EP 149: The Most Powerful Commitment You Will Ever Make With You ~ It’s Time to Stand in Agreement!
Hi friend! So before I bring you all the truth bombs on this Monday, I want you to know just how much I am thankful for you! It's days like today, where I am reminded how blessed I truly am. It's days like today, where I get to show up here for you & remind you how blessed you truly are too! Yesterday at my oldest son's baseball tournament, I got the opportunity to talk about Her Best Self Co. & all that we are doing in the business to love on women all across the globe. I felt empowered, honored & proud to share love on another woman as I cheered my son on from the sidelines. It was a remarkable day! But I was reminded that not so long ago, I myself was trapped. I had to hit rock bottom & rebuild my life...I had to make an AGREEMENT with me. Fast forward to the present, I'm in awe of how amazing it is to love on you sweet friend & provide inspiration to you. Inspiration that I longed for when I was struggling with my eating disorder. ~ Oh, & yes, I forgot to mention my son's team won the big trophy & you would have thought it was one million dollars in cash! Those 10 year old faces dripped with sweat & bliss. They were champions! Winners! They grew a little bit wiser & with a little more confidence, as they cheered, huddled & cried on the field after the game. But before they became champions, they had to stand in agreement of exactly what they wanted. & the same goes for you sis! Today on the podcast, I share with you the MOST powerful commitment you will EVER make with you! This one is oh so good! I'm bringing you some Beatles on this Monday morning! ~ No, not the kind my 6 year old finds crawling in the backyard, the actual BEATLES! Okay, let me explain! We like to dance party in our house! & this morning while we were making breakfast & singing our hearts out the song, "Let It Be", by the Beatles came on. It goes something like this... "And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me, shine until tomorrow, let it be." When I sang those words I realized that I MUST do a podcast episode on the power of "letting be". ~ In Episode 143, I share with you my 5 question framework to ground yourself as you heal from restriction & control. You see, letting go is inspiration & means pure & total release. But that can feel heavy when you are navigating freedom from disordered eating. Reality is, if you knew how to let go, you probably would have by now...am I right? In my own recovery, I would surrender control only to pick it up again the next day. This year is flying by! How is it going for you sis? The truth over here is we are one baseball weekend to the next & I am doing my best to keep up with both boys, while granting myself permission to rest at the same dang time. I'm sure you feel me. My biggest advice: snacks on snacks! This baseball mom must have all snacks on deck for survival in the busy season. But it wasn't always that way for me....you see, I used to avoid snacks. I would tell myself that I could snack but only instead of eating a real meal. Snacks seemed scary. What changed? Well, I knew if I wanted to get somewhere I hadn't gone, then I had to do something that I hadn't done. So I followed my dietician's advice, & I packed snacks with me every time I left the house, so that I would never be in the position to skip eating. EP 130: Are You on an Emotional Rollercoaster With Constant Mood Swings? 5 Stages You Must Go through to Cope With the Loss of Self
Happy April Fools Day! I'll be honest, I'm not the best with jokes, but there was a time where I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster kidding my own self that freedom from my eating disorder actually existed. My mood swings were off the charts. When I felt controlled by my disorder I would lash out at the people I loved & when I felt I had control over my eating I would feel a false sense of satisfaction & happiness. It was a whirlwind. ~ Here is the TRUTH for you today sister, in order to find freedom you MUST move from the valley of denial to the hilltops of acceptance. The journey will feel like a rollercoaster at times....this is normal. If you have struggled for years, just know that you have masked your emotions for far too long & it can feel really hard to acknowledge that in order to step forward you must first pull back the layers & understand that YOU ARE NOT your unhealthy behaviors. You are not the eating disorder. You will go through phases of grief & loss...maybe even depression. I sure did. But the important thing to recognize, is that this process will NEED to happen, it's just part of healing...& at times it sucks! You see, grief gets a bad name, this is because you have to feel feelings of loss that once brought you comfort. But with grief is also the opportunity to create something brand NEW. I'm so excited for you to do just that! ~ It's time you tell that voice inside of your head to sit down & shut up! As you step into your very best self, she isn't coming. She doesn't have a reservation at your table. One thing I know for sure: My scars may not be physical, but they tell a story from my past. They now remind me of when life tried to take me out....but didn't. Hey girl, How was your St. Patty's Day? We spent time looking for 4 leaf clovers, eating green donuts & cheering on our favorite little leprechaun at his first baseball tournament of the season. Yep, it was a pretty busy weekend for the Nichol crew. However, the one thing that I'm most proud of is honoring my body in the midst of all the fun events WITHOUT the fear of gaining weight. You see, gaining weight use to be my biggest fear. I mean, flying in a plane was also scary. & snakes, well I'm terrified of those as well. But, nothing was as frigtening to me than gaining weight. & even when I knew I needed to gain weight for my health...it was the ONE thing I just couldn't seem to get past. ~ Maybe you have this same fear. Maybe you live in the same thought cycle that I experienced, where every single food choice you make on the daily is centered around whether or not if will make you gain weight. This thinking is all wrong. This thinking is keeping you stuck. But you can decide to change your mind at any given moment. ~ Reality is, being small doesn't make you better. Being small doesn't make you more worthy. Being small doesn't mean you will have a more prosperous life. ...it's actually the exact opposite. Your life doesn't grow when your body shrinks...you just learn to tolerate the misery of running on fumes...until one day you just can't. You see sis, your life grows when you choose to not be measured by unhealthy standards of this world. Your life grows when you decide to honor your body, face your fear & show up for yourself in your authentic truth. The biggest lie that I believed was that a smaller me was a better me. Don't you dare believe that lie friend! A smaller you is definitely a different you....but it won't make you any better. ~ The BEST version of you is the version that lives unrestricted. The BEST version of you is the version that lives without controlling your weight. ~ You deserve a life, FREE from the controlling chains & fears of gaining weight. Hey there! Spring has almost sprung! I do feel however that my flowers are confused with all the changing temps here in Virginia. Changing seasons can be just what you need sometimes, but they can also mean hustle & "doing more"....oh how my boy mom heart feels this one (enter -> travel baseball has now taken back over our weekends!) If you have been finding it hard to rest these days, I so feel you! Does the thought of giving yourself a break seem hard right now? Do you guilt yourself or feel "lazy" if you allow yourself to just "be"? ~ For years, I believed if I relaxed, slowed down, took or break or didn't exercise every single day, then that meant I was lazy. My eating disorder wanted me constantly going, doing, accomplishing and controlling. I glamourized the fact that if I was in constant motion then I was always burning calories. So much so, I would do random crunches at all hours of the day & even eat standing up. I became so obsessed in the disorder, that I had convinced myself I was wrong. I was bad. I was a slacker. Not only did this lead to exhaustion & total collapse of my body, but I lost joy. Happy new day of a brand new week! If you have been feeling down & out lately, overcome & overwhelmed by the controlling thoughts & behaviors around food & your body....today is your day! You must move from focusing on triggering emotions to more positive ones. You must hope when you feel all hope is gone. The sad truth however is that this is HARD. & it takes time! & not everyone recovers from an eating disorder. But all it requires is a small glimmer of that hope inside of you to decide that you want more for your future. It's a choice to stop settling & start LIVING! It's hard navigating freedom from disordered eating when you are constantly faced with triggers left & right. That is why in order to escape you must be intentional in searching for glimmers. Glimmers are sparks of positive emotions. Hey there sister friend! I hope your week is off to a great start! Mine? Well, let's just hope it's better than yesterday. Yesterday, my 5 year old had a full blown melt down. The type of meltdown where there is absolutely nothing you can do as a mama, but hug, count and wait for it to pass. Yep, I nearly had a meltdown trying to calm him from his own meltdown. But right in the middle of this situation I realized that his sweet little self just needed to pause and take a time out to reflect on what it is that he actually needed. He needed to HALT. He needed to process. He needed to feel. ~ Are you facing challenging emotions? Do those feelings cause you to turn to food or to restrict your food? Oh girl, how I can relate! ~ Disordered eating isn't about food. Disordered eating isn't about body image. Disordered eating is an attempt to deal with emotions that manifest into idols and obsessions over time when left unprocessed. It's feelings left unfelt. It's coping gone wrong.... But there is good news! Having an unhealthy relationship with food is a learned behavior. Which means it can be unlearned when you choose to release it.
