E86-year-old Garth Barfoot is in London at the time of posting this (participating in the 2022 London marathon). He has had an incredible career in real estate (Barfoot and Thompson). But it’s through his feats in endurance running and triathlon events that I know him. What makes Garth even more remarkable is his entry to the sport- he didn’t start competing until his late 50’s, proving it’s never too late to do something that seems impossibly hard.Dom Hosted on Acast. Ep 112Episode 39: Sir John Kirwan
ESir John Kirwan is an All Black legend. But its what he has done since retiring from sport that has made him an all-round legend.15 years ago JK reluctantly spoke publicly about his depression and mental health struggles (we discuss his reluctance in this chat- I won't tell you who pushed him into doing it!)I’m absolutely fizzing about sharing this one- just in time for Mental Health awareness week in New Zealand- Sir John Kirwan. Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets. This guy was the trailblazer. NOBODY really talked about this stuff publicly before Sir John. There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health. We also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior. If this episode triggers anything, PLEASE chat to someone you trust. Or text 1737 anytime (NZ). You’ll get to chat to a trained counsellor.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

She’s done the coast to coast multi sport event a few times and was even an age group running champ in her teens. She is also a cancer survivor- this was a diagnosis she got when she was holding down the job of a Cabinet minister that saw her chalking up 100 hour work weeks. We cover alot of stuff in this conversation and she really opens up in the second half when we get to the real important stuff- like the cancer, mental wellbeing and therapy, she could not have been more open than she was. And I really thank her for that.I really enjoyed this chat with Nikki and I hope you guys do as well.Dom. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EThis bite sized episode comes from the full length conversation with Brad Smeele, pro wakeboarder turned quadraplegic andn ow a best selling author! The idea of this snippet is to serve as, I guess, like a trailer on Netflix to decide if you want to hear more. Or pehaps you are time-poor and can't spare a whole hour (maybe after hearing a bite size episode you will decide to go back to the full length episode when you do have time). In this snippet, Brad discusses Suzie, a remarkable Auckland Kinesiologist who helped him with muscle injuries pre-accident, then helped him retrain his mind and belief systems post accident. Brad talks about Suzie and the lessons learned in great detail in his book, "Owning Up." Thanks to Suzies incredible teachings and now Brads generositiy in sharing those teachings, we can all get something from this.Hope you like it.Dom Hosted on Acast. Ep 104Episode 37: Brad Smeele (Pro wakeboarder turned quadraplegic, now best-selling author)
EBrad Smeele was one of the first guests on the podcast (episode 4, March 2022). He now becomes the first guest I've had on twice. The first episode with Brad is one that I still get messages about most weeks. I think this conversation will be just as impactful. So many lessons in here and a look inside his best selling book which has just come out, "Owning it." Its a great book- I read the entire thing (and its a big-ass book). Brad wrote the whole thing, all 500,000 words using a mouth stylus and tapping on his iPhone screen woodpecker style. Its a mind blowing achievement.Hope you guys enjoy Brads company as much as I do. Last weekend (Saturday September 3) he played his final game for the Warriors against the Gold Coast Titans at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland. He made a decision earlier this year to have a break for the sport that has brought him money and fame and is also the only career he has known. He's not calling it retirement. He's not ruling out a future return. But he has no idea of what his 2023 will look like, other than it will include travelling and journalling. Its scary...but also bloody exciting. He's a fascinating guy and I really hope you guys like this conversation.DomCheck out his blog: simplelessons.com Hosted on Acast. To claim the record, she will havew to run about three full marathons every day for 18 days. Just let that sink in for a second....around 126km per day for 18 days! Its a mindblowing thing to attempt. What makes this attempt even more remarkable is she is the mum of a two year old so has done most of her training pushing him in a stroller. She knows what she is in for though, ten years ago when she was 19 she ran the length of NZ in 34 days.Follow her socials to follow her progress:FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100071705915836IG: nzrun2022Give-a-little: https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/nz-run-for-mental-health?fbclid=IwAR1OTtrdkzkaywXO4eLpvq1V-oZYK87rX77xPHU4FZLdpwWiEADcz73_x7Y Hosted on Acast. Then switched to rugby and briefly made the All Blacks before switching to rugby league where he made a name for himself as one of the most gifted and highest paid players in the world. After retiring from sport he enjoyed more success as a TV star and half of an incredibly successful comedy duo with Marc Ellis.Despite living so much of his life on TV and in magazines, Matthew is a relatively private person these days so it was a real honour to sit down with him for a conversation about many different aspects of his life- sports, fame, love, divorce, parenthood, legal troubles, drugs, reputation and much much more.Hope you guys like this one. Thanks for listening.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 9433: Rhys Darby (Actor and comedian)
EThrilled to be sharing this episode with you guys. Rhys Darby!I really loved doing this one. I'd say we have chatted 15times for short radio interviews over the years so this was a first. Lots of big laughs, as you'd expect from Rhys, but also lots of really good insightful chat. It was good to peel back those hilarious top few layers and get a little glimpse into the man behind that voice, those jokes, those movies, those international commercials, etc. Rhys is a New Zealand treasure so it was surreal having him round at my place sitting in my podcast studio (spare room) to share stories about his incredible life.Hope you guys enjoy this one. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 9132: Leo Molloy (Infamous hospitality identity with political aspirations)
EMany New Zealander over a certain age probably remember an iconic student bar called The Fat Ladies Arms. That was the brain child of Leo Molly in the early 1990s in Palmerston North. That is when we became friends. Since then Leo has ridden the extreme highs and lows of hospitality with resturants and bars including Euro, Cowboys, Headquarters and Cardiac (Which sent him bankrupt). At the time of releasing this, Leo has just announced that he is pulling out of the race to be the next Mayor of Auckland (This chat was recorded earlier in the year and we talk about pretty much everything EXCEPT for politics). This was a fun conversation- if you've never heard of Leo you'll get to learn about the life of one of New Zealands great characters. If you have a pre concevied idea of who Leo is, this may change your opinion (or not LOL).Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 5219: Joseph Parker
EI have been lucky enough to interview Joseph maybe 20 times since he first became a professional boxer ten years ago. But this is the first time I have sat down with him for an in-depth conversation. If you are a boxing fan, you’ll love this. But I honestly think this is an enjoyable conversation for all. We cover so much ground here outside of the ring including running, his relationship with Tyson Fury and why he felt depressed after becoming the world champion. Joe is a great guy. Humble, kind, generous and polite...but he could also kill you with one punch if he wanted to!Thanks very much to the sponsors of this episode, The HUAWEI WATCH GT runner. Ep 5118: Kerry Suter and Ali Pottinger
EWARNING: Unfortunately, this audio is not perfect. Due to the nature of Kerry’s injury, he was unable to get real close to the microphone (Sorry about that- I need better equipment for occasions like this). But I hope you guys can get past these audio issues and still appreciate this story from 2 of life’s most inspiring people.Kerry and Ali are couple goals. They met at a trail running event 8 years ago in a case of love at first site. Since then, they set up their coaching business Squadrun and have helped thousands of runners of all ability achieve things they doubted were possible. On the 26th of February 2022 Kerry Suter went into Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa forest on a mountain bike. He was taken out in a rescue helicopter. This mountain bike ride was to be the final piece of movement for the supremely fit superhuman. I caught up with Kerry and Ali in what has become their home since the accident, a spinal unit in Auckland. This conversation was recorded in May 22, less than 3 months after the accident. Its not an easy listen. We laughed a lot- humor is a big coping mechanism for these legends. We also cried a lot.If you want to be coached by Kerry and Ali, reach them at Squadrun: https://squadrun.co.nz/This episode is sponsored by my mates at Em’s Power Cookies. Ep 49Bite size: Barry Magee recalls his 1960 Olympic marathon race to a bronze medal.
EThe 1960 Olympics in Rome have historical significance for New Zealand, then a little known country of just 2 million people. Murray Halberg and Peter Snell both in black singlets won gold medals on the track within an hour of each other. Not long after that their friend and training partner, Barry Magee won a bronze medal in the dark in the marathon. As well as all being Kiwis and friends. All three men were trained by the great coach, Arthur Lydiard (who had to pay his own way over and was not allowed to stay in the village or watch his athletes. In this short podcast recap, 88-year-old Barry gives us a blow by blow of the greatest day of his life with detail so crisp it feels like you are running alongside him.I can’t thank Barry enough for sharing his story with me. And I hope you guys enjoy it.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 4817: Barry Magee (1960 Olympic marathon bronze medalist)
E88 year old Barry Magee was, in his own words, only a “decent runner” compared to his training partners in the 1950s. Then again, his training partners were Peter Snell and Sir Murray Halberg. (Barry’s best 5000m time was 13.39 so you be the judge about his talent or lack of!!). The three Arthur Lydiard coached athletes went to the 1960 Olympic games in Rome. Expectation was high for Snell and Hallberg (which they both delivered on, winning gold within an hour of each other). But Barry was not even expected to be anywhere near the podium for the marathon.Due to the heat in Rome, the marathon time was changed to late afternoon meaning it finished in the dark (running on cobblestones with no streetlights). This meant Barry had no idea that he had won the bronze medal when he finished in pitch black in what has gone on to be known as one of the greatest marathons of the century! This is an exhilarating story of a golden era of New Zealand athletics, and it was an absolute honor to sit with Barry and have him reminisce. He still coaches to this day and can often be found at the finish line cheering on his athletes. He is a man who has devoted his life to running. This is a must listen for any history buffs or running nerds.Big thanks to the sponsor of this episode, the incredible HUAWEI WATCH GT runner. E"A Kiwi man and a Canadian man walk into a bar in Switzerland with a swan..." It sounds like the beggining of an average joke, but this actually happened! Before he was a famous Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star, Eric Murray and a mate "borrowed" a swan from a lake and took it to a bar.If you enjoy this snippet, please listen to the full interview with Eric MurrayThanks, Dom. EThis is part one of my very first ever two part podcast. Eric came over and we just yarned for over two hours so I decided to split it in two.
