Ep 165The Whale (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff, John, and Dave drink beer and discuss seeing The Whale in Dolby Cinema, with the aspect ration of a 1950s newscast, and how the film had a serious impact on us. We also discuss the blocking, the cinematography, the music, and the incredible depth written by Samuel D. Hunter, who adapted his 2012 off-Broadway play for the screenplay. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Brendan Fraser in one hell of a comeback performance portraying a 600-lb man trying to right some wrongs in his life. Assisted by some incredible performances including fall 2022 star Hong Chau (The Menu), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Jurassic World), this movie packs a punch. Crack open a beer and let's discuss. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Hosts: Dave Green, Jeff Ostermueller, John Say. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 164Violent Night - New Christmas Movie Discussion

E

Jeff is away on special assignment so John and Dave reach into their magic sacks and pull out tickets to the new Christmas movie Violent Night starring David Harbour, John Leguizamo and Beverly D'Angelo. Is it good? Is it gory? Is it fun? Are home alone style traps deadly? Ok that last one is a hard yes. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Hosts: Dave Green, John Say. Ep 163Bones and All (2022) + Beer: Life’s Never Dully! New Movie Discussion

E

This week, after Jeff's audio dropouts chill the hell out, he & Dave cover for John's sorry ass to discuss Bones and All, the new Timothée Chalomet, Taylor Russell (Waves), and Luca Guadagnino film (Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria (2018)) that will make you hungrier than The Menu, more nostalgic than The Fabelmans, feeling sweeter than The Banshees of Inisherin, and more discombobulated than Crimes of the Future. All of those are movies we've covered recently, by the way. Also, this is our third Mark Rylance movie of the year after The Outfit & The Phantom of the Open! We love Mark. For the love of Mark Rylance. We also drank a bunch of whiskey and beer and hope you enjoy! E

This week, John is REPLACED by Matt from the Matt and Mark Movie Show to discuss The Menu (at 14:00), the new Mark Mylod (Succession, GoT) thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nicholas Hoult, oh and John Leguizamo and Judith Light (Who’s The Boss?), oh and Tony Winner Reed Birney and Oscar nominee Janet McTeer and movie-stealer Hong Chau (Downsizing, Watchmen), oh and Mark St. Cyr (HWM:TM:TS, Marshall), oh and so many more amazing memorable people. Ep 161The Fabelmans (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the show the boys drink beer and gush about The Fabelmans, Stephen Spielberg's autobiographical take on how crazy it is he got rejected from USC film school. Honestly, I'm surprised they got so giddy. One of the co-hosts (John) was so touched by it he said "aww" a bunch of times the way someone does when they see a bunny. Not the Fatal Attraction bunny. The film is sweet and made brilliantly. So if you're on your way home from drinking, or are drinking alone by yourself, and want to hear some guys drink and talk about the Fabelmans, we'd be honored to share your attention. This episode is for you! Ep 160Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: New Movie Discussion + Beer

E

We drink beers and talk about movies! After Jeff, John, and Dave get their gripes out discussing Disney+ with Ads, AMC's ridiculous lines that are costing them money, and people peeing during 9 AM screenings of 3 hour movies, they discuss Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We discuss the usual things, whether Marvel should have let Ryan Coogler do his own thing and not set up any future anythings, and how incredible the fight choreographer did. Ep 159The Banshees of Inisherin (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave, & John discuss The Banshees of Inisherin, writer/director Martin McDonagh's first Irish-set feature film. The Irishman won an Oscar for the 2004 short film Six Shooter, which was set in Ireland, and he wrote lots of plays set in- and of the coast of- Ireland, but In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards... It was time to return to the land of the Eire. Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan- all Irish- star in a tale of friendship, conflict, loneliness, legacy, and feckin' pub life. This movie is goddamn good. Go see it, then grab a beer and listen- or watch on YouTube- along with us! Ep 158Armageddon Time (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week John, Dave, & Jeff discuss Armageddon Time, the mostly autobiographical account of writer/director James Gray about the first few months of his 6th grade school year in 1980 Queens, NYC. We drink beer and talk about how the film discusses privilege, capitalism, family values, friendship, adversity, Anthony Hopkins, and being a mensch. We were also going to discuss The Banshees of Inisherin but John lives in LA and apparently thieves are stealing parts of cars to resell on the black market. Fcking chop shop mfers. So just Armageddon Time this week! It's a prescient film and we hope you talking about it with us on the socials! Ep 157Black Adam (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

39% Rotten Tomatoes score, 90% Audience score. What?? I doubt the fans really gave this a 90... pollsters are in a tough place. But our job is to try to talk positively about films, so that's what we do! We drink beer when we don't. This movie was kind of three good movie ideas in one, so listen to see how we ultimately came out on this one. Ep 156TÁR (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff, John, & Dave talk about TÁR, the new Cate Blanchett film bound for the awards season slog. Written & directed by Todd Field (In The Bedroom, Little Children), the movie follows fictional Lydia Tár (Blanchett), one of the greatest living conductors (and composers?), and the first female conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. The film touches on prescient thematic issues that will test most of its audience, and Blanchett rocks your socks off. Grab a sixer and hang out with us while we talk about Tár! Ep 155Amsterdam (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the pod Jeff, John, and Dave discuss Amsterdam, the new David O. Russell movie with an incredible cast and an important, inspired-by-true-events story filmed with little to no tone, which is potentially sinking the expensive adult dramedy feature genre. We drink beers and discuss! But more about that, well, streamers will pick them up, but unless the movie is incredibly good and awe-inspiring, matched with some fortunate timing, it's not making it's $80 million back ($150 mill with ad money factored in). Additional Cast/Creatives: Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Alessandro Nivola, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Mathias Schoenaerts, Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, Robert DeNiro, Zoe Saldana, Taylor Swift, Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Hosts: Dave Green, Jeff Ostermueller, John Say. Ep 154Blonde (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff, Dave, and John discuss Blonde (2022), the new Andrew Dominik film starring Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane aka Marilyn Monroe, currently streaming on Netflix. Since the trailer was released and an NC-17 rating was revealed, skepticism arose. Press screenings led to reviewers writing scathing pieces through clenched teeth, many of which had valid points. We're a podcast that attempts to keep it positive, and we kind of succeed here! We hope you listen and reach out with your thoughts, agreeing or disagreeing. Ep 153Don’t Worry Darling (2022): New Movie Discussion + Beer

E

This week on the pod Jeff, John, & Dave drink beer to help us discuss Don't Worry Darling, the new film which has characters drinking like Don Draper and spitting like Mr. Ed. Oh, we kid. There's been a very strange marketing campaign, which we're not sure was intentional or not, but there are good ideas in the film, we think. We discuss! Ep 152The Great Escape (1963): Should Have Seen That By Now

E

John & Dave drink whiskey and beer to re-watch an American classic that Jeff hadn't seen before, The Great Escape! Directed by John Sturges, this Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner classic is long but mighty, with some incredible detail, and is grounded by a surprisingly lurid tone for a drama with serious subject matter that you never see anymore. We drink a whole lot of beer and whiskey and discuss, once Jeff finally gets done ranting about his hatred for one-word movie titles. Seriously, Dave went for a pee break and came back... he was still going and John joined in! Crazy. Ep 151Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder (2003): What Else Have They Done?

E

This marks the first episode of our new series, What Else Have They Done? For avid Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer) fans, and followers of Quentin Tarantino's infamous movie lists, this film is a legendary exemplar of the murder mystery genre, and it's currently streaming on Hulu. John's cinematography teacher and fancy film school unknowingly inspired this selection. If you haven't seen it before, holy crap, get ready to be rocked. Set in a rural South Korean town, inspired by the 1986-1991 Hwaseong Serial Murders, Song Kang-ho (Parasite) leads a team of investigators and detectives who are driven crazy as they try to solve a series of seemingly unsolvable rape-murders. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, this movie gives you your favorite horror tropes in a unique hodgepodge way: rain, darkness, suspicious characters, hilarious comedy, slow burn, jump scares, unhelpful police department, and more. Ep 149Breaking (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Breaking, the new film, based on a true story, starring John Boyega as a US Marine veteran who demands the VA pay him his disability checks, which have been held up by bureaucratic crap that the US military doesn't want to confront ever, ever. Therefore, Boyega's Brian Brown-Easley makes a bold decision to make his situation known at the risk of his own life. We discussed the incredibly important content of the film as compared to the final product, which was directed by relative new-comer to feature film directing, Abi Damaris Corbin, who co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah. Boyega also co-exec produced, and the supporting cast is led by Michael K. Williams in one of his final performances. RIP! Composed by frequent Jordan Peele collaborator Michael Abels, the film was also co-produced by Euphoria's Sam Levinson. Ep 148Samaritan (2022): New Movie Discussion with Beer!

E

This week on the pod Dave, John, & Jeff try to keep it positive while we discuss Samaritan, now available to stream on Amazon Prime. This movie stars Sylvester Stallone and is a lukewarm take on the superhero comic book genre. Luckily, if you like Sly, he's pretty good in this. Ep 147Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

Today on the pod we drink beer and discuss George Miller's passion project, Three Thousand Years of Longing, a movie where an Australian filmmaker takes an Istanbul-set, pre-Islamic Arabic tale, and creates a piece of fiction for Western audience. Well, worldwide audiences, likely, and the Djinn (Idris Elba) is very romantic! Tilda Swinton is back at it, there are sweeping scenes of fantasy, stories come to life... moviegoers are divided on the picture, but we're happy we saw it on the big screen. We discuss! Ep 146Conan the Barbarian (1982): Should Have Seen That By Now feat. Mark Monstroski

E

This week Jeff, John, & Dave welcome Mark Monstroski of our sister podcast, The Matt And Mark Movie Podcast, which is now trending in Saudi Arabia and Portugal! Mark is a huge fan of Conan and all fun movies, really. This episode features lots of talk about practical effects vs. current CGI trends, how good story-telling on film in a sword-and-sandals romp like Conan makes any lack of realism totally work, and an understanding that while more and more movies get made every year, the bar is very high thanks to the incredible legacy left before us! We drink a lot, too. 55 buzzes! That's a record. That means Mark holds the #1 and #2 spots of most-buzzed episodes on our show. He's gotta come back for Frozen II! Conan the Barbarian is directed by John Milius, written by John Milius and Oliver Stone, based on the novel by Robert E. Howard, and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow, and Sandahl Bergman. Ep 145Emily the Criminal (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

Starring and Produced by Aubrey Plaza, Emily the Criminal is a little movie with a lot of guts, some thrill, and a compelling story that begs you to ask if you'd make the same choices! Jeff's audio kind of sucked in this one because he's a "f-ing amateur" (his words), but Dave saved his ass again. Also, John was on ayahuasca or something so he missed this week. Listen to us drink some beer and talk about this film! We make a lot of movie references, too. E

This week Dave, John & Jeff discuss Vengeance, B.J. Novak's self-referential film take on an affluent writer trying to be a prominent voice in culture by exploiting stories from rural people for their urban gain. In a good way! We discuss the themes brought up, the characters he meets along the way, Texas, and whether he was able to pull it off in that "what if Ginsberg and Kerouac were wealthy narcissists?" kind of way. Ep 143Bullet Train (2022): Beer + New Movie Discussion

E

This week Jeff, John & Dave discuss Bullet Train, which finally came to theaters after months of the exact same trailer appearing at the front of every single cinema release. This movie is directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2) and stars Brad Pitt, who's just trying to have as much fun in silly life as possible, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, Brian Tyree Henry, Logan Lerman, Zazie Beetz, Bad Bunny, and a few surprise cameos. On the whole, this movie is fun, f the critics who think it's 'smug' and let it to a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, grab some popcorn, watch with friends and loved ones, this is a fun action comedy with dramatic elements, Kung Fu influence and fighting sequences... just listen to our ep and hear us go through it! Ep 142The Gray Man (2022): New Movie Discussion with Beer

E

This week John, Dave & Jeff discuss The Gray Man, one of Netflix's biggest commitments of all time with a reported $200 million budget. Based on the 2009 novel of the same name, this project originally had Brad Pitt and James Gray attached, then Chris McQuarrie and Charlize Theron, it finally came to the Russo Brothers and the duo of Ryan Gosling and a wannabe Peter Sellers-esque, mustachioed Chris Evans. The cast is fleshed out by Alfre Woodard, Ana de Armas, and Billy Bob Thornton, and the script isn't fleshed out, at all. It's dead. But the movie was very fun, lots of action... so much action... so we gave it a watch, drank beer, and talked about it! Ep 141Gattaca (1997): Should Have Seen That By Now

E

This week Jeff makes Dave & John re-watch 90s Sci-Fi thriller (?) Gattaca since he had never seen it! Lots of beer drinking, too. We had consumed a bunch before we even started recording. Anyway, it's on Netflix and it gave us both Jude Law and Maya Hawke, plus it's so 90s. What a premise! Ethan Hawke pretends to be Jude Law so that he can maybe go to space some day. There's something about swimming against his brother, I think the line "I never saved anything for the swim back" that, you, didn't quite have the sentimental impact as "They called me Mr. Glass!", or something. Hell of a cast. Andrew Niccol wrote/directed. Cast/Creatives: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, with Jude Law, Loren Dean, Ernest Borgnine, Gore Vidal, Blair Underwood, Tony Shalhoub, Maya Rudolph, and Alan Arkin, Sławomir Idziak, Michael Nyman, Danny DeVito produced through Jersey Films. Ep 140NOPE (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

John, Dave & Jeff saw Nope, and we gave it three (or six?) thumbs up! We start spoiler free before getting into it, we have lots of questions and get into those as well, so tune in whether you loved the movie or didn't! One thing we can agree on, that is one tough, tough way to die. There's a shot of some death that is... actually two different sequences featuring multiple deaths that are really tough ways to go. Ep 139Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week Dave, Jeff and John went to the cinema to check out another limited release film, which hopefully will pick up some steam! It's charming. A cleaning lady with a dream, 1957 London, heads to Dior in Paris, wants to buy a frock. If you live near a local cinema, check this one out. Leslie Manville deserves her moment! Ep 138Thor: Love and Thunder (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the pod, John, Jeff & Dave welcome guest Chris Hurte (The Mandalorian asst. editor) to discuss Thor: Love and Thunder, and where Marvel is heading in Phase 4. Thor is back! Jane is back! Loki is not, but Matt Damon is still giving him life on the Orpheum circuit! Christian Bale stars as Gorr the God Hunter, doing some strange shadow resurrecting and a lot of hours in the makeup chair, on a mission to kill Gods. And guess what? Thor... is a God! So that's a tough bind for him. Also, Jane is going by The Mighty Thor, and Thor is surprisingly OK with sharing the title. He's come a long way. And Valkyrie and Korg are back, as are some screaming goats. Fun. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Hosts: John Say, Dave Green, Jeff Ostermueller. Baz Luhrmann, the legendary director with a unique visual and audio style. Elvis, the king of rock and roll. Ep 136The Black Phone (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

This week on the pod Jeff, John & Dave say F you to the partisan, hypocritical, power hungry, regressive, contradictory Supreme Court by discussing a really fun genre film! This movie has that 70s-era slow burn horror feel to match the setting- 1978 in North Denver- and enough suspense and jump scares to possibly make this a rewatch-able flick! Fantastic cast, fantastic crew, go check this out. Screw those hoity-toity critics, who are mostly warm on the film but with a little condescension. This is definitely worth it. We discuss. It's by Joe Hill & the team that brought you Doctor Strange and Sinister. And the director liked one of Dave's tweets! So, see it. Ep 135The Phantom of the Open (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

Jeff, John and Dave celebrate the renaissance of golf with a giant F-U to the LIV golf tour. Just kidding! We talk about an incredibly charming movie that is more character study than sports movie, yet with all the perks of both. Mark Rylance, perhaps the greatest living English-speaking actor, paired with a luminous Sally Hawkins & antagonized by a yuppy Rhys Ifans, star in this Craig Roberts film about a crane driver (operator) in a working class coastal English town who decides to take up golf by entering The British Open in 1976. Ep 134Jurassic World: Dominion - New Movie Review and Discussion

E

A podcast episode 65 million and 29 years in the making. And with so many glitches you'd think we're covering Gremlins. John, Dave & Jeff ignore all the warnings, disable the fences and wander blindly into the new Jurassic World Dominion starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Isabella Sermon, Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, B.D. Wong and pretty much everyone else in the world. Ep 132Crimes of the Future (2022): New Movie Discussion

E

Dave & Jeff drink beer and discuss Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg's first feature film directed in 8 years, his first script in 23 years, and it begs the question: Is a future where surgery is sex worth it? Should we go there? Or should we avoid it entirely. Intimacy, pain, the long-term side effects of self-medicating and the plastic waste bins that we are, we all are, in truth, no better than our local waste bin... so chew it up, grow some useless organs, have some of the old sex and listen to our episode! Viggo Mortensen is back with DC for the 4th time, Léa Seydoux will be in any movie as long as it'll premiere at Cannes, Kristen Stewart decided she was tired of playing princess roles, and did that mother just suffocate her child? Is a medical degree is really key if you want to advance your art career? Should we eat the purple bars? So many questions, happily asked. Ep 130Men (2022): New Film Discussion

E

This week on the show, Dave left John and Jeff to record, edit and mix an episode with minimal professional experience, and we did! We did it. Dave's rediscovering his love for Cutter beer, Tim Tams, and Australian courtesy in the land of his youth. We discuss the horror genre-subverting film Men (2022), writer/director Alex Garland's third feature (Ex Machina, Annihilation, the Hulu limited series Devs). Garland made some bold choices to explore a woman's (Jessie Buckley) grief while she escapes her hometown of London for the Cotswolds in the English countryside, where she finds herself surrounded by men (Rory Kinnear) who are not only capable, but seemingly intent on threatening her while handing her the blame for their lust. We discuss the film's poetry, allegory, and what can happen when a writer/director makes a challenging film exactly the way they intend, without studio interference. Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch again but with an extra eye, Benedict Wong, always crazy to see two Benedicts in the top billing, an un-dead Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg has a scene, some other cameos that we won't name, and newcomer Xochitl Gomez. So, let's talk about this movie. Sam Raimi is back to superheroes, there are some horror elements going on, reviews seem pretty good, there's a ton of excitement around this film, we helped crash the AMC ticketing service, buying in advance, renting Spider-Man: No Way Home the Thursday night before release. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and now this, his biggest budget yet at $60 million. We discuss. What's your favorite North myth? Any Scandinavian friends have comments about the authenticity? Ep 123Morbius (2022): New Movie Discussion- We’re a POSITIVE Drinking Game Podcast!

E

This week on the pod Dave, Jeff, and John discuss Morbius, the 2022 Sony (Marvel) movie that the internet got giddy about hating on. We drink and try to keep it positive! Yes, there were re-shoots and delays and Spider-Man was removed from the film (in case you hawkish-ly watch trailers), but the film is worth discussing with some nuance! Perhaps more believable nuance than Adria Arjona's Martine got but come on, people! Grab a beer and get ready for a conversation. Jared Leto, Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson, (it's all men, in case you haven't noticed...) Michael Keaton... is not in the movie but apparently after credit scenes count now and can earn you a top-5 imdb credit (see: Harry Styles & Patton Oswalt in Eternals). Ep 121Oscars Predictions 2022: Our Picks vs. Vegas Picks

E

Want a fun 2022 Oscars? Dave and Jeff offer up some story lines and see if our Should Win/Will Win predictions are in line with Las Vegas' betting odds. We are not sponsored by any of the 20 gambling sites that hired a celebrity and advertised during the Super Bowl. We would love to be sponsored by them. But we're not. All we have is a beer sponsor. To our Queensland, Australia listeners, cheers, have a fun early Oscars party to see if your Aussie Heiress Nicole Kidman wins another. Just please take her PSA out of AMC's pre-show. It's not her fault, it's theirs, but it's gone too far. They've had plenty of time to make a new one. Something about 3D glasses and popcorn, they usually have a weird roller coaster, some crap like that. Just stop telling me why I go to the movies. I go all the goddamn time. And when I'm watching a pre-show PSA at AMC, I'M ALREADY THERE! I MADE IT! I'M DOING IT!
