Oakland A's owner John Fisher has been taking a lot of flack for having such a low pay roll and trading away the team's best players. On today's episode I explore the role of owners and discuss what is exactly you want from your team's owner. To me it is very simple. An owner has a responsibility to put a good product on the field or court. John Fisher has done that. A's fans don't show up. The A's are near the bottom in attendance numbers every year, The die hard A's fans are very loyal, but there aren't enough of them. To me, Fisher has done his job. Ben Simmons has filed a grievance to challenge the $20 million in salary withheld by the 76ers. So a guy doesn't need to show up for work and when he does he goes through the motions and gets kicked out of practice by Doc Rivers. I actually announced a game in Des Moines, Iowa when Warner was playing in the Arena League for the Iowa Barnstormers. Obviously, nobody knew that they were watching a guy that would be come a Pro Football Hall Of Famer. It got me thinking about some of the other big time athletes I covered in my career. I talk about some of the big time hockey players I announced in college and then share a story about bartending for the New York Rangers one night in Rye, NY. Welcome to April which means the start of Major league Baseball. It also means the continuation of a rule that I hate. Once again. extra inning games will begin with a runner on 2nd base. I hated it when the rule was first implemented and I still hate it! How about a compromise? Play 3 or 4 innings of extra innings the conventional way and if still tied go to runner on 2nd. The 49ers are trying to put the best possible spin on their quarterback position, but bottom line, it is a tough position to be in. Everyone expected Jimmy Garoppolo to be traded by now, but shoulder surgery has derailed that for now. A year ago the 49ers gave up a ransom to move up in the draft so they could select Trey lance. This week at the league meetings in Florida we heard from GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan and they both tried putting the best foot forward on the situation. Regardless of how you feel about the situation, it is hard not see Lance starting in September. The 49ers have put themselves in the situation of sinking or swimming with Lance. Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid must have a completely different viewpoint of what it takes to live on than most of us. Yesterday he said this about Tyreke Hill who was traded to the Dolphins, "...he's a family man that has a few kids and he's got to be able to support them now and down the road, and this gives him an opportunity to do that." Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has generated a lot of controversy as a top swimmer Penn's women's team. On today's show I try and prevent both side of the controversy. I start off reading some excerpts from the Independent. Their story feels Thomas does not have an unfair advantage. Former Olympic champion, and transgender woman Caitlyn Jenner has been very critical of Thomas. I discuss that and get into common sense as it relates to this. Is this about common sense, or is it about science? Maybe a little of both? I read what I thought was an excellent column by Phil Mushnick of the New York Post regarding common sense on this issue. The Kings beat the pacers last night without De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. Playing against former teammates Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield for the first time, the Kings got a tip in with .02 remaining for the one point win. What made the game so intriguing is that the teams were separated by one loss in the loss column and ping pong balls are up for grabs. Add to the fact that Buddy turned the ball over with 14 seconds remaining and his team up one, well, you just can't make this stuff up! Kings fans have seen that before right? Zion Williamson of the Pelicans has yet to play a game this season due to a fractured foot. He has played in only 85 career games in three seasons. Yesterday he posted a five second video clip of him dunking on his Instagram page. Why? Who cares? I am supposed to be impressed that Williamson can throw the ball off the backboard and do a fancy dunk? I'm not impressed. I will be impressed when I seem him on the court in a real game. On Friday ESPN used their platform during the NCAA Women's tournament to protest what critics are calling ""Don't Say Gay" bill in Florida. I am so sick and tired of ESPN political crap down my throat. The announcers paused for two minutes of silence to support the LGBTQIA+ community. I don't want that on my live sporting events. I don't want politics mixed with sports. And this has nothing to do with my feelings towards this community. My motto is pretty simple. Life goes fast. Be happy! NBA player's are having trouble maintaining their cool against fans and their actions. Last week the Nets Kevin Durant told a fan to shut the f*%k up and sit down because the fane asked him to take over the game. Yesterday in Indianapolis Jusuf Nurkic of the Blazers was seen walking over to a fan after the game, taking the fan's phone and throwing it. Nurkic was in street clothes, but obviously something made him upset? Why not call team security? Why throw the fan's phone? Do the NBA players care how bad these acts look? I guess not! On this episode I give you my fondest memories of Arco Arena which opened in 1988. The first event I witnessed in that arena was the 1988 Ring magazine fight of the year. Tony Lopez beat Rocky Lockridge for his first world title. It was as good of an atmosphere that I've ever experienced at a sporting event. Opening night for the Kings was one of my favorite moments as well. I can't remember much about the game, but it was my second NBA telecast and I was in awe of the evening! In 1996 the Kings played their first ever playoff game at Arco Arena. The Kings had won game 2 in Seattle and the ovation the fans gave the Kings when they took the floor is my favorite Arco Arena memory. I've never seen anything like it. I also discuss April14, 2011 when I broke down on camera thinking it was the last game the Kings would play in Sacramento. Obviously, the last game ever played in that building in 2016 was very special as well. I was blessed to be a part of the history of Arco Arena and I hope you enjoy this podcast! Last night the Kings upset the Bulls and now have a record of 25-45. This team can't seem to win when they need to, and can't lose when they need to. At this point please don't screw up your draft position. To Coach Alvin gentry's credit and the players on the court they are trying to win, but shouldn't management step in and say hey let's start playing the youngsters more? Why screw up the season now? This weekend fans will have an opportunity to go to Arco arena one last time. The arena opened in November 1998. It was my first year of broadcasting for the Kings and that opening night was beyond special. I share some of my fondest memories from those early years. Today's episode features Mike Pereira from the NFL On Fox. We talked about the bad no call in the Super Bowl that resulted in a touchdown for the Bengals when Jalen Ramsey's face mask was clearly grabbed. Mike also discussed working with his colleagues Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Aikman left Fox to go to ESPN and Mike was in the booth with those guys a lot including the Super Bowl. I asked Mike about being on camera with over 100 million people watching. We had a great laugh on that one! The main topic of conversation though is officiating on the youth level and it was very interesting to hear Mike's reasons for officials quitting after one or two years. Mike started a foundation called Battlefields to Ballfields and he has done a great job giving some of our veterans a second career. Last night the Nets went into Philadelphia and embarrassed the 76ers. Ben Simmons didn't play, but was in attendance and got booed all night. James Harden did what he does a lot....disappear in big games. Harden was 3-17 and didn't make a two point basket. The NFL suspended Falcons WR Calvin Ridley for making parlay bets on NFL games including the Falcons. An NFL investigation found the bets occurred in November when Ridley was away from the team due to mental health issues. Games weren't affected from Ridley's bets, but bottom line is you can't have that! Players can not bet on their league and their teams. Period! Why are so many critical of the league's decision?
