Ep 232Vanessa Van Edwards | How to NOT be socially awkward.
My guest in this episode of the podcast is researcher, speaker and bestselling author Vanessa Van Edwards. Vanessa is one of the world’s leading experts in ‘people skills’ and interpersonal intelligence. She has over 2 million views on her TED talk, 600k subscribers on Youtube and her new book Cue teaches the reader how to master the secret language of charismatic communication. In the book, and throughout our conversation, Vanessa explains how to interpret, control and master these social signals to help you make an amazing impression at work and anywhere else you’d like to stand out - in the right way.I’d watched Vanessa’s TED talk and seen her in interviews and was fascinated, not only by what her research shows about how we interact with others, but how refreshing it was to hear her describe herself as a ‘recovering awkward person’. Being around other people can be challenging, especially if you don’t feel confident and, as Vanessa describes, you can create a cycle in which you feel awkward, misinterpret the situation, feel more awkward, misinterpret the situation further and so on…If any of that sounds like you, then this episode is a must-listen because Vanessa breaks down how we can become a super cue-reading machine, how to recognise the different cues - non-verbal, vocal, verbal and imagery - and how to interpret them to not only make ourselves feel comfortable but to make the people around us feel comfortable too.She also explains how our own cues can tell the world how to treat us and how empowering learning that skill can be as well as why we should all ask ourselves, before any social interaction, ‘what is my social goal?’ plus she gives some hints about ones to think about if you’re not entirely sure.We also discuss narcissists, how to spot them and how to navigate away from them, toxic personalities, why you may be one of the many people who isn’t an extrovert or an introvert but is actually an ambivert and why being vulnerable isn’t a weaknessVanessa's book Cues is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Sign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ep 230Ruby Wax | And Now for the Good News
My guest on this episode of the podcast is Ruby Wax. She is a writer, comedian, mental health campaigner and author and someone whose interviews over the years inspired me so it’s quite something to be interviewing her for this podcast…Ruby joins me in this episode to talk about her latest book And Now For The Good News - the much-needed tonic for our frazzled world. If you feel utterly distraught at the constant negative news cycle - the climate crisis, increasing costs of living, injustice, Covid and, as this episode goes live, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, then you may have stopped searching for the light of hope on the horizon. You may just assume that there’s only bad news out there in the world to be shared. Here’s the thing, if all we ever expect is bad news. If we assume that there is only bad news that chain reaction can make us feel hopeless, helpless and fall into that space where we wake up in the morning and think ‘what’s the point?’ As someone whose particular shape and shade of depression took this form, a chronic apathy that eventually suffocated everything, I see this bad news cycle as something that can trigger the same feelings - even in the most hopeful of souls.Perhaps Ruby thought this too, which is why she went on a global search to find the good search. If you don’t know the light is there, you won’t know to see it. And so Ruby compiled all her findings into the book so we can all see there is hope and to equip us with a positive approach for a brighter world and, most importantly, for a better collective mental wellbeing.Ruby has been open about her own mental health issues over the years, something that was a source of great comfort to me at a time when I needed it, so during our conversation, I also quizzed her about how she emerged from her own struggles, the coping mechanisms she put in place and what she learned from a masters degree in cognitive-based therapy from Oxford University.I came away from the conversation feeling so inspired, not least because speaking to Ruby it was a reminder to always be curious about the world around you rather than scared of it, how vulnerability can immediately neutralise tension and how, though it might feel hard sometimes, it’s important to look for and follow the light, because it is there. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Ep 228Tom Chapman | How to Open up about your Mental Health
Trigger warning: this episode contains references to suicide. My guest in this episode of the podcast is Tom Chapman. Tom the founder of The Lions Barber Collective, is an award-winning barber, author, public speaker, global barber director, and international educator. I saw Tom give a talk back in October 2021 and knew immediately I wanted to chat to him on the show as I thought his insights would be something that you, my most-excellent listeners, would find interesting and potentially helpful.Tom started The Lions Barber Collective after losing a friend to suicide and their mission is to reduce male suicide rates by encouraging men to talk while getting a trim - an appointment that might seem superficial but which involves close contact and trust. The Lions Barber Collective’s work has had a meaningful impact, Tom revealed in one interview: ‘This can be life-saving. Well I know it's life-saving - we've saved lives and I hope we continue to save others’.Tom’s work highlights something that I think perhaps gets overlooked in the beauty industry and that’s the value and intimacy of the relationship we have with our beauty professionals. They provide a safe space where people can often feel at ease and comfortable to open up about how they are really feeling.I was blown away by his insights and how obvious it is that spotting red flags, knowing how to speak to people who may be struggling is something that anyone working in beauty, who has close physical contact with their customers, clients and/or patients (depending on what field you work in) should be an essential part of training - in the same way Health and Safety is. It is health and safety after all.I invited him to the show to share his insights and to spread the word. You may not think a hair appointment, an eyelash tint or a leg wax has the potential to save a life, but when you hear Tom’s experiences, you may change your mind…During this conversation we discuss:Creating a safe space for people to talk, especially men for whom opening up about mental health can be more of a challenge. How to ask helpful questions and validate someone’s feelings.Signs to watch out for to spot if someone may be struggling with their mental health. Why you won’t ‘give someone ideas’ if you broach the conversation with them. Why we need to offer support to people who work in beauty and grooming to offload after a day of constant interaction and much more.Tom's books can be found here: Tom Chapman on Amazon. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey!
