S1 Ep 130TFT129: Optimal Vs Practical Training For Hikers

One of my core philosophies are a coach, is to present and share training and preparation strategies which are practical for a hiker to follow. My whole intention with the information I share (and use myself) is how can a hiker, trekker or backpacker, see the best results, with the least amount of effort and stress? I firmly believe that this is the key to success for 99% of people out there. And this is also why I rarely talk about what is 'optimal' in your training. Because optimal is almost never practical. And if something is not practical, then it probably isn't a great recommendation for the majority of people. In this episode, I explore this subject in a bit more detail and talk you through a few classic examples of 'optimal' training recommendations. == Want to learn more about training for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 122TFT121: Back Pain Checklist For Hikers

In this episode, I talk through a simple checklist a hiker can use if they struggle with back pain. == We all know back pain is a terrible thing. There is nothing so stressful, so scary and so debilitating as recurring back pain. And if you are preparing for a significant hike, and you struggle with back pain, it can make things tricky. Because you need to be careful with longer hikes, you need to be careful with heavy pack training and you need to be careful with types of strength training. It can sometimes all seem a bit overwhelming. And in everyday life, this is bad enough. But if you have a significant hike looming over you, with a start date that gets closer and closer, it can really cause you a lot of stress.. I know. Because I have seen this countless times. But I will tell you right now; there is a solution to all of this. It is possible to get fit, strong and resilient for a hiking adventure, even if you struggle with back pain. It is possible to make a significant reduction in your back discomfort, while you are simultaneously improving your hiking conditioning. It is possible to get yourself back to fully enjoying your adventures, without that dark cloud of fear looming over you... And this is all possible with the right guidance, support and advice. If you have found any of this resonating with you today, If you struggle with back pain while hiking and are sick of it ruining your fun on the trail, I am here to help. This October, I am starting a new back pain Case Study group, and I'm looking for hikers who want to make a change. So if you are interested in significantly reducing your back pain over the next 12 weeks, while at the same time improving your hiking fitness, then find me on Facebook or Instagram and shoot me a message with the words' CASE STUDY', and we can chat. === Want to learn more about training for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 105TFT104: How To Increase Your Hiking Speed

In this episode, I discuss a few specific workouts a hiker can use to increase their hiking speed. Some people are quick hikers. Some people are slower hikers. When it comes down to it, it usually doesn't matter what pace you go. Hiking is for your pleasure. And in all honesty, as long as you are comfortable, having a good time and can safely complete your distances, speed shouldn't be your primary concern. However, there are a few situations where a hiker might want to increase their hiking speed: You are going with a group and don't want to hold people up You want to be able to cover more miles or kilometres every day You like the challenge And in any of these situations, increasing the speed which you can hike, can potentially be very important. Now when it comes to hiking speed, there are two things every single hiker should be doing: 1) Improving their fitness 2) Improving their strength The reasoning behind this is if you can improve your endurance and strength, allowing you to need less rest while hiking, and allowing you to sustain a higher pace in tough sections, this will dramatically increase your speed. However, if you are already doing these things, there are a few specific workouts a hiker can follow to help increase their hiking speed. And in this episode, I tell you exactly what they are. You will learn: When improving your hiking speed might be important Why general fitness and strength are so crucial for improving your speed on the trail Why it is so hard to improve your hiking speed if you are not consciously trying to do so Three specific workouts which can be fantastic for improving hiking speed == Join the Training For Hiking And Trekking Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/trainingforhikingandtrekking/ == Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? In this episode, I discuss whether or not Crossfit is a suitable training method for hikers. A little while ago I was asked what my opinion on Crossfit for hikers was. So today I explore what the benefits and drawbacks of this type of training for hiking are, and how to best use it in your week (if you decide you want to). S1 Ep 100TFT99: Improving Mobility For Hikers

In this episode, I explore a few strategies to help a hiker improve their range of motion in tight muscles. Mobility training is important for most hikers. This is because, if certain muscles are restricted, this can cause compensations in other areas of the body, which can often lead to aches, pains and even injury. Unfortunately, about 95% of hikers out there training for mobility, will not be doing the right things to improve their range of motion. Sure, what they are doing will likely feel good, bring a bit of relief to sore muscles and aid relaxation, but if they tested if they were making changes to their mobility, more than likely they are not. So today, I explore a few simple strategies I use with my hikers, to help improve range of motion and mobility in specific muscles and make an effective, long term change. You will learn; Three common mistakes hikers make with their mobility training Why foam rolling is not the 'magic pill' for improving mobility which many make it out to be Four simple mobility strategies you can apply into your week Join the Training For Hiking And Trekking Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/trainingforhikingandtrekking/ === Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 98TFT97: How To Prevent Burning Calves While Hiking

In this episode, we discuss what a hiker can do to prevent always getting burning and tight calves while hiking. The calves are such an essential muscle group for hikers, trekkers, backpackers and mountaineers. They play a crucial role during ascents and descents and are crucial to protect the feet, ankles and knees while on the trail. But even though most hikers know they are important, unfortunately, they ofter get overlooked in training. Usually, for the reason that calf training can be a bit boring, and often gets neglected in favour of some more 'fun' type of training. And this often leads to many hikers regularly dealing with burning, tight and sore calves while on the trail, which is just not much fun. The common approach to this situation for hikers is to do regular stretching and foam rolling on the calves, to give them some relief. And while this is important, this is only half the battle. And if this is all you are doing, you are likely doomed to repeat a never-ending cycle. Instead, hikers should consider applying some targeted strengthening exercises to help strengthen up the different muscles of the calves, and allow you to stay comfortable and happy on the trail. So today, we explore in detail how a hiker can best train their calves, to get them strong and resilient for their adventures. You will learn: How to use stretching and foam rolling to relieve the calves during training and hiking Why only relying on stretching to prevent sore calves is a mistake Understanding the two different muscles of the calves Two types of calf exercises every single hiker should be doing in their training A slightly more advanced type of calf training, which can be great for adding some extra strength, endurance and resilience Join the Training For Hiking And Trekking Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/trainingforhikingandtrekking/ === Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 97TFT96: Training For Hiking Around Your Neighbourhood

In this episode, I discuss how a hiker can close the gap between general and specific training when they can't get out on the trail to train. In many occasions, hikers find themselves incredibly busy before a significant adventure. And for some people, this means that finding time to go out hiking, or travel to the gym is just not realistic. And in these instances, many hikers try to do most (if not all) of their training around their local neighbourhood. While this is not ideal, if you need to save on time, this is perfectly fine! However, while most people can develop their 'fitness' well enough around the neighbourhood, sometimes their body is not prepared for some of the 'specific' challenges of the trail (such as uneven terrain, elevation and leg endurance). So with this in mind, this episode was created to give hikers a few simple ideas, which will help close this gap. And allow them to develop 'specific' fitness and strength while training around the local neighbourhood. You will learn; A simple change to your walking and running training, which can help prepare you for the uneven nature of the trail A simple goal to aim for with your loaded pack walking (if you are doing it around the local neighbourhood) A fantastic type of training to include to help develop foot, ankle and calf strength One simple inclusion (which you can do locally) which can make you MUCH more comfortable during elevation hiking A great workout (which I have talked about multiple times) which is a MUST for any hiker training in the local neighbourhood You can join the Training For Hiking And Trekking Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/trainingforhikingandtrekking/ === Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 95TFT94: Progressing Elevation Training (Without Adding Weight)

In this episode, I discuss a few unusual ways of progressing your stair or hill intervals (which don't involve adding extra weight, spending more time or finding a new place to train). Hikers love stair training. With good reason! It is super specific for the trail. It can be seriously challenging. And, for many people, it is very convenient. The usual approach of hikers to stair training goes something like this: They find a convenient set of stairs. They start with just their body weight. Over time, they slowly add some weight to their pack. This approach works. There can be no doubt about that! But what if you don't want to add any more weight? Maybe you are at the limit you can confidently wear. Perhaps you have maxed out your pack's carrying capacities. Maybe your upper body is getting a bit sore. What then? Well, this is what we explore in today's episode. You will learn: How 'pre-fatiguing' your legs can help trick the body into thinking it is working harder How changing where you carry the weight can be an easy way of adding some extra training stimulus A few different 'stepping patterns' you can apply to stair training, to add some extra challenge === Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 94TFT93: Jumping Training For Hikers

In this episode, I discuss the right and the wrong way's for a hiker to use jump training (i.e. jump squats, lunge jumps etc.) in their workouts. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with jump training. On the one hand, I KNOW that if applied right, it can be incredibly beneficial for hikers. On the other hand, I know that if applied wrong, it carries an unnecessary risk of pain and injury. And, unfortunately, 95% of people using jump training in their workouts, are using it wrong... So today, I explore in-depth my thoughts around this subject. So you can understand why I shake my head at so many workouts I see online, and you can be empowered to make intelligent decisions with this type of training. You will learn: Why it is a mistake to use jump training to develop your cardio or muscular endurance An unusual method of jump training which can be incredibly beneficial for hikers (particularly at helping your descents) How jump training might be applied in helping you recover from ankle injuries My favourite form of jump training, which I think is incredibly useful for hikers How to use this type of training to improve your strength workouts === Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? S1 Ep 92TFT91: Altitude Masks For Hikers

In this episode I discuss Altitude Masks (also known as Elevation Masks) and whether they are an effective training tool for hikers, trekkers or mountaineers heading off on a high altitude adventure. One of the most common questions I hear from aspiring trekkers is: "Should I be training with an 'altitude mask'. Will it help me?" Now on the off chance you haven't seen one of these, they are the big black gas mask looking things, which people strap to their face while they train. Due to some clever marketing (using professional athletes) these things blew onto the scene a few years ago and have become super popular. Everyone is always looking for an 'edge' to their training. And, in theory, these masks might give you one. But in practice, do they actually work? In this episode, we explore: What 'altitude' masks actually do (and how they apparently 'simulate' altitude) Does an altitude mask help prepare you for high altitude Can an altitude mask help improve your endurance performance Can an elevation mask strengthen your breathing muscles? Is an elevation mask a good way to improve mental strength Want to get fit, strong and resilient for a high-altitude hike?
