The Scho Show Episode 47: Listener Follies
Episode 47 of The Scho Show is a mailbag edition, as Mark Schofield gets to spend some Quality Time with his favorite people: The gentle listeners. The show begins with some qualms, instead of questions, as listeners are wondering about the state of the offense as well as the state of the wide receiver room. Then Mark addresses how he would try and bring long some younger wide receivers if he were in TB12's cleats. In the second half of the show, Mark illustrates the duality of Patriots' fandom in the current moment: The angst over what could be coming compared with the confidence that this team will figure things out, as they have so many times before. The Scho Show Episode 46: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Mark Schofield helps you end your Thanksgiving long weekend on a down note, in the wake of New England's 28-22 loss to the Houston Texans. In this Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness installment, Mark breaks down the bad, the ugly and the silver linings from the Week 13 loss. There was a lot of bad, beginning with a meaningless play before halftime that was sadly emblematic of the entire night. Even when trying to look big picture, things seem bleak as well, with the Baltimore Ravens playing extremely well and potential home-field advantage - and yes even the division - hanging in the balance. The show ends with some silver linings, and then more big picture thoughts on whether this year could be similar to so many stories told before, as the Patriots try to figure out the "next ten words." The Scho Show Episode 45: Houston's Passing Game
In a very special Thanksgiving installment of The Scho Show, Mark Schofield gives you some nerdy football talk to wash down your turkey with. In the first half of the show Mark dives into the Houston offense and uses some numbers to illustrate what Deshaun Watson is doing well. Then, it is nerdy schematic time, as Mark highlights some of the concepts and designs that Bill O'Brien uses to protect his QB and give him opportunities to succeed downfield. In the second half of the show, Mark highlights some instances where Watson has struggled this season, specifically in terms of his hesitation in the face of pressure. Sacks are in part a quarterback stat, and Watson's high sack numbers are partly his fault. Then Mark closes out the show with a look at Friday's slate of college games and highlights perhaps his new favorite draft quarterback: Anthony Gordon from Washington State. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 174: Patriots defense set to square off against talented Texans offense
The New England Patriots defense is playing at a historic level and are coming off a dominant showing against one of the top offenses in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. They'll face another big challenge this week as they travel to Houston to take on Deshaun Watson, DeAndre Hopkins, and the rest of the Texans offense. Can Stephon Gilmore and company continue to dominate the competition? Or will Watson copy Lamar Jackson and break through? And will Tom Brady and the offense finally get on track? It's been a couple months since the Patriots offense has played at a level that resembles anything like other Patriots offenses of the past decade, so can New England get on track against a defense that is missing its cornerstone in J.J. Watt? Also, the Patriots can clinch a playoff spot with a victory and one other game going their way! Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 173: Patriots defense beats Cowboys, offense stays ugly
It's easy to forget in the modern NFL, but football is actually a game of three phases. While the New England Patriots offense is not playing to the lofty standards its established over the past two decades, making it easy to say that the Patriots aren't the same team as they once were, the defense is playing extraordinarily well- as one of the five best defenses in NFL history through 11 games- and so is the special teams unit. Out with Tom Brady and Jakobi Meyers and Sony Michel, and their tepid production, and in with a defense that is allowing points at a rate not seen since the 1970s, and in with a special teams unit led by Matthew Slater that is just as likely to put points on the board as any Patriots tight end. The Patriots beat the Dallas Cowboys in an ugly, sloppy, rainy game in a fashion reminiscent of the 2003 Patriots team. So it goes. Learn more about your ad choices. Your Thanksgiving Eve installment of The Scho Show is posted for your pre-holiday enjoyment. In this installment, Mark Schofield sings some odes of praise for left tackle Isaiah Wynn and defensive back Jonathan Jones. In the first half of the show Mark highlights some of the ups and downs from Wynn's game against the Dallas Cowboys, including his prowess as a run blocker and his battle with Robert Quinn on the edge. In the second half of the show, Mark highlights some of what Jones did against Randall Cobb and the Cowboys' passing game. His recovery speed and awareness are highlighted. The Scho Scho Episode 43: A Week 12 Glorious Victory
The New England Patriots survived against the Dallas Cowboys, winning a hard-fought contest in the wet and rainy conditions by a final score of 13-9. As he does on each Glorious Victory Edition, Mark Schofield takes you through the great, the good and the bad from this victory. As most weeks do, we begin with the defense, which slowed up the league's top passing offense and held Dak Prescott largely in check. Stephon Gilmore had another monster game, holding Amari Cooper without a reception for the first time in his Dallas career. The special teams units had another big game, with Matthew Slater chipping in with an enormous blocked punt. Also getting some attention are the two rookie wide receives, N'Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers. Harry notched his first NFL touchdown catch, and Meyers showed that he truly remains in the Tom Brady Circle of Trust. As always, game balls and the Takes of the Game from the Scho Show Slack Channel were announced at the end of the show. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show 42: Dak Prescott Plus Quality Time With RJ Ochoa
The 42nd installment of The Scho Show is geared at getting you ready for Sunday afternoon's big tilt between the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys. In the first half of the show Mark Schofield walks you through how Dak Prescott is putting up MVP-like numbers, and how the Dallas offense attacks defenses in the passing game. From "layering" the offense, to using pre-snap movement and motion, through Prescott's ability to throw to the boundaries to his relationship with Amari Cooper, the passing game can be deadly effective. Then Mark welcomes in RJ Ochoa from Blogging the Boys for some Quality Time. They talk more about Prescott, the impact of Cooper on the offense, the weak spots on the defensive side of the ball and what it will take for RJ to enjoy a Victory Polo Monday. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 172: Can Isaiah Wynn save the Patriots offense against the Cowboys?
The New England Patriots offense started off the season with a great outing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and followed that up with solid games against the hapless Miami Dolphins and the toothless New York Jets. Since that Jets game, however, the Patriots offense has had just one good performance over a span of seven games- against an awful Washington team. What's the problem? There's been a rotating cast of receivers, the running backs haven't produced, and the tight end depth is arguably the weakest the Patriots have had since 2001. But there's a lot of hope that sophomore left tackle Isaiah Wynn, who is returning from the injured reserve, will fix all the offensive woes, starting with a tough game against the Dallas Cowboys. Will Wynn right the offensive ship? Or is it wrong to entrust the improvement of the entire offensive unit to a second year player with 82 career snaps? And will the New England defense continue to play at a high level, or will they falter against another great offense? Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 41: New England Defense and Quality Time with Michael Kist
Episode 41 of The Scho Show is here for your listening pleasure. In this game Mark Schofield breaks down four plays from Sunday afternoon's win over the Philadelphia Eagles. These plays highlight how the New England defense was able to take away what Carson Wentz wanted to do on offense. From Kyle Van Noy taking away a wheel route, to Ja'Whaun Bentley sinking under a route to Zach Ertz, and through the secondary just taking away options, the New England defense was on point. Then, the Roman senator himself, Michael J. Kist, returns to do a post-mortem on the show. He talks about things from the Eagles' perspective and shares outsider insight on Tom Brady, the state of the Patriots' offense and where New England might be headed. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 171: Patriots get revenge, beat the Eagles
The New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in week 11 to move to 9-1 on the season and get back on track after their poor performance before the bye week. While the Patriots were unable to pick up any games of a lead against their competition in the AFC this week, the defense got back in championship form, a positive development. Stephon Gilmore and the secondary erased the Eagles receivers, and Danny Shelton and Lawrence Guy stepped up to stop the rushing attack in the second half of the game. But while the defense excelled, what's the deal with the Patriots offense? They have put together one good game since week 3 (Week 5 vs Washington), and have looked merely average for all the other games. Is Tom Brady okay? Are reinforcements on the way? The Scho Show Episode 40: A Week 11 Glorious Victory
A W is a W is a W. Episode 40 of The Scho Show is another Glorious Victory Edition. The New England Patriots went on the road against an opponent who needed a victory and came out victorious, topping the Philadelphia Eagles 17-10. As we do on each GVE, we break down the great, the good and the bad. As you might expect, we begin with the defense. After giving up 10 points this unit kept the Eagles off the scoreboard, forcing nothing but punts and turnovers on downs to close out the game. Impressive performances from a number of players on this side of the ball. But we also need to show some love for the special teams, as Jake Bailey and Matthew Slater helped control field position and keep the game tilted in New England's favor. As always, there are game balls to be awarded, and in addition a bit of a twist on our usual "take of the game" from The Scho Scho Slack Channel. Which again, you can join! The Scho Show Episode 39: The Eagles Defense and Quality Time With Michael Kist
As we close in on the 40th installment of The Scho Show it is time to take a deeper look at the Philadelphia Eagles. The show begins some numbers, as Mark Schofield walks through some of what scares him about the Eagles defense. Specifically their ability to generate pressure on opposing passers. Then Mark highlights some route concepts that have worked against the Philadelphia secondary, and how if given time Tom Brady could be in for a big afternoon. Then the venerable Michael J. Kist joins the show for Quality Time. The cohost of the wildly popular Kist and Solak Show as well as the also popular QB Scho Show comes on to talk all things Eagles. From their struggles at wide receiver, to the issues with their defense through the play from Carson Wentz, Michael breaks it all down. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 170: Patriots look to get back on track against the Eagles
The New England Patriots need to shake off their lackluster week 9 performance against the Baltimore Ravens and get back on track with a strong outing against the Philadelphia Eagles. How do these teams stack up? The Patriots defense seems to match up well against the Eagles, since Philadelphia is fairly thin at wide receiver, allowing New England to dedicate more resources to stopping the run. On the other side of the ball, the Patriots offense will have their hands full against the potent Philly pass rush, which should affect how Tom Brady and company choose to attack the Eagles defense. The Scho Show Episode 38: Carson Wentz and Quality Time With the Eagles Run Game
With the bye week in the rear view mirror it is time to turn our attention to the Philadelphia Eagles. In the 38th installment of The Scho Show Mark Schofield focuses on the Eagles' offense. The show begins with a discussion about quarterback Carson Wentz and the duality of his style of play. Then Mark dives into Wentz and hesitation. While different from the kind of hesitation the Patriots saw from Jared Goff in Super Bowl 53, the hesitation is present, and there will be opportunities for the Patriots' defense to capitalize. Then mark turns his attention to the Eagles' rushing attack. From their tremendous play in their interior offensive line to the production they are getting from their running backs on the ground and in the air, this poses a challenge for the Patriots' defense. In this edition, Mark breaks down the good, the bad and the ugly, and there was lots to talk about i the last two categories. Sure, the team fought back after going down early. The Scho Show Episode 35: Defending Lamar Plus Quality Time With Doug Farrar
Episode 35 of The Scho Show is up and ready for you, to help you get prepared for the game everyone is looking forward to this weekend. In the beginning Mark Schofield dives back into some nerdy football talk, highlighting just how difficult Lamar Jackson and this Baltimore Ravens offense is to defend. From movement and eye angles to screwing with the reads for linebackers, this is a tough running game to attack. Oh, and there's Lamar Jackson's pure athletic ability - and his growth as a passer - to contend with. Oh and there is some more Tite discussion, if you are into that sort of thing. Then during "Quality Time" Doug Farrar joins the show. Doug was at the Baltimore game in Seattle and saw first-hand what Lamar can do as a quarterback. They discuss how Bill Belichick defended Colin Kaepernick in two different meetings, the idea of "spying the gap," Lamar's growth as a passer, how Belichick will probably have multiple plans of attack, why we might see Cover 3 Bail, and oh yeah, what to expect when the Patriots have the football. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 168: The Patriots season finally starts as they face the Ravens
The New England Patriots faced a series of uninspiring opponents to start the regular season, from the hapless Pittsburgh Steelers, to the even more hapless Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. The level of competition didn't improve through the first eight weeks of the year as embarrassing team after embarrassing team lined up to play the Patriots to get, well, embarrassed. Only one team that the Patriots played currently have a winning record (Buffalo Bills). That changes in week 9 as the Patriots embark on the meat of their regular season, with games against the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and Kansas City Chiefs. All teams with records .500 or better and currently in the playoff hunt. How do the Patriots match up against the Ravens? How will Bill Belichick try to stop Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson? The Scho Show Episode 34: Tite, Revisited; Plus Quality Time with Taylor Kyles
The New England Patriots face their stiffest test to date this weekend when they travel south to take on the Baltimore Ravens. Standing in the way of a 9-0 start is the dynamic young passer Lamar Jackson. His numbers this season - both as a passer and as a runner - are worthy of MVP consideration. They also speak to his development at the position and the task ahead of Bill Belichick and this Patriots' defense. So how will they look to contain Jackson? Perhaps by looking back to the Big 12. This show opens with a revisitation of a piece from this summer, looking at Iowa State, the Tite front and the future of defense. Then, Mark Schofield looks at how the Los Angeles Chargers used that defense in the playoffs against Jackson. Then, fan favorite Taylor Kyles joins the show for some "Quality Time." Pulpit Playback Episode #2: Ravens versus Patriots in the 2014-2015 Divisional Round
In the second installment of Pulpit Playback Mark Schofield looks back at the Divisional Round game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens from the 2014-2015 season. While the Patriots entered the game with a 14-2 record and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, many were uneasy at the prospects of the Ravens - who were the sixth seed in the playoffs and needed a win in their final game just to get in - coming to town. After all, the Ravens had already beaten the Patriots in two playoffs games at Gillette Stadium. Could they do it again? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 167: Patriots finish perfect first half of 2019 with victory over the Browns
The New England Patriots are an impressive 8-0 through the first eight weeks of the season. They rank 1st in points scored and 1st in points allowed. The only other team since the NFL merger to accomplish all three feats was the 1985 Chicago Bears, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Additionally, over 60% of teams that have started 8-0 post-merger have reached the Super Bowl. Over one in three have won the whole thing. So the Patriots are in great company from a historical standpoint. They have no peers from a contemporary view of the AFC. This podcast breaks down the Patriots lead over the AFC, and addresses some of the, uh, "limited concerns" that might arise from the first half of the season as New England faces down the second half of the year. The New England Patriots are looking to be the 33rd team to reach 8-0 in NFL history, and the third time in franchise history (2007, 2015), as they take on the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have been wildly inconsistent this season, blowing out the Baltimore Ravens one week and getting blown out by the Tennessee Titans another week. Can they find their footing against the incredible Patriots defense? The Patriots are hoping to match up well against the Browns offense, which relies heavily on three players- running back Nick Chubb, and wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry- and not much else. Which defensive backs will be tasked with covering which receiver? How can New England stop the Browns rushing attack? Who are the Patriots' defensive X Factors? And on the other side of the ball, can the Patriots find their groove against a potent Browns pass rush? How will Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady construct an offense to negate Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon? Who will be the offensive X Factors? And what will be the final score? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 165: Patriots demolish the Jets on Monday Night Football
The New England Patriots crushed the New York Jets on Monday Night Football with a final score of 33-0, in a game that was even more lopsided than the score. The New England defense held the Jets offense to hilariously impotent levels of production, with the secondary doing a great job in particular. But perhaps the stars of the team have come from the revamped linebacker corps that could be the best unit of the Bill Belichick era. And while the Patriots offense hasn't been outstanding, they've still been good enough to get the job done as Tom Brady and company have overcome an understated number of injuries to remain productive. Perhaps the team's fortunes will change as the Patriots acquired a wide receiver from the Atlanta Falcons, via trade. Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 164: Patriots face Jets on Monday Night Football with chance to go 7-0
There have been 8 teams to go 7-0 since the 2010 season: 2011 Green Bay Packers, 2012 Atlanta Falcons, 2013 Kansas City Chiefs, 2015 Denver Broncos, 2015 Carolina Panthers, 2015 New England Patriots, 2015 Cincinnati Bengals, and 2018 Los Angeles Rams. 2015 was a crazy year. The 2019 New England Patriots are looking to be the 9th team to accomplish that feat this decade. Looking bigger picture, there have only been 6 teams in the Super Bowl era to post a better point differential through 7 games than the +142 point different the Patriots have through 6 games. Two of those teams (1991 Washington and 1999 St. Louis Rams) won the Super Bowl, and another three lost the Super Bowl (1967 Oakland Raiders, 2006 Chicago Bears, 2007 New England Patriots). The sixth team (1966 Dallas Cowboys) lost in the NFL Championship game to the Green Bay Packers, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Basically, the Patriots are in great company and are looking to join the ranks of the best teams in league history as they take on the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. The Patriots defense matches up well against the Jets offense. Tom Brady is still Tom Brady. Will the Patriots move to 7-0? Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 163: Patriots defeat the Giants, move to 6-0 atop the AFC
The New England Patriots moved to 6-0 with a Thursday Night victory over the New York Giants and it's not too early to turn focus towards the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs, the presumed top contender to the Patriots in the AFC, were defeated at home by the Houston Texans, who probably should be considered the top contender...right? Which teams in the AFC playoff picture are actually any good? Meanwhile, the Patriots defense continued its exemplary play, although there appears to be a possible weakness in their style of play that a better quarterback might be able to exploit. And is there any reason for concern with the Patriots' offense and their lackluster production in recent weeks? Or is it just a matter of injuries? Learn more about your ad choices.
