Ep 65The Toxic Avenger: Was It Really That Bad

E

Was It Really That Bad returns with a vengeance (and new rules) in possibly our most chaotic show. It's debate style and we have no idea who is on which team until we're already live on the episode. For our first attempt, we went back to the 80's and picked Troma royalty The Toxic Avenger. Joined again by our special guest Matt Gilbert from the Matt & Mark Movie Show (who was lucky enough to land on the positive side), we argue whether this deserves its place on the classic pedestal. Buzzers are flying everywhere and no one is playing fair as we debate Was It Really That Bad. Ep 64American Graffiti: Should Have Seen That By Now

E

For this episode we take a cruise down the strip that is American Graffiti. Written and directed by George Lucas and nominated for 5 Oscars, our shameful secret is revealed that NONE of us had seen this. Joined by our special guest host Matt from the Matt & Mark Movie Show we follow rising star Richard Dreyfuss and complete nobody Ronny Howard (kidding... he already had a million credits before doing this) as they drive their way through the most misguided and epic last night before college. Ep 37Films of 1962: To Kill A Mockingbird, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, King Kong vs. Godzilla

E

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave & John discuss films from 1962. We had to cut out a segment of David Fincher talking smack about studios while praising Netflix and other streaming services, but that's available on our YouTube page. Just search "The Love of Cinema Podcast" and you'll see our ugly ass faces wearing masks in our picture. We also filmed our 'Baby Jane' segment. The first film in our discussion is To Kill A Mockingbird- should we continue to read the book and see the film? We then head to What Ever Happened To Baby Jane starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in the movie that inspired FEUD, which was that Ryan Murphy series you may remember. Finally, we try to redeem King Kong vs. Godzilla: was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 63The Sting: Should Have Seen That By Now with Jack Daniel

E

In our midweek episode we are once again joined by Jack Daniel (not the alcohol) of WK1047 Charlotte. We begin with a discussion of his 50 years in radio and witnessing the podcast boon before discussing his favorite movie, The Sting. John, Dave and Jeff had never seen the movie in full, and it's one we should have seen by now! The Sting stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman, one of the greatest on-screen pairs of all time. Ep 62Army of the Dead with Special Guest Host Jack Daniel

E

This week on the pod we are joined by longtime radio host Jack Daniel (not the alcohol) from Charlotte's k104.7 to discuss Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, which just dropped on Netflix. It's about a zombie army. Well, they try to rob a casino in zombie-infested Las Vegas, so it's a heist film a la Ocean's 11, but re-routing the Game of Throne's season 7 penultimate episode with the plot of Aliens, as co-host Dave points out. And War of the Planet of the Apes. But with two breeds of zombies- super zombies and regular zombies, so Game of Thrones except in the desert. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell and Tig Notaro, who's hilarious. Guest Host: Jack Daniel of https://k1047.com/ Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 61Citizen Kane: Should Have Seen That By Now

E

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John premier their new segment: Should Have Seen That By Now. It's based on an idea from our friend and sometimes-co-host Ryan who watched well over 300 movies last year and took requests. Out of all those movies he said his favorite was 'Paddington 2' WHICH, segue, unseated 'Citizen Kane' as the #1 ranked movie on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the uncovering of a Chicago Tribune review from 1941, which thought Kane wasn't entertaining. That, along with David Fincher's 'Mank' premiering on Netflix in 2020, and Yankee Jeff and Aussie Dave having never seen the film, made this an interesting time for us to discuss Orson Welles' masterpiece, 'Citizen Kane', available to stream on HBOMax. Speaking of requests... We take them! Please find us on the socials and give us your picks. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 60Mortal Kombat

E

After taking a few weeks off, we're back! Hosts John, Dave & Jeff break down our new format before discussing the new film Mortal Kombat, which was released on HBOMax the same day it came out in theaters per WB's 2021 agenda. The film is fun, so we drank some beers and talked about it. Later in the week we will premier our new segment, Should Have Seen It By Now, with Citizen Kane. In honor of Mank and Paddington 2, Dave and Jeff discuss their first viewing of the film as John tries to roast us. Easy, man. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 59Oscars Special: 2021 picks!

E

This week Jeff, Dave and John celebrate 15 weeks of watching 2021 awards season films with their Oscars Special! We were originally pairing an Oscar movie with a Razzie movie, but Glenn Close got us pissed. Actually that whole character. Kristen Wiig as Cheetah? A teenage? Get out of here. After praising Nicolas Cage in Jiu Jitsu, we go category by category talking about what we saw, who we want to win and who we think will. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 58Pieces of a Woman, Another Round: It Was The Best of Film!

E

In the 14th week of watching Oscar movies from 2020-ish, Jeff, Dave and John discuss that Vanessa Kirby/Shia LeBeouf Netflix movie you've passed over for months, waiting for the time to see it, and the surprise Best Director nominated film for Thomas Vinterberg where Mads Mikkelson tries to see if his life will improve by maintaining a BAC of .05%, available on Hulu. So, a pretty damn good week! 3 Oscar noms between the two films. Follow us on the socials, listed below. We'd love to hear you roast us for something. Seriously, Dave cannot ignore a troll. Ep 57News of the World, The Father: It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Best(?) of Film (of 2020)

E

Lucky week 13 of our Best of Film awards Series starts with Take 2 as our entire live stream had combusted 2 minutes earlier. John might need a new computer and Dave gives Marvel and DC Toxic Fandom a well earned dressing down before we moved on to watching Tom Hanks battle pretty much all of Texas to return a lost girl home in News of the World. We followed that up with a movie that is both heartfelt and a not a little bit terrifying in the way it deals with an aging man losing control of his reality as Anthony Hopkins shows he can still deliver a masterful performance in The Father. Ep 56Minari, Promising Young Woman: It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Best(?) of Film (of 2020)

E

In the 12th week of our Oscars/Razzies series "It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Worst of Film (of 2020)" we ditched the Razzies and doubled up on some Oscar films. With 11 nominations between the two, for a current rental price tag of $26, we got to support some great film makers and see some good movies! After a brief (very brief) discussion of the Snyder Cut, we open up a discussion of Minari and just how incredible and timely this film is. We then discuss Promising Young Woman and just how timely this film is. Is the film as good as its themes, concept, subject matter, cinematography, color palate and the leading performance of it's star- Carey Mulligan? Maybe, just see this movie, it's really important to witness, watch and listen. Intro/Minari (0:00) Promising Young Woman (36:20) Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 55'The United States vs. Billie Holliday', Sia's 'Music': It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

In the 11th week of our Oscar/Razzie series, after Glenn Close's nomination got us riled up last week, we decided this would be the last for our Razzie's segment. Thanks, 'Music'. We start our featured segment with a conversation about the incredibly powerful 'The United States vs. Billie Holiday'. Andra Day should probably just win that Oscar. We then discuss Sia's 'Music', which had critics, audiences and Twitter in frenzy tin 2020. We break down the film as well as our thoughts on the surrounding controversies. Ep 54One Night in Miami, Hillbilly Elegy: It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Worst of Film (of 2020)"

E

In week 10 of our "It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie sries, we chose One Night in Miami as our Oscar movie and Hillbilly Elegy as our Razzie movie, even though it also received 2 Oscar noms. First of all, F the razzies to hell. Yes, we're doing segments on it, but Glenn Close? "I Will Not Be Ignored" is up for a Raz- are you out of your godDAMN mind, razzies? Anyway, Regina King was snubbed by the Oscars for her beautifully shot 'One Night in Miami' and Ron Howard's Hillbilly Elegy was not as bad as the Razzies. In fact, some of our hosts may have been tickled in their biscuits by it. Give it a listen and remember to subscribe. Ep 53Nomadland, The Witches: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

After 8 weeks of perfect professionalism, it all falls apart in the opening as we launch into week 9 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie episodes like a SpaceX rocket landing. First up is the current heavy hitter on the awards circuit Nomadland, a film that moved us so much we can't even think of a joke about it. Following that we dive into the reimagining of Roald Dahl's The Witches to find out just how much therapy your kid's will need when you put on this cute mousey adventure and leave them unattended. Ep 52Judas and the Black Messiah, Mulan: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

Co-host Jeff had some audio issues at the beginning of the pod, but week 8 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie series made it to print with a discussion of Golden Globe winner Judas and the Black Messiah and potential Razzie nominee Mulan. If you haven't seen Judas yet, just do it. Do it. It's on HBOmax. Kaluuya and Stanfield are legends who will be in our lives for 40+ years, as will director Shaka King and producer Ryan Coogler. Mulan is on Disney+. Please give us a follow on the socials! We record live on Twitch and Facebook every Sunday, we drink beer and we respond to hecklers. Ep 51The Midnight Sky, The New Mutants: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

Episode 50!! We're so excited to have passed 3,200 downloads as well as many more engagements on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch. Thanks for listening! This episode was week 7 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" series where we pair a presumed Oscar nominated film with a presumed Razzie nominated film to recap notable works from 2020. Our "Best of Film" entry is the George Clooney-directed/starring Climate Change space "epic?" The Midnight Sky, available to stream on Netflix. While the film will likely gather awards attention for it's Alexandre Desplat score and it's incredible visual effects and cinematography, does the story keep this film from deviating its course (movie reference)? Our "Worst of Film" entry is The New Mutants, which features incredible performances by it's young stars including Anya Taylor-Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton. But did the 3 years of studio and production moves end up haunting this film's story? Intro/The Midnight Sky (0:00) The New Mutants (36:20) Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 49Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Artemis Fowl: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

This week on the pod John, Dave & Jeff discuss how well Ma Rainey's Black Bottom translated from stage to screen with the ensemble performance of the year and two incredible leading performances by Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. We then shift to a discussion of Artemis Fowl, starring Dame Judy Dench, Josh Gad and Colin Ferrell, Directed by Kenneth Branagh, in which we try to figure out what the hell happened. This was week 6 of our segment "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020) in which we pair a presumed Oscar feature with a presumed Razzie feature to discuss movies from 2020 with a (hopefully) positive critical eye. Ep 48Sound of Metal, 365 Days: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff continue with their Oscars/Razzies segment "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)". Our awards season choice this wee is Sound of Metal starring Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci. We had many positive things to say about this incredibly moving film. Our potential Razzie film is the apparently popular 365 Days, a Polish-Italian movie primarily in English that is Beauty and the Beast meets 50 Shades of Gray with enough sexual content to make quarantine interesting. Based on a trilogy of books, it was #1 on Netflix in June 2020 and two sequels are on the way despite a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't watch with your family. Ep 47Mank, Capone: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

This week on the pod John, Dave & Jeff discuss David Fincher's brilliantly directed and acted Mank, streaming on Netflix starring Gary Oldman as the screenwriter of Citizen Kane. We then switch gears to try redeeming Capone, written and directed by Josh Trank, starring Tom Hardy as dementia-riddled Al Capone when he's nearing his final days on earth and neurosyphilis makes him poop the bed. That's available for free with subscription on Amazon Prime. This is week 4 of our segment "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film", where we look back at a presumed Oscar nominee and a presumed Razzie nominee to highlight the year 2020(ish) in (stream-able) film. E

In week 3 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film" Oscars/Razzies series, co-host Jeff used his backup audio again because the guy just doesn't know how to use an audio interface. What the hell, man. Anyway, we discuss Aaron Sorkin's surprisingly grounded, balanced and captivating film The Trial of the Chicago 7, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and a whole bunch of Tony Award winners (Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Frank Langella, Alex Sharp) and Emmy winners (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Strong). Ep 45Palm Springs, The Last Thing He Wanted: It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)

E

In our second episode of our Oscars/Razzies mashup, we prove how professional we are by using co-host Jeff's backup phone voice memo audio because his file got royally screwed during our recording. Deepest apologies to you, and may God have mercy on his soul. We begin with a discussion of indie darling Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and JK Simmons, available now on Hulu, and how enjoyable, moving, funny and rewatchable this film is. We then discuss a potential Razzie nominee (I'd bet against a nomination, but we'll see), The Last Thing He Wanted, starring Anne Hathaway, Rosie Perez, Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe and Toby Jones. It was directed and co-written by Dee Rees, her first movie since Mudbound in 2017, bought in 2018 by Netflix, adapted from a successful Joan Didion, yet somehow got terrible reviews. E

In the first episode of our special series where we pair a presumed & stream-able Oscar nominee with a presumed & stream-able Razzie nominee, we look back at a pair of big budget films with very different tones. We first discuss Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods, which was a much needed summer release on Netflix with the civil rights protests of 2020 still in full swing. We then discuss Dolittle, the $175 million movie starring Robert Downey Jr., streaming not on HBO Max, that some bettors have sweeping the Razzies this year. Was it really that bad? Ep 42Not Family Friendly XMas: Bad Santa, The Ref, Anna and the Apocalypse

E

This week on the pod Dave, John and Jeff discuss out Christmas Movies that may not be family friendly but deserve their conversation. We open with a debate about Bad Santa: the gimmick vs the satire, ultimately agreeing that it's a funny movie with lots to talk about. We then segue to The Ref starring Dennis Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis. This film is not family friendly since it's about a robbery and kidnapping on Christmas Eve, not because of the Kevin Spacey stuff. It's funny, but does it go far enough? We wrap up with Anna and the Apocalypse, a little-movie--musical-that-could indie picked up by Amazon Prime, which is about a zombie apocalypse in a small Scottish town that is also a Christmas movie. Ep 41Family Friendly XMas: Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

E

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John discuss family friendly Christmas movies. To be clear, we are not family friendly. Our show is a drinking game and we have an Aussie and a co-host from NJ, so we curse while talking about Miracle on 34th Street. It happens. As for the episode, after discussing the Disney slate of Star Wars and Marvel shows vs. the sht show that was AT&T & HBOMax coercing WarnerBros into their craziness, we open the show talking about Home Alone, segueing to the Miracle on 34th Street, the old one with Natalie Wood, not the one with the girl from Matilda and the guy from Jurassic Park who says "DAMN!" at the end of a famous Spielberg punch-in, then we wrap up with a talk about National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which is so goddamn good. Ep 40Films of 1991: JFK, Boyz n the Hood, Drop Dead Fred

E

This week on the pod, we discuss how 1991 was a surprisingly good year in film before diving into three standout features. We begin our discussion with JFK, the movie with the ridiculous cast and apparently a director's cut that's longer. We then move to the incredible Boyz n the Hood, an absolute knockout of a movie that everyone should see. Ep 39Films of 2014: Ex Machina, Nightcrawler, Noah

E

This week on the pod, Dave shocks the fck out of John and Jeff and says he liked the movie Noah. A lot. He really dug the film, which is good since we're a positive pod, it just really caught us off guard! Before that shocker, we begin with a quick review of the movies that made noise in 2014 before getting into our deep dive. We start with a discussion of Ex Machina, which technically premiered in 2014 although it was released in 2015... whatever, this movie is awesome. We then discuss Nightcrawler starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed, wondering if it missed something that could have taken it to the next level. Finally, we wrap up with Harvard grad Darren Aronofsky's Noah: was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 38Films of 1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, Death Race 2000

E

This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff recorded and remixed our first live stream on Twitch! We discussed a few news stories, primarily Wonder Woman 1984 heading to HBO Max, then have an engaged conversation with some all time movies, two for their monumental achievement and one for its offensiveness. We begin with Cuckoo's Nest starring Jack Nicholson, directed by Milos Forman. We then head over to Dog Day Afternoon which is just so surprisingly incredible. If you like Al Pacino and you've never seen Dog Day, go f your ignorance. Just kidding, just watch it on HBO Max then listen to this podcast. Lastly, we discuss Death Race 2000, the movie Stallone made before Rocky and the one that almost sunk his nonexistent career. While delightfully self-aware and risky with a Hunger Games-type of premise, it certainly gave itself a lot of hurdles to jump: was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. We are joined by guest co-host Jeff Ronan of the pod 'And Almost Starring' to try to redeem Batman Forever: was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 35Halloween LIVE! A Nightmare on Elm Street,Neon Maniacs, Candyman, Jason X

E

This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff are joined LIVE (via Facebook Live) by horror film makers and fans Marcus Slabine and Ryan Wilson. Jeff was so excited he clipped his microphone almost every time he opened his mouth. Fortunately, Dave has dealt with his sh*t before and edited a clean version of the episode. Not 'clean' as in no cursing- there's a sh*t ton of cursing. On the pod, we discuss Halloween movies, with much of the discussion centered on A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), Neon Maniacs (1986), Candyman (1992) then a rousing debate about Jason X (2001), which is the one where hockey mask-wearing Jason Vorhees kills people in Space in the year 2455: was it really that bad? E

This week on the pod Jeff, John and Dave discuss some of our favorite parts of 1993 movies before diving into re-watches of three fantastic films. We begin with the Fugitive, or is it US Marshalls? Is it Harrison Ford or Wesley Snipes? Ohhh it's the Fugitive, you can tell from the famous dam sequence. This movie is awesome. Really holds up. We then discuss Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: how young should parents start their kids on this movie? Finally, we take it upon ourselves to redeem Last Action Hero, a critical and commercial bomb starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and everybody who ever owed him a favor: was it really that bad? This week on the pod we get a heavy dose of teen angst, 1950's style, as James Dean tears us all apart in Rebel Without a Cause. We then go international for one of the first films to publish a spoiler warning in the french thriller Diabolique. Closing it out we wrap our elongated fingers around our beers and dive into Bride of the Monster in Bela Lugosi's final speaking role. Was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 31Films of 1976: Taxi Driver, Network, Stay Hungry

E

This week on the pod we talk about some movies! Two of these films are among the best films of all time. Stay Hungry, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who's name I just copied and pasted from Google, Jeff Bridges and Sally Field, is not. Our co-host, Dave, who has seen Solo at least 5 times and Cats at least once, had never seen Taxi Driver or Network. We start with his take on Taxi Driver and how the timeless first-person narrative and political undertones keep this Scorsese classic as the standard bearer. We then talk about how ridiculously good Network is- the satire, the humor, the relentlessness of all of the actors and characters. We most certainly talk about how both of these films are extremely relevant and an immediate re-watch by all is recommended. Doctor's orders. We wrap up with a discussion of Stay Hungry: Was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 28Films of 1997: Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown, Speed 2: Cruise Control

E

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave & John discuss the film year 1997. Lots of boats in 1997. The Lost World? Boat. Speed 2? Boat. Tomorrow Never Dies? Let's just say the Royal Navy is involved. Titanic? Iceberg. We then pivot to discussing film by two master directors, perhaps the greatest of their generation: Quentin Tarantino's oft-overlooked Jackie Brown, and Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece Boogie Nights. Yes, masterpiece. I said it. He was a 27 year old, film school drop-out who dressed like Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets (1997 reference), and he was a master. We finish by talking about Speed 2: Cruise Control, which has a 4% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.9 on imdb. Was it really that bad? Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. We then discuss Spike Jonze’s Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix, to see how well the pacing and tone of the film’s futuristic love story hold up.
