Fire crews in McDowell County are working to contain two fires early Friday morning.As of the 5:30 a.m. update Friday, officials confirmed fire crews had made good progress on the Crooked Creek fire and North Fork fire. In a previous update, the McDowell County Emergency Management Administration said the Crooked Creek near Old Fort had spread to 200 acres and was 15% contained. The 5:30 a.m. update did not contain acreage and containment numbers, but officials said officials are working to get updated information. Republican candidate, Jefferson Griffin, is still seeking to reverse the outcome in the race for a seat on the state Supreme Court, even after two recounts showed Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs narrowly winning the election. Riggs remains on the court while the legal battles play out.Litigation in state and federal court should decide the outcome of Griffin's efforts to have roughly 66,000 ballots thrown out. If the legal challenge succeeds, Griffin's lawyers say it would probably result in him claiming the seat. President Donald Trump is expected to visit western North Carolina on Friday in his first visit to the area during his second term as president, according to Buncombe County officials. The area was devastated by Hurricane Helene in late September, killing more than 100 people in the state and leaving thousands without shelter. Newly obtained search warrants connected to the disappearance of Madalina Cojocari reveal that, at least early on, the investigation centered around "believed sexual exploitation" of a minor child victim. Further warrants also unveiled more information about what investigators found as they began digging.The warrants, obtained by WCNC Charlotte, also reveal, that in the days after Madalina Cojocari was last seen, her mattress, clothing, Halloween costume and family photos were burned in a fire pit outside a Cornelius home. The warrants say a carpet from the home's upstairs spare bedroom was also burned. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared the city's crime data in a briefing on its 2024 End of Year Public Safety Report on Wednesday. The report gives an overview of public safety trends and police activities throughout last year. Charlotte saw a 3% decrease in overall crime in 2024, CMPD said. Chief Johnny Jennings attributed the overall decrease to the department's focus on juvenile crime, car thefts and street takeovers, which all fell during 2024. An audit of South Carolina's state finances finds that the puzzling $1.8 billion account mostly never existed in the first place.The lengthy report, independently done by consulting firm AlixPartners, was released Wednesday afternoon, and says: "We determined that approximately $1.6 billion of the $1.8 billion did not represent real cash."It also found the remaining $245 million did exist but was already included in the bank balances. City leaders in Hickory discussed a proposal Tuesday night to abolish the board overseeing the Hickory Public Housing Authority. The move comes in response to years of complaints about inefficiencies in the organization, which Mayor Hank Guess says has left much-needed affordable housing resources underutilized."There’s a tremendous need for affordable housing, and 40% of it’s not being utilized, and so we’re looking at trying to increase that," Guess said.The mayor explained that roughly 40% of the available housing vouchers in Hickory are not being used, creating a significant gap in housing assistance. A shooting in east Charlotte left four people hurt on Thursday.The shooting happened on Purple Thistle Lane near Tiger Lily Lane, according to Medic. Three people suffered life-threatening injuries and one suffered non-life-threatening injuries.The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not released any information on this shooting. More details about the man suspected of intentionally plowing a pickup truck into crowds along Bourbon Street in New Orleans are coming to light, including about his previous service in the U.S. Army.The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was born in the U.S. and was from Texas. Officials said he killed 15 people and injured dozens more before New Orleans police officers shot and killed him as he shot at them. People living in a homeless encampment in the city of Lancaster are expected to be moved from their current encampment on Friday. This notice is an extension from an original deadline originally set for a week earlier.Currently, those living in the encampment can be seen under the bridge along the Catawba River heading into the city.County officials say there is a warming center that’s been open since the beginning of December available for those in need. Uptown restaurant and nonprofit The King's Kitchen announced on Friday that it's closing, but the owner tells WCNC Charlotte its mission will live on at a new and exciting project at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Dream Center.The King's Kitchen was a staple on West Trade Street for nearly 15 years but had to close due to lack of foot traffic. A grieving mother is speaking out after the body of her 16-year-old son was found along a quiet road in Lincoln County over the weekend. Edwin Morales' family created a makeshift memorial in the area where his body was found along Whitehouse Drive in Lincolnton on Sunday. The family is left with so many unanswered questions and is trying to wrap their heads around what happened to him. Surrounded by photos, flowers and candles of devotion, Yuridia Morales' love burns bright. She says Edwin was more than just her son, he was a brother, a cousin and a friend. He was a light to those around him and will be terribly missed. "It's so that we can remember the person that he was," she said. "We pray that his soul can live in peace."The 16-year-old's body was found about a mile from his home. Lincoln County detectives are investigating the case as a possible homicide. Emergency crews battled a large fire at the Webb Road Flea Market in Salisbury early Sunday morning, officials said. The Bostian Heights Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the market around 4 a.m. When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from one of the buildings. Crews were able to extinguish the fire by 7:30 a.m. Joey Popp, the market's communications director, told WCNC Charlotte that Building B was the only part of the market that burned. According to Popp, no one was on the property at the time of the fire. Fire officials are now investigating to determine the cause. It's still unclear how much damage was caused. Two people were seriously injured in separate shootings overnight in Charlotte. The first incident happened in Uptown, not far from Spectrum Center. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced a new initiative aimed at increasing the visibility of officers and reducing crimes in all parts of the Queen City. The operation is a new take on Operation Heartbeat, which ran from 2022-23. As part of the program, officers will shine steady blue lights from police vehicles to increase visibility. The initiative was renewed by CMPD's Central Division last week, helping citizens feel safer as they come into Uptown, the department said. A 12-year-old who was shot following a "large street fight" on Saturday evening has died, Monroe Police confirmed. Monroe Police responded to a reported shooting on Skywatch Lane, which is just off MLK Jr. Boulevard, around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 7. When officers arrived, they found a 12-year-old who had been shot. The child, identified as Messiah Barrino, was taken to a Charlotte-area hospital where he died from his injuries. Two people have died and a third person was hurt after a shooting at a smoke shop in Rock Hill, according to the Rock Hill Police Department. One person has been arrested. Police responded to Budiman's Smokeshop & Art Gallery on Cherry Road around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday after reports that shots had been fired. As officers drove to the scene, they learned the suspect was a white man in a silver Dodge. When they got there, officers saw the man get in a truck with a gun and drive north on Cherry Road before crashing at the bridge over the Catawba River. Officers confronted the man when he got out of the truck, Rock Hill Police say. At one point, an officer fired their gun at the man but did not hit him. The man then charged toward officers and officers used a stun gun on him, and officers said there was a physical struggle.
