The Scho Show 151: Baltimore and Houston
Given the win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, it is worth taking a few moments to look back at the New England offense against the Ravens. We start with a discussion of their crack toss design and some variations, and then analyze some of what Jakobi Meyers did as a receiver against the Baltimore secondary. But we cannot look back for too long, as the Patriots have another game to get ready for. In the second half of this show we look at Deshaun Watson and what makes him dangerous in the passing game, as well as how the New England offense should fare against the Houston defense. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 213: The Patriots upset the Ravens in a monsoon!
As literally six people in the entire world predicted, the New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football, thanks to some impressive play by running back Damien Harris, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, and the entire New England defense that managed to bottle up Lamar Jackson as much as reasonably could be expected. But was this a fluke? The Patriots were taken to the wire against the horrible New York Jets team just last week- so how much can we trust this Patriots team to keep up their level of play as they head down a tough final stretch of the season? The Scho Show Episode 150: A Glorious Victory Edition
It did not feel right last week, to call the post-game show after the victory over the New York Jets a "Glorious Victory Edition." Things are different this week. It also feels funny sometimes when we end the show with the tagline "...and bless those Patriots rains/reigns down in Foxborough." Things are different this week. They are different because the New England Patriots knocked off Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens by a final score of 23-17, breathing new life into a season that seemed to be going nowhere just a few weeks ago. Left for dead by many - this show's host included - the Patriots might just be clawing themselves back into the playoff picture. We recap a wet night, talk about the great, the good and the bad, hand out some game balls and outline the "Take of the Game" from The Scho Show Slack Channel in this 150th installment of The Scho Show. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 212: Patriots will have hands full versus Ravens, Lamar Jackson
They boast the league's #1 ranked defense and also feature a top 10 offense. They have the reigning MVP, a great tight end, and a cast of great defenders that can all rise to the occasion to make the play. This could have described the New England Patriots of just a couple years ago, but instead we're talking about the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson. The Ravens lead the league in rushing yards and the Patriots rushing defense ranks, ugh, 31st by DVOA. So do the Patriots have any chance of slowing the Baltimore attack while they're on defense? Alec and Rich agree on the Patriots defensive X Factor, too. And then there's the question of how Cam Newton and the New England offense will be able to move the ball against a defense that doesn't really have a weak point. They have great cornerbacks. They have great run defenders. They have a great scheme. Can Cam go Superman and win it all? Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show 149: Baltimore Week
If the New England Patriots are going to improve to 4-5 on the season, they'll need to knock off the visiting Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football. The Patriots are seven-point home underdogs for the first time in a long time, so the task does seem difficult. Job one might be stopping Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense. So that is the focus of the show. In the first half of this episode we look at the Ravens offense, highlight how their inconsistency this season, and illustrate how one team managed to get them off rhythm. In the second half of the show, we look at what the Patriots have done in recent weeks to try and uncover a bit of a defensive identity, and also look at what they tried back in 2019 against this offense. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 211: Patriots defeat hapless Jets with last-second field goal
The New England Patriots needed a last-second 51-yard field goal to defeat the winless New York Jets on Monday Night Football. Jets quarterback Joe Flacco had a typical superlative performance against the Patriots, despite being terrible against all other teams, and New England trailed by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. And yet Cam Newton and the Jakobi Meyers-led passing attack mounted an impressive comeback and New England managed to win. The Scho Show Episode 148: A Win! An Actual Win!
It wasn't pretty. In fact it was at times ugly, but the New England Patriots managed to come away with a 30-27 victory over the winless New York Jets on Monday Night Football. This game is perhaps best viewed as a redemption story. Or a pair of redemption stories. First from a defensive back who looked to be the goat when the night was through, but delivered the game's only turnover. And then, a quarterback. Maligned in recent weeks for his struggles and the offensive woes, and a quarterback who had the game last week in his hands...until he did not. He also had a chance to rewrite some tales tonight, and this time he came through. We'll look at those stories and more, plus game balls and the Take of the Game from The Scho Show Slack Channel. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 210: Patriots look for redemption on Monday night against the Jets
The New England Patriots get to play a horrendous New York Jets team in prime time as they're set to square off on Monday Night Football. The Patriots, losers of four straight, and the Jets, losers of every game this year, are riding the third-longest and longest losing streaks in the league. That ends on Monday (barring a tie, which would be a darkly comedic way for the game to end). So who do the Patriots want to stop on the Jets offense? No, really, honestly, who is on the Jets offense? Can anyone help us? We remember Braxton Berrios from his time on the Patriots during camp and during the preseason- you honestly want us to believe that he's the Jets #1 receiver? Stop it, I don't believe you! Well, the Patriots offense appears to be marginally better, so how can Cam Newton and company find a way to win on Monday Night? Listen to find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 209: Patriots lose to Bills in heartbreaking fashion
The New England Patriots looked like they were going to beat the Buffalo Bills and save their season, but in the last minutes of the game, Cam Newton fumbled the football in the red zone. If that doesn't sum up the 2020 Patriots, I don't know what does. There were some bright spots. The secondary stifled a great passing attack, and Damien Harris and Jakobi Meyers proved that the Patriots have talent on offense beyond the offensive line. But there's still a lot of work that needs to be done before this team can compete. The defensive front seven was gashed on the ground as the Bills ran the ball at will- and yet Chase Winovich remained relegated to the bench. While that is most likely linked to the game plan, it's obvious that the game plan hasn't been working- perhaps the game plan should be tailored to get the Patriots best defensive front player on the field! And on offense, Cam flashed his upside, but was inconsistent as the Patriots are scraping the bottom of the barrel at receiver. The tight ends were unavailable and the receivers that suit up are basically the only ones not hurt. So what's next? Listen to find out! Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 147: This is the end?
One week to save the season. That is how many viewed Sunday's game between the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. New England had one week to save their season. It was in their grasp. Quarterback Cam Newton had the football and the Patriots were deep into Buffalo territory, already in range for kicker Nick Folk to tie the game, and within reach of a game-winning touchdown to turn the season around. And then, it was gone. The ball was punched out of Newton's grasp, the Bills recovered, and the Patriots are left to wonder where to go from here. And if this was the end. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 208: How the Patriots can win a must-win game against the Bills
The Patriots haven't faced a must-win game this early in the season since 2000, but here we are. A win against the Buffalo Bills moves New England to 3-4, and pulls them closer to the top of what would be a wide-open AFC East; nearly 20% of teams that start the season 3-4 make the playoffs. On the other hand, a loss sinks the Patriots to a 2-5 record, with the Bills pulling away atop the division and a Miami Dolphins team in the middle; only 3% of 2-5 teams ever reach the playoffs. So the Patriots need to win, or else their season is effectively over. The Patriots will be without their best wide receiver and best cornerback and their quarterback is in shambles and their offensive line is dealing with injuries and their defensive front seven is full of question marks. But, hey, not everything is bad! The Bills barely beat the hapless New York Jets last week, so anything is possible! Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 146: The Passing Game and Josh Allen
The concerns over the passing game are merited. But is their a quick fix? In the first half of this episode Mark Schofield dives into the New England passing game. Missed opportunities abound, but is there a way to fix all of them? Probably not. So that puts pressure on the defense, right? Well, this week that means confusing Josh Allen. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 207: The Patriots terrible, awful, no good, very bad day against the 49ers
Where to start with the New England Patriots' absolute awful performance against the San Francisco 49ers? Cam Newton was terrible. The wide receivers and tight ends- other than Jakobi Meyers, who has inexplicably been buried on the depth chart- were terrible. The offensive line suffered more injuries, this time to Joe Thuney and Justin Herron. The defensive front seven was terrible against the 49ers rushing attack, and the secondary didn't fare any better. The coaches were bad. Oh, but special teams had a pretty okay day kicking the ball, so...bright spots? Is this the death knell for the Patriots' 2020 season? Or can this team still turn it around? The Scho Show 145: What the heck was that?
Dark days are upon us. This is not a reference to the time of year, although sunlight is disappearing into the horizon sooner than we like right now. No, it is a reference to the New England Patriots. On the heels of a disastrous loss to the San Francisco 49ers, we are faced with some burning questions. First, what the heck was that? Second, where do we go from here? This is not a good football team right now. It is a one-dimensional team that has to stay in positive game script situations to be effective offensively, but that creates the smallest of margins for error for their entire team. Cam Newton is struggling, the defense was porous at times, and that leads us to a third question: Are they sellers? One week to save the season. Can it be done? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 206: How the Patriots can beat the 49ers
The New England Patriots offense ranks in the bottom 10 this season, and their passing game is in the bottom three. Part of that is due to the absence of QB Cam Newton against the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as his rusty return against the Denver Broncos, but part is also due to the poor execution and consistency out of the other players on offense. So how can the unit turn itself around against a good San Francisco 49ers team? Can James White replicate his Super Bowl LI MVP performance against a Kyle Shanahan team? Or will the tight ends finally get involved in the passing game? And how will the defense handle the homecoming of QB Jimmy Garoppolo and and offense boasting All Pro tight end George Kittle? The 49ers zone rushing attack is a nightmare matchup for the New England defensive front- so how can the Patriots slow them down? Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 205: Patriots offense looks bleak in loss to the Broncos
There's no way around it- the New England Patriots offense stunk against a middling Denver Broncos defense. Cam Newton looked bad in his return from the COVID-19 reserves and the continuous stream of injuries to the offensive line didn't help. The Patriots offense has been one of the worst in the league over the past two games- where is the offense from the first three weeks of the year? Julian Edelman has to be dealing with an injury, because he's been a ghost. The running backs are hurting from the lack of consistency on the offensive line. And when the heck are the rookie tight ends going to see a target? Fortunately, the defense looks great. But unless the offense finds a fix, this team isn't going to find itself in the middle of the pack- a bad place to be for an NFL team. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show 144: San Francisco Week
We turn the page here at The Scho Show, focusing our attention on what lies ahead. This week? The San Francisco 49ers. Sure, many are going to make this game about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. But his contest might come down to two questions. First, can the New England Patriots slow down George Kittle? We look to answer that by diving into some numbers on where he lines up, what routes he runs, and the ways that Kyle Shanahan tries to get him open as Garoppolo's first read, thereby making life easier for his QB. Second, can the Patriots throw on the 49ers? Their defense has given up some big passing plays this year. The Scho Show Episode 143: A loss, and more, against the Denver Broncos
The New England Patriots and quarterback Cam Newton had the football with three minutes left, trailing by six point, and a chance to win. That Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos got to that point provides us with some good news...and some bad. On the positive side of the ledger, this New England defense could do enough on a day like today to keep the Patriots within striking distance, and generated turnovers when it needed to, to turn what looked like an embarrassing loss into a potential win. On the negative side of the ledger, this game looked like an embarrassing loss until just before that point. In this episode we look at the big picture, the ugly truths, and more. Pat and Spags are back talking previewing the Broncos, for the second week in a row. They discuss what to look for in the game, but, more importantly, how the Patriots, and Bill Belichick have navigated the COVID concerns in the locker room. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 203: Patriots lose a tough game against the Chiefs, NFL, Refs, and Brian Hoyer
The New England Patriots did not have their starting quarterback due to COVID. They had to play on the same day they traveled, thanks to the NFL. They had a touchdown taken off the board thanks to a terrible and early whistle by an official. And still they managed to battle late into the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, despite an ugly outing by back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer. The defense had one of their best outings of the Bill Belichick era, holding a potent Chiefs offense to just 19 points. And if the officials allowed Patrick Mahomes' sack in the second quarter to play out as an interception, and Shilique Calhoun's touchdown stood; and if Brian Hoyer hadn't taken a sack before the half, or hadn't fumbled the football on the 10-yard line in the third quarter; and if the officials didn't call 33 yards of ticky-tacky penalties in favor of the Chiefs on a crucial fourth quarter drive, including a defensive pass interference call on third down; then maybe the Patriots would have held a 23-6 lead halfway through the fourth quarter. But, alas, those are all ifs and the Patriots offense wasted an outstanding effort by Chase Winovich, Stephon Gilmore, and the whole New England defense. And yet we feel hopeful! The Patriots have two competitive road losses to two of the best teams in the NFL. They've shown they can run the ball and pass the ball successfully, and that the defense can shut down the best offense in the league. Week 4 of the season is now in the books, which means that the Patriots have completed their preseason. The question is whether all the pieces can come together for the rest of the year. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 202: How can the Patriots hang with the Chiefs?
The New England Patriots have a tall task when they face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the most talented players in the league and he's going to produce points- so how can the Patriots keep it close? Can Cam Newton and the offense score enough to stick with the Chiefs high-flying attack? Or will Bill Belichick and the defense borrow a game plan from a different era- say, his time with the Giants or from facing Peyton Manning- to keep the ball out of Mahomes' hands? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 201: Patriots blow out the Raiders
Cam Newton wasn't perfect, but the New England Patriots did enough to dominate a once-undefeated Las Vegas Raiders team. How did the Patriots do it? Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead had big days, while the defense found a way to eliminate an elite tight end in Darren Waller. Easy peasy. But who deserves the game ball? Who made the Patriots rushing attack so potent and how do the Patriots keep finding these Michigan talents in the sixth round? Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 200: How the Patriots can beat the Raiders
The New England Patriots are hoping to build off two strong weeks to start the 2020 season as they host a surprising strong Las Vegas Raiders team. The Raiders currently rank #1 in the league in points per drive as they're efficient at putting points on the board. So how should Bill Belichick, Steve Belichick, and the New England defense match up against this Raiders attack? And on the other side of the ball...uhhh...who do the Raiders have on the other side of the ball? Can Cam Newton build upon his success on the ground over the first two weeks, as well as his passing success from the Seahawks game? Will N'Keal Harry continue to grow as a target? And will the Patriots rushing attack emerge? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 199: Patriots fall to Seahawks, but Cam Newton looks amazing
It's rare that a New England Patriots loss leaves fans with a positive feeling, but losing a close game to the Seattle Seahawks where Julian Edelman, N'Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, and Cam Newton all had career days should have Patriots fans hopeful about the future. One week after a run-heavy offense gashed the Miami Dolphins, Newton and the passing attack showed an ability to attack a well-coached secondary- and if the offense can win by ground or by air, opposing teams will struggle to defend the Patriots. On the other side of the ball, the Patriots have to just tip their caps at the Seahawks receivers who scored three of their five touchdowns on preposterous plays. Nine times out of ten those plays wouldn't have resulted in touchdowns, and yet all three happened in the same game. That's just bad luck, and the defense should get back on track.
