Beauty Special | Natters that Matter with Rosie Green

This episode is brought to you in collaboration with Philips. I started trying all the ways that someone can remove their hair from a very early age and, trust me when you’ve got over 30 years of hair removal under your belt you realise how so many of them are messy, uncomfortable, ineffective and inconvenient - it’s a veritable comedy of hair removal errors! This is why I’ve asked author and columnist - and my mate - Rosie Green to join me in a no-holds-barred chat about the embarrassing stories we both have from our hair removal attempts. We also opened the floor to you, my most excellent listeners, and we share some of the mishaps you’ve had in pursuit of hair-free body parts. Spoiler alert - we were nearly in tears laughing over some of them.To find out more about the Philips Lumea visit: Philips Lumea IPL 9000 Series. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Ep 206Gemma Styles | Good Influence

E

Trigger warning: this episode contains references to suicide.Gemma Styles is a podcaster and writer Gemma Styles who joins me to talk about the topics she feels we can shed more light on. In particular, we discuss mental health and why it's so important to talk about it a little bit deeper and a little further to break the taboo.Gemma has the ability to make difficult, uncomfortable topics accessible and that's exactly what we do in this episode of the show. You may have heard me say on this podcast before that I don’t mind looking silly and asking a dumb question but as Gemma says, ‘there’s no such thing as a stupid question’ and how on earth are you supposed to know something if you haven’t learned it.In this episode, we discuss the subjects she’s felt compelled to discuss on her podcast and we also discuss our own experiences with anxiety and depression. And, listeners, we do not hold back. This is one of the rawest and exposing conversations I’ve had on this podcast and I really appreciate that Gemma was willing to ‘go there’ with me. Also, if you’re someone who doesn’t struggle with your mental health, I encourage you to listen anyway as it may help you gain a better understanding of those around you who may need support. Or it may just give you a better sense of what they may be feeling.During our discussion, Gemma and I talk about being diagnosed and what that really feels like. What it’s like to be terrified by your own thoughts. How paying attention to how you’re feeling and noting when things might be going in the wrong direction is a skill worth learning. The benefits of having an SOS system in place with your friends, even if it’s an emoji so they know when you might need them. If you enjoyed this conversation with Gemma, you can hear me chat to her on Good Influence here - Good Influence feat Emma Guns. The helpline Gemma mentioned in the show is SHOUT To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! E

Lisa Bilyeu is the co-founder and president of Impact Theory, a digital media production company focused on empowering content. And that, listeners, is how I first came to learn about Lisa. I watched the video of an interview she had done with my friend, the makeup artist and entrepreneur, Mally Roncal and really liked the tone of her content, which is design to wake up, confront, empower and motivate those who watch it.In this conversation, @lisabilyeu and I discuss:Why it’s so easy to find yourself in the purgatory of the mundane. Why it’s her mission to push people to know what their dreams are and be confident to pursue them. Her message of radical confidence. Why, if you have a goal, you have to have the energy and mindset as if it’s Day One every single day. How, in her youth, she had wanted to fit in so badly that she ended up minimising herself and how she came to be able to shift into her gear when she was unapologetically herself. Why taking ownership of your mistakes and committing to learning from them is so important. Why the ego is only ever trying to protect you but sometimes doesn’t help you at all.How we can fall into the trap of rejecting ourselves and so much more…For more information about Lisa and to be first to hear about her book, out 2022, go to https://www.lisabilyeu.comWatch WOMEN OF IMPACT now.Watch Lisa's TED Talk From Housewife to the Co-Founder of a Billion-Dollar CompanyTo join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! From being a hands-on therapist to the face of beauty on shopping TV and brands' secret weapon when developing products, there's not much she doesn't know.In this conversation, Ali and I discuss:Why the customer always comes first. Why people in the public eye who have cosmetic tweakments and don’t declare it set an unrealistic expectation for what beauty products can doWhy she hasn’t had any cosmetic procedures because she doesn’t want anything to skew the effects and therefore how good a product actually isHow a shift in how we spoke about beauty a few years ago has allowed much more ‘good’ information to get out into the world but sadly has opened the doors to some ‘bad’ information. How beauty identities, ie, being someuse who uses clean beauty for example, allows you to be marketed to better but doesn’t actually mean you’re getting better skincareWhy what works for someone else won’t necessarily work for youWhy the biggest mistake a brand can make is forgetting about the customer and much much more…To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! One of the things I'm asked about most, via DM and email, is weight loss and yet I am always hesitant to talk about this publicly in case I trigger or offend. Ep 200Julia Samuel | Every Family Has a Story

E

Julia Samuel psychotherapist and author who returns to the podcast to talk about how we can learn to love ourselves. The topic of this podcast was sparked by a conversation Julia (@juliasamuelmbe) and I had at the end of 2020 when we discussed how liking yourself, or loving yourself, is the foundation for the relationships you are subsequently able to form with others. It made me wonder if your relationships are always challenging, cause your stress and/or pain or leave you heartbroken, is it wise to take a step back and examine how you feel about yourself before you make connections with others. In this episode, we discuss attachment theory, why loving and being loved is such a vital component of our identity, the risk in loving others and why we need to pay more attention to our feelings, rather than override them because of what others think because they are actually trying to steer us towards the things we need.We also, very unscripted I hasten to add, did a little exercise - The Felt Sense by Eugene Gendlin - which was a first for me on this podcast. Speaking of that exercise, it’s slightly hypnotic and could be distracting so please be aware of this and don’t follow along if you’re driving, operating heavy machinery or if your attention is required elsewhere. Before I sat down for this call with Julia, I was telling some friends that I was speaking to her again and as Julia has a huge amount of expertise in grief counselling and living losses, someone suggested I ask her about the end of friendships, female friendships in this instance, and how devastating they can be.I think the end of friendships can be trivialised in a way we wouldn’t do with a romantic relationship and so in this episode, we discuss why it’s legitimate to feel the same, or similar, kind of heartbreak after a friendship ends as it is when a relationship does.Julia's book This Too Shall Pass is available now.Julia's podcast A Living Loss is available on all good podcast platforms. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey!
