The New England Patriots entered the 2021 NFL Draft in need of a quarterback of the future and with a goal of improving their defensive front seven after a disastrous 2020 season defending the run. So Alabama QB Mac Jones, the most efficient quarterback in college football history, fell into their laps at 15th overall. And Alabama DL Christian Barmore slipped into the second round at 38th overall. And Oklahoma ED Ronnie Perkins, one of the truly elite edge defenders in the draft, was available at 96th overall. The first wave of free agency is over and the New England Patriots are in great position heading into the NFL draft. While there are definitely areas on the roster than can improve, the Patriots have no obvious holes- which gives them plenty of flexibility with how they can approach the first round of the draft. Safety Patrick Chung retired- one of the great Patriots of the 2010s- but New England is in good hands with Adrian Phillips, Kyle Dugger, and now Jalen Mills. As for the rest of the roster, the Patriots could add some depth on the defensive line (Lawrence Guy?), in the running back room (James White?), and at wide receiver. How many times have Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots brought in a new player in free agency and handed them a top-dollar contract? Stephon Gilmore, Adalius Thomas, Rosevelt Colvin, technically Darrelle Revis, and that's about it. Well, now the Patriots have made splashes by bringing in the top two tight ends on the market in Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith and made them tied for the 3rd highest paid at their position in the entire league. And then Belichick brought in a pair of receivers in Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne. And then handed the bag to pass rusher Matt Judon. And then gave a ton of money to defensive back Jalen Mills. AND THEN bolstered the defensive line with Davon Godshaux and Henry Anderson. Oh, and then they retained Justin Bethel and Cam Newton and Carl Davis and Deatrich Wise, and traded for Trent Brown.
