Tennis Star, Lulu Sun on Making Wimbledon Quarterfinal, Representing New Zealand & More!

Lulu Sun is currently ranked as the 40th best tennis player in the world. And she is a kiwi, born in TeAnau. She shot to fame in the middle of 2024 with an out the gate performance at Wimbledon where, after making it through the intense qualifying rounds she got into the tournament itself then kept on winning, only exiting the event after being beaten in the quarter final. And that was after beating England’s Emma Raducanu on Wimbledon’s center court. This put her in the history books as the first NZ woman to make it that far at Wimbledon and the first Kiwi in 41 years to play a single match on center court. That tournament shot her up the world rankings, saw her named as WTA newcomer of the year and earned her $780,000NZD- which was 3 times the total prize money she had won in her whole tennis career to that point.I caught up with Lulu on Boxing Day while she was back in NZ for the ASB Classic.Unfortunately, due to her hectic training schedule we only had 45 minutes. And I did a terrible job at time keeping so the conversation comes to a fairly abrupt end- sort of like a tennis match that gets rained off mid-way through the second set. Thanks so much to the sponsors of this episode, the epic team at the Generate KiwiSaver Scheme. If you set yourself up for one real easy win in 2025, it should be to take a more active interest in your Kiwisaver! Switching is super quick and easy too- I switched to Generate over a year ago and there has been no looking back. My only regret is not doing it years ago! They are a Kiwi-owned company with local advisers right across the country ready to help you. Tom Sainsbury On Being 75% Gay, Chris Parker Friendship, Jacinda Ardern Controversy & Donating Sperm

Tom Sainsbury is a comedian, actor, writer, director, podcaster. And these are just a few of the many hats he wears.I’ve been a fan of Tom’s social media videos for ages, so this was an honor to get to sit down and learn a bit more about the man behind the hundreds of characters he has bought to life.We spent the first 20 minutes talking about the inner workings of his social media sketches where he is the master of observation. He has a massive talent for mimicking the mannerisms of New Zealanders. We discuss his upbringing in rural Waikato and how being a farm kid steered him towards becoming a vegan. His sexuality. Why he is 75% gay and why he didn’t come out to his parents until he was 28.His journey as a sperm donor for a lesbian couple and his role as a biological parent. His awkward encounter with Katy Perry in Las VegasThe huge lie he told to land his first ever acting job.Why he practices Buddhism and much more.I get the feeling Tom is possibly more comfortable observing and channeling others than revealing too much of himself, so this was a real treat.I loved it and I hope you do as well. ***Tom Sainsbury and friends are on stage at Auckland's Q theatre until December 7 for "Camping"Here is the link for tickets, times, etc....https://silotheatre.co.nz/show/camping Hosted on Acast. Nigel Latta on Shocking Cancer Diagnosis, Outliving 6-12 Months' Life Expectancy, Managing Adversity

Nigel Latta, New Zealand’s best-known psychologist, shared a video to Facebook on the evening of September 5, 2024, announcing he has been living with cancer. After sharing his shocking news, he received an outpouring of love and media articles because we all feel like we know Nigel Latta- even Lorde's mum left a comment giving Nigel credit for how she raised her kids. For the past 15 years, Nigel has been responsible for some wildly successful TV projects including the Beyond the Darkland’s series (which I loved) and the politically incorrect series with episodes devoted to parents, teenagers and grown-ups. He is also the author of seven best-selling books.I had never met Nigel before this podcast but, like a lot of Kiwis, I felt like I knew him. Nigel is everybody’s mate- a national treasure. This is small part of the Nigel Latta story with a focus on lessons he has learned since the cancer diagnosis and being forced to face his own mortality. The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed in this podcast belong solely to the host and guests and may not reflect the views of the show sponsors Thanks to my show sponsors- Generate, the award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Chances are you have not been making the most of your KiwiSaver- Don’t be embarrassed, most of us are guilty of this. But checking if you’re in the right fund and making the most of your account can really boost your retirement lifestyle. And that’s where Generate can help.Their KiwiSaver advisers can meet with you in person or remotely to go over your options, and make sure your investment is working for you. It’ll take 30 minutes at most, and it could be the best investment you ever make for your future self. Cam Rodger, Managing Director of Entain in NZ - Answering Tough Questions about Betting in NZ

Cameron Rodger is the Managing Director of Entain New Zealand, that’s the company that runs the TAB and the brand new app “Betcha.”I invited Cam on for a podcast conversation because Betcha is jumping on board as a podcast sponsor. I thought it would be a good idea to put some questions to him about what Entain is doing to manage harmful gambling in New Zealand. And what sort of guard rails they have to keep the people who need help safe.I like having a small sports bet every now and then, but I am well aware that it does a lot of damage to some people so I was keen to get an understanding of the work they do. This isn’t a puff piece. But it isn’t a hit job either. Cam and Entain didn’t request the questions in advance. Nor did they ask for any content control.I found it informative, and I learned a lot and I hope you do too. This episode is not sponsored by Entain or anyone else. If this content raises any issue for you or someone you care about, get in touch with the PGF- Problem Gambling Foundation for free professional and confidential help.Freephone - 0800 664 262Text 5819Email: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. Base Jumper & Author, Sequoia Schmidt - How Losing Father & Brother in Avalanche Inspired Her

Sequoia Schmidt. Wow- where do I begin? How can you possibly give just a one paragraph intro to someone who has had such a unique and full on 33 years of life.Let’s start with the cool stuff:  After being born and raised in Napier, Sequoia set up her own publishing company in Texas at 16 and has written best-selling books. She also likes to do extreme stuff in her spare time, like base jumping, skydiving, mountain climbing, silence retreats. Then there’s the less glamourous stuff: A tumultuous childhood with family dynamics that can only be described as complicated which saw her end in foster care and ultimately moving to the US to the care of an incredible grandparent. Then losing her dad and brother to an avalanche on K2 in Pakistan in 2013 and going on a mission to find their remains. We discuss how these events reshaped her life and led her to explore her fears and resilience. And the lessons learned from her past (oh, and I forgot to mention a lifetime ban from the Warehouse in Hawkes Bay). There is a lot to unpack with the Sequoia Schmidt story, and there is no way we could do it justice in just one podcast…but we do unpack a lot. I loved this chat and I hope you do too. Thanks to the incredible team at Generate for making this episode possible. They are award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Checking if you’re in the right fund and making the most of your account can really boost your retirement lifestyle. And that’s where Generate can help.Their KiwiSaver advisers can meet with you online or in person, you place or theirs, to go over your options, and make sure your investment is working for you. Half an hour of your time and it could the best investment you ever make for your future self. Brodie Kane was one of my first guests when I launched my podcast early in 2022.Since then, we have got even closer and have become running friends. So, this is her second appearance on the podcast- but this chat is very different to the first one because my very talented mate has now gone and written a book about her life experiences- the good the bad and the ugly. Oooh there is some ugly in there! The books awesome by the way- "Woman Uninterrupted" Brodie is an open book, she is forthright, opinionated and outspoken so nothing was off the table- we cover some crunchy topics here including the public backlash she experienced as a reporter on TV, her redundancy at the start of the pandemic and how she dusted herself off and bounced back, an abortion she had in her 20s and her decision to speak about it publicly. And lots of fun stuff, including her relationship with her parents and her time in the army before getting into mediaThis chat is a celebration of resilience and self-acceptance from a woman I am lucky enough to call a good friend. Marc Moore is the founder and creative director of the fashion brand Stolen Girlfriends Club.Marc launched Stolen almost 20 years ago and is still going strong, surviving the pandemic, the GFC and all the other challenges small businesses must face. Some of the stuff we cover includes how his brand was born almost 20 years ago and the steep highs as well as the very deep lows of growing a fashion business:How it became popular with some A list celebrities, including Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd, who wore one of their tops onstage for a performance with Taylor Swift. Also, we get into some deeply personal stuff, including his early years in Raglan being raised by a solo mum and his confusing relationship with his dad, the late Marc Hunter from the rock band Dragon. This stuff is hard to talk about so I cannot thank Marc enough for being so open to sharing such personal and vulnerable topics. Before doing this episode, I knew Marc in passing and I always thought he was a cool guy. Now I know for sure he is. I hope you guys love this episode as much as I did. Michaela Blyde has just recently returned from the Olympics in Paris where she won her second gold medal, playing Rugby Sevens for the Black FernsI think this will go down as one of my favorite episodes of all time- just because of her attitude, energy, enthusiasm and authenticity. And just because she’s bloody hilarious and fun to be around. We talk a lot about her recent Olympic experience, including being drug tested immediately after winning gold and going viral after meeting her sporting idol, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (it's a great story- doesn’t get more Kiwi than this)We also talk about her upcoming wedding to another Gold medalist, her children’s book, body image, the challenges and rewards of elite training, goal setting, manifestation, journaling and so much more.Michaela is the real deal- a role model on and off the field. This episode is jam packed with cool lessons and stories. Thanks to the lovely and talented team at Generate for making this episode possible. Phoebe Harris - 22-Year-Old Kiwi Making a FORTUNE on OnlyFans

Phoebe Harris is a 22-year-old swimmer who joined the Only Fans platform in January 2022 and since then, she has done VERY well for herself. Before Only Fans she was on a WINZ benefit. Now, she earns more than the Prime Minister! So, what IS Only Fans? How much money does she make? How much of a cut do Only Fans take? What sort of backlash and stigma comes with being a success on that platform? What do her partner and parents think of it and much more! Everything you wanted to know about Only Fans but didn’t know who to ask.In this episode we get to learn a bit about Phoebe, who moved to New Zealand from England as a young girl and fell in love with swimming. And how that has led to an insanely financially rewarding career as an Only Fans creator. With her Only Fans income she has created a fitness app, become a landlord with three properties, bought her parents their dream caravan and a new car. She bought her own house at 20 with a $250,000 deposit, she got herself a brand-new Porsche for $340k! She doesn’t drive it all the time though - sometimes she drives her Nissan Navara Ute. And at the time of recording this she had just returned from a first-class trip to Europe. My goal with all these discussions is to try and get a better understanding of a person and their choices through non-judgmental long form conversation. Thanks for understanding and listening.   Hosted on Acast. Sir Graham Henry Reflects on World Cup Wins & Losses, 54-Year Marriage, Depression & More!

Sir Graham Henry (aka “Ted”) is one of the greatest All Black coaches of all time. He left the role with a win record of 85%In 2011, with a little help from his friends, he coached the All Blacks to a Rugby World Cup win, breaking a 24-year drought. This was made even more remarkable on account of a thing called The Henry clause- a rule made by the NZ Rugby union in the late 1990s to make sure Graham would never get to coach the All Blacks after he went overseas to coach Wales. We talk about that clause and so much more- his early years and how he got together with his soulmate, Raewyn. His self-diagnosed depression which saw him quit coaching in the UK, his 103-test coaching career with the All Blacks and much more.Sir Graham Henry is a sharp operator, and this was a lot of fun. For me at least. Hope you guys love it.This episode is brought to you by Generate – award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Since I’ve been working with these guys, I get messages every week from friends who have switched their KiwiSaver over to Generate and they all say the same thing- they wish they did it sooner. Most of us sign up for KiwiSaver when we start working and we just go with whatever scheme is being offered by our employers then forget about it. BUT not all KiwiSaver schemes are the same and YOU could be doing so much better!Checking if you’re in the right fund and making the most of your account can really boost your retirement lifestyle. And that’s where Generate can help.Their KiwiSaver advisers can meet with you online or in person, you place or theirs, to go over your options, and make sure your investment is working for you. Half an hour of your time and it could the best investment you ever make for your future self. My Most Chaotic Podcast Ever - Andrew Fagan, NZ Music Legend & Sailor-Adventurer Extraordinaire

Strap yourself in for a wild ride- my most chaotic podcast EVER!Andrew Fagan is a kiwi musician. In the 1980’s he was the singer of one of New Zealand’s most popular bands called The Mockers. Chances are, if you know any of their songs it’ll be Forever Tuesday Morning. But for a 12-year-old Dom Harvey. He knew every word of every song. Obsessed is a big word…but that was my relationship with this band called the Mockers. I was a psycho-fan…and I would be prepared fight anyone who dared to disagree they were the best band in the world. So, to sit down for a long conversation with one of my childhood heroes was something truly special. This is by far the most unique and bizarre podcast I’ve ever done- Andrew turned up with his own props including a flag, a stool, a bell, a water spray bottle, guitar and amp.We talk about his life in music, including those years in The Mockers- his recollections of the infamous 1984 Queen Street Riots and the deep impact of losing a bandmate to suicide. We also discuss in great length his love of solo voyages in the open ocean in small boats. Then we go deep with some musings on life, aging, mental health and future goals.Whether you're a long-time fan of The Mockers or new to wonderful world and mind of Andrew Fagan, this episode offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable New Zealander (who I am lucky to call a mate).   Hosted on Acast. This Emergency Department Doctor is Attempting to Run an Ultramarathon on Every Continent in 2024

Doctor Inia Raumati is an absolute savage- as well as being an emergency doctor in the intense Auckland Hospital, he also an inspirational adventurer who has taken part in ultra-marathon stage runs all over the world that last for a week. When we recorded this, he was halfway through an audacious goal to complete events on every continent of the world during 2024.We talk about these events in depth- the level of planning and preparation is, as you’d expect, next level. These runs are no joke…so don’t be fooled by the way he talks about them like they are no big deal! Then the professional stuff- his time as a medic in Iraq for the NZ army, his time as a volunteer for the Westpac rescue helicopter and life as an emergency doctor- including working in hospital during the pandemic, the amount of violence and anger the staff encounter every weekend and what it feels like when a patient you are working on dies and so much more. It was a fascinating insight into a world I knew nothing about from a guy who has seen it all! This chat was organized by Inia's fiancé Vicki who is my vet (well, my dogs vet). I thought it would be one for the running nerds, but it is much more than that. Inia is just a super inspiring and positive guy who is living his best life and wants to help others do the same. I loved our conversation and I hope you do too. This episode is brought to you by Generate – award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Checking if you’re in the right fund and making the most of your account can really boost your retirement lifestyle. And that’s where Generate can help.Their KiwiSaver advisers can meet with you online or in person, you place or theirs, to go over your options, and make sure your investment is working for you. Half an hour of your time and it could the best investment you ever make for your future self.Request a no-obligation chat with one of their advisers. Head to:https://www.generatewealth.co.nz/domA copy of their product disclosure statement is available on their website. UK Comedian Ed Byrne on Kiwi Quirks, Awkward Robert Downey Jr Moment on Graham Norton & More!

Ed Byrne has been on the Graham Norton show numerous times, he’s been on the late-night talk shows in America, he’s been on the Celebrity Chase…twice. And now he’s on my podcast. Very exciting for me…not so exciting for Ed!At the time of recording this (August 2024) Ed is touring NZ with his show called “Tragedy plus time.”A heartbreakingly hilarious show that deals with the death of his younger brother Paul. Reviewers have been calling it the best work of Ed's 30-year career. We talk a lot about Paul, their relationship and processing grief with humor.See him at a venue near you: https://edbyrne.com/live-dates/We discuss his very first tour of NZ way back in the late 1990s where he made nationwide news for trolling a barman- it’s a great story. Why New Zealand holds a special place in his heart and why Oamaru got a completely different Ed Byrne show to every other venue. His encounter with Robert Downey Junior when they shared the sofa on the Graham Norton show together and so much more.I loved spending this quality time with Ed Byrne, and I hope you do to. Abbas Nazari - Escaping the Taliban, Life as a Refugee in Christchurch & The Tampa Affair

ABBAS NAZARIWhen the Taliban were at the height of their power in 2001, Abbas was 7 years old. By the time he arrived in New Zealand as a refugee almost a year later, he was 8. What happened in between is nothing short of incredible. The fact the Nazari family survived the journey was one thing. But they have done much better than that- they have thrived!Abbas shares his memories of escaping the Taliban as a little boy with little more than the clothes on his back, being adrift in the middle of the Indian ocean in an overcrowded rickety wooden boat that was most definitely not sea-worthy, in fact it was literally falling apart. Then getting rescued by a big shipping boat called the Tampa and becoming part of an international standoff before finding home in NZ as a refuge.Somehow, against all odds, Abbas who spoke no English when he touched down here went on to get a podium finish in a secondary schools spelling bee, played rugby (and even claims he taught Richie Mo’unga how to kick LOL). He also got a degree, was awarded a scholarship in Washington DC and now runs his own business. That’s not all! He’s also an in demand public speaker, and he has written a great book called “After The Tampa.” Which covers his life story in much greater detail than a long form podcast can do. If you love this chat and you’re keen for more, google that. ****This episode is bought to you by Generate – award-winning KiwiSaver specialists.Myself and pretty much everyone I know has the exact same KiwiSaver experience. We signed up through work into whatever fund was on offer and gave it little or no thought after that. That’s fine- it’s better than nothing! But taking the time to make sure you’re in the right fund, and ensuring you’re maximizing your account, could really improve your lifestyle in retirement. And that’s where Generate can help.Generate have a team of KiwiSaver advisers across the country available to meet with you, chat through your options, and help you make sure your KiwiSaver investment is working for you.If you’ve never got KiwiSaver advice before, you should connect with one of their advisors. No pressure, no strings attached. Head togeneratekiwisaver.co.nz/dom/A copy of their product disclosure statement is available on their website.
