The Scho Show 165: Playoffs, QB landing spots and more

We are back for a Wednesday afternoon edition of The Scho Show. In this installment we talk playoffs, looking ahead to this weekend's games. We start on the AFC side, highlighting what the teams have to do to come out victorious. The Bills need to deny free access and stop the run, while the Ravens might need to cloud the picture for Josh Allen. Cleveland needs to be perfect - or darn close to it - while the Chiefs need to do what they might do best: Push the ball downfield. On the NFC side, the games might be determined when these units are on the field: Green Bay's offense versus Los Angeles's defense, and Tampa Bay's offense versus Dennis Allen and the Saints defense. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 226: And so end the 2020 Patriots season!

The 2020 New England Patriots were at the same time unimpressive, exciting, intriguing, and boring. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 225: Patriots season thankfully ends against the Jets

They weren't particularly bad, but this 2020 New England Patriots team will certainly be forgettable as they prepare to finish their season against the 2-13 New York Jets with absolutely nothing on the line, except for pride- and the Jets may have the edge in that department. This Patriots team can't stop the run and they can't score on offense, which is a recipe for disaster as New England's strengths of running the ball and defending the pass become completely irrelevant in a competitive game, or one where the Patriots are trailing. So what do Patriots fans have to look forward to, apart from the 3rd-most cap space in the entire NFL and a bright future? Well, how about getting a chance to either beat the Jets and save some face, or potentially wind up with a top 10 pick? Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 161: Really what does it matter?

Not the best selling job with that episode title, but hey, we work with what we've got. It was a bad night on Monday. As someone who adores "Love Actually," ESPN's ridiculous Brady/Belichick graphic stealing a scene from that movie was horrific to see. And yet, it still was not the worst thing we saw Monday night. Whether it was the woefully dismal dumpster fire of suck that is the current Patriots passing game, a defense surrendering ten yards a pop on smoke screens, or surrender punts early in the second half, it was all bad and I needed to vent for a bit. In the second half of the show, I dive into a huge question simmering under the surface about the future. Not the "who" or the "what" of the quarterback position, but the "how." The Scho Show Episode 159: A game, the future, and quarterback evaluation thoughts

The New England Patriots' slim playoff chances were dashed on Sunday with a loss to the Miami Dolphins. On yet another NFL afternoon, the offense failed to show any sort of punch, and that amounted to a season-crippling defeat down in South Beach. In the first half of this show we look at how this loss came about on both a micro- and a macro-level. The offense is the focus of discussion, as expected, but the defense is not let off the hook. Then in the second half of the show the book is closed on 2020, as the roster evaluation process for 2021 has to begin in earnest, starting now. Of course, that starts with the quarterback position. The Scho Show Episode 158: The New England Patriots in Prose

In 1843 Charles Dickens had two things going on in his life. The first was debt. Crushing debt in part. His financial troubles were the talk of London society. But he also had an idea. An idea of a ghost story, based loosely on “The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton.” In that tale a grave digger had nothing else to do on Christmas Eve but dig a grave and indulge in a bottle of hard spirits. Bent on reforming the old man, a band of goblins appeared to him to view panoramas of Christmas live being celebrated by those around him. The grave digger converted upon the morning to a sober life. That idea, of course, was for what would be called A Christmas Carol in Prose. Longtime listeners to this show know of my affinity for Dickens, and A Christmas Carol. So it is in that spirit that I present The New England Patriots in Prose. We will discuss the ghosts of Patriots past, the ghosts of Patriots present and yes, the ghosts of Patriots yet to come. The Scho Show 155: Chargers Week

Well friends, now it is time to look at the Los Angeles Chargers. After a quick Carson Wentz detour first. For the brand and all... But then we get into the Chargers, starting with another young quarterback, Justin Herbert. It gives us a chance to revisit his draft evaluation, highlight how the Chargers have catered to what he does best as a quarterback, and then dive into a particular area of growth: Pocket presence. It was not a strength of his coming out of Oregon, but as the numbers and film illustrate, he has taken a huge leap forward. In the second half of the show, it's time for some good news/bad news with maybe some extra bad news. The Chargers run a ton of Cover 3 in the secondary, which is usually good! Most of the big plays they have given up this year in the passing game have come when they've run Cover 3. Also usually good! Unfortunately because of where the Patriots are as an offense, most of their - limited - success in the passing game has come against different coverages. We explain and try to find a silver lining. The New England Patriots managed to defeat the Arizona Cardinals thanks to some stellar defense that limited phenom quarterback Kyler Murray and stud receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and thanks to some incredible special teams play from Donte Moncrief, Gunner Olszewski, Jake Bailey, and Nick Folk. No thanks to an offense that was led by Cam Newton in one of his worst performances as a member of the Patriots, and one that relied almost entirely on Damien Harris, Jakobi Meyers, and James White. The Scho Show Episode 154: A Glorious Victory Edition

It was not pretty. It was certainly ugly at times. But the New England Patriots improved to 5-6 on the 2020 season with a 20-17 victory "at the death," as our friends across the pond like to say. In this Glorious Victory Edition of The Scho Show, we start with the big picture issues: Cam Newton, the defense, the season as a whole, and of course, the fact that watching this team is fun this year. Why? Because it is new, it is different and yes, the results are not what Patriots fans are accustomed to, but we are seeing growth before our eyes. Even if it is ugly at times. In the second half of the show, we dive deeper into the game, breaking down plays that worked, and those that did not. Plus, game balls and the "Takes of the Game" from the Scho Show Slack Channel. Reach out for an invitation for the stretch run and of course, draft season! Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 215: Patriots let season slip through their fingers

There goes the New England Patriots 2020 season. A weak performance against the Houston Texans sank whatever chance the Patriots had for reaching the postseason and now their focus is on avoiding- or chasing- a top 10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. This Patriots team couldn't beat a bad Broncos team or a bad Texans team, despite having the opportunity to score in the final minute of both games. They couldn't beat a good Seahawks team or a good Bills team, despite also having an opportunity to score in the final minute of each game. This is a Patriots team that can't pull out the plays when they need them most. So who gets the blame? Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels? The lack of a defensive front? The lack of offensive playmakers? Or is this simply the register for the Patriots' unprecedented two decades of dominance that benefit from, yes, some luck along the way? The Scho Show Episode 152: What Could Have Been

What could have been. What should have been. Was not. Those words have haunted me for decades, as you'll see at the start of this show. They haunt me again today, in the wake of the New England Patriots dropping a game to the previously 2-7 Houston Texans on Sunday. Deshaun Watson was masterful. The Patriots - and their defense - were not. We'll talk about that, the missed opportunities, what could have been a drive for the ages from Josh McDaniels and more, in this installment of The Scho Show. Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 214: Patriots look to reach .500 against the Texans

The New England Patriots are coming off a huge win against the Baltimore Ravens and are looking to get another win against a surprisingly bad Houston Texans team. The Texans have a great young quarterback, some great young receivers, and some great young defenders, and yet they've only recorded a pair of wins against a terrible Jacksonville Jaguars team. So. What's wrong with the Texans and their last-ranked run defense, and can the Patriots take advantage of that favorable match-up? Learn more about your ad choices.
