In this video we talk about Jen Loeffler's recent flare up and how she handled it. It only lasted 4 days which is amazing! You can learn from her. A few notes from this convo: Plan for them: Flare ups can be scary, but if we plan for them, we can prepare our brain's to not freak out. Stay calm: Ultimately, we want to be sure to not freak out, remember that our bodies have healed from this before & they can again. Befriend your body: Remember that God created us in this way and we can thank God for all the great work out bodies have been doing. Investigate: We also talk about spending some time looking at what has been happening in our life around the time of the flare up. At that point, taking that situation, including the thoughts and emotions, to our God who loves us. Jen brings up the helpful analogy of our brain/body only being able to handle a certain amount of emotions - kind of like a bucket. When we don't empty that bucket, it spills over. There are several ways to empty the bucket, but our favorite way is to use expressive writing. Especially as a Christian, I think we need to analyze what your brain is wanting in order to feel safe and then using scriptures to dump truth all over that. Let His truth, his goodness, into all the crevices of your fears. Are you willing to take this truth and begin to interrupt the fear cycle. The fear cycle won’t interrupt itself. It's true, using the bottom-up approach of breathing activities has an important role in creating change in the brain. As a Christian, originally, I disregarded these activities; not understanding the science and why it is such an important part of healing. In this video I talk about the two areas that belly breathing targets. First, it activates the Vagus nerve which runs down from our brain into our stomach area. It is the 10th cranial nerve and is housed in the parasympathetic nervous system. In chronic pain, this resting part of our nervous system needs help, and breathing is a fantastic way to do this. Secondly it helps to give our brains a break from thinking about the past and planning for this future. (worrying) Our brains default into these specific parts of our brains, but it can be exhausting. Breathing practices help us to be present and to pay attention to what is happening in the here and now.

Changing your inner dialogue and how you talk to and treat yourself. There were three areas that were really important for me to change my language towards myself. 1. How I treated and talked to my pain. Talk to your pain and listen to it. (frustrated with it, angry with it, try to get rid of it)2. How I talk to and about myself as a person. The things I believed about myself needed to change. Value, intelligence, capability. Start treating yourself with the truth about what God says about us, and to see ourselves in that light. Own and claim the identity that God has given you.3. How I treated my journey of healing. It is not helpful to put yourself on a timeline for healing. Instead choosing to be kind and patient with yourself in the healing process.

The Fawn Response is when we try to please the very people you fear. Instead of fighting or fleeing or freezing we adapt who we are to keep everyone happy or "comfortable". This is very costly to our nervous system because we have to ignore our emotions, needs and boundaries in order to keep others happy. As children, sometimes we don't have a choice. The only way to find safety is to placate our parents or caregivers. As adults we first need to ask if we are still in danger or if our body is reacting as if we are in danger. S1 Ep 1313 - how to rewire your brain with the gospel and reverse chronic pain and anxiety

In this video I talk about how the brain is 95% hardwired by the time we are in our adult years, including our pain! But don't give up hope! Through neuroplasticity we can change how it's wired. If we don't choose to interrupt our own thoughts, emotions, behaviors and perceptions, we end up living a pre-programmed life that is based on our past experiences. In order to rewire our brain, we have to teach ourselves a new way of thinking by thinking beyond how we feel. We do not have to be controlled by our past emotions. Joe Dispenza talks about how our personality traits are built off of an event that led to a thought, that lead to an emotion, that led to a mood, to a temperament, and finally to a personality trait. When those personality traits were learned from a fearful moment, our brains become programmed to fear and nervous system dysregulation. Taking the truth that Christ gives us we can challenge our thoughts, think deeper than we feel and diligently and with perseverance we can teach our brain to wire differently. The bible is full of examples of him asking us to think in ways that are contrary to our flesh and what comes naturally to us. Neuroplasticity is all over in the bible. By allowing God to heal our hurt from the past, and then embracing and noticing the blessings in the "today," we can rewire our brains with truth, freedom and love from God.
