Ep 199Dr Jen Gunter | The Menopause Manifesto
Dr Jen Gunter returns to the podcast to discuss all things menopause; the biology of it and the narrative around it.In researching her latest book, The Menopause Manifesto, it struck Jen how the patriarchal narrative around menopause was actually hindering women, which is why the book became a manifesto to empower women with accurate information around what happens to their bodies during this time.As she says in the show, ‘it shouldn’t be an act of feminism to understand menopause, but it is’. During this conversation, @drjengunter and I discuss:Why it’s so wrong to think of your last period as an expiry date on your femininity. Why being empowered and making empowered choices requires access to accurate information. Why a patriarchal society doesn’t get to determine a woman’s worth. The lifestyle choices you make in your 20s and 30s that can positively impact your long-term health and your menopause experience. Why life can be better post-menopause.How pseudo-science and snake oil have nothing to offer you other than to take your money. The role of supplementation is treating menopause symptoms and whether anything will actually work.Plus, many mentions of Thor, Chris Hemsworth, Gal Gal Gadot and Idris Elba. The Menopause Manifesto by Dr Jen Gunter is available now.The Vagina Bible by Dr Jen Gunter is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Beauty Special | Getting to know CeraVe with Tom Allison
This episode is brought to you in collaboration with CeraVe.In this beauty special, we’re going to hear the story of CeraVe from its co-founder and Senior Vice President of Global Professional Marketing, Tom Allison. CeraVe is the US skincare brand that has achieved cult status in the States and now, here in the UK. What makes it so special is something we’re going to unpick with Tom in this episode, but for me, the fact it’s developed with dermatologists goes a long way to explain, not only its cult status but the reason it’s known for being such an efficient and reliable range of products. In this episode, Tom reveals where CeraVe started, and why helping people to achieve healthy skin with efficient and proven ingredients has always been at the brand’s core. Tom also explains why working with dermatologists is such a vital element of the brand’s story, so much so they even say it in the logo, and we also venture into the challenges and hurdles CeraVe had to overcome in order to get to where it is today. When you start off on the bottom shelf in the pharmacy, it takes a lot to get up to eye level…We also take a deep dive into the ceramide formula that’s the beating heart of every CeraVe product and why it’s such a crucial component, not just in the lotions and creams, but also for overall skin health - and how it’ll make your skin feel.Tom also walks us through making CeraVe so accessible via communication, application and cost.if you’re keen to find the CeraVe range you can find it in-store at Boots and also online at boots.com.Follow CeraVe on Instagram at @cerave and @ceraveuki To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Ep 197Frances Edmonds | How to Change Your Life
Frances Edmonds is a speaker and author who joins me on the show to share the steps to reinvention. If you feel stifled, stuck or claustrophobic in your professional or personal life then you may need to 'repot your life', as Frances describes it, because you have become 'potbound'.In this episode, we discuss the why and how to reframe your thinking, reset your purpose and rejuvenate yourself over and over again. If you're risk-averse then the idea of constantly changing and starting from scratch might seem foolhardy, but given that we're living decades longer than ever before in a world that's innovating and advancing faster than it ever has done, being on a path that involves change and learning is one where you are less likely to be left behind. In this episode, Frances and I discuss:Why repotting is all about learning how to manage life’s transitions and changes and how empowering it is when you realise a situation you are in is suboptimal in order to move away from it. We also discuss how important it is to get to know yourself and your patterns so you can name the behaviours that might be limiting you, accept them and change them. We talk about how failure is one of life’s greatest teachers - not that we should all go out and try to fail - but if it happens, and you can look at it objectively and see what went wrong, you can move forward with great purpose. Frances also champions the growth mindset, the three Hs of humility, humanity and humour and why you get to choose your genre and why having a purpose is so important. And much much more...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. Ep 196Grace Beverley | Working Hard/Hardly Working
Grace Beverley is an entrepreneur, brand founder, influencer, author and Oxford University graduate who joins me on the podcast to talk about her book Working Hard/Hardly Working.Right now we’re being bombarded by messaging that tells us to always be working and to never be working. You know the kind of messaging that's telling you to 'hustle' one minute then go on a digital detox the next. It's confusing and unhelpful, but this massive contradiction is a good starting point for a wider, and hopefully more helpful discussion, around working hard and hardly working. In this episode, Grace and I discuss:The reductive binary of work/life balance. The damage done by the conflicting messages of hustling and working vs resting and relaxing. How burnout and over-stretching yourself can be seen as badges of honour in the current framework of what work looks like. How the concept of hard work has changed completely in the last few decades making overworking easier than it has ever been before. What she learned from a life in corporate and what she does and doesn’t apply from it in her own businesses. The way we make work and success look aspirational yet it’s so far removed from reality. Why even a job you love can feel like a chore at times (and that’s no bad thing).Success and why it’s not a destination but a course that you’re constantly having to course-correct.The value in internalising your success. How to appropriately delegate and so much more...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Is the concept of 'manifesting' a load of rubbish?
In this Bullet Points episode, I ponder manifesting and whether simply 'asking' the universe for something will actually deliver it.I was seduced by this idea of manifesting my dreams around ten years ago when people around me, who appeared to be enjoying and succeeding at life were saying how this was a huge part of their lives and was leading them to achieve everything they set out. I tried it too, but was missing a crucial component...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Recovery is not Linear
This week’s mid-week Bullet Points episode is a confession.Well, more to the point, it’s an honest account of being in recovery and how this idea of being ‘fixed’ or ‘over it’ is completely false.I’m in recovery from binge-eating disorder after identifying it as an issue I was struggling with two years ago. I’ve put in a lot of graft - mental, emotional and physical - to get to a place where I no longer feel panicked around and dependent on food or uncomfortable in my own skin because of my self-sabotaging behaviours with food. What a cycle to be caught in!However, I had a setback recently and I thought it might be helpful to be honest with you about it. If you follow me here it could look as though I’ve figured it all out, but it’s a work in progress. For months I’ve felt completely free of all the old feelings I had but last weekend I spent 48 hours in a pit of self-hatred, self-sabotage and confusion.Rather than see it as a negative, I’ve decided to see it as a positive and I explain why in the show.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Ep 191The Rosacea Episode with Lex Gillies
ERosacea is much more than a skin condition.Lex Gillies joins me on the podcast to explain what it’s like living with and managing rosacea. Lex was diagnosed with rosacea 16 years ago and has been blogging about skin and rosacea on her blog for nearly ten years. As with anyone with rosacea it’s a case of learning how to manage your own skin, identifying your triggers and finding the products that work for you. That is, however, only one part of the issue. Having a visible skin issue doesn’t just affect the skin and in this episode Lex explains how the severity of her rosacea, at diagnosis, left her feeling less able to participate professionally and socially. Not to mention the effect it had on her confidence and self-esteem.In this episode, @talontedlex and I discuss:What rosacea is, why it can go undiagnosed and why each person’s rosacea is so unique. Why learning to manage rosacea entails trial and error and requires a holistic approach. The idea of a cure-all or magic bullet solution being a myth. How Lex’s own experience with rosacea affected her confidence. Why creating talontedlex.co.uk helped her but has gone on to help thousands of followers. How becoming a trusted resource for all things rosacea is a responsibility she takes very seriously, and much more…To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Dr Gemma Newman joins me on the podcast to discuss the many health benefits of a plant-based diet.Gemma has nearly 20 years’ experience as a family doctor, is a member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and is on the board of Plant-Based Health Professionals UK.I’m moving towards a more plant-based diet because the evidence shows it can have a significant improvement on all sorts of health issues. From reducing inflammation, slowing the ageing process, reducing the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, reversing and preventing diabetes, reducing symptoms of the menopause, strengthening the immune system, alleviating symptoms of arthritis, lupus and MS, and much more. It’s a fascinating area of research and Gemma is a wonderful resource, not least because she has observed significant improvements in her own health from switching to a Whole Foods Plant-Based diet. However, changing the way you eat is no small feat and you’d be right to have questions. In this episode, @drgemmanewman and I discuss:What a whole foods plant-based diet (WFPB) means and what it looks likes. Why eliminating meat doesn’t mean you won’t be getting enough protein in your diet - and other ‘deficiency’ myths around cutting out meat. Why diets are short-term and WFPB is something to apply in the long-term as a way of life. The confusing messaging coming from the food industry. The impact changing your diet can have on stress and anxiety. The macro and micronutrients of a WFPB diet and where supplementation is and where it isn’t appropriate.Gemma’s wish for us to move towards conservation agriculture.Food freedom and intuitive eating. Her thoughts on ‘healthy at any size’, and much more…To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Can you have 'burnout' in lockdown?
Can you have burnout in lockdown? Are you at the end of your rope? Have you had it up to ‘here’? Are you over it? Are you just so plain exhausted that you just can't be bothered?I don’t know about you, but all the things that used to push me to this feeling haven’t been present in lockdown. I’m no longer rushing, catching trains, trying to keep appointments and juggling a work and social life. I haven’t gone far or done much outside of my home in nearly a year yet I’m feeling similar feelings to those I’ve felt when I’ve previously burnt the candle at both ends. But how?As I started to investigate what burnout really feels like, what it means, how you get it and how to avoid it, I came across some interesting facts. In this new episode, I talk about why burnout is actually pretty specific, why the language around feeling overworked, exhausted and tired makes matters even more complicated and why now is a good time to give yourself a break.Burnout: The High Cost of Achievement by Herbert Freudenberger The Imposter Cure by Dr Jessamy Hibberd Burnout: Solve your Stress Cycle by Emily NagoskiBurnout Survival Kit: Instant Relief from Modern WorkUntamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living by Glennon DoyleTo join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! EWim Hof is a Dutch extreme athlete, adventurer and world record holder who created The Wim Hof Method to help people unlock a host of physical and mental health benefits. While Wim is an extreme athlete who has climbed into the Death Zone of Mount Everest and completed a full marathon above the polar circle in just a pair of shorts, his method is accessible to anyone. It’s based on three pillars: cold therapy, breathing and commitment and with consistent practice Wim has shown its ability to increase energy, improve sleep, reduce stress, heighten focus and determination, increase willpower and strengthen the immune system. And for anyone who, as I often as my guests on the podcast, wants to see the data, he welcomes scientists to scrutinise and validate his claims. In this episode @iceman_hof and I discuss:The power and fortitude that exists within us all and how to access it.How the benefits he felt from cold exposure and breath work is now being validated in labs under clinical supervision. He isn’t a ‘freak of nature’ anyone can do what he does. Why a ‘cold shower a day keeps the doctor away’.How forcing yourself to experience discomfort, such as cold, only amplifies the pleasure you feel from the warmth. Why it’s vital not to limit yourself; sometimes pushing your limits is where you find out who you are.Why failure is a vital part of life and how to handle it and learn from it when it happens, and so much more…Please use caution and seek advice, where appropriate, when attempting any exercises, especially in water.Further reading on Wim and The Wim Hof Method:Find out more about The Wim Hof Method.Wim's book The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Potential, Transcend Your Limits. The scientific research behind The Wim Hof Method. The breathing exercise I mention and use frequently Guided Wim Hof Breathing. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter |Hey!
