Not the best selling job with that episode title, but hey, we work with what we've got. It was a bad night on Monday. As someone who adores "Love Actually," ESPN's ridiculous Brady/Belichick graphic stealing a scene from that movie was horrific to see. And yet, it still was not the worst thing we saw Monday night. Whether it was the woefully dismal dumpster fire of suck that is the current Patriots passing game, a defense surrendering ten yards a pop on smoke screens, or surrender punts early in the second half, it was all bad and I needed to vent for a bit. The New England Patriots' slim playoff chances were dashed on Sunday with a loss to the Miami Dolphins. On yet another NFL afternoon, the offense failed to show any sort of punch, and that amounted to a season-crippling defeat down in South Beach. In 1843 Charles Dickens had two things going on in his life. The first was debt. Crushing debt in part. His financial troubles were the talk of London society. But he also had an idea. An idea of a ghost story, based loosely on “The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton.” In that tale a grave digger had nothing else to do on Christmas Eve but dig a grave and indulge in a bottle of hard spirits. Bent on reforming the old man, a band of goblins appeared to him to view panoramas of Christmas live being celebrated by those around him. The grave digger converted upon the morning to a sober life. That idea, of course, was for what would be called A Christmas Carol in Prose. Longtime listeners to this show know of my affinity for Dickens, and A Christmas Carol. Well friends, now it is time to look at the Los Angeles Chargers. After a quick Carson Wentz detour first. For the brand and all... But then we get into the Chargers, starting with another young quarterback, Justin Herbert. It gives us a chance to revisit his draft evaluation, highlight how the Chargers have catered to what he does best as a quarterback, and then dive into a particular area of growth: Pocket presence. It was not a strength of his coming out of Oregon, but as the numbers and film illustrate, he has taken a huge leap forward. In the second half of the show, it's time for some good news/bad news with maybe some extra bad news. The Chargers run a ton of Cover 3 in the secondary, which is usually good! Most of the big plays they have given up this year in the passing game have come when they've run Cover 3. Also usually good! Unfortunately because of where the Patriots are as an offense, most of their - limited - success in the passing game has come against different coverages. We explain and try to find a silver lining. There goes the New England Patriots 2020 season. A weak performance against the Houston Texans sank whatever chance the Patriots had for reaching the postseason and now their focus is on avoiding- or chasing- a top 10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. This Patriots team couldn't beat a bad Broncos team or a bad Texans team, despite having the opportunity to score in the final minute of both games. They couldn't beat a good Seahawks team or a good Bills team, despite also having an opportunity to score in the final minute of each game. This is a Patriots team that can't pull out the plays when they need them most. So who gets the blame? Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels? The lack of a defensive front? The lack of offensive playmakers? Or is this simply the register for the Patriots' unprecedented two decades of dominance that benefit from, yes, some luck along the way?
