Ep 214Powerful pauses

Ann Swanson teaches meditation to busy people with busy minds. She is the author of the bestselling book Science of Yoga, which has been translated into over 15 languages. Her new book, Meditation for the Real World, illuminates the fascinating science behind meditation with step-by-step practices to find peace in everyday life. However, Ann wasn’t a naturally “chill person,” and meditation didn’t come easy to her. Overcoming chronic pain and anxiety led her to India to study yoga, to China to explore tai chi, and, ultimately, to earn a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy. She says:I dealt with anxiety so extreme I’d pass out, chronic pain since my teens, and debilitating perfectionism. Listen, if I can meditate, anyone can. Now, I help busy people with busy minds meditate using science-backed practices that work. My first book, SCIENCE OF YOGA, has sold over half a million copies, and my second book was just released. I collaborated with a Harvard meditation researcher and a New York Times illustrator to write Meditation for the Real World. I'm excited to teach your audience how to cross meditation off their to-do list and, instead, integrate realistic practices into their lives! You don't have to sit in silence on the floor for 20 minutes a day; even one-minute meditations can make a surprising and immediate difference! Now, Ann blends cutting-edge research with ancient wisdom, resulting in realistic techniques you’ll find yourself integrating into your day! Ep 212The confidence gap

In Jerry Scarlato's own words:One thing I’ve struggled with on and off throughout my life is self-confidence. Which is ironic considering, from the outside looking in, I had a lot of the boxes checked to have enough confidence for anything. I grew up in an upper-middle-class family. I had good supporting parents. I was born with a ton of natural physical ability to help me excel in sports. I had enough brains in my head to get through school without much effort. And yet, my confidence was always a soft spot that kept me from pursuing and reaching my true potential. Of course, at the time I wouldn’t have pinpointed self-confidence as the problem. At the time I would have pointed to everything and everyone else around me. Either a Coach didn’t give me a fair chance. Or an injury kept me from getting better. Or my dad wouldn’t let me make my own decisions. Whatever excuse I could find to justify my shortcomings, I would use it. And it wasn’t until my early 30's that those beliefs and justifications really started to feel like bullshit. At that time, I had owned a fitness studio for about 4 years and had been married for the same amount of time. The fitness studio was growing enough for it to feel successful. And the marriage was comfortable enough to make it feel…well…comfortable. But things just didn’t feel right. I had run out of excuses as to why things weren’t continuing to improve and doing the hard work of introspection to see if something inside of me was holding me hostage. By the age of 39, which is where I am now, I had put enough pieces together and done enough internal reflection to realize that the life I was living was not my life at all. The reason, or at least a big reason, why I struggled with confidence when I was young and through to my mid-30s is because I wasn’t aligned with the person that I truly am, which wasn’t allowing me to pursue higher and higher levels of potential. In other words, I was trying so damn hard to make other people happy that I wasn’t being my true self. And because I wasn’t being my true self, I wasn’t able to level up my life in the way that I knew that I was capable. That year, 2023, I got divorced and left the fitness studio business, both of which had been part of my life for 10 years. The marriage was fine, but not flourishing because our values didn’t align and I was trying too hard to override mine to fit with hers. The business was good, but not empowering because it was in a poor geographical area and I had to be a different person to attract the right demographic. I had figured out that I was not giving my true self to the world and it was time to wipe the slate clean and start from the very beginning.Jerry and I discuss real stuff to help people fill their confidence gap and live the life destined for them. This is a wonderful conversation, not to be missed.More information about Jerry, click here.My website is www.andrewjobling.com.au

Ep 210The power of protein

I am blessed to have known Perry Venakis for almost 25 years, so far. When we met, he was just starting his personal training journey after a very interesting background as a mechanic, a farmer and then with a passion to help people with their health and well being. He turned his knowledge and experience to help body builders get positive results in a much more healthy and natural way, and had great success with many people he worked with. His journey led him to an intense interest in the role that nutrition played in body building, but also how it impacted every person and in every area of life. Perry works with many people to help them live optimal lives through eating simply, naturally and nutritionally to help them get results that seem to very complex. This interest led him, at the age of 55, to study a Masters degree in nutrition and then go on to start the Australia Academy of Raw Nutrition.Perry and I chat about some simple but powerful concepts. There is lots of catching up, banter, but some crucial conversation about the role of protein in the body, how to avoid sarcopenia, and how to eat to create optimal wellbeing. What you will learn will transform your eating habits and your life, if you take them on board and take action. He is a knowledgeable, passionate and entertaining man who I loved talking to. I know you will get a lot from this podcast, so please enjoy.Find out more about Perry and his N90 program, click hereMy website is www.andrewjobling.com.au

Ep 203Be a healer

Phyllis Leavitt has just written book called America in Therapy: A New Approach To Hope And Healing For A Nation In Crisis, in which she talks about the urgency to bring our whole country to therapy in a way never written about before. From years of experience as a client herself, and well over 30 years experience as a psychotherapist working extensively with individual and family dysfunction and abuse, she felt a deep calling to share all she has learned with the public and demonstrate how the principles of the best psychotherapy can be used to help heal a country of escalating hatred, divisiveness and violence. Trust me, this is not just a conversation about America only, it for every person in every country in the world. She speaks to all who fear for children and all future generations, who may feel hopeless or resigned or simply don't know what to do to help create a more loving and sustainable world. She brings a message of both urgency and hope that each one of us can be a healer, in language the layman can easily relate to and understand, through personal stories, client case studies, and professional expertise. Phyllis and I discuss many things that can help every person live a life of joy, meaning, and healing. Then through the choices we all make, how we can have a powerful and positive ripple effect on, not just healing a relationship, a family, a community, even a country, but the whole world. It is a big task, However, Phyllis and I, and hopefully you, are up for it. Madonna Santa is a trauma counselor, wellness coach, mentor and public speaker and runs an online platform focused on mental health and empowerment. She also hosts her podcast ‘Conversations with Madonna’, where she her guests from all over the world speak on all topics ranging from world events to mental, physical and spiritual health. She has had a 26 year career is community services, public speaking, running women’s groups and leadership programs, teaching in the tertiary sector and now runs her own counselling practice working with people who experience trauma, PTSD, narcissistic abuse and anxiety, and is about to write her first book. Her approach to therapy is different in that she works herself out of a job, not keeping you in therapy for years but using techniques she has learned in her studies and research on neuroplasticity, psychology and holistic energy work to facilitate you into ‘Creating the Life you Deserve’. Madonna has helped thousands of people shift trauma, no matter what background or situations they have been in. It has been her experience throughout her 26 years in the industry and also her own personal experiences, no matter what circumstances have created trauma, anxiety or dis-ease, with the right tools in your toolkit for life, you can thrive rather than survive.Madonna is living proof of her methods working, having been told at the age of 30 she would never walk again after the doctors who administered a spinal block during the delivery of her daughter made a mistake that resulted in her being incapacitated, experiencing chronic pain, fatigue and consequently being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, chronic migraines and a heart condition. This did not stop her from reaching her goals and creating the life she deserves. It propelled her into a journey of healing, understanding how the medical model of health, whilst helpful for acute illness, is far behind ancient wisdom and natural medicines, especially when it comes to women’s health. She discovered the true power of mind over matter, applied it to her life and lives a healthy and dynamic life and wants to share that with other’s so they too, can thrive rather than just survive through their lives. Having a background in behavioural studies, community development and psychology, Madonna researched how to use neuroplasticity and wonder words to bring her back to wellness and it is her life’s mission to help other’s do the same. Greg Elliott's journey has been fueled by an unyielding passion for unraveling the mysteries of human health and potential. Growing up in a very active and health-conscious family, the importance of being healthy was ingrained at an early age and was further developed by playing for high-performance programs in Canada and the US. He wanted to know how to gain an edge over everyone else, so his nights and weekends were filled with educating himself of how to be bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than his opponents. Those formative years weren't just about the sport; they ignited his fascination with the intricate science behind human performance. Through rigorous research and exploration, he unearthed the potential of non-invasive technologies to peer into the heart's complexities, a voyage that introduced me to the captivating realm of Heart Rate Variability (HRV).The unlikeliest of discoveries greeted him —HRV readings that transcended medical labels. Astonishingly, individuals of utmost discipline and success mirrored patterns akin to those burdened with chronic ailments. This paradox set him on a profound quest: to redefine the very essence of "Health". In his pursuit, he started to get a deeper understanding of human anatomy & physiology, applying this new skillset to clients. Ep 187Balancing stress

Kelly Myles and I go back many years and I consider her a wonderful friend. I am very grateful to have been with her on her journey to become an author and watch her courageously transition out of many decades in the hairdressing industry and into a coaching career that she is loving. Kelly is now having a powerful and profound impact on many lives through her coaching business. Not so surprising is how many of her clients are finding challenges when it comes to balancing stress in their lives. So, in this conversation we discuss it.I think it is fair to say, we all deal with stress on a daily basis. There is a negative connotation to the word stress, as we seem to perceive it as a bad thing, however, stress is required for any growth, achievement or change. The challe occurs when we fixate on the wrong things. When this happens, stress can very quickly turn into a health threatening, relationship compromising, creativity crushing, and life damaging thing. So, there must be balance.Kelly talks in detail about some very simple things we can all do to improve balance in life and when dealing with stress. We all want to use stress to propel us forward into a happy, successful, joyful and meaningful life, so the ideas Kelly suggests are powerful and critical. This is a wonderful conversation with Kelly that I enjoyed immensely and hope you do also, Find out more about Kelly here.My website is www.andrewjobling.com.au

Ep 180Role of love

Paul Zolman is the international bestselling author of the Role of Love, but the true author of love is God. In His wisdom, He placed us in a variety of circumstances that require us to find our way back to His pure love. So, what qualifies Paul to speak about love? His childhood experience was of the opposite of love, borne out of generations of abandonment, abuse and trauma. From that austere beginning, and the distaste it formed inside Paul, he searched for and eventually created a method that transformed his life from anger to loving everyone. Growing up in a family of abuse, physical touch became his preferred love style, only because of the regularity. He could almost count on it. It was consistent. He came to think that was the way to express love. But deep inside, he knew that was a twisted belief. Paul wanted a better life for himself, which is why he created a paradigm shift that works. In his book, you’ll find what helped him move from a childhood boot camp of abuse to being a person who loves everyone and can find good about anyone in any circumstance. The game he created off the back of the book, The Five Love Languages, by Dr Gary Chapman is literally a game-changer. It helped him, and helping many people around the world find the true role of love. This is a wonderful and essential conversation, that will inspire you, and transform you into a love language linguist, one roll of the die per day. She has owned and run training studios, worked as a personal trainer, Pilates instructor, and movement coach for nearly 20 years. Being an avid athlete that has a keen interest in triathlon, she understands the demands of the sport and how tough it can be to fit in the training required to be race-ready while working 9-5 and dealing with life’s commitments. From this, RPX Fitness Online was born.In recent years Naomi has had the opportunity to work with a number of movie stars helping them gain physical fitness, strength, and agility for their role.Naomi is passionate about teaching people to change how they move to create a strong and resilient physique and a life of healthy movement.SHE BELIEVES GOOD MOVEMENT IS ESSENTIALGood movement is essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced muscular structure in the body. Very commonly healthy, fit people end up with unwanted injuries that could have been prevented through understanding how their body moves, how it should move, and how to move it safely. Most people seek out a trainer for a strength program, or for weight loss. At RPX her first and foremost goal is injury reduction and prevention by teaching people how to train themselves correctly. Ep 173Lay down the oars

I was privileged to meet Bill Williamson in September 2019. At the time he was the senior pastor at a church in the beautiful town of Yakima, Washington, USA. Myself and Dr Allan Meyer were speaking at his church to a group of men. At that time Bill didn't know of my struggles, and I didn't know his. However, we were both 'straining at the oars' in life. As I was finishing my talk I asked, 'if there is anyone who has it in their heart to write a book, let me know. Bill put up his hand and said, me!Soon after, Bill started writing his book Straining at the Oars, and soon after that his world started to unravel. God was giving him content to make sure his book would be one that could truly help people, because it was written with real life experiences in heart and mind. His marriage ended, COVID saw his job as a pastor terminate, and very soon he found himself battling depression, as he bounced from state to state, home to home, and job to job. He was truly 'straining at the oars'. He got through his struggles, published his book in 2023 and he says:This book, although not originally intended to be so, comes from a lot of painful experiences and mistakes I am still learning and recovering from. However, this book also comes from the many blessings I continue to receive as I encounter Christ in my personal “storms of life” I pray that this book will be a blessing to you or someone you know who is straining at the oars. I have three wonderful adult daughters, two amazing sons-in-law, and four beautiful grandchildren. Unfortunately, as I wrote this book, I saw my marriage of 38 years come to an end. I have been a Christian for most of my life. That doesn’t mean my life has been easy. I have been an ordained pastor for most of my adult life. That certainly didn’t make life any easier for me either. This is a wonderful conversation, with a courageous and inspiring man. It is one I know will fill you will hope and encouragement and give you strategies to help you lay down your oars and let the wind fill your sails. Ilea Worsfold is now an exercise scientist, researcher, author and content creation specialist. She has experience in representing the interests of organisations that operate across the health, fitness, wellness and technology fields. She loves delivering research driven, innovative, unique and engaging advice to her brands that inspires their customers on their wellness journey. It has been an interesting journey for her to get to this place in her life, to loving her career, helping many people, married to a the man of her dreams, and with two beautiful children. It is a dream life, and she got there by following her intuition and taking one leap of faith after another. This does not mean it was easy, but it does give evidence to the power of trusting the gut feelings we all have, but often ignore. When asked, as a child, what she wanted to do when she grew up, Ilea said, 'I want to be a lawyer so I can buy a BMW'. She never became a lawyer, nor did she buy a BMW (yet). Instead she followed her gut and her first leap of faith led her to working in fraud investigation. After a while, she realised this was not her path and so started her own business doing what she is doing now. On the way, with many spontaneous actions, she has found herself exactly where she needs and wants to be in life. Ep 169Healed on day one

Ryan Peebles was ashamed, embarrassed, and angry. He had done everything to take care of his back, and yet he was broken. His back problems cast a shadow over his life for a decade. That time was painful, but it was also a journey of growth, where he developed an ever-evolving, deepening understanding of the body, which he will shares in this podcast. It all started when lower back pain side-lined Ryan from playing basketball as a junior in high school. He couldn’t lift weights anymore. And he couldn’t pursue his passion of surfing because he felt nerve damage every time he went. He had one chiropractor tell him, after looking at his x-ray, that he would be in a wheelchair by the time he was 30. That severely affected his psyche, so his mind, emotions and back was really messed up after that, and I felt hopeless. One day in 2010, he was curled up on my bedroom floor dwelling on his pain. It was his usual spot, but this time was different. Not only did he have his normal lower back pain, but both my knees hurt too. He also had neck pain, and could feel that his jaw was jutting forward, and his bite was even messed up! In that moment he knew… he would either have to accept his wheelchair-bound fate, or take responsibility in his own hands and become his own healer. So when he was 24 years old, he committed his life to healing his back.In the following years he became obsessed with research, consuming countless books and articles online. Eventually, he identified muscle imbalances as the cause of his back problem. This whole body concept resonated with him. It connected the dots and gave him an explanation for many of his body problems. It was a way to look at chronic injuries from a full body perspective. By continually adapting his personal routine as he learned, he found a process that gets to the "core" of the problem. Piece-by-piece, and day-by-day he created this unique program that teaches people how to retrain their body for healthy movement, and get out of pain for good. What does it take to “Own Your Awesome” and take the reins of creating the success you know you deserve? If there is one message that is universal today, it is about the power of the mind and the importance of tapping into your unique, and multifaceted self-leadership to achieve your goals.
