Rugby Ref Ben O'Keefe on Abuse from Chiefs Fans following Crusaders 2023 Win **RE-RELEASE**
Dr. Ben O'Keeffe is one of the best rugby referees in the world—and he's also a fully qualified doctor, specializing in ophthalmology. This episode first dropped in 2023, shortly after Ben made headlines for the intense backlash (including death threats) he received after officiating the Super Rugby Final between the Crusaders and the Chiefs. Since the Super Rugby 2025 final is again between these two fierce rivals, I thought I'd re-release the episode ICYMI the first time round. In this conversation, we unpack Ben’s unique double life as a top-level rugby referee and an eye surgeon. We talk about his journey through medicine, his passion for the game, and how he deals with pressure, criticism, and the spotlight that comes with both careers.I originally invited Ben on the podcast after his honest Instagram post went viral—calling out some of the horrific messages he received post-match. But beyond the drama, he's just a bloody inspiring Kiwi, doing incredible things with humility and focus. If you missed this episode the first time around, now’s the perfect time to catch up.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Bens Dual Career02:55 The Journey Through Medicine05:48 Transitioning from Medicine to Refereeing09:10 Balancing Rugby and Medicine12:00 The Life of a Professional Referee14:52 Understanding the Game and Its Rules18:00 Decision Making Under Pressure20:52 The Impact of Refereeing Decisions23:56 The Role of a Referee in the Game27:09 Refereeing as a Career Choice30:00 Training and Preparation for Referees33:01 The Importance of Experience in Refereeing36:16 Understanding Referee-Player Dynamics39:25 Accountability in Refereeing43:38 Review Processes and Continuous Improvement49:14 The Impact of Social Media on Referees54:57 Navigating Public Criticism and Mental Health01:01:01 The Role of Support and Community in Refereeing01:10:44 Referee Relationships with Players01:14:36 The Dynamics of Refereeing01:16:20 Nervousness and Preparation Before Games01:19:34 Emotional Challenges and Accountability01:22:21 Learning from Mistakes and Apologies01:23:49 Controversial Decisions and Their Impact01:24:51 Weird Rules and Laws in Rugby01:26:36 The Importance of the Whistle01:28:56 Referee Milestones and Achievements01:30:59 World Cup Aspirations and Team Dynamics01:33:45 Media Attention and Public Perception01:36:29 The Future of Refereeing and Safety Concerns Hosted on Acast. Struck by 110,000 Volts: Troy Hall’s Journey back From The Dead
In 2011, 22 year old Troy Hall was young, fit, and working hard to turn his life around after years of addiction and violence. Then, on a rainy day in Tauranga, everything changed: A freak accident involving overhead power lines left him clinically dead, twice. What followed was months in hospital, countless surgeries, extreme burns, the loss of body parts, and a long road through depression, trauma, and recovery. In this emotional and brutally honest chat, Troy opens up about his old life in gang culture, his near-death experience, and the grueling mental and physical recovery that followed. He talks candidly about suicidal thoughts, fatherhood, body image, self-worth, and how it’s taken him over a decade to finally feel proud of himself.I feel like the words ‘raw’ and ‘powerful’ get a bit overused in the podcast space these days. But this conversation is most definitely those things. Troy's story is one of resilience, perspective, healing, and the power of surrounding yourself with the right people. Paralysed at 16 & Surviving Suicide — Lee Warn on Marathons, Advocacy & Purpose
Lee Warn broke his back in 1989 when he was 16 years old. For 5 years after that he became, understandably, a depressed and angry young man. And what he has done in the three decades since then is pretty cool: + Last year he took part in the London and New York marathons…dressed in a squirrel suit, complete with the big squirrel head (because doing 42km in a wheelchair in activewear is not difficult enough!)+ He has done the Sky Tower stair climb challenge 5 times. That’s 52 flights of stairs each time.+ He has also done a wheelchair bungy and rode his chair the 160km round Lake TaupoThese physical challenges are an example of the sort of person Lee Warn is, but he is so much more than wacky endurance events. Mark Hunt is one of the toughest fighters to ever step into a ring or octagon. This episode needs to come with a very strong warning. There is a lot of coarse language. Also, other themes which could be unsuitable for some: drugs, alcohol, gambling, violence, and extreme childhood trauma. None of this is done in a gratuitous way- Marks life has been one of extreme highs and lows and he is a man who doesn’t shy away from any of it. I’ve included a list of helpful resources at the bottom of this page in case any of the content covered raises concerns for you or someone you care about. Some of the subjects we cover include his ongoing legal battle with UFC which stems from his staunch anti-doping stance. This legal is stuff has been consuming Marks life in recent years and that becomes very clear during this podcast.Beyond that we talk about his future aspirations in philanthropy and business. His horrific childhood, forgiveness towards his abusive parents and breaking free from past traumas that shaped himLessons from imprisonment as a young man.His reflections on dealing with various addictions.Lessons from therapy and much more.My goal with all these discussions is to try and get a better understanding of a person and their choices through non-judgemental conversation. FastCast: Mitch James from Episode 1 to Mark the Podcasts Third Anniversary.
The FastCast is a highlights length version of a previously released episode of The Dom Harvey Podcast. Today we are winding the clock back all the way to March 2022 and the very first episode of my podcast with NZ musician Mitch James. You can hear the full episode here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCBiUfCn2g0March 2025 marks the 3rd anniversary of my podcast and in that time, I’ve been lucky enough to connect with some of New Zealand’s most successful, fascinating and well-known people. Mitch James was one of the guests that agreed to do an episode before the podcast even existed, so I’ll be eternally grateful for that. He came round to my apartment, and we sat at the dining room table with this new tech equipment that I had bought but wasn’t even entirely sure how to operate. This FastCast is the first 15 minutes of episode one exactly as it was published- including my introduction, the original theme music and the beginning of my conversation with Mitch James.
