Simon Cochrane ("Ultraman" world record holder)
Simon Cochrane:A week before this podcast conversation took place, Simon Cochrane travelled from his home in Hamilton NZ to take part in the "Ultraman" event in Noosa as a relative unknown in this event. After 3 days of intense and brutal racing he not only won the event, he also SMASHED the world record. The Ultraman event is a crazy few days of racing. It was created in 1983 by some mad bastards who, I'm assuming, decided the Ironman distance was too easy LOL. This is what an Ultraman weekend looks like:Day 1: 10km ocean swim and a 145km bike ride.Day 2: 276-km bike ride.Day 3: 84-km run (double marathon). This is definitely an episode for the running and multi-sport nerds. But there are takeaways in this conversation for everyone. Including time management and how to get more out of yourself every day, and how you can change your situation if you aren’t happy with it and the importance of enjoying everything you do- and how that’s a mindset you can choose. As Simon says with his endurance events: “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”Thanks very much to my pals at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode:https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Hadyn Jones (TVNZ journalist & host)
Hadyn Jones is an ultramarathon runner (that’s one of the caps he wears). He is also a well-known current affairs TV host. You may recognize the face or voice from Fair Go, Seven Sharp, the good sorts segment at the end of the news on Sunday night (a really cool feature he has done for years). He is also a dad and a husband. All roles that he juggles successfully. His secret includes getting his long runs done when the kids are in bed!We discussed his running journey, his career including his early years working with Sir Paul Holmes and the decision to relocate and work from Taranaki. We talk about his home life, his recollections from losing his dad at the age of 5 and much more. I loved sitting down with Haydn and I hope you guys enjoy it too. Thanks to Radix nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Leigh Hart (NZ TV royalty- his most raw & vulnerable interview ever)
If you say you don't know who Leigh Hart is, I'd probably raise an eye brow.He has been part of the New Zealand comedy and TV landscape for two decades now.He is also the face of Hellers sausages, the creator of Wakachangi beer and, more recently, the insanely good Snackachangi chips THE best Salt n Vinegar chips in the world).BUT whether you know him or not, I think you’ll be a fan of Leigh after this. It’s a fascinating insight into the mind of a creative genius. We get real deep and talk about his childhood which included a whole year without seeing his parents. His entire TV career and which of his old work he regrets now, and how the famous snackachngi chips came about.Lee also reflects on his marriage breakup, the resilience needed to get through it, and how he has become more emotionally vulnerable with age. This was my favourite part of the conversation. His honestly and vulnerability was profound. Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I am a daily user of their protein powder. Start every day with a shake for breakfast. Their banana flavor is incredible. They are much more than amazing and delicious protein powder though. Jono Ridler (NZ record holder for longest open water swim)
Just 4 days before recording this podcast, Jono Ridler had SMASHED the New Zealand open water swim distance record when he swam 99 kilometers (previous record was 80km)His 33 hour non-stop swim without a wetsuit started on a fine Tuesday morning and finished on a very story Wednesday night.I really hope you guys like this chat. Jono is not a big name guest…he’s just a regular guy who has done something incredible and inspiring. Actually, to give you an idea of just how regular he is, after finishing this 99km swim on Wednesday night he spent Thursday in Hospital then was back at work on Friday! . I absolutely love that- ordinary people doing extraordinary thingsThere are lots of lessons in here about staying positive and not giving up when things get hard. Even some techniques that any of us can use to achieve greatness in our own lives, whatever your goal is.Thanks very much to my mates at Radix nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Campbell Johnstone: First openly gay All Black.
Campbell Johnstone made a name for himself in NZ rugby circles as an All Black and Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000's,He made a name for himself internationally in early 2023 when he became the first ever openly gay all black. This is his story. This is as they say in rugby, a podcast of two halves- the first half zooms in on his sexuality and the second half looks back on his rugby career which included three super rugby titles. We chat about his decision to do the interview on Seven Sharp with Hilary Barry, growing up gay and his earliest sexual experiences, coming out to his parents, dabbling with the Grindr dating app and much more. Then we look back on his rugby career- his thoughts on Razor Robertson as a coach, the hilarious reaction from his dad when he told him he was an All Black, his awkward haka experiences and more.I really enjoyed Campbells company and I hope you guys love this conversation and get something from it.Thanks very much to the absolute legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I start every day with their protein powder mixed with ice cubes and a bit of trim milk. If you are not using protein powder- you should give it a go. Billy Evans (Boston police commissioner)
William "Billy" Evans. It was an absolute honor and a privilege to spend an hour with Billy Evans in Boston, just 2 days after the 2023 Boston marathon (which he ran with his two sons).Ten years ago, Billy ran the Boston marathon, then shortly after finishing, he and his entire Boston police force had to get to work to try and find out who was responsible for the two bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon. If you have seen the Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: The Boston marathon bombing” you will be familiar with Billy. He is the first face you see in episode one. He is also the person responsible for capturing one of the two bombers alive after he called for a ceasefire after an intense shoot-out on a boat.Billy has lived in Boston his whole life and spent his entire adult life in law enforcement. He is a passionate runner, husband, dad, and Bostonian. And I could not believe my luck when he kindly agreed to sit down with me while I was in his city.In our hour we talk about his relationship with running, his upbringing and losing both his parents at a young age, his decades as a cop in Boston then the Boston bombing, a case that defined his career. Thanks very much to my mates at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing incredible work with their small team from their big factory in Waikato. S1 Ep 69Suzy Cato
SUZY CATO.I think for the most part Suzy is a New Zealander who needs no introduction. Chances are if you are in your 20s or 30s now, she was a big part of your childhood (she is the undisputed queen of children’s TV in Aotearoa). In this episode, I had the pleasure of diving deep into her life and career. We explored her beginnings in radio, her transition to TV, and how she met her husband, Steve. We also discussed Susie's experiences dealing with the heartbreak of losing a baby and being let go from TV3, as well as how she bounced back from those terrible experiences. We talked about Susie's relationship with exercise and her childhood growing up in Kaikohe. We touched on Suzy’s personal experiences with prioritizing mental health, coping with grief and navigating career changes. We also discussed her stints on reality TV with Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer. She is such fun company and I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer as she ran along an Auckland beach. On Tuesday March 22, it was announced that NZ distance runner, Zane Robertson had received a seven-year ban for failing a drug test. Four years was for taking the banned substance EPO, an additional three years was for trying to cover up his failed test. At the age of 33, this likely spells the end of his professional career.Zane and I connected to have this conversation the morning after, Thursday March 23. In this podcast, a tired and understandably emotional Zane talked openly and frankly about the announcement and the events leading up to it.To WATCH the conversation with Zane, please go to my YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSeBR950GkMVideo credit: Dougie Mackie, Damn Handsome media production. Glad you asked! She literally was out running when she was “discovered.”This conversation was so enjoyable. We cover a lot of ground including the moment she quit school to become a model- great story…it involves a phone call to the school office landline while she was mid math’s exam. Her reflections on Andy Hayden and how she got a gruff ex All Black to be her manager (Spoiler: it was a lot harder than you'd think). We chat about the iconic Trumpet ad, posing for Playboy and staring in the iconic Stacie’s mom music video. Why she has never read the chapter about herself in the Rod Stewart autobiography. Ep 6Episode 1: Mitch James
EMitch James is a well known New Zealand singer. He is also a marathon runner. But he is so much more than those things. He is one of the most authentic, vulnerable and transparent people I have ever met. A true open book. 100% BS free. There are some serious things we touch upon- including mental health and suicide. And I respect Mitch for his honesty. Warning- He DOES like to swear...so keep that in mind if you are with little kids or anyone who is easily shocked.PS: Mitch has a new song called "History" coming out later this week. Episode 51: Shane Cameron
EShane Cameron is one of New Zealands best known boxers. He is now a sucessful businessman.Shane and I sat down for this podcast way back in January. Long before the podcast “Runners Only!” even launched. Being on the cusp of being an actual boomer, I lost this entire audio file and some others…or so I thought. They turned up the other day on an SD card (long born story).Shane’s a good dude and I forgot how enjoyable our conversation was. We talk in depth about the “fight of the century” against David Tua (and how long it took him to recover mentally from the beating), Dancing with the stars, life before and after boxing, the Commonwealth games, and heaps more. Please “subscribe” if your podcast platform allows it, and it’ll be on your phone on Monday morning when you wake up.Here is the you tube link to THAT fight against David Tua which we discuss in detail:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IweZbGWpMc Hosted on Acast. Bite size: Rachel Maia.
This “bite size” podcast episode comes from my full conversation with Rachel Maia. If you like this snippet, feel free to listen to her whole remarkable story when you have a spare hour.Rach is mum of three from Whanganui. She is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. Hell of a story. She only got the leg amputated 3 years ago after sucking up a lifetime of pain from a climbing wall injury she suffered in her teens. In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. Here is a link to the “Attitude” TV segment that Rachel mentions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQhLuEMap3w Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 50: Rachel Maia
ERachel Maia from Whanganui is total bad-ass. But just DON’T call her “Inspirational.” (She explains why during our conversation). As well as being a mum to three kids, Rachel is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. What makes this even more remarkable is the backstory. When she was 16, Rachel had a freak fall from a reasonably small height at an indoor climbing wall and broke both her ankles. Then years later as an adult she decided to return to the spot she loves…even though it had, in many ways, ruined her life.In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. It’s a hell of a journey and I really hope you guys like it. Rachel Maia is a woman on a mission to remind each and every one of us that we all have unlimited potential.Need to warn you, there were a couple of sound and microphone issues with this episode. I’m so sorry about that. If you are listening with earplugs in it may not be too annoying (hopefully) but yeah, its an incredible story so I hope Rach's story is bigger than the technical difficulties.Dom Hosted on Acast. Bite size: Kendra Cocksedge
On the evening of Saturday November 13, 2021, while Kendra was overseas with the Black Ferns, her sister and brother-in-law in Taranaki were dealing with the tragic news that their 18-year-old son, Jordy had drowned in the Waiwhakaiho River.Speaking to media at the time about her sons passing, Kendras sister Nic said:“He was just one of a kind. He was so loveable, so witty. Life without him is going to be dim. We still are broken, and we will be for a long time. I’m dreading the rest of my life to be fair.”In this poignant bite size clip taken from our full conversation, Kendra reflects on Jordy and how she managed her own grief while being stuck in MIQ, away from her family. It was an incredibly difficult thing to talk about so I can’t thank Kendra enough for being so open.Dom Hosted on Acast. EKendra Cocksedge was part of the Black Ferns team who just recently won the Rugby World cup in front of a packed Eden Park crowd.
