Bite size: Rachel Hunter reflects on her break up with Rod Stewart
Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer as she ran along an Auckland beach. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had as a “super model.“ In this "bite size" clip taken from our full conversation, Rachel and I speak openly about her ex-husband and the father of her children, Rod Stewart,She reveals why she has never read the parts about herself in his book and reflects on that moment she told him the relationship wasn't going to last and her feeling about him now. Even though they broke up over 20 years ago, I know this is a tough subject so I can't thank Rachel enough for going back there and reflecting. If you like this bite size podcast, please go and listen to the whole conversation when you have time. S1 Ep 63ZANE ROBERTSON- A worldwide exclusive interview
On Tuesday March 22, it was announced that NZ distance runner, Zane Robertson had received a seven-year ban for failing a drug test. Four years was for taking the banned substance EPO, an additional three years was for trying to cover up his failed test. At the age of 33, this likely spells the end of his professional career.Zane and I connected to have this conversation the morning after, Thursday March 23. In this podcast, a tired and understandably emotional Zane talked openly and frankly about the announcement and the events leading up to it.To WATCH the conversation with Zane, please go to my YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSeBR950GkMVideo credit: Dougie Mackie, Damn Handsome media production. S1 Ep 64Rachel Hunter
Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had of people had as a “super model.“ So, what business does she have being on a podcast called Runners only? Glad you asked! She literally was out running when she was “discovered.”This conversation was so enjoyable. We cover a lot of ground including the moment she quit school to become a model- great story…it involves a phone call to the school office landline while she was mid math’s exam. Her reflections on Andy Hayden and how she got a gruff ex All Black to be her manager (Spoiler: it was a lot harder than you'd think). We chat about the iconic Trumpet ad, posing for Playboy and staring in the iconic Stacie’s mom music video. Why she has never read the chapter about herself in the Rod Stewart autobiography. We talk about Rod a lot…probably way more than she was comfortable with- sorry Rach!! LOLThe death of her mum, becoming a grandmother, menopause and much much more. Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Ep 6Episode 1: Mitch James
EMitch James is a well known New Zealand singer. He is also a marathon runner. But he is so much more than those things. He is one of the most authentic, vulnerable and transparent people I have ever met. A true open book. 100% BS free. There are some serious things we touch upon- including mental health and suicide. And I respect Mitch for his honesty. Warning- He DOES like to swear...so keep that in mind if you are with little kids or anyone who is easily shocked.PS: Mitch has a new song called "History" coming out later this week. Look out for it. It's probably awesome. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 51: Shane Cameron
EShane Cameron is one of New Zealands best known boxers. He is now a sucessful businessman.Shane and I sat down for this podcast way back in January. Long before the podcast “Runners Only!” even launched. Being on the cusp of being an actual boomer, I lost this entire audio file and some others…or so I thought. They turned up the other day on an SD card (long born story).Shane’s a good dude and I forgot how enjoyable our conversation was. We talk in depth about the “fight of the century” against David Tua (and how long it took him to recover mentally from the beating), Dancing with the stars, life before and after boxing, the Commonwealth games, and heaps more. Please “subscribe” if your podcast platform allows it, and it’ll be on your phone on Monday morning when you wake up.Here is the you tube link to THAT fight against David Tua which we discuss in detail:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IweZbGWpMc Hosted on Acast. Bite size: Rachel Maia.
This “bite size” podcast episode comes from my full conversation with Rachel Maia. If you like this snippet, feel free to listen to her whole remarkable story when you have a spare hour.Rach is mum of three from Whanganui. She is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. Hell of a story. She only got the leg amputated 3 years ago after sucking up a lifetime of pain from a climbing wall injury she suffered in her teens. In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. Here is a link to the “Attitude” TV segment that Rachel mentions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQhLuEMap3w Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 50: Rachel Maia
ERachel Maia from Whanganui is total bad-ass. But just DON’T call her “Inspirational.” (She explains why during our conversation). As well as being a mum to three kids, Rachel is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. What makes this even more remarkable is the backstory. When she was 16, Rachel had a freak fall from a reasonably small height at an indoor climbing wall and broke both her ankles. Then years later as an adult she decided to return to the spot she loves…even though it had, in many ways, ruined her life.In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. It’s a hell of a journey and I really hope you guys like it. Rachel Maia is a woman on a mission to remind each and every one of us that we all have unlimited potential.Need to warn you, there were a couple of sound and microphone issues with this episode. I’m so sorry about that. If you are listening with earplugs in it may not be too annoying (hopefully) but yeah, its an incredible story so I hope Rach's story is bigger than the technical difficulties.Dom Hosted on Acast. The former All Black superstar made it as far as the pre-filming stage where Jesse and the other cast members got to rub shoulders with him for around a week before he fell ill and returned home.Inga passed away shortly after that. Ep 128Episode 44: Nick Ashill (Wellington dude who completed an epic run across USA against all odds)
EIn August 2017, Nick Ashhill was 81 punishing days into his run from one side of America to the other- LA to NY- doing around 50k every day.He didn’t finish the run though. He was the victim of what he reckons was a deliberate hit and run accident from some meth head in a pick up truck that left him fighting for his life.16 surgeries and 5 years later, Nick went back to the spot of his accident to finish what he started. This is definitely one for the running nerds. But I reckon its also just a pretty interesting story about an ordinary kiwi whose done some pretty extraordinary stuff despite some serious big hurdles to overcome. Really hope you guys like this episode.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 126Bite Size: Joseph Sullivan (How he found his purpose by joining the NZ fire service after being shafted by Rowing NZ)

If you like this, maybe check out the full conversation when you have the time. After winning an Olympic gold medal for rowing in 2012 Joseph Sullivan found himself lost and in a bleak mental head space after he was pretty much shafted by rowing NZ, the organization and sport he had devoted a large chunk of his life to.In this clip, he talks about how he ended up finding his purpose again by joining the NZ fire service.Joseph is still a fire-fighter. And has also gone on to win two Americas Cup’s as a grinder for Team New Zealand. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 125Bite size: Nikki Kaye (Breast cancer survivor, former National party deputy leader)
EAt the time of posting this bite size clip from my full podcast with Nikki Kaye, it is the breast cancer pink ribbon street appeal in New Zealand (If you go past a collector, please don’t pretend you are reading something on your phone). In fact, I’d urge you to look round the house or car for any actual money- preferably notes- that you could drop in one of the buckets. In this clip, Nikk Kaye, the former National party deputy leader, talks us through her devastating diagnosis back in 2016 and the entire journey that followed. Its not an easy listen in parts, but I can't thank Nikki enough for being so open. Here are some other stats from Breast Cancer NZ. The number on the left is age by decade. The numbers on the right are the risk of breast cancer in the next ten years:20s 1 in 1,31430s 1 in 20440s 1 in 5050s 1 in 3760s 1 in 2970s 1 in 36Here is a link if you wish to make a donation anytime you like:https://www.breastcancerfoundation.org.nz/donate/donate-now Hosted on Acast. Ep 124Episoide 43: Joseph Sullivan (Olympic gold medalist, 2x Americas cup winner, fire fighter)
EJoseph Sullivan is a HERO! But I feel like he is one of those under-the-radar heroes. Where the name rings a bell, but you can’t quite recall where you know it form. And that is just the way this unassuming fire fighter and father from Bay of Plenty likes it.At the 2012 Olympics, he won a gold medal. His rowing race was so epic that he won a Halberg Award for "New Zealand's Favorite Sporting Moment".He retired prematurely in 2014 after being screwed over by Rowing NZ, something which broke him and took a while to recover from.Since then, he has found a new purpose in the NZ fire service. He got married, had 2 kids. Oh, and trained as a grinder for Team NZ and won the Americas Cup. Twice. It was such an honor to sit with Joseph at the Kawarau fire station to cover all aspects of his incredible life so far. The very high highs. And the very deep lows. Hosted on Acast. Ep 122Bite size: Zoe McBride (shares the moment she told her rowing partner they would not be going to the Olympics)
EThis bite size clip comes from my full conversation with 3x world champion rower, Zoe McBride. I do these shorter podcasts because I am aware not everyone has a spare hour to listen. If you like this, feel free to download the full episode with Zoe and save it for a later date.In this bite size clip, Zoe talks me through the moment she decided to pull out of the Olympic Games to prioritize her health. It was a decision that crushed not only her chance at Olympic gold, but also that of her rowing partner, Jackie Kiddle.Jackie is still rowing and, at the time of writing, was in Poland for the World Rowing Coastal Champs.Zoe is the healthiest and happiest she has been in years and is currently working towards a degree which is oarsome (see what I did there? One for the rowers).Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 121Episode 42: Zoe McBride (Rower who prioritzed mental health over a possible Olympic medal)
EZoe McBride was a three-time world champion for rowing. But her success came at a huge personal toll- physically first in the form of an obsession with her weight, then mentally. It all came to a head in April last year when Zoe and her rowing partner, Jackie Kiddle were gearing up for the Tokyo Olympics (where a medal was almost a certainty). They never made it to the Olympics. After endless months of wrestling with demons, Zoe made the call to put her physical and mental health first, a move that crushed not only her own Olympic dream, but Jackie’s as well. This is the incredible story of Zoe McBride- the world champion rower who prioritized her physical and mental health over likely Olympic glory. Hosted on Acast.
