387 | What is Your #1 Excuse?

"The best advice I ever got as an entrepreneur was this: Don't let your kids be your excuse." 386 | Guest Interview: John O'Sullivan

Today on the podcast, I am pleased to introduce the founder of Changing The Game Project, author of two #1 best-selling books, podcast host, and internationally known speaker (including TEDx and The U.S. Olympic Committee), John O’Sullivan!  John and I go way back; we’ve spoken at conferences together, we’ve done booths together, and we’ve learned from one another. He’s someone I respect, admire, cheer for, and look up to in the sports world. John is known for his wealth of practical, hands-on knowledge, and his passion for helping parents and coaches show up for their athletes in ways that really matter. He believes in creating a player-centered environment and tough-love coaching with compassion. What makes this episode stand out as being particularly relevant to parents and coaches is that John talks in-depth about how we can support young people RIGHT NOW, as the ripple effects of COVID-19 impact our world today. He gives sage advice about how you can support your athletes, push your athletes, and also hold space for their unique mindset challenges during this time.  After being a guest on John O’Sullivan’s Way of Champions Podcast, it was so fun to put him in the hot seat and sit in the student’s chair.  I love this conversation, I learned a ton, and I’m sure you will too.    Follow John: Website: https://changingthegameproject.com/  Podcast: https://changingthegameproject.com/category/podcast/  Instagram: @ctgprojecthq https://www.instagram.com/ctgprojecthq/  Books: https://www.amazon.com/John-OSullivan/e/B00CBH98SA  WOC Conference:  https://changingthegameproject.mykajabi.com/woc-2022-registration    Here’s a glance at this episode: [4:32] John begins by telling us about his upcoming virtual conference and its impressive line-up of speakers, including Steve Kerr, Dave Aranda, Trevor Ragan, and Ron Adams. [8:22] How can we support athletes in a COVID-19 world? John talks openly about the importance of addressing athletes’ mental health. He points to a notable increase in eating disorders, anxiety, and divorce. In his words, “in the last two years, the amount of kids I know in [these situations] are probably equivalent to the previous 25 years combined.” [15:12] When athlete behavior changes, there’s usually something going on behind the scenes. John suggests asking one key question to get the conversation rolling, and shares how at-home stress can manifest on the field. Finally, John explains how he actively works to create a safe and joyful space at practice.  [23:28] John answers the question, “How can you hold athletes to a high standard while they’re struggling?” He likens cognitive injuries to physical injuries and encourages coaches and parents to treat them with compassion while holding them to a ‘rehabilitation plan’.  [29:53] Burnout is REAL. John believes the best way to prevent burnout is to put yourself first, and sometimes that means hitting the brakes. If we can’t take care of ourselves, we’ll never be able to fully show up for others. [37:12] Peeling back the curtain on his own practice with mindfulness, John knows from experience that just a few minutes a day of mindfulness can be life-changing.  [41:36] John and Lindsey wrap up our episode today with 5 rapid-fire questions. With a quick discussion about Atomic Habits, John’s favorite outdoor activities, his family, and his love of coaching, John leaves us a few final nuggets of wisdom to end the episode!   RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast! In today's Mental Monday, we are choosing to take action before we feel "ready". It's easy to get stuck in perfection purgatory, feel overwhelmed, and procrastinate until some magical future date when you think you'll have it all figured out. 383 | 3 Ways to Get Stronger Competitors

Let’s say your athlete sucks at free throws.  As a coach, you know what to do. You know to take a look at their form, correct anything that needs correcting, and have them spend lots and lots of time practicing free throws.  But what if your athlete is great at free throws in practice, but totally falls apart in competition. Then what?  I think we can all agree this scenario is a little trickier.  While coaching the physical side of competition is pretty straightforward, coaching the mental game is often abiguous. And sadly, even the best competitors are not always good at teaching others to be great competitors.  Many great competitors come to it naturally. Some are born with natural competitive instincts, and some simply play long enough that they eventually figure it out (but never really break it down into a teachable formula). As a coach, maybe you fall into one of these two categories.  If you’ve ever struggled to teach your athletes how to compete, you are not alone.  I was fortunate enough to have a teacher show me how to compete, and it’s my joy to pass their wisdom along.  Today, I’m breaking down my 3 part formula for creating better competitors (featured in my course, The Psychology of Competition). I believe that consistent routines lead to consistent results, so my system is built on time-tested, hands-on routines that you can bring back to your team and easily integrate into practice and competition. In this episode, I’ll teach you: Pre-Competition Routines - How you can help your athletes reframe their nerves, reflect on past performances, pay attention to their physiological mindstate before competition, and coach them through simple exercises to help them compete at their best. In-Competition Routines - Learn about our hard-hitting Mistake Ritual that will help your athletes re-set and re-center during competition when they need it most.  Post-Competition Routines - Including one powerful critiquing exercise your athletes should be doing after every game, win or lose.  Today’s extended episode will give you real-life, actionable tips to help you create relentless competitors. 380 | Guest Interview: Trevor Ragan

Today on the podcast, I am joined by author, podcast host, founder of Train Ugly and the Learner Lab; my friend and fellow lifelong student, Trevor Ragan!  Working with best selling authors, Olympic coaches, professional athletes, renowned professors, and thousands of coaches, teachers, students, and players from all over the world, Trevor is (in his words) “On an adventure to understand the science of how to become a better learner”.  Due to his years and years of research, boots-on-the-ground, and behind-the-scenes, Trevor has a special ability to dissect and synthesize really complicated concepts and research into exercises and ideas that you and I can implement. He’s a man of science and great insight beyond his years. In this episode, we get deep into the topic of fixed vs. growth mindset, how to run towards fear, and how your beliefs ABOUT your emotions actually shape your experience. He shares stories of middle school “anti-talent shows”, talks about the need for psychological safety in teams, and even opens up about being diagnosed with cancer.  When I first started my podcast, my husband told me, “interview people that you want to learn from”, and Trevor was high on my list. If you hear the scratch of my pencil in the background, It’s because I was scribbling notes the entire time.  Follow Trevor: Website : https://trainugly.com/trevor-ragan/ Audiobook : https://thelearnerlab.com/learner-the-audiobook/ Blog, Cancer: Lessons Learned : https://thelearnerlab.com/cancer-lessons-learned/ The Learner Lab Podcast: https://thelearnerlab.com/podcast/    Here’s a glance at this episode: [4:41] Trevor talks about how he got here; from creating basketball programs, to creating programs for prisons. Lindsey and Trevor discuss the learning curve for new mindset coaches, failing on a public stage, and what Dave Chappelle has to do with it.   [12:01] Starting with the quote, “If you want to change a behavior, attack it at the mindet and environment, not just the behavior” Trevor explains how he (personally) runs toward fear. He also talks about the science of stress, and gives tips to help you shift the way you think about stress and other “negative” emotions. [16:41] Struggle feeds a fixed mindset. But if you can start to see stress as physical preparation and a necessary part of growth, you can build a growth mindset and increase your capacity for discomfort..  [22:11] How does your understanding of nerves affect your experience? Trevor points out the problem with toxic positivity, and explains in great detail how you can make room and process difficult human emotions. [24:54] Psychological safety is “The feeling that I can be myself, take risks, and ask questions”. It’s also the key to great teams (and the science backs it up). When you don’t feel psychologically safe in a group, the learning centers of your brain shut down, and you’re less likely to engage in learning behaviors.  [29:58] What can a middle school “anti-talent show” teach us about psychological safety? Trevor shares his experience to illustrate his belief that modeling behaviors of vulnerability and bravery and failure builds safety.  [33:03] Trevor talks about his audiobook (linked above) which includes guest voices and sound effects to give the listener an immersive learning experience.  [38:21] We all want to be the best, right? But Trevor asks the question, “Do you really need to be a master at something for it to have a massive effect on others?” Trevor makes his case for settling for “B+ work” and talks about how he uses storytelling as a cornerstone of teaching. [44:55] Trevor speaks vulnerably about what it was like to be diagnosed with cancer and what he learned during and after the experience. [52:16] Lindsey and Trevor wrap up their episode with actionable ways to grow your mindset and be more intentional about learning. Trevor believes in creating small, sustainable routines to create long-term change and growth.   RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast! 377 |The Power of Negative Visualization

376 | How to Find Joy (and Why It Matters)

I’m sitting on my office floor. Pregnant. In the middle of a construction zone. And in all the chaos, what I really want to talk about today is JOY.  Any college athlete can tell you that sometimes the team just needs a break. Maybe you’re all burnt out after a long tournament, maybe you’re in the middle of a losing streak, maybe you’re about to go into finals week.  When my team needed a break the most, you know what my coach would do? He wouldn’t cancel practice. He wouldn’t give us an easy practice. He would have us play indoor soccer (and he’d play it with us).  Let me remind you that this was my BASKETBALL coach.  And you know what? The simple act of doing an activity that we were all pretty bad at changed EVERYTHING. These indoor soccer practices were so much fun. The room would be filled with laughter, we would be playful, joyful, and totally lose track of time. We would let go of our egos and try to bounce the ball off our coaches head.   And guess what? The next day at practice would be so much lighter.  Which brings me to my big question today: How are you carving out space for joy in your life?  As competitive athletes, we are hard workers. It’s second nature to us to put in the time, put our heads down, and grind. But this type of mindset can have diminishing returns. Sometimes, the answer isn’t to work harder. Sometimes the answer is to invite joy, fun, and playfulness back into your life. Today’s extended episode will give you real-life, actionable tips to help you pursue joy. 373 | Guest Interview: James Leath

Today on the podcast, I’m chatting all things mindset with a leadership development coach, author, mental performance expert, and your next favorite Instagram follow, James Leath! James and I, in many ways, grew up in the mental training world together (since, ya know, before it was cool). And as much as he is a colleague, he is also a friend and an inspiration to me and anyone in his path.  A lifelong student (in and out of the classroom), James has a Bachelors in Communication, a Masters in Performance Psychology, and almost 20 years of coaching experience. He has worked for companies like IMG Academy, USA Swimming, Positive Coaching Alliance, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Chicago Bulls organization. As you’ll see in our episode, James is a captivating keynote speaker, a true gift to every team and individual he coaches, and an endless source of knowledge regarding sports psychology. And through his many lives as a coach, an actor, and an entrepreneur, James ties all his success back to his mindset. Throughout the episode, James is a natural teacher and visionary, effortlessly sharing hard-hitting stories and metaphors that beautifully illustrate themes like integrity and perspective, and other topics that are often hard to pin down. What makes James such an amazing guest on this episode is the fact that he lives what he teaches, and he creates everything with intention and follow-through. He is equal parts inspiring as he is witty and entertaining. With an infectious attitude that will leave you absolutely pumped up and ready to run through a brick wall, this episode is one you won’t want to miss.  Website: www.jamesleath.com Instagram: @James Leath Here’s a glance at this episode: [4:40] James opens the episode by sharing how he brings mental training to athletes today in a plug-and-play, intentional format.  [9:13] Lindsey asks the question, “What advice would you give a coach who wants to start mental training today?” James believes time doesn’t need to be a barrier; instead, he believes you just need to carve out space for athletes.  James shares one of his favorite analogies for defining integrity, and discusses the unique challenges facing athletes today.  [13:38] What can the kids game, Zip, Zap, Zop teach us about failure? James reminisces about two exercises he taught his team that helped them lean into silliness and play without fear of failure. As he puts it, “If we’re playing a game and we’re having fun, the winning takes care of itself”. [19:19] What is James focusing on right now, and what does mindset have to do with it? James shares all about his newest book, inspired by the children’s tale, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, (only, written from the perspective of the wolf.)  [25:05] James shares what’s on his reading list (hint: you probably wrote a book report about it), and tells an offbeat tale about how Jillian Michaels changed his life. [30:15] Doing the work isn’t easy; it takes, energy, time, space, and intention. And when it comes to holding space for athletes, James and Lindsey acknowledge that it’s messy. Oftentimes, holding space for athletes means going against your high-performance, action-oriented instincts.  [38:05] As a coach, you have to think about your athlete’s experience and remember that, however trivial their pressure, disappointment, or stress might seem, it’s valid. James believes that Mr. Rogers’ lived out this example of empathy beautifully. [41:30] James ties his cold plunge practice to deep mindset work. He explains how he uses positive self-talk and body language to influence his body’s experience.  [44:02] Lindsey and James wrap up their episode by disucussing the psychological power of storytelling. 370 | Why Look at Your Why?

(TW: Cursing) Who in their right mind jumps into a freezing cold lake in the middle of March?  *She asks, soaked in lake water and shivering through her teeth*  The short answer? Because it’s brave. And because doing brave things reminds us that we are strong.  This week in The Mindset Coach Academy, we all made a commitment to do something that scares the s*** out of us. Some coaches chose to sing karaoke, join a dating app, sign up for an improv class, or have a difficult conversation with a loved one. I chose to run into a 43° lake.  As humans, we are wired to run from fear. It’s our survival instinct at it’s finest! But there is real, physical danger, like fighting off a bear or doing something stupid on a skateboard, and there is perceived danger, like asking someone on a date, having stage fright, or cold water. And your brain doesn’t really know how to distinguish one from the other.  That’s why exercises in bravery are so important. When we do brave things, we practice overriding our natural fear instincts. And all of this creates a dramatic ripple effect throughout our entire lives.  Today’s extended episode will give you real-life, actionable tips to help you run towards fear.  Listen to the full episode for: The best time to do something scary Tips to help you choose your brave activity (+ the ultimate reward) What happens in your brain when you do something scary 5 actionable steps to help you run towards fear   RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast! 367 | Guest Interview - Kerri Walsh Jennings

You might recognize my highly esteemed guest today as one half of what was once called “the greatest beach volleyball team of all time” With three (yes THREE) Olympic gold medals and one Olympic bronze medal to her name, Kerri Walsh Jennings is a Beach Volleyball legend and a force to be reckoned with.  What makes Kerri such an amazing guest on this podcast is the fact that she truly lives what she teaches. Not only is it evident on the scoreboard, it permeates every part of her life, on and off the court.  Juggling her elite career with being a wife and a mother of three, Kerri shares deep, internal wisdom about the importance of choice, cultivating joy, and what it takes to earn the mindset of a champion. She is vulnerable, honest, eloquent, and an endless fountain of wisdom for all things sports and motherhood.  Through commentary about Mikaela Shiffrin at the 2022 Winter Olympics, stories of family and coaching her son through a loss, and awesome quotes that somehow come to her at the perfect time every time, Kerri proves time and time again that she is a gifted storyteller and a natural teacher.  This interview is one I know I will return to time and time again.  About Platform 1440: P1440 was founded by Kerri Walsh Jennings and her husband (and fellow Beach Volleyball legend), Casey Jennings to engage, equip, and encourage beach volleyball athletes to pursue their dreams. P1440 gives athletes direct opportunities to compete and grow alongside a dedicated community of high performers and big dreamers.  Learn more about P1440: https://www.p1440.com/ Follow them on Instagram: @platform1440 Here’s a glance at this episode:   [4:24] Lindsey and Kerri discuss the fallacy of perfectionism and Kerri’s relationship with failure through her younger years. She discusses her crushing disappointment at Rio and what it took to push through it.   [9:21] “Our job is to show up and do our best.” Kerri relates her experience at Rio to Olympic Alpine Skiier, Mikaela Shiffrin, and encourages athletes like her to reframe the way they think about failure.   [12:54] What does the phrase “Play so hard to win that it hurts so bad to lose” mean to an Olympian?  [16:06] Purpose and self-love through the ups and downs are essential to being a successful athlete and happy human. In Kerri’s words, “If you don’t love yourself because you’re in a funk right now, you’re literally playing for the other team; you’re fighting against yourself.”  [17:53] Quoting Andrew Huberman, Kerri insists we need to be having conversations with children about the power we have within to create our outside environment. And we have to understand that greatness takes time.   [19:39] Not unlike the lion and the gazelle, how we interpret stress actually impacts how our bodies respond to it.   [24:44] Kerri remembers a conversation with her Sports Psychologist that changed everything.  In summary, the words you choose MATTER because every word you speak is MOMENTUM.   [30:39] What does it look like to be an Olympic athlete and a mother of three? Kerri’s vulnerable answer includes an acknowledgment that It’s messy.   [38:04] “If you’re committed, you have to commit through the good times and the hard times…” Kerri describes her complex pursuit of greatness and her commitment to her purpose, as an athlete, a wife, and a mother.   [45:30] Kerri describes a few surprising ways in which becoming a mother helped her in her career. She makes a case for defining your life pillars and filtering your actions accordingly.   [50:11] Kerry shares a relatable story about coaching her son through a big loss. She reminds him, “The truth of who you are is unafraid”. [55:42] Lindsey and Kerri wrap up their episode by outlining Kerri’s mental training routine - on and off game days. From sleep, to cold plunging, to journaling, to talking it out, being where your feet are, and choosing what feels good, Kerri believes in creating sustainable routines that last a lifetime and cultivate joy.  RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast! 365 | Self-Blame vs Self-Compassion

Are you carrying the weight of self-blame? Lindsey launches today's Mental Monday with a quick mindset check-in. A key characteristic of athletes and high performers is HIGH STANDARDS. These are the same high standards that fuel late workouts, final sprints to the finish, and fierce competitiveness. But the dark side of high standards is often shame. Shame when you miss a shot, don't make the starting lineup, or let down the team. But what if it didn't have to be this way? What if you could have high standards without shame? Without beating yourself up when you fail? Enjoy this Mental Monday! 364 | How to Play Without a Scoreboard

The hardest part of real life is not having a scoreboard. This truth hits athletes hard. Because unlike in sports, in the REAL world, feedback isn’t always at your fingertips. It’s sort of like playing a game and not knowing until you’re winning or losing until the buzzer. Whether you’re starting a business and trying to get your first client, starting a new workout plan, interviewing for a new job, or throwing yourself into the dating game, you often don’t know how close you are to success until it happens. And, truth be told, so many people quit right before that big reward hits. Putting yourself out there and really hustling toward your goal is hard. And when all you hear is crickets, it’s just human nature to want to pull back or retreat altogether. Today’s extended episode will give you real-life, actionable tips to help you keep going and see the path forward… even when you don’t have a scoreboard. 361 | Guest Interview: Stacey Dales

Our very special guest today is Stacey Dales!  Stacey has an impressive sports resume, playing for the Canadian National Team in the Olympics and earning All-American status at Oklahoma. Collecting all the awards along the way, she was drafted 3rd into the WNBA and went on to expand her repertoire as a reporter for ESPN. This all-around powerhouse is currently killing it as a reporter for the NFL network. In addition to her iconic career in sports, Stacey leads with humor and kindness (I’ll give her a pass for a little game-time trash-talk). Although we met as opponents, I have always looked up to Stacey. She’s had her eye on the prize since I’ve known her and bleeds integrity into everything she does, making her an inspiration to myself and so many others. As a prominent sports reporter, this woman is paving the way for future generations of female game players and reporters, and I truly can’t think of a better role model.  From start to finish, Stacey’s interview is full of tough-love nuggets of wisdom, honest reflections, and refreshing humility. To have the opportunity to turn the tables on an expert interviewer and put her in the hotseat was an absolute pleasure. You can follow Stacey on IG @stacydales and watch her kick butt as a reporter for the NFL Network!  Here’s a glance at this episode: [0:28] Lindsey introduces Stacey Dales, former Olympian and current sideline reporter for the NFL [6:04] “I believe that champions are made when nobody’s watching” and “confidence comes from demonstrated ability”. Stacey shares what both of these phrases mean to her and how her mindset training as an athlete informs her career today.  [8:18] Stacey describes how she’s learned to embrace fear and shares her process for preparing her mind for high-pressure assignments. [11:30] What’s an NFL reporter’s mental training routine like? From physical workouts, to memory hacks, and an intricate storytelling ritual, Stacey lets us in on her secrets to success. [14:25] We all self-sabotage. It’s human nature. But once you have awareness around all the ways you self-sabotage, you reclaim your power.  [16:30] You can both expect greatness and expect that failure will happen. Learning to live with human imperfections and high expectations isn’t always easy, but learning to see your imperfections with grace can fuel greatness.  [20:25] Stacey makes a case for simplicity; i.e. creating guidelines and routines that reflect your natural strengths and support the success you want to see in your life.  [22:53] What are the most joyful moments of Stacey’s job? Her vulnerable answer includes the very real responsibility of telling other people’s stories and the pride she feels for being a woman in sports today. [25:40] Lindsey and Stacey chat about kindness, putting in the work, and always delivering early. And wrap up their episode by discussing Stacey’s next steps in work and life and the importance of self-grace.   RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast! 358 | Why You Need a Coach

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Mindset Coach Academy Applications Open Feb 16th! Here’s the link to learn more and apply: https://www.positiveperformancetraining.com/MCACertification As high performers, many of us fool ourselves into thinking we can achieve our goals just by gritting our teeth and getting to work. We like hard work, It makes us feel like we’re earning our success. But that ‘no pain, no gain’ mentality often causes us to make things much harder than they need to be. We overestimate the importance of hard work, and we underestimate the cost of figuring out the ‘how’. It’s like showing up to the gym without a planned workout. We spend half our time wasting valuable energy just trying to figure out what to do. But the truth is, when you rely on hard work alone without a roadmap, you make every mistake in the book and burn through your initial momentum. You get discouraged and blame yourself when it doesn’t pan out the way you hoped. But your work ethic isn’t the problem. The problem is that you haven’t allowed yourself to ask for help. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Not allowing yourself to get a coach or a guide can be a significant sign that you’re self-sabotaging. Taking shortcuts, asking for help, and finding resources to support you does not invalidate your hard work. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy. It means you understand that if you want to achieve big goals, you’re better off doing it with support. Let someone else provide your roadmap so you can show up and work hard at what matters the most. So you can save time, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and gain confidence, momentum, and resilience. Break the cycle now, and get yourself a coach! 355 | Guest Interview: Courtney Thompson

When I locked down an interview with Courtney Thompson, I might as well have taken home the gold. Not only is Courtney a 2-time Olympic medalist with a professional resume that goes on for miles, Courtney is an advocate for mental training, and credits mindset work for a lot of her success, on and off the court. A champion on multiple levels, Courtney is living proof of the power of mental training, and has dedicated her life to giving back to the sports world and making real, meaningful change in her athletes. She’s a fountain of wisdom and a total badass. In this episode, Courtney talks vulnerably about human things like self-doubt and imperfection, even at the elite level. She talks about how she cultivates confidence and inner wisdom, and shares her experience coaching a new generation of college athletes at Stanford University. She ends the episode with an actionable mental training nugget: The exact mental exercise she practices to help her let go of the uncontrollables. It’s not every day you get to be coached by an Olympian. Through stories of how she practiced mental training before she even knew what it was, to a comical anecdote about getting the yips in front of her athletes, Courtney is equal parts entertaining and inspirational. From start to finish, my interview with THE Courtney Thompson was an absolute delight. And I can say with confidence that there’s something in this episode for everyone. Let’s dive in! Here’s a glance at this episode: [0:00] Lindsey introduces her first guest on the podcast, two-time Olympian, Courtney Thompson! [4:06] When Courtney joined the Olympic team, she was taught, “There are 3 things you can train as a human, your body, your craft, and your mind.” [6:50] Although the benefits of mental training reverberate through your whole life, you still have to train and retrain your mind in every context; in and out of sports. [9:06] Before she learned mental training, Courtney often used daily habits and superstition to try to recreate the mental magic she felt on the days when everything just flowed. [13:01] Why responding positively to failure doesn’t make you a worse athlete, it makes you a better one, according to Courtney. [14:46] Courtney describes her ‘aha moment’ when she decided to change what she was doing and start training her mind. [17:51] What’s an Olympian’s mental training routine like? Courtney shares the details; now, and back when she was a competitive athlete. [20:09] Courtney shares the very mental training exercise she practiced as a pro athlete to help her let go of the un-controllables before she stepped on the court. [26:22] Why front-loading mental skills is a game-changer because you can’t always “think your way out of” your fight or flight response. [30:09] Courtney shares the way she now approaches in-the-moment mental training as a coach with her athletes. [33:43] Lindsey asks, “How do you prepare yourself to be successful?” Courtney responds with a discussion about her relationship with meditation and the inner wisdom it cultivates. [36:51] Courtney shares the hard-hitting questions she asks her athletes to help them be more aware of their internal thoughts, self-talk, and mindset. [40:56] We are all in the pursuit of being our best, and mindset work is a continual practice. Part of being a coach is going through feelings of pressure, failure, resistance, and self-doubt; that part never goes away. [48:48] Why is it important to be vulnerable as a coach? It takes a lot of confidence to admit that we’re scared, but there’s not an athlete in the world that hasn’t felt that way. [51:06] Courtney shares the ONE THING she would tell someone who was just starting their mental training journey. [54:31] Lindsey and Courtney wrap up the episode by discussing how Courtney hopes to grow her mindset in 2022, including one (semi-surprising) mindfulness practice rooted in buddhism.   RATE, REVIEW, & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Lindsey’s straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.” <– If that sounds like you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast!
