Disconcerting Echoes Of American History (Hour 2)

Today is the first day of Civic Media’s Break Into Spring Text To Win Contest! Tune in to our network every day for the next two weeks for your chance to win hourly prizes of $100 cash, a visit to Chula Vista Resort, or a pair of club-level Brewers tickets. Each text also enters you to win our grand prize– a brand new Verlo Mattress set! Listen at 7 am, 11 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm for the next two weeks for the keywords to text in. Visit civicmedia.us for more details.  This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: a sore back or a sore ass? (Also, is it a SORE ass as in a grumpy person or a sore ASS as in posterior?) We take your calls and texts on which pain aches more.  At the bottom of the hour, Todd brings us a story that sounds eerily familiar to today’s political division. In 1950, America was deep in the throes of the Red Scare. Republican Senator Margaret Chase Smith was one of the first to speak out against the horrors of McCarthyism, and her words ring just as true today.  At the very end of the show, Todd brings us a very disturbing and underreported story. Former US Attorney Jessica Aber was found dead. She was known for her work fighting Russian cybercrime and resigned from her position when Donald Trump was inaugurated as President this January. While it is certainly possible that her death is a coincidence, there is a pattern of deaths among Russian journalists and officials who make their dislike of Putin known. The possibility of foul play from the Kremlin here in America is deeply chilling. Coach Mark Johnson Heralds In More Miracles On Ice (Hour 1)

Over the weekend, Coach Mark Johnson led the Badgers Women’s Hockey team to their eighth Frozen Four National Championship victory under his leadership, cementing UW Madison as the most decorated hockey program in the country. We take a listen to the words of Coach Johnson, star player Kirsten Simms, and a few excellent calls from the winning plays. In men’s basketball, the Badgers were eliminated from the NCAA tournament in round two, they put up a great fight. Todd spends most of this hour digging into what brings out the best in our state’s college athletes.  We end this hour by addressing some of the serious political news of the day. Vice President JD Vance made an appearance on Fox News in which he derided Denmark, a NATO ally, for not surrendering Greenland to the US. This is absolutely bananas. The leaders of the free world should not be threatening military action against our allies, nor should they demand territory. Do Not Allow Elon Musk To Buy Your Information (Hour 2)

This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: extended warranties or extended family? We take your calls and texts on which one is more annoying.  In breaking political news, Elon Musk’s interference in Wisconsin’s state supreme court election is reaching a new high. He offers $100 to each voter who signs a petition against “activist judges,” effectively attempting to buy votes. Regardless of who you plan to vote for, we advise not signing the petition and taking Musk’s money. If you do, he will have access to your signature and a lot of your private information.  Aaron’s board game of the week is Monkey Palace! This family-friendly game is made out of LEGO bricks. While LEGO have made board games before, they haven’t always been the most fun. This game from 2024 breaks that trend. Each player adds pieces to the palace to try and appease a very picky monkey. We take texts and calls on the best way to trap a hog.  At the end of the hour, we share another take from political orphan and former Republican Congressman Scott Klug on election reform in our state. A ton of people are betting a lot of money on the NCAA tournament. With that in mind, Todd asks us What’s Worse: casinos or the lottery?  At the bottom of the hour, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler returns to the show to update us on the April 1st state supreme court election. There’s a lot at stake next month. As depressing as today’s political climate can be, Wisconsinites need to show up and make our voices heard. More BS From Brad Schimel About Milwaukee (Hour 1)

As Rush says in the song Freewill, “if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” Make sure to be a voter on April 1st in our State Supreme Court election. It’s Wednesday, and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project is here to help sift through the onslaught of news.  As published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning, Brad Schimel continues to spread misinformation about the security of voting in our state. Schimel is complaining about “late-night ballot dumps” in Milwaukee county. However, the reason Milwaukee submits their vote counts late at night is due to Republican legislative obstruction that doesn’t allow them to verify or count votes ahead of election night. Trygve also brings us some news on how the Trump administration’s tariffs will impact Wisconsin. It turns out that 10% of jobs in our state will be negatively impacted by tariffs. 77% of those 10% of people voted for Donald Trump. Get Your Kids Vaccinated (Hour 2)

After a short memorial service for Todd’s beloved CBS mug that shattered yesterday, we turn back to a more serious topic. It turns out that Wisconsin has the second worst measles vaccination rate in the country. Our friend Jane Matenaer calls in to the show to remind us how important vaccines are. She also reminds us that vaccines DO NOT cause autism.  This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: phone companies or cable companies? Democracy Stays On The Rails… For Now (Hour 1)

Todd begins today’s show by recapping President Trump’s weekend deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador in direct violation of a court order. This morning, Trump posted to his social media platform with a call for impeachment of the federal judge who made this ruling. Unexpectedly, Chief Justice Roberts of the Supreme Court made a statement indirectly rebuking Trump for his circumvention of the justice system. The Shamrock Club of New London have celebrated by transforming the city into New Dublin for over 40 years now. Mondays With Matt: Bypassing The Constitution (Hour 1)

As is now the norm, a lot of incredibly important news broke over the weekend. On Saturday, March 15th, the Trump administration directly defied a court order and faced no consequences. Our judicial branch relies on compliance, and the Executive branch simply chose not to comply. Our friend and legal expert Matt Flynn joins us to address this dire situation and what it may mean for the future of our constitutional democracy. It’s Wednesday, and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project is here to dissect the news of the day.  Yesterday, President Trump demonstrated his inability to drive a car as he attempted to sell Teslas on the White House lawn. In return, he received $100 million from Elon Musk, donated in such a way that Trump can easily use it for personal purposes. Todd and Trygve also talk about some ways the Trump administration continues to violate the Constitution.  At the end of the hour, Pat Kreitlow of UpNorthNews Radio joins us in-studio to talk about an event he will host tonight. On Misinformation And Hiding The Truth (Hour 1)

Yesterday afternoon, there was a massive brush fire in Brookfield. The plume of smoke was so big that it showed up on weather radar. Todd takes some time at the beginning of today’s show to address the damage from this tremendous blaze and commend the first responders who kept it under control.  Amidst reports of alleged emotionally abusive behavior, women’s Badgers basketball head coach Marissa Mosely has stepped down from her position. As she resigned instead of being fired, the reports will not be made public, leading many to believe that there is credence to the allegations.  Over the weekend, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) spoke in a few cities in Wisconsin. During his speech in Altoona, he asked the crowd about which issues affect them the most. If Democrats want to win more, they should take note from Bernie Sanders and actually ask what’s most important to people. Elon Musk’s Brain Chips and Fat Bears (Hour 2)

As we return to Daylight Savings Time, Todd asks us What’s Worse: people who are always early or people who are always late? Listen in for some fun stories about being late.  Aaron’s board game of the week is Katmai: The Bears of Brooks River! The backstory of this game needs some explanation. Every summer in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, bears park themselves on the banks of the Brooks River to gorge themselves on salmon. The park livestreams these bears every day for our enjoyment. Each October, they host Fat Bear Week, a popularity contest where people vote for their favorite enormous pre-hibernation bears. In Katmai, players place their bears along the river to try and catch the most salmon before winter. It is available for purchase at Osprey Publishing.  At the end of today’s show, we share the first in a new series of political editorials from former congressman Scott Klug. Schimel Has Learned Nothing From Eric Hovde’s Failure (Hour 1)

As we finished up the show yesterday, the Marquette University Law School Poll released its latest results. We briefly touched on them, but today, Todd dives deeper. One thing is very clear: Wisconsinites don’t know much about either of the candidates for our state supreme court race on April 1st. Todd’s biggest takeaway is that Americans are sick of political whiplash and are tuning out altogether. Last night, Vanessa Kjeldsen of WMTV15 News in Madison interviewed Brad Schimel on his campaign for the state supreme court. He echoed statements from Eric Hovde, claiming that people in nursing homes voted fraudulently in 2020. This is, of course, completely false. We take your calls with thoughts on Schimel’s ageist rhetoric.  Nearing the end of the hour, we have a surprise in-person visit from one of the hardest working people at Civic Media: Chad Holmes of WXCO! Looking At The World Through Different Lenses (Hour 2)

Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project sticks around into our second hour today to share some new research from the Lincoln Democracy Institute. He and his colleagues spent the last year interviewing thousands of people from Wisconsin and other swing states to ascertain better ways to connect with everyday Americans both in and out of politics. As Trygve has said before, you will never shame somebody out of their opinion. It may sound simple, but when having a conversation with somebody we don’t agree with, we must listen. If you can’t understand why they believe what they believe, you’ll have a very difficult time convincing them of anything.  As wet snow falls across much of Wisconsin, Todd asks us What’s Worse: slippery roads or slippery people? We take your calls and texts with opinions. The results of the latest Marquette Law School poll are now available, and Todd shares some of the key results as we close out today’s show. Dissecting Trump’s Speech with Pat and Trygve (Hour 1)

It’s Wednesday, so our friends Pat Kreitlow of UpNorthNews Radio and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project are back to discuss the news of the day! They join Todd in recapping last night’s presidential address from Trump. As expected, it was a campaign speech with very little basis in reality. Trump focused on creating clips that will spread like wildfire on social media. He either misspoke or lied about Social Security payments and transgenic mice, which he referred to as “transgender mice.” Towards the end of the hour, Trygve takes calls with a wide range of political questions from listeners. Following Van Orden’s Lead, National GOP Runs And Hides (Hour 2)

Starting today, President Trump’s tariffs have gone into effect on Canada, China and Mexico. US prices on steel have already risen significantly, and even Fox News is reporting that car prices have spiked 25% at many dealerships.  This morning, the House GOP told Republican officials to stop holding in-person town hall meetings after many of them received blowback from their constituents. This coincides with a Truth Social post from President Trump deriding loosely-defined “illegal protests” at college campuses.  It’s Taco Tuesday! This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: homemade tacos or Taco Bell? Even More Federal Layoffs with Luke Mathers (Hour 1)

To kick off today’s show, Todd clarifies a story from yesterday about the possibility of Social Security payments being interrupted by DOGE cuts. While former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley is concerned about the future of the program, those who receive payments via direct deposit are the least likely to be affected by these incoming changes. However, new claims and those submitted in paper are predicted to be slowed and interrupted significantly.  Over the weekend, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth released a video. In it, he announced that civilian Department of Defense employees will be required to email their supervisors with five things they accomplished that week. This follows Elon Musk’s push for all federal workers to justify their employment.  At the bottom of the hour, Luke Mathers returns for some Tuesday Tangents. He and Todd continue the discussion on Sec. Hegseth’s new orders. These “five bullet point” emails demonstrate a lack of trust and respect for the generals that supervise the DoD. Additionally, the emails will be sent outside of secure DoD servers, creating a new security risk. Monkeying Around In Phuket, Thailand (Hour 2)

Todd begins our second hour with more information on upcoming threats to Social Security. He also addresses President Trump’s executive order designating English as our nation’s official language.  This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: humid air or dry air? We take calls and texts on whether you’d rather be sitting in a puddle of sweat or suffer from dry skin and bloody noses.  At the bottom of the hour, we jump to one of our favorite topics: monkeys! A French tourist in Phuket, Thailand had his phone stolen by a monkey, who left an amazing selfie video behind. Musk And Trump: Together, Wherever They Go (Hour 1)

Last Friday, President Trump and Vice President Vance verbally assaulted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. Russians and MAGA officials alike parroted lies about the Russian-Ukrainian war over the weekend. Precious few GOP representatives took the path of Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), reminding us that Russia was the one to invade Ukraine unprovoked.  Also over the weekend, Elon Musk and his family flew aboard Air Force One without President Trump. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly ordered the Department of Defense to cease all planning and execution of cyberattacks on Russia. The previous Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley now claims that Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts could lead to an “interruption of benefits” for those receiving Social Security payments. We’re not trying to bring you down, but it’s pretty difficult to put a positive spin on the latest news. Broadway Brad Schimel Is Living In 1849 (Hour 1)

As the April 1st State Supreme Court election approaches, we are discovering who Brad Schimel really is. He supports using legislation from 1849 to ban abortion in Wisconsin and believes that the January 6th insurrectionists didn’t get fair trials. Don’t believe us? Tune in to hear it from the man himself. We have audio of Schimel saying that he supports keeping the 1849 abortion ban on the books. When you combine this with Schimel’s support for President Trump’s J6 rioter pardons, it is clear that this man shouldn’t be anywhere near the highest court in the state. Fighting For Right To Repair with Sen. Sarah Keyeski (Hour 2)

In our second hour, Todd takes your calls on Derrick Van Orden and reliable news sources.  At the bottom of the hour, we welcome State Senator Sarah Keyeski to talk about a new Right To Repair bill that she co-authored. As the law stands, manufacturers are allowed to make it difficult or impossible for their customers to repair their own equipment. For example, companies like John Deere may only allow dealerships to use certain tools or diagnostic software, preventing farmers from fixing their tractors when they need them most. Sen. Keyeski’s bill would ensure that parts and documentation are available at a reasonable price for end users. Celebrating Public Schools Week with Mike Johnson (Hour 1)

This Wednesday, Pat Kreitlow is out of town, but Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project joins us from the nation’s capital to cover the news with a touch of sports.  According to a new article from CNN, the Trump administration is restricting which news organizations are allowed to have White House correspondents. Reputable stalwarts like Associated Press will no longer have access to the White House. This move sets a dangerous precedent in American news that even Fox News reporters disagree with. Our country is now one step closer to state-run media.  At the bottom of the hour, we welcome Trygve’s friend Mike Johnson back to the show. Johnson is the Superintendent of the Eau Claire Area Public School District, and he’s here to celebrate Public Schools Week! In Wisconsin, public schools are the cornerstone of our communities. She is here to share her recent reporting on mental health in the Universities of Wisconsin. In 2022, Sarah Shulze was one of several student athletes across the country who died by suicide. For Once, Todd Agrees With Donald Trump (Hour 1)

Todd kicks off today’s show with a flurry of headlines spanning from local to international. From violence in Milwaukee to the Trump administration’s revisionism of the Russia-Ukraine war, the world feels like a crazy place right now.  At the bottom of the hour, our friend Luke Mathers brings us another round of Tuesday Tangents! We start by addressing a statement from President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi yesterday proposing legislation that would allow law enforcement to confiscate guns. This sounds exactly like a red flag law. Nearly identical common sense gun reform laws were proposed by the last administration, and Republicans derided them for “taking away people’s guns.”  In the last few minutes, Todd and Luke cover some big rumors floating around in college football.
