, we’ll do it again. But in my mind, I’m like, there’s no way Jeff is going to want to come back after. [00:01:46] Jeff: No, it wasn’t a waste at all. [00:01:47] It’s like Kevin, a good dinner party. And then being like, oh man, we forgot to record it. Can we do another one? It’s like, [00:01:52] Brett: You record your dinner party. [00:01:54] Jeff: I do have a dinner [00:01:56] Brett: Remind me not to go to Jeff’s dinner parties. [00:02:00] Oh my God. I haven’t. [00:02:01] Jeff: consensual. [00:02:02] Brett: have embarrassed myself so many times at dinner parties. Those never come out with me feeling good about [00:02:08] Jeff: Oh, I know it was my fear about doing a podcast like this. It’s just like, wait a minute. So that means it’s like a dinner party every week and those don’t always end well for me. [00:02:19] Brett: So, Christina, how’s your mental health? [00:02:21] Christina: Um, and that’s too bad. Um, I, um, it’s been an interesting week and, um, I don’t know, my, my, my ADHD is feeling kind of off the charts, but other than that, my mental health is pretty good. [00:02:35] Jeff: How about you? [00:02:36] Brett: I, uh, I am clearly depressed even though I’ve actually been functioning at what I consider to be a pretty normal level. I am currently convinced that Victor and Aaron hate me. Like they hate me. And I think even you and Jeff, uh, are making fun of me. And that is [00:02:56] Jeff: we are well, yeah, but not like on the podcast, [00:02:59] Brett: [00:03:00] That is a clear, it is a clear sign of depression for me when I feel like the world is out to get me and everybody hates me and, and it gets dark. [00:03:10] So I’m, I guess I’m, I’m depressed. I’m looking forward to, I’m almost to the point where I can start my Vyvanse again. Uh, get back on my ADHD stimulant. I’ve been treating my ADHD with lion’s mane and saffron, which is not terribly effective. It’s not great.

[00:00:23] Brett: and his house purse, which has caused quite the stir amongst the people. [00:00:29] Christina: We’ll want to know? Tell us more about the house first. [00:00:32] Jeff: Uh, now right [00:00:34] Brett: Well, let’s let’s, let’s do a quick mental health. Check-in Jeff, how you doing? [00:00:39] Jeff: Um, I’m, I’m, I’m doing good in many ways. Um, it’s been a couple, few weeks since I’ve had real sleep and, um, I’m, I’ve returned to something that hasn’t happened to me since the beginning of the pandemic, which is I, I, I started. Basically 1:00 AM. Um, I roll over, I look at the [00:01:00] clock 1:00 AM. I think I fall back asleep for a long time. [00:01:03] I rolled back over one 15 and I do this and I do this until I get out of bed at five. And, um, and it’s really, it’s just gotten to the point where it’s like, okay, this is, this is a problem, you know, but an hour ago we’re recording kind of early, not as early as for you Christina, an hour ago, I was just like on the couch, barely able to form words. [00:01:23] And so I’ve really pulled myself together. [00:01:25] Brett: are you taking ADHD meds right now? [00:01:28] Jeff: No, I [00:01:28] Christina and Jeff: am [00:01:29] Brett: So this is just, this is just natural Geoff sleep patterns. All five. [00:01:33] Jeff: apparently which again, I mean, one that again, I’ve told you this bread in the past, but like sleep was the one problem I never had. I could lay down literally anywhere and, and, [00:01:43] Brett: Even in Iraq. [00:01:45] Jeff: even in anywhere. Yeah. And fall asleep and falling asleep is still not my problem, but staying asleep. Oh [00:01:50] Christina: boy. [00:01:51] Brett: Yeah, I get it. I get it. I don’t know if it’s like, I’ve heard people talk about that being an age thing, like just sleeping less as you get [00:02:00] older, but I definitely have that problem started. Mine starts around 2:00 AM. Yeah. Between two and four, especially just every 15 minutes. Thinking, thinking it’s been longer than it has, although I’m cursed with the ability to always know exactly how long I’ve been asleep. [00:02:16] Like I can wake up from a super deep nap and know with within a 10 minute, like span what time it is. [00:02:23] Jeff: Actually that’s one thing I’ve lost. I just, you just made me realize that it used to be that I could wake up any point in the night and be like, oh, it’s two 30, roughly. And now I wake up and I think, oh, it’s two 30. I’m like, it’s 1130. [00:02:38] Brett: Um, so Christina, how are you? [00:02:40] Christina: So, you know, the role is a dumpster fire, even more than like usual right now. And, uh, obviously like this doesn’t impact me in any real way at all. Uh, but it is still one of those things where like, grant can’t stop watching the news. [00:02:57] Brett: Hmm. [00:02:58] Christina: I’m watching the news and then it [00:03:00] does have this weird, like add on effect on my mental health in so far as like, and we’ve talked about this before, but because I spent so many years in Jeff, I think you can probably relate to this. [00:03:11] Uh,

Transcript Overtired 274 [00:00:00] Christina: You are listening to overtired. I am here today with a I’m Christina Warren, by the way. Uh, and, uh, I’m here. Hey, Hey, Brett. Um, so this is, uh, is our second, uh, episode that we’re doing with, uh, Jeff Severns and we’re so excited. We had such a great time talking with him, um, for both the last episode and, and, and our episode last week that we had to continue this conversation. [00:00:29] So Jeff, Brett, how are you both [00:00:32] Jeff: good? [00:00:33] Brett: I am good. Jeff. So your, your last name is hyphenated, right? [00:00:38] Jeff: Yeah, without a hyphen. I [00:00:39] Brett: Without it’s like two, [00:00:41] Christina: see, and I, and I miss the Jeff Severns console. I’m sorry. I only saw the first half of that. I’m. [00:00:45] Brett: totally fine. I’ve just always wondered. Which one of those is your birth name? [00:00:50] Jeff: Uh, Gunzel and, and the weird thing is like, I often get emails addressed to Steven that are definitely, to me, they’re from people that I’ve like just met or something. And I don’t know [00:01:00] if they see the Severns and they decide I’m Steven. That’s totally what it is. Is it? Yeah, it’s so weird. [00:01:05] Brett: I called you Stephen for years. Let’s talk about Jeff for a second. Jeff, who are you? [00:01:11] Jeff: Um, I, I, I, uh, let’s start with the most immediate, um, sitting in my home office in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Um, I was a reporter for about 25 years or so, um, and then switched to something. I call investigative research. So I focus right now on the juvenile justice system in, uh, one particular county in the U S and am working to develop ways to see inside the system so that you can see. [00:01:43] No, what questions to ask the premise being that there’s so much sort of opaqueness in the, in the juvenile justice system. Of course, that’s really important in many ways and for many reasons, but that when you start doing a work of an investigative nature, the first thing you realize [00:02:00] very, very quickly is that that opaqueness is also protecting people who are doing harm to kids in the system. [00:02:08] And, and unlike, you know, if you’re covering adult prison or something, that’s still can be hard or people or adults in the criminal justice system, it could still be difficult, but like there’s a lot, there are a lot more inroads. There are a lot more windows to peer through to kind of understand, you know, what’s going on here. [00:02:23] What might be patterns of harm here and with the juvenile justice system, it’s just so difficult. And so I, I work with some programmers and I, I work with some qualitative data people and, and our work is, is sort of. Part of our work is sort of, um, focused on creating tools for seeing into the system that can be used, um, more broadly than just in one county [00:02:45] Brett: If you want a, if you want a more in-depth look at what Jeff does. Uh, he was on one of the last episodes of systematic before. Possibly permanent [00:03:00] hiatus, maybe. I don’t know. But, uh, back in June of 2021, he was on episode 2 60, 1 of systematic. And we talked about, uh, his investigative research and his 20 years of journalism and definitely worth checking out. [00:03:16] Jeff: and Brett Brett, does that work with me now a little bit, which is really amazing. [00:03:20] Brett: I help with automation, which is, you know, my way, it’s my way. Like we’ve often talked about Ella and I talk about how, uh, when, when push comes

Transcript Overtired 273 [00:00:00] Brett: So welcome to over tired. We are, um, recording in the wake of a minor tragedy. Uh, last Sunday we sat down for two and a half hours. [00:00:17] We got, we got like an hour into it and we’re like, oh hell, let’s just keep going. Let’s record two episodes at once. And we finished after two and a half hours and I went and got a snack and I came back and I started the editing process. And I did a thing where I moved the files out of the audio hijack folders. [00:00:37] And safely had them in my edit folder. And then in audio hijack, I clicked a button to delete sessions and instead of moving the sessions to the trash, so it had like a bookmark on them. Instead of moving the session, you said the trash, it just vaporize them. And two and a half hours of audio disappeared. [00:00:57] And I was the only person who had all the tracks and [00:01:00] we lost it and we took a week to recover and we’re back today and we’re going to record another marathon session that will be published in two episodes. And we have a special guest for both of them. So without further ado, I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here with Christina Warren and our special guests. [00:01:19] Jeff Severns Gunzel, how’s it going? You guys. [00:01:22] Jeff: Good. [00:01:24] Christina: Pretty good. Pretty good. Uh, I mean, you know, honestly, I, I was promised a week off, uh, because we, we did so much work, so I’m a little, I’m [00:01:34] Brett: Uh, no, I get, it was devastating. Like I couldn’t, I couldn’t even, I couldn’t even talk. I was so no, it was horrible. Plus I had been manic. I was like on two hours of sleep, it was awful. [00:01:46] Christina: I [00:01:46] was going to say that was, that was a problem. Like, like, um, you had been so tired and so you were, you know, you did a great job, but like I could tell you’re just like trying to keep it together. [00:01:55] Brett: I fell asleep. Like there was a point where I [00:01:58] Jeff: you did fall [00:01:58] Brett: at about two hours and [00:02:00] 15 minutes. [00:02:01] Christina: They were like, We were like red and [00:02:03] he was like, oh yeah, hi. Yeah. But no, but, but, you know, so I felt terrible. [00:02:08] Cause I was like, oh man, like this was like rough for you. And then for, I mean, we’ve all been there. Those things have happened, but it is good. Another good reminder of just like how, how much we hate computers, honestly. Like, [00:02:23] Jeff: you know? [00:02:24] Brett: Well, [00:02:25] Jeff: And also like, [00:02:26] Brett: love, hate. [00:02:27] Jeff: the thing, the thing I felt bad about is it Brett, when you kind of gave me a sense of how hard you were taking it. [00:02:33] I was like, man, that conversation was great for my mental health. So I’m just glad it happened. [00:02:40] Brett: Yeah, we’re basically a therapy session. We’re a free, a free therapy session. I guess we get paid. You didn’t get paid. [00:02:49] Jeff: That’s all right. I [00:02:50] Brett: Actually. None of us got paid for that. [00:02:51] Jeff: I was going to say none of it last week. [00:02:56] Mental Health Corner the First [00:02:56] Brett: So w w the mental health corner last week, I will, [00:03:00] I will recap because I’m still in k

So good. How are you? [00:00:13] 20220129 1127 Guest: I’m I’m pretty good. So It feels like it’s been forever since we talked, [00:00:17] 20220129 1127 Brett: has been, it’s been a couple of weeks. We, uh, we had been recording on Saturday before the Friday we published and then we had a week off, but then we had a shitty week where we fell behind. Now we’re already recording Saturday the day after we were supposed to publish. So it’s been, it’s been a while. [00:00:37] Yeah. [00:00:38] 20220129 1127 Guest: Yeah. [00:00:39] No, this is what happens like we were doing so well. We were like ahead of the game and, and [00:00:45] 20220129 1127 Brett: had like days to edit. [00:00:47] 20220129 1127 Guest: Yeah. [00:00:47] I know in the. had like a thing last week and I didn’t really have a thing. I just, I was, so I was so tired. Like I genuinely was over tired. I was like tired of the point that I could not record. [00:00:59] I [00:01:00] was like, I cannot do [00:01:00] 20220129 1127 Brett: Yeah. I picked up on that from your text messages. You’re very drowsy text messages. [00:01:06] 20220129 1127 Guest: Like, when you can tell that when someone is tired in text, [00:01:09] 20220129 1127 Brett: Yeah. Yeah. And then we, we rescheduled for mid week and then I got sick, like too sick to sit at a desk. I didn’t actually take a sick day from work. I was able to from a supine position, uh, attend all of my meetings. And the weird thing about work right now is I, I can’t remember the last time we talked, but they, they switched my manager. [00:01:36] I know we talked about that. They’ve assigned me to a bunch of projects that are basically. Not happening. Like there, there they are in, in corporate parlance blocked. And so while everyone assumes that I’m busy with like three projects at once, none of them are moving [00:02:00] and I’m doing my best to pick up like odd jobs from like, Hey, do you need help with this? [00:02:06] I have some in again in corporate parlance, I have some cycles available. Um, I guess [00:02:13] 20220129 1127 Guest: Oh my [00:02:14] 20220129 1127 Brett: that’s like tech world corporate parlance, [00:02:17] 20220129 1127 Guest: Yeah. Wow. Yep. [00:02:19] 20220129 1127 Brett: yeah, so I’ll be honest. Despite two sick days, this last week was just fucking easy and I should, I honestly, there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s not like I’m being lazy. [00:02:32] If, if, if my boss hears this, um, I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. [00:02:38] 20220129 1127 Guest: You are, you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to do. And it’s like, you’re trying, like, it’s, it’s not your fault that your stuff is blocked. [00:02:46] 20220129 1127 Brett: is a hundred percent not my fault. [00:02:47] 20220129 1127 Guest: So, I mean, Like you have two options, you can continue to work on the blocked stuff that is blocked. And at a certain point [00:02:55] 20220129 1127 Brett: there’s nothing I can do. [00:02:56] 20220129 1127 Guest: do. [00:02:56] Right. [00:02:56] I was going to say like, at a certain point, you’re done like at a [00:03:00] certain point, like if there are blockers, like you can’t go any further. So if you’re not getting instruction to do more than that, and you are actively, which you are like reaching out and trying to get more things done, like, Yeah. I [00:03:13] 20220129 1127 Brett: I’m being a good employee. [00:03:14] 20220129 1127 Guest: you are like, it is not your fault that. [00:03:17] It is bureaucratic as hell. [00:03:19] 20220129 1127 Brett: So do you want to have a, a breadth mental health core? [00:03:22] 20220129 1127 Guest: I do. Let’s have breast mental health corner. Terpstra happy. 20, 22 Brett [00:00:12] Brett: Hey, happy, happy new year. How are you doing? [00:00:15] Christina: new year. I’m not bad. My bad. I’m a little tired. Um, I like, I slept a lot yesterday and then today, which is Sunday as we’re recording this, like, I’ve got like, maybe like a 45 minute nap because we were supposed to record at a certain time. And then I like took a nap then instead. But I, I, I basically didn’t go to bed at all. [00:00:35] So it’s like early afternoon. I mean, it’s like 11:00 AM here. So it was like early afternoon, basically. And, and I’ve slept like 45 minutes in the last, I don’t know, 18 hours, but I slept a ton yesterday. So my sleep schedule is swamped. Is what I’m [00:00:51] Brett: What, why are you up on. [00:00:52] Christina: I know. I don’t know. I was, I was getting pulled into reading about stupid drama on. [00:00:59] the [00:01:00] internet and, and other stuff. [00:01:02] Brett: Yeah, that’s breeding stupid drama on the internet is not usually the reason you stay up. It’s just a symptom of not sleeping. [00:01:10] Christina: No, this is very true. This is very true. And I’m not sure I think. Okay. So I’m pretty sure I had Omicron, um, uh, because of testing, uh, like it’s, it’s impossible to know, but I am better now, but I’m pretty sure I, had on the crime. And so like, I think as I was getting that out of my system, like my, my sleep schedule, just not great. [00:01:33] So. [00:01:34] Brett: I, so they talk about Alma, crown being milder, but the long COVID shit is really like I’ve gone into full lockdown. I’ve canceled my weekly visits with my parents. And, uh, like Al is masking full-time at work, even when no one’s no customers are in the yarn shop. And like, we are doing our best not to eat a mild infection. [00:01:58] Doesn’t scare us, but the long-term [00:02:00] effects are frightening. [00:02:03] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. [00:02:04] no. Um, and, and it’s impossible to know me cause long COVID we know so little about it. I think at this point, Alma Cron for a lot of us is probably kind of a foregone conclusion just because of how rapidly it’s spreading. And it does seem like if I had it, if I didn’t fact habit, I had the symptoms of a cold, um, and you know, I had like, um, my throat was sore. [00:02:25] I never had a cough. I never had a fever, my ears hurt, but it was one of those things that would have been like I would have in any other year pre pandemic would have written off as like a winter cold, you [00:02:37] Brett: Well, and bonus, the antibodies will keep you from catching Delta. [00:02:42] Christina: right, right. Which is very important. No, I was going to say, I mean, like the thing is, is that I I’ve been Vaxxed. I’ve been boosted and now I’m, I’m 99% sure that I’ve had Omicron. So I should hopefully protect it against, you know, the, the serious. [00:03:00] Um, variants at least as far as we [00:03:02] Brett: are you self-diagnosing? I thought we’ve talked about that. [00:03:06] Christina: I usually don’t self [00:03:07] Brett: I’m joking. I am well rested, but you know how, like when you sleep too much, you get super tired. [00:00:15] Christina: Yes, [00:00:16] Brett: Like I could go back to sleep, like right now I could fall asleep. [00:00:20] Christina: that’s funny. Yeah, I’ve had, okay, so I’m in Atlanta as we record this. So if I sound weird, this is why. And also if you, your intermittent dog barking in the background, I apologize. There is nothing I can do about the dogs. Um, same with, if you hear a baby, an errant baby cry, although hopefully that won’t be caught on audio anyway. [00:00:40] Um, yeah, I’m in Atlanta and I have had some good sleep, some not great sleep, but, uh, I do know what you’re talking about in terms of like, when you are sleeping for so long and then you’re like, Yeah. I just want to continue to sleep. [00:00:55] Brett: Yeah. Yeah. For like the last two nights I’ve slept like I think nine and a half hours. [00:01:00] [00:01:00] Christina: Wow. That’s good stuff. [00:01:01] Brett: Like my, like that, like last time we recorded, I’d been up for like two or three days and I was in rough shape and I don’t even, I don’t even know how that episode went. I was scared to listen to it. I did like rough edits and just published it because good Lord. [00:01:18] W w what do I say when I’m that tired? I don’t [00:01:20] Christina: Well, we had Brian on, well, we talked about anal sex is what happened. [00:01:24] Brett: I remembered that because I took a note that the title of the episode would be a real genius guide to anal sex, a literal genius. Got, but I don’t remember why it’s okay [00:01:37] Christina: the one who brought it up [00:01:38] Brett: Yeah, that adds up that that totally tracks. [00:01:42] Christina: really tracks. [00:01:42] Brett: Yeah. But anyway, um, the, uh, like shortly after that, I kinda like the mania broke and I just, I became stable, but I just wanted to sleep a lot, which is I’m cool. [00:01:58] I like sleeping it’s work. That’s where I’m [00:02:00] a pirate. Sorry, Ralph wigwam quote, I it’s people just, it, there was a [00:02:06] Christina: That’s where I’m a Viking. [00:02:07] Brett: there’s there’s like a, there’s like a, an era in time where it was okay to have a sentence quote for everything. And just like, just be able to like whip out the Simpsons quotes. And then it got to be like, oh, you’re, you’re stale. [00:02:21] If you do that. And then we hit now where it’s been long enough that [00:02:26] Christina: I feel like it’s coming back. [00:02:27] Brett: while young people have no idea, I don’t think [00:02:31] Christina: No, I don’t think they [00:02:31] Brett: no young people are going back and watching reruns of the Simpsons. They had their day. [00:02:37] Christina: Yeah, [00:02:38] I; mean, I don’t know. They might, they might not. it it’s, it’s interesting to me, I would be curious to talk to people about that. I feel like, I feel like this is one of the disadvantages of us being kind of like this peak TV period where there’s so much television, is that there is better television, in my opinion, that is that I would, I would, in some ways, love to have like young people [00:03:00] discover, like I would love, it’s not on streaming? [00:03:02] so that’s a whole other thing, but like news radio, which I contend is, is the greatest, you know, like workplace at com other than Mary Tyler Moore, and maybe Larry Sanders, depending on how you ranked that. [00:03:13] Um, I feel like young peopl

Transcript Overtired 268 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey listeners. It’s Brett here. I haven’t slept since the last time we recorded, which was a couple of days ago. I am, I am in shit shape, but fortunately I have help. I’m here with Christina Warren, you know, my long-time co-host and returning guest, Bryan Guffey. How are you guys? [00:00:24] Christina: Good, good. I’m I’m pretty good. I have slept. Um, I’m on, I’m on vacation mode. I am flying out. Um, to Atlanta early tomorrow morning, so I’ve got to do laundry and stuff. And, um, uh, but yeah, I just ordered my dad’s Christmas gift, um, which I realized was very last minute, but I thought that I’d done it earlier and I didn’t, but they did have a Sonos from, um, at a local best buy in Atlanta. [00:00:52] Well, it’ll be available for pickup on the 23rd, but I wasn’t able to get, I had to wait for father’s day, like months for his, [00:01:00] for his Sonos. Like I had to order it in may to get it like sometime at the end of June. So I was happy that this time I didn’t have to wait as long for another [00:01:10] Bryan: Sonos. [00:01:11] Brett: You spent a lot of time on a consumerism. This isn’t an insult. That sounds mean, but like, So many topics, our Christina’s like waiting to get a brand new laptop or Christina’s like hunting down a PS4. Like you spend a lot of time on like, not just shopping, but like difficult shopping. [00:01:33] Christina: No, you’re not wrong. And, and, and, and it’s, it’s a fair criticism. I think about that a lot, [00:01:37] actually. I’m Like yeah, I know. I know. But no, I mean, it’s, it’s, uh, it’s sort of this, well, we’ll talk about our mental health, but it’s sort of how I deal with things to be completely honest. And it’s not the most healthy way, but it is what it is. [00:01:49] in this case, I just literally finished doing that, before we started the pot. [00:01:53] Brett: I just like, I don’t have the energy for that kind of stuff. If it takes, it takes too long or [00:02:00] it’s too hard to track down. I just, I, I, I don’t, that’s why I don’t have that much stuff. [00:02:06] Christina: Well, in this case, I didn’t have to track it down in that difficult late, [00:02:10] like for, for this particular thing. [00:02:11] Brett: you had to, you had to put an order in and wait for it and. [00:02:15] Christina: Oh, I mean that, I mean in months to go, yeah, for, for this particular one, though, It actually works out because I will be getting into Atlanta and then we will pick it up on the 23rd. So it’s actually easier, but [00:02:26] Bryan: sure. [00:02:26] Brett: Fair enough, Brian, how are you? [00:02:30] Bryan: Um, you know, it’s, it’s Saturday and I have three days left to work for the rest of the year. So that’s like, yeah. And then though, and we’ll get into the thumb, but I am looking forward to not working so that I can work. If you all know what [00:02:46] Christina: that’s like. [00:02:46] Brett: Totally. My vacation started today. I’ve been working all day. [00:02:52] Bryan: Yeah. I was going to [00:02:52] Christina: say, I was like, my vacation technically started, um, Wednesday, although I was, uh, doing, um, [00:

[00:00:11] Brett: I it’s a, it’s a repeat guest. I liked him so much. The first time around. I thought I’d bring him back. We have, uh, Victor grunted Jr. With us today. Hi [00:00:20] Christina: Ooh. [00:00:22] Victor: Good to hear. Y’all. [00:00:23] Brett: Yeah. Um, so I had Victor and Aaron on, uh, what was it? Two weeks ago? A couple of weeks ago. Yeah. So since then I pulled my, my whole leg job title shenanigans. And, uh, I don’t know if Victor listened to the last episode yet or [00:00:41] Victor: I [00:00:41] Brett: not, but I, uh, I had a good conversation with Aaron about, uh, my, how guilty I feel and how I don’t want to screw anyone over a good conversation there. [00:00:53] Uh, I’ll tell you a little bit about it after we go to like mental health corner and whatnot, but how are you Christina?[00:01:00] [00:01:00] Christina: I’m pretty good. I’m pretty good. I’m officially in vacation mode, which is nice. Although, ironically, I’m recording this from my office at Microsoft, because I had to come in today to record a video like my last year, but it was like a completely half-assed video. I mean, it was good, but like I was writing the script, like in the Uber on the way to the office, like it was one of those sorts of things because I’m off, like I’m not getting paid for today. [00:01:23] Well, I mean, I guess I am technically, but [00:01:25] Brett: Your [00:01:25] Christina: you know, well, well, no, but you know what I mean? It’s a vacation day, so it is different. Um, like you, you guys have the unlimited vacation scam. Okay. So, yeah, so I don’t have the unlimited vacation scam. I have like the actual you get paid for certain days, and then they, you know, like will catalog other days is vacation. [00:01:44] Then you get paid for those, um, sort of thing, uh, which is not a scam. Uh, and especially if you live in the state of California, uh, which I do not, but, um, anyway, I’m technically not working today, but I am working today. So I’m, I’m like, but I’m off for the rest of the year. So I’m just like [00:02:00] very excited. [00:02:01] Brett: They, uh, they told us at Oracle that, uh, nobody should work between Christmas and new years, uh, that the offices were closed and no one was going to be here. So it was like mandatory vacation, but then there were like, um, Hey, so if you want to take off, you know, a week before or after you just put it on the calendar and kind of like gently nudged us to take some time off. [00:02:25] Cause we’d met, we’d met our stretch goals for the year were we’re six months into the fiscal year and our team. I already met our stretch goals for content. So they’re basically telling us to just chill out for a little bit. So I took next, I took next week off and the week off between Christmas and new year’s. [00:02:46] So [00:02:47] Christina: Hell. Yeah. That’s, that’s very, very good. I like that. They did that. I liked that they’re forcing you to do that. Um, I do not get forced to do that because, uh, instead of what happens in, and I guess it’s, they’re forcing back. I mean, we’re encouraged [00:03:00] make no mistake like we’re an

I’m here as always with Christina Warren, Christina. [00:00:17] Christina: I’m doing okay. I’m doing okay. How are you doing bread? [00:00:19] Brett: We got our first real snow we had, we got a respectable six inches of snow hit. I don’t know if I like it once. Like, there’s that first in November I get like, super, like, I’m not ready for snow. I can’t handle it yet. Don’t let it happen. But then by December, I’m just like, yeah, bring it on. [00:00:40] Christina: Yeah, by December, you’re like do it. So that’s, that’s nice. So, um, So. [00:00:44] it’s like six inches. Yeah. [00:00:45] Brett: Yeah. And, and I had a choice this year. Like I can afford to buy a real snowblower now, like I’ve been using this shitty electric one for a couple of years. Um, and I can afford a good one, but we had the choice between buying a, you know, $500 [00:01:00] snowblower, or just setting up a snow removal service and not having to pay maintenance fees and not having to pay gas. [00:01:09] You know, just not having to worry about it. So, you know, me, I opted for the ladder and we got our driveway cleared for us this morning while we sat and sip coffee. And it was luxurious. [00:01:22] Christina: I mean, I personally feel like you did the right thing. Um, I’m always in [00:01:27] Brett: much the same in that way. [00:01:28] Christina: We are like, like I’m, I’m, I’m, I’m completely in favor of this. N, uh, pain, someone else to do it, plus not having to, I mean, you have a house, so like you could store the snowblower, but like, it’s not going to be there, like being unused. [00:01:42] And like you said, not having to do the maintenance and the other stuff and Yeah. I’m a big fan of that. [00:01:47] Brett: Yeah. Yeah. So, so it’s been a good morning. And so just full transparency. We’re recording on Saturday because I think, I think you agree with me that it’s just better to [00:02:00] record Saturday mornings. [00:02:01] Christina: It is. [00:02:02] Brett: It’s so much more relaxed and. Uh, so we’re going to record a couple of times this week and get ourselves ahead so we can still publish on Fridays, but enjoy recording on Saturdays. [00:02:13] I think I realize what the difference is for me on weekdays. I, I get up and I do my own coding before work starts, and I get into like, whatever project I’m working on and to get into that head space and then work starts, and I have to make that shift. And then to ask myself to make another transition, two hours later to record a weekday spot or like a weekday over tired. [00:02:40] My brain just doesn’t handle transitions well enough. Whereas like on a Saturday, I, I don’t get into coding projects in the morning. I have a nice relaxed morning. Watch some YouTube, drink some coffee, and I’m like, uh, there’s no major transition. I’m just ready to record. [00:02:57] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. And, um, and I [00:03:00] like it too, because when we were, and I was fine doing it, but like, we would need to record it like 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM my time, which is, you know, [00:03:11] Brett: It’s way or w [00:03:12] Christina: way earlier. [00:03:13] Brett: I’m awake. I’m always awake at that time. Like in my, like in 6:00 AM central time, I’m always up, but I’m not conversational. [00:03:23] Christina: Yeah, that’s the thing. I’m usually a, I’m usually not up, and B if I am, which I should be, bec

[00:00:11] Brett: I am swell. When you did the countdown, before we started recording, [00:00:15] there was this long pause between two and one. Was that [00:00:20] Christina: I, that was just my, I have no idea. [00:00:23] Brett: It really threw me off. Like I had like the beat going 3, 2, 1. [00:00:31] Christina: it [00:00:31] Brett: how countdowns work. [00:00:32] Christina: that isn’t how countdowns work. [00:00:34] but it wasn’t that long of a pause. It was probably longer than it should’ve been, but it wasn’t that long of a pot. Come on. [00:00:39] Brett: Oh, so yeah, like you, you told me last week you needed, you needed you hadn’t stuff to do. And so I thought, [00:00:47] Christina: I had emotional trauma. So, sorry, go on. [00:00:50] Brett: we can, let’s talk about that in a second. [00:00:52] Christina: yeah, we will talk about that in a second, but yes, please, please tell me about, uh, [00:00:55] Brett: I thought, I thought we have three sponsors. We gotta, we gotta have a show. So I [00:01:00] brought in, I brought in Victor and Aaron, and then as we’re getting ready to record and I’m throwing the notes together, I realized that I had read the calendar wrong and they didn’t sell any sponsors on Thanksgiving. [00:01:13] So we did a show. We just made up our own sponsors. Uh, we did the show anyway, like troopers and, uh, and, and threw in some, some fake sponsors for good measure. I feel like, I feel like we did justice. I think we kept the show going in your house. [00:01:31] Christina: Well, I appreciate that very much. And thank, uh, both of both Aaron and Victor for, for, um, going in for me, especially when it turned out, I could have just had the week off, [00:01:40] Brett: All right. [00:01:41] Christina: um, which that’s depressing. Um, but that’s awesome. And that’s cool that like, you know, since we all work together, um, is Aaron back from leave yet? [00:01:49] Or is she still on leave? Okay, great. [00:01:51] Brett: whole team’s back together again. [00:01:54] Christina: Uh, well, in my defense, yeah, I had, I said, I think you’d have families for whatever. No, I had like emotional trauma [00:02:00] last week. I’m not even going to get a lie. We should just get straight into Brett’s mental health corner. Cause I wanna know how you’re doing. [00:02:05] Brett: It sounds like it could be just mental health corner this week. [00:02:09] Christina: It definitely is. It’s just, you know, the title of the segment is breast mental health border. And that doesn’t change even though it’s above what the bus. Um, okay. So last week was the first time now almost two weeks ago. Um, cause I, I like left on a Monday. I came back on a Sunday, so I was there for a long time. [00:02:28] I was in Atlanta for Thanksgiving and almost people are like, okay, well most people go home for Thanksgiving. Well, I haven’t gone home for Thanksgiving. And since 2011 and my, my mom hasn’t hosted Thanksgiving since 2011. And she used to always historically be the person who always host it. Um, but in 2011, um, on, uh, three days after Thanksgiving, uh, my aunt and uncle who were not with us that year, they were with, um, uh, my, my uncles. [00:02:57] Um, in Florida, they [00:03:00] were, um, in a car accident and, um, and died, um, three days after Thanksgiving, 2011. And, um, his sister and nephew were in the back seat. They fortunately survived. Although his sister had, Um, [00:03:14] some significant

So Christina did take a week off. I decided to pull together a Motley crew of tech writers from Oracle and do a special Thanksgiving episode with no real sponsors. But yeah. [00:00:28] Um, anyway, I’m Brett TURPs DRO. I’m here with Aaron Dawson and Victor, uh, Gretta junior. I don’t, I never remember if I sent, if I’m saying a Gretta, right? [00:00:40] Victor: You got it perfectly. right? [00:00:41] Brett: God damn. I’m good. How are you guys doing? [00:00:45] Erin: Doing so good, Brett, how are you, how are you doing? [00:00:49] Brett: Aye. Aye. Aye. [00:00:50] Victor: that? Was that. [00:00:51] Brett: I have a couple, we have like unlimited vacation time, so they don’t technically give us holidays at all. Um, it’s just days that everyone agrees. They’re [00:01:00] not coming to work. And I think we all agreed. We get Friday off. So I’m on day two of a four day weekend. I’m good. [00:01:09] Erin: Oh, absolutely. Victor, how are you [00:01:11] Victor: doing? Yeah, well, same. I mean, I’m, I’m taking this time to, uh, to have a good sit. [00:01:19] Brett: Okay. And set. Does that mean watching TV? [00:01:22] Victor: It means partly staring out the window, honestly, which is just as good as TV? [00:01:26] these days. [00:01:27] Brett: No. No, it’s not. [00:01:28] Victor: Oh, [00:01:29] Erin: hold up. I want to get back to the PTO thing a few episodes ago as a loyal listener. I, I do remember Christina saying, you know, unlimited PTO is a scam. I want to interrogate that for a second. I like, I like the spirit of that, but I, [00:01:45] Victor: I have some thoughts. [00:01:46] Brett: the only real reason that anyone has ever given me by way of explanation, uh, is that. Uh, when you have like specific amount of vacation time, like you get two weeks, your first [00:02:00] year of employment, uh, you get paid. If you don’t use them, uh, you get paid after you leave the company for unused vacation. With PTO, you don’t accrue any like money there. [00:02:18] It doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. And the fact is Oracle is super good about letting you use unlimited vacation. Like I’ve taken a couple of weeks off already and like people cover for you and it’s just accepted. And I don’t think it’s a scam. I think it’s actually a really good, a really cool thing. [00:02:40] Erin: Agree agree. Although I’ll take it in another direction though, I think. Okay. So, so I was. About a month for a pretty big surgery and U2 or such good sports about picking up my, my slack really. Um, and the reason I could do that is because of unlimited PTO. I probably [00:03:00] could’ve gone through medical leave or some formal measure, but I didn’t have to what this does though, is that it. [00:03:07] Just because you take PTO doesn’t mean that you’re the work that you’re responsible for. It takes PTO as well. So that can get kind of complicated politically. Right? So this week we had three working days, really. Um, which meant that for me, this is true for me. Probably true for both of you as well. I had to squeeze in five days of work into this. [00:03:31] Kind of right. And so it, I could see that being spun as a scam in, in a sense, [00:03:38] Brett: feel like that’s true of any job where you have a three day week. [00:03:42] Victor: right. [00:03:43] Brett: Um, there was a week when you were gone that I took off too, and we left Victor alone to do both of our [00:03:50] Victor: As a new [00:03:51] Brett: in his first month of employment. [00:03:53] Victor: Well, the good news is. Nothing ever bad happens to my [00:04:00] workflow or tech stack. So you knew that like, everything was going to go swimmingly and according to, [00:04:06] Brett: flawless. [00:04:07] Victor: uh, apologies to those of you, who̵

Transcript Overtired 263 [00:00:00] Christina: [00:00:04] You’re listening to overtired. I’m Christina Warren. I am joined by my cohost as always Mr. Brett Turkstra and a very, very, very special guest. Our friend breaths, uh, colleague, um, both of our former colleagues in another life. Uh, the guy who frankly is responsible for Brett and I like knowing each other to begin with all around great guy, um, uh, comedian, um, magician. [00:00:29] We’re gonna talk about that. A bunch of other things, Mr. Victor agreed at junior Victor, Brett, how are you? [00:00:36] Brett: I think we’re good. [00:00:38] Victor: Yeah, [00:00:39] Christina: sorry. That was like way more excited than I probably should have been considering. We’re recording this in the morning when I’m tired, but I am very happy, uh, that, that Victor is joining us. [00:00:50] Brett: We’re on the cost. We’re recording on Saturday, which I actually really liked cause it’s super low stress and I don’t feel like I’m like cheating on work, but we’re at that point where, [00:01:00] for me it’s noon for Victor it’s one. And for you it’s 10:00 AM. And on a Saturday, like we usually do the show at six in the morning. [00:01:07] So like saying 10:00 AM is too early is weird, but [00:01:10] Christina: It’s not that it’s too early. It’s just, I, okay. I went to bed at like, I don’t know, like four [00:01:15] so, [00:01:16] Brett: shit, that’s your problem right there. [00:01:18] Mental Health Corner [00:01:18] Christina: well, that is my problem right there, but it no lots of problems, but, um, anyway, I’m super excited. Victor’s here. Um, how’s everybody’s mental health doing? [00:01:27] Brett: I gotta, I gotta tell ya. I gotta tell ya. Um, I’m curious about Victor’s mental health, but I feel like I need to explain the stupidest manic episode ever. [00:01:38] Christina: Yeah. [00:01:39] Brett: So like I had a couple of weeks of. I thought I was stable, but I began to realize about a week ago that I was actually like low grade depressed. And that’s why, like, I felt like demoralized every day at work, it felt like everything was going wrong and everyone hated me and they didn’t Dawn [00:02:00] on me. [00:02:00] Cause depression is sneaky. It didn’t Dawn on me that I actually had like, like a, um, a mental health issue, not a horrible job. Um, and then all of the sudden it happened the day after I got vaccinated, I got my flu and booster shot. And the next day I was, I woke up and I was productive and I was like super good at communicating with people. [00:02:25] And I thought, oh shit, I might be going manic. But I was like, calm. I was just, I was, I felt productive and normal. And then that night I fell asleep. But I woke up early enough that I knew I had to be slightly manic, but it was, I normally, when I’m manic, like it’s no problem to focus on things. It’s no problem to stay awake and uh, just get shit done. [00:02:55] And I do a lot of stuff. And this one I’m just [00:03:00] super tired. I’m calm, I’m slow, but I’m not sleeping. And so I’m just like going, I have this wall I’m pushing through right now. So I’m really tired. And if I’m an asshole to anybody, I apologize. I have like no filter and very little impulse co

Transcript Overtired 262 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, people you’re listening to over tired. I am Brett Harpster. I’m here with birthday girl, Christina Warren, Christina. Happy birthday. How are you [00:00:13] Christina: I’m good. Thank you very much for asking. I’m excellent. Um, yes, it is true. I have turned 29 [00:00:21] Brett: again? [00:00:22] Christina: again, I know it’s amazing how this keeps happening and uh, like I it’s, it’s truly shocking that, that it just seems to happen over and over again? [00:00:31] I’ve, I’ve made some sort of deal with some people and I’m just, the time is time is all relative anyway, but yes. [00:00:39] Um, my birthday was yesterday, uh, as we record this and, um, great day, I have to say in the news, like I have to say my birthday. Isn’t always great. Sometimes. Like, you know, because it’s it’s any day of the year and we live in a hellscape of a time. And so oftentimes terrible things [00:01:00] happen. Oh, your birthday. [00:01:01] And, uh, yesterday I’m sure some terrible things did happen, but mostly good things happened. So let me just like quickly go through the list and then I want to get into Brett’s mental health corner, but, um, the first and, and, and most exciting thing for me personally, and also the show was that Taylor swift, we released her, um, uh, Seminole album red in a new deluxe version with 30 tracks. [00:01:28] So it’s kind of like. So much more on it than what was on the original. And it’s like, it’s like over two hours of stuff. It’s great. Including a 10 minute version of all too well, which also had a short film, which we’re going to talk about. Um, red is my favorite album. So this was great for me cause I’ve got to relive the release of this record twice. [00:01:48] Um, a lot of the bonus tracks are really good. Uh it’s it’s, it’s great. Um, also, uh, music, uh, Gracie Abrams, who I really, really enjoy. She’s kind of a, a young oven [00:02:00] crop coming artists who should have Olivia Rodrigo’s career, but doesn’t, uh, she released a new album in, uh, in other very exciting news. [00:02:08] Brittany was freed. So Brittany is now no longer under her conservatorship. So yay. Yay, Brittany. Uh, Steve Bannon was indicted, which is very exciting and a pink win, um, who somehow got lost from Antarctica and found his way to New Zealand was found and sent back home [00:02:27] Brett: Deported that’s cruel. [00:02:30] Christina: Well, I mean, he was dehydrated and he, he like, they don’t, they don’t, they don’t live outside of like, you know, he’s in like this, like not, not freezing area. [00:02:38] So it was very like worrisome, cause It’s like, you know, pingo was lost and pingo was found and how he’s been reunited with his family. So, uh, Disney also announced some stuff don’t even really care so much about that pingo is more exciting to me, but like just a good day, [00:02:53] Brett: a shit storm of happy birthday. [00:02:56] Christina: honestly. Like I, I felt like some like, like [00:03:00] red, I know why that happened is because a Dell was going to release her long-awaited album on, um, November 19th, which was when Taylor swift had originally planned on rereleasing red and, um, Taylor swift and her record label rightly looked at that situation and went, oh

[00:00:13] Christina: It is Saturday. Yeah. we are recording late. Thank you very much for letting us record late. I was, shall we say more than Overtired yesterday? [00:00:22] Brett: Yeah. You, you, you said you had like 90 minutes of sleep. What happened? [00:00:26] Christina: I do. I don’t know. I don’t know. I get these insomnia burse and, um, this was one of those situations where, and we were recording late. We’re recording at 8:00 AM, which for us is like a late thing. And I genuinely had had like 90 minutes of sleep and I was like, I can’t do this. And I had a meeting at 10 and I was like, I just need to sleep until 10:00 AM. [00:00:47] So, because it’s easier to go into a meeting with like three and a half hours sleep versus 90 minutes. So. [00:00:55] Brett: Well, if we didn’t, if we didn’t ha oh, our sponsors a show this [00:01:00] week, I would have just given you the week. [00:01:02] Christina: Yeah. exactly. But we love our sponsors that much. And we love getting paid that much. That a here we are. [00:01:10] Does anyone still have ringtones? [00:01:10] Brett: Yeah. So, uh, so, uh, uh, w w you know what, I, I really liked the ring tone that, you know, the music that Skype plays when you’re like waiting for someone to pick up. [00:01:22] Christina: do, do do. [00:01:24] Brett: Yeah. Yeah. Aye. Has it always been like that? Or is that like something new? [00:01:29] Christina: I think it’s been that way for a number of years. I don’t know how long, but I’m with you. I like it. Uh, the funny thing is at least because audio is such a shit show everywhere. I don’t always like hear it. So sometimes you don’t have my things set up and I like won’t hear it. But when I do, I’m always like very excited because a, like, I know my audio is working and be it’s Jonty. [00:01:51] It’s a nice little Shante doo doo doo doo doo doo. [00:01:55] Brett: Yeah, it’s completely inoffensive. [00:01:58] Christina: It is completely [00:01:59] Brett: I can’t [00:02:00] imagine anyone being upset by this Skype ring. Ring tone sound. [00:02:04] Christina: No, and it’s not like, like, like the, like the T-Mobile duh, duh, duh, duh. You know that one. Drives me. It drives me fucking crazy. And there’s also one, like one of the default iPhone ones is just like offensive. And I think it’s because at this point I relate it to like, okay, so you and I, we were joking before we started recording. [00:02:30] Like, we both just have our phones on silent, so we don’t even use ringtones anymore. My mom is not one of those people. And so she’s had the same kind of ringtone, like since she’s had like her Motorola razor or whatever, and she always keeps her phone on and for whatever, like my mom, I love my mom so much, but like my mom, you know, she’s your mom, like, you get annoyed by shit. [00:02:51] Your mom does. And like my mom, like some of her stuff, like, she’ll just like let the phone ring and we’ll be in the car. And like, she’s like trying to find it to answer. And I’m like, just pair it with [00:03:00] your Bluetooth system. And it’s a whole thing. So there’s certain ringtones that when I hear them, I just like [00:03:07] Brett: Great sound new. [00:03:08] Christina: Well, yeah, it’s like a completely Pavlovian thing, right? Like, it’s, it’s just like, you hear it in, like, instead of salivating

[00:00:28] Erin: Thank you happy to be here, [00:00:30] Brett: Is there even any bachelor news to talk about? [00:00:33] Christina: Uh, this is just this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, what do you want to talk about with bachelor? Because there is a lot of stuff. [00:00:41] Brett: let’s, let’s ease into this. I let that, I brought it up. I know, like I, I did that. That was my fault, but let’s, let’s ease into the bachelor conversation. [00:00:53] Erin: fine. [00:00:54] Brett: Fine. So what, like, what is what’s going on in the world? These.[00:01:00] [00:01:00] That’s So Meta [00:01:00] Christina: Um, well, uh, Facebook is, uh, is attempting to rebrand itself. They announced that their big, uh, Facebook connect conference that, um, the company name, um, they’re, they’re doing an umbrella company strategy kind of like, you know, alphabet. Yeah. Where, where that’s now going to be Metta. [00:01:19] Brett: nobody knows who alphabet is like I under, I know, I know, but you can’t say alphabet, [00:01:25] Christina: can’t. It doesn’t. [00:01:26] Brett: that rebranding? Like, why are we doing this? [00:01:28] Christina: This is a whole argument. I’m in getting into a people on Twitter because these rebranding never works. Like Altea, uh, everyone is still calls it Philip Morris, right? Like you, you never call, um, even though the, the, the sub-companies, but then alphabet it’s all Google, right? The stocks on bolt is still Google. [00:01:47] Like these things don’t work. Like when, when Netflix tried to rebrand one of their products Quickster I think it lasted like a week. Um, I was, I was, uh, talking about this on Twitter. Like the only actual [00:02:00] successful time I can ever recall was Accenture. And that was because Arthur Anderson went out of business. [00:02:06] So, um, for people who don’t know, um, Arthur Anderson used to be one of the big. Um, like accounting firms and they were probably the biggest and because of their, uh, involvement with the Enron scandal, they wound up going out of business. Um, first I think the government said they could not operate. And then once the government said that they could operate, they’re basically dead, but they took Arthur Anderson consulting, which had been a massive part of it. [00:02:31] And they renamed that Accenture and that obviously still lives on today, but that’s one of the only examples I can think of. You sometimes see the inverse where like a company that’s known for something like a research in motion was known as Blackberry. So they renamed themselves Blackberry, but like, we still call like P Diddy puffy. [00:02:50] Like, you know what I mean? And it’s been 20 years. So yeah, this, this, I think that’s their attempt to get away from the genocide, but it’s still gonna be [00:03:00] Facebook. [00:03:00] Brett: Yeah. We’re the brand names like

What’s up, what’s up everybody? [00:00:13] Brett: uh, I asked Brian how, how we should introduce them. And they said, uh, an Atlassian admin by day, a nerd, pretty much all the time, a person with a lot of ADHD and anxiety and the volunteer CEO of the queer fraternity, Delta Lambda, Phi that’s that’s uh, yeah, I feel like that probably is all we need to know about. [00:00:39] Bryan: Yeah, I mean, you’ll learn more. [00:00:41] Greek Life [00:00:41] Christina: think so. I think so. Um, so, uh, queer fraternity, um, I’m assuming this is, this is like, not like an official part of like the, is it a F is it an official Panasonic system or is it like a. Like w how, how does that work? The queer fraternity. [00:00:59] Bryan: No, [00:01:00] absolutely. It is. Um, the, it isn’t an IC fraternity, so we’re part of the north American Interfraternity council. So that’s where a lot of the big kind of fraternities are. [00:01:10] Christina: Yep. Okay. Awesome. [00:01:11] Bryan: Yeah. 18, 18 chapters across the United States and Canada. And we’ve been around since 1986. [00:01:18] Christina: That’s awesome. That’s really awesome. Yeah. And that’s right. Nick is the fraternity thing. I was thinking sorority, which is the Panasonic, um, think, cause cause there were like various Brett didn’t do Greek life. So he doesn’t know, but like there are, cause there’s like a difference, like co-ed fraternities, aren’t real fraternities. [00:01:33] Like, you know what I mean? They are, but they’re but they’re not. Yeah. So, so that’s that’s so that’s really cool. That’s awesome. So you’re the volunteer CEO. I had a sorority within my sorority, um, Epsilon Zeta. So, so we were Epsilon Zeta 80th data, which is easy home. Um, which I still think is probably the most. [00:01:55] Well, one of the most clever, like things I’ve ever come up with, especially since I’m, I’m fairly certain, I [00:02:00] was pretty drunk when I came up with that, but we were basically, I was alpha Delta, but we, um, had our sorority within our sorority, which was basically the girls who would like get drunk in the car, like during like meetings and like planning, like, like, you know, offsite, retreat things, you know, getting ready for, for, um, you know, Russians and stuff. [00:02:21] Like we were like, we cannot handle these bitches sober. So we would like go to the car to like, get drunk. So that’s that was, [00:02:28] Bryan: I was definitely the other side of like, I was president for two and a half years of my tap there [00:02:34] Christina: Oh yeah, no, I was, I mean, I, I was financial vice-president. Um, so that was so that honestly, well, look, I was good with the numbers [00:02:43] Brett: of course you were. [00:02:44] Christina: even, I didn’t even want to join a sorority. They were just really nice to me. And they kept taking me clubbing and I was like, damn it. And then my mom got so excited. [00:02:52] Bryan: Most people who join Greek life had no, uh, illusions of joining it in the first place. They get sur

I’m good. I’m I’m uh, I didn’t get a ton of sleep, but that’s okay. Um, but I’m, I’m not Overtired, we’re recording this at like an actual normal time for me versus the super early time that we’ve been doing it, which I appreciate, I won’t be able to talk about why that is. Um, uh soon-ish but, um, yeah, I’m, I’m, uh, I’m, I’m doing pretty well. [00:00:34] How are you doing. [00:00:35] A brief descent into the Mental Health Corner [00:00:35] Brett: So I, I was super stable for almost two weeks. Like just feeling great, like super normal. And it’s those times when you’re like, oh, this is what everyone feels like all the time. Uh, my relationship was like outstanding, super in love. Just able to like be present. And then what is it? It’s [00:01:00] Friday. It’s Wednesday night. [00:01:03] Uh, I got a little manic, not super manic, but mannequin enough to not sleep. And, uh, then Thursday I felt calm, but you know, I hadn’t slept for 24 hours. So I was super tired last night. I slept great. Like it seems to have passed, but now I’m in that place where you stay up for a whole night, you pull it all nighter and then you sleep the next night. [00:01:30] And then that day, that is the definition of Overtired. That feeling when you can barely barely function. [00:01:40] Christina: Yep. You are correct. So, okay. Um, so, so you’re definitely kind of Overtired now, so I guess, um, and that’s kind of a good update of like, um, uh, Brett’s mental health corner, but you’ve also, you’ve had the week off [00:01:53] Brett: Yeah. Yeah. [00:01:55] Christina: talk about. [00:01:56] Brett: Well first, that means that [00:02:00] a brief manic episode, I get to spend pouring time into my crazy projects instead of working all night on work stuff. So that’s cool. It was nice to have a week off. It’s it’s weird. I kept checking in all week, um, to kind of cause like Aaron, my coworker is out for the month and Victor just started. [00:02:25] So me taking a week off meant I left Victor with two weeks of experience to fend. He’s the only person left on the team. It’s a team of three and two of us are gone. So I, I minimally, but I checked in to try to make sure things were okay. Um, it was still relaxing though. Oh, before we go too far, let me [00:02:51] Christina: I was going to say, I was going to say, I hear dog. [00:02:53] Brett: So we have house cleaners. Uh, we managed to get the house clean enough for my [00:03:00] girlfriend to feel comfortable bringing in house cleaners. Uh, so we have, uh, a couple upstairs using a bunch of natural cleaning products to do a deep clean on our house for two hours, which is excessive in my opinion. But I also don’t care about how clean the house is. [00:03:19] So. As a result of that though, I have to have our small little cattle dog rat terrier mix in my office. So she’s not up there bothering the house cleaners and she is not loving it. So you will hear some huffing, roofing and occasional barks. I have my cough button handy. I’ll try to have, I’ve tried to avoid having to do major edits

Transcript Overtired 257 [00:00:00] Christina: You’re listening to Overtired. I’m Christina Warren. I’m here with Brett Terpstra, Brett, how are you? [00:00:10] Brett: Um, I’m super swell. Uh, fucking amazing. But are you feeling. [00:00:16] Christina: I am finally feeling. [00:00:17] better. Thank you. I, uh, I thank you again, Ashley Esqueda for filling in last week. We even punted like several days. And I was just so sick. Um, I did not have the Rona, but I had like one hell of a sinus infection. And I had to go through like the entire seven day course of antibiotics before I started to feel better. [00:00:37] Brett: So, so you actually were legit sick. Uh, [00:00:40] Christina: I was like legit sick. [00:00:42] Brett: I, I might need to see a doctor’s note. [00:00:46] Christina: I didn’t even tweet, like people were [00:00:48] Brett: Oh, [00:00:48] Christina: People were like reaching out to me. They were like, they were like, are you okay? I was like, no, I am saying. [00:00:54] Brett: I haven’t seen you tweet for three days. Are you okay? [00:00:57] Christina: That’s basically what it [00:00:58] Brett: go check her [00:01:00] apartment. [00:01:00] Christina: that that’s, that’s almost exactly what it was. Yeah. So, um, yeah, I was just, uh, I, I do have a doctor’s note if I needed to get you one, but, uh, I had to do the Teladoc thing. [00:01:12] Brett: Oh yeah. [00:01:12] Christina: I mean, I could, I could’ve gone to the doctor, but the Teladoc thing was easier. I was like, I have a sinus infection. [00:01:18] Like, what are your symptoms? I was like, well, this is what it is like You have these often. Yeah. This time a year, every single year, I was like, actually, if you want to look through my history this time a year, a year ago, you know, like I think it was like two days apart from like a year previously when I last had a Teladoc appointment with a sinus infection, the exact same time. [00:01:38] So. [00:01:39] Brett: You would be amazed at how well, if it were time to do a sponsoree that would lead like right into our first sponsor, but it’s not, we gotta wait till like, we’re like 10, 15 minutes in. So put a pin in that. [00:01:52] Christina: put a pin in that. And then we’ll, we’ll, we’ll, we’ll save that. [00:01:54] Mental Health Corner [00:01:54] Christina: for the, for the sponsor read, um, segue. Um, so, [00:02:00] uh, I guess, uh, I have like lots of Bret mental health corner. Catch-up how are you? [00:02:04] Brett: Oh, uh, so I had like the expected depression after my last manic episode. That only lasted, like, I think about five days and I I’ve been like great ever since totally stable, like a wonderful loving partner, uh, just able to like function in the world. It’s been splendid. [00:02:30] Christina: Yay. That’s very exciting. That makes me very happy. [00:02:34] Brett: How have you been [00:02:35] Christina: Um, I think, okay. [00:02:36] Brett: mentally? I mean, we know you weren’t great physically. [00:02:39] Christina: No, I know that’s and that’s what I mean. I mean, not like the best, but you know, getting there. Um, so we’ll, we’ll see my doctor, like, like I said before, he got me, um, the sleep medicine, but then I got sick. So I haven’t even had any chance to like, see, like, if that’s working or anything. [00:02:57] Brett: My sleep for the last couple of [00:03:00] nights has been really shitty

[00:01:05] Ashley: but see, I’d see squid game series. [00:01:07] Brett: Pretty serious. Um, yeah. So how have you been at. [00:01:12] Ashley: You know, uh, I really like coming on this show because I always like to say, I feel Overtired just all the time. So, um, this is very appropriate content for me to come and participate in. Uh, but overall good. It’s spooky season. October 1st is here, like, woo it’s October. Now. Love that big fan. [00:01:32] Brett: Every year, every year, I plan to make some crazy, like, like combine a bunch of home automation equipment and make some really cool, like automated trick or treat thing. That’ll like give the kids a thrill and I never get around to it. [00:01:48] Ashley: you have. So you’re an ideas, man, but like the execution, just not there. [00:01:51] Brett: and I have a friend who owns a toy store and is excellent at like robotics. And he does like all [00:02:00] kinds of puppetry and everything. And he could, he, he, The two of us together could make some amazing stuff and I, I never pick up the [00:02:07] Ashley: available to you, sir are infinite. This, this is I’m. I’m jealous. I got a 12 foot skeleton for Halloween. I, that was my, I have one of the home Depot, 12 foot skeletons. I was [00:02:20] Brett: what’s that a skeleton of what kind of giant leaves? A 12 foot skeleton [00:02:25] Ashley: I mean, I don’t really know, but does it matter? He’s just, he’s beautiful. [00:02:30] Brett: Are we talking about Nephilim? [00:02:31] Ashley: Yeah, sure. Why not? [00:02:33] Brett: Did you [00:02:34] Ashley: Maybe like a younger, giant, right? [00:02:36] Like a, like a, like a, like a pre pubescent, giant child [00:02:42] Brett: Did you know that biblical giants were supposedly the offspring of angels in humans. [00:02:49] Ashley: I had. I feel like I’ve read that somewhere a long time ago. [00:02:54] Brett: Also the dimensions given for Goliath and the Bible would be [00:03:00] physically incapable of supporting a structural skeleton. Just in case you wanted to get like [00:03:06] Ashley: insight [00:03:07] Brett: theological debate out of [00:03:08] this? Well, it’s like a human skeleton can only get so large before it buckles under its own [00:03:14] Ashley: It’s own weight. Right, right, right. [00:03:16] Brett: And the dimensions that gave for Goliath would not have been physicall

[00:00:14] Christina: I’m also very tired. Uh, my insomnia, um, as reared its head again. So even though we’re recording this at like 7:00 AM, I got like two hours of sleep. So [00:00:28] Brett: I like how you said insomnia with a Z. Like it was in Zambia. [00:00:33] Christina: Yeah, exactly. [00:00:34] Brett: Oh, Matt. Two hours of sleep for, is that too, like more than one night in a row or is that just one night? [00:00:41] Christina: Uh, this is like more than one night. I mean, this was only two hours of sleep, like, so I went to, I fell asleep at like 5:00 AM and, um, so, but I. I don’t know the last time that I got like, as a stained, like [00:01:00] more than maybe like four hours at a time. It’s been days. [00:01:04] Brett: yeah. That’ll wear you down. Hardcore. [00:01:07] Christina: Yeah. I’m glad it’s the weekend. [00:01:08] Brett: I, yeah, I hope you get some sleep. I’ll I’ll tell you again at the end of the show, but, [00:01:14] Christina: Yeah. [00:01:14] Brett: but yeah, like that, like I’ve had over the last couple of weeks of a few nights of bad sleep, but, uh, once I got through last, week’s kind of more intense manic episode. Uh, I got four, four nights in a row. [00:01:30] Good. Eight hours sleep. And then last couple of nights have been more like five or six hours, but not nearly as bad as two to four hours a night for multiple days. [00:01:41] Christina: Yeah. [00:01:43] Mental Health Corner [00:01:43] Brett: Yeah. So how’s your mental health? [00:01:47] Christina: Well, the tiredness, you know, although I had this whole discussion. Shrink last week about the difference between, uh, being tired, being fatigued, being, uh, there’s like a, uh, [00:02:00] another, uh, thing like exhausted. I think there was there all these different types of, of sleep things. And we were trying to figure out like, which one I have. so he wrote me a script, um, for, uh, we’re going to try some sort of sleep medication and see if that helps [00:02:17] Brett: so here’s the thing is the, I think they’re called Z class, like a Lunesta. And I can’t remember the other one. Um, like I took those for years and they do help me with sleep, but they fucked my memory. [00:02:33] Christina: Yeah. [00:02:34] Brett: I don’t have great memory as an ADHD person anyway, but this was like, I was forgetting yesterday entirely. [00:02:41] I couldn’t keep track of things. Five minutes later. Uh, it was, it was scary. Like I thought it was early onset Alzheimer’s because, uh, you can only take those first so long before they destroy your memory. So be careful. [00:02:55] Christina: Yeah. [00:02:56] I will. There’s also like, whatever, I can’t remember which one I’m going to be [00:03:00] taking. Um, I may be testing it out. It’s, it’s, there’s a new one. That’s really experimental. That is incredibly expensive, like incredibly expensive that you often have to like appeal to your insurance companies and whatnot to let you take. [00:03:15] Um, and, and it’s, uh, I mean, I can’t remember how much a month it would have cost, but it it’s something insane. So I’m not starting with that. I’m starting with one that is apparently. Apparently they’ve done stuff. They’ve done tests with it, where they take people who’ve been on it. They wake them up after a couple of hours and then put them on like a driving course test and they can still drive and it’s supp

Transcript Overtired 254 [00:00:00] Christina: You’re listening to overtired. I’m Christina Warren here as always with the wonderful Brett Terpstra Brett, how are you? [00:00:12] Brett: Hi, I’m good. I’m actually recording from the beginning this time. We’re not missing anything. [00:00:19] Christina: Okay. We’re recording from the beginning. This is good. So we are not going to miss the first 20 minutes of, of, um, uh, pop punk talk. Um, that’s important. Um, but, uh, when actually, uh, you also, you did the thing that we talk about, like, uh, where, um, you’re not saying I’m fucking awesome. Uh, when I actually asked you legit, how you, where you’re like, we need to do a Bret mental health [00:00:42] corner update. [00:00:42] Mental Health Corner [00:00:43] Christina: So, so let’s just get into that right away. [00:00:46] Brett: yeah. Yeah. So when I say I’m good, that’s usually a masking. [00:00:52] Christina: Yes. It’s just what we do. [00:00:56] Brett: Yeah. So, uh, on, I [00:01:00] think Tuesday, I very suddenly went manic, um, in the late, late afternoon, I think it started like, it was this definite switch and I didn’t sleep Tuesday night or Wednesday night at all. And by Thursday I was just a zombie, um, like, uh, Wednesday I was super productive. I did a week’s worth of work, uh, which is good because on Thursday I couldn’t work at all. [00:01:36] But so today is like, I slept last night, I got a good deep eight hours of sleep with crazy dreams. Uh, so now the, like, have you, you’ve had all nighters. [00:01:51] Christina: Uh, yes. [00:01:52] Brett: So the you’re fine up until you sleep. And then when you wake up, then it all hits you. [00:02:00] So right now I’m totally, uh, I’m dragging. It feels like I’m underwater, like fighting for consciousness. [00:02:09] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. So D um, what, what type of weird dreams did you have? Like [00:02:14] Brett: Here’s the weirdest thing is I’m fully aware that I was having weird dreams. I was aware in the dream that this was a weird dream, but I cannot remember what it was about. [00:02:25] Christina: That’s, I’ve had that happen before? Um, I, that’s always the most bizarre thing where I’m like in the dream and I’m like, this is weird and this isn’t what it typically, you know, like dream about. [00:02:40] And I know something with this is off, but then you wake up and you’re like, okay, that was weird enough that in the dream, I was conscious enough to be like, This is a bizarre dream. [00:02:50] And then I’m like, oh yeah, totally lost it. [00:02:52] Brett: Did you ever have dreams? Where in the dream you feel like this is a dream you have all the time. Like you’re going back to someplace [00:03:00] familiar and this is, this is like something you’ve known your whole life and then you wake up and it seems like, like you never had that dream before. [00:03:10] Christina: Yeah. Although my word thing, I guess I would say is I, sometimes I’ve definitely had the, maybe this is what you’re talking about. Maybe it’s slightly different, but I’ve had the thing where I’m in a dream and it’s referencing an earlier dream and it like, maybe even is an earlier dream. And like, and I’m aware of this. [00:03:26] I’m like, oh, I had this dream before. [00:03:28] Yeah. [00:03:28] And now I’m kind of, and it’s not quite a lucid dream, but it is the sort of thing where. I

Um, I, I want to, again, this is the second time in as many weeks that I’ve, uh, hit the record button and then done the countdown and then stop the recording instead of starting the recording. I’m Brett Turkstra, uh, the, the, the perpetual fuck up. I’m here with Christina Warren and our special guests. Once again, Aaron Dawson. Uh, how are you ladies doing once again? [00:00:37] Erin: I’m awesome. [00:00:39] Christina: Nice call back. Nice call back. Yeah, I’m pretty good. I’m pretty good. I’ve been up. I’ve been up for like an hour and a half, so I’m like rubbed up also. We already recorded 15 minutes of this, so I’m like warmed up and ready. [00:00:52] Brett: Yeah, It’s I find it so depressing. To like have to repeat good conversation. Like it was good. [00:01:00] We, we were doing great. And you guys were like on the ball actually recording your parts of it. I’m S I’m sorry. I apologize. I apologize to our listeners for the great conversation you had to miss. [00:01:13] Christina: I mean, look, that’s what happens. This is. This is honestly, this is why maybe what we should do at some point, Brett and Erin would be great if you wanted to join us for one of these, we should like record, but we could also do like a Twitter spaces thing, which is like, you know, a femoral. And although I think they are going to be adding a record feature and then that way, you know, you just get to hear the behind the scenes thing. [00:01:36] Brett: don’t know what that is. [00:01:39] Christina: like clubhouse, which okay. You don’t, you also don’t know about. Okay. So it’s. [00:01:44] Brett: Cause I’m old. [00:01:46] Christina: No, because you don’t care about this stuff because you’re not, um, like interminably online. Like I am, um, you like have other interests other than anyway. Um, it’s basically, you know, like the modern version of like the [00:02:00] party line where, you know, you have like a group of people who can all talk, but you can, um, at least with Twitter spaces, you can like. [00:02:06] You can do this with clubhouse too, but Twitter spaces is, um, a little bit more refined, even though they kind of copied the clubhouse product, or you could like set people who are the moderators or the speakers, um, you know, the only people who can talk and then you can have people who like, just listen in, but it’s like an ephemeral thing. [00:02:22] So like, I could just start a chat and just start talking to random people and then just like end it whenever [00:02:27] Brett: We could do. [00:02:29] Christina: it kept kinda be cool. It was like a behind the scenes thing. Like people wanted to listen to us like while we were cool. The live beds. I mean, we would still record on our own to do our podcasts, but we could be like, [00:02:39] Brett: Yeah. [00:02:40] Christina: is, this is the live thing. [00:02:41] That’d be kind of cool. [00:02:42] Erin: Sorry. I don’t, I don’t know if he said this, Christina, but is this sort of similar to Twitch where you’re, you’re looking at, you know, someone presumably using like a webcam or something and would that be weird for both of you? Because from what I understand, you, you never like [00:03:00] recorded and overtired like through video. [00:03:03] Christina: right, exactly. However, this is audio only. So, [00:03:08] Erin: man. I wanted to see that. [00:03:09] Brett: I&

I’m swell, Christina, how are you? [00:00:15] Christina: I’m fine. I’m fine. Uh, you’re swell. Is that like a sarcastic swell? Is that like a, um, a genuine swell? Is that like a [00:00:22] Brett: So, so swell. Swell means means, okay. It means like, I guess what most people would say, okay, well, most people just say, I’m good if you ask them how they’re doing, but I’ve never, I’ve never been down with that. Like if you asked me how I’m doing, I’m either going to be awesome. Which means like, I’m good. I use hyperbole when answering this question, uh, if I’m just okay. [00:00:48] And you know, I’m, I’m, I’m swell and if I’m bad, I will fucking tell you about it. [00:00:55] Christina: I really appreciate your honesty in answering that question because I often. [00:01:00] Am not like I, you know, people are like, how are you? And I’m usually like, I’m good. I’m fine. Even if I’m like hit by a car, like, you know, bleeding, like whatever I’m going to be like, I’m fine. I’m a wasp. Like, this is what we do. [00:01:13] Like, that’s like the probably waspy his thing about me is, is the, uh, you know, like need to say that you’re fine. Even when you’re not. [00:01:22] Brett: Yeah, I will tell you, like, if you’re in a zoom meeting and the host says, how are you guys doing today? If your answer is so awesome, it changes the mood of the meeting. [00:01:34] Christina: Huh? [00:01:35] Brett: Just try that next time. Someone searched a meeting off like that, just go off mute and be like, I am so awesome. And don’t answer any up life hacks. [00:01:47] Mental Health Corner [00:01:47] Christina: I like it. I like it. Uh, okay. So that’s actually a good segue into Brett’s mental health corner. Any updates? [00:01:54] Brett: Um, so what day was it? Yeah. It was a little manic, right? Last [00:02:00] time we, last time we were recorded. Yeah. Yeah. I had not slept. So that lasted all of one day. Um, and I’ve been, I haven’t been depressed yet. Um, I guess, I guess I have this impending feel this feeling of impending doom. Like it’s gonna get depression. [00:02:21] Uh, it’s gonna get depression, uh, that like that the depression is coming. Um, which is. [00:02:28] Christina: the loop, the looming, like on violence of like, yes, it’s coming. [00:02:32] Brett: It’s going to be shitty because work right now is super stressful. And they, like, I have a project that I’ve been working on pretty much since I started and I had finished it. And when I presented it, they were like, this looks great, except let’s do everything different. And like completely pulled the rug out from under me, move the goalposts down the field. [00:02:57] So now I’m scrambling. I’m like, oh my God, I’m [00:03:00] going to need, this is I need two weeks. And they’re like, can you do it in a few days? And I’m like, I will try. And then yesterday, my boss is like, Hey, so how about tomorrow? And, and I, so I’ve been working on it all day today, nonstop. I think, I think I did it. I think I did it. [00:03:21] I think I did two weeks worth of work in two days and I deserve a raise. But if it’s not good enough and I hit a depression and am not able to focus like this, I’m going to be fucked. [00:03:38] Christina: Yeah. I mean, I think at that point, like you told them, you

Transcript 251 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, um, this is Brett. Welcome to overtired. I’m here with Christina and our special guest, Aaron Dawson. Uh, first off, how’s it going, Christina? [00:00:14] Mental health corner [00:00:14] Christina: Uh, pretty good. I’m tired. Uh, which is good, I guess, for the name of the show, but yeah, I’ve had like three hours of sleep, so I’m, uh, I’m a little more tired than usual. Although I took my Dexedrine like right before we started recording. So in probably 15 minutes, I’m going to like, get my, you know, burst of like, you know, amphetamine, adrenaline or whatever. [00:00:42] We’ll, we’ll be able to hear it. I’m sure. Once it kicks in on the show, [00:00:47] Brett: I have you beat. I got two hours of sleep and I’ve been up since midnight. Uh, it’s not, it’s not a manic episode. I was just doing research for this podcast. [00:00:57] So Aaron, how much sleep did you get? [00:00:59] Erin: [00:01:00] Thanks for asking Brett. A solid seven, not to brag. [00:01:05] Brett: God damn. [00:01:06] Erin: Sorry. [00:01:07] Christina: fucking fucking neurotypical people. Well, I’m sorry to assume. And I’m not, I’m not actually assuming, cause you’re on our podcast. So, uh, there’s gotta be like something that makes you, you know, like special because we’re special types of assholes, but uh, seven hours. Congratulations. [00:01:26] Erin: thank you so much. Um, so what that seven hours though, it was a pretty shaky kind of sleep. So I went out last night, um, to a little cocktail bar and I felt okay about it because I got tested yesterday. I’ve been, um, doing a lot of travel recently cause I just moved from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh. So I’ve been in airports and I just wanted to be safe. [00:01:50] So I felt okay about it. Um, so even though I got a solid seven, I’m a little hoarse cause we stayed out a little bit. So. [00:01:59] Brett: [00:02:00] Um, Aaron and I had this really fun conversation once about an unnamed coworker. Like he has a name, but we’re not going to name him. Uh, [00:02:11] Christina: like, like X. [00:02:13] Brett: yes. Coworker X, uh, w we decided he was aggressively normal. Like speaking of neuro-typical, he was aggressively normal and, but it doesn’t bode well for either Aaron or me. [00:02:29] I shouldn’t talk for Aaron. Aaron, how do you feel about aggressively normal people? [00:02:34] Erin: It doesn’t bode. Well, if I could, if I can get into the mental health stuff, just right off the bat, uh, I have like a pretty quick like barometer for if I’m going to get along with someone and it’s completely vibe based. Right. And that, that sort of test is like, do I think this person has ever wanted to do this something harmful to themselves? [00:02:57] Or do I think this person has [00:03:00] ever struggled mental health wise? And if the answer is like a no in a hard, no, it’s gonna be a bummer because that’s kind of like the fountain vein emotional foundation, um, that I keep with other people. So I don’t think there’s, I don’t think that Mr. X has ever, ever, ever wanted to do that. Okay. [00:03:20] Brett: no, I highly doubt that. [00:03:22] Christina: Whoosh, you know, I mean, cannot relate, uh, personally, but at the same time, I’m kind of like happy for you, Mr. X. Like, I, I, I, 100% see where you’re coming from Erin. And you’re like, I don’t think we’re going to vibe. Cause this is like a core part of who I am and like cannot relate with him. Part of me

Transcript Overtired 250 [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, Christina. I actually don’t know who’s wicked as through the intro. [00:00:08] Christina: I think it’s your week, Brett. [00:00:10] Brett: Is it okay? Hey, everybody, you’re listening to over tired and I’m Brett Terpstra and I am here as always with Christina Warren, Christina, how are you? [00:00:20] Christina: I’m good. I’m tired. Um, uh, per the name of the show, but yeah, exactly, exactly. But I’m good. [00:00:28] Brett: That is that. Yeah, I’m, I’m in kind of the same boat. I’ve got up at four 30 this morning, which is an hour before I intended to get. So, um, I got that like tinge of tire, but also I went to bed at like nine 30. So it’s not like a horrible, horrible night’s sleep. I got a good seven hours. I’m okay. I’m not at my, like a hundred percent fully awake, but, but I can make this work. [00:00:54] I have a, I have a hard out for workshop today. So this episode might not be the [00:01:00] full 60 minutes, but I would, I would say we’ll get a full 50 minutes out. [00:01:05] Christina: Yeah. this’ll be w w we’ll we’ll give you your, your overtired money worth, right? [00:01:10] Brett: Yeah. Well, we’ll cram 60 minutes of content into just 50 minutes. That’s our guarantee. [00:01:18] Christina: That is our guarantee. [00:01:19] Brett: So do I sound good? [00:01:20] Christina: I was going to say, you sound really good. [00:01:23] Brett: Aye. Aye. Aye. Finally, after years of buying like one, maybe $200 microphone. And like then, you know, a year later buying a new microphone. I figured I’m just going to do the thing I always should have done and get the shirt [00:01:41] So now I have a, I have the legendary vocal podcasting radio microphone that is kind of the industry standard and it it’s like 400 bucks, but I shouldn’t have to buy another microphone. [00:01:58] Christina: no, no. I have one too. [00:02:00] I’m not using it because I’ve needed to set mine up. It’s a whole thing, but I’ve used it previously when we’ve recorded and, uh, it is an amazing mic. It’s the Michael Jackson one. [00:02:10] Brett: Is it really? What does that mean? Exactly? [00:02:13] Christina: uh, that means I I’m almost positive that that is the mic that he used when he recorded. [00:02:19] Brett: Oh, now, like it’s a microphone that inappropriately touches children. [00:02:24] Christina: No, no, it is not a molesting, uh, microphone. Uh, it, it, it is a, the majority, it’s not a pejorative is actually like in a good way. Uh, uh, I mean, I’m sure that the shore people at this point probably are like conflicted. They’re like, okay, on the one hand, one of the greatest albums of all. And, and Quincy Jones, you know, certainly one of the greatest producers of all time and, and, and, you know, fantastic recording. [00:02:51] On the other hand, the legacy of Michael Jackson, uh, is, shall we say complicated? [00:02:57] Brett: Yeah. So like the me too movement [00:03:00] really brought the idea of a second. Art from the artist, uh, to the forefront. But Michael Jackson was kind of the first time that in my life, we had to deal with like this amazing body of work and this irredeemable person, and being able to appreciate that work without justifying the actions of a monster. [00:03:26] Christina: no, I agree with that. And I think what’s for me anyway, what’s harder with Michael and it’s, and it’s an interesting thing because I almost feel like. I have to separate, like I can see Michael Jackson before 1993, which was when the first allegations against him became public. And after 1993, and I kind of feel like post 1993, Michael Jackson, like even the music and like, I, I w

I’m good. Um, this is take two for us because someone, yeah, this is. [00:00:16] safety for us because, uh, someone’s audio messed up. [00:00:20] Brett: It is. As of, as of right now, it is actually recording. This is, this is being recorded. [00:00:26] Christina: Okay. This is good. I’m really glad to hear that. I’m really glad to hear that. [00:00:30] Brett: yeah, yeah. So, uh, so you were saying in the last take, you didn’t get up at midnight today. [00:00:37] Christina: No, I didn’t. I did not get up at midnight. I got up. Six 15, which I think is an acceptable time to get up when you’re recording something like seven o’clock. So, um, I, I did not wake up super, super early or I guess stay up super, super late. Like it could go either way. So, um, I got up at like the adequate time for, you know, recording a, an [00:01:00] early morning podcast or mid morning as might be the case for you. [00:01:04] Brett: and, and you’re not tired. [00:01:06] Christina: No, I mean, I’m a little, um, like I think open to bed around one. So I got like a solid, like five and a half hours, which I [00:01:16] Brett: insane. How do you survive on five hours of sleep, [00:01:20] Christina: I don’t know. Cause I’ll probably end up taking a nap. I don’t know who knows. [00:01:23] Brett: man? I couldn’t do that five hours. Like, uh, if I got five hours of sleep, three nights in a row, I would be a mess. [00:01:31] Christina: Well, a, I find ways. Too sometimes, like, it’s usually like after work, but I sometimes, I mean, my sleep is so terrible. Cause what I’ll do sometimes it’s, I’ll like take a nap at 5:00 PM, which is stupid because then you wake up, it’s the dumbest thing in the world, because then you wake up at 11 and you’re like, all right, well I’m up until four now. [00:01:53] Like it’s just shitty. So just gets you into like a really bad like pattern. Um, [00:02:00] and then sometimes like tomorrow is Saturday, today is Friday the 13th. Ooh. And, uh, which, which I think is why, uh, we had some recording issues earlier and um, the best one would have blamed it on any way. And um, but tomorrow, Saturday, so I can, I can just sleep in, like I could sleep in until two I won’t, but, but I. [00:02:24] Brett: I am. Uh, I am a major proponent of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. [00:02:31] Christina: See, that’s, that’s smart. And [00:02:34] and I should do that. I just don’t do that. [00:02:36] Brett: I, when I’m manic, obviously I’ll go like days without sleep. And that will ruin like the next week or two for me, uh, like five days of like one to two hours of sleep per night. Absolutely not healthy. Um, but when I’m, when I’m normal, which I am right now, uh, yeah, I like eight and a half hours of [00:03:00] sleep and I go to bed at exactly nine o’clock. [00:03:02] I get up exactly. Five 30 it’s I like, I like consistency. It’s good. It’s good for the brain. [00:03:09] Christina: It is good for the brain. [00:03:10] And these are all very smart things that I should do, but that I don’t do. And I’m not like pretending, like I, you know, I, I know who I am. I know who I’m not. Um, I aspire to, to be as together as

[00:00:10] Brett: [00:00:10] I am. I am. I’m good. I’m good. How are you? [00:00:14] Christina: [00:00:14] I’m good. I’m good. I’ve been up like, this is kind of similar to last week when we recorded, except I’ve been up like way, way long. Um, like I fell asleep early again. It was one of those things I’ve been awake since like midnight. I don’t know. So [00:00:32] Brett: [00:00:32] Wow. [00:00:32] Christina: [00:00:32] it’s going to be one of [00:00:33] those days, [00:00:34] Brett: [00:00:34] I’ve been sleeping so much lately. I’m I’m in that like low energy part of my month with my like recent cycle of like manic episodes. Just, just regular depressive episodes. But I’m not, I’m not depressed. Like [00:00:49] I’m in a, I’m in a, great mood. Yeah, just super [00:00:52] tired, just, oh, and it’s bad timing with like the big hands-on lab coming up. [00:00:58] Christina: [00:00:58] Yeah. Yeah, [00:01:00] because you’re in crunch time. Um, first, uh, I guess we should get into that. Um, for Brett Brett’s mental health corner slash uh, bread set, work update, um, things work out okay. With work with you not having the thing done. Like I, like I [00:01:14] Brett: [00:01:14] Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Everything’s cool. Uh, the guy building the lab came through and I was able to write up all of my stuff. Um, a little bit. There, I wished the lab was more interactive. Like that’s kind of the point of a hands-on lab is to really be hands-on. But in order to, in order to change, like if you wanted to play around with the, the inputs to the machine learning, it takes 40 minutes to compile the changes [00:01:46] in a two hour lab that [00:01:48] is. Untenable. So we’re basically, we’re, we’re explaining to people like how to do this on your own. And they have like 30 days of, uh, like $500 in credits to [00:02:00] use with the cloud platform. So they’ll have plenty of time to play with it. And my goal is to make sure they, they know how to buy. End of the lab. So that’s, you know, that’s my responsibility. [00:02:11] I’m cool with it. Things are going well. I learned the hard way that Jupiter lab does not autosave. I had gone through, I had spent an entire day like adding notes to the notebooks so that people could understand what was happening, uh, change, how, like I went in and changed the legends on all of the charts that it output so that they made more sense. [00:02:34] Uh, They were not written by a native English speakers. So tons of, of minor edits. And I just assumed, like, because in this day and age who hits save like everything auto saves, but then my computer crashed, which is another problem I’m having lately. And, uh, and, uh, I lost a whole day of, uh, of edits. So, you know, that was cool. [00:03:00] [00:02:59] Christina: [00:02:59] Yeah, no. When you told me about that, like, I felt so bad and then I actually looked into It Cause I thought I was like, I thought Jupiter notebooks had autosave and it does, but I guess maybe whatever you were using didn’t work or maybe you didn’t have the interval set the right way or whatever. [00:03:12] Brett: [00:03:12] It saves checkpoints, but you still have to manually hit save. [00:03:18] Christina: [00:03:18] okay. Also, I will confess here that at this point, I use visual studio code [00:03:24] Brett: [00:03:24] Of course you do. Yeah. Yeah. [00:03:27] Christina: [00:03:27] well, you know, but this is the lesson you and I learned. I mean, this is actually like the ultimate lesson, which is like, never write in

[00:00:07]Brett: [00:00:07] You are listening to Overtired I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with Christina Warren, Christina, how are you [00:00:14]Christina: [00:00:14] I’m pretty good. I’m pretty good. It is early for me. It’s like six 30 in the morning. However, I’ve been awake since, I don’t know, like it’s either two or 3:00 AM, so, um, well, not really. So I kind of like took a nap late that sort of went to like going to bed really early and then my body woke up and then I was like, well, I know I have to be up to do the podcast. [00:00:42] And I have a bunch of other stuff I need to do today. So am I going to be able to get any sleep or not? I wasn’t really sure. And then I wanted like taking my meds at like 5:00 AM. So kind of on purpose? [00:00:53] Brett: [00:00:53] Yeah. Okay. I I’ve done that. I’ve done that many times. [00:00:57]Christina: [00:00:57] Yeah, I’m actually way more, [00:01:00] I’m not a morning person. Um, however, like I like, you know, the, the evenings much more I’m, I’m a night owl. I’d like to stay up late, whatever. However, if I can actually wake up early and get started, I’m so much more productive for the entire day. So it’s one of these weird things where I’m not a morning person, but I really need to try to force myself into being. [00:01:22] Brett: [00:01:22] I love mornings so much because nobody else is up. I nobody interrupts me. I don’t have to worry about anyone pinging me on slack or giving me a phone call. I just get up. And I just, I usually code in the morning, but I get up at five 30 and my Workday doesn’t usually like start in earnest until 10:00 AM my time because most of the team is in California. [00:01:46] So that’s 8:00 AM their time. Or they’re overseas and they’re like on a completely, like 12 hour off schedule. So I get this nice space from like 5:30 AM till like [00:02:00] nine where it’s just like, just my time to code. I love mornings. And I get up at five 30 and like sometimes, like I set an alarm for five 30, just cause I like consistency, but I, wake up every morning uh, for the last month or so I wake up at 5:26 AM. [00:02:22] Just automatically and I’m just ready to go. And then I shut off my alarm. I like it when my system agrees with my schedule. [00:02:30] Christina: [00:02:30] Yeah. Um, I I’m the person who, unless I’m already up or whatever, I have like four alarms set usually. And then I’ll also hits news. Number of times, it’s one of those things where like, I ha I have a built-in buffer for what time I know I have to actually be up like, so I have like an early time. I’m like, Okay. [00:02:50] well, this is what time I would like to be up, but I know I’m going to hit snooze at least this many times. [00:02:57] And I know that I’m going to in [00:03:00] my own mind, like reset alarms and do other stuff. So let me go ahead and preset alarms for like, I have a bunch of them and then it’d be like, okay, what’s the absolute latest that I can be up. Like, for instance, I had one set. I didn’t need it, but I had one set for six 20 and one set for 5 45. [00:03:17] I had one set for six o’clock. I had one set for six 20, knowing knowing that six 20 was like, okay, that was the absolute latest. You can get up to do this at six 30 [00:03:27] Brett: [00:03:27] Why, why wouldn’t you just set the alarm for the la

Transcript Overtired 246 Christina: [00:00:00] [00:00:00]You’re listening to overtired, but Terpstra is out because he had to get surgery or something. I don’t know. Faker. Anyway, I’m Christina Warren and I’m here with the amazing Ashlea Asqueda. Ashley, how are you? [00:00:19] Ashley: [00:00:19] I just, I don’t know if there’s like, uh, maybe cosmic exhaustion, like w that’s I’m going to go ahead and upgrade this episode of overtired to cosmic exhaustion [00:00:31] Christina: [00:00:31] Cosmic exhaustion. Okay. So that’s what the, that’s what the podcast is called for this episode. Welcome to welcome to cosmic exhaustion with Ashley and Christina. [00:00:40] Ashley: [00:00:40] Yes. Yes. It’s just, just a, just a perpetual state of exhaustion. Just everything is exhausting, everything. It’s just like all the time. The internet is exhausting, Christina. [00:00:54] Christina: [00:00:54] It’s exhausting. Okay. Talk to me about that. Like, what are some of the things that are leaving you? So [00:01:00] cosmic leaks. [00:01:01] Ashley: [00:01:01] I think yesterday, I, you know, I think watching Jeff Bezos touch the edge of space, uh, you know, while we’ve got teachers who have Amazon wishlist full of stuff they need for the school year that Jeff Bezos could literally just fulfill out of pocket for nothing for literally. I mean, he would not even notice a [00:01:23] Christina: [00:01:23] He wouldn’t even notice he’d get a tax write off. [00:01:26] Ashley: [00:01:26] would get a tax write up, like, just like I saw at the end, like at the a hundred million dollar fund, whatever that’s fine. Like van Jones is already rich, so I don’t know what, who that helps. Like, I’m fine, but. I think it would have been better for Jeff Bezos to have. And I know that the reason that he did that was the optics of it, right? [00:01:46] It’s like, oh, you’re spending all this money to like, fly your weird penis, rocket up into space. But it’s like, I knew you, he knew when he came back down, there would be the, the discourse, right? It’s like the [00:02:00] discourse of how much money he has versus the haves and haves nots and income inequality and all that stuff. [00:02:05] So he knew he had to come back down and bring something. So he did that like big, oh, I’m, we’re going to give a hundred million dollars to certain, you know, conversation makers who are trying to make the world a better place, whatever. [00:02:17] Christina: [00:02:17] blah, blah, blah. [00:02:18] Ashley: [00:02:18] but really all he had to do was be like, if you’re a teacher and you qualify, you can submit. [00:02:23] And he had how much time to work on this. Just so much time. He had it over a year that we knew this was happening for a long time months, at least. Um, and it’s not like he doesn’t have the money to throw at an accelerated development pace to say, if you’re a teacher submit your credentials. And if you are verified as it as an educator, Amazon is going to wipe out your wishlist and send everything you need to, to you for the school year up to a certain dollar amount, $5,000. [00:02:59] What have [00:03:00] you? I don’t, I don’t know how much I’m not a teacher, so I don’t know how much money they would need every year, but I know it’s a significant enough amount of money that they need to put, put together an Amazon wishlist. So,

I am good at for those, uh, for those tuning in for the first time we have a wild ride in store for you, uh, for our regular listeners. This is just going to be, you know, another week, but we’re winging it. We’re winging it. [00:00:26] Christina: [00:00:26] We’re winging it. No, you have a lot of lists of, of suffers to talk about. We’re not totally winging it. Like we’ve got stuff that we need to talk about. Um, the Emmy’s, uh, nominations just came out and. [00:00:36] Brett: [00:00:36] still happening? [00:00:38] Christina: [00:00:38] It is still happening? [00:00:39] and they’re going to be in person again, I’m guessing. And, but the Emmy nominations came out yesterday, but which actually fits in quite nicely because you have a bunch of TV shows on your list, but first, uh, let’s get a breadth mental health corner update. [00:00:53] Brett: [00:00:53] This depression has really stuck around like it’s it’s. This is, it’s [00:01:00] been over a week now, which is unusual for me in my more recent history. Like it used to like two weeks was just expected, but lately with like almost zero manic days and then just light depressions going on for more than a week is kind of a, it’s kind of a unusual. [00:01:18]Christina: [00:01:18] Yeah, that sucks. I’m really sorry to hear that. So, and, and it’s. For a week though, hasn’t it? Cause when we talked last week, it seemed like it had been a week. So [00:01:27] Brett: [00:01:27] it is. No, I don’t think it had been a whole week last week. I think, let me do some math in my head. I think I started feeling shitty around. Yeah. Yeah, right around the six or seven. So, so I think last time we talked, I was just starting to feel depressed. And now, now I’m like a seasoned professional. [00:01:51] I’ve been doing this for over a week and it’s weird. Like I’m. I’m not down. Like, I, I don’t hate myself. [00:02:00] The world doesn’t look dark. I’m actually pretty excited about a lot of things. And like, I, I wake up every morning with like ideas and, and like, I’ll make forward motion on work projects in my sleep, because I’ll be like super productive in my dream. [00:02:17] And then the day will start and all of my motivation just gets sucked out. And I just, I just stare at the screen and I mean, I’m getting shit done. Like I w it’s it’s, it’s typical ADHD thing where if there’s a deadline and there’s a little bit of pressure, I’m gold, like I’ll get there. No problem. Uh, as far as like anything else, especially creative pursuits, I’m just kind of I’m listless. [00:02:44] Christina: [00:02:44] years listless. Yeah. No, I feel that. That’s so true about the ADHD thing. And it’s hard for me sometimes to describe that the people who aren’t ADHD, because I’m like, no, I need a deadline, even if it’s arbitrary, because that’s the only way I can get this done. Like I had a meeting with someone. A [00:03:00] couple of weeks ago. And they were in the past side, I’d had a project that I worked on with them, with an Inn. Um, and I Totally. [00:03:06] understand why they were frustrated because, um, we wouldn’t start on time. And the reason we wouldn’t start on time is because I knew I could push and they were okay with pushing and like, they didn’t ever tell me, like, we need to do this. [00:03:17] And then I went and I started working on a similar project with another team and I was like, Hey, look, I had my stuff tog

Transcript Overtired 244 [00:00:00] Brett: [00:00:00] You’re listening to overtired. Welcome. I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here with Christina Warren. It’s good to be back. How are you, Christina? [00:00:07] Christina: [00:00:07] I’m I’m doing pretty good. Uh, it’s early for me. So I, and I just took my Dexedrine. So you’re probably gonna hear me get more awake as the show goes, but I’m fine. Uh, how are you before we, we address, uh, the fact that we haven’t talked together in a couple of weeks, how are you doing [00:00:28] Brett: [00:00:28] Well, so here’s the thing. The thing of it is I [00:00:33] Christina: [00:00:33] what was happened? Was. [00:00:34] Brett: [00:00:34] mm, my mother-in-law. My ex-mother-in-law used to always say the thing of it is. And it, it, it, it, it drove me nuts. It’s fine. She’s not my mother-in-law anymore. Um, anyway, uh, so I’ve got some depression going on, which is bad enough on its own. And then yesterday I gave myself food poisoning, not once, but twice and not like [00:01:00] real food poisoning. [00:01:01] Like, I’m pretty sure it was all in my head. Like, I, I ate something that tasted off. Like, it was definitely off like spoiled, but like, I don’t eat meat. Like I don’t get like food poisoning from like legit food poisoning, but it, it, it tasted off in my body revolted against it. And I started puking and then the taste was stuck in my mouth. [00:01:27] And like, every time I would taste it, I would wretched again. [00:01:32] Christina: [00:01:32] oh God. [00:01:33] Brett: [00:01:33] I thought, so it happened with an egg sandwich in the morning. [00:01:38] Christina: [00:01:38] Okay. No. Okay. You get legit food poisoning from eggs. Okay. [00:01:41] Brett: [00:01:41] right. Here’s the thing, here’s the thing, the thing of it is, is that I think, I thought it was the egg, but the egg didn’t smell off. Like when I cooked it, it, it like, everything seemed fine and I’ve never had an egg that was bad and didn’t at least look a little bit bad. [00:02:00] So, but I was like, okay, so, so the, the egg was bad and I got through it in the morning and I, uh, I had my lunch and then like, I’m seeing a nutritionist now. [00:02:11] And part of my diet is I’m actually allowed to eat like bread. So I was going to enjoy a piece of toast in the afternoon. And I got halfway through the piece of toast and realized it was what it was, where that taste was coming from. [00:02:26] Christina: [00:02:26] Oh no. So the bread was like moldy or bad or whatever. [00:02:29] Brett: [00:02:29] I guess I looked at it, it looked fine, but yeah, definitely had this rancid, weird indescribable flavor to it that it did not have, you know, two days before. [00:02:42] And, uh, and yeah, why I did it again, and that was right before we were supposed to record yesterday. And so I just, I said, we’re gonna, we’re gonna wait a day and I won’t eat any more bread and I haven’t, I have not eaten anymore bread at all. [00:03:00] [00:03:00]Christina: [00:03:00] Good. I’m glad. I, I, uh, I I’m really glad, uh, I hope you threw the bread that you pap away. [00:03:06] Brett: [00:03:06] Yeah, I [00:03:07] Christina: [00:03:07] good. [00:03:08]Brett: [00:03:08] I did. It took, it took twice. I really like bread. [00:03:13] Christina: [00:03:13] I like bread too. You can buy more bread. Uh, clearly the bread that you had though was bad. Like you can get new bread. [00:03:21] Brett: [00:03:21] Yeah. Um, so, uh, last week you, uh, you, you, you did, you did your own thing, kinda. It was an episode with two Christina’s was the way I described it to people. [00:03:34] Christina: [00:03:34] it was pretty great though. [00:03:35] Brett: [00:03:35] Yeah. You seem to have fun. IR

I’m Christina Warren, Brett Terpstra is having internet problems. And, uh, so he’s been a little bitch and isn’t on the show. So our good friend, Ashley Esqueda is here. Ashley. You’re amazing. You got up at six 30 in the morning to record this. How are you? [00:00:28] Ashley: [00:00:28] I overtired. That’s how I’m [00:00:30] Christina: [00:00:30] I fucking love it. I love it. [00:00:32] Okay. So, but this is why I’m really glad you’re here because Brett would have no concept of why it was amazing that Nick Carter was in a tech talk with the members of Insync. [00:00:43] Ashley: [00:00:43] oh, we’re going to get into some geriatric millennial stuff [00:00:46] Christina: [00:00:46] Thank you exactly. See, he’s all a gum Jew. I’m generics. I’m too cool for this. [00:00:51] Ashley: [00:00:51] too. Cool. [00:00:52] Christina: [00:00:52] And it’s like, no, fuck you. First of all, even if we were gen X, we still would have known this. Cause like my sister is gen X and she would not have been as [00:01:00] delighted as me because she was a full ass grown lady when the, you know, um, great wars of in-sync versus Backstreet [00:01:08] Ashley: [00:01:08] band wars. [00:01:09] Christina: [00:01:09] Yes. Yeah. W what team were you by the way? [00:01:12] Ashley: [00:01:12] Okay. So I was so really I’m, I’m an old ass old ass millennials, so I was a new kids on the block girl way back in the day. And then, um, and then I, like, I think I liked in-sync songs better, but I liked, I liked the guys in Backstreet [00:01:30] Christina: [00:01:30] Okay. So see, okay. I was kind of the reverse, but I’m with you in that, in the fact that like, everybody always says you could pick one, I’m like, yeah. But see, I, I loved like the Insync pop songs were really good. Uh, I thought the backstreets ballads were, were amazing. [00:01:45] Ashley: [00:01:45] Okay. Yes, I [00:01:46] Christina: [00:01:46] Okay. And then the one that I wanted to fuck was JC. [00:01:50] So [00:01:51] Ashley: [00:01:51] I mean everybody did. Everybody did like anybody who says it was anyone else. Like you’re a liar and get out. [00:01:57] Christina: [00:01:57] thank you. But like everybody else, people like, oh, I love Nick or I [00:02:00] love, you know, Brian or whatever. I’m like, I’m like, no, no. I’m like, I’m like JC, JC Shay was the only one, in my opinion of all 10 of them who was absolutely hittable. Exactly. Like he was the one I was like, yeah. [00:02:10] Okay. I will do him. But like the rest of them didn’t care anything about, and he, he, he kind of, he’s not really that hot anymore though. He still has his hair. So if you lost a little bit of weight, like I’d, I’d be down, but I know that’s being like, you know, body, [00:02:27] Ashley: [00:02:27] your personal taste? That’s a personal taste [00:02:29] Christina: [00:02:29] Awesome. It [00:02:30] Ashley: [00:02:30] he seems like he’s thriving. I’m [00:02:32] Christina: [00:02:32] thriving. It’s actually upsetting to me because he was the best. Justin Timberlake has even gone on record and said, this, Justin Timberlake has even been like, I [00:02:42] Ashley: [00:02:42] is the worst, by the way, like the absolute worst human being. [00:02:46] Christina: [00:02:46] absolute worst human being. He’s terrible human being made some really good albums. Not going to lie about that. [00:02:52] Ashley: [00:02:52] No, I got, look, I, I loved I, there are some ex not, not recently, [00:02:58] Christina: [00:02:58] no, no, no, no. The [00:03:00] woods album was, was real weird, but [00:03:01] Ashley: [00:03:01] is weird. Um, but let’s go w

Transcript Brett [00:00:00]Christina: [00:00:00] You’re listening to overtired. I’m Christina Warren. He’s Brett Terpstra Brett, how are you doing [00:00:07] Brett: [00:00:07] I am good. How are you? [00:00:10] Christina: [00:00:10] good. I am a little tired. So I’m recording this at 6:42 AM my time, which is early. But that’s okay. I’m actually glad we’re doing it at this time because I have like meeting pocalypse today. So I have a brief break from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. But other than that, I’m basically booked from the time we do this podcast until 5:00 PM. [00:00:37] Brett: [00:00:37] Yeah, I have meetings basically from I’ll have a half an hour after we end this podcast, unless we go over and then I’m, I have a block of about, it’s only about two and a half hours of meetings, but. [00:00:50]Christina: [00:00:50] Yeah, no. So I’m just going to, I can’t read what they’re for although it’s cool stuff. So I have my therapist at 8:00 AM. Then I have a meeting from 905 to nine [00:01:00] 30. Then I have an hour and a half break. Then I have 11 to 1140, then 1145 to 1220, then 1230 to one 10, then two to two 30, then 3 0 5 to 3 45, then four o’clock to four 40. [00:01:15] Brett: [00:01:15] schedules, a meeting from 3 0 5 to 3 45. [00:01:20]Christina: [00:01:20] They’re doing this thing now and it’s actually a pretty good idea. I’m sure that you will see people probably attempt this. Now that you’re in corporate life too, but there’s apparently with some research done that if you start meetings five minutes later, then that’s better for people or something. I don’t know, dude, I don’t, I’m not the management consultant person. I don’t get paid the money to tell the people how to do this stuff. I don’t care. But apparently because you always wait five minutes for people to get on the meetings anyway, starting them at 3 0 5, starting with the five minute mark that gives people a break between meetings. [00:01:52] I don’t know. I’m not even, I don’t know, but anyway that’s my meetings. I also just got back [00:02:00] from orange county because I was with my friend Juliette for five days, which was awesome. I got home at 10 30 last night, anyway. [00:02:07] Brett: [00:02:07] So I want to come back to the scheduling conversation in a minute, cause I have a cool app to tell you about. But first I want to tell you that I had a physical this week and I’m not dying. Like I was super nervous going into it because my blood pressure has long been an issue. And. It has been it has been mentioned that if I don’t fix my blood pressure, they’ll take away my stimulant medication. [00:02:35]And we know what happens when that happens. So I was very fearful. I went in my blood pressure was like one 20 over 84 which is fine. I don’t know anything about blood pressure, [00:02:47] Christina: [00:02:47] I don’t either. Except my low. [00:02:49] Brett: [00:02:49] but they had no problem with it. It didn’t even come up and everything I’m not, I’m a little overweight, but other than that, I’m seeing a nutritionist next week [00:03:00] voluntarily. [00:03:01]Not because I’m diabetic or anything yet. But yeah, I’m feeling a great sense of relief after passing a physical. [00:03:09]Christina: [00:03:09] Nice. Very happy for you. That’s awesome. I’m glad that you’re not dying. I’m a little overweight you can deal with. If they’re happy with the blood pressure. That’s good. Cause you don’t want to like, like you said, you don’t want to get rid of those [00:03:22]Brett: [00:03:22] Stem Sims. Yeah, no,

Transcript Brett Brett: [00:00:00] [00:00:00]Hey, you’re listening to overtired. I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with Christina Warren, Christina, how are you? [00:00:11] Christina: [00:00:11] I’m good. I don’t know what time zone I’m in, but I’m good. And, uh, how are you? [00:00:16] doing we’re recording finally, there were some hiccups that I think you want to talk about. [00:00:22] Brett: [00:00:22] so many hiccups. I mean, scheduling a loan. [00:00:25] Christina: [00:00:25] I know. [00:00:26] Brett: [00:00:26] I’ll be lucky if this act, if you’re listening to this on Friday, something went really well. There’s a good chance. That’s episode comes out on Saturday. There’s also a good chance. That’s only 30 minutes long because we’re busy people and things got, uh, just what’s the word for when everything goes sideways. [00:00:43] Christina: [00:00:43] fucked. [00:00:44] Brett: [00:00:44] Yeah, everything got fucked. Yeah. So anyway, w last time when we first tried to record this episode, I, I got on and there was this loud hissing that I just assumed was Christina, and then it wasn’t Christina. [00:00:59] Christina: [00:00:59] It’s a [00:01:00] good assumption, but it was not this case. It was actually not my fault. [00:01:03] Brett: [00:01:03] And I, I th so I want to talk about cable management. Uh, I want to come back to this topic, but I ended up taking everything apart. Like I have so many boxes and cables that everything plugs into trying to figure out where this was coming from. And the thing was it’s only in Skype and the audio recorded from the microphone while on the Skype call has no hits at all. [00:01:29] And it’s all very confusing, but I had a zoom call right after and the audio is fine. So if you could talk to Microsoft about this, um, it’s Skype, it’s all Skype [00:01:42] Christina: [00:01:42] Okay. Um, if I knew the Skype [00:01:45] people, I would, and I think they would probably politely listen, but I’ll try. [00:01:49] Brett: [00:01:49] when it does that thing. When you end a call and it says, how was the quality of your [00:01:53] Christina: [00:01:53] Oh yeah. I can do like one. [00:01:56] Brett: [00:01:56] I’ll I’ll do it. It’s it’s it’s my problem. I’ll take care of [00:02:00] [00:02:00] Christina: [00:02:00] I’ll do it too. And then I’ll write it. [00:02:01] I’ll be like, you’re doing something to our audio and we don’t know What it is because it’s recording cleanly, but you’re adding noise and we don’t like it. [00:02:10] Brett: [00:02:10] What do you want us to do? Use Google Hangouts. Come on, [00:02:13] Christina: [00:02:13] Fuck sake. Come on, zoom. [00:02:16] Brett: [00:02:16] everyone. Everyone else is recording through. Like newer, more modern technologies and only people like you may. And, uh, I guess some old school podcasts are still recording on Skype. [00:02:31] Christina: [00:02:31] Yeah, I mean, the thing is, is that it has its issues and I’m not defending that, but it’s also like one of those things where, because I have to use zoom for some things, but zoom is such a shitty company. Like they’re, they’re really just such a terrible company and their policies are just so God awful. [00:02:47] Like the product is good and I’m not, I’m not discounting that. And, and people who choose to use the product, what they’re, because they’re forced to, or because they genuinely just choose to, I have no animosity towards you. Do you like genuinely like [00:03:00] pick whatever the best tool is for you? But for me, if I have a choice, I would rather not like give them. [00:03:07] Access to my stuff because they’ve installed malware on my Mac and I’m, I don’t know, I’m salty about that. Like they, they straight up installed malware on people’s computers. [00:03:17] Brett: [00:03:17] yeah. Yeah. I used to, if I ever back in the day before for like anyone

Transcript Brett Christina: [00:00:00] [00:00:00]Too overtired. I’m Christina Warren. He’s Brett. Brett, how are you? [00:00:10] Brett: [00:00:10] I am it’s. It’s free. We’re recording on Friday. We usually record a day or two early, but we went all the way to Friday this time. So I am in the Friday mood. I have no idea what’s going on. I’ve let go of everything. I’m an empty void. [00:00:26]Christina: [00:00:26] Uh, I, I bad, like, it’s been a crazy week for me because as I was telling you before, like I, as I mentioned last week on our episode, I, um, Microsoft build this week. And so. That means that even though, like, my shift was like the final hosting ships was like the final shift, the, of the, um, events. So I was, I like, my call time was 9:30 PM. [00:00:50] And then I left the studio at like 8:00 AM, um, the following day. So that was Wednesday night to Thursday morning. The whole week was still taking up with, [00:01:00] with doing pre stuff, doing some pre-records and doing some other things. And so I’ve been hands down with that. And then as soon as build ended, I got like an hour and a half of sleep. [00:01:09] And then I jumped on an airplane and, um, flew to Atlanta and drive last night, got a rental car. And so grant and I are in Atlanta, uh, hopefully to visit with the baby. The baby is not here right now. And my sister’s being incommunicado, which is typical of her. Uh, so, um, I, I hope I, I mean, we’re going to see the baby because if I have to drive to her house, like just unilaterally make the decision. [00:01:32] Like after we finished recording our podcast, because I didn’t fly all this way to not see a baby, but anyway, [00:01:38] Brett: [00:01:38] you in Atlanta? Just like two weeks ago. [00:01:40] Christina: [00:01:40] I was, I was, and she really didn’t want me to leave. And so I’m here and now she’s being like incommunicado. So not that I’m [00:01:48] Brett: [00:01:48] like either babies or your sister. [00:01:52] Christina: [00:01:52] I don’t like either is the thing like, uh, but I do like this baby, but I, I just felt like she needed me here. [00:01:59] Grant [00:02:00] wanted to meet the baby. We had, you know, long weekend. So I booked a flight. She really didn’t want me to leave when, when I left. And so I felt like bad. And so I immediately like booked a flight, like to be as good as possible for that stuff. And [00:02:16] Brett: [00:02:16] sister. [00:02:17] Christina: [00:02:17] I try, I try, but anyway, so [00:02:21] Brett: [00:02:21] I’ve never been there in that regard for either of my siblings. We don’t have close relationships. It’s very, very surface level. I’m better friends with some of my like friends than I am with my own siblings. [00:02:35]Christina: [00:02:35] Oh, I mean, that’s 100% true for me. Like that’s completely accurate, but, uh, and the same would be true for her, right? Like I should absolutely better friends with some of her, um, you know, people in her life then with me, but I don’t know this is different. Um, this is, this is a more unique situation and I don’t know, I just felt like I needed to be there and it was the right thing to do. [00:02:57] So I’m here. So I’m [00:03:00] a little bit frazzled as well. So I apologize to the listeners for that. I’m actually recording this on my mom’s laptop because I was trying to help get her password situation under control. We’ll talk about that. When we talk about tech things, she has a system where she has a notes file that is very long where she’s basically recreated the one password app where she has like her username and password and a unique password for each thing. [00:03:21] And I’m like, mom, I got you with one password account. Like. A year and a half ago, she’s never used it. So I’m just going to have to go

Transcript Brett [00:00:00] Brett: [00:00:00] I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here with Christina Warren and you are listening to overtired. See, I did it a little bit out of order, but I still pulled it off. I’m getting way better at this. [00:00:10] Christina: [00:00:10] Totally getting better at this. [00:00:11] It’s actually very, very good. How are you Brett? [00:00:15] Brett: [00:00:15] How many years have we been doing this? Now? [00:00:18] Christina: [00:00:18] Seven. [00:00:20] Brett: [00:00:20] It took me way too long to figure out how to do intros. [00:00:27] Christina: [00:00:27] I mean, in fairness to me, we did have like, we were consistent and then we weren’t [00:00:32] Brett: [00:00:32] Yeah, there was a couple years in there for me to get rusty. Again, we have, we’re more consistent now than we ever have been. [00:00:42] Christina: [00:00:42] I know it’s, it’s actually pretty great. [00:00:45] Brett: [00:00:45] Yeah. Yeah, no, I, uh, this is, uh, a regular part of my weekend. I enjoy it. So how’s your mental health this week? Let’s just jump right into it. Like regular segments. How are you doing. [00:00:57] Christina: [00:00:57] I’m doing. [00:00:58] pretty well. I’m tired, [00:01:00] um, is early as I’m recording this, but, um, cause we had to make some adjustments for your job, which completely great. Like I have no problem with that at all. Um, but I am, I’m, I’m a little bit tired, but I’m okay. Um, I’m a little frazzled this week and next week because Microsoft build is next week. [00:01:18] And so I’ve got all this stuff that I have to do. All of these things have been promised for and stuff that I’ve got to get ready. Cause I’m hosting next week. And there, like all these side projects that happen and on the one hand, like that can be stressful. But on the other hand, it’s almost like easier not to focus on other externalities that might be, you know, not because you’re just busy. [00:01:40] Brett: [00:01:40] Sure. Yeah. Like throw yourself into your work kind of thing. [00:01:44] Christina: [00:01:44] Yeah. Basically like, yeah. When, when you’re so busy, you can’t really like focus on anything else, but yeah, I I’m. Okay. Um, I, uh, you know, I was, I was home with my family for 10 days and I didn’t, it is weird because I want to, I want to preface this by saying I [00:02:00] would never move back home. Like that would never be a thing, but it, it, it has been like, you know, it was really nice seeing everybody, and it was really hard to leave and, and that, it was like the first time that it was like really difficult for me to leave. [00:02:12] And, um, I’m actually going back at the end of next week for the Memorial day weekend. Uh, so, uh, cause I need to get my airline status anyway. So, uh, you know, might as well, but, um, but Grant’s going to go with me, um, on that trip, but yeah, it was, it was harder for me to, to leave than I thought that it would be. [00:02:34] And, uh, that surprised me. [00:02:36] Brett: [00:02:36] How was flying? [00:02:38] Christina: [00:02:38] It was fine. Um, you know, everybody wears a mask. I should preface this by saying that I used upgrade certificates in my status. Got me one of the ways upgraded without using one. So I was in first class, but the planes that I was taking because of how they’ve rearranged routes and stuff, um, well, they, they sometimes have these planes configured, even pre [00:03:00] COVID, but it’s the, it’s the business class flights. [00:03:03] So it was like the international planes. So your first class seat is like a lay flat seat rather than the typical thing. Well, yeah, I purposely book those flights for that

I feel like that should be our theme song. Oh, wait. It is. [00:00:16] Christina: [00:00:16] Oh, wait. It is. [00:00:16] you did you made that our theme song? So tell me what’s been, what’s going on. [00:00:21] Brett: [00:00:21] Oh, meetings, meetings, meetings. And it’s not like I have to pay a lot of attention in about half of them are only tangentially related to me at this point, but I have to be there. Uh, and so there’s still like that energy drain of. Of looking good on camera. Um, it I’ll get used to it. I swear. I will like, I, this is just my life now and I have to deal with it. [00:00:47]Christina: [00:00:47] Makes sense. Um, I, uh, I don’t, I’m trying to think of one point of the pandemic. I just stopped turning my like camera on. Um, but it did. [00:01:00] get to that point, for sure, for me, [00:01:01] Brett: [00:01:01] I tried that I felt guilty because like out of 20 people in the meeting, I was one of only two that didn’t turn their camera [00:01:11] Christina: [00:01:11] Right. No, see that’s always, the weird thing is like, what’s the social, like stigma on. [00:01:15] this stuff. And I’m always like, ah, like, yeah. [00:01:19] Brett: [00:01:19] I am the only person in those large meetings with a messy office, like my [00:01:24] Christina: [00:01:24] Oh, I hate that shit too. [00:01:26] Brett: [00:01:26] On camera. It is clear that I work in the basement and it is, it’s not a disaster, but I would call it cozy for an ADHD person it’s cozy. Um, everyone else has the sterile white background sometimes with artwork and plants and I’m like, shit, I can’t compete with that [00:01:46] Christina: [00:01:46] I know I look at that too. I look at that too. And I’m like, yeah, bro, blur filter. [00:01:50] put in some other things. Sometimes I just turn it off. Cause I’m like, I don’t want you to see the mess that I’m in, that I’m trying to do. I’m like, I’m trying to get my office in a good place, but this is one of the many things I hate [00:02:00] about like the current remote culture we’re in. [00:02:02] And like, I know you’ll always be from home, but now there’s this weird. But like before, like when more people are in the office, if you do have the person who’s remote. Like, you’re not staring at them necessarily. Like you don’t feel on display even if you’re the person who’s calling in, because you’ve got a bunch of people in a conference room it’s just, it’s different. [00:02:21] And now it’s like, Oh, I have to have my camera on. And I do I need to have makeup or can I not? Or do I. You know, have to like have my background clear or like, what if they see that I’m in a kitchen someplace? You know what I mean? Like it’s just, there’s, there’s all these politics around like showing off your place. [00:02:39] And I’m like, I don’t get paid enough to buy a house, to have room to, you know, do a lot of these things. So it’s Yeah. [00:02:47] Brett: [00:02:47] There’s one guy who’s like, he’s like a manager on our team and he always shows up, uh, On screen on a treadmill. So he has like a treadmill desk, I assume, but he, [00:03:00] like, he spends the whole call bobbing up and down a little bit. And it’s comforting. Like I keep thinking I’m going to break out my treadmill desk and we’ll just be like treadmill bros. [00:03:10] But, um, and there’s one woman who. Who clearly, like she has kids running around in the background. And so if you have kids runni

[00:00:08]Christina: [00:00:08] I’m um, it’s going really well, Brett, and yes, you totally nailed that intro. [00:00:13] Brett: [00:00:13] Um, so you’re not in, like Seattle? [00:00:16]Christina: [00:00:16] I’m not in Seattle right now. No, I’m not. Your girl got on a plane. I’m in Atlanta, Georgia. Cause I got on a plane for the first time in 14 months. Pretty awesome. And uh, I’m I’m at my parents’ house. I’m on the floor right now. Uh, literally, because this is the only place I could find a set up my microphone and I’m, I’m an aunt now [00:00:41] Brett: [00:00:41] Is this the first time you’ve been an aunt? [00:00:44] Christina: [00:00:44] biologically sure is. [00:00:45]Brett: [00:00:45] What, what, what is non biological aunt, aunt hood like? Yeah. [00:00:50] Christina: [00:00:50] I mean it’s similar, but it’s different. It’s like, but you know, I have a lot of friends with kids who call me and Christina. [00:00:56]Brett: [00:00:56] I had some aunts when I was a kid that I [00:01:00] later found out were not at all related to me. [00:01:02] Christina: [00:01:02] Yeah. I had, I had my aunt Betty and some other people like that, too. Exactly. Thank you. Thank you, Christian, Eastern war. And not to be confused with me, Christina Easton, Warren, uh, was born on May 1st and, uh, mom and baby are doing well. Uh, there was, uh, there was, uh, unplanned C-section because, uh, his shoulders were a little bit too big for Kelly’s body. [00:01:27] Uh, yeah, but he’s, he’s doing well. They’re doing well. So he was born on Saturday and then were released from the hospital on Wednesday. I got in on Wednesday. So I’ve been it’s now as we record this Friday and, uh, I’ve been, um, with the family soaking up, uh, baby time. It’s uh, it’s pretty great. He’s he’s a chill baby so far. [00:01:48] So, uh, the dog likes him a lot, which is good. It’s Kelly has a, um, um, she has, she has a, she has a poodle administer [00:01:58] Brett: [00:01:58] It would suck to have to rehome [00:02:00] the baby. [00:02:01] Christina: [00:02:01] It really would, it really would have to rebuild the baby would not be a good thing. Note that the boo bear, the dog is, is, is in love. And, um, the family everybody’s doing well, but yeah, so babies, man, [00:02:16] Brett: [00:02:16] Yeah. So we, we typically do not get excited about babies, but I feel like, uh, you you’ve, you’ve softened in the face of actually having one in the family. [00:02:29]Christina: [00:02:29] I mean like, look, babies are generally bullshit. Right. And I’m not saying that like, I’m completely changing my stance on that, but I’m also super happy for my sister. And, uh, yeah, I’ve, I’ve softened a little bit. I can’t lie. He’s so tiny. Um, also like I get to be the cool aunt. I don’t have to like pay for his college. [00:02:51]Brett: [00:02:51] Well, I mean, you could so my grandma paid for my college, uh, which was [00:03:00] super handy, I guess. Uh, I had no student debt when I came out. um, I don’t think that’s the place of an aunt. You’re right.
