Election season concluded and the calendar year has nearly expired, but there's no end in sight for the bedlam of 2020. Scores of listeners reported being badgered about the U.S. presidential election by co-workers. A number of listeners even reported being lured in making statements on the election and which candidate they supported. Not one person reported getting a raise, promotion or extra hand sanitizer after disclosing their views. We barely survived the rona, a slightly blunted but still plenty tacky Halloween, only to have the full escalation of holiday season. Wilkerson can stuff a storage area and a luggage set with the numerous (and well-earned) prizes she's garnered - often for writing about the mistreatment of black people. The Warmth of Other Suns is beloved by President Barack Obama and Gus T. Renegade alike. However, Caste is a shameful, pathetic offering and is cemented as the 2nd worst book Gus has read. The word "caste" is in the text more than 1,000 times according to word count - this does not include the title of the text. It frequently seems like one of the primary objectives of this text is to get black people to use the word "caste" as oppose to Racism/White Supremacy. During last week's section of the text, Wilkerson continued her pattern of not naming black male victims of Racism. Earlier in the text, she references Thabo Sefolosha's police beating without naming the NBA star. More recently, she described the 2018 police killing of Botham Jean in Texas. He too went unnamed. This is in contrast to the earlier name dropping of Heather Hayer - a White Woman killed in Charlottesville. Additionally, Wilkerson posits that White Women are also victims of "discrimination," but she offers no data to explain who is abusing White Women or how their situation compares to the caste oppression inflicted on black people. Wilkerson adds more personal anecdotes on ways she has been a victim of caste. She details how a dominant caste male molested her while on board a flight. She makes precise mention of how the lead black male flight attendant was worthless in helping her. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Professor Paul Ortiz. The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program and associate professor of history at the University of Florida, Professor Ortiz teaches undergraduate courses and supervises graduate fields in African American history, Latina/o & Latinx history, comparative ethnic studies, U.S. South, labor, social movement theory, oral history, digital humanities, ethnography and other topics. His 2006 publication, Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920, was awarded the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Book Prize. Gus discovered Professor Ortiz's work while reading Isabel Wilkerson's Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Caste references the history of White Terrorism against black people who attempted to vote. Specifically, Wilkerson cites Ortiz's research on the 1920 Ocoee, Florida massacre - where dozens of black people were murdered for attempting to vote. New York public radio reports that although many workers aren't trekking to the job site, workplace bullying and harassment continues. This week television and film mogul Shonda Rhimes reported her exit from ABC network where she produced years of acclaimed television content and made Whites at the network billions. Even so, they were reluctant to compensate Rhimes for her historic accomplishments and got tacky and cheap about a $150 Disney World pass. A New York Times report suggested that a number of White people are reporting loneliness and isolation after months of social distancing and remote work. In addition to minimizing the role of Racist Women, Wilkerson continually posits that poor White people are tricked into working against their own interest and blaming their tribulations on dark people. The book examines how the burger conglomerate became entrenched in black residential areas and the struggles black franchise owners encountered - being restricted to poor locations for stores, getting restaurants with higher overhead, and being left out of national advertising campaigns. Fast forward, and McDonald's is facing a billion dollar lawsuit from 52 ex-franchise owners. The Victims allege they experienced White Supremacy/Racism for decades that was so crippling, one litigant said, "That acquiring a location from McDonald's was a 'financial suicide mission.'"
