Asha Degree was a "victim of homicide" and her body was "concealed," according to search warrant documentation obtained by WCNC Charlotte on Monday. The FBI along with state and local investigators searched a Cleveland County property all last week in a decades-long search for Degree, who was 9 years old when she disappeared from Shelby, North Carolina in 2000. Ep 667Harris & Trump focused on swing states after viral debate
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump launched campaign blitzes Thursday with dramatically different approaches to attracting swing-state voters who will decide the presidential contest. In North Carolina, Democratic nominee Harris used rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro to tout endorsements from Republicans who have crossed the aisle to back her. She also promised to protect access to health care and abortion, while delighting her partisan crowds with celebrations of her debate performance Tuesday, taking digs at Trump and cheerleading for her campaign and the country. In the border state of Arizona, the Republican Trump pitched a tax exemption on all overtime wages, adding it to his previous proposals to not tax tips or Social Security income. But the former president squeezed those proposals, along with a nonspecific pledge to lower housing costs, into a stemwinding speech marked by his most incendiary rhetoric on immigration and immigrants themselves, name-calling of Harris and others, and a dark, exaggerated portrait of a nation Trump insisted is in a freefall only he can reverse.READ MORE: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/politics/north-carolina-politics/vice-president-kamala-harris-campaigns-charlotte-north-carolina/275-5d0ceb09-5f8b-4ddb-8ada-a88caefeb614Happy Friday the 13th! Ep 663Monday marks deadline for Charlotte leaders to purchase Red Line railroad tracks
Monday marks a major deadline for the future of Charlotte's proposed Red Line commuter rail service. It's the last day city leaders can buy the tracks -- and the deal with Norfolk Southern is well underway as of Monday morning. The city of Charlotte voted last Tuesday to acquire the railroad tracks and support a sales tax to fund the purchase for the project. Only one member of the Charlotte City Council, Tariq Bokhari, voted against the two resolutions. One of the measures was in support of the sales tax while the other approved the actual purchase of the necessary O-Line tracks from Southern Norfolk.Read more: https://www.wcnc.com/article/traffic/deadline-charlotte-leaders-purchase-red-line-railroad-tracks/275-e15b64b7-5ba9-4326-aee3-92cc75e285f5WCNC Charlotte To Go is a daily news and weather podcast you can listen to so you can start your day with news that impacts you from the team at WCNC Charlotte. Ep 660Dealing with the mental stress of school violence
Quinten Canty barely remembers a time before school shootings—and school lockdowns—were the norm. "They'll go over the intercom and they'll say, 'lockdown, lockdown, lockdown'," Canty said. "What we're supposed to do is we're supposed to hide in the safest corner where no windows are or farthest away from the door. Some teachers encourage that we have people like holding desks and chairs."Learning about school shootings, like Wednesday's shooting at a high school in Georgia, is an instance the junior at West Charlotte High School says is becoming too common."It's kind of like we're getting accustomed to it, and it's not supposed to feel like that," Canty said. "You're not supposed to get comfortable with knowing that there is violence occurring at your school."Canty is involved in student government at his school to bring attention to issues like this—and the toll it can take on students' mental health.Read more: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/education/charlotte-high-schooler-reacts-to-georgia-shooting/275-7fcffed3-14bd-4bc9-8e62-09a688a27b96WCNC Charlotte To Go is a daily news and weather podcast you can listen to so you can start your day with news that impacts you from the team at WCNC Charlotte. Ep 659Families scrambling after charter school closes abruptly
The sudden closure of a Monroe charter school has left 160 students without a school and families trying to figure out the next steps. The Apprentice Academy announced its sudden closure on Saturday. The school principal and chairman of the board cited a variety of reasons for the closure. Among those reasons, a Thursday visit from the fire marshal's office where the school learned their certificate of occupancy (CO) was expired."School administration had believed in good faith that the CO was valid as the school had previously occupied the same building and had a valid CO at that time with no expiration date on the documentation," school administration explained on it website. "The Fire Marshall informed Administration that the previous CO had actually expired when Apprentice Academy vacated the building in 2019."Read more: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/education/monroe-apprentice-academy-charter-school-closes/275-43d1418b-375a-4083-be8e-9ff75bdc12beWCNC Charlotte To Go is a daily news and weather podcast you can listen to so you can start your day with news that impacts you from the team at WCNC Charlotte. There's a rich history behind why we celebrate it.Let's connect the dots.In the late 1800s, the average person worked 12-hour days, seven days a week just to make ends meet. Sometimes, kids as young as five would work in factories and mines. The working conditions were extremely unsafe. Then labor unions formed. Ep 643Town of Matthews votes against one-cent regional transit tax proposal
On Monday, Matthews town leaders voted against a new sales tax proposal to fund new regional transportation."While intended to improve regional transit, this plan fails to provide fair benefits to all communities," Matthews Town Commissioner Ken McCool wrote on social media this weekend. Matthews officials had been optimistic that a long-discussed Silver Line train would run through east Charlotte and to Matthews. However, in May, town officials learned the plan was being cut back. The future train line would only be built between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Uptown Charlotte. A bus rapid transit line would be implemented from Charlotte to Matthews instead.Read more: https://www.wcnc.com/article/money/matthews-oppose-transit-funding-sales-tax-silver-line-train-charlotte-mecklenburg/275-390820e2-187d-4e18-9415-662e51f6d658Watch WCNC Charlotte each weekday morning from 4:30 to 7 a.m.WCNC Charlotte To Go is a daily news and weather podcast you can listen to so you can start your day with news that impacts you from the team at WCNC Charlotte. The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of East Eighth Street and Hawthorne Avenue, according to the Charlotte Area Transit System. The impact was so violent that the only things left standing were steel guardrails and the concrete platform. Glass from the station was scattered across the station with yellow caution tape being put up to keep people away. CATS said the station will remain closed until further notice. Ep 636CMPD patrol officers now allowed to wear outer carrier vests
After a years-long debate over outer carrier vests, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is now allowing patrol officers to wear them without a doctor's note. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police said Police Chief Johnny Jennings has denied its requests to let patrol officers wear outer carrier vests for years. Only specialized units are allowed to wear the vests, and patrol officers can too with special permission due to medical reasons. However, on Thursday, a department-wide email said all officers can now request a vest if they want one for preventative care and minor medical issues. It’s unclear why Chief Johnny Jennings has changed his mind. He previously said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte that the vests raise safety concerns and make patrol officers look militarized.Read more: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/charlotte-police-outer-vests/275-c1861d5b-97f7-44ec-a4f0-d8625ad5ad0dWatch WCNC Charlotte each weekday morning from 4:30 to 7 a.m.WCNC Charlotte To Go is a daily news and weather podcast you can listen to so you can start your day with news that impacts you from the team at WCNC Charlotte.
