Women in the corporate world are often told that they have to put their work before everything else in order to be successful or in order to climb the corporate ladder, they can't "be difficult." In today's episode of the Leading Lady podcast, I sat down with Susan Shingledecker to hear the incredible story of how she knew her worth and values and stood up for herself, even when it was uncomfortable. Ep 158158: Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's An Act of Bravery (Fan Favorite Replay)

Do you practice self-care? We hear all the time that self-care is so important. We are always encouraged to practice it with meditation, bubble baths, and walks. But the world and all of our expectations, responsibilities, and commitments can make any form of real self-care feel impossible. We have families and businesses and friends, and it's easy to prioritize ourselves last! In this episode of The Leading Lady Podcast, I'm sharing why self-care is actually an act of bravery and why you need to start making yourself a priority in your life for your own well-being. As high-achieving women, it's scary to take a step back when we need it because we don't want to let anyone down. That means that you have to say no and back out of commitments when you over-committed yourself, and it takes courage to admit to others that you need to prioritize your mental health. In a world where we are idolized for stretching ourselves too thin, being a part of hustle culture, and being seen as a woman that can do all the things, it is so easy for self-care to just fall off our radar. You can't light yourself on fire to keep others warm. Self-care isn't selfish, it's a necessity. Tune in to hear more about why practicing self-care is an act of bravery and how to start making it a priority. Ep 157157: Letting Go of Things That No Longer Serve You

Why is it so hard to let go of things, even when you know they are no longer serving you? I think we've all experienced holding onto something for longer than we needed to, so why do we do it? In this episode of the Leading Lady podcast, I'm uncovering the truth about why it can be so hard to let go of things in your business and why you need to do it anyway. If you've experienced this, I want you to know that you're not alone. I just went through this in my own business and I've spoken to so many other business owners who have been through it too. That's how I know we need to talk about it. Topics covered in this episode include: Why we confuse signs that we need to let go of something as signs of failure What causes us to hold on tighter when we should be letting go How to know if it's time to let go of something in your business If you're holding onto something that you know you need to let go of, this is a judgment-free place to get started. Ep 151151: Behind the Scenes of My VIP Strategy Days (with Liz Murphy)

When you're planning in your business, do you try to tune everything else out, or do you let all the other areas of your life inform what you want for your business? In this episode, my dear friend and fellow ambassador Liz Murphy is taking over and we're switching seats. She's here to interview me and pick my brain about my VIP Strategy Day and what really goes into strategically planning a business. The main question that I'm answering is: why do we need to look at every area of our lives in order to effectively strategically plan our businesses? I believe that you need to be looking at and talking about yourself as a woman, human, wife, friend, and all the other titles that are important to you before you can show up as your best self as a business owner. Ep 146146: Is 2023 The Year You Invest in Coaching?

It's officially 2023! I can't believe the new year is finally here. Welcome back! To kick off this year, I want to use this episode of Leading Lady to discuss how to know when it's time to invest in coaching. I work with clients in several different ways. There's usually a common theme for when people reach out to me. The first is someone new to business and they want to get set up for success so that they can work smarter, not harder. They want guidance so that they can get a jump start on building their business with confidence and ease. The second type of person that reaches out to me is generally an established business. They've been in business for a while and they're really good at what they do. They're so successful and now their business has taken over their life. So they find themselves struggling with work-life balance, boundaries, and priority management. They feel like their business owns them. Furthermore, I work with people in a group coaching capacity and through the Annapolis Collective. So how do you know if it's time for you to invest in coaching? I'm often surprised at how women will put off investing in themselves. When you invest in coaching, you are investing in yourself. It pays off in so many ways. Tune in to learn more about how I work with business owners and how to know if you should make 2023 the year you take the leap and invest in yourself with coaching. Ep 145145: Know Your Worth

As you'll hear in the episode, it left me pretty stunned for a moment, but I'm really proud of how I handled it, and I want to share that with you. Want to know how I handled it so well? Because I know my own worth and I'm confident in what I bring to the table. That's what I want for you too! Ep 140140: How to Decide Whether To Invest Your Time Or Money Into Your Business

How do you know what to invest in your business, when to invest it, and the order in which you should be investing? This question comes up a lot in my Masterclass group and my individual clients, and it is a good question. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, it costs money to make money. You have to invest in your business in order to build your business. In this episode of Leading Lady, I'm sharing how to know when to invest in your business and what you should invest in. Ep 139139: How to Know if a Financial Planner is Right For You with Bridget Borel

Having an understanding of finances is such an important skill and tool that women need to truly be leaders in their lives. We all have blind spots, but working with a financial planner could help us avoid financial issues that we might not even know existed. In this episode of Leading Lady, I sat down with Bridget Borel to talk more about finances and how women can start living and spending in accordance with their values and find financial wellness. Bridget always says that money isn't math, and math isn't money. Financial decisions come in the context of our lives – events and relationships that shape who we are and how we live. She is driven to connect her clients with the resources they need to meet their goals and dreams. Her greatest joy is working with women of leadership, ambition, and mission. That could mean a retired public servant, an entrepreneurial scientist balancing the needs of her business and her family, or a Gold Star widow running a non-profit to help other grieving families. These women have a purpose, and she is privileged to help them live out that purpose. She came to the financial industry through work in insurance as well as research for a wealth management firm. As a fee-only financial planner, she's in the best position she can be to help clients solve their own financial puzzles. She holds a BS from Tulane University and lives in Annapolis with her three children. Her free time is filled with CrossFit, stand-up paddle boarding, cooking, and live music. Ep 138138: What You Need to Know if You're Thinking About Publishing Your Book, with Hannah Kates

Let's talk about publishing. For any book, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes to put those books in the hands of the readers. I got a firsthand look at it while I was working on publishing my book, Take the Lead. Today on Leading Lady, I sat down with Hannah Kates, the CEO and chief editor at Lofthouse Publishing. She is my editor and dear friend and the whole reason that my book, Take The Lead, even made it out into the world. Hannah is passionate about empowering others with publishing in an ethical way. There's a huge need for better publishing and she is doing what she can to improve it as much as possible. There's an impact that needs to be made with publishing. We need to stop looking at books as the product. The product is so much more than that. At Lofthouse Publishing, they strive to publish books that you don't just read and then put down. They publish books that take you on a journey and change you forever. Everyone has a story, and your story is valid. Ep 137137: How to Improve Your Body Image Despite Toxic Diet Culture: A Podcast Takeover with Elizabeth Harris

How can you show up in business or life if your body, or more precisely, how you feel about your body, is holding you back? This is something that so many women struggle with. If you think this way, please know that you are not alone. It's really hard to be a human - especially a female - in the diet culture that we live in. Your body is most definitely not a problem. The problem is the toxic diet culture we all live in that tells us there's a right way or a wrong way to have a body or that promotes unrealistic, largely unattainable, and frankly, ever-changing body ideals. In this episode of Leading Lady, we are doing another podcast takeover with Leading Lady Ambassador Elizabeth Harris! She's a registered dietitian and intuitive eating counselor with a virtual nutrition practice. She empowers women to find peaceful solutions to food and nutrition without dieting or stressing about the scale with intuitive eating and body image healing. Your body is not a fashion statement. We may not be able to change the culture itself, but we can change how we react to it. Elizabeth explores how we can turn inward with science and self-compassion and weather the storm of diet culture. Tune in to learn more about how to do it! Ep 136136: How To Become More Resilient and View Nutrition Through The Lens of Self Care: A Podcast Takeover with Elizabeth Harris

We all need a hearty helping of resiliency when it comes to food, nutrition, and body image. The truth is, we live in a toxic diet culture where we are inundated with messages telling us our bodies aren't good enough or that we are projects that need to be fixed. We are constantly confronted with unrealistic body ideals and endlessly told that we need to lose weight in order to be healthier and happier or to feel more comfortable and confident. All of this messaging can make healthy eating overly complicated, stressful, anxiety-inducing, or guilt-inducing. This can make us mistrust our bodies. It's no wonder that we are having a hard time feeling resilient when it comes to our food and eating. Ep 135135: How To Stop Food Policing Thoughts and Make Better Health Decisions: A Podcast Takeover with Elizabeth Harris

Have you ever felt guilty for eating something that you thought you shouldn't? Or do you ever think things like, "I can't have sweets, they're bad for me," or, "I shouldn't have carbs because they'll make me gain weight?" In intuitive eating, we call these the food police. They're essentially these thoughts that we all have swirling in our heads about what we're supposed to eat. It's like our own inner judge and jury that tell us whether the food we are eating is good or bad. Have you ever wondered where exactly they came from? The truth is that a vast majority of the time, they come from diet culture and they are not helping us! They come straight from weight loss companies that are selling diets or meal plans or other people trying to make money off of us. Elizabeth is diving into the topic of food police and "shoulding" all over your food choices. We are human and there is so much more to our health and well-being than the food we eat or how much we exercise. Ep 133133: How to Let Go of Fear and Be Brave with Your Business

It's no secret that running a business can be scary. You grow a business, put yourself out there, and depend on other people. It can be overwhelming at times and feel impossible to run your business without fear. Now, I don't like the term fearless. In fact, I don't think that we can be fearless. It's a very real emotion and there is no denying that. However, running our business out of fear can seriously derail us. It can stop us from running our business in alignment with our core mission, vision, and values. I've seen my share of struggles with my businesses in the last couple of years. I know how easy it is to let fear drive your decisions in your business and I've had to take a step back and reevaluate. As business owners, it's our responsibility to set the mission, vision, and values of our organization and hold people accountable, and you can't do that from a place of fear. Your quality and standards will suffer and you'll compromise the integrity of your business. Tune in to learn more about how to let go of that fear and start bravely leading your business! Ep 132132: How to Keep Your Business Running Even When You Aren't There

Do you have systems in place in your business? Life happens sometimes, and as business owners it can be difficult to maintain normal business operations when things come up. In this episode of Leading Lady, I'm sharing why we need to have systems and processes, especially when we're down. If you have been following me, you probably know that July and August were very busy for me and I really needed to step away and take a pause from all things business related. Having said that, it doesn't mean that my business stopped. As high-achieving women, entrepreneurs, business owners, and leaders of organizations, we know that we can't just bring everything to a screeching halt. Things have to keep moving, even without us. Because of my systems and processes, I was able to take a step back when I needed to. My team knew what to do, even without me there. Things continued to run and I was able to get the rest I needed to keep operating at my best. Tune in to learn more about the systems and processes you need to have in place so that you can take the time off when you need it without slowing down your business progress. Ep 131131: Rejection Does Not Define You; Lessons Learned From Sorority Recruitment

In this episode of Leading Lady, I want to share my experience with my daughter who recently went through sorority recruitment, or rush, as a freshman in college. I'm sharing my perspective on this topic because recently, someone posted in the Leading Lady Facebook group that she had been hearing horror stories and wanted perspective on it because her daughter was thinking about rushing. People feel pretty passionately about sororities. Some feel it's archaic and toxic, some think it's a wonderful experience and really appreciate the community and the opportunities that being in a sorority presents. My experience with this whole process was a bit of a culture shock, to be honest. However, it's important to remember that everyone's experience is unique to them. There is no right or wrong blanket statement when it comes to sororities. My daughter and I both learned a lot from this experience. One of the biggest takeaways from this is that no one likes rejection, but it is a very real part of life. As much as rejection hurts, we have to recognize that it's not our place to determine if we are the right fit for someone else. We should instead focus on looking for situations where we are wanted, celebrated, and accepted. Tune in to learn more about our experience with the sorority recruitment process and what we learned from rejection. Ep 130130: The Six Essential Pieces You Need in Your Presentations or Workshops

Does your audience understand your business and how you serve them? In today's episode of Leading Lady, I'm sharing how to structure your presentations and workshops in a clear and concise way so that your audience knows who you are, who you serve, how you serve, and why they need you. I recently started a program called the Annapolis Collective. It's a networking and education group hosted in my new office and event space. One of the bonuses of being a member of the collective is that members can use the space to host their own presentations and workshops for their audience. With this opportunity, I was getting a lot of women coming to me asking how they can build a workshop or the best way to present their businesses at these meetings in a non-salesy or corny way. When you're mapping out your presentations, workshops, and even just the conversations you're having, it's really important that you identify and answer all of the fundamental questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how so that you can truly inspire people to work with you. Tune in to learn more about how to turn these elements into a presentation or workshop that converts. Ep 128128: Why It's OK to Pause

Have you been feeling the need to rest and recharge? If you are a long-time listener, you've probably noticed that over the last several weeks, I have had several replay episodes airing on the podcast with a few new episodes sprinkled in here and there. After taking a minute to pause and recharge, I am back now and energized to bring you all some new stuff. To be honest, this summer was a little hectic. I had kids going through major transitions to things like high school and college and it really took up a lot of emotional and mental bandwidth. So I had to give myself a little space and grace during that time and get some much-needed self-care so that I could come back as my best self. In this week's episode of Leading Lady, I'm diving into the topic of self-care and pausing when you need to. It's brave to take a step back to rest and recharge when you need to, and more people need to make it a priority. You have to take care of yourself. Suppressing your feelings, faking it until you make it, or engaging in toxic positivity when you just aren't feeling it just isn't good for you. When you put forth the effort and acknowledge and validate your needs, you will see a difference in your life. Sometimes you need to just address the ache in your heart, and give yourself time to recover so that when you do come back, you're coming back as your best self. Tune in to learn how to do it. Ep 127127: Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's An Act of Bravery

Do you practice self-care? We hear all the time that self-care is so important. We are always encouraged to practice it with meditation, bubble baths, and walks. But the world and all of our expectations, responsibilities, and commitments can make any form of real self-care feel impossible. We have families and businesses and friends, and it's easy to prioritize ourselves last. Ep 125125: Don't Call Me a Mompreneur

Are you a working mom? In today's episode of Leading Lady, I'm talking about the unique challenges and circumstances I have faced as a working mom myself. Before you think that this episode is about how much harder it is being a working mom than it is for other women in business, I want to say that I have tried very hard not to tie up my identity in motherhood. I believe that we are unique and whole just as women alone. Our roles as moms and entrepreneurs are just other facets of us. This is why I am not a fan of words like mompreneur and mom boss. They get under my skin because my husband has never been called a dadpreneur or a dad boss. In general, men don't lead with parenthood as their identifier. I'm not going to debate who has it harder in this episode, glorify working moms, or minimize women building careers without children. The purpose of this episode is simply to share that yes, I am a mom, I do run my own businesses alongside raising my family, and it does present some challenges. If you are a mom and you want to feel validated, seen, heard, or just get some tips on how to balance it all, make sure to tune in to this episode. Ep 124124: How Exercise Can Empower You with Tara De Leon: A Fan Favorite Replay

Prioritizing exercise isn't easy especially when it is viewed as a punishment rather than a celebration. Do you agree? Sometimes we forget about all of the things that our bodies are capable of because we are so caught up in a meal that we ate, fitting into a certain size, or wishing we had a toned stomach. One thing I have learned over the years is that this mindset does not allow anyone to see their body for what it is - powerful, beautiful, and worth celebrating. Whether you enjoy 20-minute walks or lifting heavy weights, moving your body should always be empowering. In this episode, I am chatting with my personal trainer Tara De Leon about the importance of exercise - no matter how you choose to move your body. This is one of the most listened-to episodes ever on the podcast, so I decided it was time to bring it back—especially because this message is worth repeating. Tara De Leon has over 18 years of experience in the fitness industry. She has done everything from teaching water aerobics to personal training to even being a collegiate strength coach. As the Personal Training Coordinator at Edgewater Fitness, Tara helps women be confident and badass by teaching them to lift heavy weights. Outside of the gym, Tara loves to spend time with her husband Marcus, adorable newborn baby boy, Maverick, and Aussie pup, Chula. Whether this will be your first time hearing this episode or you have heard it before, I want you to remember this important lesson from it: find what works for you and give yourself grace. Ep 122122: 6 Key Components of a Successful L.E.A.D.E.R.

What does it take to be a leader? If you have been following me for a while, you know that I always say "take the lead, and the rest will follow." If you have air in your lungs, you are a leader. But how do you take the lead in your life? In this episode of Leading Lady, I am breaking down the word LEADER, and how I use that word in many areas of my coaching. In my business and leadership masterclass, the word "leader" is broken down into six different modules. My book, TAKE THE LEAD, also follows the acronym L.E.A.D.E.R.: Learner's mindset, Engagement, Authenticity, Dedication, Emotional Intelligence, and Resilience. I am breaking down what each of these means to me in my business and also giving you some tidbits so you can start thinking about how you are showing up as a leader in your life throughout this episode. It all starts with self-leadership. How are you leading yourself? Others? Your family? Your business? These are all incredibly important aspects of your life, and I want you to be able to show up and be the leader you have always wanted to be. Every letter and every aspect of the L.E.A.D.E.R. acronym is equally important. They all blend and work together to help you grow as a leader. Tune in to learn more about the six pieces of leadership and how they can help you step into the leadership role in your life. Ep 120120: How To Grow Your Business By Working Smarter, Not Harder

When you first start your business, it's so exciting! You have so much passion for your work, so the beginning phase is just magical, isn't it? Sometimes, though, we end up in denial about how much work has to be done. With any business, there are going to be things that just aren't fun and that you don't love to do. Getting the not-so-fun things done at the start will make your work easier because you will have the structure, discipline, and procedures in place that will keep everything running smoothly. By doing the hard work now, you can do the smart work going forward in your business. In this episode of Leading Lady, I'm sharing my top tips for working smarter so that you can grow and scale your business without working harder. It's hard to implement a work-life balance once your business is up and running, but by creating boundaries for how you're going to work and how you're going to structure your business in a way that works for your life and then honoring that, you are setting yourself up for success down the road as your business grows. Tune in to learn about these tips and so much more! Ep 119119: How to Cultivate Healthy Relationships with Yourself and with Others with Samantha Heuwagen: A Fan Favorite Replay

Today's episode was such a fan favorite, I decided to bring it back because it was that good! Enjoy--- How can you love others without loving yourself first? The answer is simple: you can't! We have to have really solid foundations with ourselves in order to be able to articulate what our needs are with another person. My guest in this episode, Samantha Heuwagen, is here to talk to us all about this and how to cultivate healthy relationships with ourselves and with others. Samantha Heuwagen is a Latinx marriage and family therapist and best-selling author in the Metro Atlanta area. When not working with clients, she sparks discussion about mental health with the goal to spread awareness across the United States and beyond by challenging the popular discourse surrounding mental illness and making it more inclusive. We get into what the foundation of a healthy relationship consists of, why you need to love yourself first, how to define what your goals are for yourself and your relationships, what it means to be authentic in a relationship, and so much more. This was such an honest and empowering conversation and I got so much amazing feedback the first time this episode was aired, I knew I had to bring it back for another listen! Ep 118118: What You Should Know Before Hiring a Coach

Have you ever thought about hiring a business coach? I talk to so many women on discovery calls who are trying to decide if hiring a coach is the right move for them. The decision to hire a business coach or life coach is a big one, so you don't want to go into this decision without doing your research and knowing what exactly you need and what to look for. I am a firm believer that everyone needs a therapist and everyone needs a coach. These are two very different things that will help you in different areas of your life. In this episode of Leading Lady, I'm sharing everything you need to know before you hire your first coach. Not all coaching is equal, and I want you to have the best experience possible. Ep 117117: Tips for Scheduling Time off as a High-Achieving Business Owner

We all need a break sometimes. You may have noticed that I didn't release a new episode last week. While I don't plan to make a habit of that, it was much needed. Life has been full of a lot of transitions for my family lately and there has been a lot going on with my business, so I was at my max. With that said, in this week's episode of The Leading Lady Podcast, I am talking about the importance of taking a break. You don't need to wait for an opening to get a break or a "good time" to take a vacation, you can schedule these breaks or vacations into your life whenever you need them. I know it can seem impossible to do because, as entrepreneurs and high-achieving women, we are never away or cut off from our businesses, and we are the decision-makers so it's hard to step away like that, but what you need to do is plan ahead so that you can take a successful break. Tune in to learn more about my top tips for getting the rest and rejuvenation you need. Ep 116116: Does Your Branding Match Your Brand? with Lena Gosik-Wolfe

What does your branding say about you? Your brand is bigger than branding. It's so common for us to not see the flaws in what we have currently because we are so close to our businesses. This can make it hard to see from someone else's shoes, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Your brand is your unique story, but your branding is for your audience. In this episode of Leading Lady, I sat down with one of my Leading Lady ambassadors, Lena Gosik-Wolfe to talk about how you can create a brand that stands out and connects you with your audience. Lena of Lena Designs Studio is a dynamic designer and dot-connecting visionary who is able to bring high-level artistic strategy to brand design. As a brand strategist, she's helping female-owned online businesses all over the world make more money by crafting a unique, beautiful, purposeful design that elevates them beyond a business and into a true brand. When she's not serving her clients, you can find her spending time with her husband & rescue animals, or tending her succulent garden. When people see the passion and love for your business, it actually inspires them to work with you! You don't need to hide behind the computer or a brand that doesn't suit you. Your branding should represent you and your business in a way that makes you proud to show it off. Tune in today to learn more from Lena about how the perfect branding can impact your business! Ep 115115: How To Keep Your Business Going While Grieving

I'm going to be honest, this episode is a hard one. I haven't recorded anything in a few weeks because I have been grieving. Two weeks ago, I lost my 11-year-old English Setter, Millie. If you know me or have been following me for a while, you know that my dog was a huge part of my life. I've had her since she was 9 weeks old and she has pretty much been my shadow since day one. I never could have imagined that the grief of losing her would be this great. You guys know that it's always my goal to always show up in a real and authentic way, so I wanted to share this incredibly difficult story with you to show you where I have been the last couple of weeks. So in today's episode of Leading Lady, I wanted to share my best advice for continuing to move forward and work on your business when you are in the midst of grief. The only constant in life is that everything is forever moving and changing and every day is a gift. Each day may present new challenges that we didn't expect but we have to keep moving forward. Gratitude is a powerful tool that we should all be using more. It feels good, heals the heart, and fills the soul. It's so important that you allow yourself to be sad and feel that grief because you need it in order to move forward. Tune in to hear more about processing your grief in a way that still moves you forward in your business. Ep 114114: THINK: What This Acronym Means & Why You Should Be Using It Daily

How do you show up in the world? I have worked in the education realm for over 20 years and something that we teachers absolutely love is acronyms! We have one for everything. In this episode of Leading Lady, I am sharing with you one of my favorite acronyms ever because it has helped me so much, and I really think it will help you too. I have used it daily for the last several years, and it has made a true difference in my life. The acronym is THINK. With this acronym, I want you to think about how you show up in the world. How do you show up as a leader, as a business owner, as a woman, or as a mother? As high-achieving women, we have to use our voices in our leadership roles. Whether it's leading our family, our business, a boardroom, or just ourselves, use the THINK acronym and ask yourself if the things you're saying are aligned with how you want to show up. Tune in to hear what this acronym stands for, how it has helped me, ways to apply it to all aspects of your life, and how it can help you become the type of woman or leader that you have always wanted to be. Ep 113113: Why Saying YES to What You Don't Want Says NO to Your True Passions

Let's talk about the power of saying no. By that I mean sometimes when we say "no", we are actually saying "yes". Now I know what you may be thinking- no means no, right? I get that! By saying no to something, you are often saying yes to something else. In this week's episode of Leading Lady, I am diving into why saying no to what doesn't light you up means saying yes to the things that matter. Oftentimes when I am working with clients, setting boundaries, both personal and professional, is something that they really want to work on. They want to achieve the highly sought-after work-life balance and find more time for their passions, and they know that setting boundaries is the key to making that happen. Some people just struggle to say no to things that don't feel right for them. But when you say yes to that thing, what are you actually saying no to? Are you saying no to the time and freedom to do the things that really light you up and fuel your fire? In order to be your best, most authentic self, you have to prioritize things that align with your mission, vision, and values. That means being careful about what you say yes to so that you can prioritize the things that are truly important to you and your business. Tune in to this episode to learn more about why it is so important to prioritize the things that truly light you up and learn to say no to the things that don't.
