From the Vault | Dr Sam Bunting on the power and beauty of mental health.
This episode was originally published in April 2023.Dr Sam Bunting has been a familiar face on the beauty scene for some time. A cosmetic dermatologist who now has her own skincare line Dr Sam’s, Sam wanted to bridge the gap between medical dermatology and beauty. But as one of my go-to skincare experts, in my role as a beauty journalist, I’ve also learned that Sam understands the emotional stress of ‘bad skin’. We both suffered terribly from teenage acne and know all too well how much it can impact confidence and one’s sense of self. It’s these conversations I’ve had with Sam over the years that have led to broader, more deep and meaningful conversations about life, love and much more, which is why I was curious to hear the life lessons she’s learned, the challenges she’s had to overcome and how, as someone who can feel as though the world gets a little too much at times, she copes with the lows as well as the highs.Dr Sam’s is available now.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the Vault | Ruby Wax on mental health journeys, finding the good in the world and why you should always be hopeful.
This episode was first published in February 2022.My guest on this episode of the podcast is Ruby Wax. She is a writer, comedian, mental health campaigner and author and someone whose interviews over the years inspired me so it’s quite something to be interviewing her for this podcast…Ruby joins me in this episode to talk about her latest book And Now For The Good News - the much-needed tonic for our frazzled world. If you feel utterly distraught at the constant negative news cycle - the climate crisis, increasing costs of living, injustice, Covid and, as this episode goes live, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, then you may have stopped searching for the light of hope on the horizon. You may just assume that there’s only bad news out there in the world to be shared. Here’s the thing, if all we ever expect is bad news. If we assume that there is only bad news that chain reaction can make us feel hopeless, and helpless and fall into that space where we wake up in the morning and think ‘what’s the point?’ As someone whose particular shape and shade of depression took this form, a chronic apathy that eventually suffocated everything, I see this bad news cycle as something that can trigger the same feelings - even in the most hopeful of souls.Perhaps Ruby thought this too, which is why she went on a global search to find the good search. If you don’t know the light is there, you won’t know to see it. And so Ruby compiled all her findings into the book so we can all see there is hope and to equip us with a positive approach for a brighter world and, most importantly, for a better collective mental wellbeing.Ruby has been open about her own mental health issues over the years, something that was a source of great comfort to me at a time when I needed it, so during our conversation, I also quizzed her about how she emerged from her own struggles, the coping mechanisms she put in place and what she learned from a masters degree in cognitive-based therapy from Oxford University.I came away from the conversation feeling so inspired, not least because speaking to Ruby it was a reminder to always be curious about the world around you rather than scared of it, how vulnerability can immediately neutralise tension and how, though it might feel hard sometimes, it’s important to look for and follow the light, because it is there. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Johann Hari | What you REALLY need to know about Ozempic.
Weight loss drugs are a hot topic, but are they a magic pill or is there a dark side to drugs such as Ozempic? Johann Hari has spent years investigating the genesis of the drug, how it works, as well as the benefits and the risks, plus he is also taking it. In this episode, we discuss how impactful these drugs could be on society, the risks that go hand-in-hand with taking them and why we've been conditioned to eat the kinds of food that could make us need these drugs in the first place.Johann's book Magic Pill is out now.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the Vault | Sabrina Cohen-Hatton on Exceeding All Expectations
This episode was originally published in March 2023.One of the great privileges of creating this podcast is getting to see the world through the lens of other people’s experiences. Seeing the world through Sabrina’s eyes was utterly enthralling. She experienced homelessness in her teens, now holds one of the most senior positions in the Fire Brigade and has multiple qualifications making her an expert leading international expert on risk-critical decision-making in crises.I ask all my guests, ‘What’s your relationship like with risk?’ and as someone whose day job involves dealing with something as unpredictable as fire, Sabrina’s answers are a perspective I hadn’t heard before. From the Vault | Anna Mathur on how to overcome People Pleasing
One thing about interviewing psychotherapists is how tempting it can be to open up about the things that I am personally struggling with, or have struggled with. It’s not something I intended to do but in navigating Anna Mathur’s life lessons we stumbled upon the territory of people pleasing and, well, that was it.Both of us have found ourselves crippled by the effects of people pleasing and these have shown up in Anna’s life in ways that have had a huge impact. I always open the show by asking my guests what their relationship with risk is like and it’s interesting that a big risk for Anna, and me, was to put ourselves first. If you’re afflicted with the disease to please then this episode is definitely for you.Anna’s books are available now.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the vault | Poppy Delbridge on how to transform your life.
When it comes to alternative therapy I am, by nature and also from years of working as a journalist in the health, beauty and wellness space, a cynic. For years, I’d get drawn into to fads and trends by their razzle-dazzle and now, to avoid this, I like to see proof in the shape of data, clinical trials and evidence. So you may be surprised to see Poppy Delbridge, aka The Tapping Queen, as a guest on the show. Tapping is a form of therapy that involves tapping your face and upper body to release stress, minimise trauma and ‘raise your emotional baseline’. But, despite sounding ‘woo woo’ has a raft of evidence from neuroscience, and psychology that proves the claims around its benefits. This podcast is about learning from my guests' life lessons and given how integral tapping has been to Poppy, in times of trauma, change and flux, it was a fascinating insight into Poppy and how she has dealt with life’s challenges.Poppy’s book Tapping In is available now.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the Vault | Johann Hari on how your attention is being stolen...
This episode was originally published in January 2022We're not multitasking, the truth is that our focus is so scattered that we're slowly losing our ability to pay attention. Yes, we can blame our phones and all those tantalising apps that seduce us from our home screens, but there's a lot more at play and that's what Johann Hari has spent years investigating, speaking psychologists, sociologists, psychiatrists and more to find out what's really going on.Johann's book Stolen Focus is available now.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the Vault | Andrea McLean on escaping toxic relationships and finding your passion.
Andrea McLean is one of those people you already feel as though you know. Not least because she's been a familiar face on British television for two decades but because she has such an easy, warm, open and welcoming way with everyone she meets. And let me tell you, in the flesh, this magnetism is even more charming than you could imagine. She is also blessed with a dry wit and an excellent side-eye!After years anchoring the liveliest panel on TV, the prime-time show Loose Women, she is now focused on her website and app This Girl is On Fire, which focuses on supporting women (and soon men) through midlife. It's not just her day job, it's a calling. Having navigated her own mental health struggles, crises of confidence and a constant drive to want to do better and be better, Andrea is committed to passing on and sharing everything that has worked for her with those who feel the same.I open each podcast by asking my guest 'what's your relationship like with risk?' and, as you can imagine, Andrea's answer, as someone who walked away from one of the most coveted jobs for women in broadcasting, is an incredible one... We discuss being in bad relationships, trying to make a bad thing work, knowing when to listen to advice - and when to ignore it - and why admitting you're wrong can sometimes be the greatest gift.Andrea was so open and honest and I'm thrilled to share this conversation with you...To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! From the Vault | Estée Lalonde's greatest life lesson to date.
This episode was originally published in February 2023.'m so glad to welcome Estée Lalonde back to the podcast, especially as this conversation coincides with some exciting developments in her professional and personal life. There's her body care brand Mirror Water and a new relationship...Her career is a truly incredible one: she followed her boyfriend to London, became a part of the beauty blogging community and has gone on to make her social media and Youtube a wildly successful business. She has shared her life with millions of followers and as she evolves from influencer to businesswoman, she's opening up about the highs and lows of taking huge risks, knowing what you want from life, people and relationships and why you have to advocate for yourself.I've known Estée for a few years now and I always come away from time spent with her feeling better for having seen the world through her eyes and, I'm just going to say it, I think this might be the best conversation I've had with her in the time we've known each other.Estée is always honest, real and straight-talking so hearing her share her life lessons with no filter whatsoever was a real eye-opener. From the Vault | Dean Piper on the 'murky' world of celebrity journalism.
EThis episode was originally published in February 2023.Dean Piper! I can't lie, I enjoyed this conversation with Dean immensely and actually found it to be an incredibly cathartic experience too.Dean and I were both 'celebrity journalists' at a time when celebrity journalism was called-in to editors via brick phones and gathered on the dancefloor at nightclubs or in the loos at award ceremonies. It was the era of celebrity weddings, showbiz couples with portmanteau nicknames and when daily sales of newspapers and magazines running showbiz gossip ran into the millions. However, while it was fun for a while, about ten years ago Dean turned his back on 'that life'. In fact, he didn't just turn on his heel, he walked out with no job to go to, no plan and no idea what the future would hold. This conversation details why Dean has never looked back, why he felt it was time to leave and how disappointed he is that in the ten years since he left, celebrity journalism has become so murky and destructive. We discuss some of his biggest regrets while working on tabloids, how he got some of his juiciest scoops back in the day and what happens, and who stops calling when you walk away from the most powerful job in showbiz. If you enjoy Dean's insights here then you'll love his Substack where he's writing a weekly column about his life in showbiz. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe nowHey! Natalie Anderson | Small wins, big results!
Talk about a great natter with a fantastic friend. Natalie Anderson is what you might describe as 'good energy', incredible company, good chat and always keen to pass on the latest snippet of advice to make someone else's life easier. That's one of the reasons she started The Capsule, a place where you canfind all of Natalie’s recommendations for a healthy, happy lifestyle - essentially taking the guesswork and legwork out of finding the things you need and the things you love. What she started talking about was her own experience with anxiety, something she kept private but started sharing solutions to on The Capsule before opening up about her own experiences and creating a community of women who felt the same and were as keen to find solutions and balms as she was. What started as a blog, following her time as a columnist at Hello magazine, has turned into a huge enterprise and I’m delighted to learn what more’s to come from Natalie and The Capsule and find out what’s working for her in 2024!To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Trinny's back and how things have changed since she last visited the podcast. Trinny London, her makeup and skincare brand, was a start-up and now it's a huge, global success. Dare I say, it's a big of a juggernaut now, which means the last few years have involved some steep learning curves for Trinny who has had to step up to the role of CEO. Dr Ramani's recent visit to the podcast was so popular that I'm re-publishing her visit to the show from 2021.‘Pushing back on narcissism is a human rights issue’.Dr Ramani Durvasula is a clinical psychologist, best-selling author and professor of psychology who shares her expertise on narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder on the latest episode of the podcast. The term ‘narcissist’ is bandied around a lot but it’s an overused and misunderstood word, which is why I asked Dr Ramani to join me on the show. During our conversation she helps unpick and unpack its complexities, what it is, what it isn’t and how to navigate the world knowing that being a victim of narcissism can cause you real harm.If you think you understand what a narcissist is and how to spot one then think again…In this episode, @drramani shares:•The difference between narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder.•Why the label ‘narcissist’ is too broad.•Whether narcissism is innate or learned.•The emotional damage a narcissist can cause and why the fallout can be so devastating for the victim.•The types of people who are most likely to get caught in a narcissist’s trap.•Why narcissism is rewarded in today’s society and why it’s turning narcissism into an epidemic.•Whether a narcissist ever gets their just deserts.•Whether you should ever tell a narcissistic off, and much more…Dr Ramani’s books are available now at all good bookstores:Don’t You Know Who I Am? How to stay sane in an era of narcissism, entitlement and incivility.Should I Stay or Should I Go? Dr Ramani Durvasula | How to Survive a Narcissist.
What is the impact of narcissistic abuse? And can you ever recover? Dr Ramani Durvasual is arguably the world's leading expert on narcissism and her books and YouTube channel are testament to her breadth of knowledge on the topic. However, while defining, describing and identifying narcissism has become a widespread pastime, how actually to recover from the effects of narcissistic abuse is much less talked about - until now.Dr Ramani's latest book It's Not You: How to Identify and Heal from Narcissistic People delves into how to put yourself back together, how to be wise to and avoid gaslighting and how to navigate the world without being sucked into narcissist's gravitational pull.On her first visit to the podcast, Dr Ramani helped me realised my role as an enabler and in this conversation we discuss how to build the emotional toolkit required to navigate a world with difficult people. Bullet Points | Are you ready for a new YOU?
Who knew a wardrobe clear-out, which was more about not contributing to the cycle of fast, disposable fashion would also cause a bit of a 'rethink' about how I want to present myself in the world.Well, turns out that selling on Vinted has opened my eyes to a few things about my wardrobe that had nothing to do with clothes and/or fashion. Amanda Lamb | Reaching Your Potential and loving your 50s
You always have a good time with Amanda Lamb. That's been my experience since knowing her; she always leaves me laughing, is the first to give you a sideways look about an in-joke and is makes you feel amazing for having spent time in her company. So how wonderful to have committed her genuine friendship and authenticity to audio in this conversation where we discuss how she felt invisible in her 40s and is now loving her 50s, being numbed by anti-anxiety medication and the dreams and aspirations she still wants to achieve. Bullet Points | Are you being scammed?
In this episode I bring you a rant about self-help and what I think has been a huge change to the way we look for support and advice. Katy Hill | Living a LIMITLESS Life
I adored this conversation with Katy Hill. You may recognise her face, and voice, from her time on iconic children's entertainment show Blue Peter but Katy is now a personal development and empowerment coach and established LIMITLESS by Katy Hill in 2018.Suffice it to say, if you are in need of a boost, this is the conversation to listen to. We cover everything from knowing what your dreams are, being comfortable with what your version of success looks like and how to plot a path towards your best life.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Bullet Points | How to Avoid Burnout.
January seemed to go on forever and it might be why so many of us are feeling depleted, tired and burnt out before the first month was over, but in this episode I share what I think might be a useful way to re-frame how you look at productivity and avoid burnout and exhaustion altogether. Stacey Duguid | Breakdowns, Living in the Present and Being Seen.
EStacey Duguid has my heart after this conversation. We have many mutual friends but this was our first proper chat and, as you'll hear, it's exactly that - a searingly honest get-to-you-know-you conversation that just so happened to be committed to audio. I love an open guest who isn't afraid to tell it how it is and that's exactly what Stacey is.From navigating infidelity, divorce, unhappy relationships, mental and emotional breakdowns, going back to bed, losing friends on the way, the discomfort of mid-life and what it really means to be neurodivergent in the world... This is a wide-ranging conversation and I sincerely hope you love it!To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Bullet Points | Shall we do a 'no buy' together?
Don't hang up! You don't have to but what if she just spent a little time looking at our spending habits and how we could spend our money a little more wisely? I say this as someone who loves the dopamine high of a next day delivery or splurge when I'm out at the shops but who is realising more and more, how unnecessary it all is...To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Kierra Campbell | Not taking 'No' for an Answer, Surviving a Challenging Childhood and Being a good mum.
Kierra Campbell blew me away with her honesty in this episode. She really is what dream guests are made of; honest, willing to go to uncomfortable, sometimes difficult places, but always keen to make sure listeners have a great time and hopefully come away with something useful for their time spent with us.Kierra is one half of interior design duo Poodle & Blonde and we meet her when she's poised to make some serious changes in her life and though it's a lot of change at once, she's seeing it as a sign that she's ready for growth and new adventures. It's a refreshing and reassuring attitude and one I intend to emulate next time I feel overwhelmed.During our time together Kierra shared her life lessons learned from a difficult, unstable childhood, navigating the business world as an young, black female entrepreneur and how her business and business partner taught her how to trust...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Bullet Points | I'm fatphobic?
Talking about weight loss and body image is controversial in a way that for me, as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, is hard to comprehend. But as someone who has battled their weight for most of their life and now finds themselves having overcome that struggle, I wanted to talk about it. Apparently, that makes me fatphobic. Joanna Jensen | The Integrity of Business
I had so much fun chatting with Joanna Jensen. Not only is she the founder of one of the most successful brands of recent years, Child's Farm, she's also an open book and, as you can hear in this conversation, will to talk about anything. Whether it's the ethics behind a sustainable brand, generational shifts in work ethic or how to consume mindfully, she has a well-formed opinion on everything. Laura Adlington | Yo-Yo Dieting, Fatphobia and Body Acceptance.
Conversations about weight, size and shape have never been more loaded or volatile, which is why I am so pleased to have had Laura Adlington on the podcast. This felt like a really important conversation about the complex issues about weight, body shape, size and everything that goes hand-in-hand with complex and toxic relationships with and around food. Whether it's addiction, eating disorder or mental illness, it's something that can be all-consuming and life-limiting. Laura has interrogated her relationship with her own body and food issues in her book Diet Starts Monday, but also takes a closer look at the ways in which diet culture and anti-fat bias seep into our consciousness and make us feel less than.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.Hey! Solo Episode | New Year, New You?
It's 1st January, which means you're probably being bombarded with lots of 'new year, new you' messaging and potentially feeling as though there's something about yourself you need to change or improve upon. Well, I reject this idea. Instead of searching for flaws, let's celebrate all the things we know to be true having lived our lives and made mistakes. Joe Nucci | Are you defined by your trauma?
Joe Nucci has gone viral for his straight-talking posts about mental health and trauma. While it's no bad thing that we've become more comfortable talking about mental health and that struggling with mental health issues is now far less taboo than it was a decade ago, there are elements of the conversation that are unhelpful. Being defined by your mental health doesn't afford you the ability to make changes, progress and move beyond a diagnosis and it's this which Joe is challenging. When I saw his posts, I knew he had to be welcomed onto the show to expand on his position and explain how he positively sees the conversation changing and moving forward.
