Patriot Nation 61: Deflategate Debunked with Michael Hurley, Eli to the Hall?
Michael Hurley joins the show to debunk Deflategate. They discuss his newest article on CBS Boston, and some of the lesser known facts of the case. It's the perfect conversation to listen to in order to shut down people who refuse to believe the Patriots didn't do anything wrong. After the conversation, Pat then discusses Eli Manning, and whether his career is Hall of Fame worthy. The Scho Show Episode 69: Senior Bowl Day Two
A very nice installment of The Scho Show... Mark Schofield recounts Day Two of the Senior Bowl live from Mobile, Alabama in this installment. As you would expect, Mark opens up with a discussion of the quarterbacks, including a long-winded but applicable tennis analogy. This segment of the show includes a potential scheme fit for Jalen Hurts, as well as how Justin Herbert seems to be the standout passer down on the gulf shore. Then Mark shifts gears and talks about the offensive line. From potential tackle depth to Joe Thuney insurance on the interior, and more, Mark has you covered. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 68: Tuesday in Mobile
The first day is in the books from Mobile, Alabama. As a number of NFL hopefuls try and demonstrate that they can be the next big thing in the league, Mark Schofield is on site to cover the event for Pats Pulpit. In this episode Mark begins where else? With the quarterbacks. He outlines how the first practice is a "baseline day" and then works through what he saw from the six passers down at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Then Mark turns his attention to the tight end position. He starts with some audio from Adam Trautman, a small school prospect from the University of Dayton hoping to remove "the asterisk." Then Mark highlights what he saw on the field from him and the other TE prospects. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 67: Senior Bowl QBs
It is a big week here at The Scho Show, as Mark Schofield heads south for his fifth trip to the Senior Bowl. To kick off the week Mark breaks down the six quarterbacks who will be in attendence down at the big event. First up are two passers likely to hear their names called in the first round of the draft, Justin Herbert from Oregon and Jordan Love from Utah State. If you like arm talent, you'll like these two. The next two quarterbacks are probably Day Two prospects, but it includes one QB Mark is very excited to see. First is Anthony Gordon, a prospect from Washington State that has really caught Mark's attention this draft cycle. Then Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts, who certainly has a future in the NFL. The final two passers are probably more Day Three developmental types, but with a solid showing in Mobile both Shea Patterson and Steven Montez could secure a draft spot. The Scho Show Episode 66: Senior Bowl, Burrow Wins a Natty and Joe Brady
We cover a lot of ground in the 66th installment of The Scho Show. Off the bat Mark Schofield has some thoughts on the National Championship Game, and the prospects that were on the field down in New Orleans from both LSU and Clemson. Don't overthink Joe Burrow, the running backs are impressive, Isaiah Simmons is as well, and was Trevor Lawrence dinged up a bit? Then, Mark has some quick thoughts on Joe Brady to the Carolina Panthers. The rest of the show dives into the Senior Bowl, looking at prospects (non-quarterbacks) on both sides of the football as Mark starts packing for Mobile. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 63: Offensive Free Agents and Coaching Moves
Episode 63 of The Scho Show is available for your listening...we'll say enjoyment. Yeah, let's go with that. Mark Schofield opens with a discussion about the coaching moves over the past 24 hours, and highlights some of the potential names to keep in mind for an offensive coordinator gig. Just, you know, in case a job like that would suddenly become available in New England. Then, Mark moves into free agency again and starts putting together a watch list of potential free agents to keep in mind on the offensive side of the football. Of course, much of the movement this off-season will stem from decisions made about the current roster, but this is a good starting point as you look around the league. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 185: Patriots season ends with a whimper against the Titans
The New England Patriots allowed the Tennessee Titans and running back Derrick Henry to walk all over them in the first half, and Tom Brady and the offense played another lackluster game. The Patriots lost 20-13, thanks to a last-second pick-six from Tom Brady, which meant that the Patriots just needed two touchdowns and a field goal to win the game- and the hapless Patriots offense was unable to deliver. So what now? What lies in the future for Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the Patriots? Devin McCourty, Kyle Van Noy, Joe Thuney, and many others are free agents, and it's clear that the existing offensive cast is not enough to compete against the high-flying Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs. The Scho Show Episode 62: And Thus Begins Free Agency
Turn the page we must, and so together we look ahead to the offseason. It begins with an assessment of the upcoming free agents on the New England Patriots. Looking at first the defense and then the offense, Mark Schofield walks through the various restricted and unrestricted free agents, with some thoughts on each player and whether the Patriots will look to secure them for 2020 or not. As you might expect, there is a lengthy discussion about the elephant in the room... In addition, Mark highlights the plans for the next few episodes as we shift into draft mode. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 184: Patriots host Titans on Wild Card Weekend!
The New England Patriots were unable to keep their streak of first round byes alive after falling to the Miami Dolphins in the regular season finale, and will have to host the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, January 4th, at 8:15 PM ET. This is the team's first wild card game since 2009, and just the fourth of the Bill Belichick era (2005, 2006). So what will the Patriots have in store for the Titans? Can Tom Brady get on the same page as his other receivers, or will the team rely entirely on Julian Edelman and the trio of running backs in Sony Michel, James White, and Rex Burkhead? And on defense, can Stephon Gilmore and company shake off an ugly outing against Miami and stop the suddenly-potent Titans offense, led by enormous running back Derrick Henry and the apparently elite Ryan Tannehill? The Scho Show Episode 60: The Tennessee Defense
New year, new episode. Mark Schofield is back for the 60th installment of The Scho Show as we get closer and closer to Wild Card Weekend. In this episode, Mark turns his attention to the Tennessee Titans' defense. In the first half of the show Mark looks at their pass defense, and highlights some route concepts that have worked against the Titans' overwhelmingly single-high coverage schemes. Some route designs such as Yankee, Mills, Hoss and more should be part of the gameplan. In the second part of the show Mark focuses on the Titans' run defense. The numbers are not bad, but ther film highlights some flaws. The Patriots would be wise to attack the bubble, run weakside, run toss plays and look for cutback opportunitites against a linebacker group that can be slow to get into run fits. Mark Schofield is back on this New Year's Eve edition of The Scho Show. In this installment, Mark recaps Black Monday in the NFL, highlighting some of the various moves made by franchises and working in some potential implications for the New England Patriots. In the second half of the show, Mark talks Ryan Tannehill. Both the numbers and the film point to how this might be a big test for the Patriots' defense. Mark highlights how Tannehill has stressed defenses, what teams have tried to do against him, and outlines what he expects the Titans' passing gameplan to look like come Saturday night. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 183: Patriots hand away first round bye with disappointing loss to Dolphins
The New England Patriots had an opportunity to solidify a first round bye if they could simply defeat the once-hapless Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium, and they came up short. The offense was terrible. The defense was bad. The coaches failed to make adjustments and appeared to surrender prior to halftime. What went wrong? Were there any positives? The success of the running game was perhaps the lone bright spot for a Patriots offense that included a pick-six and featured a touchdown to a former linebacker out of necessity. There is not a lot of trust among Tom Brady and his skill players, and now they don't have a week to allow Julian Edelman to heal. And on defense, Defensive Player of the Year candidate Stephon Gilmore was picked apart by Ryan Fitzpatrick and DeVante Parker, the latter of whom Gilmore held catchless in the first match-up. When the game was on the line, the defense couldn't stop the Dolphins from marching down the field. And the coaching...what was going through their head before halftime? The Scho Show Episode 58: A.J. Brown and Derrick Henry
We had to put the previous episode behind us... Mark Schofield is back for a bonus episode of The Scho Show. In Episode 58 he starts breaking down the Tennessee Titans. In the first half of the show the focus is on wide receiver A.J. Brown. Looking at what he does well, how he wins on routes, and how the New Orleans Saints were able to contain him. Plus, thoughts on how the Patriots will look to do the same. In the second half of the show, Mark looks at Derrick Henry and the Titans' rushing game. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 182: Patriots can secure first round bye in season finale against the Dolphins
The New England Patriots earned a first round bye every season from 2010-18, and they have a chance to secure their 10th-straight bye week if they can defeat the once-hapless Miami Dolphins in week 17. First round byes are incredible valuable because they reduce the amount of games a team has to play in the postseason, where the opponents are all the top teams in the league. In a game with a lot of luck and variance, fewer games make it easier to reach the Super Bowl. And the Patriots' regular season success has set the team up for playoff success over the past decade, with a preposterous eight straight trips to the AFC Championship Game (2011-18), a ludicrous five trips to the Super Bowl thus far (2011, 2014, 2016-18) and three Super Bowl victories (2014, 2016, 2018). All that stands in the way of the Patriots and another bye week is a Dolphins team that once challenged for the title of "worst team in NFL history", but now is...fine? Miami is 4-4 over their past eight games, and while the defense is still terrible, the offense varies from "awful" to "good enough" with Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm. Can Fitzpatrick bring enough Fitzmagic to the table to ruin the Patriots' holiday week? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 181: Patriots clinch AFC East title for 11th straight season!
The New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills on Saturday in what might have been the team's best game of the season. The defense played well, outside of two or three plays, and the offense looked solid against an elite Bills defense. If the Patriots can play like this against other teams, they'll have a real chance in the postseason. Tom Brady and company led a handful of impressive drives against a stingy Buffalo defense, with Julian Edelman, Sony Michel, and Rex Burkhead all standing out. Just as impressive, and possibly more importantly, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called an impressive slate of plays to get the ball into the hands of playmakers. On defense, apart from a snafu that led to a Buffalo touchdown prior to the half and a blown coverage by Stephon Gilmore and Devin McCourty that led to a 53-yard score by John Brown, the Bills could not generate any sort of offense, including four three-and-outs. The Scho Show Episode 55: A Week 16 Glorious Victory Edition
Football is a game of emotion. Deny emotion, a wise writer once wrote, and you miss an important element of the game. Whether it is seeing your wide receiver return to the sideline and immediately deliver on a huge catch and run while spinning away from contact, or seeing a running back refuse to be denied short of the goal-line, or whether it is seeing your 42-year old quarterback push the sun back into the sky one more time as it tries to set on his career, football, is a game of emotion. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 180: How the Patriots can win the AFC East on Saturday against the Bills
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has the opportunity to clinch his 16th straight AFC East division title (he didn't play in 2008) with a week 16 victory this Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. It might feel like a long time since the Patriots have had to stave off competition in the AFC East at this stage of the season, but the Patriots didn't clinch the AFC East title last year until...week 16! So how can the Patriots pull off another division title? How should the Patriots offense attack the elite Bills defense? Will this be a James White or Sony Michel game? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 179: Patriots dispatch the Bengals, AFC playoff picture takes shape
The New England Patriots defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in convincing fashion, setting a season-high in rushing yards and locking down the Bengals offense for most of the game. But what should Patriots fans take away from this game? Is the offense back on track, or is this just the result of playing the worst team in the league? Is the running game for real, or should we be concerned about the lack of a passing attack? What's the deal with Julian Edelman and Mohamed Sanu? And just how much can the team rely on the defense to carry the team? Or, perhaps we should embrace the fact that the Patriots have the best defense since 2002, and one of the best defenses in NFL history, and that should be enough to buoy a decidedly mediocre offensive attack. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore continues to make his case for defensive player of the year, while Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, and the rest of the defense are still playing at a high level. The Scho Show 52: A Week 15 Glorious Victory
The New England Patriots got themselves back in the win column on Sunday, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 34-13 at FirstEnergy Stadium. Mark Schofield is back with another Glorious Victory Installment of The Scho Show as a result, breaking down the great, the good, the bad and the elephant in the room in the wake of New England's victory. The show begins where so many have this season, talking about the great play from the New England defense. Stephon Gilmore had himself a two interception game complete with a Pick Six, and Mark uses some notes...colorful at that...from a recent coaching clinic to highlight Gilmore's technique. The increased usage from N'Keal Harry and the ground game also get discussed. On the negative side of the ledger, there were drops, injuries, individual miscues and another shaky performance from Tom Brady. That leads us to the elephant in the room... Of course, the Take of the Game from The Scho Show Slack Channel was highlighted, as were some game balls and a listener in particular who made the trek to Cincinnati for the contest. Pat and Spags are back, and this week, they're discussing the horrible officiating in the Chiefs game. The calls may not have lost the game for the Patriots, but it's embarrassing that the league would allow outcomes to be impacted by bad officiating. They also discuss SpyGate 2.0, and how much of a joke it is that this is even a story. Make sure to subscribe to the Pats Pulpit Podcast Network on iTunes or wherever you listen to your podcasts. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 178: The Patriots are on to Cincinnati- can they finally fix the offense?
The New England Patriots offense hasn't looked good since week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. Players have rotated in and out of the offense at receiver, tight end, and on the offensive line and there has yet to be a grouping that finds consistent success. Outside of Julian Edelman and James White, the Patriots seem to be without many options for Tom Brady. And unlike last year, the Patriots don't have the infrastructure to overcome these issues on the ground. They're down to their third-string center, they're out of fullbacks, and their tight ends are a clear drop in quality from the limited version of Rob Gronkowski last season. This means it's unlikely that they'll suddenly be able to run the ball with Sony Michel. Enter the 1-12 Cincinnati Bengals, the worst team in the NFL. Can the Patriots turn their offense around against this terrible team? And if not, should we all accept that this offense is simply "not good" and that any success of the team will rely entirely on the backs of the defense? Learn more about your ad choices. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 177: Patriots offense struggles again, this time against a bad Chiefs defense
Once again, the New England Patriots offense struggled to produce, and this latest outing was against a bad Kansas City Chiefs defense. The Chiefs generated pressure at will, as the Patriots blockers were outmatched, and Tom Brady simply couldn't connect with his receivers. Outside of an exciting opening drive, the Patriots offense couldn't do much else right for the rest of the day... ...or was the problem the officiating, as they took points off the board and ignored blatant pass interference calls? The Patriots would be the first to admit that officiating is never the reason to lose games, but it can also be true that the officiating took a New England touchdown off the board for no good reason. Even with the loss, the Patriots are still in strong position in the AFC, with a hold on a first round bye- but whatever lead they grew over the start of the season has vanished. They cannot afford to lose another game this year. Learn more about your ad choices. The Scho Show Episode 49: The Come to Jesus Talk
In the wake of another disappointing loss, Mark Schofield struggles to find the answers on episode 49 of The Scho Show. Harkening back to his days as an attorney, Mark summons the courage for one more "come to Jesus" discussion. Friends, it is time to be honest: This is not a complete football team right now. Yes, the defense and special teams are doing more than their fair share. But as Bill Belichick himself always stresses, you need all three phases. Yes, there were moments. Yes, it seemed like the Old Warrior was pushing back the shadows of winter on a fourth down scramble. Yes, the officiating was horrible. But you must admit, there are issues. Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 176: Patriots will have their hands full against the Chiefs
The New England Patriots offense could not have asked for a better final four weeks to get back on track. Not only do they get to work out their issues against teams like the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals, the Patriots also get to face one of the worst defenses in the league in the Kansas City Chiefs. Teams have had a lot of success running the ball against the Chiefs- so this could be a big game for Sony Michel- but the Patriots can only run the ball if they find a way to stifle the potent Chiefs offense and keep the score close. Are the New England defenders up for such a big task? Also: How will the top teams in the AFC fare over the final four weeks? How will the Patriots defense score this week? Pats Pulpit Podcast Ep. 175: Patriots offense struggles against the Texans, lose control of #1 seed
The New England Patriots lost to the Houston Texans in what was a blowout, prior to garbage time. The defense played well enough to win, but the offense turned the ball over as a gift to the Texans at the start of the game, abandoned the run, and were just uninspired all around. This has been the story of the Patriots offense for all of 2019. The Patriots defense is playing its best football of the Bill Belichick era, and the offense is struggling to show any kind of consistency. That might work against some of the weaker teams in the NFL, but the offense has come up short against the three playoff caliber teams they've faced- the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans. Imagine you're offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. What's the fix? How can Tom Brady and the offense start moving the ball with more regularity and success? Is the answer Sony Michel? Or is it James White? And while Julian Edelman is putting together one of the best seasons of his career, what should the expectations be for the rotating cast of Phillip Dorsett, Mohamed Sanu, Jakobi Meyers, and N'Keal Harry, and can any of them emerge as a reliable #2 receiver?
