Normally after a loss, The Scho Show shifts into sadness mode. The episodes are titled "Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness" episodes, we play sad music, and Mark Schofield gets in his feelings for about thirty minutes or so. This is not a sad episode. Because what we saw tonight was a football team that was fun to watch, was figuring out its identity over the course of sixty minutes in the Pacific Northwest, and had one final shot at a win in a game that seemed out of reach. A final shot at a win in a game where they had gotten down by two scores on two different occasions, only to fight back. Are there concerns? Yes. Is this team perfect? No. Are the concerns fixable? The New England Patriots moved to 1-0 in Cam Newton's first game in a Patriots uniform. Newton was efficient and effective, despite an obvious lack of production from his receivers- and it was up to the ground game to move the offense down the field. On the other side of the ball, the defense picked up where they left off last season with another excellent performance, despite an array of new faces in key roles. The Scho Show is back with a first crack at predicting the final New England Patriots' 53-man roster. There are difficult decisions facing this coaching staff on both sides of the football and at many positions groups, and Mark Schofield does his best to try and sort those out. On offense, while the question of starting quarterback might be settled, how many players they keep each position around Cam Newton - including within the QB room - is unsettled. Tough decisions exist at running back, wide receiver and along the offensive line. Defensively, the strength remains in the secondary, where Bill Belichick likely keeps as many cornerbacks and safeties as he can. College football conferences are canceling their football seasons, which will have lasting implications for the NFL. How will teams know which players deserve to be first round picks if they haven't played for a year? What if the college season takes place in the spring, alongside the draft? Linebacker Dont'a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung will not be the defensive linchpins we have come to expect for nearly the past decade. Mark Schofield is back on the microphone with an Emergency Edition of The Scho Show. Under the agreement reached between the NFL and the NFLPA regarding a return to the field, NFL players have until August 3rd to choose to opt out of the season ahead. Some big names have already taken that option, including a number of New England Patriots. Dont'a Hightower, the stalwart linebacker, is the biggest name so far.
