Transcript Erin [00:00:00] Introduction and Guest Introduction Brett: Hey, welcome to Overtired. It’s me, Brett Terpstra. Um, Christina and Jeff are both out this week, but I have Erin Dawson here to fill the void. Hi, Erin. How you doing? Erin: Hi Brett. I’m well. How are you? Brett: I’m, I’m, I’m okay. So before, like, for people that haven’t tuned in with an episode with you before, give your, give yourself a brief introduction. Erin: Hey folks, my name is Erin. I, uh, make art under the name Genital Shame. I’m based in Los Angeles, California, and I used to work with Brett Terpstra. Siri Mishap and Water Troubles Erin: I’m doing, I’m doing, uh, you know, that broadcast voice, but I’ve started to. When I’m using CarPlay, I’ve started to speak to Siri in my own Siri kind of as a bit, but I really enjoy doing it.[00:01:00] Hey Siri, play REM. Oh shit. It just, I shouldn’t have done that. I’m so sorry. That activated mine. Um, oh no. And now my home pods are doing it. Can you hear that? Brett: I can Erin: I literally have to turn that off now. I really apologize. Ready? Brett: we’ll wait. Erin: Anyways, that’s, this is a shit show. Okay. I’m turning it off. Uh, that’s who I am. I’m someone who activates, um, the, the dingus. Brett: activates digital assistance. That’s amazing. Um, so update on me. I got water back after four and a half days with no running water. Um, but now I’m showering and washing dishes like a pro. Erin: Oh my God, I’m so that, that truly sounds horrific. Brett: It was, you don’t realize exactly how much of your life [00:02:00] revolves around just running water. Um, it’s true of like anything, when your power goes out, when your internet goes out, when your water goes out. We’ve had all of those things happen frequently over the last year. Um, and you, you realize exactly like how handicapped you are without these kind of. The modern conveniences we take for granted? Erin: Did your pipes break? Brett: No, uh, they did freeze. Uh, the solution to the water problem was heat lamps on the well pump. On the on the pipe, the underground pipe that goes from the well pump into the house is about a foot underground, and that’s where the freeze happened. So we had heat lamps on the ground for two days while we were waiting for a plumber to show up. We just decided to try heating things up and after two days it finally creaked [00:03:00] into life, and then we ran a bunch of water and got it all cleared out. And then you Erin: have a TLC show. Now you’re Brett: you know, Erin: solving Pioneer Living. Uh, Brett: You know what happened because of that, to flush the toilet while that was happening, we were melting snow on the stove and on the fireplace and dumping it into the toilet. But when I first started, I didn’t know you could just dump like a gallon and a half of water into the bowl and it would flush. So I was filling the tank up, which takes about twice as much water. And because I was doing that, I was putting a bunch of silt from the snow. Into the tank. So the little, the rim holes around the inside of the rim of the toilet where the water swirls in those filled up with silt. So once we got running water again, the toilet wouldn’t flush all the way. And I had to go in with a coat hanger and try to clean out all of those holes in the toilet. An

Transcript AI Agents and Political Chaos Introduction and Host Updates Christina: [00:00:00] Welcome back. You’re listening to Overtired. I’m Christina Warren. Joined as always by Brett Terpstra. Jeff Severns. Guntzel could not be with us this week, um, but uh, but Brett and I are here. So Brett, how are you? How’s the cold? Brett: The cold. Brett’s Water Crisis Brett: So I’m going on day four without running water. Um, I drove to my parents last night to shower and we’re, we’re driving loads of dishes to friends’ house to wash them. We have big buckets of melted snow in our bathtub that we use to flush the Toyland. Um, and we have like big jugs with a spout on them for drinking water. So we’re surviving, but it is highly inconvenient. Um, and we don’t know yet if it’s a frozen pipe. Or if we have [00:01:00] a bad pump on our, well, uh, hopefully we’ll find that out today. But no guarantees because all the plumbers are very busy right now with negative 30 degree weather. They tend to get a lot of calls, lots of stuff happens. Um, so yeah, but I’m, I’m staying warm. I got a fireplace, I got my heat’s working Christina: I mean, that’s the important thing. Brett: and that went out, that went out twice, in, twice already. This winter, our heat has gone out, um, which I’m thankful. We, we finally, we added glycol to our, so our heat pumps water through, like, it’s not radiators, it’s like baseboard heat, but it, it uses water and. Um, and though we were getting like frozen spots, not burst pipes, just enough that the water wouldn’t go through fast enough to heat anything. So we added glycol to that [00:02:00] system to bring the freeze point down to like zero degrees. So it’s not perfect, but we also hardwired the pump so that it always circulates water, um, even when the heat’s not running. So hopefully it’ll never freeze again. That’s the goal. Um, and if we replace the well pump, that should be good for another 20 years. So hopefully after this things will be smoother. Political Climate and Media Suppression Brett: Um, yeah, but that, that’s all in addition to, you know, my state being occupied by federal agents and even in my small town, we’ve got people being like, abducted. Things are escalating quickly at this point, and a lot of it doesn’t get talked about on mainstream media. Um, but yeah, things, I don’t know, man. I think we’re making progress because, um, apparently Binos [00:03:00] getting retired Christina: I was going to say, I, I, I, I heard, I heard that, and I don’t know if that’s good or if that’s bad. Um, I can’t, I can’t tell. Brett: it’s, it’s like, it’s like if Trump died, we wouldn’t know if that was good or bad because JD Vance as president, like maybe things get way worse. Who knows? Uh, none of these, none of these actual figureheads are the solution. Removing them isn’t the solution to removing the kinda maga philosophy behind it. But yeah, and that’s also Je

You are listening to Overtired and I am Christina Warren, and I’m joined as always by Jeff Severance Zel and, uh, Brett Terpstra couldn’t be, uh, here with us in this, uh, happy early 2026 episode, but I’m, I’m super excited to be able to kick off the, uh, the first pot of the year with you, Jeff, how are you? Jeff: I am good. Happy New Year to you. Christina: Likewise, likewise. Um, oh, here, here, here’s to 2026 being significantly better than 20, 25. So Jeff: So far, not so good, but I’m, I’m really, I’m really excited about 2026. I’m Christina: I was gonna say, like, like globally, globally, so far not great, but, but, Jeff: in here. Good in here. Personal Updates and Health Challenges Christina: So, um, so how are, uh, uh, how, how, how is the, I guess a, I guess we can kind of a drill into like a, a brief kind of mental health or, or just personal update thing if we want. Um, how, um. How are things for you so far? Um, I guess the end of the year. How are things with the kids? Um, the [00:01:00] wife, everything. Jeff: the, how the year ended is, and that gets us back to almost a political level. I will save for a topic ’cause boy do I have a story. Um, but, uh, generally speaking, doing really well. Like we traveled, saw my dad and stepmom in Iowa. Saw my in-laws in Indiana, had a really nice, just like generally had a really nice time off. Um, and despite the fact that I’m under a super stressful deadline over the next few days, I feel good. How about you? You got a lot going on. Christina: I, I do, I do. So I guess just kind of a, a, an, an update on, um, the, uh, the Christina, you know, cervical spine, um, saga since we last spoke a couple of weeks ago. Um, I guess maybe two weeks ago now. Um, uh, it was maybe a week ago. Um, uh, it was two weeks ago, I think. Sorry, it was, it was right before Christmas. Surgery Details and Insurance Woes Christina: Um, I was still awaiting, um, hearing back about when I would be scheduled for, uh, surgery and I’m getting, um, uh, artificial disc replacement in, um, I guess [00:02:00] between like C six, C seven of my cervical spine. And I do finally have a surgery date. Yay. Um, the bad, yeah, the bad news is it’s not until February 2nd, so I’ve gotta wait, you know, a month, which sucks. Um, I would have been able to get in, you know, uh, three weeks ago at this point. Um, had I been able to like, I guess like book immediately, but without insurance, like approval, um, I didn’t really want to do that. Um, I think, I think people, uh, can understand why, like, you know, when the doctor’s like, well, we can book you now, but you’ll just need to sign some forms that say you’ll be responsible for the bill if insurance doesn’t pay. Jeff: Oh fine. Get Where’s my pen? Christina: right, right. And I’m like, yeah, this is, you’re gonna keep me overnight just for, you know, observation to make sure like nothing bleeds or, or, or whatever’s a problem. Um, ’cause they’re gonna go through like the, the, the front of my, of my neck to, to be able to reach, you know, um, things that way and, and, and so, [00:03:00] you know, and be under, you know, anesthesia, you know, it’s, it’s, it’s not like a huge critical procedure, but it’s still neurosurgery. Transcript Universal Serial Bitching Introduction and Greetings [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, you’re listening to Overtired. I am Brett Terpstra, and it’s just me and Christina Warren this morning. How you doing, Christina? Christina: Doing pretty good. Doing pretty good. Yeah. This is the, this is the OG Overtired configuration. Brett: right back to basics. Um, Christina: We do miss you Jeff, though. Ho, ho, ho. Hope that Jeff is having a great holiday with his family. Brett: we’ll have to have some, uh, gratuitous Wiki K hole that you go down just to, to commemorate the olden days. Um, so yeah, let’s, uh, let’s, let’s do a quick check-in. Christina’s Health Update Brett: Um, I’m curious about your health and all of the wildness that’s going on with your spine and whatnot. Christina: Yeah. Yeah. Um, same. I wanna hear about you too. Um, so, uh, Christina’s cervical spine update, as it were. Um, I am [00:01:00] still waiting to, as we’re recording this, which is like. Uh, three days before Christmas, uh, I’m still waiting to hear from the, uh, hospital to see if I can, when I can get scheduled. Um, insurance has sort of been a pain in the ass, so when I talked to them last week, they were like, we sent them some paperwork. We’re still waiting for some things back then. I called the insurance company and the, the, uh, like my insurance is like, has like an intermediary service that is supposed to contact the insurance company on your behalf and that person, but like, I can’t contact them directly. And then that person was like, oh, you don’t need pre-authorization. Go ahead and schedule the surgery. And I’m like, this doesn’t feel right. Um, so, but, but we, we went ahead and we called back the, you know, the, the surgeon, um, his office and they were very nice and we were like. They say that we can get on the books. So I don’t know when that will be. I’m hoping that it will be, you know, like the first week of January, um, or, or, or thereabouts. Um, but I don’t know. Um, [00:02:00] so I am still kind of in this like limbo stage where I don’t know exactly when I’m gonna have the surgery, except hopefully soon. And, um, and, and for anyone who hasn’t caught up, I, uh, I have a bulging disc on C seven on my cervical spine, and I’m going to get a, um, artificial disc replacement. Um, so they’re gonna take out the, you know, bulging bone and all that and put in, uh, some synthetic piece and then hopefully that will immediately relieve the, the pain that has been primarily through the left side of, uh, my arm and my shoulder, um, uh, down through my fingers. But it’s been on my right side a little bit too. So hopefully when that is done, it’ll be a relatively short recovery. Um, I’ll have an early scar and um, I will be, you know, not. Uh, the pain right now, like the

The three of us are all together for the first time since the Carter administration. Um, it is great to see you both here. I am Jeff Severance Gunzel if I didn’t say that already. Um, and I’m here with Christina Warren and I’m here with Brett Terpstra and hello to both of you. Brett: Hi. Jeff: Great to see you both. Brett: Yeah, it’s good to see you too. I feel like I was really deadpan in the pre-show. I’ll try to liven it up for you. I was a horrible audience. You were cracking jokes and I was just Jeff: that’s true. Christina, before you came on, man, I was hot. I was on fire and Brett was, all Brett was doing was chewing and dropping Popsicle parts. Brett: Yep. I ate, I ate part of a coconut outshine Popsicle off of a concrete floor, but Jeff: It is true, and I didn’t even see him check it [00:01:00] for cat hair, Brett: I did though. Jeff: but I believe he did because he’s a, he’s a very Brett: I just vacuumed in Jeff: He’s a very good American Brett: All right. Christina’s Health Journey Brett: Well, um, I, Christina has a lot of health stuff to share and I wanna save time for that. So let’s kick off the mental health corner. Um, let’s let Christina go first, because if it takes the whole show, it takes the whole show. Go for it. Christina: Uh, I, I will not take this hold show, but thank you. Yeah. So, um, my mental health is okay-ish. Um, I would say the okay-ish part is, is because of things that are happening with my physical health and then some of the medications that I’ve had to be on, um, uh, to deal with it. Uh, prednisone. Fucking sucks, man. Never nev n never take it if you can avoid it. Um, but why Christina, why are you on prednisone or why were you on prednisone for five days? Um, uh, and I’m not anymore to be clear, but that certainly did not help my mental health. Um, at the beginning of November, I woke up and I thought that I’d [00:02:00] slept on my shoulder wrong. And, um, uh, and, and just some, some background. I, I don’t know if this is pertinent to how my injury took place or not, but, but it, I’m sure that it didn’t help. Um, I have scoliosis and in the top and the bottom of my spine, so I have it at the top of my, like, neck area and my lower back. And so my back is like a crooked s um, this will be relevant in a, in a second, but, but I, I thought that I had slept on my back bunny, and I was like, okay, well, all right, it hurts a lot, but fine. Um, and then it, a, a couple of days passed and it didn’t get any better, and then like a week passed and I was at the point where I was like, I almost feel like I need to go to the. Emergency room, I’m in pain. That is that significant. Um, and, you know, didn’t ge

Transcript 100 Days Sober with Erin Dawson Welcome Back to Overtired Brett: [00:00:00] Hey everybody. It’s been a minute. How, how, how are you? How, how is everybody out there listening to Overtired for the first time in, I don’t know, two months, months? Christina: like that. Months is all Brett: was a, it was a, it was a nice break I am here. I am Brett Terpstra. Christina Warren is here. Hi Christina. Christina: Hey there. Brett: And we’ve got special guest, Aaron Daw. Aaron Dawson. I am, I almost said Dawson’s Creek for some reason. Aaron, how are you? Erin: I am well, Brett and Christina, how are you? Christina: Yeah, I’m okay. I’m okay. It’s been a, it’s been a few months since we’ve been here. Um, I think everybody’s had a, a interesting summer and, um, so yeah. Uh, glad, glad to be back talking with you guys and see, see what you’ve all been up to. Brett: Yeah. Erin: I’ve used the Dawson’s Creek thing. Uh, if, if there’s a a a a din, the denin of a bar is too [00:01:00] loud and I’m, I’m closing out and I’ve, and I’ve done this motion with my hand by my neck, like I am going to it. That’s the motion to either you want to kill someone or you’re closing out. Um, and it’s Dawson and they’re like, huh. And it’s Dawson, like the creek, and it works like a charm Christina: Yeah, I was gonna say, yeah, that, that, that’s gonna be one of those that they’re like, okay, got it, got it. Mental Health Check-In Brett: So Christina, how’s your mental health? Christina: It’s okay. It’s been better, but it’s been worse. Um, I’m, uh, going through some stuff right now that I’m not going to talk about on this podcast . So, um, that I, that I hope will, will, will work itself out. But, um, um, yeah, it, I, I’m Okay. How about you? Brett: I don’t, I, I went to the hospital again for just a day and a half this time. Um, the end result of which being I had to completely cut out alcohol. Um, so most of my mental health [00:02:00] in this moment I’ve, is around like, just ending something that I was pretty reliant on, um, for a lot of things and finding new, uh, activities, new ways to deal with energy and, um, I’ve been really happy coding. I, I get up around 3:00 AM every morning. I write code, I, I usually stop coding by about 11:00 AM and then just chill and watch movies and ride my bike, exercise bike and whatnot for the rest of the day. Um, and that makes me really happy and I don’t miss having a day job at all. Um, but, um, there will come an end to my unemployment benefits and I will need to have this app I’ve been coding on, published and making money by then. Um, and that’s [00:03:00] causing a little bit of anxiety some mornings more than others. Um, I, it’s so close, but I’m just like with NV Ultra, I’m stuck on the getting paid part, uh, working in all the payment processors and everything and tr

Transcript Horror Movies and Heatwaves Welcome to Overtired [00:00:00] Christina: Hello again. You are listening to Overtired. I’m Christina Warren. I’m joined as always by Brett Terpstra. This week we are without our third, uh, Jeff SREs Gonzo, who is uh, uh, having home of jet skis. But, uh, but Brett and I are back doing an old school Overtired. How are you, Brett? Brett: I don’t know. I don’t know, man. Like he’s like, I got a family thing, and then he sends us pictures of him on a jet ski and I’m like, where are your priorities, man? What about Overtired? Come on, Christina: exactly, exactly. It’s like we, we, we, we are definitely more fun than, Brett: then a jet ski. I find that hard to believe. Jet Ski Adventures and Dubai Memories Brett: I’ve never been on a jet ski, but Christina: Oh, they’re great. They’re Brett: just see them as like an expression of pure joy on water. Christina: Yeah. I, I went in Dubai of all places, actually, uh, in a manmade lake. And, um, and, and, and at we, we’d called in advance, like before we got there, we were like. Can I [00:01:00] wear like a two piece bathing suit? Right. Because I, I was concerned about that. And, and yes. And they were like, she can wear whatever she wants. And I was like, okay, well I’ll still keep it like conservative, like more conservative than like my normal bathing suit would be, even though I had like a life vest on or whatever. And then we get there and they only had four jet skis and there were five of us. And, uh, one of my, my colleagues was like, my, one of my best friends actually, he was like, no, she gets her own. So they had to go back and like, get one for me, but, but they just assumed that I was gonna ride like bitch on someone’s, um, a jet ski. And I was like, no, I, I would like to do this. And, and I did pretty good. Um, one of our colleagues, like he, he’d never been on one before and, and he had the time of his life. I think he went buying one himself after, after, after it. But yeah, no, it was really fun. So Jeff’s photos, the video rather, that he sent to us, like, um, pure joy and, uh, so we missed you Jeff, but also completely understand. Comedy Shows and TV Nostalgia Brett: Before Daniel Tosh got really annoying and awful. Um, [00:02:00] he had a special where he talked about how no one can frown on a jet ski, like you would always smile on a jet ski. It went into like some dark version of a kid’s funeral. But, um, but back then it was funny back then, like Daniel Tosh was like, you know, hitting Christina: No, totally. Brett: still, like I was cracking up Christina: No. I mean, Brett: bit about the, the midgets in the parade that killed me. I was dying. Christina: no, we can’t say that word anymore, Brett: I know the little people in the parade. Um, but I believe the word he used Christina: right? No, I I I’m just, I’m just fucking with you. I don’t, I d

Transcript Not As Nerdy As I Thought [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, you’re listening to Overtired. I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with just, just severance gun. So Christina Warren, due to scheduling conflicts, cannot be with us this week. Um, so you are in for a Brett and Jeff nerdy episode. Um, not that Christina can’t get nerdy like she totally can and does, but something we get, we get weirdly like not productivity nerdy when it’s just the two of us. I don’t know. Jeff: Yeah. Brett: Yeah. Yeah. Mental Health Check-in Brett: So, um, we can kick it off with our, our usual mental health coroner. Mine is pretty short and sweet. Um, mentally I am. Finding myself just extremely happy with not having a job. Um, not enjoying the, like the health insurance loop, uh, [00:01:00] hurdles and not having like predictable regular income as, but not, I’m not, not enjoying it so much so that I don’t appreciate having all this time to just focus on like my commercial projects and all of this coding, and I’m finding it super rejuvenating to just like wake up in the morning and start coding and take regular breaks to do whatever the fuck I want. And then. Ultimately, like the, the next version of Marked is the biggest leap marked has ever made in functionality. And I’m super proud of what I’m about to release, and I think it’s gonna be profitable, but also like extremely useful. And that’s all just really good for my mental health. Carpal Tunnel Surgery Brett: I did have, um, carpal tunnel surgery. Jeff: Ooh, look at that. He just raised his fist in [00:02:00] the land of hypocrisy. Uh, Brett: It, I did the total like black power fist too, but yeah, I have a Jeff: you’re white, which makes it a problematic white power fist, but whatever. At least it’s got a gash in it. Brett: Yes. So they did just one small incision. They stuck a camera into my palm through that incision and snipped, uh, not, not, uh, ligament across the middle of my palm. And um, that led to a couple days of super achy hand and they gave me no painkillers. So I’ve just been working with Tylenol and Ibuprofen for a couple days, but today doing pretty good. I got the bandage off this morning. And, um, I will say as far as mental health goes, pain is, um, very detrimental to my mental health. [00:03:00] Uh, I, I am very sensitive to pain. Like I have tattoos, I have brands. I’ve, I’ve been through a lot of things where I intentionally like subjected myself to pain, but mostly because pain, because I’m so sensitive to pain. I also get like a major endorphin rush off of pain. And so like I kind of just seek it out. But there are a couple types of pain, like low lying aches and tooth pain that I get zero pleasure from. Jeff: Tooth pain is brutal. Brett: I hate it so much. I hate it. I hate it so much. Um, but yeah, so that’s my mental Jeff: Was the surgery like a outta nowhere thing or did you have it planned Brett: Um, so I’ve had numbness in my fingers, uh, especially on my right hand, but moving into both hands for like five years now. And I had had wrist pain a long [00:04:00] time ago and had been

Guntzel could not be with us today. Uh, we miss you, Jeff. Hope you’re having fun with the family. Um, so it’s a, it’s just a classic OG Overtired for once. Brett: Yeah. Are you tired? Sleep Struggles and Medication Christina: Um, I was a little bit, so I went to bed. So we are recording this right now at 11:00 AM um, uh, Pacific. Um, so a little bit later than we usually record, but I went to bed around 4:00 AM Pacific. So I woke up originally I did actually set an alarm. We were going to record at 10 and I set an alarm for nine 30 and I woke up and I sat, I hit snooze and I was about to text you and be like, I could really use another 30 minutes. And you had texted me literally that second, asking for like 30 minutes or an hour, and I was like, perfect. And then I think I slept maybe 20 more minutes. Um, and then, and then I woke up and um, and, and Brett: So yeah, you’re tired. Christina: Yeah, I mean, Brett: be tired. Christina: well, I should be, but I got like, you know, uh, six, six [00:01:00] hours or so, so that’s, that’s pretty good. Brett: I got nine hours of sleep last night and I’m still dragging, but I think it’s because for like two weeks now I’ve gotten six hours of sleep every night and that kinda racks up over time. And then the night that you do sleep well, then all the sleep deprivation like hits you the next day. I could barely get out of bed this morning. Christina: No, totally, totally. Um, yeah, I have, I, I don’t know if it’s because of like medication switch or what, like, and it’s a weird thing because I, I, the amount of dray I’m taking right now, I feel like is probably the right amount, but I don’t know if I need to like, but this is what the hard thing is. Like I’m, I’m taking 15 milligrams. I probably need to maybe take it like. Twice a day, um, like in terms of like maybe half, one, half the day, but half the other, I, I, I don’t know. But, but the 15 milligram will last me the whole day. The problem is it’ll also like, basically last me the whole night too. And so I am, [00:02:00] I’m at like, Brett: I thought, I thought that’s what you, I thought it had a shorter half life, Christina

I mean, I, I’m also like very curious, but you’re even more so than me. Like I will go down a rabbit hole on almost anything with anyone, even if it’s something that I’m not that into. In a hilariously ADHD (or just friendly chat) episode of Overtired, Christina wants everyone to know she’s definitely not an anarchist, while Brett and Jeff dive deep into the world of tech and political activism. Amid laughs and nostalgia, they discuss everything from the pitfalls of memory at work, lock boxes for protests, and the anarchist vs. black bloc debate, all while petting cats and reflecting on TV shows that keep them sane. Tune in for tech tips on carabiner and Kali Linux, and find out why Jeff treasures his time in the car with his sons. It’s chaotic, heartfelt, and genuinely overtired. Transcript Undiagnosed Dialog Introduction and Reunion [00:00:00] [00:00:04] Christina: Well, hello again. You’re listening to Overtired and the three of us are back. I’m Christina Warren and I’m joined. Yay. By all three of us, uh, or by my other two co-hosts, Brett Terpstra and Jeff Severns. Guntzel. Hey guys. [00:00:17] Jeff: Hello. [00:00:18] Brett: episodes in a row have we had? Three of us. Is it just two? [00:00:22] Christina: I think this is [00:00:22] Brett: like a bunch, [00:00:24] Christina: I think this is just two. [00:00:26] Jeff: Not enough [00:00:27] Brett: have such, I have such a short memory. Memory Lapses and Work Challenges [00:00:30] Brett: Like as far as I’m concerned, we’ve never missed an episode with all three of us. Like I, I don’t wanna talk too much about work, but that’s bitten me at work. The fact that I don’t remember, like last week, [00:00:43] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. I have to, like, I, I, I tend to have a good memory, but sometimes I’ll forget certain things. And so in that regard, I have to like, um. Like write things down, like keep like a running list of like, these are things you need to do, these are things you [00:01:00] have done. Like these are things you didn’t get to do. [00:01:02] Christina: Whatever. [00:01:03] Brett: This is not my gratitude pick, but I’ve started making liberal use of timing the app. Um, ’cause it tracks like what document I have open for how long. And I can, like, I can just, I can drag a whole bunch of different, uh, stuff like, uh, documents, websites, et cetera, into one task. Um, because I am currently in a position where I have to report my, my workday to people and, um, so I can, I can easily scrap together, uh, a daily report and then I, it pops up and asked me what I was doing when I was away from my computer so I can write like, surprise visit from the utilities company that took half an hour. [00:01:55] Brett: Um. Utility Guy Story [00:01:56] Brett: Dude showed up at my house, just pulled into the [00:02:00] driveway and started banging on shit. And I walked out and I was like, Hey, what’s up? And he said that the meter reader had reported tight wires. [00:02:15] Jeff: That sounds like an amazing code in like the Cold War. Cold War, the meter reader has recorded tight wires. Got it. I’ll meet you at the place [00:02:25] Brett: So he was, he was pulling on shit, banging shit. And, [00:02:30] Jeff: to loosen the wires. [00:02:31] Brett: and ultimately he said, and I quote, I’m not gonna fuck with it. Um, [00:02:37] Jeff: just, you just bang on it for a. [00:02:40] Brett: well, he was like seeing like, are these wires tight? Um, and like I, my, my, uh, power comes in. I have like a rooftop, not an antenna, but like a post. That it’s all overhead, uh, power that comes in from the [00:03:00] cables on the street into the top of my house and down in,

Transcript Two Truths and a Lie With Cory O’Brien Introduction and Special Guest Announcement [00:00:00] Brett: Hello, welcome to a very special Overtired. I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with Christina Warren and Jeff Severns Guntzel. And this week we have the Long Promise special guest Corey O’Brien, author of Two Truths and a Lie. How’s it going, Corey? [00:00:21] Cory: It’s going great. Happy to be here. [00:00:23] Jeff: Hi, Corey. We’re saying hello. [00:00:30] Brett: Um, yeah, so we’re, we’re definitely gonna talk about the book. I have filled Corey in on kind of our usual format, and he’s down for, for playing along with what we usually do. So, um, I, I feel a little weird jumping right into Mental Health Corner. I want a little bit more robust of an intro. Corey O’Brien’s Background and Career [00:00:54] Brett: So, Corey, tell us a little about you. [00:00:58] Cory: Uh, sure. [00:01:00] It’s a, it’s a, it’s a big question. [00:01:02] Brett: It is. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. That was so vague. [00:01:05] Jeff: Tell me who you are. [00:01:06] Cory: all right. Uh, I am a writer game designer man about town. I, [00:01:15] Jeff: that’s you. I saw. [00:01:16] Cory: yeah, yeah. I’m all over the place. You see a guy that’s me [00:01:20] Jeff: That’s you. [00:01:20] Cory: watching you, counting your teeth. Uh, I, I, uh, I, I used to write a website called, uh, mire Told where I would tell mythology like it was 3:00 AM and I was drunk in a chat room. [00:01:34] Cory: And I did that. I did that for many years, parlayed it into a small level of notoriety that somehow got my publisher to pitch me to everyone as the beloved internet humorist, which I still, I still find kind of embarrassing. But, uh, then, then over time, like what I’ve always wanted to do is write books. Uh, and so over time sort of parly the notoriety from the blog into.[00:02:00] [00:02:00] Cory: A career writing for video games. Uh, I’ve written for, uh, the comedy dating sim called Monster Prom. And then, uh, my favorite game that I, that I worked on is Hollow Vista, but you can only play it if you have an iPhone, unfortunately, which I don’t, I haven’t even played it in its native environment. I’ve played it, I’ve played it in like a browser version, but, uh, and then, uh, and now I work for like, um, for like fancy 3D games, writing dialogue, trees and stuff. [00:02:29] Cory: But, uh, my, my number one passion is writing books and I’m very excited that I finally have this novel out. And so that’s, that, that, that brings me to this present moment. [00:02:41] Christina: Um, so. Transition to Fictional Writing [00:02:43] Christina: How, how, um, I guess what was your process, I guess, moving from, uh, have you been like, I guess like writing short stories, like your whole life, uh, you know, I know you’ve done the, the, uh, the, the humor thing and, and you’ve worked, um, you know, um, game stuff. But what was, I guess, your process of transitioni

[00:00:21] Brett: Right, like, and we have sponsors lined up for the foreseeable future, by which I mean like a month, but like this could be, this could be for some period of time, a regular podcast, um, which, you know, we’ve. How long have we been doing this? [00:00:41] Christina: Like, like 11 or 12 years. [00:00:44] Brett: Yeah. With, with some extended breaks in there, but, but every once in a while we get into a groove. [00:00:52] Christina: Hey, look, we were in a, we were on a groove for like two years. We were like on a really good place. We were like in a really good place, but no, we’re, we’re in a groove. So, um, I’m, I’m, I’m glad to be back and recording with you. Exciting Book Interview Announcement [00:01:13] Brett: I’m really excited next week. So I, here’s the story and, and I won’t tell the whole story next week because I’ll tell it this week, but I am on these lists for like Penguin and random house, and they send me galley copies of books as if. I’m like a bookstore or a book reviewer or something. And I don’t know how I got on these lists, but yeah, I’ll take free books. [00:01:40] Brett: I’ll take free, like pre press books. That’s cool. Um, and I got this one called two truths and a lie, and it’s a cyberpunk. Like Gibson ask, not like modern cyberpunk. It’s like Gibson, like Mona Lisa overdrive era, [00:02:00] Gibson style, cyberpunk. And, um, and it’s all, it plays with the idea of like memory and data as currency. [00:02:09] Brett: And, um, it’s like a queer love story at its heart. And I, I loved it. I loved it. And the agent that sent me the book, um, got, got us an interview with the author. So next week we’ll get to talk to them. And I don’t know if you guys, like you guys got copies, but you’re under no pressure to read them. Cause I’ve read the whole thing twice. [00:02:34] Brett: So like I can lead the interview, but if you have, like, if you’ve read any of it. Then, then you can chime in on, on plot points and whatnot. [00:02:44] C

Christina, how’s it going? [00:00:11] Christina: I’m good. I’m good. Christina’s New Job at Google DeepMind [00:00:12] Christina: Uh, I am no longer unemployed since we last talked. I, I have, I went on a cruise and uh, and then I started a new job. [00:00:21] Brett: I, I’d be willing to bet that there are a lot of people in our audience who are dealing with the frustration of how hard it is to find a job right now. So everyone’s jealous of you just hopping around between jobs like a, like a, like people used to in tech [00:00:39] Christina: No, I [00:00:40] Brett: jobs got so hard to get. [00:00:42] Christina: No, look, I, I, I don’t in any way, like I’m, I’m, I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful. Um, so, uh, I, I, my new job is I, I’m working in, uh, developer relations, um, at Google DeepMind. So that, that was, uh, that was the job that I took and I’m, I’m, um, I’m really excited. Um, I’m, it’s been a couple of weeks, uh, since I [00:01:00] started, there’s a ton to learn, um, uh, a ton of new processes to, but, but there’s a ton to learn in both ways, both about the company and how they work compared to, you know, what I’ve been doing the last. Three years at GitHub and then culturally kind of, you know, like five years before that at Microsoft. Um, and then, um, there’s a, just a ton to, to get caught up on, on, on all the, the, the Gemini and, and, um, AI studio and, and, and Jim of the open model stuff. So there’s just been, uh, it’s been, um, a lot, but, um, I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful that I have a job and that, that I was, you know, um, I guess like able to do, like you said, kind of like the traditional job movement kind of thing. [00:01:41] Christina: So Job Market Challenges [00:01:42] Brett: Did you know that while unemployment is still pretty low, um, and it was like record low a couple years ago, but it doesn’t [00:01:52] Christina: that was a lie. [00:01:54] Brett: but job hiring, job hiring is actually at [00:02:00] like great depression rates right now. Like it is, there’s a job freeze out there and I know I felt it like I’m ready to, I’m ready to look around, but the more I look around and the more I do like initial interviews, the more I realized, like, I just don’t have a lot of options right now. [00:02:17] Brett: And, um, I’m grateful that I have a certain amount of stability with my job right now. We’ll see how long that lasts. [00:02:24] Christina: Yeah. I mean, the only thing that I’ve kind of like come to terms with over the last like few years is it’s like the only certainty is that there is none, right? Like the days of stability, um, I think in, in, in big tech, like regardless of like where you are, like is gone, which is. Um, because that was obviously like [00:02:44] Brett: Oh, it used to be, yeah, [00:02:45] Christina: used [00:02:46] Brett: I can barely remember that, but it used

I, Christina: the start. Jeff: it’s a weird number. I don’t, it’s a weird one. I was like saying to somebody, maybe I wrote this, that like, I feel like I, turning 20, turning 30 felt like skin in my teeth, like I barely made it, and, uh, 40 felt like inevitable and kind of, uh, disappointing, and, uh, and 50 feels [00:01:00] good, weirdly, just feels good, feels like, yeah, I made it, it feels like I made it, like, uh, it feels like a, not a finish line, but like, alright, cool, I made it this far, everything else is bonus. It wasn’t even that much stuff, but like, it was enough. It was like a mini van load [00:02:00] and then like, get it. We had an hour for setup and then we did the party and then we had to break it down and. For some reason, maybe it’s cause I’m 50. That was exhausting. And I felt hung over the next morning despite not drinking at all. Christina: No, I think that that’s fair. I think that’s fair. I think that that’s one of those things where it’s like, um, you’re totally like allowed to be, um, what was it going to say? Like tired and, and all that other stuff. Like, it’s just, just one of those things. Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. And also it’s a tiring day. Inauguration Day and Mental Health Jeff: We don’t have to get into it, but it is inauguration day. Um, and we can. Probably Christina: Yeah. And, and that, and, and that’s basically all we have to say about that. Jeff: no, but it is, I do think it’s, it’s lending to a sense of, um, of malaise. Christina: Oh, for, for sure. For sure. No, I, cause it was one of those things. So like, um, uh, I’ll get into it with, with, when we talk about mental hea

Transcript I Can’t Follow Beautiful [00:00:00] Introduction and Hosts [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, you listening to Overtired, I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with Jeff Severns Guntzel. Christina is on her usual, uh, tour of the world right now. I think she’s in Chicago this week? [00:00:18] Jeff: Yeah, or Rome, or Latvia, or Upper Sandusky. Who’s to say? [00:00:22] Brett: yeah, who knows. Um, That girl gets around. [00:00:25] Brett’s Health Struggles [00:00:25] Brett: So, um, I missed last week. I apologize. I will talk about why in the mental health corner. Um, but Jeff, how are you? [00:00:37] Jeff: doing good. I like how you apologized. The guy’s been on death’s door. Not exactly. But like, sorry everybody, I was passing out and having really one of the worst times health wise of my life. I’m really sorry to all of you that [00:00:49] Brett: Sorry for the inconvenience, everybody. [00:00:52] Jeff: Christina and I, and it was really Christina at the top of the last episode, suggested people call you, uh, like, um, Message you with [00:01:00] unsolicited medical advice. [00:01:00] Did you get any of that? I know you [00:01:02] Brett: So much. Some of it, some of it ended up being really helpful and actually led to discovering what’s going on. [00:01:10] Jeff: And that’s the problem with unsolicited medical advice that no one [00:01:13] Brett: Sometimes. [00:01:14] Jeff: is that there’s usually something hits. [00:01:19] Brett: Um, I, I, yeah, yeah, let’s talk about it. [00:01:24] Discovering Ehlers Danlos Syndrome [00:01:24] Brett: So, um, I have realized, so I had these symptoms, um, new symptoms where I was dizzy all the time, still am, uh, like constant lightheadedness, and then I started just Passing out. [00:01:40] Um, and it was always shortly after an orthostatic change, meaning sitting up or from like lying down or seated. [00:01:49] Jeff: pause, orthostatic change. That’s new for me. Listeners. Is that new for you? [00:01:55] Brett: Yeah. Uh, friend of the show, Harold Kockelmeyer, I [00:02:00] think that’s how you say his last name, um, said he was very disappointed when he learned that orthostatic meant, uh, position changes and not a skeleton that couldn’t move. Um, because he’s very, yeah, he’s, he’s very much a linguist and, and immediately wanted to dissect the term. [00:02:19] Um, we, we love you, I love you. I don’t know about everybody [00:02:23] Jeff: I would probably like you, you’ve got a great name. Both of them. And together especially. [00:02:28] Brett: we might have some mixed feelings. I don’t know. I love him. I love him. He’s a great guy. Um, so anyways, uh, like I, I suddenly started fading. I’ve been to the emergency room three times in the last couple of weeks. Um, one time minor concussion, two times, just like, Hey, what the fuck’s going on? Um, and no results. [00:02:50] All my tests came back negative. Uh, my heart came back negative. My blood pressure came back. Positive, like, uh, like, fine, [00:03:00] everything, all

I got Christina Warren with me. Hi, Christina. [00:00:14] Christina: Hi, Jeff. Um, [00:00:16] Brett’s Health Update [00:00:16] Jeff: you follow Brett on social media, uh, and maybe if you don’t, uh, you will now know that he is having some health issues. Um, and, uh, and we wish him so well. He is not here with us. [00:00:28] Christina: he is not here with us. He’s, he’s with us in spirit. We hope that he’s doing well and that we figure out, hopefully, you know, by the time this episode goes up, he’ll be closer to figuring out why he’s been having some, uh, some fainting spells and some other stuff, which is super, super scary. So, and a fucking terrible week for it. [00:00:45] I mean, it’s a terrible week in general, but like, of all the weeks for like, you know, to have to have like a health crisis on top of everything else. [00:00:52] Jeff: Yeah, it’s like the only week that would also explain that particular health [00:00:55] crisis. I’m not saying It’s I’m definitely [00:00:58] Christina: no, no, Oh, no, [00:01:00] no, no. It doesn’t seem to be, but no, but yeah, totally. It is one of those things. Well, the thing is, if it hadn’t started like before Tuesday, I think that that would have been um, like, if I were the ER doctor, I’d be like, are we sure this isn’t just a stress response? [00:01:16] Jeff: right. Yeah. Are we sure there’s not people across America passing out consistently right now? [00:01:22] No. Uh, feel better, Brett. Uh, and [00:01:26] it just sucks, and hopefully he figures it out, and if you do follow him on social media, send him, send him well wishes, um, and hope that he posts no more photos of himself from the ER. [00:01:36] Christina: Yeah. For real. For real. Um, and, and, and, and, Very sad. Um, and, and if you’re either a doctor or an armchair doctor, please respond to him, um, with, um, suggestions for how you can solve his medical problem without actually knowing what his symptoms and, and situation is, because I know he will love that. [00:01:58] Jeff: That’s a little special request he sent [00:02:00] through us. [00:02:00] Christina: It is. It is. It is. [00:02:01] Jeff: and we, we like to take care of him. [00:02:03] Christina: We, we, we do. Just, just say that, you know, Christina and Jeff wanted to make sure that he doesn’t get any sleep. [00:02:08] Jeff: Yeah, definitely. And

I am here with Jeff Severns Guntzel. Christina is out, but in her stead, we have the fabulous Jay Miller. Uh, you can find him at kjaymiller. com. How’s it going, Jay? [00:00:19] Jeff: It’s good. It’s good. Glad to be back. [00:00:22] Jay: Hi, Jay. [00:00:24] Brett: So, [00:00:25] Jay: I feel like this is four in a row. [00:00:27] Brett: is it really? [00:00:28] Jay: I think so. [00:00:29] Jeff: There’s been a lot. I’ve been excited. I’ve been listening. [00:00:32] Merlin Episodes and Podcasting Dreams [00:00:32] Brett: Thanks to, thanks to Jeff and his fill in Merlin episodes, I [00:00:36] Jay: Yeah, you get who you can. [00:00:38] Jeff: The Merlin sodes have been, have been good. [00:00:42] Jay: That was a, that was a blast talking to Merlin. It was really, really lovely. [00:00:45] Brett: Merlin told us that he would come on anytime, uh, if we could stand him. Um, so yeah, we, there will be more Merlin episodes. Look [00:00:57] Jay: The funny thing about talking to Merlin [00:01:00] one on one is that I’ve been listening. I mean, probably like all of us, maybe listening to Merlin’s podcasts for like 12 years. Um, and there aren’t many other podcasts that I listen to regularly. I would say I listened to one of his podcasts every week. I don’t usually listen to all of them. [00:01:14] Jay: And I used to have this dream that I was on some podcast I loved or another, and I just really, really messed it up. And it was just, I’d wake up feeling like such a failure. And the first time Merlin got on, I was like, Oh, this is that dream where I’m like talking to someone that I’ve only really known through podcasts. [00:01:32] Jay: And it’s got to work. Anyway, it was really nice. It was delightful. [00:01:35] Brett: Someone, someone said, uh, I like it when you have Merlin on because unlike his other podcasts, he hasn’t gotten comfortable enough to just descend into grievances. [00:01:49] Jay: That’s funny. [00:01:50] Mental Health Corner: Jay’s Work Challenges [00:01:50] Brett: All right, should we, uh, should we kick it off with the Mental Health Corner, our longest running, um, uh, segment? [00:01:58] Jay: Yes, [00:01:59] Jeff

This is the second part of a two part conversation with Merlin Mann. Welcome back Merlin. [00:00:11] Merlin: Thank you for having me, Jeff [00:00:12] Jeff: so the Overtired, anybody who listens has noticed there are large gaps between episodes. [00:00:17] Jeff: And in those off weeks, I was thinking I wanted to pick up on a conversation I’d had with Merlin we had started to have when you were on the on the podcast earlier this year about ChatGPT and it was to me a very interesting conversation as opposed to a very stale conversation and I think you and I are sort of kindred spirits and how we use this thing and so originally the idea was hey you guys mind if I just do like a one on one with Merlin about this so we did it. We did a first try at that. And it ended up being such a delightful, um, uh, opportunity to talk about a million things that weren’t ChatGPT that here we [00:00:53] Merlin: Jeff, we got to talk about music and I was very, I was so, well, first of all, I was pleased because I don’t know where anybody sees anything [00:01:00] anymore, but, um, and you know, I was really hoping people would listen to it, but I didn’t want to be like too like meh, go listen to me talk, ramble for a long time. [00:01:08] Merlin: But the people who did discover it and listen to it, uh, a few of them have contacted me and you to say that they enjoyed it. And I just wanted to say to our friends, uh, who especially enjoyed the music, thank you for enjoying that and for saying so. The music, the music talk, because we talked a fair amount about music. [00:01:23] Jeff: Yeah, it was lovely to hear people kind of being excited about that. It was [00:01:27] Merlin: This is my version of World War II, with all respect. Like, I don’t have anybody to talk to about what it’s like, you know, to be in the trenches. Well, you know, the trenches of 1994 [00:01:37] Jeff: Yeah, exactly. That’s all you got. 1994. [00:01:40] Merlin: didn’t watch my friends die face down in the mud so that you could say shit about polvo. [00:01:45] Jeff: There was a great, there’s a great Minneapolis band called More Ram. And this was in the 90s. And it was the singer of this band Hammerhead is a great band on Amphetamine Reptile local band here. But he had a song called She’s My Vietnam.[00:02:00] [00:02:01] Merlin: Um, Trump told Howard Stern one time that venereal disease was his Vietnam. [00:02:05] Jeff: Oh, shucks. Yeah, no. Yeah. [00:02:08] Merlin: guess the Bonespurs didn’t bother him enough for but [00:02:11] Jeff: Oh, oh, [00:02:13] Merlin: Hey everybody, you’re listening to Overtired. It’s an alternate week episode where Jeff talks to Merlin Mann, which is a thing we’re gonna do from now on. [00:02:18] Jeff: sounds great. Sounds great. Um, [00:02:20] Merlin: neck of the woods? [00:00:34] Jeff: I will. I will. Um, yeah. All right. I’m excited to be with you. [00:00:41] Brett: Yeah, we’re all excited. [00:00:43] Jeff: Let’s do this. [00:00:44] Weather and Asheville Crisis Discussion [00:00:44] Jeff: a beautiful, I know, who wants to talk about the weather when you’re not even gonna listen to this the day we recorded it, but it is a beautiful, beautiful day out, and I have not experienced a beautiful, beautiful day, by my standards, in some time. [00:00:57] Brett: It’s like 65 degrees here, [00:01:00] what do you got? [00:01:00] Jeff: Yeah, yeah, same, same up here, up north, up north on the Mississippi. [00:01:04] Brett: Meanwhile, holy shit, have you guys seen videos out of like Asheville? [00:01:08] Christina: I about to say, I was like, of whether it’s awful and like there’s, it sucks. Um, I, I know some people there are kind of in that area and, um, you know, I know that they’re doing their best to get. Uh, aid to the region and all that, but Jesus Christ, like it is just really, really bad. [00:01:30] Brett: I sent multiple hundreds of dollars to a mutual aid fund, uh, that was going directly to people on the ground. [00:01:38] Christina: Yeah, I, I did too. Um, I used, um, what was it? Samaritan’s Purse because I’ve, I’ve heard from people on the ground that they are actually going out there and getting stuff directly to people. Um, so it’s, it’s hard to vet those organizations, but, but it was important for me to find one that’s like, if you can anyway, that’s, you know, 5013C because then you could do employer matching. [00:02:00] So, so [00:02:00] Brett: Oh yeah, I should, I should do that. I should, cause I bet you Oracle has a, [00:02:05] Christina: I’m sure they [00:02:06] Brett: something, cause they have like a whole search engine for like things you can donate to that they’ll match. [00:02:10] Christina: Exactly. It’s probably Benevity. That’s what most of the corporations use, but [00:02:14] Brett: I will, I will double up. I will gladly donate it again. [00:02:18] Christina: Yeah, that’s what I did

S4 Ep 418418: S-Tier Face (Merlin Mann: Part 1)
This is the first of two episodes. The idea was for Merlin and Jeff to discuss how they were using chatGPT in ways that are maybe novel. The thing is, the pre-show banter became in-show banter that barely touched the intended topic, which is awesome because now, thanks to the transcript of this episode, we have fodder for chatGPT experimentation between episodes. I shouldn’t [00:00:33] Jeff: Is that the, is, is that the poetry version of, I like the cut of your jib? [00:00:36] Merlin: It is very much like that. It’s a very, it’s kind of nautical verse. Transcript You Don’t Have the Butts [00:00:00] Introduction and Greetings [00:00:00] [00:00:03] Brett: Hey, you’re listening to Overtired. I am Brett Terpstra. I am here with Christina Warren and Jeff Severins Gunsel. Welcome to the show, guys. [00:00:13] Jeff: Oh, thank you. [00:00:15] Brett: It’s good to have you here. [00:00:17] Christina: It’s good to be [00:00:18] Jeff: be here. [00:00:19] Late Recording and Drinks [00:00:19] Jeff: We don’t normally record at this. It’s, it’s 5 p. m. here. It’s 3 p. m. for Christina, but actually, like, I feel more ready than I usually do. Whereas normally, if I were ending my day, I would feel very dead inside. Um, and so thank you for, uh, for giving me a different kind of ending of my day. [00:00:37] Brett: Why would you feel dead inside at the end of a day? [00:00:40] Jeff: Oh, sometimes it’s just, you’re tired. You go, you know, it’s like, you’re not interacting with people. You’re just ending and then you’re interacting. And so it’s nice. This is like a nice landing. It’s a [00:00:49] Brett: yeah. So [00:00:50] Jeff: One might say happy ending. [00:00:52] Brett: I call that like, vegging out time, which is 100 percent where I’m at right now. Um, I made a too stiff [00:01:00] screwdriver to celebrate our late recording time. Um, I, there is, there is a line where a screwdriver becomes just, there’s just too much vodka, too much vodka. [00:01:12] Christina: It’s true. It’s true. Right. Right. But sometimes, you know, that happens. Like, you just get a little bit too much and you’re like, actually [00:01:19] Brett: Wow, this tastes like grain alcohol all of a sudden. [00:01:22] Christina: Exactly. You’re like, you’re like, I could have had a little more juice with this. Yeah. [00:01:27] Jeff: All right. [00:01:28] Mental Health Corner: Jeff’s Journey [00:01:28] Brett: uh, let’s, let’s kick it off with a contained mental health corner. Um, who wants to go first? Is it going to be me? [00:01:37] Jeff: I can make a, I can do, I have kind of a quick one. I was cleaning out a sort of catch all room in our house in the basement and, um, came across this bag of like, But it was mostly empty prescription pill bottles, but it had like, uh, it was also a little museum with some leftover pills of all of the medications that I’ve [00:02:00] taken over the last few years. [00:02:01] Jeff: And, and, and that includes, you know, a period where I was over medicated, um, a period where we were just trying things. And, um, and, and that was a, those were a hard couple periods and it was, And I’m very much on the other side of that, and so it was like, at first, Almost a little chilling to look at all the medication names again and even to like rattle the bottles because there were still pills in there. [00:02:26] Jeff: I need to get rid of them. I don’t want to [00:02:28] Brett: Why do you save [00:02:29] Jeff: I didn’t save them

S4 Ep 416416: Accidental Meth
Christina, Jeff, and Brett dive into a rollercoaster episode packed with wild travel tales, parenting epiphanies, and tech geekery. Christina shares her whirlwind trip to San Francisco, while Jeff reminisces about meth-centric band auditions. Brett navigates an Accidental Vyvanse Overdose and a transition to VS Code, with plenty of geek love for GitHub extensions and markdown editors. I’m Christina Warren, joined as always by Jeff Severinskenzel and Brett Terpstra. Guys, hello. [00:00:14] Brett: As, as always, sometimes, as sometimes, all three of us are here. [00:00:18] Christina: Well, look, I mean, it’s, it’s, it’s like, let’s just, let’s just focus on the fact that again, like I said, the feed’s been updated. Like we’ve got a new episode out. [00:00:28] Brett: Um, yeah, and I, the plan is to have new episodes for a few weeks in a row here, if we, if we stick to plan. We have sponsors, and It would be more trouble to not do the episode than to do the episode. So yeah. [00:00:46] Christina’s Exhausting Trip [00:00:46] Brett: Christina, how are you? [00:00:48] Christina: Pretty good. Pretty good. Um, I, um, had kind of, I, well, I mean, I’m, I’m fine now. I slept a lot, which was good, but yesterday, which was, we’re recording this on a Saturday. Um, I, on [00:01:00] a Friday, which was our normal record date, I would have been a lot more tired if we recorded then because I was in, um, San Francisco as an in and out, like on Thursday, like I flew in, uh, in the morning and then flew out in the afternoon. [00:01:15] Christina: And, um, I don’t know, uh, be, like spending more time in airports than you spend in the city that you’re visiting [00:01:21] Jeff: That’s the worst. [00:01:22] Christina: That kind of sucks, to be honest. So [00:01:24] Jeff: sucks. [00:01:25] Christina: it was a great trip and I’m really glad that I did it and it wasn’t like that bad, but it’s also one of those things where it’s like, it’s just a not a long enough flight for the whole thing to just be like, okay, in the future, if I can, I mean, in their instance, this was one of them were like, you have to do that. [00:01:41] Christina: And, and I’m, I’m glad that I was at least close enough to do it, but you’re also kind of like, yeah, this, this sucks. Like I’m now more tired than I would have been if I had just, you know, gone someplace and stayed the night and flown back. [00:01:53] Jeff: Right, right. I know I hate that. I hate that, uh, I’m always wrong when I make the calls. [00:02:00] I don’t like traveling anymore, though, is my problem. That much. I like traveling, uh, on a vacation. I do not like traveling for work anymore. [00:02:09] Travel and Mental Health [00:02:09] Brett: Which I think is a great segue into a mental health corner. [00:02:12] Christina: Yeah, I think so. [00:02:14] Brett: travel and mental health. I um, tomorrow, or Monday I leave as this podcast is released. [00:02:22] Brett’s Upcoming Vegas Trip [00:02:22]

You know, can’t hide the truth. [00:00:44] Brett: So, how did you get COVID? [00:00:46] Jeff: I don’t know. Transmission, uh, [00:00:49] Brett: Aerosols. [00:00:51] Jeff: aerosols, who knows? My groceries. Probably it was my groceries. I stopped wiping them off and I knew I shouldn’t stop wiping ’em off. Um, I [00:01:00] don’t know. I was traveling. [00:01:01] Jeff: I don’t know. [00:01:33] Masking and Public Perception [00:01:33] Brett: And, and we’ve kind of, we’ve stopped taking precautions. Like even liberals have mostly stopped wearing masks except for people who are immunocompromised and are mad at everyone else for not wearing masks. But, um, yeah, it’s kind of, I don’t, I get it. I don’t want to wear a mask anymore. [00:01:56] Brett: Like I want it to just be over, but it’s really not. [00:01:59] Jeff: I, [00:02:00] for me, when I put them on, like, I, um, it just triggers so many fucking bad memories. And, and so I, I, as soon as I feel the heat of my breath in a mask, I’m just like, God damn it. I mean, I was a masked person to the end and, and M, I mean, I masked, I had to go one place and it was a big box store. I mean, it was better than a big box store. It’s Jeff Severance Gunsel, Christina Warren, and myself, Brett Terpstra. Uh, how are you guys? [00:00:16] Christina: Not too bad. Go on, go on, Jeff. Yeah, exactly. I was gonna say pretty birth I was gonna say happy birthday. I was like, not as good as you, birthday boy, but you know, [00:00:24] Brett: I’m 46 today [00:00:26] Jeff: Forty six. [00:00:28] Brett: I’m not lying about my age like some people do. Um, [00:00:33] Christina: It might be, it might be your birthday, but I’ll still tell you to fuck off. I can lie about my age as long as I want. [00:00:37] Brett: I wasn’t singling you out. I just said some people. [00:00:41] Jeff: Some people. [00:00:43] Christina: Some [00:00:43] Gifts and Subscriptions [00:00:43] Brett: Um, yeah, I, uh, I’ve had a really good birthday. Elle, Elle knows how much I love getting gifts and I’m too old for most people to give me so they take it upon themselves to shower me. With gifts every year. [00:01:00] Um, and this year they got me a bunch of cool stuff, including a subscription to Cooks Illustrated and, uh, the book Vegetables Illustrated from Cooks Illustrated, which I’m very excited. [00:01:11] Jeff: Print subscription? What a beautiful is this still beautiful? It’s been a long time. I don’t know if it got eaten by okay, [00:01:17] Brett: I was picking them up at the co-op and just like, well actually, uh, one of the, one of the families that EL was house sitting for had them laying out. And I had forgotten how much I loved that magazine. Even like, even as a pescatarian who can’t eat half the recipes in there, they’re still so beautifully illustrated and beautifully written. [00:01:39] Brett: And it’s just, it’s a fun read. It’s food, it’s food porn. [00:01:43] Jeff: in an era yeah, but with line art. But in a in an era of like, um, the horrible, awful, terrible, evil, fascist food blog, where it’s like, let me just push all this shit away to get to a very simple recipe. [00:01:59] Brett: [00:02:00] huh. [00:02:00] Jeff: How amazing that all of the extra verbiage in Cook’s Illustrated is just towards you learning. [00:02:07] Jeff: Uh, I think it’s amazing. It was like in the day, maybe it sounds like it’s the same, it was like McSweeney’s level design attention, but like even beyond that somehow. Yeah. That’s awesome. [00:02:18] Brett: That’s exciting. Um, yeah, she also got me the book

Transcript Politics, Money, and Tacos [00:00:00] Introduction and Jeff’s Absence [00:00:00] [00:00:03] Brett: Welcome back to Overtired, couple weeks off, uh, it’s gonna be a little sporadic through the summer, but, uh, I’m Bret Terpstra, I am here with Christina Warren, Jeff is out this week, right before we recorded, he tweaked his back and now he is laying down and does not want to podcast laying down, uh, I guess, I get that. [00:00:26] Brett: Um, Christina, how are you? [00:00:29] Christina: I’m good. I’m good. I’m, I’m very, I, I feel for Jeff. Cause like, I know like back pain is like one of the worst things ever. So, um, and, and you know that, um, very well too. So, um, I, I’m, I’m, I’m, I’m fine, but I’m, I am, uh, worried about our comrade. [00:00:46] Discussing Back Pain and Sciatica [00:00:46] Brett: Have you ever had sciatica? [00:00:49] Christina: yes, I have, but usually what I get, um, cause I have, I have scoliosis, so my back pain is usually different, but I have had sciatica before. Not often though. [00:00:58] Brett: Yeah, I have [00:01:00] minor scoliosis. I always hated those checks in gym class. But, um, yes, sciatica wrecked me for like two weeks the first time I had it. Um, and I thought it was just lower back pain, but it’s actually in my, in your like upper thigh. Um, and the solution was massage. I went to like a sports therapist who massaged And it took 15 minutes and she basically fixed my sciatica with like a deep tissue massage. [00:01:33] Brett: But that’s, that’s, that’s irrelevant because that’s probably not what Jeff did in his paddle boat, uh, over the weekend. Um, happy 4th of July. I guess, happy treason day. [00:01:47] Christina: God, I don’t even know, man. Like I, I’m so, okay. [00:01:52] Political Anxiety and Mental Health [00:01:52] Christina: So we’re not even getting into the mental health corner yet, and this isn’t even really a mental health corner thing, but it’s kind of a, [00:02:00] except it kind of is. So I feel kind of like an asshole for saying this, but at the same time, this is genuinely like a protective thing that I need to do, like for my mental health and for other things. [00:02:12] Christina: But I, I can’t be bothered to be upset or care or get too like mad about this election that Biden is absolutely going to lose. Like, I’m, I’m so, I’m, I’m, I’m so upset by the prospect of another four years of Trump, don’t get me wrong, but like, I just don’t have the energy to either, to, to be engaged, outraged, or like, even like, I don’t even want to think about it. [00:02:40] Christina: You know what I mean? Right. [00:02:41] Brett: Yeah, I do. I know exactly what you mean. Um, like I hav

Jeff is out this week, but filling in, we have Jay Miller. Welcome to the show, Jay. [00:00:15] Jay: What’s up? It’s always good to be here. Also, sorry if I sound not like me. I’ve been, I’ve been conferencing a lot lately. So, [00:00:24] Christina: The voice, the voice goes out a little [00:00:25] Brett: good. You sound good. [00:00:27] Jay: the voice is always low. [00:00:29] Christina’s California Adventures [00:00:29] Brett: And Christina just got back from California. [00:00:32] Christina: I did. I did. And I’ll be back in California in a week. [00:00:37] Brett: That’s a lot of California. [00:00:38] Jay: That sounds like my July. [00:00:41] Christina: Yeah. Yeah. Um, this, this was not like an intended thing. Like, Christina thought that she was going to be in California. Last week, and then was asked to, well, thought that the ask was to be in California for maybe a day or two next week. [00:00:56] Christina: Turns out, no, I misinterpreted some things, or maybe some things are [00:01:00] misinterpreted to me. Regardless, I’ll be in San Francisco the week of the 24th through the 28th, so [00:01:07] Brett: started that in the third person and finished in the first person. That was a, [00:01:11] Jay: I love it. [00:01:12] Brett: that was a cool transition. [00:01:14] Jay: I, um, I made the, the concerted commitment with the job that I’m at to not travel a lot. And then after. [00:01:21] Travel Plans and Pet Dilemmas [00:01:21] Jay: Uh, my wife and my daughter are planning a month long trip, um, also to California and I’m staying home to do work. It was like, well, I could probably travel a little bit more. So the, the week of like July 8th, I’m going from New York, from New York to Toronto. [00:01:43] Jay: I’m back home for two days, then I fly back to New York, and then I’m there for another four more days. I get back, I’m back for a week, and then I fly to London for the Relay event. And I was just like, I did not realize how stupid I was in all of my [00:02:00] bookings. [00:02:00] Christina: right, right. Yeah, it totally, if you thought about that more, like, you probably would not have, like, gone back and forth between, like, Toronto and and home just to come back to New York, [00:02:11] Jay: Well, it’s like I have to, I would have to pay And like, our, our company was like, we’ll pay for the event plus a day before and after. So I was like, okay,

Hopefully you already know that because you clicked to listen and it’s not on some sort of like autoplay situation, but if it is, hi, surprise, it’s me, I’m Jeff. Uh, I’m here with, with Christina Warren and I’m here with Brett Terpstra and I also have a lot of birds outside my window and I refuse to take measures To block them out, because I think we all, we all need it. [00:00:31] Jeff: I’m coming with the birds. I [00:00:33] Brett: not hearing any birds, [00:00:34] Jeff: Oh, damn. I hear him through my microphone. It’s lovely. [00:00:37] Brett: that, you got that very directional mic, I uh, I [00:00:41] Mosquitoes and Immunity [00:00:41] Jeff: Can you hear the, can you hear the mosquitoes? Cause holy shit. Uh, anyway, yeah, really bad up here. I don’t know why, [00:00:47] Brett: Yeah, it’s not bad. I live in the same state as Jeff, uh, in far, like two hours south of Jeff. And I gotta say, like, I was just thinking yesterday, there are surprisingly few mosquitoes here.[00:01:00] [00:01:00] Brett: They all went north. [00:01:01] Jeff: Brett Terpstra lives in amazing, in a region that has the best name ever. I think you live in the Driftless region, right? And, and isn’t the Driftless region known for a lack of mosquitoes? [00:01:12] Brett: I actually don’t know if that’s true or false. [00:01:15] Jeff: mostly just known [00:01:16] Brett: neither confirm nor deny. [00:01:18] Jeff: Okay, fine. Fine. [00:01:20] Brett: So, uh, there, the weird thing is there was a period of about five years where I was immune to mosquitoes. I would, I would be at like a, an outdoor gathering and everyone would be complaining about mosquitoes and zero of them would even land on me. [00:01:37] Brett: And if they did, they wouldn’t bite. [00:01:39] Jeff: Okay, I’m gonna make [00:01:40] Brett: I was just impervious, [00:01:42] Jeff: gonna make light of something that I am against making light of, but I have a feeling in this friendship in this podcast that’ll work. Was it because you were sweating heroin? [00:01:49] Brett: no. No, I’m not I can’t rem there was something going on in my life. There was, like, I was eating something regularly, and I can’t remember what I [00:02:00] decided the, the, the X factor was on that. Um, it was during a period of sobriety. It was neither alcohol nor heroin. [00:02:10] Jeff: it was because of whatever you were detoxing. [00:02:12] Brett: Yeah, maybe, who knows. It, it ended though. I get mosquito bites now. [00:02:17] Jeff: Wait, hold on. What if DEET is short for detox? [00:02:22] Brett: I think it’s short for delirium tremors. Delir yeah, [00:02:27] Jeff: All right. [00:02:28] Christina: I’m sorry that you lost your mosquito immunity because I, I definitely, uh, I’m very allergic to so many bugs and, and, um, also pollen and also like the sun and, uh, like every type of like tree and grass blade and whatnot, but mosquitoes.

I am here with Christina Warren. Christina, how [00:00:14] Brett: are you? [00:00:14] Christina: I’m pretty good. I’m tired because, and I’m, and I’m just getting started this weekend. It’s going to be so, so busy, but no, I’m tired because I’ve, I’ve had kind of like a crazy last week or so. And it’s, it’s, it’s just going to get busier. I’m, I’m, I’m good. How about you? Uh, [00:00:31] Brett: Um, I also am tired. Um, I had, I ran out of My sleep meds one night and then I got them and slept really well the next night. And then last night, even with the sleep meds, uh, after 2 a. m. I was up like every half an hour. So I’m dragging and I also had a crazy work week. Um, crazy for me, probably not as crazy as yours, but [00:00:57] Mental Health Corner [00:00:57] Brett: I, uh, I did this [00:01:00] project before I left on vacation. [00:01:01] Brett: I went, I went to Asheville. I don’t, we haven’t talked since then, but have we? Um, I, uh, I, I worked really hard to get two projects in the can before I left on vacation and then made the mistake of checking Slack while on vacation and. and found out that both of the projects I had completed required revisions for asinine reasons um that I started to argue in slack halfway through my vacation and then I was like dude you’re totally harshing my buzz here so I’m just gonna I’ll talk to you when I get home. [00:01:42] Brett: Um, and then I saw Victor and Victor kind of talked me down and, and I got back and like, it was no big deal, but then yesterday I get this frantic Slack message from someone I had never heard of who wanted to know who [00:02:00] greenlit the. Demo video that I published because that entire project apparently was confidential and like I worked directly with the team and the team didn’t know their project was confidential. [00:02:15] Brett: They were as shocked as I was so there is some kind of failure of communication [00:02:19] Brett: here. [00:02:19] Christina: And a failure I should add that is in no way yours. [00:02:22] Brett: Huh, I just followed [00:02:23] Brett: orders. They [00:02:24] Christina: what I’m saying. That’s what I’m saying. You had, you, you had zero. [00:02:29] Brett: So I got, I got together all the stakeholders. I said, you guys sort this out. It’s Friday afternoon. I’m out. Have fun. [00:02:37] Christina: Yeah, no, sounds fair, sounds fair. Um, we’ll, we’ll, we’ll talk more in depth, um, uh, off mic, but, um, I’m actually going to be talking to a couple of Oracle people at, uh, Microsoft Build, but I don’t know if you know any of them or not, but [00:02:53] Brett: We’ll, we’ll think

S4 Ep 408408: I Hate This City

In this episode, the hosts catch up after a few weeks apart and discuss the possibility of starting a Patreon for their podcast. They also share personal updates and experiences, including losing and finding wallets, dealing with frustrations, and contemplating living in a city they dislike. The conversation takes a humorous turn as they compare themselves to characters from The Muppet Caper and discuss their preferences for jail cell companions. The conversation covers various topics, including the Muppets, space exploration, and anarchism. The hosts discuss which Muppet characters would be best suited for a jailbreak, with Kermit and Fozzie being the top contenders. They also delve into the complexities of Kermit and Miss Piggy’s relationship. The conversation then shifts to the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the flaws in the US space program. They express their preference for funding projects like the James Webb telescope over returning to the moon. The hosts also touch on the concept of anarchy and its potential benefits if people had high morals. The conversation concludes with a discussion about Taylor Swift and the media’s coverage of her. In this part of the conversation, Christina Warren discusses Taylor Swift’s new album and her personal interpretation of the songs. She highlights the anger and unhinged nature of the lyrics, as well as the transparency in Taylor’s storytelling. The conversation also touches on the idea of therapy and how Taylor’s music serves as a form of therapy for her. Brett then shares information about his project called Conductor, which allows users to customize the processing of Markdown files based on specific criteria. In this part of the conversation, Christina Warren discusses the limitations of the Twitter API and wonders if there is a way to automate certain actions, such as launching a browser window in the background to send tweets. Brett and Jeff discuss the challenges of automating actions on platforms like Twitter and Facebook, and the limited access to their APIs. They also talk about other tools and APIs, such as Textra for OCR and transcription, and Texts for managing messages from various platforms. I live in the fifth dimension. [00:00:33] Jeff: Okay, that’s fine. That’s fine. Um, mute him. [00:00:43] Brett: That’s rude. [00:00:44] Jeff: I was just kidding. [00:00:46] Brett: Rude. [00:00:47] Diving Into Mental Health and Podcast Sustainability [00:00:47] Brett: Um, so should we start with a, a brief, a contained mental health corner? [00:00:55] Christina: Yeah, it’s been a while. I’d love to like hear from everybody, see how everybody’s doing. Cause um, [00:01:00] uh, just, uh, we’ve all had stuff going on. Um, and also the podcast market is kind of trash right now, but mostly we’ve all had stuff going on. So we haven’t talked to one another in a while. I would [00:01:11] Exploring Patreon and Merch Ideas [00:01:11] Brett: really, we should test the waters with a Patreon and just see if our listeners want to support the show. Transcript Bad Apple [00:00:00] [00:00:04] Brett: Welcome back to Overtired, which has become once again, a, um, kind of sporadic, uh, release schedule, but that’s just, it’s spring break. We’ll be back into the swing of things, uh, shortly. In the meantime, um, we’ll, we’ll just keep putting out kind of random episodes. I kind of wanted to put one out. Oh, hi, by the way, I’m, I’m Brett Terpstra. [00:00:26] Brett: I’m here with Christina Warren. Um, I kind of wanted to release an episode last week that had an intro and then was just a rickroll, um, and like play the entire song and then, and then just like play the outro music. Um, but I didn’t, because that was probably, there were probably copyright issues with that. [00:00:47] Christina: Eh, [00:00:49] Brett: I could probably get away with a 30 second snippet though. [00:00:52] April Fools Day Fun [00:00:52] Christina: yeah, probably. I saw one good Okay, so April Fool’s Day was What day was that? Was that like, Monday? [00:00:59] Brett: It [00:01:00] was on April 1st. [00:01:01] Christina: Well, no, it was last Friday. No, I know, but I was trying to think where we are like, like, like day wise, like I was trying to think of what day was it this week? And it was Monday. So we’re recording this on Saturday. [00:01:12] Christina: So it was Monday. So I was trying to figure out when it was. Um, and April Fool’s Day as, as you know, the internet has ruined it. I think we’ve talked about that before. I feel very complicit about my own role. Um, in ruining the day because of, of my time as a blogger, um, especially at Mashable during like the height of brands being extremely online and terrible. [00:01:36] Christina: But there was one good, well, there were a couple of, of good ones that I saw. Um, I think, uh, I don’t remember what the, the second one was, maybe it’ll come to me, but the one that actually got me to laugh was, um, somebody, um, Uh, and I knew exactly what it was before I saw it and I saw Mr. Macintosh, uh, tweet it and it was somebody who was like, hey, I got a way [00:02:00] of getting, you know, full, you know, modern, um, Mac OS, um, running on old power PC Macs, you know, click here for more. [00:02:08] Christina: And I knew it was like, Oh, and then you click on the thing. It was like, Oh, you know, click, click, click on this link, you know, to get more information or whatever. And I was like, Oh, I know exactly what this is. Before I even saw the YouTube tool tip, before I even saw that, I like, I knew exactly what I was setting myself up for and I still sent it to someone. [00:02:23] Christina: Um, and, um, and it was one of those things where I was just like, yep. Okay. This, I was like, you get one, you get one Rick roll of an April Fool’s day. And this is, this is a good one. Cause like, that’s, that’s it. [00:02:34] Brett: I saw a meme that said, Happy April Fool’s Day, the one day of the year when people critically assess information on the internet before accepting it as true. [00:02:45] Christina: is very true. And it’s also like very awful that it’s like, we acknowledge, it’s like everybody’s a fucking expert on April Fool’s Day. Um. And, and then, yeah. [00:02:57] Brett: What was your favorite April Fool’s [00:03:00] prank as a kid? [00:03:05] Christina: I don’t even, I don’t even know. I, I used to buy like, um, stuff from, from, from Spencer’s. Um, there would be like, joke stuff. And I’m trying to think like, what I had. I think I might have had like, fake vomit or something. [00:03:18] Brett: Do you remember back when sinks, kitchen sinks used to have like a spray nozzle that you could pull out on like a hose to like spray your dishes down back before, like everything was just part of the faucet. I used to, my favorite prank was to rubber band the lever on that. So when you turn on the sink, it sprays you right in the chest. [00:03:41] Brett: Um, that was my go to April Fool’s prank that does not work anymore because nobody has faucets like that anymo

We are back. Couple weeks off. I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here with Jeff Severins Gunsel and Christina Warren and special guest Erin Dawson. Welcome to the show, everybody. [00:00:22] Jeff: WelcomeErinon. [00:00:25] Erin: Thank you, [00:00:25] Christina: Erin. [00:00:26] Erin: Thank you, Christina. Thank you, Brett. [00:00:29] Jeff: I just want to thank everybody. [00:00:31] Brett: Erin, introduce yourself. [00:00:32] Erin: have something to say about hymns first. [00:00:35] Jeff: Hmm. [00:00:36] Erin: Um, I think I know what hymns is. And do they also work for, like, lady boners? [00:00:45] Brett: Well, it depends on the type of lady, I guess. [00:00:48] Erin: Right, well, ladies that could nominally achieve, like, how’s that work? [00:00:54] Brett: That’s a, that’s a, it’s a fair question. Uh, we may have to contact their ad department to [00:01:00] find out how they want to spin that. [00:01:01] Erin: What we may also have to do is start this episode over. I’m so sorry. I probably [00:01:08] Jeff: Whoa, Brett, no, we don’t have to start over, but Brett, did you just play the intro bit? [00:01:12] Brett: no. That was, it’s the same voice. Um, my, my website just generated because the current giveaway ended at noon. So it generated the like this, this giveaway is over post and every time it finishes generating, and this happens to me on conference calls all the time, it, it says in Zarbox voice, bam, generated. [00:01:38] Jeff: Wow, that’s cool. I like it. [00:01:41] Brett: I love, I love Zarbox. Anyway, Erin, Erin. [00:01:44] Brett: Aaron, [00:01:44] Erin: let’s make this about me. Um, hello, my name is Erin Dawson. Full disclosure, I work with one Brett Terpstra. Um, that is what I do for a living, which is to work with Brett. Um, but [00:01:57] Brett: so than you used to. We’ve kind of moved to different [00:02:00] teams, but yeah. [00:02:01] Tales from the tour [00:02:01] Erin: I hate that. Uh, but in my real life, my waking life, my sober ish life, I am a musician, um, and more specifically a black metal musician, uh, with a project called Genital Shame for which I just got back, um, from a tour a couple weeks ago. [00:02:21] Erin: Uh, started in Chicago, played my hometown Pittsburgh, went to Montreal. Baltimore, Brooklyn, Boston, and ended in Cincinnati. And really, like, it was kind of uneventful. Usually with tours like this, you’re spending six hours on average a day in a van with, you know, boys with, you know, may or may not have Stomach issues. [00:02:49] Erin: So that, [00:02:50] Jeff: good smells. [00:02:51] Erin: that could be a, yeah, uh, an atmosphere creates in the van where you look up and you can start to see cloud formation. [00:03:00] Um, but I’m happy to say like, by the end of it, like I want to spend more time with these people. Uh, my backing band is a band in its own right called Stander from Chicago. But when we we’re on the same label, um, so when we tour, uh, they’re my backing band, but, um, yeah. [00:03:17] Erin: Highlights include playing Brooklyn. We played St. Vitus, this I don’t know if you’re familiar. [00:03:23] Jeff: Vitus. [00:03:24] Erin: Yeah, it’s it’s, uh, I don’t know if you’re familiar, uh, Christina, but it’s it’s sort of a, like, metal institution in in Brooklyn. And, like, two days after Genital Shame played, they were shut down. Uh, hopefully temporarily, they still are for noise ordinance stuff. [00:03:41] Christina: Damn. Okay. And like, what part of [00:03:43] Erin: right under the [00:03:45] Christina: What

I’m here with, Jeff Severance Gunsel and Christina Warren. welcome back. It’s been a couple weeks. [00:00:18] Jeff: Thank you. Hi, everybody. [00:00:20] Brett: So we’ve been starting with Grappitude and I gotta say, like, So, starting with Graptitude has meant that for the last two episodes we haven’t had the Mental Health Corner. And, and honestly, without the Mental Health Corner, I don’t want to do this show anymore. [00:00:37] Jeff: Yeah, I think where we landed, I don’t know if this was a complete chat in our in our thread, but I think where we landed was to switch it back, but just to somehow [00:00:45] Brett: To [00:00:46] Jeff: police ourselves. [00:00:47] Brett: yeah, [00:00:48] Christina: exactly. We’re gonna, we’re gonna [00:00:49] Brett: don’t, we don’t need 45 minutes for, for a mental health coroner. We, we can keep that, we can keep it down to five minutes per person, plus a little chat, and get us [00:01:00] down to like, no more than half the [00:01:01] Jeff: we barely even get to Taylor Swift [00:01:03] Brett: Right, I know, it’s, [00:01:05] Jeff: But the whole world kind of overtook us, really. [00:01:08] Christina: Honestly, they did and now it’s like not even funny to be like, oh, this is a Taylor Swift podcast because people are like, oh. Oh, really? Another one? And I’m like, [00:01:15] Jeff: You think it’s good SEO? [00:01:17] Christina: right. And, and, and it’s like, like trying to explain to people, it’s like, no, it’s actually not. That’s sort of the joke. [00:01:22] Christina: Uh, [00:01:22] Jeff: I tried to get us to change it to Kat Williams, but go ahead. Sorry, Christina. [00:01:26] TikTok and Who TF Did I Marry [00:01:26] Christina: no, I mean, look, honestly, Oh, okay. Have you guys seen, if we were going to switch it to something, if we were going to have a new hyperfixation, would it, it would be the, who the fuck should I marry TikTok lady? [00:01:36] Brett: Haven’t [00:01:36] Jeff: is that? I don’t know. [00:01:39] Christina: I’m going to have to explain this to you. Um, we can do it after mental health corner. Yeah. [00:01:42] Jeff: because of your understandable, exasperated, Oh my God. I have completely fucked my TikTok algorithm, which with like the people who do live feeds from oil rigs and the like, there’s some guys, there’s some guys who are just cutting up lumber. Uh, every night live, uh, as that, [00:02:00] and now baby monkeys. [00:02:01] Jeff: That’s my TikTok. So, [00:02:02] Brett: this, was this because of intentional decisions? How’d [00:02:05] Jeff: oh, hell yeah. I’ve got, I love TikTok and I love how I can just be like, you know what, right now I’m really into oil rigs and, and lumber mills, and then sometimes I’m just into Cat Williams and, uh, and let’s see, like talking dogs, like, and you know what, I don’t mind TikTok knows me. Okay. Sorry. I’ll stop there. [00:02:22] Jeff: But Christina, can you tell me now what this is? Cause I’m always looking [00:02:26] Christina: Yeah, so, so this is, uh, I’ll be very brief on this, but, um, we’ll have a link in the show notes to a Rolling Stone thing, because this is the first thing I found SEO wise that looked somewhat decent. There are full, if you want to watch the whole thing, you can watch it on her TikTok, but people have also uploaded although She should have, so she can get some of the YouTube views, um, and that way you can play it on full time, uh, like, like, like 2x speed. [00:00:08] Jeff: Hello everybody, welcome to what might be, and I’m not going to explain, might be a kind of a weird episode of Overtired, but doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter. Why are you asking so many questions? Um, this is Jeff, uh, Severance Gunsel, one of your three hosts. Uh, I’m here with Christina Warren. Hi, Christina. [00:00:25] Christina: Hello, hello. [00:00:26] Jeff: And Brett, what are you eating in the microphone? [00:00:28] Brett: I have a popsicle. [00:00:31] Christina: They’re homemade, huh? [00:00:32] Brett: Yeah. [00:00:32] Jeff: they homemade? What’s the, what’s the, what’s the flavor? [00:00:35] Brett: This is like lemon echinacea. [00:00:39] Jeff: Nice. [00:00:40] Brett: weird organic juices, that’s what I get, and I make them into popsicles, and I eat them when I’m drunk. [00:00:47] Jeff: Oh, that’s all right. That’s got nothing to do with anything. Um, you know, I started that with what’s the flavor, which reminded me, have you ever had a long term situation where you would clearly, um, have the phone number that’s [00:01:00] being given out by a drug dealer? Um, which has happened to me. Uh, and for a glorious two years, I would get these calls and they’d be something like, here’s three of my favorites. [00:01:10] Jeff: Okay. One was, I answer the phone. Hey, what’s the flavor? That’s it, right? The next one is, uh, Hey, you still at Taco Bell? Right? It’s looking beautiful. And then my favorite was Christmas Eve. And it was just a text that said, I see you over there, Negro. [00:01:26] Brett: I cannot relate to this at all. What, [00:01:29] Jeff: And I wrote back and I was like, I just, I can’t really, it’s hard for me to explain, but I know You have the wrong person. [00:01:36] Brett: how did you end up with these numbers? [00:01:38] Jeff: don’t know if it was a number that was just too close to a, uh, what is clearly a drug dealer’s number, because it wasn’t just that. There was a lot more of like, what’s the flavor? [00:01:45] Jeff: Like, like a lot more checking in on Fridays, like. [00:01:48] Christina: Somebody gave the wrong number [00:01:49] Jeff: Somebody gave their own number out, it got passed around, you know, call this guy and ask what’s the flavor, you know, and I loved it, loved it, and, uh, and I missed those calls, I wish I could figure [00:02:00] out, I blocked everybody because you’d keep getting calls, my block list is just epic, in fact, I could probably give my block list to the Minneapolis Police Department and, uh, get some sort of reward, but I wouldn’t do that. [00:02:10] Brett: What, what drug is it they would ask what, what’s the flavor? [00:02:15] Jeff: I don’t know, maybe it was just like, what’s going on tonight? It’s also possible this was just a guy that, like, maybe this was a guy who made promises. And he knew he couldn’t keep them, and so he gave out the number. But it wasn’t just men, or just women, right? Like, it was a, it was an interesting mix. And it was mostly calls, and not texts, which is, I think, data. [00:02:33] Jeff: But I don’t really know what to make of it. I just miss them. I miss my community. [00:02:37] Brett: I have had, I’ve had a lot of drug dealers phone numbers in my life, and my [00:02:44] Jeff: still in your phone? [00:02:45] Brett: No. My texts to them have been mostly about, like, where you at? Uh, you coming? [00:02:53] Jeff: You still a Taco Bell? [00:02:54] Brett: I can’t imagine what the, what the answer to what flavor[00:03:00] [00:03:00] Jeff: What’s the flavor? No, I mean, that’s just a thing to say, t

[00:01:01] Jeff: I don’t, I, here’s why I, I love my hair, because it sounds like a fucking weird thing to say, but, um, I haven’t had to put a comb through it. Since, like, I don’t know what, because at some point I landed on the, like, Mad Professor hair, and, and I don’t have to maintain it, but I kinda, I like a little swoosh. [00:01:19] Jeff: There’s a lot about, about me I don’t love, but I like my hair. [00:01:23] Brett: both have a bit of a Don King thing going on. [00:01:26] Jeff: Oh, yeah! [00:01:28] Bryan: yeah, this is all hiding behind the, the, [00:01:29] Jeff: Well, yeah, Bryan just made it Don King. [00:01:32] Brett: who is actually black can pull it off [00:01:34] Jeff: Bryan, who is actually becoming Don King before us right now, I wish you could see it. [00:01:38] Christina: Yeah, I was gonna say, you, this, this is very much, um, who, who played Don King in the HBO movie? Cause like, you’re totally giving like those vibes right now. [00:01:47] Jeff: Who did [00:01:47] Brett: idea There was an HBO movie? Was it Idris Elba? I’m just kidding. Of [00:01:53] Jeff: Did anybody else I’m gonna be such a [00:01:56] Bryan: In, in the HBO, in the NDH, not in Ali, [00:02:00] then [00:02:01] Christina: No, it was Don King only in America. It was a 1997 film developed, uh, uh, directed by John Herzfeld and written by Cario Salem. Um, [00:02:08] Bryan: Ving Rames. [00:02:09] Christina: yeah, fuck yeah. That was actually who I thought it was. No. Okay. But, but I’m sorry. That’s who I thought it was. And I was like, I’m going to say that and I’m going to be wrong. [00:02:18] Brett: heh. [00:02:18] Bryan: that’s so awesome. [00:02:20] Christina: good, good job. [00:02:21] Bryan: to watch that, I love Ving Rhames. [00:02:23] Christina: He’s the best baby boy. Uh, RIP, John Singleton. But like, genuinely like that film like gets slept on and that’s like one of like the best films. [00:02:31] Jeff: Love John Singleton. Transcript Emotional Sweep with Merlin Man [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, you’re listening to Overtired. I’m Brett Terpstra. I’m here, as usual, with Christina Warren and Jeff Severance Gunsel. We have a special guest this week. I’d like to welcome Merlin Mann. How’s it going, Merlin? [00:00:20] Merlin: It’s going great. Hi team. [00:00:22] Brett: Hey, um, so we, we’ve been, [00:00:26] Merlin: That’s not really abrupt. I’m trying to be efficient because we had a really nice conversation for 15 minutes before, and I have to act like we’re just starting. Hey, hey you guys, how’s it going? I’m [00:00:35] Brett: we just talked for 20 minutes before the show, um, and we’re gonna try to capture some of that magic again. Um, uh, [00:00:43] Merlin: in a way that’s really organic and nobody will [00:00:45] Christina: Yeah, you’ll totally feel it. It won’t, it won’t, won’t be like recreating stuff. I don’t know. I’m [00:00:50] Jeff: You’re gonna love this, everybody. [00:00:51] Brett: we got Merlin to open Chrome today. [00:00:54] Christina: Hell yeah. [00:00:56] Merlin: Yeah. I think I just got some new credit [00:01:00] cards or something. I’m not sure. I, a lot, I opened Chrome [00:01:04] Jeff: That’s on us. [00:01:05] Christina: ARC. [00:01:06] Merlin: I [00:01:06] Brett: Yeah, [00:01:07] Merlin: think it took a photo of my balls. Um, I’m not sure. [00:01:11] Jeff: We meant to take that out [00:01:13] On Podcasting with Video [00:01:13] Brett: you’re on video, which is probably rare for you when you’re recording a podcast. [00:01:18] Merlin: I’m going to tell you something. I used to be on a podcast a long time ago, and it was a pretty well known, like popular podcast. And at one point they stopped doing just straight up Skype and started going to doing like video, but for an audio product. And I just think that if you have video on, I get it. [00:01:35] Merlin: But if you don’t release that as video. There’s a huge component of it that people are missing. And like, and it’s not, so like, that’s okay. But then the problem is you, you get so used to it that you start saying things that’ll, we’re doing things like some of the faces I’m making and like, I can partner Jeff while we’re here. [00:01:53] Merlin: And like that kind of stuff, which will not go through the listener. And I think that makes a, can make a less good show, but this show I feel very [00:02:00] strongly about. This is, I’m happy to be on video at 10, 20 AM on a Saturday morning. Because I obviously, I was able to get to my stylist and pick my fourth favorite Roderick on the Line shirt, so. [00:02:13] Christina: Yeah. I also got to a stylist. Uh, the joke here, uh, listeners is I’m just wearing like a, a North Face like beanie and, um, uh, a [00:02:22] Merlin: that, it’s from that, uh, that, that Italian stylist. I think her name is, uh, Ilaria Hatt, I think. [00:02:28] Jeff: Oh, man. [00:02:32] Brett: I tried to convince these guys to record video and put out like a YouTube version of the show and it has not gone over well. They’re both shaking their heads right now. Um, [00:02:42] Merlin: think as long as you understand it’s a different thing, it’s good. Like with You Look Nice Today, we did video and I thought it turned out pretty good considering it was the lockdown and, but like, as long as you understand the parameters, a phrase I use that I won’t go into, but in the world of podcasts, I call it the little world. [00:02:57] Merlin: Each podcast I love tends to have a little world. [00:03:00] It’s got voices that I like in it. It’s got bits. It’s got stuff. I, yeah, I yell at it. I like, I yell it. I yell at the guys on Accidental Tech. Podcast all the time. ’cause they’re uniformly horrible. Like, but that’s their little world. You decide what comes into the little world. [00:03:12] Merlin: But if you never get a beat on wh

And this week, our special guest is one of our favorite return guests, Mr. Jay Miller. Welcome, everybody. [00:00:18] Jeff: Timber! [00:00:18] Brett: Hey. [00:00:19] Jay: up! [00:00:20] Jeff: Hi, Jay. [00:00:21] Jay: Always a pleasure, always a pleasure to be here, uh, and then I’ll go back and listen to it later and go, why the hell did I say the things that I said? [00:00:29] Christina: this is one of the reasons I do not listen to podcasts that I’ve been on. Like, it’s weird. I will re watch videos that I, that I do a million times to go over in my head every little thing that I did wrong and to assess my My performance and go, okay, you could have done this better, this better, or oh, that was actually a really good performance. [00:00:47] Christina: Um, podcasts, I don’t because it’s too cringe. And I also don’t want to be reminded of the things that I said that off the cuff of my, my tongue that I was like, oh yeah, that was probably pissing people off. Sorry about that. [00:01:00] Whoops. [00:01:01] Jay: See, I’m like the exact opposite. I will go back and listen to a podcast because I’m just like, eh, no one cares. Like, no one listens to this. The, I think, um, another podcaster I listened to like said, your audience isn’t real. Until they prove it, they’re not real. So, but like, videos, I refuse to watch myself do anything on video, because I will nitpick the hell out of myself. [00:01:23] Jay: And then Jeff will be like, Oh, Jade did this video one time. And I’ll go back and I’ll look at it and be [00:01:27] Jeff: yeah, that happened. [00:01:28] Jay: like, God, my hair. What was I doing? [00:01:31] Christina: like, you’re like, what was going on? See, it’s weird. I think that we do them for the same reasons. Like I, I, it, The reason I don’t go back and list a podcast is because they’re not real, whereas it’s my perfectionism nature, uh, that I’m like, oh no, but the video is real, and that will have consequences, so I need to be aware of that. [00:01:50] Jeff: Yeah, that’s true. That’s true. [00:01:53] Ranting about Apple’s Vido Reactions [00:01:53] Brett: Um, um, um, um, um. Oh, I forgot. I had a, I had like a topic. I had a [00:02:00] topic and then Jay’s has reactions on, on his camera. And it was like, it was popping up random bubbles. And I got distracted, like checking my reaction settings. And I totally lost this topic that was brewing in my mind. [00:02:14] Christina: Can I can I okay, I gotta rant on that then, because They know that this is a problem. Apple, uh, meaning they. Apple knows that this reaction bullshit is a problem and that it has been a problem since the beta. People have reported it. People internally, uh, according to sources closest to the information, have reported it to very high up people. [00:02:32] Christina: This is supposed to be fixed. Um, [00:02:34] Jeff: They’ve gone to Steve Jobs grave. [00:02:37] Christina: I mean, Steve Jobs would not put up with this. I’m not one of those people who ever [00:02:41] Jeff: put up with Steve Jobs. [00:02:42] Christina: Well, I mean, I, but, but I’m one of those people who never wants to invoke the, this wouldn’t have happened under Steve. Cause it’s [00:02:48] Jeff: Yeah, yeah, [00:02:48] Christina: False fallacy thing. It’s a bullshit thing to do, but I will say this. [00:02:51] Christina: This is some sort of like slap sloppy ass like bad program managed

[00:00:07] Introduction to the Season Premier [00:00:07] Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Overtired. This is Overtired, the podcast you’ve been waiting for all year. And here we are. This is episode 341. I don’t know what it’s called yet, but I’m here with Christina. Hello, Christina. [00:00:22] Christina: Happy New Year. [00:00:24] Jeff: Christina Warren, for those of you who are joining for the first time because you needed something new this year. [00:00:29] Jeff: Uh, Brett Terpstra, hi. [00:00:31] Brett: Yo, [00:00:32] Jeff: And we are starting 2024 with the amazing Alex Cox. I’m so excited about this. Hello, Alex. Amazing! [00:00:41] Alex: qualifiers on how you define amazing, but so happy here on the season premiere of Overtired. [00:00:50] Christina: Yes. Yes. [00:00:51] Jeff: premiere! Oh yeah, let’s make it a season premiere. Is it episode 400 because [00:00:55] Jeff: way that only we do our episode numbers? We juke stats! We juke [00:01:00] the stats, as they used to say in The Wire. Alex, host of, host of, co host of the podcast, uh, Dubai Friday, and, um, and haptic. fm. I listened to Dubai Friday, about three episodes, just to get ready for this, um, thing, and I really love that [00:01:15] Alex: Oh, I apologize. Oh, goodness, goodness [00:01:18] The Appeal of Conversational Podcasts [00:01:18] Jeff: much. Do you know what it reminds me of? One of the earliest, the first podcast I listened to, I actually listened to it in order to write this article about podcasts for a magazine, uh, way, way, way, way back, and it was the Don and Drew show, [00:01:31] Christina: my god, [00:01:31] Alex: Oh yeah. [00:01:33] Jeff: it this couple, was this couple in their barn, I think, and I think in Illinois, um, and they were really, um, Fucking funny. [00:01:42] Jeff: And the whole podcast was just the two of them talking to each other. And I remember being like this format I love. And to this day, I way prefer two people bullshitting to something super produced and beautiful, like a radio lab or anything else. Not to diss any of that. It’s an [00:02:00] amazing amount of work, but it’s like public access TV, man, but it’s just a little bit better. [00:02:04] Brett: How about four people bullshitting? [00:02:06] Jeff: Four people bullshitting is great. [00:02:08] Alex: my sweet spot is always the number three, so I’m absolutely ruining your season premiere. But I think with the amount Merlin talks, we kind of even out three people. [00:02:21] Jeff: Also, four people is fun, because it’s like bumper cars. and I kind of that. So welcome. [00:02:28] Alex: I’m so glad that I get to be here. Thank you so much. [00:02:31] Jeff: Thank you. Well, should we? Let’s do this. What are we doing? We doing some mental health? Corner? Who wants to go to the corner? [00:02:38] Brett: our format. That’s our, that’s our formula. [00:02:43] Alex: I [00:02:44] Jeff: we can refresh. What is Mental Health Corner, Brett? Hit it. [00:02:47] Mental Health Corner (Part 1) [00:02:47] Brett: Okay, um, what is Mental Health Corner? Mental Health Corner is three and sometimes four people describing where they’re at and what they’ve been through in the last week. In this [00:03:00] case, like the last month, it’s been a while. Um, but, uh, just like, uh, it’s a check in. [00:03:06] Brett: It’s a, it’s a way to, I don’t know, like, I feel like we learn a lot. I get a lot of email from listeners and the one thing they always mention is the mental health corner. Like people find something

Transcript Person of the What? [00:00:00] Brett: Hey, welcome to Overtired. I’m here with Christina Warren and Jeff Severins Gunsel. Uh, trigger warning at the top of the show. Um, we may be discussing some themes of suicidal ideation. Uh, we’ll see how that goes, but just, uh, just be warned if that is a trigger for you. Uh, maybe skip this one or fast forward to the next chapter. [00:00:28] Brett: We’ll see. How are you guys doing? Better than you, obviously. [00:00:33] Christina: I was to say, I well, I was doing okay. And then heard, uh, heard that. No. Um, I mean, I’m fine, but I’m, I’m more interested in how you’re doing. [00:00:46] Jeff: Yeah, I feel like, uh, let’s, let’s, let’s go. [00:00:49] Brett: Get that, [00:00:50] Jeff: Hi, Brett. Hi, Christina. [00:00:52] Mental Health Corner (TW: Suicidal Thoughts) [00:00:52] Brett: Let’s get that off the plate at the top. So I have been going through. Some dark, uh, dark [00:01:00] thinking. And it’s not all the time. It’s, uh, especially evenings. I just, I start, I’m not planning suicide. I’m not thinking about what I would do or how I would do it or anything like that. I’m just thinking how much I would like to not be here. [00:01:18] Brett: And, um, it’s not at the crisis level where I want to call a hotline, which I have done. Um, I’ve done the hotlines and, uh, anyone in Minnesota, 2 1 1 is a great resource. Uh, and Nationwide, 9 8 8 is a great resource, but, um, like I’m not It’s not at a crisis point where I’m like, if I don’t talk to someone, I’m going to hurt myself. [00:01:43] Brett: Um, I’m not hurting myself, but the thoughts get very dark and they scare me. And I don’t like to tell anybody about them because people aren’t equipped to deal with that kind of, my partner isn’t equipped to deal with those [00:02:00] feelings. Um, they’re very scary when you hear someone close to you, or even tangentially. [00:02:06] Brett: Like for me, when I, I was watching Welcome to Wrexham last night and I had been having a pretty good night. And then this girl that was kind of a main character in that episode, uh, talked about how her father had committed suicide and they were showing pictures of like him being happy and like a loving father. [00:02:27] Brett: And just like, it hit me like how dark, how people can be so outwardly. affable, and be so hurting inside. And just hearing about other people and, and suicidal ideation and suicide itself, uh, it, it hits me in the gut. Like, I cry just like, I sob when I hear that stuff. Um, it feels, it feels a little too close to home for me. [00:02:57] Brett: So, so that’s my mental health [00:03:00] check in. How are you guys doing? [00:03:03] Christina: I’m really, really sad to, I mean, thank you for sharing that. I’m, I’m really, I, I completely understand the hesitancy in sharing this stuff because you’re right. People don’t know how to deal with it. And my experience is it’s, it’s one of two responses. It’s either people who are really disturbed and really upset by it, or, uh, what I would find is arguably even the worst response, which is they’re not concerned at all. [00:03:26] Christina: They just assume that you’re full of shit and, and that, that you’re just saying stuff and that they [00:03:31] Brett: Yeah, that, that would be awful. I, I haven’t run into that. Everyone who I have talked to takes it very seriously. [00:03:38] Christina: um, with all respect, you’re a guy and, that, and, and that, that’s a, it’s a, it’s a massively, massively. Massively gendered thing. Um, uh, as, as mental health is in general. [00:03:51] Christina: Um, you know, like, like women are, have been historically treated so differently when it comes to our mental health than men have. Like, we were the ones who were sent to sanitariums. [00:04

Christina is gone this week, but she will magically be back thanks to multiple technological miracles for an ad read of Notion, who is this week’s sponsor, so stay tuned for that. I’m Brett Terpstra, I’m here with Jess Severins Gunsel, and I think, I think we’re doing okay. [00:00:28] Jeff: Yeah, yeah. You just, you just reminded me of that. So Minnesota Public Radio, obviously our public radio station here, um, there’s just a lot of good people that either left or were laid off over the last few years. And some of them, they keep their voices on the spots. And, and they’re people who like it. [00:00:44] Jeff: Leaving was hard or was painful or was unfair, anything, right? And then they still come on, on the radio being like, you know, well, you’re listening to Minnesota Public Radio. What about, you know, it’s just like, wow. Anyway, but Christina is, is definitely coming back. She wasn’t laid off, [00:00:59] Brett: No, [00:01:00] she was not. Um. [00:01:02] Jeff: You’d lose a lot of income getting laid off from Overtired. Anyway. Hi, [00:01:08] Brett: that will you lose that sweet, sweet notion money. [00:01:11] Brett: Uh, [00:01:12] Jeff: man. [00:01:13] Mental Health Corner [00:01:13] Brett: Yeah. So, um, let’s, uh, let’s just kick it off right off with a mental health corner. Um, if you would like, I will start. [00:01:22] Jeff: Yeah, do it. [00:01:23] Brett: Um, so the holidays have proven to be, I never realized how stressful holidays were on me. Um, and looking back, um, it’s. I, I dread, uh, hanging out with my family. [00:01:41] Brett: It triggers me in all kinds of ways, um, but I’ve always just accepted it as kind of a, a price of existing. Um, [00:01:51] Brett: and with my last two partners, Um, they have hated my family enough, understandably, [00:02:00] that if I chose to hang out with my family, I felt like I was disappointing them. And if I chose to skip family gatherings, I felt like I was disappointing my family. [00:02:14] Brett: So I get faced with this no win situation, no matter what I choose. And I have this huge fear of disappointing people. Like, it has Huge, a dramatic effect on my, um, my well being, even on my physical health. Uh, I, I can’t stand to have people feel like they’re disappointed in me. Um, or even, or even for me to feel like they’re disappointed in me, even if they’re not. [00:02:44] Brett: Um, and, [00:02:45] Brett: and, [00:02:46] Jeff: we decide that that’s true and it’s not true. Yeah, yeah, totally. I experience that. [00:02:50] Brett: Well, and this, like, with my parents, I project all of the beliefs of the church onto them, even, and I don’t know that they [00:03:00] hold these beliefs, I just, I’ve amalgamated all of the things I learned in my childhood And, and put it on my parents. And, and like, I react to anything they say with that lens of, okay, you believe everything this fucked up church has ever told you. [00:03:20] Brett: And maybe they don’t. But they, they also continue to support that church, um, that has had, A horrible impact on many kids my age. Um, not that I’m a kid now, but like, I talked to you, [00:03:35] Jeff: That kid is in you. [00:03:36] Brett: I, I moved, I moved back to the town where I went to that church, and I have become friends with multiple ex Ex Pleasant Valley kids, kids who went through that youth group, kids who went through that church, and we all carry our own version of religious [00:04:00] trauma, um, and by and large, like, a lot of the, a lot of the people I know who survived it, um, are queer, and like, the damage that that church did to queer people is It’s unforgivable. [00:04:18] Brett: Um, like nobody can

[00:00:24] Christina: Good to be here. [00:00:26] Jeff: you too. You know, I just watched, I don’t know why, the Siskel and Ebert review of Three Amigos the other day on YouTube. [00:00:33] Christina: Now, now, did they like it or not? Cause I could see it going either way. I could see like, [00:00:37] Jeff: They did not, but [00:00:38] Christina: I figured that Cisco I knew would hate it. Ebert, I was like, I could see it go either [00:00:42] Jeff: exactly, no, Ebert was the warmer to it, but what, so what I loved about that is I forgot how, um, I forgot how like cruel they could be to movies and to each other, which I kind of love. And also I, what I love about Ebert is like, he’s like, No, I get it. [00:01:00] This movie’s terrible, but you know what? There were two amazing moments, right? [00:01:03] Jeff: Like, like, I like that kind of like that nuance that you don’t really get on TV anymore, right? Where like, yeah, but anyway, I don’t know why I was watching. I can’t remember why I [00:01:12] Christina: That’s amazing. So, so, uh, very quickly, I will, I’m gonna give a plug to two books, um, of Ebert’s that are, uh, compilations of some of his reviews of his most hated films. So the first is called, I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie. And that title is from the 1994, I wanna say Elijah Wood, uh, movie called North. [00:01:33] Christina: And I remember this because I remember reading this review when I was like 10 years old. ’cause I, I liked Elijah Wood, uh, because 10, um, and, uh, um, but, but that it is a truly terrible movie about a kid who tries to divorce his parents and then goes around the world trying to find replacement parents. [00:01:48] Christina: It’s a bad movie and. [00:01:50] Jeff: you gotta go all over. [00:01:51] Christina: and, uh, and then the next, uh, one, uh, which was published, um, a few years later, um, it’s called Your Movie Sucks. And so, um, [00:02:00] there, uh, again, like, there are a number of compilations of all of his reviews, but Your Movie Sucks, and I hated, hated, hated this movie, two of my favorites. Um, he also has, I think, five volumes of, uh, The Great Movies, which is, like, all of his, uh, movies. [00:02:15] Christina: Stuff. And then there’s also, um, like a thing of it’s four star reviews. I’m looking through Amazon right now and I’m like, how many of these things do I fucking have? And I have a lot of them, um, in print or in digital form. Um, uh, small Roger Ebert fan as a kid, as, as you and an adult, as you can tell. But anyway, if you ever want to read his, his very funny, uh, not as good as maybe the TV show. [00:02:37] Christina: Cause like you said, they were mean to each other. Um, but, uh, but they loved each other, but they were mean to each other. Um, [00:02:43] Jeff: they were mean. [00:02:45] Christina: One of their best appearances was on The Critic, incidentally, and they, when Siskel died, like Ebert even called that out as like one of their most fun experiences because they kind of liked each other, but they also kind of didn’t. [00:02:59] Christina: But anyway, [00:03:00] I, I, I, which you can tell watching the show, but, but, uh, if you want to read just excorciating Uh, Bad Movies, um, like this is, this is a, this is from his, um, One Star Review of Armageddon from 1998. The movie is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, com

Transcript The DevRel Episode [00:00:00] Christina: Hello, you’re listening to Overtired. That’s right. There was not an error in your podcast feed. Uh, we are actually back with another episode. I’m Christina Warren, joined as always by Brett Terpstra. Jeff Severins Gunzel could not be with us this week, but that means that we are with, back with one of our very favorite guests, um, uh, your friend and mine, Mr. [00:00:25] Christina: Jay Miller. Jay, welcome back! [00:00:28] Jay: It, uh, getting on here the first time felt like a fluke, and now, now I just feel like I’ve, I’ve, I’m on to something. [00:00:37] Brett: Do we have a new co host? If, if, if, if Jeff ever, if Jeff ever bows out, we’ll give you a call. [00:00:44] Jay: as, as long as we don’t have to go through voting like 57 times to elect me as the, the new Overtired speaker, [00:00:54] Brett: Yeah. Christina, Christina is part of the Freedom Caucus. She’s gonna, she’s gonna block [00:01:00] your, uh, your, uh, nomination every time. [00:01:02] Christina: That’s exactly what it’s going to be. I’m going to be like, no, look, there, there are too many Atlanta people now. And so [00:01:08] Jay: I love it. [00:01:10] Brett: So, uh. We, just fair warning, we may be off again next week, but then we’re going to get back into a weekly, uh, uh, session again and try to stick with weekly episodes moving forward. We had a, we had a very extended summer break. [00:01:31] Christina: we did and we needed it. It was, it was, it was okay. Like, honestly, since the pandemic, uh, Brett, we’ve been insanely consistent. Like, like, like we’ve had a couple of like dips and dots that were big in there. But given the fact that we once went, I think, 14 months between episodes, I think that having like a few weeks away for our longtime loyal listeners, and thank you very much to those of you who’ve listened to us for a long time, um, Um, we were good actually at the top of that, [00:02:00] when I was at, um, all Things Open a few weeks ago, uh, I ran into Cullen, um, who told me that, um, Brett and, and I had gotten him through some really tough times and that was like the nicest thing that anybody has ever just like walked up and told me. [00:02:15] Christina: And so Cullen, I, I don’t know if you’re listening or not, uh, I don’t know if you still listen, but the fact that I had an overtired listener come up to me at all, things open and I had overtired hadn’t even been on in a while. And I hadn’t even announced that like I was gonna be there. Like that was the nicest and coolest and, uh, like most affirming thing. [00:02:31] Christina: So [00:02:32] Brett: Yeah, that always, that always feels good. Um, as someone who over shares constantly, um, I get, I get a fair number of emails. Um, at least weekly, sometimes multiple days in a row of people just saying, Hey, you, you made my life easier. You made it easier for me to talk about my mental health at my job. You made it easier for me to talk to my family about my mental health. [00:02:59] Brett: And [00:03:00] yeah, there’s a, there’s a place for us. We have, we have a purpose in the world. [00:03:07] Christina: There’s a place for nerdy geeks who really like to talk about automation and, um, nerd tools, uh, pop culture and, uh, and mental health. So yay. [00:03:16] Mental Health Corner [00:03:16] Brett: Speaking of mental health, should we kick off a mental health corner? [00:03:21] Christina: We should do it. We should do it. [00:03:23] Brett: Um, I, I can go, but I want to open the floor to Jay. Jay, do you want to kick off the mental health corner? [00:03:32] Jay: yeah, let’s, let’s talk about this. So, um, all of us have this fun role that we call DevRel. Um, no one really knows what it is. I love how every interview starts off with, how do you define [00:03:49] Christina: Yes. Thank you. So funny. [00:03:52] Jay: a large part of that for me was being out in the community and just hanging out with people. And, um, for those [00:04:00] that don’t know me, hi, I’m Jay, I’m black, and my voice sometimes does not show th
