Patience with Aggressive Behavior, Friendships in Motherhood and Making Peace with Your Inner Landscape

We dive into a wide range of listener questions today! We start by exploring what the solitude of 2020 brought into our life, how to come to peace with our inner landscape and find connection where we can. We spend time on a deep dive into one of our most asked questions, dealing with our kids aggression and when they hurt other kids. We can remain calm, lean into emotions AND not become attached and let their emotions control ours. Our children's lives are intimately entwined in ours; this reveals itself in our third listener question about dealing with situations when our kids won't tell us their secret feelings or share their emotions. And finally we explore friendships in mothers, types of friends we need and how to deal with the loss of friendship that is no longer serving you or your child. Living Life Untamed and Releasing Others to do the Same (Untamed by Glennon Doyle)

“Feelings are for feeling. All of them. Even the hard ones.” Glennon DoyleThis is our 100th episode! In this landmark episode, we explore what it means to step into our own power. There are lots of things we are told as we grow throughout childhood and into adulthood. Many of those things are wonderful and they serve us in creating a life that is true and beautiful. However, there are also things that we learn that simply don’t serve us. One of the joyful realities of adulthood is that we actually have the power to identify what we have learned and CHOOSE which things are true and beautiful, and which are not for us.We discuss the work of Glennon Doyle in her new book, Untamed, and discuss the deep topics that she brings up. She challenges the way we look at ourselves, and truly helps us see what dialogues we are having with ourselves because of society’s pressures, and walks us through how to authentically connect with who we truly are. We cover topics like how we cannot selectively numb our feelings; to lean into one, you must learn to lean into them all.Related Episodes:How to Own Your Own Desires and The Art of Intimacy with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-FifeBooks that inspired us:Untamed // Glennon DoyleIntuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works // Evelyn Tribole and Elyse ReschLove Warrior: A Memoir // Glennon DoyleHere is a list of ALL our favorite books, we use Audible as our library. How to Own Your Desires & the Art of Intimacy with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife

Physical intimacy is an important aspect of our lives, and yet it is also an area that for many people, can be a space that is complicated, difficult, and even emotionally or physically unpleasant. In this episode, we have a conversation with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, a relationship and sexuality educator and coach, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, with a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology. In this conversation, we discussed this important topic and specifically address how you as a woman can own your own desire in a positive and empowering way. We address how developing yourself as a whole person, making room for yourself, and belonging to your own desires instead of only belonging to others and sacrificing yourself for their desires and needs are all key components to owning your own sexuality (and your own life).Intimacy takes courage. It means you are willing to be knowable--even the flaws and the scary parts. Sexuality is just a part of intimacy, and Dr. Finlayson-Fife beautifully addresses how we can bring our full selves unapologetically to our partners, and as we learn to do that, we can learn to fully bring ourselves unapologetically to the world. We can show up as a whole, flawed and glorious person in our own lives. As we acknowledge and validate our own desires, we are able to own them. Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s words are both empowering and inspiring. You can learn more about Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife and her course offerings at her website, https://www.finlayson-fife.comRelated Episodes:Putting Connection With Our Spouse FirstHere is a list of ALL our favorite books, we use Audible as our library. Seeing Ourselves Clearly in the Role of Mother

Society has often put the role of motherhood either on a pedestal or in a cage, and both are small spaces from which to thrive. Few roles combine such responsibility and power with such possibility for shame and unhelpful pressure. Because of this, the topic of seeing our own role as mother clearly and with curiosity is an important one.Something that every single one of us have in common is the fact that we have a mother. Some of us know our mothers, while some of us have never met her. Our relationship with our mother might be simple, joyful, complicated, toxic, or countless adjectives in between. Every situation is different, and regardless of what that relationship looks like, we can find wisdom as we address that relationship. In this episode, we discuss the fascinating work of Harriet Lerner and explore how it is possible to learn from the things our own mothers did or didn’t do with a combination of both clarity and grace. According to Lerner, addressing that relationship in our own mind and heart is something that is helpful to us as we approach our life and our own parenting. As we gain clarity with this relationship, we are able to see ourselves more clearly and truly learn to find the magic that we can access in this powerful role.Books we mentioned:Harriet Lerner on Mothers and Daughters: Breaking the Patterns that Keep You Stuck // Harriet Lerner https://amzn.to/2HzsGPIRelated Episodes:Guidance for the Changing Seasons of Motherhoodhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/find-the-magic/id1448424341?i=1000466525358The Martyr Effect. Creating Roots Through Family Traditions (Entitlement Trap by Linda Eyre and Richard Eyre)

The holiday season can feel overwhelming because we feel the need to do everything to make them exciting and special. However, the beauty of having our own families is that we can intentionally choose the holiday activities that serve us and let go of the ones that don’t. The magic of family traditions is that they help our children feel a sense of belonging and gives them roots, which helps them identify with the connection of the family instead of peer groups and can help with their behavior. In this episode, we share the traditions that serve us with simplicity and joy and give you many options to try with your own family. We talk about how sometimes all it takes is to recognize the traditions we already have and capitalize on naming them and making them reoccurring and special. From Halloween fun, ways to be grateful in November and loads of Christmas and winter traditions we hope that this episode inspires you to create new memories with your family and recognize your current traditions to turn them into magical ones that repeat every year!Books we mentioned:Hold on to Your Kids // Gabor MateThe Entitlement Trap // Linda and Richard EyreFood Nanny Rescues Dinner // Liz EdmundsThe recipes we talked about are on our our website under Episode 96: www.findthemagic.co Related Episodes:Systems and Values for Easier Days and Stronger Family ConnectionsHere is a list of ALL our favorite books, we use Audible as our library. A good night’s sleep is an elusive goal we simply dream about but rarely attain. We all know the benefits of quality sleep for us and our children, but we find ourselves at a loss for how to improve it. In this episode, we have a fascinating conversation with Andy Mant, founder of Blublox glasses. Habits Deep Dive / Why Simple Changes Compound into Big Results (Atomic Habits by James Clear)

It can appear like people who are successful at achieving their goals simply possess an incredible amount of self control. That kind of belief lets us off the hook from creating the life we really want--we simply lack the self discipline, right? Well, it turns out that as we create habits that add value to our lives, we actually require LESS self control, not more. As we change our environment and our cues and rewards, we have the power to eliminate negative habits and build positive ones that can transform our life. Habits are the key to making our goals a reality. We discuss the science behind habits and explore the work of experts on the subject. We break down the steps for creating a good habit (or ridding yourself of a bad one), and give you applicable tips that you can use right away in your life. We share what has really worked in our own lives as we have experimented with habits and unlocked the magic of things like habit stacking. Growing Up Alongside Our Kids with Upbringing

Our child’s resistance to cooperate or push back against our wishes can be alarming. However, it is possible to actually welcome the resistance instead of desperately trying to control it. In this episode, we collaborate with Hannah and Kelty, cohosts of the parenting podcast Upbringing and explore the concept of resistance and how we as parents can respectfully and emphatically create and hold boundaries while still honoring our childrens resistance.Hannah and Kelty are certified coaches in Simplicity Parenting, Positive Discipline and trained in the respectful parenting approach, RIE. They have an abundance of parenting knowledge and they share with us their wonderful parenting tips which include their Freedom Model, and the RESIST technique to help you know exactly what to do as you come up against your childrens’ resistance. We talk about leaning into our child’s resistance as we work to recognize our triggers and grow up beside them! You can find more about Upbringing on their website, Upbringing.co, where you can find their shop, their podcast, and their helpful models. Let Your Phone Be a Tool Not Your Master: Screen Detox Tips and Boundaries for Real Life

We can all use a little less screen time in our lives and the lives of our kids. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to know exactly where to start when attempting to set boundaries and help our families become less dependent on entertaining technology to get us through the day. After a particularly inspiring conversation with Collin Kartcher a few weeks ago (see link below to listen), we have, in this episode, taken the conversation even deeper and walk through how to apply the principles in real life. We discuss how screen boundaries have worked in our own homes with hacks and tips that we have found to be immensely helpful in keeping technology in the place of a useful tool instead of the master it has become in so many of our lives. We address not only how to find freedom from technology, but how to also foster the antidote to this dependence: connection with real humans, in real life.Want to motivate yourself a bit more? Try plugging in your own daily screen time into the following equation. Pull out your phone, check your daily screen time (or, look at your daily social media time, or gaming time--whatever you feel like is just kind of fluff screen time). Then plug in that number of hours into this equation:Daily Screen time X 365 (days in the year) X 50 (years) divided by 5,840 (awake hours a year, if you sleep 8 yours a night) = the amount of years of your life you will spend looking at your phone if you do the same amount for 50. (For people who average 5 hours per day, it is around 15 years total!)Motivation? Found. How Meditation Can Save Your Life With Brooke Snow

Small daily practices often compound into large scale change in our lives. As parents we tell ourselves we "don't have time". Our conversation with Brooke Snow today will challenge that belief. Of all the life changing habits in the world, meditation is right at the top of the list for us at Find the Magic. In this episode, we have an inspiring conversation with author, meditation instructor and advocate Brooke Snow. We also discuss how meditation can help improve all aspects of your life, from your ability to parent with patience, to your ability to handle what life throws at you.Brooke initially discovered the life-saving power of meditation unintentionally while struggling to breathe with blood clots in her lungs in a life-flight helicopter. It wasn’t until later, while living with the PTSD (that can accompany near death experiences) and simultaneously raising her young children, that she truly began to understand what meditation could do.Brooke gives us some wonderful tips on how to incorporate visualization into our practice, as well as how to use the floors and ceilings technique to truly dial in meditation as an easy non-negotiable habit. Systems and Values for Easier Days and Stronger Family Connections (Entitlement Trap by Linda Eyre and Richard Eyre)

Have you ever driven in a city that isn’t well planned? The roads are often too narrow for the amount of traffic, and the flow of streets seem to have no discernible pattern. Navigating in such a place can be tricky and chaotic. In contrast, a city that has planned ahead of time what they want long term often has wide, orderly streets, and the initial time and thought investment pays back tenfold as their city runs much smoother as it grows. In this episode, we talk about using this theory of infrastructure in our own families. It takes some time upfront, but in the long run, it makes our family run sooo much more smoothly and makes parenting easier, while intentionally aligning it with our values. We discuss the systems that we have tried out in our own homes over the years that have proven themselves to be priceless.Books we mentioned:The Entitlement TrapSecrets of a Happy FamilyHold on to Your KidsMiracle MorningLinks We PromisedSerendipity Parenting Episode from Linda an Richard EyreRelated Episodes Discovering Your Life Essentials How To: Create Pockets of PeaceWe would love for you to share our episode with your friends and family. Saving Our Kids & Ourselves from Screens & Social Media with Collin Kartchner

Collin Kartchner is a social activist and champion of giving childhood back to our children. The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits providing the false sense of connection that kids are craving. This can create a vacuum in their minds that may lead to depression and lack of connection to people around them. Although this information at first paints a bleak picture for childhood, we discuss the beautiful antidote that is at all of our fingertips: connection. REAL connection with actual humans in our lives. Collin offers concrete advice about trying out a family screen detox, and gives us lots of inspiring suggestions on how to increase the connection in our own home with the people we love. He will truly inspire you to make a difference in your child’s life (and model freedom from screen dependence yourself! The Art of Acceptance, Self Discovery, and Homeschooling with Erin Loechner

In her book, Chasing Slow, Erin Loechner describes how sometimes, in our search for more, we add things to our lives. We buy more things, add more tasks, take on more. However, often, what we need is actually less. In this episode, she shares with us her insights on living with the lion inside of us, the one who always is whispering to us that we must do more, have more, BE more. What do we do with this voice when we are different phases of life? Some phases require more stillness, and others have space for more goal reaching, and there is beauty in all of these phases. This embracing of each phase of life that Erin embodies led her to search for and then create, along with child development professionals and educators, a beautiful homeschool curriculum called Other Goose. It is built on these three pillars of education: connection through nature, community through stories, creativity through play. It offers flexibility to parents of younger children and is a wonderful resource for any of you out there who are considering homeschooling this year.Erin Loechner has been an online educator, homeschool advocate, and author for over 10 years. Her all-in-one homeschooling plan for the early years, Other Goose, has been used by over 25,000 students worldwide, and includes daily literature, creativity, foundations, outdoors, relationships, language, math, rhythms, logic, and habit lessons for kids ages 2-7.To find out more about Other Goose and take the assessment go here.Chasing Slow is her fabulous book and you can find it here.Other Goose on Instagram: instagram.com/othergooseErin on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/erinloechner/Her blog is https://designformankind.com/Related EpisodesEpisode 44: Making Education AwesomeEpisode 85 Homeschooling and Trusting Your Ability to Teach with Jen Lumanlan We would love for you to share our episode with your friends and family. Why Your Desires Matter and How to Define Them with Heather Chauvin

Sometimes, it takes facing death to really help us realize what we truly want out of living. In this episode, author and entrepreneur Heather Chauvin shares her story of how her experience with stage 4 cancer did just that. We found our conversation with her to be truly liberating in so many ways.Heather debunks the unconscious belief that so many parents have that exhaustion is simply a defining aspect of parenthood. What??? Doesn’t that just give you energy, knowing that you don’t HAVE to be drained all the time? She challenges us to look at our own life, really tap into what we truly desire, and then go after that feeling. Homeschooling and Trusting Your Ability to Teach with Jen Lumanlan

So many of us are facing a big decision this Fall, will we be teaching our kids at home? Or maybe we have no choice at all. So many of us are being thrown into the role as teacher and parent. This week Felica is interviewing Jen Lumanlan of Your Parenting Mojo. Jen Lumanlan holds an M.S. in Psychology (Child Development) and an M.Ed., and hosts the Your Parenting Mojo podcast which is a reference guide for parents of toddlers and preschoolers based on scientific researchers and the principles of respectful parenting. In each episode she examines a topic related to parenting and child development from all sides to help parents understand how to make decisions about raising their children. She lives in California with her husband and daughter. Jen brings us wisdom backed with immense research (her specialty!) on why we should trust our ability to teach, our child’s ability to learn (and lead their own education through their own interests!) and the process of homeschooling. We touch on why we can let go of the perfect curriculum, standardized tests, and we discuss the value of play in education, socialization and explore the concept of pandemic pods. We hope that this wide ranging conversation helps any of you choosing (or maybe without the choice) about your child’s education this Fall feel more confident. If you would like to learn more about Jen you can find her on her website https://yourparentingmojo.com/If you would like to learn more about Jen you can find her here. You can listen to her podcast here. Here is her blog post on socialization in schools and her blog post on schemas is here, and she has some wonderful information on the Pandemic Pods 'in a box' course here. How GOOD Apologies Change Every Relationship (Even the one with ourselves) - based on work by Harriet Lerner

We ALL make mistakes. Every single one of us. Sometimes, even with the best of intentions, we hurt people. Although many of us are over apologizers for unnecessary things, we often become non-apologizers when it comes time to truly say we are sorry. We buffer it with defensiveness or ego, and our attempts at apologies fall flat. Our relationships suffer when this happens. In this episode, we address how over apologizing is unhelpful and give tips on how to avoid it, and then we delve deep into what makes a true apology, and how to get out of the way of our ego enough to truly make amends in our relationships. This topic is so beautiful because it really gives us space in our relationships to admit when we do wrong, listen without defensiveness, and truly heal.Articles and authors that inspired us:Harriet Lerner // Why Won’t You ApologizeMaja Jovanovic // Sorry to bother you, but do you say “sorry” too much? Finding Wisdom in Chaos

In this special episode, we welcome a new host onto our show! Katelin is Taralyn’s sister and Felica’s sister-in-law, and we are so excited for you all to get to know her better. For many of us, this is a time when our current reality does not match our expectation of it. Even without a pandemic, sometimes our career, our relationships, or our health doesn’t line up with what we think it should be. In this episode, we talk about the wisdom from authors that we are personally leaning on during this time, and which books are really helping us the most.We have found comfort in the wisdom that has transcended time from the philosophers of the past such as Socrates and Plato, and modern thought leaders such as Ryan Holiday and Eckhart Tolle. As we talk about these different philosophies, we explore the idea that when we feel like we are losing ourselves because the outer circumstances that we have learned to define ourselves with change or disappear all together, it is actually an opportunity to truly find ourselves. The Power Of Beautiful Words with Taralyn

Hey everyone! It’s Taralyn today. It’s no secret that I LOVE words. I love talking; I love writing; I love reading. I feel so much of who I am and how I think is a result of the ideas and philosophies I have read or heard over the years. Words have the power to change the world! I have found that memorizing beautiful words from the masters who have come before me to be a powerful way to have those ideas at my fingertips when the need arises. I have also been pleasantly surprised at how fun it has been to introduce my kids to poetry and great literature and how easy it is to have them memorize these words. In this episode, I talk about different categories of words that my kids and I memorize: historical documents, poetry, inspiring leader quotes, and scripture. I explain the benefits of such a practice, and give you lots of easy tips and tricks to have you easily incorporate some literature love into your parenting.Links:My favorite quote book: Great Quotes from Great Leaders // compiled by Peggy AndersonRainer RilkeWilliam BlakeWilliam WordsworthNorton Poetry Anthology ( more of an investment, but has great info)Karl, Get Out of the Garden!: Carolus Linnaeus and the Naming of Everything // Anita SanchezGreat kids’ literature lists: https://goodandbeautifulbooklist.com and http://litkidz.comHistorical documents: archives.govOur Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s. HOW TO Express Your Needs and Solve Problems with Nonviolent Communication

Communication is always an important space, and now more than ever, we are loving the communication philosophy developed by Marshall Rosenberg called Non-Violent Communication (NVC). The ground breaking assumption of NVC is that ALL human beings have the ability to connect with each other and have needs, and that our needs don’t conflict, but it is simply our strategies for meeting those needs that create problems. These conflicting strategies are what lead to violence or causing harm to each other. This is deep, powerful philosophy that can change the way each of us interact. Whether you are talking to your children, your spouse, your neighbor, your boss or those across cultural lines using appropriate and clean communication tactics will open doors and hearts. The steps to nonviolent communication involve observing, describing emotion, identifying needs, making specific requests, and clarifying understanding. If there ever was a time for this clarification, it is now. We hope you find it helpful in all important relationships in your lives. We recorded this episode before the history-making events of the last week surrounding civil rights here in the United States, so although we don’t apply the principles directly to this subject, we look forward to hearing how you apply the concepts in whatever you are currently facing. The Book That Inspired Us:Nonviolent Communication // Marshall B. To Raise Strong Children We Need to Be Strong Parents

For many parents, it can be difficult to respectfully parent while still holding strong boundaries. However, sometimes, as we try to avoid being an authoritarian tyrant, we go too far the other way and become permissive lambs without boundaries and our children are left with too much power, which in turn makes them feel unanchored and insecure. In the last few decades, our society has witnessed an upswing in number of children who are, diagnosed or not, dealing with many behavior difficulties. Joe Newman, author of Raising Lions, has spent his career helping these children. He has found a pattern that has helped countless parents and teachers find that balance between being an authoritarian parent and an overly permissive parent. While his book is geared towards dealing with children with mild to severe behavior problems, we have found his tools to be unbelievably helpful as parents to all children. The book that inspired us:Raising Lions: The Art of Compassionate Discipline // Joe NewmanOur Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s. Feeling Burned Out? How We Can Use Healthy Treats to Take Care of Ourselves

Does anyone else out there find yourself reaching for an entire box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (insert your kryptonite here) when you are feeling the big feelings that most of us are experiencing on a daily basis? During times of high emotions, boredom, and overwhelm, we have found ourselves grasping for something to hold on to. In this time, we have found that Gretchin Rubin’s strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves has been truly a life saver. Most of us love the idea of good habits in our lives. In her book, Better Than Before, Rubin describes a strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves, which actually increases our ability of keep good habits in our lives. When we deprive ourselves of things that we look forward to and bring us pleasure, we can end up feeling depleted and burned out. This often leads us to abandon our good habit pursuits and can lead us to un-healthy treats or numbing (which can bring us pleasure momentarily, but often derail our long term goals and habits).Healthy treats are so wonderful because they are things that both make you feel good in the moment, and feel good after you are finished with them. On the other hand, unhealthy treats are enjoyable in the moment you indulge in them, but often make us feel worse later (think eating an entire chocolate cake to escape feeling a negative emotion, skipping your workout to mindlessly scroll YouTube, over drinking, or any addictive behavior that you feel sabotages your wellbeing). In this episode, we discuss how to really use the strategy of healthy treats as a fun way to give more to yourself, which in turn allows you to actually stick with your goals and habits. We give our lists of healthy treats so that hopefully you leave the episode with a long list of your own healthy treats you can lean on throughout the day to help you feel both taken care of and motivated. The book that inspired us:The Happiness Project // Gretchin RubinBetter Than Before // Gretchin Rubin (in this book, she really expands the idea of healthy treats)Our Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s. The Martyr Effect. HOW TO Stop Offering Ourselves at the Altar of Parenting

This is a time of self reflection, a slow down presented to us by COVID-19. It isn’t ideal; however, ultimately, it has the potential to lead to a new level of self awareness. Finding your true self and acknowledging who you are fully can be scary and can challenge some of the long engrained thought patterns we all have. GUILT if we want more than caring for children at home. LONGING for something outside of our “good life” when we should be content with that good.Do you find yourself offering yourself at the alter of parenting? Were you shown examples of martyrdom that were praised as being a “good mother or father?” Conversations we have heard have inspired us to explore this joust between care of others and care of ourself. How can we find the dance that will inspire our own happiness and acknowledge the happiness that caring for others brings? How can we respect those we love while holding a space of respect for ourselves? We have broken down four concrete steps that help us recognize, layout, and act on the inspiration to do more burning inside us while opening our awareness to our needs and the needs of those around us.The main Conversation that inspired us:Glennon Doyle and Brene Brown on Untamed: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/glennon-doyle-and-bren%C3%A9-on-untamed/id1494350511?i=1000469313957Our Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s. Finding Compassion in the Current Chaos

Wow world! As we live this beautiful life alongside the current events of our world (you know, like the pandemic we have happening), we have a really wonderful opportunity to deepen our compassion practice to help make the world, and inside our own hearts, a better place. We discovered the power of a practice called Tonglen from Pema Chödrön’s book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times, and we have LOVED incorporating it into our lives! It is a practice that helps you process negative emotion (anyone feeling any of those right now?:) in an amazingly loving way.In this episode, we walk you through the practice, and share how we have found it helpful in our own lives. When it is often so challenging to melt together compassion and kindness that we feel personally into the anxiety of every day. When You Feel Like You’re Failing

Sometimes in life, but especially in parenting, we just feel like we don’t measure up—at all. We can end up feeling like we are failing at one of the most important things we have ever done, and it is disheartening, to say the least. This episode is for all you parents out there who, at the end of some days, have worried that you aren’t enough as you wrap yourselves in blankets of worry and overwhelm. In a world full of beautiful and helpful (and also some not so great) advice, with countless books on every subject, it is possible to sometimes have our efforts to become better parents simply feel too hard, too much.In this episode, we use one of our listener’s example of having a toddler not behaving (hitting, in this case) to explore the path that leads to parent shame, and how we can turn away from that path and find inspiration and peace instead.Books that inspired us:Gifts of Imperfect Parenting // Brené BrownPower of Showing Up // Daniel J. Guidance for the Changing Seasons of Motherhood

Many of us often hear the well meant advice to “enjoy every single second because it all goes by so fast!” Although there is so much wisdom in this advice, sometimes it makes us feel guilty when we are in moments that seem at best a drudgery and others that are downright miserable. This episode we hear a listener question about what do when our dreams seem to be deferred while we are in certain seasons of life. Parenting young children is a season that seems to be fraught with many of these dilemmas and questions. In this episode, we address these questions and talk about how to incubate and still develop our dreams WHILE we slow down in the caring for young children. Also, we talk about how to feel the moments of pain, allowing them to flow through us so we are also able to fully embrace the moments of rapture and fulfillment that also come. Both sides of this emotional spectrum are part of every season of life, and there is a courageous beauty to staying open to all that life brings. Our Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s. Parenting Boys Part 2

In part two of our discussion about raising boys, we review the four pillars of connection, getting outside, sleep, and nutrition, and we tackle the challenges and opportunities that boys face at school and learning. We also address the research on screen time and boys’ brains, and give you all sorts of tips to make screen time a pleasant activity with boundaries instead of an unlimited source of distraction and dependency. We have such an AMAZING opportunity as parents to really create a community where they can thrive with their own natural strengths, and we can help create a world where boys are taught to have emotional intelligence and access their internal world with confidence and love. Thanks for joining us for this conversation!Books that inspired us:Calmer, Easier, Happier Boys // Noel Janis-NortonBoys Adrift // Leonard SaxWild Things // Stephen James and David ThomasLink to resources we mentioned:Wim Hof Method: https://www.wimhofmethod.comTim Ferris’s interview with Wim Hof: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tim-ferriss-show/id863897795?i=1000351593298Our Website (You can find all show notes here, along with book recommendations and links to all past books):https://www.findthemagic.coFind us on instagram:Felica: https://www.instagram.com/felicaallen/Taralyn: https://www.instagram.com/taralyngriffin/p.s.
