EP 54: How to Cope With “Beach Body” Triggers & Appreciate the Skin You Are in This Summer
It's the first Monday of July, & you know what that means....SUMMER! Summer can be the BEST time & also one of the most triggering when you are in recovery from disordered eating. Diet culture screams weight loss plans, beach bods & fitspiration. July 4th brings fireworks, events with family....& FOOD. The truth is... summer can be super triggering! With less clothing & the fear of what other people may think of you...it's legit hard. According to researchers, 90% of women are disappointed with their bodies (especially in the summertime!) Isn't that stat insane? If you are there right now, give yourself grace sister. I see you. I spent so many summer's fueled by coffee & the desire of perfection. I spent so many summer's STARVING & miserable. I spent so many summer's completely obsessed with my body & counting every single morsel of food that entered my mouth. It was exhausting. Until I decided enough was enough. Girl, your summer body is the body that you have right now! Can you appreciate it? You don't have to LOVE your body, but you can nourish it & respect it. EP 53: What to Do When ”the Voice” in Your Head Gets Louder & Louder? + 7 Tips to Stay Grounded in Your Truth

The truth, according to researchers is that over 90% of individuals with an eating disorder, or those who suffer from disordered eating, experience a self-critical inner voice that can be distinguished from self-critical thoughts or cognitions. According to an article in medium.com, researchers have proposed that as the illness progresses, these unhealthy thoughts (thoughts that motivate eating disordered behavior's which may initially have seemed reasonable or even desirable) are replaced by the experience of hearing a ‘voice’ that is threatening & abusive, dictating & compelling the person to act in ways they recognize are unreasonable & which cause them significant distress. EP 47: The Relationship Between OCD & Eating Disorders + Research & Stats on the Distinctions & Similarities
Happy Thursday! Have you ever wondered if you have OCD? Do you frequently find yourself having intrusive, repetitive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviors? Maybe you experience ongoing anxiety associated with obsessions? When most people think about eating disorders they focus primarily on food restriction, over-consumption or unhealthy patterns, such as, binging, purging, over-exercising, etc., but is there a relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder & disordered eating? Researchers & clinicians believe there is much overlap between ED & OCD. In fact, according to the international OCD foundation, 64% of individuals diagnosed with eating disorders also have at least one anxiety disorder, & roughly 41% have OCD. Both OCD & ED are tied back to one word: control! But just because you exercise excessively or you restrict your food intake, doesn't mean you also have OCD. In today's episode I share research with you & some of the similarities & distinctions between obsessive-compulsive disorder & eating disorders. And while I WILL NOT proclaim to have any clinical background, what I do share is all available out there on the google & also represents my personal experience with exploration in understanding & educating myself on OCD & the relationship with my own past struggle with anorexia. Hey Girl! Happy Monday! I hope you had such a blessed Easter weekend. While my boys were running around on candy fumes, I was preparing for the week ahead. In today's episode I share with you how to be a boss of your morning with 8 things that I do daily for my AM routine. I admit, I am NOT a morning person. But, I AM A BOSS of my mornings! In today's show, I share Mel Robbins, 5-Second Rule & High-Five Habit, which are both strategies that I implement in my own morning routine. Girl, your mood in the morning matters. & yes, you still may need that cup of coffee to get your feet on solid ground, but it's time to set the intention of the day before the day sets you (with or without your coffee)! EP 28: The Link Between ADHD & Disordered Eating + Transparency Into My Adult Diagnosis
Do you constantly struggle with feeling overwhelmed? Maybe you forget things, lack concentration or focus, or even find yourself distracted with daydreams & desires that you just can't seem to DO anything about? Today I share with you my personal experience with ADHD & the self-awareness it gave me being diagnosed as an adult. While it may seem unrelated & yet I never seemed to put the pieces together that my battle with an eating disorder could in fact have a direct correlation to ADHD, researches have discovered a link between the two mental health illnesses. In fact, statistics show that those with ADHD are at risk for developing an eating disorder 3 to 6 times higher than the average of someone without ADHD. But what is the link between the two mental conditions? According to Community Health Network, "A study showed that images of food stimulated the brain’s reward center at a higher level in people with ADHD than people in the same study who do not have been diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, the researchers discovered that this brain response could be why having ADHD increases the risk of developing an eating disorder. ADHD is often associated with irregularities in how the brain interprets signals and cues from the rest of the body. For instance, signals about hunger become distorted in those with ADHD. This can make it challenging to know when to stop eating or the opposite. Many people with ADHD are extremely sensitive; this sensitivity is called hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity is characterized as being extremely sensitive to the physical senses such as smell, taste, touch, or even the surrounding environment. As a result, A hypersensitive person with ADHD could have more difficulty eating certain foods than someone who does not have ADHD. This can lead to food restriction behaviors & binge purge episodes." If you struggle with symptoms of ADHD, or you have been diagnosed, I truly feel today's show with bless you. According to Johns Hopkins, NEDA, ANAD & others, eating disorders are on the rise since Covid & they have no gender, ethnic, or socioeconomic prerequisite across those who struggle. it’s important that you know today that eating disorders aren’t a choice, behavior problem, or lack of willpower. An eating disorder is an illness with biological & genetic roots that are influenced by culture, belief & IMO unfortunately social media! EP 22: Do You Struggle With Excessive Exercise? How Yoga Gave Me Freedom & Permission to Get Off the Treadmill
Today's episode is all about excessive exercise & exercise addiction. & while an addiction to exercise may not be a noted clinical addiction, researchers do believe that the impacts of excessive exercise on the body have just as many harmful affects as other restrictive behaviors for those who struggle with control around food & body image. I discuss what exactly makes the very thing we view as "healthy" so very "unhealthy". I also share my story & struggle with exercise addiction & obsession with all the "cardio queen" shenanigans. If you find yourself constantly exercising or finding ways to exert energy as a means or lever to manipulate caloric intake or manage your body weight unrealistically, then this episode is for you! I touch on the intuitive principles that healed my unhealthy relationship with food & my body. & I share the impact that yoga had during my recovery from my eating disorder. & while I may claim freedom from food currently controlling my life, I will forever owe a portion of my story to the practice of mindfulness & yoga. In fact, I continue to practice yoga in my every day routine because I truly believe that the intuitive practice gave me the permission I needed to experience peace & freedom, even during my hardest days of healing.
