Roundabouts and Budget Rabbit Holes (Hour 2)
In today’s second hour, Todd joins us from WGBW in Green Bay. This afternoon, he asks us What’s Worse: roundabouts or traffic lights? We take a bunch of calls and texts about which our listeners dislike more. At the bottom of the hour, we welcome Maggie Shreiner and Noe Goldhaber of Wisconsin Watch. They’re two of the organization’s newest reporting interns, and they’re already diving deep into stories that are important to our state. Their latest article looks at the most recent Marquette Law School poll. Maggie and Noe compare what Wisconsinites have said they want with what Republicans are working on in their latest state budget proposal. Pat and Trygve Talk Spelunking (Hour 1)
Today, Todd is spending some time at a family gathering, so for our first hour, Pat Kreitlow of Mornings with Pat Kreitlow and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project step in to guest host! They start off the show with a conversation about the Trump Administration’s proposal. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson has stood staunchly opposed to this bill, but over the weekend, he caved in. Pat and Trygve talk about how Republicans who don’t quite align with MAGA are acting around the nation. Some, like Senator Ron Johnson, are talking a big game and caving in behind closed doors. Others who actually fight substantively against the MAGA agenda find themselves pushed out of office. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys joins us again for another weekly check-in on the state budget and other important happenings in the Capitol. For more Wisconsin news and fun from Pat, check out UpNorthNewsWI.com. For more insight on national politics, head to trygveolson.substack.com to read Searching for Hope, Trygve’s new blog. BREAKING: GOP Reaches Across Aisle For Budget (Hour 1)
Happy Friday! To kick off today’s show, Civic Media Political Editor and founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer joins us live from the WAUK studios to share some breaking news. Ostensibly, the Republican-led state legislature is finally getting serious about passing a state budget. Realizing that they cannot do it on their own, they have now invited Democratic State Senator Dianne Hesselbein to the table for negotiations. While this move inspires some hope that a budget may yet be passed by July, we maintain a healthy skepticism. Yesterday’s Joint Finance Committee meeting was rescheduled to 10 am today before being delayed twice more to 2 pm and now 4 pm as we began our show. After that discussion, we are joined once again by our friend and legal expert Matt Flynn. Yesterday, we spoke with him about some state Supreme Court decisions. Today, the national Supreme Court has released an opinion that may put birthright citizenship in danger. Beyond Brats and Burgers (Hour 2)

Rural Wisconsin Healthcare Is Shutting Down… Again (Hour 2)
Summer is the season of home renovation projects, so this afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: carpeting or wood floors? We take texts and calls on whether you’d rather have stained floors or cold feet. After that, Todd addresses the chaos that the Trump administration’s budget proposals will cause in Wisconsin’s rural health care systems. A year ago, a rural nursing home in Sauk County warned that they would have to close if their funding was not addressed within the year. Now, they’re likely going to vote to shut their doors in a week. This has been happening across our state for years, and if MAGA Republicans get their way with our federal and state budgets, it’s going to get a whole lot worse very quickly. Will Wisconsin Democrats Get Trapped Into Populism? (Hour 1)
This Wednesday, we are joined by our typical midweek guests, Pat Kreitlow of Mornings with Pat Kreitlow and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project. We begin the show with an explanation of today’s unanimous state Supreme Court decision that limits the governor’s extremely powerful line item veto. Todd, Trygve and Pat also discuss the latest Marquette Law School Poll results and whether or not Tony Evers should run for a third term as governor. According to the latest results, 55% of Wisconsinites believe that he should not run again. However, who would be a better alternative? As we try to beat the Summer heat, Todd asks us What’s Worse: soft serve ice cream or frozen custard? We share a lot of controversial opinions on the greatest frozen treats. At the bottom of the hour, Alex Madorsky of The Nature Conservancy returns to the program! He joins us in-studio to provide an update on the status of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund amidst chaotic state budget negotiations. At the end of the show, we chat with Pete Schwaba about what he’ll be talking about on Nite Lite tonight (tonite?). Donald Trump Doesn’t Understand The Middle East (Hour 1)
After a brief recap of last night’s storms across the state, Todd brings us an update on the Israel-Iran conflict. The Trump administration appears to believe that a centuries-long conflict can be solved in a day, declaring a simple cease-fire agreement between the two countries. On the White House lawn, President Trump expressed frustration with the state of the conflict, saying that Israel and Iran “have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing.” His statements exemplify Trump’s inability to effectively serve in an office as important and distinguished as President of the United States. At the bottom of the hour, Todd brings attention to the foolishness of our Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. In another senate hearing, he admits that he has no idea what his department’s current guidelines actually are. At the end of our first hour, Todd gives kudos to Governor Tony Evers for his efforts to support childcare providers in our state. Finally, We’re Replacing Todd With Artificial Intelligence (Hour 2)
In the wake of this weekend’s extreme heat, Todd asks us What’s Worse: a heatwave or a cold snap? We take your calls and texts on whether you hate putting on layers or shedding them more. At the bottom of the hour, Wisconsin Watch Statehouse Bureau Chief Matt DeFour joins us to talk about a constructive way to use AI: rapid fact checking. Artificial intelligence is very good at condensing massive amounts of information that can then be verified by a human. Wisconsin Watch is using a new tool called Parser to quickly summarize interviews and public meetings and suggest newsworthy claims. This allows journalists to cover significantly more ground in a shorter amount of time, which is important in today’s world of rapid-fire headlines. BREAKING: Iran Launches Missiles At US Air Base (Hour 1)
BREAKING NEWS: Earlier today, Iran made a retaliatory missile strike against a US air base located in Qatar. We welcome Professor Stephen Zunes of the University of San Francisco back to the program to share his expertise on international affairs. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys returns for her weekly Joint Finance Committee update. Since we last spoke with her, no progress has been made in budget negotiations. In fact, the committee hasn’t even had another meeting. Looming over this absence is the proposed $87 million cut to the UW System budget that we have reported on over the last week. According to Channel 3000, UW leadership are making moves in anticipation of this cut. No ICE At The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Stadium (Hour 2)

We take some calls and texts about whether you’d rather own an old car or borrow a new one. Aaron’s board game of the week is Flip 7, an easy Blackjack-inspired game of pushing your luck! This game is less than ten bucks and can be played with up to ten people, so it’s great for family reunions in the summer. Are NIL Deals Making College Athletes Soft? (Hour 1)
After giving out a keyword for this week’s Free Ticket Friday contest, Todd covers some of the Trump administration’s latest deportation blunders. Despite Trump’s rhetoric about only deporting the worst of criminals, ICE agents are allegedly avoiding known gang areas and raiding Home Depots in LA instead. At the bottom of the hour, we welcome Bradie Ewing back to the show for his biweekly visit! Bradie’s background as a three-time B1G Badger football champion and NFL fullback give him a unique perspective on life’s challenges. After catching up on how Bradie likes to spend the summer with his family, Todd asks him about the effect of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals on student athletes. After wrapping up today’s edition of What’s Worse, Todd covers some national news. In the latest round of the Trump administration’s pointless cruelty, they are moving to cut LGBTQ+ resources from 988, the national mental health crisis hotline. Dan Shafer’s WisDems Convention Takeaways (Hour 1)
Today, we begin the show with another update on the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee’s plans to cut $87 million from the UW System budget. After Todd broke that news on Monday night and constituents called their representatives to complain, the item was removed from Tuesday’s agenda. The chaos continues, as today, the JFC cancelled their meeting in its entirety. At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media Political Editor and Founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer joins us to break down the latest statewide news. He and Todd begin with more implications of this cancelled JFC meeting. They also cover Dan’s latest article with his ten takeaways from last weekend’s WisDems convention. In today’s second hour, Todd asks us What’s Worse: people who are critical of others or people who are not critical of others? After taking your calls and texts, it seems that people are pretty divided, but the most important thing is that criticism is based in fact. At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media’s own Earl Ingram joins us to talk about tomorrow’s Juneteenth celebration in Milwaukee. This morning, Kimberly Wethal at the Wisconsin State Journal is following up on the story Todd broke Monday night about the Joint Finance Committee’s plans to gut the UW System’s funding by $87 million. Growing And Preserving Rural EMS with James Small (Hour 1)
Last night, Todd heard from his sources that the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee was planning to announce an $87 million cut from the UW System budget today. Late this morning, the JFC removed this item from the agenda, likely due to calls from constituents after the agenda leaked. Remember, if you don’t like something your representative is doing, contact their office and let them know! You just might make a positive difference. At the bottom of the hour, we are joined by James Small, the Rural EMS Outreach Program Manager at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. This relatively new program seeks to increase the reliability and sustainability of emergency medical services in rural areas around Wisconsin. EMS is handled by local governments, and young people who could fill those roles increasingly move out to bigger cities. James walks us through how his department is working to address these challenges. Protecting Our Pollinators with Amy Barrilleaux (Hour 2)
We begin today’s second hour with another check-in from Wisconsin Watch Reporter Tom Kertscher. He joins us to share his reporting on the Wisconsin Democratic Convention that was held near Wisconsin Dells this weekend. One of his biggest takeaways is that Democrats agree that MAGA authoritarianism is a real threat to our democracy, but there is little if any agreement on how to address the issue. Tom also shares his latest fact briefs, which are short fact checks on things our elected officials claim. At the bottom of the hour, Clean Wisconsin Communications Director Amy Barrilleaux joins us to celebrate National Pollinator Month! Today, Amy talks about common chemicals and pesticides that hurt pollinators and what we can do to reduce exposure. Amy also hosts Clean Wisconsin’s podcast, The Defender! Once Again, There Is No Place For Violence In Politics. (Hour 1)
Over the weekend, a Minnesota man assassinated former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman. He also murdered her husband and injured some other political targets. According to Channel 3000, the suspect, Vance Boelter, had a list of approximately 70 politicians he intended to kill, including Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin. Much like with last year’s attempt on Donald Trump’s life, MAGA pundits immediately took to social media to claim that the assassin is a Democrat. Todd takes some time to set the record straight. According to people in Boelter’s life, he is a Trump supporter, but regardless of that, there is no place for violence in our political system. MAGA leadership consistently callously politicizes tragedies like this, weaponizing them for political purposes before addressing the humanity of these situations. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys returns for her weekly Joint Finance Committee update. After addressing the horrible violence of this last weekend, she dives into one of the most disappointing items being shot down by the state legislature: the lack of funding for the Universities of Wisconsin. As longtime listeners will know, this issue is very close to Todd’s heart. Sen. Roys agrees that the continued closures of UW campuses do not appear to be in our state’s best interest. After that, Todd and Sen. Roys move to a broader political discussion following the weekend’s Democratic Party of Wisconsin Convention. At the bottom of the hour, we look through some of Brian VanHooker’s latest work at Cracked.com. Most notably, he’s taken up the task of finding some of the funniest adult jokes from The Muppet Show. Now that it’s June, we’ve hit one of the most popular wedding seasons of the year. This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: forgetting a birthday or forgetting an anniversary? We take your calls and texts on which one is more likely to upset your friends and family. Breaking news: musician Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone passed away today at the age of 82. We celebrate his accomplishments by playing some of his music. At the bottom of the hour, Todd returns to the national headlines and what they mean for us here in Wisconsin. Over the weekend, a Wisconsin sports legend passed away. Jerry Petitgoue of Cuba City coached basketball in our state for 60 years, ending his career with an incredible record of 1,027-249. WRCO and WRCE Station Manager Phil Nee has had many chances to observe and interview Coach Petitgoue over the years. Phil joins us today to share an interview he had with the coach in 2018 and celebrate his impact on Wisconsin high school sports. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys joins us for another update on the Joint Finance Committee’s state budget negotiations. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen much movement. Democrats are proposing increased funding for education and childcare, but Republicans staunchly oppose these measures despite our approximately $4 million budget surplus. Rural Republican-led districts are among those suffering the most from our state’s lack of funding in these areas. Remembering D-Day And Building Character (Hour 1)
Over the last couple of days, Elon Musk and President Trump have begun a brutal public feud. Rick Wilson of The Lincoln Project had some very insightful comments last night while recapping the exchanges of insults and threats. He still has contacts in the White House who tell him that Trump world is scrambling to try and get ahead of Musk’s attacks. Eighty-one years ago today, American troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Todd takes some time to recognize the tremendous sacrifices made by our military on that day that helped to secure our freedoms today. At the bottom of the hour, our friend Bradie Ewing returns to share sports commentary and discuss the importance of character and integrity. He also weighs in on the latest Aaron Rodgers drama. If you’re interested in booking Bradie Ewing as a motivational speaker, you can reach out on Twitter/X @bewing34 or on Instagram @bradie.ewing. AI Is Already Hurting Us. What Can We Do? (Hour 2)
In today’s second hour, we are happy to welcome Emily Mills, a local independent writer and journalist. Lately, in addition to their own blog, they’ve been writing for The Recombobulation Area. Their latest column focuses on the dangers of artificial intelligence, but from a different angle than we typically hear. While fears that AI will harm humanity are not necessarily unfounded, it is likely farther away than many people believe. Meanwhile, this technology is already harming our environment in Wisconsin and around the world due to extreme power consumption. Visit www.therecombobulationarea.news and grist-from-the-mills.ghost.io to read more of Emily’s work! At the bottom of the hour, Todd asks us What’s Worse: fads or dumb traditions? A Unanimous Decision? In Today’s Supreme Court?! (Hour 1)
To kick off today’s show, Todd gives us the next keyword for this year’s Sconnie Summer Text-to-win Contest! For the next two weeks, tune in to your local Civic Media radio station at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm for your chances to win hourly prizes of $100 or Brewers tickets, as well as one of two grand prize Wisconsin vacations! We have some breaking news: former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It appears he is not following the exact trajectory of Brett Favre. We talk with Civic Media Sports Reporter Mike Clemens at the bottom of the hour with more commentary on the future of both Rodgers and the Packers. In political news, the US Supreme Court made a few important rulings this morning. Firstly, our highest court unanimously decided to drop Mexico’s lawsuit against the US gun industry. However, they did not sign the blank check that gun manufacturers asked for, leaving the door open for future accountability. Another unanimous decision allows for workers to more easily sue for “reverse discrimination,” where they feel they have been denied employment or promotion due to not being a minority. We finish up this hour by covering the latest in President Trump and Elon Musk’s public feud. Trygve Olson On The Normalization Of Bad Behavior (Hour 2)
In our second hour, we are joined by our other typical Wednesday guest, Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project. We share with him the story of Clayton Ljungberg’s Wisconsin marathons we spoke about last hour. This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: being awake in the middle of the night or oversleeping? We take your calls and texts. Over the last few days, we have talked about Senator Joni Ernst’s absurd and condescending behavior at a recent town hall. Trygve weighs in on how MAGA normalizes being an absolute jerk. You can read more of Trygve’s latest thoughts on Searching for Hope, his Substack blog, at trygveolson.substack.com. Celebrating Wisconsin Wins From Baseball To Beer (Hour 1)
To kick off today’s show, Todd gives us the keyword for the second day of this year’s Sconnie Summer Text-to-win Contest! For the next two weeks, tune in to your local Civic Media radio station at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm for your chances to win hourly prizes of $100 or Brewers tickets, as well as one of two grand prize Wisconsin vacations! As always on Wednesday, we are joined by Pat Kreitlow of Mornings with Pat Kreitlow, as well as his new producer, Parker Olsen. Parker is an alum of UW-Whitewater, who today celebrates winning the national DIII baseball championship. He shares his pride in the school and its sports teams. In political news, former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced today that she is leaving the Democratic party to join the trend of writing a book that slams former President Biden. Todd, Pat, and many of Jean-Pierre’s Democratic colleagues express some uncertainty about what her moves are intended to accomplish. Is this just a grift? In a new article from Channel 3000, the Wisconsin DMV warns us of an increasing number of phishing scams. Scam artists pretend to be DMV officials and reach out to citizens asking for personal information. Remember, government agencies will not send you messages asking for money or personal information. If you get one of these messages, contact your local DMV at their official number for more information. Here in Wisconsin, we find all kinds of creative ways to celebrate food and beer, and not all of them have to be strictly unhealthy. Clayton Ljungberg of Oconomowoc has made a name for himself by combining his physical fitness journey with some of the things that make Wisconsin great. High School NIL Deals and Clever Car Cleaning (Hour 2)
In today’s second hour, Todd is joined by Civic Media Sports Director Jimmie Kaska for an update on the latest rule changes in Wisconsin high school sports. The biggest change that most people are aware of is the introduction of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals to our high schools. We are one of the last states to adopt NIL at the high school level. However, high school deals will look very different from the huge sponsorships we see at the college level. Jimmie walks us through the differences, from who is eligible to be sponsored to how large those sponsorships can be. At the bottom of the hour, we talk about late Spring cleaning. Todd asks us What’s Worse: cleaning out the garage or cleaning out the car? We take your calls and texts on which chore is more daunting. Ramon Morales Reyes: It’s Already Happening Here (Hour 1)
After a brief update on some severe weather around the state, Todd gives us the keyword for the second day of this year’s Sconnie Summer Text-to-win Contest! For the next two weeks, tune in to your local Civic Media radio station at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm for your chances to win hourly prizes of $100 or Brewers tickets, as well as one of two grand prize Wisconsin vacations! Last week, we told you about DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s social media posts accusing Milwaukee resident Ramon Morales Reyes of planning to assassinate President Trump. As it turns out, Demetric Scott, another Milwaukee man, set up false information in an effort to prevent Morales Reyes from pursuing legal action after being physically assaulted by Scott. As of this broadcast, even after Demetric Scott confessed, Kristi Noem’s post slamming Morales Reyes is still up. Fact Checking The RPW Convention with Tom Kertscher (Hour 2)
This afternoon, Wisconsin Watch Reporter and Fact Checker Tom Kertscher returns to cover the latest political news in our state. One of his latest articles highlights Wisconsin’s tremendous decline in childhood vaccination rate. Over the past 30 years, the number of Wisconsin parents electing not to vaccinate their children has grown four times larger, endangering the “herd immunity” of children. This is likely due at least in part to increasing vaccine skepticism fueled by figures like Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. After the vaccine discussion, Tom shares some of his latest Fact Briefs, which are essentially succinct fact checks. Here are a few responses on statements shared at our state’s Republican Party Convention: Would ‘the vast majority’ of Americans get a 65% tax increase if GOP megabill doesn’t become law? Short answer: no. Does Mississippi rank higher than Wisconsin in fourth grade reading scores? Short answer: yes, but with some caveats. Is being transgender classified as a mental illness? Short answer: no. Subscribe to Forward, Wisconsin Watch’s weekly newsletter, at wisconsinwatch.org/subscribe to keep up with the most important things happening in the Capitol and how they affect you. At the bottom of the hour, Todd circles back to take calls on Senator Joni Ernst’s cruelty. To finish up the show, Todd asks us What’s Worse: driving slow in the fast lane or tailgating? Fighting For Compassion In Wisconsin’s Budget (Hour 1)
Today marks the first day of this year’s Sconnie Summer Text-to-win Contest! For the next two weeks, tune in to your local Civic Media radio station at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm for your chances to win hourly prizes of $100 or Brewers tickets, as well as one of two grand prize Wisconsin vacations! Last week, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst held a town hall, which is a rarity among Republicans these days. When discussing Medicaid cuts proposed in upcoming GOP legislation, one of her constituents exclaimed, “people are going to die!” Sen. Ernst responded by saying that everybody is going to die someday. Today, we share a video she posted on social media the next day, doubling down on her callousness and insulting the intelligence of her constituents. This is truly shameful behavior from a United States senator. At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys returns for another update on the Joint Finance Committee’s state budget deliberations. Sen. Roys informs us that the GOP members of the JFC continue to hold up the process as the deadline creeps ever closer. Our state’s systems for childcare, healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights and more could be in jeopardy, and we walk through the issues and how to solve them. The Trump Administration’s Low-Effort Persecution (Hour 2)
Earlier this week, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem tweeted about a Wisconsin resident who allegedly wrote a letter expressing intent to kill President Trump. All evidence points to the contrary, indicating that this individual was set up, and that his reputation has been irreversibly ruined by this false accusation. Meeting new people can be anxiety-inducing, especially if you’re not a big fan of handshakes. This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: handshakes or fist bumps? We take your calls and texts. Introducing Civic Media News Director Chali Pittman (Hour 1)
After a quick tribute to a few of our colleagues new and old, Todd moves to some of the most important news of the day. According to Dan Bice at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, over 130 retired judges are urging the court system to drop their case against Milwaukee Judge Dugan. The Trump administration is further meddling in Wisconsin affairs, identifying Shawano County as a “sanctuary county” for immigrants. This has no basis in reality. Shawano County is, however, a self-identified sanctuary county for second amendment gun rights. It is very likely that Trump’s team used AI to find any county or city that mentioned the word “sanctuary” without actually looking into the specifics. At the bottom of the hour, we are proud to introduce Chali Pittman, Civic Media’s new News Director! She has worked in journalism and radio for years, and comes to us most recently from WORT, a community radio station here in Madison. She did excellent work in their news department, and we are excited for her to share her expertise in highlighting what’s important to our communities. Trump And Musk’s Fiery Public Breakup (Hour 2)
As the kids come home from school this summer, Todd asks us What’s Worse: being too busy or having nothing to do? We take your calls and texts. There has been a disastrous breakup in the White House! Elon Musk is officially leaving his position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, as President Trump has “broken up” with him. This is likely because of Trump’s distaste for those he deems “losers,” a category Elon Musk now lies in after funding the losing side of Wisconsin’s state supreme court election. While the effects of DOGE cuts will cause serious problems and cost many lives around the world, Todd tries to bring some levity by playing some of the most popular breakup songs of all time. Trump’s Pardon Parade and the Battle of Buffets (Hour 2)
Todd Allbaugh dives into Trump's controversial pardons, spotlighting Scott Jenkins, a former Virginia sheriff convicted of bribery and fraud, who got a last-minute pardon from Trump. Allbaugh questions the ethics behind such pardons, suggesting a pay-to-play scheme. The episode also debates the culinary conundrum: what's worse, a la carte menus or buffets? Listeners weigh in on the choice between pricey, exclusive dishes and the unpredictable quality of buffets. Amidst the banter, the episode touches on international student visa issues and celebrates Badger basketball's John Blackwell returning to school, bringing a hopeful note to the mix.
