Siddharth Mhatre is naturally right-handed. His father is a big Brian Lara fan. So, when Siddharth started batting at 3, his father taught him how to bat left-handed. Now he is an elegant south-paw batter. Similarly, he is naturally an off-spinner. But one day when there were no left-arm spinners in his college nets, he tried his hand at bowling left-arm spin and bowled fairly well. Seeing his accuracy, his coach encouraged him to bowl left-arm spin. Today, looking at the batter in front, Siddharth can seamlessly switch between bowling off-spin and left-arm orthodox spin. He grew up in Uran in Raigad district. The proximity to Mumbai led him to play most of his age-group cricket in Mumbai but he never really got an opportunity in Mumbai’s ultra-competitive environment. He moved to Maharashtra and had an impressive 2023 Maharashtra Premier League (MPL). He even made his debut for the state in all three formats last season. Pratik Athavale would refuse to go to bed as a kid because he always wanted to play a game of cricket with his father before sleeping. One day a game of Gully cricket resulted in a few broken window panes and his father sent him to a cricket ground. That’s how his cricketing journey started. He played for Nashik District Cricket Association in invitation matches of Maharashtra Cricket Association. He represented Pune University at university level and even went to Mumbai to play in Kanga League. However, when he realised that opportunities won’t come his way in Indian cricket, he took the opportunity that came his way. He took a job in Oman and started playing cricket in that Gulf country. His performances meant that he was selected for the national team as soon as he became eligible to play. Pratik repaid the faith shown by Oman and helped them secure a ticket to the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA. Oman are in the same group as the defending champions England and Australia and that still feels like a dream for Pratik. However, he is determined that Oman isn’t there just to make up the numbers. The selection committee meeting for Team India’s World Cup squad is always up for a huge debate. The deadline to submit the preliminary squad is May 1 and the team news could be out anytime soon. Only a handful of players are certain of their berth in the World Cup squad, but there could be some jostling for remaining positions. Sanjay Dhas knew that if he were blessed with a baby boy, he would name him after legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar. He did name his son - Sachin. He probably had foreseen that Sachin Dhas would become a cricketer as well. Sachin remembers playing with only bat and ball, nothing else. He started playing cricket at four and played his first invitation match at six. Coming from a small village like Beed, he rose through the ranks of age-group cricket in Maharashtra. With his unmistakable talent, he was named in the India squad for the U-19 World Cup. India lost the World Cup final to Australia but Sachin was one of the standout performers of the tournament. All three players hail from Gujarat. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were scouted and signed by Mumbai Indians and they’re integral to Mumbai’s success. Vishwanath ‘Vishu’ Jadhav used to play under-arm cricket as a kid and always wanted to be a batter. He often used to accompany his local team to cricket games but never liked it when he was used just as a fielder. Even then he was clear about two things - he enjoys batting and he doesn’t enjoy studying. Vishu used to roll his arm in practice and would do well against left-handed batters. But one day he was asked to defend a small total against a south-paw batter and he managed to do that. That’s how he became an all-rounder. Hitesh Walunj picked up cricket in his school days and would train at Nehru Stadium in Pune. In academically crucial class X, he asked his parents to let him continue his cricket and as a trade-off, he carried his books around in the kit bag under the pretext of studying. But books never came out of the kit bag as Hitesh had set his mind on a cricket career. He progressed through club cricket and made his Maharashtra debut in the 2018-19 season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But he had to wait till the 2023-24 season to get his Ranji cap. Shrikant Jadhav grew up in a small village in Ahmednagar district. A certificate of appreciation at the hands of a chief guest in school on Independence Day was a big deal for him at that time. As his game flourished, he moved to Mumbai to compete in Professional tournaments. The journey hasn't been easy by any stretch of the imagination. Shrikant had to pull out of the first two seasons of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) because of injuries. That's when the reality hit him hard. Pacer Prem Devkar began his cricketing journey at 13, playing tennis ball cricket in the backyard with his brothers. Even though he tasted success in that format he always aspired to play ‘leather ball’ cricket. But, in Dombivali, he did not get as many opportunities as he would’ve liked.
