Ep 215Reptile (2023) mini review, The Crown S6 pt.1, Through A Glass Darkly: Films of 1961

E

This week John gives a mini review of Grant Singer’s Reptile (2023) starring Benicio Del Toro, Alicia Silverstone, and Justin Timberlake, after which the boys head back to 1961 to talk about how God is a spider in Ingmar Bergman’s Through A Glass Darkly (1961). Four actors, a three-time Oscar winning director, a two-time Oscar winning cinematographer, Sweden, beer… Let’s drink and talk movies! Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema. Ep 214’The Marvels’ & ’The Killer’ mini reviews + ’The Year of Living Dangerously’: Films of 1982

E

This week the boys join Mel Gibson and Sigourney weaver as they head to Indonesia with Peter Weir’s “The Year of Living Dangerously”. Of course, the real standout is Linda Hunt in an Oscar winning (and history making) performance as Billy. This fantastic movie is about western print journalism in the age of eastern political chaos (sound familiar???????), and it stands out in the year 1982. Also listen in to hear John’s mini review of David Fincher’s “The Killer” starring Michael Fassbender, now on Netflix, and Dave’s minuscule review of “The Marvels”, which is Marvel’s lowest grossing (and one of the lowest rated) opening to date despite fantastic audience reviews. Ep 212The Holdovers (2023) mini review + Point Break: Films of 1991

E

This week the boys’ human spirit is alive as John turns into a meat waffle to give a mini review of The Holdovers, Dave’s gotta go down with a gripe about Hulu and The X-Files, and Jeff takes the skin off the chicken to give us some 1991 context before we discuss re-watching Point Break, Kathryn Bigelow’s original IP that would inspire the Fast & Furious franchise, without a doubt. If you’d rather surf then work and you don’t want to sell meth like that other surf crew, put on some president maps, avoid the vault, and you’ll be tubing all season long! Dave and John break the Quantum Leap rules and travel outside their own lifetimes to experience Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo from 1958. Ep 209Martin Scorsese’s After Hours: Films of 1985

E

1985. Continuing with our random year generator, ahead of Killers of the Flower Moon, the boys head to Martin Scorsese's mid-80s crisis of faith when he hated Reagan, film studios, and couldn't get The Last Temptation of Christ made. So he made After Hours, a Hitchcock-inspired puzzle of a neo-noir shotgun indie that defines what a midlife crisis can be for a film maker. It's also apparently a comedy! We discuss our favorite Marty's, his conversations about the state of cinema, and this surprising film. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema. Ep 190Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023) + WGA week 2 + stores locking up deodorant

E

This Mother’s Day weekend Dave, John, and Jeff gush about Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, the sensational second feature film by writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig, adapted from the 1970 novel by Judy Blume. Starring Abby Ryder Fortson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, as three generations of ladies in this coming-of-age teen dreamed about accepting religion, friends, and the tribulations of adolescence, it’s honestly hard to talk about this movie without gushing about it, so please crack open a beer and get into the discussion with us! We also gripe about producers messing over writers despite having (and losing) billions of dollars, as well as pharmacy stores a la CVS and Duane Reade locking up all of their supply but then their staff being nowhere when you need anything… something has to be done before Amazon swallows them up! Ep 189Guardians of the Galax Vol. 3 + Writers’ Strike Thoughts

E

This week Jeff, John, and Dave discuss Guardians vol. 3. After we make some jokes and talk about the Writer’s Strike, we drink beer and try to keep it positive, having fun talking about movies! With writer/director James Gunn back and flying mostly solo, he gives the team the send-off we may want and deserve even if Marvel won’t let him follow through on. Rocket Raccoon gets his backstory, Peter Quill shares the spotlight after all the stuff from 1 and 2, Mantis and Drax continue their awesome chemistry from the Holiday Special, Kevin Bacon doesn’t get a single mention, Gamora and Nebula are still doing their thing, Adam Warlock and his… foster mom?… make a comedic appearance after drinking some of that Russel Crowe wine from Thor: Love & Thunder, and the villain does a great job as the 12th Marvel villain who wants to fix the world, not just destroy it (the writer of this didn’t read the comics). Ep 188Sisu (2022-ish) with film’s star Jack Doolan!!

E

This week we welcome one of the stars of Sisu (2022) Jack Doolan to discuss this incredible, fun, kick-ass film that just released wide in the USA, and man does it pack more than a few punches in its tight 91 minutes. Jack plays a Nazi soldier who operates as the tank gunner and second in command to a brutal SS officer (Aksel Hennie) attempting to rob a rugged gold miner (Jorma Tommila) in the Finnish wilderness in 1944. That was a really bad decision by them. While this movie doesn’t shy away from the brutality of WWII, it’s fun, funny, badass, and gives you something to root for. Directed by Jamari Helander, this movie crushed at TIFF and got distributed by Lionsgate and it just rules. It’s in over 1,000 screens so get your friends to see it as soon as possible! Ep 181Scream VI (2023) with Guest Marcus Slabine: New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff and Dave are joined by horror expert and genre filmmaker Marcus Slabine to discuss Scream VI, the sequel to Scream V that asks the vital question, “Is there more nostalgia we could have squeezed out of Scream V?” Set in the Toronto version of NYC at the fictional Blackmore University, more Ghostface copycats are targeting the same people that were targeted in Scream V… but why? Are they just horror fans writing their own bloody script? You’ll have to watch to find out. We discuss. Ep 178Cocaine Bear (2023): New Movie Discussion with Guest Ben Grimes

E

This week the boys are joined by Ben Grimes, filmmaker and punk rocker who drinks Tequila drinks out of a Hydro Flask to keep it colder for longer and prevent the ice from melting LIKE A GENIUS AND A PRO. They discuss the new Elizabeth Banks-directed movie "18 Characters Develop Their Back Story in the Woods of Georgia". That's actually a Ben joke that we laughed at in the episode, we even laughed when John or he brought it back up later, but we all had a fun time in the theater, as did our audiences. So go see it. Or, if you don't, it'll be a rental in about a month, like M3GAN, also covered by us, which is not on Peacock literally the month after it came out in theaters. 2023, man. Anyway, just rent it at home in a month, pee during the back story parts, and have fun when the bear starts taking off limbs, because apparently all cocaine does to big animals is make them angry and possessed like a Floridian on bath salts cut with cocaine. Unlike me, who just talks really, really fast and gets really good at foosball and pool. Don't believe us? Follow us on the socials and reach out to us. Ep 177All Quiet on the Western Front (2022): New Anti-War Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff, John, and Dave discuss All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), the WWI anti-war movie that is the exception to the “stop making WWI & WWII movies” rule. From now on, no more. There are plenty out there, and we were stuck discussing Ant-Man and WWI this week. Ant-Man was the fourth most interesting character in his own movie (Boba Fett much?) and there are like 10 current wars going on right now. Come on. At least the film making was brilliant and it was a great “war sucks” movie that reminded us Nazis are fucking idiots, on top of everything else they are, and their minds were rat-fucked by assholes selling propaganda from their servant-adorning mansions. We discuss. John saw it in theaters, which is cool. Dave and Jeff did not. Netflix, amiright? Cast/Crew: Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson, Ian Stokell, Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, Daniel Brühl, Erich Maria Remarque, James Friend, Volker Bartelmann, Sven Budelmann, Christian M. Ep 176Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (2023): New Movie Discussion

E

This week John, Dave and Jeff thank the Philippines for accepting our podcast as one of their top shows in Entertainment by discussing the first film of Marvel's Phase 5... apparently. While Ant-Man and The Wasp struggle for screen time in this part III, complete with talking raccoon jokes and scored by Paul Rudd's Scott Lang's audio book. And lots of size jokes. We drink beer and discuss with a focus on positivity! Additional Cast/Crew: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonathan Majors, Bill Murray, David Dastmalchian, Katy M. Ep 175Knock at the Cabin (2023): Beer + New Movie Discussion

E

This week the boys discuss M. Night Shyamalan's latest directorial feature, Knock at the Cabin (2023), which stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Rubert Grint. While Night had some source material to work with in Paul Tremblay's book "The Cabin at the End of the World", he changed the ending, so he was able to keep some surprise in how it's going to end. Not sure our co-host John liked that, he might have liked it more than his significant other, which is new for him. Jeff also made Dave edit some stuff out about the Chinese Spy Balloon because he ran his mouth about something he knew nothing about. However, since this movie has to do with the apocalypse, and we might have Russia and China both occupying land at the same time, maybe this movie will age well! Ep 174Aftersun (2022) w/ Guest Tina Nikolova: New Movie Discussion

E

This week the boys are joined by actress Tina Nikolova to drink some whiskey and beer and discuss Aftersun (2022), writer/director (and multiple-BAFTA nominee) Charlotte Wells' personal feature film starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People, The Lost Daughter, Gladiator 2) and newcomer scene-stealer Frankie Corio. The film is very Scottish, and those UK-ers must really love their lottery because The National Lottery sponsored this. Apparently they sponsor a lot. The film is about a woman reflecting back on a vacation she took with her young father when she was young, reliving moments and flashes through home videos that capture more about her father than she was able to see as a child. Powerful stuff! Additional Cast/Crew: Celia Rowlson-Hall, Sally Messham, Spike Fearn, Harry Perdios, Ruby Thompson, Kayleigh Coleman, Barry Jenkins, Oliver Coates, Gregory Oke. Ep 173Missing (2022): Positive New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff & Dave went to another fun January thriller in the cinema before talking the walk without co-host John. Missing (2022) is standalone sequel to Searching (2022) and is a "desktop" movie, or screen-based thriller. With a bigger budget and time to create another simple mystery thriller completely enriched by it's premise, Missing is the second movie in three weeks (M3GAN) to know what it is and give it to us exactly as we wanted yet in a way we somehow almost didn't know we wanted it. Cast/Crew: Nicholas D. Johnson, Will Merrick, Sev Ohanian, Aneesh Chaganty, Tim Griffin, Nia Long, Storm Rein, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Megan Suri, Lisa Yamada, Daniel Henney, Joaquim de Almeida, Lauren B. Ep 172Women Talking (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week we drink whiskey and beer and keep it positive as we discuss Women Talking (2022), the Critic's Choice Award-winning film that helps ignite one hell of a conversation. Based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews, writer/director Sarah Polley guides an incredible ensemble cast to some incredible heights. The film takes place over the course of three days and two nights in an agrarian Mennonite society where every woman- and most girls- has experienced a sexual assault and a gaslighting about it (it was a ghost, it was the devil, you made it up... infuriating). The women meet in a barn to discuss their options. Produced by Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt, amongst others, the mostly-female cast is led by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, McDormand, Judith Ivey, Kate Hallett, Sheila McCarthy, August Winter, and Ben Wishaw. Ep 171Babylon (2022): Was It Really That Bad?

E

This week John, Dave, and Jeff discuss Babylon (2022), the film by writer/director Damien Chazelle that reminds us why we love going to see 3 1/2-hour long movies filled with extravagance and debauchery in the theater at Christmas. Critics have been split, audiences gave it a shrug… was it really that bad? Ep 170M3GAN (2023): New Movie Discussion + Beer - Negativity

E

This week John, Dave & Jeff went with the teenagers to see M3GAN, the film that apparently makes young people in the theater want to watch Twitch, check their Snaps, record the screen, vape, and yell at each other for the duration. Lots of “bathroom” breaks, too. If only M3GAN would jump out of the screen and parent THESE kids by kicking their asses. The movie is about Allison Williams not wanting to parent her niece, so she develops a doll designed to make Mark Zuckerberg look like Winnie the Pooh. It’s not terrifying, but it’s spooky and thrilling enough with a skosh of humor to justify it’s $30mill opening weekend. Ep 169Triangle of Sadness (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

After discussing the upcoming summer 2023 slate of big picture releases, the boys discuss Jeff’s #2 movie of 2022, Triangle of Sadness, written and directed by Ruben Östlund (Force Majeure, The Square). This Swedish film spoken primarily in English won Östlund his second Palme d’Or and is a social satire on wealth, classism, beauty obsession, and political ideology. Co-starring Woody Harrelson as the alcoholic Marxist captain of a luxury yacht, be prepared to see the most gutturally disturbing dinner scene since Stand By Me… maybe worse. Ep 167Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) + Beer + Rants about Critics

E

After Jeff, John, and Dave rant about how critics are doing film-goers a great disservice (Owen Gleiberman, click-baiting Avatar haters), the boys discuss Avatar: The Way of Water. Despite this movie having pretty favorable reviews among critics and incredibly favorable reviews among audiences, it pains us to be haters since we love movies so much and people aren't supporting new films the way we used to. It's led Dave to drink. He didn't get drunk because he turned 50, it's because an actual critic called Avatar: TWOF a "Smurfahontas Stodgeathon", which is horesheet. And because it eases the pain of being alive as a human, as opposed to a Na'vi. Anyway, our job is to keep it positive, and we mostly do! Sam Mendes made a British nostalgia film starring Olivia Colman, so we decided to drink some beer and whiskey and talk about it! Co-starring breakout star Michael Ward, Colin Firth, and Tobey Jones, Empire of Light takes place on the English seaside in a small town with a beautifully elaborate cinema struggling for audiences. The cast works at the theater and yearns for connection in the turbulent age of Margaret Thatcher's England, 1980. Crack a tinny and listen along!
