208 // Magic Moment: Are You Defined By Motherhood?

While the sentiment of being defined by Motherhood can be endearing, in today's Magic Moment Felica discusses what she feels could be troubling with this conversation and how we can reframe ourselves as whole persons as opposed to defining ourselves inside a role. She discusses how defining ourselves in a finite role can create dissonance in our authentic self and how we can let go of control and see our multitudes to prevent tunnel vision in our parenting. There is no one right way, we are all unique in our families and in finding ourselves we will be better for our children and those we care for. 203 // Meditation: Letting Fear Go With Taralyn

This is a live recording of Taralyn actually walking you (and her yoga students during a class) through the fear release guided meditation that she has been using regularly herself for years. The first 6 minutes are the subconscious deep guided work, and then there is about 9 minutes of relaxation for you to enjoy before she walks you up out of the deep release. If you'd like to skip the center relaxation part, you can finish the guided meditation, and then skip to 14:30 so you be sure to be counted up out of the deep subconscious state. So go ahead, find a quiet place for you to lay or sit down, and enjoy. You can use this guided meditation over and over with different fears. This is a public episode. 200 // Being Real: Navigating the Struggles AND the Joys of Parenthood Authentically

This is our 200th episode!!! Thank you all for your amazing support!!! We are soooo grateful for the most amazing listeners in the entire world:).Sometimes, it feels like it's the cool kid thing to do to complain about parenthood all the time. On the other hand, it can be easy to portray our children as heavenly cherubs who do no wrong and parentland as being full of only bliss. It's a tricky balance to find between being honest about the fact that parenting isn’t unicorns and roses all the time, but also realizing that it is also a great honor and really meaningful work to engage in.In this episode, we talk about that balance and wrestle with how to be authentic to ourselves, recognizing and asking for help when it’s hard, and soaking in the moments of love and enjoyment when they come. We hope you leave it feeling like you aren’t alone in your struggles and in your joys. You Are More Than a Body

How do you feel about your body? We live in a world that prizes a narrow body ideal, and it is easy to find our own perceptions of ourselves swayed by this view. In this episode, we discuss the brilliant body image work of Lexie and Lindsay Kite in their book, More Than a Body. We discuss how we can leave the waters of self objectication, where we experience the world through an outsider’s perspective of our bodies, onto the firm land of embodiment, where we can truly experience life IN our bodies, through our own experience of them. It’s a game changing concept.We address issues like positive body image, and agree that “Positive body image isn't believing your body looks good; it is knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks.” It’s a revolutionary concept that we believe can change the world for the better for men and women, as we reject objectification and make peace with our bodies and experience truly living inside of ourselves.THE BOOK THAT INSPIRED USMore Than a Body // Lindsay Kite PhD and Lexie Kite PhDRELATED EPISODES:Teaching Our Daughters to Live Wholeheartedly Raising Boys Part 1Raising Boys Part 2Sponsor:GABB WIRELESSWe LOVE devices that help our kids stay safe and be able to adventure while still being able to contact us safely and allow us to know where they are without being the kind of technology that steals their mental health and attention. It’s one thing to set aside time to sleep. That’s tricky enough. However, even when we allow ourselves the time to sleep, sometimes our kids simply don’t cooperate in allowing us to get several hours of consecutive sleep. What can we do then? In this episode, we address some coping strategies to help you when you are dealing with this special brand of sleep deprivation.We also talk about how it can be tricky to find connection time with our kids once school starts and give some tips that have helped us.RELATED EPISODES:How Light Affects Sleep, Fertility, Our Childre/s Behavior, and More With Andy MantLINKS WE MENTIONEDJanet Lansbury episode on sleep: https://www.janetlansbury.com/2021/12/a-holistic-approach-to-baby-and-toddler-sleep-with-grace-koinange/BluBlox (Now called Bon Charge) Website: https://boncharge.comSponsor:GABB WIRELESSWe LOVE devices that help our kids stay safe and be able to adventure while still being able to contact us safely and allow us to know where they are without being the kind of technology that steals their mental health and attention. 194 // Stoking Your Own Fire

Is there a way to follow our personal path and passions, and have a family and/or a career? Life is about making lots of choices and finding balance, and there is no one answer that works for everyone. In this episode, Taralyn talks about keeping the embers of dreams alive while you try to find that balance for yourself and what works in your life. Her three tips for deepening the experience of developing your own gifts are to 1) remember what you loved as child, 2) carve out a little bit of space every day to keep furthering your gifts as you incubate them for another season in your life, and 2) periodically finding some time to do a deep plunge into whatever your gifts are. 192: How to Live Our Best Lives WITHOUT Living Through a Screen {Best Of}

Remember what it was like to be a teenager? Do you remember the insecurity around discovering yourself? Now, imagine your teenage self with not only a school full of peers to compare yourself to, but with an entire internet full of people to measure up to, to compete with for likes, and pictures of parties you weren’t invited to. Can you imagine how hard that would be? Well many of our kids are experiencing just that. They are floundering in the deep end of a virtual pool before their brains are developed enough to metaphorically swim.The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. In this episode, we are thrilled to discuss this important subject with social activist and champion of giving back our children a healthy childhood, the late Collin Kartchner. We are devastated at his passing but want his legacy and his message to live on.Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits, which can to dependence, and provides the false sense of connection that kids are craving. This can create a vacuum in their minds that may lead to depression and lack of connection to people around them.Although this information at first paints a bleak picture for childhood, we discuss the beautiful antidote that is at all of our fingertips: connection. REAL connection with actual humans in our lives. Collin offers concrete advice about trying out a family screen detox, and gives us lots of inspiring suggestions on how to increase the connection in our own home with the people we love. His rallying cry to #savethekids will truly inspire you and leave you hopeful that you can truly make a difference in your child’s life (and how to model freedom from screen dependence yourself:)!Original Air Date: 8.31.2020RELATED EPISODESFinding Solitude Through Digital MinimalismCurbing Your Screen AttachmentHow to WAKE UP to Your LifeORGANIFIThis weeks sponsor Organifi is loved here at Find the Magic for their whole food based supplements for that extra boost when your daily diet isn’t up to speed! 190 // Finding Acceptance, Enjoyment, and Enthusiasm with Anything We Do {Best Of}

Have you ever been in the rut of the everyday? It can feel like a slog at times moving from one mundane task to the next. This shows up magnified in parenting when we are stuck on the treadmill of cleaning up spills, changing diapers, driving carpool, planning meals only to fall asleep exhausted and enter the next day that way! We easily catch ourselves living for our next date night, weekend away or perhaps even that day when “life will be easier, our kids will be older, we will have more money” etc. This episode we want to challenge that status quo. We want to share a concept with you that can awaken you to each of these moments and help you find the acceptance, joy and perhaps even enthusiasm in all of the parts of this life, small and big.Original Air Date: 9.23.19RELATED EPISODES:Escaping the Trance of Unworthiness & Finding Self Acceptance WithinFinding Joy and Enthusiasm in Every DayStaying Open to the Present Tapping Into the Abundance Inside UsSeeing Ourselves Clearly in the Role of MotherTHE BOOKS AND LINKS THAT INSPIRED US:A New Earth // Eckhart TolleOprah’s Interview with EckhartFind us on our website: findthemagic.coEPISODE SPONSORS:Gabb Wireless Offer your kids freedom and give yourself peace of mind with Gabb Wireless! 189 // Our Top Tips for Parenting Boys {Best Of}

How do we raise boys in this fabulously challenging time? In this episode, we revisit our very favorite pieces of knowledge on the subject by combining our two most popular discussions about it. We address issues like how to cultivate respectful, strong, and kind boys by channeling their natural strengths (as opposed to simply suppressing all of their tendencies and making them feel like they are terrible all the time). We explore some fascinating psychology and hopefully help all of us raise boys who become men who are whole, respectful, humans who make this world a better place:).We also review the four pillars of connection, getting outside, sleep, and nutrition, and we tackle the challenges and opportunities that boys face at school and learning. We address the research on screen time and boys’ brains, and give you all sorts of tips to make screen time a pleasant activity with boundaries instead of an unlimited source of distraction and dependency. We have such an AMAZING opportunity as parents to really create a community where they can thrive with their own natural strengths, and we can help create a world where boys are taught to have emotional intelligence and access their internal world with confidence and love. 186 // Nourishing Our Bodies: A Form of Self Care with Ali Essig

Our bodies are our conduits for experiencing this life. It makes sense that caring for them from a place of love is a worthy investment for us. Self care is part of wholehearted living for both our body and our soul. Sometimes, when people talk about self care, they mention expensive hair products and elaborate pedicures. At Find the Magic, we are big fans of the kind of soul filling self care that is more about true fulfillment (think meditation, time with God, feeding our intellect, etc.). So, when it comes to our bodies, it makes sense that we like the idea of going beyond image based self care and going deeper into truly nourishing our body with foods and love. In this episode, Ali Essig, a plant-based holistic nutritionist and educator, gives us lots of priceless information on how vegetables and fruit are a beautiful, accessible form of self care. She gives practical tips on how to incorporate more of these life improving ingredients into our family’s eating habits in a really simple and reachable way.You can find more from Ali at www.Plantwhys.com and on instagram @plantwhysShe offers a $37 mini course and our listeners can get 20% off with the code: EATFORLONGEVITYRELATED EPISODESFrench Kids Eat Everything (and So Can Yours!)HOW TO Eat With IntuitionMaking Dinner Meaningful and Uncomplicated With Claire TanseyBOOKS AND LINKS WE MENTIONEDThe Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest // Dan BuettnerEPISODE SPONSORS:Chamonix SkincareThis amazing skincare line is clean, comfortable, and produces wonderful results. 185 // Aligning Our Personality with Our Soul Using the Work of Gary Zukav

Here at Find the Magic, we like to go deep. In fact, we love it. In this episode, we go way deep discussing Gary Zukav’s book, The Seat of the Soul. We can see why Oprah loves his work so much.We explore how the personality is different from the soul, but “when the personality comes fully to serve the energy of its soul, that is authentic empowerment.” It takes practice and awareness to differentiate between the workings of our own personality and the growth of our soul. The tools we can use for this process are choosing intentions, adding clarity, practicing forgiveness, and distinguishing true needs from false ones.The umbrella that covers all of these topics is love. “An authentically powered person lives in love. Love is the energy of the soul. Love is what heals the personality. There is nothing that cannot be healed by love. There is nothing but love.”― Gary ZukavRELATED EPISODESFinding Joy and Enthusiasm in Every DayTHE BOOK THAT INSPIRED US:The Seat of the Soul // Gary ZukavEPISODE SPONSOR:Chamonix Skincare:This amazing skincare line is clean, comfortable, and produces wonderful results. Understanding Praise and How We Can Use It to Give Our Kids Confidence Instead of Insecurity

We all want our kids to feel confident. We want them to feel capable. In this episode, we delve into research on what words we use to encourage our kids. The concept of praise is a fascinating one, and some methods yield results that are opposite of what we intend. We discuss the difference between effort based praise and results based praise, and why it’s worth practicing the first. We also explore when it is really powerful to use identity praise when instilling values, and we describe how gratitude, love and authenticity are the keys in the end to helping our kids feel confident as we delight in their existence with them. Park Chat: Fostering Independence, Can I Selectively Ignore My Kid & Quiet Time Woes

Have you ever been trying to leave the house when your toddler insists on attempting (unsuccessfully) to do up all of her buttons on her own shirt? Has your child ever asked you to “watch this!” 17 times in 5 minutes? Have you ever wondered how to actually transition into quiet time from naptime to claim a little bit of rejuvenation time in the day?In this episode, we have a friend to friend discussion like we have been having at parks for the last decade. The issues we talk about are ones that Katelin is currently facing and we get often from our listeners. It is a balancing act to try to allow age appropriate independence while still actually getting places. We also have tips on how to balance spending attention without spending all our time watching the new tricks our kids learn (wiggling toes while IN SHOES? Impressive…:). We also share our experience about the life saving quiet time habit, and what worked for us and what didn't.LINK WE MENTIONED:Johnson Files Instagram: Watch This!RELATED EPISODESMagic Moment // Why Are We So Overwhelmed?Prepping Kids for New Babies, Earning vs. Rewarding, Quiet Time Tips, and Our Favorite Life HacksGuidance for the Changing Seasons of MotherhoodThe Martyr Effect. Turns Out, We CAN'T Do It all. Enjoying Your Limited, Beautiful Life

“Any finite life — even the best one you could possibly imagine — is therefore a matter of ceaselessly waving goodbye to possibility.” –Oliver BurkmanIf we live to be 80 years old, that means we will live approximately 4000 weeks. Most people, when asked, guess a much higher number. We are, by nature of our mortal lives here on earth, limited in our experience of time. Realizing this is both humbling and liberating. Once we realize that we cannot do EVERYTHING (because it is impossible) and that the present moment is all we ever actually have (because even that limited 4000 number is not a guarantee), we can get onto truly living. Living now. Living fully.In this episode, we discuss how to try to balance holding a vision of what we want in the future while still living in the present moment. There is freedom when we realize that we can honor the past and the future, and still recognize where we really are–which is right here, right now.BOOKS THAT INSPIRED US:Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals // Oliver BurkemanStart Finishing // Charlie GilkeyRELATED EPISODESDiscovering YOUR Life EssentialsEssentialism / How to Do Less But BetterFinding Joy and Enthusiasm in Every DayThank you for the kind reviews! Magic Moment // Why Are We So Overwhelmed?

"Put the big rocks in first"; a brilliant analogy by a brilliant mind BUT what if there are just too many big rocks? How can we acknowledge the myth that we can do it all if only we prioritize the "main" things. With all the work we do here around value alignment and setting priorities our world just plain has too many things that we want to say yes to. Saying no to something we know isn't aligned isn't the hard thing, saying no to something we wish could be a yes IS THE THING. Often times we live on the brink of complete overwhelm because there are so many good things we would love to do. As mothers we also "should" ourselves right into the ground. Layering expectation onto ourselves until we have no room to breathe. How can we dig ourselves out from under this pile of big rocks and "should's"?In this episode we talk about the power of an embodied YES and how we can plan based on seasons of our lives. We also discuss recognizing the fuel you are running on (hint hint fear, shame, need for approval are all unsustainable fuel sources!). Magic Moment: Embracing Our Children's (and Our Own) Flaws

In this episode, Felica delves into the idea of embracing our children’s flaws. She discusses the jewish term, yetzer hara, and explains how it looks in real life to see the less desirable aspects of our children’s personalities from a place of clarity. For all of us out there who have darker sides ourselves (oh that’s all of us), and have people in our families with flaws (also everyone), this refreshing episode will help us reframe how we look at the qualities that often frustrate us.BOOK SHE MENTIONEDBlessing of a Skinned Knee // Wendy Mogel Ph.DEPISODE SPONSORS:MamaZen: Mindful Parenting AppIf you’re experiencing impatience, anger, anxiety, and feel frustrated with your kids, then you need to get this app. MamaZen will teach you how to control your negative emotions so you can deal with your kids’ difficult behavior with more love and patience.
