S1 Ep 88 - shame has a nasty role in chronic pain

Shame is a fear response that isn’t based in truth. We know who we are in Christ. But when feel shame take over as our identity, it causes us to not be able to hear God’s voice clearly and causes us to ask the question “what if?” This causes us to live in perpetual fear that makes our brains on edge looking out for ways we are “wrong”. Our brains perceive this as danger and send a warning to our body that we are not safe. BOOM. Chronic Pain.

In healing, we start to peel back the layers of our pain to discover what is dysregulating our nervous system.When we people- please we get a hit of chemicals that make us feel good and acceptance. But the cost of this is high. Often times in order to keep others happy and pleased with us, we are suppressing our thoughts, opinions, beliefs and emotions.It causes our brains to be on high alert - looking for ways to avoid rejection. This hyper-vigilance causes the brain to be hyper-vigilant. When it perceives we may not be in the good graces of someone it sends a warning signal of pain.

We are not perfect, in fact, and we are perfectly safe being flawed. When we operate out of the fact that we have to earn acceptance, love and safety by being perfect, it causes the nervous system to be hyper-vigilant and in a constant state of earning safety. The brain will constantly be looking for rejection and disapproval. This causes hyper-vigilance and pain. The truth is, we are made perfect through the cross and we can stop striving. HIs blood makes us perfect, and therefore we can be safe in our imperfection.
