Ep 115Uncharted (2022): New Movie Discussion. This Movie Was Fun!
EAfter Jeff goes on a 2-minute unnecessary Oscars rant, Dave & John save the show by pivoting to Uncharted, the new franchise starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Directed by Ruben Fleischer. This movie was a little stupid and a lot of fun. Based on the video game franchise, this is also going to be a franchise, Tom Holland has a different American accent... it's just good fun. Ep 114Nightmare Alley (2021): Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley, starring and produced by Bradley Cooper, co-starring Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn, and Holt McCallany. The film is a noir, sort of, and a mystery thriller horror movie, we think, and it's nominated for Oscars! It's also currently streaming on both HBO Max and Hulu. The film has mixed reviews and is kind of confusing to pin down. We discuss. Ep 113Antlers (2021): Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week Jeff, John & Dave talk about Antlers, now available on HBOMax, directed by Scott Cooper, who is a FORCE. Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Hostiles, Black Mass, now this. Actors love him (he was one of them), Guillermo del Toro loves him so much he essentially forced Cooper to make this film, stepping up as producer. Scary antler stuff, lore, an Oregon meth town in the woods, Kerri Russell, Jesse Plemmons, a child actor who's insanely good... this movie is really great. Give Scott Cooper your love. F the critics. Turn the lights off and press play. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist Beer: @cbarrozo.beer Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 112Boba Fett eps 5 & 6 Rant & Moonfall: New Movie Discussion
EAfter Jeff rants about the character Boba Fett getting overshadowed by some scene stealing co-stars in his own series, John, Dave, & Jeff discuss Moonfall (16:10), Roland Emmerich's latest disaster movie, starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley & Michael Peña. The moon is falling out of orbit... but is it the moon, or something else?? We're a drinking game trying to keep it positive, and this movie had us drinking a lot. Ep 111Being The Ricardos: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod, Aaron Sorkin lives in Jeff's head rent free. Even still, Dave & Jeff found lots they agree on with this new Amazon Prime original, starring Nicole Kidman & Javier Bardem as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively. Aaron made some choices, for sure, but ultimately, this is a really watchable movie that is smart without being as smug as it could have been, funny without being a slapstick or knock-off, and the drummer from Birdman may or may not have scored parts of this movie, it's hard to know for sure. Shout-out to J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jake Lacy, Clark Gregg, and a whole lot of "They look familiar" actors. Also, Jeff Cronenweth, the DP. Way to crush, my man! Ep 110A Clockwork Orange: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week on the pod, we discuss how Stanley Kubrick's autobiographical tale messes us up so much but we keep going back to Kubrick for more- more questions, more concerns for who he was as a person, more wondering if he ever paid his bills. One of our co-hosts, from Australia, had never seen the film. We discussed his initiation. That's what it feels like, right? Everyone who's seen this... we've all been through it. We got pretty story-heavy, we think! Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist Beer: @cbarrozo.beer Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 109The Power of the Dog: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod we discuss The Power of the Dog, written and adapted by Jane Campion from the Thomas Savage novel of the same name. It's Benedict Cumberbath in a western, according to marketing. In the story line, they say stuff like: "Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling," and "He is a cowboy as raw as his hides." If you want to have a good watch of this film, keep your eye on Jesse Plemmons, Kirsten Dunst and Aussie Kodi Smit-McPhee, and pour one out for Bronco Henry. Also, kudos to Thomasin McKenzie for taking a pay cut to work close to home. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 108The Lost Daughter- New Movie Review & Discussion
EThis week on the pod we talk about Maggie Gyllenhaal's feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Coleman, Jesse Buckley, Dakota Johnson and Ed Harris. This movie is gripping! Lots of crying kids and lots of psychological tension. A co-host Dave put it, the more we discussed, the more we liked the film. Keep and eye on this come awards season. Ep 107Don’t Look Up (2021): New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod Dave, Jeff & John discuss Don't Look Up, Adam McKay's Climate Change (and more) satire starring so many famous people I can only use one name/word per person: Leo, JLaw, Meryl, MarkyRy, Jonah, Ariana, Cudi, Timothée, Cate, Medea, Himesh, Perlman, Rob Morgan. This episode became a little bit of a debate with two co-hosts loving the movie and one who wished he loved it a little more, so we had a nice (for the most part) back and forth while also picking apart lots of pieces of the film here and there. Adam, keep making movies!! We need more! Kudos to all members of the cast who took a pay cut! Available on Netflix. Ep 106Spiderman - No Way Home: New Movie Discussion
EIt's here, it's breaking records but is it any good? There are 2 answers to this, one is who cares it's gonna make a billion dollars and the other is a resounding Yes. Jeff, having tremendous difficulty with his lifestyle, takes the week off leaving John and Dave to discuss the biggest superhero movie release of the year. As usual, first 15 minutes is spoiler free and you bet we let you know when we get to the spoiler section. Dave gets gushed, John tries to call Marvel to action and somehow Scorsese gets a mention. Spiderman No Way Home is in theaters now starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch. Don't forget to hit like and subscribe, those buttons really activate the electric zapper we put in Jeff's watch. Ep 105West Side Story (2021): Some BFAs and an Aussie Discuss this New Movie!
EToday on the pod we discuss Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, adapted by the brilliant Tony Kushner, shot by legend Janusz Kaminski, and starring a whole bunch of awesome people. This movie is so so good, one of the best movie musicals in decades, perhaps an all-timer. We had fun! This movie was so good. We drank beer and talked about West Side. It's just so great, I don't have much else to say. We also talked about drugs in parliament. Push play, like, and subscribe! Ep 104Licorice Pizza: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod Jeff, Dave & John discuss our 70 MM screenings of Licorice Pizza, currently in limited release ahead of a nationwide release on Christmas, 2021. Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, which he wrote, directed and co-cinematographered, is an intimate look at a friendship/romance among two young people in LA's San Fernando Valley 1973. The film is cinema, people. It has life, it's lush, it's funny, the cast is amazing, and the Bradley Cooper and Sean Penn cameos, along with a few others, are all amazing. Go see this when you can! Ep 103Ghostbusters: Afterlife: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod we discuss Ghostbusters: Afterlife! Most of our hosts loved this movie so we had a fun conversation about the new entry in this strange, sporadic franchise that apparently will continue after this film! If you loved the original and have kids, just like director Jason Reitman (son of OG director, Ivan, or course), go see this movie! It's fun. The kids are the new busters, one of whom was in Stranger Things and It, the other was in I, Tonya and Captain Marvel, have made a hell of an impression. So don't listen to co-host Jeff, listen to your hearts instead. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 102The Matrix (1999): Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week Jeff, Dave & John head back to the 90s to stop by the mall, hit up CD World for the Matrix soundtrack, stop by Spencer gifts for some leather/vinyl jackets, hit up PacSun to buy some JNCO Jeans, blast our new Rob Zombie music in our Airwalks to prepare for our re-watch of the revolutionary 1999 film The Matrix, which is available on HBOMax with the rest of the trilogy. The 4th installment, Resurrections, comes out 12/22. After Jeff explains why he hasn't seen this movie since he saw it 25 times when he was 12, the guys explain their re-watch before discussing what aged well, signature shots, casting what-ifs and a fun game to examine some potential plot-holes or things that didn't age well without actually criticizing the movie. Ep 101Eternals: New Movie Discussion & Broader MCU Implications
EThis week on the pod, John decided to skip the 4th biggest movie opening of the year to enjoy some fun in the sun, so Dave and Jeff take us to the MCU in a discussion of Eternals. The film is directed by Chloe Zhao and stars Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, a bunch of Game of Thrones dudes, a bunch of people we'll be seeing lots more of like Lauren Ridloff and Barry Keoghan (Jeff pronounced his name wrong on the pod, what an ass, it's Cow-gan), and the movie is good! New mythology, lots of new moving pieces, I can see why critics were suspicious and, you know, critical, but screw them. This is fun and there are a lot of awesome people who's work you'll appreciate. Give it a go. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 100Last Night in Soho: New Movie Discussion
E100 Episodes! We made it to 100. Very proud of everyone involved, especially Dave's liver since he pregames before the show and saves a "mix-down beer" for after. Cheers. This week, we discuss Edgar Wright's "I don't want to commute to work anymore" film Last Night in Soho, starring Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith. and Diana Rigg. The movie was both stunning and disturbing- but in a good way. Happy Halloween! Go see this movie. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 99Dune 2 Greenlit! Plus Dune: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff reflect on the news that Dune 2 is a GO, or is it Dune: Chapter 2? Did Denis already have the second movie title and poster finished before the first one was completed and a second was green-lit?? We discuss how the movie's been doing (pretty OK so far) before diving into our discussion. Dave is a sci fi nerd who's seen every sci fi movie multiple times (the guy has seen Solo 4 times... he loves sci fi fantasy epics, especially with sound design this sick). John read the books and was ready to GO. Jeff was Jeff. I think he likes the movie more after the discussion than he did after the movie, which is good! That's why we have a podcast! We're a positive film podcast trying to spread our love of movies and we hope you join us on our journey to Arrakis! Ep 98The Last Duel: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod Jeff & Dave discuss The Last Duel, the new Jodie Comer movie co-written by and co-starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, with Adam Driver, directed by Ridley Scott. This $100 mill movie has not been doing well at the box office but is sure to stay in the conversation this fall when it begs a streaming service for a deal. Based on a true story, this movie is very well made and acted with all elements of the film serving the issue at its core which leads to the duel, as mentioned in the title. We discuss! Ep 97No Time to Die: New Movie Discussion
EAfter the longest wait ever comes the longest Bond film ever leading to our longest single film episode ever. And that's a good thing cause there's so much packed into Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond. Episode is spoiler free for the beginning and we shout multiple warnings before touching on spoilers... if this movie is going to be ruined, it's not by us (Looking at you clickbait (spoilers) headings...) Ep 96Venom: Let There Be Carnage: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod Dave, John and Jeff discuss Venom: Let There Be Carnage. And there was. There was Carnage. There was also a larger MCU connection revealed, so this surprise megahit (well, significantly outperforming expectations) really payed off! Sony is pleased. Also, Dave wanted to let everyone know Dolby Cinema is the way to see it! Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomi Harris, Dan from Veep, they're all back, directed by Andy Serkis, it's really good fun. Ep 95Dear Evan Hansen: New Movie Discussion
E**Please see disclaimer before listening** This week on the pod Dave, John and Jeff engage in a civil discussion about the polarizing new film Dear Evan Hansen, which was released theatrically 9/24/2021. We are a positive criticism podcast where each host has to drink anytime we say anything negative about a film. The critics said so many negative things and we hate those kind of critics. They were probably right about this film but f them anyway. We got to work in an attempt to find the good in this movie musical starring Ben Platt, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams and Kaitlyn Dever. The movie was directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower), written by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. **disclaimer- This conversation covers topics such as teenage suicide as two different characters in the film struggled with this issue. We also discuss how it was used in the plot, which can be a difficult conversation to hear. If you are struggling or know anybody struggling with harmful thoughts, call 1-800-273-8255 and skip this episode.** Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 94Malignant: New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John discuss Malignant, the new James Wan film that's even scarier than Aquaman, currently available in theaters and on HBOMax. James Wan rounded up many of his pals to offer some genre-blending horror that's part ghost story, party monster movie, part comedy (intentional or not), and part fun. Hear what we thought! Ep 93The Karate Kid (1984): Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week Jeff finally watches The Karate Kid all the way through, and John and Dave join him to discuss re-watching this movie in 2021. Ralph Macchio, Academy Award nominee Pat Morita, Elisabeth Shue, Johnny and the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange (essentially), the grandma from Happy Gilmore... Iconic. Anytime we knock anything about this movie we have to drink! Join us for a bit of nostalgia and if you're sitting down, grab a drink. Ep 92Shang-Chi: New Movie Discussion
EHurricane Ida couldn't keep us away from the theater this week! John, Dave and Jeff went to the cinema to catch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which came out this Labor Day weekend earning a $90 million haul in 4 days. Our show is a drinking game where we must stay positive or else we have to drink. We ended up just drinking on our own because this movie is great! Simu Liu shines as Shaun/Shang-Chi, Awkwafina nails her supporting role, Meng'er Zhang and Michelle Yeoh are incredible, and Tony Leung (Ip Man) is a complete stand-out. We discuss. Ep 91Sweet Girl- New Movie Discussion
EThis week Jeff moderates John and Dave in a discussion about Sweet Girl, the surprise action vigilante movie starring Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced that critics have panned but our reviews are good! That's what we do on the pod. We say 'f you' to stuffy critics and drink beer while propping up movies that outperform the Chicago Sun Times' review. Also, the movie is an 'f you' to big pharma and the for-profit health care industry. Who doesn't want to see Jason Momoa kick some profit-hungry pharma exec ass?? The movie is available to stream on Netflix. Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 90Annette- New Movie Discussion
EThis week on the pod co-host Jeff returns to join John and Dave in a discussion about Annette, the new entry available on Amazon Prime that was the talk of Cannes. The film is directed by French director Leos Carax with an original screenplay (and about five dozen original songs) written by the Mael Brothers aka Sparks. Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star as a Hollywood comedian and a famous opera singer, respectively, who (eventually...) have a 2 year old daughter with an exceptional gift. The movie is dividing critics and podcast co-hosts. We discuss! Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 89Suspiria: Should Have Seen That By Now
EJohn and Dave take a trip back to the 70's for Dario Argento's cult classic Suspiria. We'd love to make some witty remarks about this, but we're still in therapy. Find out who liked it, who didn't and who was insane enough to try watching the 2005 remake straight afterwards. Dave get's technical on the filming process, and everyone is gushing over some impressive practical in-camera effects as we discuss this colorful, and occasionally shocking experiment in cinema. Ep 88Reminiscence - New Movie Discussion
EJohn and Dave dive into the new Hugh Jackman film Reminiscence (This is a play on words you'll get after you've seen the movie). They discuss the wonders of noir and neo noir cinema, botch the intro, totally forget the name of another famous Australian actor.... twice and finish it up with a discussion of whether or not this futuristic detective tale hits the mark. Ep 87Frozen: Should Have Seen That By Now
EFrozen, the Disney smash hit that grossed over one billion dollars finally gets the positivity treatment as Dave, John and Mark Monstroski from The Matt & Mark Movie Show publicly admit that none of them have seen it. This episode has more twists than an M. Night Shyamalan film as somewhere in the middle, an even more shocking confession brings a glorifying positive truth to the entire team. Ep 86Soylent Green: Should Have Seen That By Now
EDave and John are joined by special guest Mark Monstroski from The Matt & Mark Movie Show. This week we go old school sci-fi and talk about one of the most recognizable, most parodied and most ruined endings of all time. It's also really creepy how many of this dystopian 2022 conditions it was right about. It also happens to be one of Mark's favorite films which means we're never going to his house for dinner. Ep 85Catwoman - Was It Really That Bad?
EIt's finally happened. A listener suggestion (yes we take those find us on our socials) leads Dave and John to attempt the ultimate debate. Was Halle Berry's Catwoman as bad as the legends say. Dave finally gets a team role he's happy with, John makes some valiant attempts to keep it on track before succumbing to the dark side in this exercise in positivity that goes horribly wrong. Ep 84The Suicide Squad - A discussion
EWhile Jeff's away, Dave and John will play... especially when one of Dave's most anticipated releases of 2021 finally hits cinemas. What follows is a discussion between a film traditionalist and a DCEU superfan... it doesn't get ugly but there are some political level dismissals of opinion in this episode as two film makers who love to challenge each other's opinions (and that's the way they like it) take on James Gunn's DC film The Suicide Squad. Ep 83Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week Dave & Jeff discuss Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as part of our 'Should Have Seen That By Now' series. This movie has some of the greatest sword/action sequences of all time, which are all all incredibly well motivated! Also, this is not just about sword fights on tree tops. Somebody takes a circular blade to the forehead. It's wild. Kudos to NYU grad Ang Lee! Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. EThis week on the pod Dave and Jeff discuss The Green Knight, writer/director David Lowery's (A Ghost Story, Pete's Dragon, Ain't Them Bodies Saints) epic, fantastical retelling (and reinterpretation) of the 14th century chivalric romance poem about the half nephew of King Arthur- yes, THAT King Arthur- who is heir to the throne despite being an entitled f*boy. While stunning and intoxicating, this movie can be gddamn confusing, so Dave and Jeff walk you through some elements without spoiling much. As for the cast, Dev Patel is extraordinary as our protagonist, Sir Gawain, with a supporting cast that also features Alicia Vikander, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury and Erin Kellyman. Ep 81The Village: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week John, Dave and Jeff take an anonymous listener's suggestion and revisit the Village, M. Night Shyamalan's 4th theatrical release after The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000) and Signs (2002), each of which made boatloads of money. We know the twist/reveal/explanation soured the film's reception among most critics and nearly every Shyamafan, but it deserves another look. We're a beer drinking podcast that gets buzzed anytime we say anything negative about a film. The cast includes William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrian Brody, Brendan Gleeson, Cherry Jones, Judy Greer, Michael Pitt, and Jesse Eisenberg. Ep 80OLD- Movie Review
EM. Night Shyamalan is back at it! His latest entry into the Shyamaverse is OLD, a thriller set primarily on a private beach near an exclusive island resort where everyone on the beach, from ages 6 to 80ish, starts aging rapidly and must figure out how to escape or die. That would be a spoiler if the trailer didn't give away not only the premise, but the majority of the excitement and jumps that lurk within first hour. We're a positive film podcast, so Jeff and Dave worked hard to hoist this film up. Anytime we say something negative= bzzzzzz, we drink. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Hosts: Jeff Ostermeuller, Dave Green. Twitter: @theloveofcinema, Twitch/Facebook/Instagram: @theloveofcinemapod, YouTube: The Love of Cinema Podcast.
Ep 79Willy's Wonderland starring Nicolas Cage
EThis week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff pour some beers, ready a drinking game and log on to Hulu for Willy's Wonderland, an 88 minute slasher/comedy/horror-ish genre flick starring Nicolas Cage. There have been many Cage films over the last 10 years. This one, with a budget of $5.5 million and a script that spent years on the Blood List- a list of highly anticipated genre films- was likely a blast to film and a joy to watch. Nic Cage agrees to work an overnight janitorial shift at Willy's Wonderland, a defunct Chuck E. Cheese-esque family fun zone, where he punches and slashes his way through possessed animatronics come to life before they kill the teenage locals come to free him and burn the place down. It's really fun and really free with your paid Hulu subscription service. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 78Space Jam: A New Legacy
EThis week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John due our best to redeem the new Space Jam movie from those pesky critics, who have been largely underwhelmed by the LeBron James reboot of the 1996 classic starring Michael Jordan. Here, the Looney Tunes are back to help the Bron win a game of basketball under the duress of humanoid-yet-not-real artificial intelligence Al G. Rhythm, played by Don Cheadle, using gaming code stolen from LeBron's son Dom. Lots of hammed nostalgia, ads and WB cross-pros keep this an entertaining flick that currently has a strong 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. We discuss! Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Hosts: Jeff Ostermeuller, John Say, Dave Green. Ep 77F9 The Fast Saga
EContinuing Family Week on the pod, everyone strapped themselves into those comfy recliner chairs at the movies for the roller coaster that is F9 The Fast Saga. Dave and Jeff went to the same cinema for the first time in almost 2 years and it might have got awkward. We cover everything in this episode from the environment of space (or lack thereof), the adjustable laws of physics and the selective nature of magnetism (which seems to make Dave irrationally angry - why is magnetism his trigger?) and how despite all this the escapism of these movies is what brings the crowd. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Hosts: Jeff Ostermeuller, John Say, Dave Green. Ep 76Black Widow
EThis week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff discuss Marvel's newest movie... at least, the most recent MCU feature film, a standalone about Scarlett Johansson's character Black Widow. This film, set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and the infamous Sokovia Accords, takes a look at Natasha Richardson's- I mean Natasha Romanoff's- history with the Red Room, a fictional KGB espionage training program. With help from Florence Pugh, they're gonna try to bring that mother down. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 75Dr Strangelove: Should Have Seen That By Now
EWe once again welcome our guest host Jeff Ronan from the And Almost Starring podcast to discuss the gratuitous oversight that neither he nor Dave (keep in mind both these people host MOVIE podcasts) have seen Dr Strangelove. When asks the ultimate question, Jeff sugarcoats it, Dave does not and then we launch into the merits of why everyone should watch this absolute classic. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Ep 74Superman IV: Was It Really That Bad
EA long standing suggestion for the Was It Really That Bad, we dive into Superman IV with our special return guest Ryan who ends up trying to moderate a debate he is not prepared for. A random roll decides who is positive and negative and Dave, who can be quite brutal ends up on the positive side. We don't want to say he bulls&*tted his way through this, but he totally bulls*&tted his way through this and John, for the record, was way nicer than he could have been. By the end we've covered the entire original franchise and we dedicate this episode to the memory of Richard Donner (who had nothing to do with this film but started it all with Superman: The Movie) who we found out had passed just before recording. Ep 73Reservoir Dogs: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week on the pod Dave finally gets over his fear of Quentin Tarantino movies by watching Steve Buscemi play dress-up with his friends in Reservoir Dogs! Quentin once worked on a Dolph Lungren workout video and learned from it to make Reservoir Dogs, and Dave was not surprised by that. He liked the movie and John and Jeff enjoyed their re-watches. We also drank some beer! Please like and subscribe to our show. We'd really appreciate it. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 72The Social Network: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis week on the pod we talk about The Social Network! Yes, Mark Zuckerberg's authoritarian grip on an online community with 3 billion users has been... polarizing, but does the film hold up? We love to talk about movies so we're rooting for it! Hear how we think it's aged since it's release in 2021 and where David Fincher's vision of Aaron Sorkin's script places this film on the HoF director's acclaimed catalog. Ep 71Psycho: Should Have Seen That By Now
EIt was raining, we needed to hide our money, we got off the main rode and checked into the Bates Motel.... We're talking about Psycho! Somehow, one of our co-hosts had never seen the film. John Say, headed to one of the country's best film schools in the fall, opens up about what it was like applying to film school having never seen Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, one of the best movies of all time. He had seen North By Northwest, he loves Rear Window, but Psycho was always a skip. Thankfully, he had Dave and Jeff to help guide him through his first viewing experience with this absolute classic. We discuss the incredible story, oft-overlooked by the famous bits, plot devices and storytelling techniques, all while drinking beers. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Ep 70The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
EThis week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss the newest installment of The Conjuring saga, currently in theaters and available on HBOMax through mid-July 2021. On Rotten Tomatoes this movie has a 56% critics score and 86% audience score, which makes us mad. We're a positive criticism podcast, so if you're tired of the critics always hunting for the negative, grab a beer, hang with us and let's have some fun! This is the first Conjuring movie not directed by James Wan, which features a human(ish) antagonist, but still packed with lots of spirits and supernatural hell we love in the Conjuring/Annabelle/Nun films. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as Ed and Lorraine Warren working a real life case that gained national recognition in 1981 and a popular book in 1983. Think about what Helter Skelter would have been like if Charles Manson had the ability to curse families and summon daemons.... Yeah, I spell 'daemons' with an "ae". I read The Golden Compass and thought it was cool. Directed by Michael Chaves. Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist. Beer: @cbarrozobar2019. Edited and produced by Dave Green. Ep 69Singin' In The Rain with Amy Jo Jackson: Should Have Seen That By Now
EDespite having a BFA in Music Theatre, co-host Jeff had never seen 'Singin' In The Rain'! What a loon! We are once again joined by Amy Jo Jackson, co-host of the 'And Almost Starring' podcast which breaks down the casting of popular movies. Amy Jo previously joined us for our In The Heights episode, has recently written a musical and loves this classic film, so what a perfect guest! We discuss why this movie ages well, the self-aware tone, elegant style, movie magic, how changing times affects art, stars Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor and Jean Hagen, and whether or not this is the greatest movie musical of all time. It's currently available on HBOMax. Ep 68In The Heights with Amy Jo Jackson!
EThis week on the pod we are incredibly honored to be joined by Amy Jo Jackson! Amy Jo co-hosts an incredible podcast with partner and former guest host Jeff Ronan called 'And Almost Starring', which breaks down a movie's casting and discusses who almost starred. Amy Jo has recently written a musical, so what a perfect guest for our 'In The Heights' discussion! As always, anytime we say a negative comment about the film, we have to drink! Fortunately, we recorded on a Friday night, not that Amy Jo has weekends at the moment. We discuss being a musical theater lover seeing this prescient piece on the screen in NYC, the stories, the characters, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie is directed by John Chu, written by Pulitzer winner Quiara Alegria Hudes who co-wrote the musical with Lin-Manuel, and stars Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins, Gregory Diaz IV, Olga Merediz, Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Marc Antony and Mateo Gomez, featuring cameos by Christopher Jackson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Patrick Page and more. Ep 67Parasite: Should Have Seen That By Now
EThis mid-week episode features Parasite as our 'Should Have Seen That By Now' movie since Dave, Australian native and AMPAS skeptic, decided he couldn't skip his monthly viewing of Solo: A Star Wars Story to see Parasite... for the past 18 months. One thing Dave is really good at though is timeliness. Like, if an episode has to come out and his co-host hasn't posted it, he's on it! If there's a 4-star international juggernaut of a film, however... In all seriousness, John and Jeff re-watched this film to prepare to grill Dave for his life choices and all we could do was talk about how great this movie is. Whether it's your first or last viewing, give it a 2021 look. It's on Hulu and it keeps aging well. Like Dave, who's age surprises everyone except his chiropractor. Ep 66A Quiet Place Part II
EThis week Jeff, John and Dave went to the movies! It was good to be back. We saw A Quiet Place Part II, the sequel to 2018's A Quiet Place, written and directed by John Krasinski, starring Krasinski and Emily Blunt. On initial reactions, it would appear Krasinski has done it again! This film takes place after the events of the first film which forced the family to relocate while blind alien predators continue to lurk in the woods using their impeccable hearing to find their prey. While Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou help fill out the incredible cast, the children of Blunt and Krasinski's characters, played by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, steal the show.
