The Scho Show Episode 141: Looking at Denver
The New England Patriots, as of this moment, are scheduled to play the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon. Questions are swirling around this game, given positive COVID-19 tests for both Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore in the past week, but provided this game goes forward, what can we expect from the Broncos? When they have the football, there are questions still, specifically who will be taking the snaps for Denver. Early signs indicate that Brett Rypien will get the snaps, so what can the Patriots do against him? We start with lessons from last Thursday night. Then, when the Patriots have the football, who is worrisome on the Denver defense? We look at safety Justin Simmons. Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 203: Patriots lose a tough game against the Chiefs, NFL, Refs, and Brian Hoyer
The New England Patriots did not have their starting quarterback due to COVID. They had to play on the same day they traveled, thanks to the NFL. They had a touchdown taken off the board thanks to a terrible and early whistle by an official. And still they managed to battle late into the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, despite an ugly outing by back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer. The defense had one of their best outings of the Bill Belichick era, holding a potent Chiefs offense to just 19 points. And if the officials allowed Patrick Mahomes' sack in the second quarter to play out as an interception, and Shilique Calhoun's touchdown stood; and if Brian Hoyer hadn't taken a sack before the half, or hadn't fumbled the football on the 10-yard line in the third quarter; and if the officials didn't call 33 yards of ticky-tacky penalties in favor of the Chiefs on a crucial fourth quarter drive, including a defensive pass interference call on third down; then maybe the Patriots would have held a 23-6 lead halfway through the fourth quarter. But, alas, those are all ifs and the Patriots offense wasted an outstanding effort by Chase Winovich, Stephon Gilmore, and the whole New England defense. And yet we feel hopeful! The Patriots have two competitive road losses to two of the best teams in the NFL. They've shown they can run the ball and pass the ball successfully, and that the defense can shut down the best offense in the league. Week 4 of the season is now in the books, which means that the Patriots have completed their preseason. The question is whether all the pieces can come together for the rest of the year. Postgame Show: Week 4
Pat breaks down a tough loss to the Chiefs on Monday night. Mental mistakes by the defense, Hoyer, and the referees made this one hurt quite a bit. The Scho Show Episode 140: A Melancholy Monday Night
Well, what could have been, what perhaps should have been, was not. Teams playing the Kansas City Chiefs have a slim margin for error. Tonight the New England Patriots saw that first-hand. Despite holding them to six first-half points, and despite having two different red zone drives with a chance to take the lead, the Patriots trek home with a loss and wonder what could have been. In a bit of a rambling stream of consciousness, Mark Schofield tries to put it into words. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show 139: What now?
Well, it happened. On the cusp of a huge game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots learned Saturday that quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. That raises a slew of questions: What happens now? Does the game go forward? If so, who is under center, Brian Hoyer or Jarrett Stidham? Given that it is likely Hoyer, how does the offense operate? And given that the offense is going to be different, what impact does that have on the defense in trying to stop this Chiefs offense? We dive into those issues and more. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 202: How can the Patriots hang with the Chiefs?
The New England Patriots have a tall task when they face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the most talented players in the league and he's going to produce points- so how can the Patriots keep it close? Can Cam Newton and the offense score enough to stick with the Chiefs high-flying attack? Or will Bill Belichick and the defense borrow a game plan from a different era- say, his time with the Giants or from facing Peyton Manning- to keep the ball out of Mahomes' hands? Cam Newton wasn't perfect, but the New England Patriots did enough to dominate a once-undefeated Las Vegas Raiders team. How did the Patriots do it? Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead had big days, while the defense found a way to eliminate an elite tight end in Darren Waller. Easy peasy. But who deserves the game ball? It is time for our first ode of 2020! That's right we cue up the Skyrim music, we stream into the mead halls, and we raise our mugs in honor, as we toast the Patriots' offensive line and their performance Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. On both power and zone designs, the linemen were doing work across the front against the Raiders, and in the first half of this show we dive into what they did to spring Rex Burkhead and Sony Michel. Then, we look ahead, to what Week 4 has to offer. Yes, we get Brett Rypien, so that's good. But we also get Patrick Mahomes on Sunday and this high-powered Kansas City Chiefs offense. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 200: How the Patriots can beat the Raiders
The New England Patriots are hoping to build off two strong weeks to start the 2020 season as they host a surprising strong Las Vegas Raiders team. The Raiders currently rank #1 in the league in points per drive as they're efficient at putting points on the board. So how should Bill Belichick, Steve Belichick, and the New England defense match up against this Raiders attack? And on the other side of the ball...uhhh...who do the Raiders have on the other side of the ball? Can Cam Newton build upon his success on the ground over the first two weeks, as well as his passing success from the Seahawks game? Will N'Keal Harry continue to grow as a target? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 199: Patriots fall to Seahawks, but Cam Newton looks amazing
It's rare that a New England Patriots loss leaves fans with a positive feeling, but losing a close game to the Seattle Seahawks where Julian Edelman, N'Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, and Cam Newton all had career days should have Patriots fans hopeful about the future. One week after a run-heavy offense gashed the Miami Dolphins, Newton and the passing attack showed an ability to attack a well-coached secondary- and if the offense can win by ground or by air, opposing teams will struggle to defend the Patriots. On the other side of the ball, the Patriots have to just tip their caps at the Seahawks receivers who scored three of their five touchdowns on preposterous plays. Nine times out of ten those plays wouldn't have resulted in touchdowns, and yet all three happened in the same game. That's just bad luck, and the defense should get back on track. Run fits, zone coverage rules, and pressuring the passer. If you're into that sort of thing. In the second half of the show, we look ahead to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Scho Show Episode 135: Looking at the bright side
Normally after a loss, The Scho Show shifts into sadness mode. The episodes are titled "Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness" episodes, we play sad music, and Mark Schofield gets in his feelings for about thirty minutes or so. This is not a sad episode. Because what we saw tonight was a football team that was fun to watch, was figuring out its identity over the course of sixty minutes in the Pacific Northwest, and had one final shot at a win in a game that seemed out of reach. A final shot at a win in a game where they had gotten down by two scores on two different occasions, only to fight back. Are there concerns? Yes. Is this team perfect? No. Are the concerns fixable? Maybe? But this was fun to watch. So we are looking at the bright side tonight. Learn more about your ad choices. Then, it's to the tape, or...the broadcast...or whatever. We dive into Kyle Dugger and how the Patriots used him in his first NFL game. Reviews? Mixed in a sense. Better still was what we saw from second-year player Joejuan Williams. New England has needed a tight end eraser for years...perhaps they finally have one. Then in the second half of the show, we're on to Seattle. We know about Russell Wilson. The New England Patriots moved to 1-0 in Cam Newton's first game in a Patriots uniform. The Scho Show Episode 129: Roster Projections 1.0
The Scho Show is back with a first crack at predicting the final New England Patriots' 53-man roster. There are difficult decisions facing this coaching staff on both sides of the football and at many positions groups, and Mark Schofield does his best to try and sort those out. On offense, while the question of starting quarterback might be settled, how many players they keep each position around Cam Newton - including within the QB room - is unsettled. Tough decisions exist at running back, wide receiver and along the offensive line. Defensively, the strength remains in the secondary, where Bill Belichick likely keeps as many cornerbacks and safeties as he can. EDGE/OLB might be a quiet position of strength, at least in the numbers. Then yes, there is a kicker decision to make. Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 195: Which players are winning the starting jobs two weeks into Patriots camp?
The New England Patriots entered training camp with a ton of question marks. On offense, the only certainty was with wide receiver Julian Edelman, running back James White, and offensive linemen Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, and Shaq Mason (even David Andrews was a question mark). On defense, the entire front seven was re-shuffled due to departures in free agency and linebacker Dont'a Hightower opting out for the season. So where do the Patriots stand two weeks into camp? Who is winning the quarterback battle? Who are the big surprises on offense and on defense? And what should we be looking out for over the final two weeks? Learn more about your ad choices. It's a new week here at Pats Pulpit and we've got padded practices on the horizon. In Episode 126 of The Scho Show Mark Schofield highlights what to watch for - and what to ignore - when the pads come on. Among the things to look for? Timing, the health of the players and the usage tidbits on some notable names such as Kyle Dugger and James White. In the second half of the show we go "Under the Hoodie" and get back into the mind of Bill Belichick. Then, in perhaps a violation of voting conduct, Mark is ready to cast his first PFWA ballot for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year, before the voting has even opened.
