College football conferences are canceling their football seasons, which will have lasting implications for the NFL. How will teams know which players deserve to be first round picks if they haven't played for a year? What if the college season takes place in the spring, alongside the draft? The New England Patriots are open for camp and a lot of familiar faces have opted out of the 2020 season. Linebacker Dont'a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung will not be the defensive linchpins we have come to expect for nearly the past decade. Presumptive offensive starters right tackle Marcus Cannon and tight end Matt LaCosse will also not be playing, nor will projected role players running back Brandon Bolden and fullback Dan Vitale. Bubble players wide receiver Marqise Lee and offensive lineman Najee Toran have also opted out, bringing the number of players not suiting up to a league-high eight. Mark Schofield is back on the microphone with an Emergency Edition of The Scho Show. Under the agreement reached between the NFL and the NFLPA regarding a return to the field, NFL players have until August 3rd to choose to opt out of the season ahead. Some big names have already taken that option, including a number of New England Patriots. Dont'a Hightower, the stalwart linebacker, is the biggest name so far. Having recapped the draft class it is time to turn to the undrafted free agents. The New England Patriots have generally been a model franchise when it comes to finding talent in the undrafted ranks, and last year was not an exception to this rule. A year ago three such players made the roster: WR Gunner Olszewski, WR Jakobi Meyers, and TE Jakob Johnson. That kept alive a streak dating back to 2004.
