Taylor James | The Power of saying 'No' and the life-changing benefits of self belief.
Taylor James is the host of award-winning podcast Waffle Shop and in this conversation we get extremely deep. What we both have in common is an inability to hold back when it comes to discussing our own mental health so buckle up as we navigate the depths of depression, clawing your way back to becoming a person you like, trying to not be such a sensitive soul and much more.Taylor also opens up about his sexuality and the things in life that have held him back, even if they only existed in his own head. He also shares how life changed in an instant when a routine operation changed his mother's life forever meaning that he had to make life or death decisions. It's deep, it's emotional and we hope it's helpful. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | An Invitation from Kim Kardashian
This week's behind-the-scenes involves an exclusive event from Skims Swim, which I would never have been able to say 'yes' to if I hadn't challenged the way I have always done things. Davinia Taylor | Hormone hacking, getting out of your own way and putting yourself first.
If you Google 'Davinia Taylor' you'll likely find one of two things at the top of your search results: images from the early Noughties of Davinia swigging out of a bottle of Dom Perignon or a more recent one of her looking overweight, swollen and uncomfortable. She was the ultimate IT girl but years of excess had left her feeling terrible. Determined not to feel sluggish, foggy and slow one single day more, Davinia committed to turning her life around one tiny change at a time. What started with a cold shower to boost her dopamine levels started a deep-dive investigation into the other free hacks she could use to shake off a feeling she hated and instead feel energise, vital and motivated. It's been a journey and it's one she shares here. What's worked for Davinia might not work for you but what is absolutely undeniable is how committing to making positive changes, one at time, might be boring and the opposite of a 'quick fix' but boy, does it work!I'm thrilled to have Davinia back on the show because her unrelenting energy and enthusiasm to be better and feel better is infectious.Davinia's books are available here and her supplements are available here.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Alex Light | Reinventing herself, navigating the world as a sensitive soul and unlearning toxic diet culture.
She's back! Alex Light returns to the podcast and she is, as it to be expected, an absolute joy to talk to and a very special guest indeed. Now, full disclosure, Alex and I are friends and we are similar in a lot of ways, not least the fact that we can get pretty deep, pretty quickly once we start chatting and that's what happened in this episode. We talk about Alex's biggest risk, of course, which was to pivot from a content creator who focussed on fashion and beauty into someone who spoke openly about her own experience with an eating disorder and body image issues to now being one of social media's most-followed accounts for sensible non-toxic messaging around food and our bodies. We spend a lot of time pondering whether it's any coincidence that two people who are both sensitive souls have had trouble with their sense of identity that has spilled over into how they feel about how they look and how they care for themselves.I loved this conversation with Alex because I truly feel we would have had exactly the same conversation over lunch. It's real, it's raw and it's honest.I hope you enjoy this episode. And if you do, please do give The Emma Guns Show a sweet little five-star rating where it is you get your podcasts.Hey! Bullet Points | I am not taking Ozempic.
It's time for a little review and a look back at the changes we've made on the podcast this year as well as what YOU'D like to see in the future. Plus, based on one listener's email, I ask whether you want more habits and/or lifestyle content from me. Scott Walker | A hostage negotiator on staying calm in a crisis and the many ways you can look at risk.
If you’re a long-time listener then you’ll know I love tapping into other people’s expertise, especially when it’s sp specific yet somehow incredibly applicable to everyday life. Case-in-point: hostage negotiator Scott Walker. We obviously enter this conversation via Scott’s insights on risk, which when you consider what he does for a living, is truly fascinating. I can’t even imagine what risks one has to consider when bartering with kidnappers but Scott actually thinks there’s more than one way to look at risk, which is a perspective I really appreciated.Scott’s book Order Out of Chaos is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | Do you want a quick fix?
Perhaps social media is to blame but it's never been easier to find people who say they can help you with everything from body image issues, business woes, mental health and more. But I have to wonder how much help there really is behind shareable memes and pretty Instagram feeds - and I'd like to know what you think...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Carrie & David Grant | Raising neurodivergent and non-binary children.
Well, what a lovely reunion this was. 18 years after I first interviewed Carrie and David Grant when they were on Fame Academy we meet again. And what a conversation! Not only do they guide me through the most significant risks they’ve navigated, including whether or not to have children when they were so happy just the two of them, but they also describe what it’s been like navigating parenting four neurodivergent children, three who identify as non-binary or trans and who have struggled with their mental health. They were when I met them nearly two decades ago, warm, compassionate and generous and they are precisely the same all these later and want nothing more than to share what they’ve learned with others.Carrie & David’s book A Very Modern Family is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | Is it ok to stop being polite?
I was made absolutely furious by a situation this week. Actually, it's more accurate to say I became furious at myself this week because I was too polite in a situation where I should have been assertive. It begs the question, when is it ok to stop being polite? To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Shaa Wasmund | Why having a tough start in life doesn't mean you won't make it.
Shaa Wasmund is an entrepreneur, coach and author whose hugely successful career has been forged from a catalogue of risks, chances and gambles. It’s made all the more impressive by her start in life; a tumultuous home life, moving countries and living in hostels… It’s why she’s committed, despite her success, always to be available to offer help, insights and support to those who need it.Our conversation is raw, honest and inspiring, not least because Shaa makes very little room for excuses or navel-gazing. I’m confident this episode is one you’ll listen to once and then plug back into when you need a bolt of inspiration.Shaa’s book Stop Talking, Start Doing is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | Is Ted Lasso the greatest TV show of all time?
When I love a TV show, I really love a TV show and right now it's all about Ted Lasso. Finding a 'comfort watch' isn't just about finding something you enjoy, it's well known in psychology to make a person feel safe and secure to not only watch something 'light' but also rewatch ad nauseam. Not that anyone asked, but I also share the three TV shows I rewatch once a year because they are just so damn good. Caroline Goyder | The career-ending risk that paid off.
It’s always a pleasure to welcome guests back onto the podcast and Caroline Goyder is no exception. She first appeared on the show in 2019 to share her expertise on how to speak with confidence in public but she shared so much more.I was surprised to learn her biggest risk was giving a TEDx Talk on speaking confidently, given that was how I had discovered her. But, as she explains, it was a huge risk because if it didn’t go well, it could be a career-ending move.Caroline’s books are available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> NewsletterHey! Emma Hoareau | The Fakeness of Instagram and Finding Body Confidence
Emma Hoareau is a self-confessed skincare obsessive and a social media influencer with a huge following across Instagram and Youtube. From her curated feed you could think her life is perfect and nothing bothers her but, as she explains during our conversation, she’s faced crises of confidence over her creative ability, taken time to feel positive and at peace in her own skin and, as a result of so much change in her childhood, has an almost cavalier approach to change.Emma’s creative mentorship and collection How To By Emma is open to mentees now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Michael Maisey | How facing death made one man embrace life.
Trigger warning: this episode contains references to suicide.I’ve said it before and it’s highly likely I’ll say it again… One of the best things about creating this podcast is getting to have conversations with and see the world through someone else’s eyes. Seeing it through Michael Maisey’s lens, as someone who spent the majority of his teens in the prison system, overcame heroin addiction and survived a suicide attempt, who is now a successful businessman and motivational speaker is a real privilege.I ask all my guests what their relationship is like with risk and, as you can imagine, Michael’s answer is completely unique. His life experiences have given him an incredible perspective and his struggles have motivated him to be the helping hand someone else, who finds themselves at the thin end of opportunity and privilege, needs.I’m not going to lie, this conversation is INTENSE and deeply thought-provoking. Chloe Madeley | Shunning media spotlight, banning comments section and the life-changing benefits of weight training.
It would be wildly inappropriate for me to have favourites when it comes to my podcast guests - I love them all! - but Chloe Madeley is what dream podcast guests are made of: self-aware, articulate and ready to tell their story. As ever, we start with risk, and how Chloe made the choice to step back from the world of media to pursue personal training after one weightlifting session, quite literally, changed her life, her mental and physical health. We discuss so much more from self-worth, being the target of the media glare, growing up with famous parents and why she believes so passionately that comments sections should be banned.Chloe’s books are available now and The EC Method is currently open for enrollment. Bullet Points | A cure for Jet Lag and why it's time to get outside...
I can't lie to you, the jet lag coming back from LA this time was truly brutal but it did allow me to watch The Night Agent on Netflix in one sitting...Being awake when I wanted to be asleep reminded me of the shows previously where we've discussed the benefits of getting up at the same time every day, getting outside and in sunlight and more, so I'm revisiting it in this episode. Priya Joi | Surviving being 'othered' and why nothing should scare you.
How is your relationship to risk impacted by being a science journalist who is at the frontline of breaking stories like Ebola, HIV and, of course, Covid-19? That’s something I wanted to unpick with Priya Joi, who writes for New Scientist and the World Health Organisation, during our conversation.Priya’s life lessons are informed by a period of chronic fatigue in her 20s that left her housebound and wondering if she’d ever be able to travel or live the life she loved, again.Priya’s rational and compassionate view of life and what it throws at you is a real pleasure to listen to.Priya’s book Motherland is available now. Dr Sam Bunting | The Power of Beauty and Mental Health
Dr Sam Bunting has been a familiar face on the beauty scene for some time. A cosmetic dermatologist who now has her own skincare line Dr Sam’s, Sam wanted to bridge the gap between medical dermatology and beauty. But as one of my go-to skincare experts, in my role as a beauty journalist, I’ve also learned that Sam understands the emotional stress of ‘bad skin’. We both suffered terribly from teenage acne and know all too well how much it can impact confidence and one’s sense of self. It’s these conversations I’ve had with Sam over the years that have led to broader, more deep and meaningful conversations about life, love and much more, which is why I was curious to hear the life lessons she’s learned, the challenges she’s had to overcome and how, as someone who can feel as though the world gets a little too much at times, she copes with the lows as well as the highs.Dr Sam’s is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | The Power of Decluttering
Is a good clear-out good for your mental health? And, if so, where do you even begin? This is something I ponder in this episode and it takes us all the way back to 2018 when I did a massive wardrobe edit as part of the #26Habits series. It wasn't just about a leaner wardrobe, it also revealed some other completely unexpected benefits that have stayed with me nearly five years later. I'm in a Toxic Relationship with Food | The Shame of Living with an Eating Disorder.
Following my post on social media about being in recovery for an eating disorder I wanted to try to answer some questions that have come in from you, my most-excellent listeners, in the hope it’s helpful for those struggling with something similar. If you struggle with food, body image or other topics covered in this episode, here is a list of resources:https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/https://seed.charity/https://www.nightingalehospital.co.uk/https://www.orri-uk.com/To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | Gwyneth's Diet backlash, inequality in the workplace and being honest about binge eating.
Why are we so judgemental about what and how other people eat? I mention it in this episode of Bullet Points after the backlash Gwyneth Paltrow received recently for talking through her daily diet. Now, whether her diet is nutritionally sound or not isn't really the point, it's the reaction to it that's piqued my interest and I'd love to know what you think...Also in this episode, your feedback on my conversation with Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton and a look ahead to a deeply personal episode I recorded with no guest, just you and me.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton | Breaking the glass ceiling, getting off the streets and redefining what it means to be a woman in power.
One of the great privileges of creating this podcast is getting to see the world through the lens of other people’s experiences. Seeing the world through Sabrina’s eyes was utterly enthralling. She experienced homelessness in her teens, now holds one of the most senior positions in the Fire Brigade and has multiple qualifications making her an expert leading international expert on risk-critical decision-making in crises.I ask all my guests, ‘What’s your relationship like with risk?’ and as someone whose day job involves dealing with something as unpredictable as fire, Sabrina’s answers are a perspective I hadn’t heard before. What an incredible guest, and now friend, whose primary mission in life is to pay it forward.Sabrina’s book The Gender Bias is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | The Disease to Please, Caroline Hirons newness and deconstructing gender bias.
Well, it seems like a lot of us are people-pleasers and I'm so glad my conversation with Anna Mathur was a balm for those of you who have felt exhausted and depleted by always doing for others. If this conversation was helpful you may also enjoy my chat with narcissism expert Dr Ramani Durvasula. This week I'm sharing some of the best beauty products to have come across my desk recently, plus I share a teaser from my conversation with Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton who holds one of the most senior positions in the UK fire service and has written about gender bias in her latest book.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Anna Mathur | Overcoming people-pleasing, finding yourself and how to ask for help.
One thing about interviewing psychotherapists is how tempting it can be to open up about the things that I am personally struggling with, or have struggled with. It’s not something I intended to do but in navigating Anna Mathur’s life lessons we stumbled upon the territory of people pleasing and, well, that was it.Both of us have found ourselves crippled by the effects of people pleasing and these have shown up in Anna’s life in ways that have had a huge impact. I always open the show by asking my guests what their relationship with risk is like and it’s interesting that a big risk for Anna, and me, was to put ourselves first. If you’re afflicted with the disease to please then this episode is definitely for you.Anna’s books are available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Bullet Points | Pedro Pascal, being open-minded and the pain of people-pleasing.
Goodness me! Mention Pedro Pascal on Instagram once and your DMs go wild. That was my experience after mentioning him in a post at the weekend so let's lean into why we love him.I also share your feedback on my conversation with Tapping Queen Poppy Delbridge and give you a sneak peek at what's coming next when I sit down with psychotherapist Anna Mathur. Poppy Delbridge | Taking risks, the nonsense of manifesting and a sprinkling of quantum physics.
When it comes to alternative therapy I am, by nature and also from years of working as a journalist in the health, beauty and wellness space, a cynic. For years, I’d get drawn into to fads and trends by their razzle-dazzle and now, to avoid this, I like to see proof in the shape of data, clinical trials and evidence. So you may be surprised to see Poppy Delbridge, aka The Tapping Queen, as a guest on the show. Tapping is a form of therapy that involves tapping your face and upper body to release stress, minimise trauma and ‘raise your emotional baseline’. But, despite sounding ‘woo woo’ has a raft of evidence from neuroscience, and psychology that proves the claims around its benefits. This podcast is about learning from my guests' life lessons and given how integral tapping has been to Poppy, in times of trauma, change and flux, it was a fascinating insight into Poppy and how she has dealt with life’s challenges.Poppy’s book Tapping In is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! I told you that you'd be punching the air after listening to Lauren Mahon's episode and based on your feedback, it's clear you loved what she had to say, especially about how she's far less risk-averse on the other side of cancer. This week has been a busy week but I made time for lunch with my good friends Noella Gabriel and Rosie Green and my abs still genuinely hurt from laughing. If I give you one tip today it's to put lunch in the diary with someone you love. And finally, I share some other conversations I have coming up and what you can expect from the next episode with Poppy Delbridge. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ep 266Lauren Mahon | Moving on after trauma, living life to the fullest and being the Kathy Burke of cancer.
To know Lauren Mahon is to love her. It’s as simple as that. And considering everything she’s been through in the last few years, she’s also a huge inspiration.Diagnosed with breast cancer at 31, she was the host of the hugely successful podcast You, Me and the Big C with her friends Rachel Bland and Dame Deborah James who have both since died. Lauren, on the other hand, has been in remission for over five years.I didn’t want this conversation to be about two huge, defining traumas; her cancer and losing her close friends and I’m so glad because we recorded this episode at a time when Lauren has never felt more hopeful and excited about the future.Though this podcast is about my guests sharing the life lessons they’ve learned from going through the tougher stuff in life, and how they’ve come out the other side, that doesn’t mean we have to plumb the darkest depths - and as you’ll hear in this conversation, there’s a lot of light and love!I challenge you to finish this episode and not a) love Lauren but also want b) to punch the air and potentially c) feel as though you can take over the world. Bullet Points | Insights from the frontline, what makes you ugly and a moving on after trauma.
You've shared some incredible feedback on my conversation with Dr Jim Down, which I share in this episode. Thank you so much for all your messages! It's been a busy week of podcasting and I have conversations with Poppy Delbridge, Anna Mathur and Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton coming up very soon. I also attended my friend Anita's book launch this week so if you like the sound of it, grab a copy of UGLY now.Next time I'm chatting to my friend Lauren Mahon and, among other things, we discuss how to move on after trauma. Ep 265Jim Down | The Truth about Covid-19, the emotional toll of working on the frontline and how to save your mental health.
I love creating this podcast for many reasons but chief among them is the opportunity it affords me to speak to people with whom I might not necessarily cross paths in my every day. This has never been more true than with Jim Down, a consultant in critical care and anaesthesia at University College London Hospitals who was frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic, attended to former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko when he was poisoned with Polonium-210 in 2006 and was one of the first on the scene of the Hatfield train disaster. This show is about hearing how my guests have navigated the more challenging parts of life and come out the other side, and Jim’s stories and learnings are extraordinary. His openness about his own mental health and the challenges he’s had to overcome as a result of the cumulative stress of life in hospital wards, intensive care units and high-stress situations is levelling, to say the least.Jim is also extremely open, warm and thoughtful, and as you’d perhaps expect from someone who has to make life-or-death decisions, shows real compassion. Even as someone who saw the impact of the Covid-19 virus, he makes efforts to understand the people who now say it was a hoax, which feels extraordinarily magnanimous when you hear what he saw, first-hand in 2020.Life in the Balance and Life Support are available to order now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ep 264Dean Piper | The 'murky' world of celebrity journalism, moral epiphanies and lessons learned from walking away from the most glamorous job in journalism.
EDean Piper! I can't lie, I enjoyed this conversation with Dean immensely and actually found it to be an incredibly cathartic experience too. Dean and I were both 'celebrity journalists' at a time when celebrity journalism was called-in to editors via brick phones and gathered on the dancefloor at nightclubs or in the loos at award ceremonies. It was the era of celebrity weddings, showbiz couples with portmanteau nicknames and when daily sales of newspapers and magazines running showbiz gossip ran into the millions. However, while it was fun for a while, about ten years ago Dean turned his back on 'that life'. In fact, he didn't just turn on his heel, he walked out with no job to go to, no plan and no idea what the future would hold. This conversation details why Dean has never looked back, why he felt it was time to leave and how disappointed he is that in the ten years since he left, celebrity journalism has become so murky and destructive. We discuss some of his biggest regrets while working on tabloids, how he got some of his juiciest scoops back in the day and what happens, and who stops calling when you walk away from the most powerful job in showbiz. If you enjoy Dean's insights here then you'll love his Substack where he's writing a weekly column about his life in showbiz. Ep 263Estée Lalonde | Learning from her mistakes, the highs and lows of starting a business and soft-launching her relationship online.
I'm so glad to welcome Estée Lalonde back to the podcast, especially as this conversation coincides with some exciting developments in her professional and personal life. There's her body care brand Mirror Water and a new relationship...Her career is a truly incredible one: she followed her boyfriend to London, became a part of the beauty blogging community and has gone on to make her social media and Youtube a wildly successful business. She has shared her life with millions of followers and as she evolves from influencer to businesswoman, she's opening up about the highs and lows of taking huge risks, knowing what you want from life, people and relationships and why you have to advocate for yourself.I've known Estée for a few years now and I always come away from time spent with her feeling better for having seen the world through her eyes and, I'm just going to say it, I think this might be the best conversation I've had with her in the time we've known each other.Estée is always honest, real and straight-talking so hearing her share her life lessons with no filter whatsoever was a real eye-opener. I learned a lot and I hope you do too!To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ep 262Andrea McLean | Risking everything, navigating mental health challenges, low self-worth and following your gut.
Andrea McLean is one of those people you already feel as though you know. Not least because she's been a familiar face on British television for two decades but because she has such an easy, warm, open and welcoming way with everyone she meets. And let me tell you, in the flesh, this magnetism is even more charming than you could imagine. She is also blessed with a dry wit and an excellent side-eye!After years anchoring the liveliest panel on TV, the prime-time show Loose Women, she is now focused on her website and app This Girl is On Fire, which focuses on supporting women (and soon men) through midlife. It's not just her day job, it's a calling. Having navigated her own mental health struggles, crises of confidence and a constant drive to want to do better and be better, Andrea is committed to passing on and sharing everything that has worked for her with those who feel the same.I open each podcast by asking my guest 'what's your relationship like with risk?' and, as you can imagine, Andrea's answer, as someone who walked away from one of the most coveted jobs for women in broadcasting, is an incredible one... We discuss being in bad relationships, trying to make a bad thing work, knowing when to listen to advice - and when to ignore it - and why admitting you're wrong can sometimes be the greatest gift. Andrea was so open and honest and I'm thrilled to share this conversation with you...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Sign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ep 261Eddie Sternberg | How to get a multi-million pound film made, the stress of providing for a family while pursuing your dream and the challenge of time management.
Picture it. Peckham Rye, 2014. It’s a Friday night and I’m joining a friend’s birthday drinks. I’m nervous because I only know one other person there but one of the first people I chat with is @esternberg.director We immediately bonded over films and, after a brief disagreement over Marvel vs DC, chat about hearing writer, producer and director @rodriguez on a podcast that week. I tell Eddie that if he ever makes a film he too should have a trademark hat.Eddie mentions a film he’d like to make and something about the way he describes it makes me think he’s absolutely going to get it made.Fast-forward to 2022 and I Used to Be Famous, the film Eddie told me about that night, is a huge @netflixuk hit - hitting the Top 10 in the U.K. and US charts. It stars @edskrein@eleanormatsuura and @leojlong and earns high praise from critics, including @jameskingmovies and @kermodeandmayo This podcast tells the story of how the idea Eddie told me about in a bar nearly 10 years ago (a bar that features in the film!) became the hit film it is today. He took risks, made sacrifices, left his ego (but not his hat) at the door and grabbed every opportunity with both hands. Eddie made his idea, and his dream come true. If he can, so can you. Ep 260Rosie Green on life after infidelity, rediscovering yourself in your 40s and why she regrets not having more sex.
Rosie Green is an award-winning writer, columnist and best-selling author. On her return to the podcast, Rosie shares why writing a piece about the breakdown of her marriage, after writing about her blissful domesticity in a hugely popular magazine column, was the biggest risk she has ever taken, but how it was a risk that paid off in a big way!In addition to sharing her relationship with risk, Rosie talks about the excuses she's made for herself and others, the obstacles she's had to overcome on her journey of rediscovery after her marriage, why she'd have done anything to 'fix' her marriage but how life now is better than she could have ever imagined.Rosie's book How to Heal a Broken Heart is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Sign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey! Ask Me Anything | Your questions answered.
In this episode, Emma answers listener questions sent in via the Facebook Group. 1. Of all the habits you’ve tried, which are the ones you have stuck with in the long term and find most beneficial, and why?2. Are there any more contraception/hormone-related podcasts coming? I”m 38 and have just decided to come off the pill for no reason other than being fed up with pumping synthetic hormones into my body.3. I’d be interested to know how your early mornings are going now that you’re in winter. I found winter very hard and my early mornings disappeared. Now that it’s summer again, in New Zealand, I’m motivated to get up early again. Maybe it’s about changing what you do in the cold and dark. Exercise seemed to be the last thing my body wanted to do. I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences.4. I know this question will be hard to answer, maybe impossible, but what have you heard from your guest speakers (excluding myself) that most changed the way you think and what you most want others to know about? Book referenced: Everyday Trauma by Dr Tracey Shors.Multiple references in the following answers to The EC Method 5. How long do you give a new regime, either diet or fitness, before deciding it’s not working for you?6. What is an achievable target for weight loss? For example, if you want to lose three stone, how long do you think is sufficient to achieve and keep it off?7. How do you get motivated and stay motivated?8. How do you get back after falling off the wagon when the mental hurdle seems so massive? I don’t know if I’m explaining it well, but it feels daunting and that also you’re beating yourself up for being a failure. I didn’t want to be overweight at 40 but here I am, at nearly 50, and even more overweight.9. I always love finding out what surprising things have happened to people along the way. So my question would be, what did you expect to happen but didn’t.10. What expectations did you have going into the new habits or routines that you made that were happily surprised to see were unrealistic or even unhealthy? For example, I think ‘health’ and ‘fitness’ are sold to us as huge problem solvers. Almost as if when we become fitter we have to stop worrying about X, Y and Z too. So I guess I’m wondering if that kind of thinking influenced any of your goals and/or plans to reach those goals.11. How do you stop yourself from becoming fixated on healthy eating and fitness?12. How do you make changes so that they just become habits?13. How do you meal plan? When I go to a supermarket or try to plan weekly meals, I seem to forget all the foods I like. 14. How do you stick to a certain amount of calories per day without starting the cycle of restricting leading to binge eating?15. How do you plan fun in your life? As I get older and kids’ social lives take priority, I feel my life is sadly lacking fun. I actually can’t think of fund stuff anymore. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Sign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Hey!
