The New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills on Saturday in what might have been the team's best game of the season. The defense played well, outside of two or three plays, and the offense looked solid against an elite Bills defense. If the Patriots can play like this against other teams, they'll have a real chance in the postseason. Tom Brady and company led a handful of impressive drives against a stingy Buffalo defense, with Julian Edelman, Sony Michel, and Rex Burkhead all standing out. Just as impressive, and possibly more importantly, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called an impressive slate of plays to get the ball into the hands of playmakers. On defense, apart from a snafu that led to a Buffalo touchdown prior to the half and a blown coverage by Stephon Gilmore and Devin McCourty that led to a 53-yard score by John Brown, the Bills could not generate any sort of offense, including four three-and-outs. The New England Patriots offense hasn't looked good since week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. Players have rotated in and out of the offense at receiver, tight end, and on the offensive line and there has yet to be a grouping that finds consistent success. Outside of Julian Edelman and James White, the Patriots seem to be without many options for Tom Brady. And unlike last year, the Patriots don't have the infrastructure to overcome these issues on the ground. They're down to their third-string center, they're out of fullbacks, and their tight ends are a clear drop in quality from the limited version of Rob Gronkowski last season. This means it's unlikely that they'll suddenly be able to run the ball with Sony Michel. Enter the 1-12 Cincinnati Bengals, the worst team in the NFL. Can the Patriots turn their offense around against this terrible team? Once again, the New England Patriots offense struggled to produce, and this latest outing was against a bad Kansas City Chiefs defense. The Chiefs generated pressure at will, as the Patriots blockers were outmatched, and Tom Brady simply couldn't connect with his receivers. Outside of an exciting opening drive, the Patriots offense couldn't do much else right for the rest of the day... ...or was the problem the officiating, as they took points off the board and ignored blatant pass interference calls? The Patriots would be the first to admit that officiating is never the reason to lose games, but it can also be true that the officiating took a New England touchdown off the board for no good reason. Even with the loss, the Patriots are still in strong position in the AFC, with a hold on a first round bye- but whatever lead they grew over the start of the season has vanished. It's easy to forget in the modern NFL, but football is actually a game of three phases. While the New England Patriots offense is not playing to the lofty standards its established over the past two decades, making it easy to say that the Patriots aren't the same team as they once were, the defense is playing extraordinarily well- as one of the five best defenses in NFL history through 11 games- and so is the special teams unit. Out with Tom Brady and Jakobi Meyers and Sony Michel, and their tepid production, and in with a defense that is allowing points at a rate not seen since the 1970s, and in with a special teams unit led by Matthew Slater that is just as likely to put points on the board as any Patriots tight end. The New England Patriots survived against the Dallas Cowboys, winning a hard-fought contest in the wet and rainy conditions by a final score of 13-9. As he does on each Glorious Victory Edition, Mark Schofield takes you through the great, the good and the bad from this victory. The New England Patriots went on the road against an opponent who needed a victory and came out victorious, topping the Philadelphia Eagles 17-10. As we do on each GVE, we break down the great, the good and the bad. As you might expect, we begin with the defense. After giving up 10 points this unit kept the Eagles off the scoreboard, forcing nothing but punts and turnovers on downs to close out the game. Impressive performances from a number of players on this side of the ball. But we also need to show some love for the special teams, as Jake Bailey and Matthew Slater helped control field position and keep the game tilted in New England's favor.
