Bullet Points | Book Club

It’s time for another #bookclub episode of the podcast, not least because you’ve been sharing with me, via DM and email, the books you’ve been enjoying lately. I’ve also had my nose, and ears, in some great reads and I’m sharing my five favourites with you.I selected books I’ve found informative, inspiring, entertaining and downright eye-opening and I’d love to hear your thoughts. In today’s #bookclub episode:Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss (@thefbinegotiator) and Tahl Raz. Keep hitting the same dead-ends in your lines of communication? This book could help and Chris’ insights in his time as a hostage negotiator are incredibly helpful.TMI: My Life in Scandal by Perez Hilton (@theperezhilton). Perez came on the podcast at the end of last year and it was in preparing for that conversation that I read this book. It’s a fascinating insight into what was going on as Perez, and his hugely popular website, charted a unique period in celebrity history. Open Book: A Memoir by Jessica Simpson (@jessicasimpson). I used to love a TV show on MTV called Diary. The tagline was ‘you think you know, but you have no idea’. This is my way of saying that I thought I had the measure of Jessica Simpson, but it turns out I didn’t have a clue. I listened to this on @audible and it’s a triumph, not least because of the way in which Jessica tells her story.Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living by Glennon Doyle (@glennondoyle) Yep, @adele influenced me into buying this. One social media post and within seconds it’s on my @amazonkindle. Adele said ‘this books will shake your  brain and make your soul scream’, but what do you think? How to Heal a Broken Heart by Rosie Green (@lifesrosie). Rosie charts her journey through heartbreak and the disintegration of everything she thought was certain and it’s raw, honest and not at all sugar-coated. In this book Rosie re-enters that pain in order to offer anyone else experiencing it a path out of it. Her honesty, candour and resilience shine through and it’s a must-read guide for anyone struggling with heartache, loss or rejection. To find the full, unedited conversation simply click the link in my bio or type ‘The Emma Guns Show’ into your preferred podcast platform. As ever, I’d love to know what you think whether that’s in the comments below, on DM or via email. Ep 185Hayley Quinn | Top tips for Dating in a Digital Age.

Hayley Quinn is a dating and confidence coach who joins me on the podcast to share her expertise on dating, making connections and knowing what you want from and in a relationship.Hayley is one of the UK’s leading dating coaches and her story of how she came to be one of the leading, and most trusted, authorities on dating, for both men and women, has a slightly unusual beginning. But it was this perspective, the origins of which she shares during our conversation, that allowed her to create her own unique insights, courses and workshops that have helped people in how they approach their own dating life.In this conversation, Hayley and I discuss:Whether there really is a ‘power play’ at work when you’re in the dating ‘game’. The rules of dating and whether they actually exist or not.How to turn text chemistry into a real connection in person (when and where lockdown restrictions allow)How to express yourself authentically. The dangers of getting hooked on the idea of someone, but why it’s such an easy trap to fall into. The value in getting to know yourself before dating. Why rejection is a vital part of dating and why it’s vital to learn how to handle it.The many and varied, and quite unhelpful, dating ‘truisms’ out there.Dating after separation, divorce or after the breakdown of a long-term relationship. How to communicate what your needs are, and so much more…Hayley's TED Talk Searching for Love to Escape Ourselves. To sign up for one of Hayley's courses or for one-to-one coaching visit -- www.hayleyquinn.comTo join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Beauty as Self-Care?

Is your beauty regime a form of self-care?In this episode, I open up a conversation about something I've seen slowly happening around me in the beauty space and I'd love to hear your thoughts. It's the idea that the beauty products we buy and the way in which we use them amount to self-care.Personally, I find this to be a worrying development because self-care is a broad concept that means so much more than what I think some beauty and wellness brands are currently communicating. It comes at a time when the conversation about mental health has never been more open and somewhere along the way this idea of self-care has managed to establish itself as the 'soft' treatment option for minor mental health issues. Feeling a bit anxious? Light a candle and use your best bath oils. Eleven months of lockdown getting you down? Exfoliate, apply some fake tan and wake up fabulous. Struggling to feel motivated? Put on some red lipstick. These are all lovely things to do, and there's no doubt about it, there is a very real 'high' from an indulgent bath, a golden glow and an I-mean-business red lipstick, but it's my opinion that they do not offer any meaningful long-term support to mental health and it's potentially dangerous to suggest they do.On one hand, the destigmatisation of mental health issues means that we're seeing a medicalisation of normal emotions; feeling sad is expressed as being depressed, feeling stressed is expressed as anxiety and it's quite possible that a bath, fake tan and red lipstick might make you feel better. But on the other, those people who actually have depression and/or anxiety might feel like failures if these things don't work for them or, worse still, there's a real risk that those people, the ones who need genuine help from a mental health professional or doctor aren't actually getting it.I’m so interested to hear what you think on this subject...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Ep 184Richie Bostock | The Power of Breath

Richie Bostock is breathwork coach, author and speaker who joins me on the podcast to share the life-changing benefits of breathwork he has experienced first-hand and also seen in the tens of thousands of people he has ‘breathed’. Richie’s own journey starts in corporate management and digital entrepreneurship, two very high-stress environments where exhibiting stress is a sign to the people around you that you’re taking your job seriously. But it was his father’s MS diagnosis that made Richie go on a journey of discovery to help his dad, via training with the Ice Man himself, Wim Hof, that triggered a profound change in Richie too.If you’re reading this then, well, sorry to state the obvious, but you’re breathing, but what more science and research shows us is that we may not be breathing correctly. Meaning, our breathing might actually be working against our physical, mental and emotional health. Richie discovered how to breathe for maximum benefit in all these areas, which is why he is so committed to sharing his message as far and as wide as possible. In this conversation, @thebreathguy and I discuss:How breath is free medicine; it’s just a case of knowing how to use it.How the benefits of breath have been known for centuries but modern science is proven, unequivocally, the real impact it can have. What he learned from the Ice Man himself @iceman_hofHow he ‘ripped the band-aid off’ his own life and made huge changes. How breathing affected his own tendency towards OCD.Why we should ‘hold all perspectives lightly’.Why modern living seems to be forcing us to choose between ‘certain unhappiness’ and ‘uncertain happiness’.How trying to be someone you aren’t can lead to disconnection and depression. Why breath is the Swiss Army knife of the body. How finding your breath and creating a space to be still can be where you tap into your intuition, and so much more…Download Richie's app Flourish.Richie's book Exhale is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Need a good night's sleep?

Bullet Points • Need a good night’s sleep? In this mid-week episode I share some tips for helping you get a better night’s sleep since it’s something, based on the DMs, messages and emails I’ve been receiving, that seems to be bothering a lot of people right now.I can relate, I’ve suffered with insomnia in the past and stress is often the thing that causes the most disruption to my ability to fall asleep, stay sleeping and sleep well.As we’re all under added stress right now it’s no surprise that for a lot of people sleep is becoming harder and harder. In the episode, I share the five strategies that have worked for me and that I recommend to try to get sleep back on track, even with the added stresses and strains:- Make a list of everything that’s on your mind before your head hits the pillow. The act of writing out any worries can compartmentalise them and minimise the stress attached to them.- If you’re working from home and are tempted to have a quick nap when you’d normally run out for your afternoon coffee then, well, don’t.- Create the perfect environment for sleep; a comfortable bed, the right kind of lighting, the right temperature - it all helps.- Create a sleep schedule - and stick to it.- Take a look and what you’re eating and when you’re eating it. A small tweak such as eating dinner an hour earlier could make all the difference when it comes to sleep quality. To find the full, unedited episode simply click the link in my bio or type ‘The Emma Guns Show’ into your preferred podcast platform. As ever, I’d love to know what you think whether that’s in the comments below, on DM or via email. Feel-Good Habits | Year in ReviewAs we begin 2021 I thought it might be helpful to take a look back at the habits my wonderful guests have shared in the #feelgoodhabits show and the ones that have come up time and again. Clearly, these are the habits that, anecdotally, deliver that feel-good feeling, so in this episode, I share some data and research that explains why.The most common #feelgoodhabits of 2020 include:Whether you want to call it exercise, fitness, working out or movement, there’s no denying how often guests cited getting the heart rate up every day. Daily movement is proven to, among other things, improve self-esteem, self-confidence, improve sleep quality and lower stress levels.Let’s call this one ‘connection’ - these are those bonds with friends and family. In addition to making up feel-good, these bonds are proven to promote better mental and physical wellbeing. The benefits of pausing and being grateful. Showing gratitude allows us to feel and enjoy positive emotions and relish the good things when they happen rather than letting preoccupation with stressors allow them to pass you by.Therapy and mindfulness. I’ve grouped these together even though they are quite different, but have been proven to bring about change at brain level for long-term mental health benefits.Having a laugh, in whatever form that may take for you. You can spontaneously laugh for a minute and feel how it affects you physically (try it, it’s bonkers, but it’s wonderful), dance like a loon to your favourite feel-good song or find a blooper reel on YouTube. Laughter has been shown to boost immune function, decrease stress-related hormones and increase our good cholesterol. Ep 179Dr Rangan Chatterjee | Top tips for losing weight.

Dr Rangan Chatterjee makes a welcome return to the podcast for a conversation about weight loss. While it’s that time of year when we’re bombarded with messaging about ‘new year, new you’ and so many prompts about going on a diet and starting a new fitness regime this episode definitely isn’t that.@drchatterjee shares his insights from nearly 20 years in GP practice and those appointments where his patients have said, ‘I just can’t seem to lose weight’. What Rangan observed is that so many people were only looking at diet and exercise when, in actual fact, there are more factors at play.Rangan supports his expertise from years in practice and scientific research with his signature approach, which is one of compassion. It’s this approach that has helped him guide patients towards their goals and now readers of his new book Feel Great, Lose Weight. In our conversation @drchatterjee and I discuss:The emotional relationship we have with our bodies, food and fitness. The controversial topic of ‘food addiction’.Why you can be trying your very best to be healthy and fall short for reasons that aren’t your fault. How to break down your health goals so they become enjoyable pursuits not another stick to beat yourself with. How to have a healthy relationship with your bathroom scales. Why how we talk to ourselves is a crucial part of our progress. How our emotional baggage and childhood experiences can influence our weight; and so much more....I am acutely aware that the subjects of weight and weight loss can be difficult ones to approach because the relationship we have with these issues tends to be an emotional one. For that reason, we are inclined to see, hear and react to discussion of these issues through that personal emotional filter. I don’t want to apologise for my content but I do want to explain; I hope it’s evident I have no intention, when creating any episode of the podcast, to upset, alienate, offend or shame. As much as I’m mindful of this and have wrestled with whether it’s appropriate to create content on weight loss or not, I’ve decided it’s important to have this conversation for the benefit of the person it may help rather than not create it for the person it may potentially offend. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | The secrets to getting motivated

In this episode, I answer a question I’ve been receiving a lot over the last few weeks and that’s how to tap in your motivation. How to get ‘in the zone’ when it comes to reaching goals. This question is mostly about fitness, and usually in response to my morning IG stories where I chat to you pre- and post-workout, so that’s what I focus on in this episode but the tips for setting goals, aims and objectives and not losing momentum are, I think, universal. At this time of year we are bombarded with messages about ‘new year, new you’ and, as I explain in the episode, I loathe that messaging. It’s lazy and unhelpful and this idea that you need to get ‘back on track’ or atone for your festive excesses with a new fitness regime or diet is shaming. I don’t intend to contribute to that narrative with this episode, but as so many people have asked the same question I did want to answer in a way that, I hope, is responsible and helpful. In the episode, I share the five strategies that work for me:Take a step back from your goal and look at all the things that may influence the success of your efforts. Surrounding yourself with the right kind of inspiration, even if it’s just virtually.Avoid the ‘all the gear, no idea’ approach to achieving your goal.Set yourself up for success by plotting a path to your goal with achievable ‘wins’ along the way. Stick with it: it may sound boring but consistency is arguably the most important component when trying to achieve any goal.As ever, I’d love to know what you think whether that’s in the comments below, on DM or via email. I make this podcast for YOU and if there’s anything you’d like to hear on this subject, or any other, please feel free to let me know.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.#podcast #selfhelp #loneliness #lonely #health #mentalhealth #wellnessHey! Andy Puddicombe is the co-founder and voice of the @headspace app and he came on the show in March 2019 to share his wisdom on meditation and mindfulness. It’s estimated 1 in 6 people are currently struggling with their mental health so it seemed timely to re-share my conversation with Andy. As we conclude 2020 and reflect on what has been a challenging 12 months, the overload may be triggering, upsetting and unsettling for many of us, so it seemed like the perfect time to share Andy's insights and wisdom.Andy began meditating aged 10, spent 10 years as a Buddhist monk and, I can tell you from having spent time with him, he exudes stillness and calm in a way that I’ve never seen on experienced before. If you’re currently feeling anxious you may find Andy’s insights helpful. During our unedited conversation, @andypuddicombe explains:- How to approach meditation if it’s new to you.- The symmetry between nutrition and meditation in how we look after ourselves and our health.- How meditation can ease feelings of anxiety.- Why meditation doesn’t mean that you have to empty your mind.- The role of breathing in meditation.- The difference between meditation and mindfulness.- The difference between our thoughts and intuition.- How to learn not to believe everything you think, and much more…To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Caroline Hirons, Trinny Woodall and Nadine Baggott joined me on the podcast for what ended up being one of the most unstructured conversations I've ever committed to audio for this podcast.I'm revisiting it this Christmas as so many listeners have shared that they have found such wisdom and insight in this episode and that it has kept them company and made them feel connected. Given the circumstances of Christmas 2020 offering connection seems like the least I can do so I'm bringing it out of the vault for your enjoyment - whether it keeps you company while you prepare Christmas lunch or take a few minutes for yourself away from everyone. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Sam Chapman | From the Vault

E

Sam Chapman is a makeup artist, content creator and businesswoman who joined me on the podcast to have a frank and open discussion about mental health. At the time of recording, back in the summer of 2018, both Sam and I had made strides with our own mental health and having this conversation was with the aim of creating a safe resource for anyone listening who may be going through something similar. Sometimes, when you’re struggling, it can feel very lonely and both Sam and I were keen to have a conversation that would make anyone feeling isolated, alone and helpless feel comforted that they weren’t alone and that there were options and ways to move forward positively. In the two and half years since this episode was published I’ve had numerous messages from you, my most-excellent listeners, saying how useful this episode was, how much you appreciated Sam’s honesty and how it helped you understand your own mental health and have empathy for other people experiencing something similar too. This is a conversation I think back to time and time again, and given the year we’ve had and how 2020 has plunged people deeper into mental and emotional distress, or caused people to experience these things for the first time, I thought revisiting this chat may be helpful. In this conversation, @samchapman and I discuss:What it’s like to feel depressed and why no two depressions look the same. Why sometimes it’s the people around you who’ll sense your struggle before you do - and why that’s ok.The building blocks of recovery and how little things can have a huge impact. How not all relationships survive your recovery and how to make peace with that. How depression can sometimes feel like a slow disconnection from yourself and how to reconnect - and much more.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey! Bullet Points | Managing Loneliness.

In this episode, I talk through some tactics that may help, in the short term, if you're feeling lonely. Whether it's because of the lockdown restrictions, the new 'normal' of working from home or because you've just found yourself in a situation where you're alone a lot, and that's uncomfortable or not preferable to you, then these strategies may be helpful.Avoid falling into the comparison trap. In other words, don't measure the value of your life and experience against others, especially if the medium via which you are comparing is a social media platform.Use your social media profiles for good and if that means muting a few people then so be it.Lean into boredom. And I mean really lean into it.Be physical and use exercise as a way of breaking up the day.Get outside and really appreciate the sights, sounds and how it feels to be out in the fresh air. It's proven to reduce blood pressure and help with feelings of depression.Rather than focusing on all the things being alone aren't allowing you do, focus on what being alone does allow you to do. Bullet Points | How to Make a Habit

There has been a lot of chat in DMs and on email about habits in the last few weeks, so I thought it’d be a good idea to take a look at the ways in which you can feel out whether a habit is right for you. We’ve all had to adjust this year, with varying degrees of restrictions and lockdowns but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to weave new and helpful habits into our new normal. In this episode I share the six strategies that I think can help you make a habit stick or, perhaps more crucially, how to tell if it’s just not for you, including:Starting small and easing your way into whatever it is you’re trying.Giving yourself a timeframe.Attaching your new habit to something you already do and enjoy doing.Keeping a visual log of your habit as you do them. How a little accountability can help make a habit take root and give you a sense of satisfaction from day one.Figuring out what might get in your way before you begin so you can plot a course around, or through, it.As ever, I’d love to know what you think whether that’s in the comments below, on DM or via email. I make this podcast for YOU and if there’s anything you’d like to hear on this subject, or any other, please feel free to let me know.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Hey!
