According to a new article from Dan Bice at Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Elon Musk has already spent at least $670,000 supporting former WI Attorney General Brad Schimel in our state supreme court race. That number is likely to increase in the coming weeks as we near election day on April first. Wisconsin has allowed easy circumvention of campaign donation limits for several years now. However, now that the richest man in the world is putting his thumb on the scale, we are reaching new heights.  At the bottom of the hour, our friend Luke Mathers hops on the show for another round of Tuesday Tangents! This conflict of interest epitomizes Musk’s blatant opportunism. The loneliness epidemic has reached new heights as AI chatbot romances are becoming dangerously popular. The simulated perfection of an AI companion can be addicting, making someone less likely to tolerate rejection in real life. Todd brings us some ways to work around this quagmire, mainly through reading literature and philosophy about real human relationships. The Trump administration has commanded over a dozen social clubs relating to race and/or gender at West Point Military Academy to shut down. Clubs affected include Society Of Black Engineers, Society Of Women Engineers, language clubs and several others. These clubs must delete all of their assets, and members are now forbidden from meeting in their own free time. Over the weekend, Elon Musk and the Trump administration took several actions that may send the entire world into an economic recession. Before diving into that situation, Todd walks us through some of his personal experiences with USAID and the lifelong friends he’s made in Central America.  Elon Musk, an unelected bureaucrat with no security clearance, is strong-arming his way into access to any and all data he wants. He is using this information to unilaterally cut off funding to anybody he doesn’t like. This is wildly unconstitutional, but not unexpected. State Supreme Court Justice Brian Hagedorn is recusing himself from an upcoming hearing on Act 10 due to his work on the original legislation. Their City Department is actively working to increase efficiency in their snow and ice management strategies while reducing environmental impacts from salt. Last night, an American Airlines passenger plane crashed into a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. 64 passengers and three soldiers are presumed dead, making this the deadliest plane crash in America since 2001. President Trump spent the majority of his press conference this morning blaming the Biden administration and DEI in the military for this disaster.  We also take a call from fellow Civic Media host Earl Ingram. We take your calls and texts on whether germs or horrible sounds irritate you more.  At the bottom of the hour, Todd updates us on some of the specific programs impacted by Trump’s funding freezes and budget cuts. The US President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved tens of millions of lives around the world, has already begun turning people away. While the funding freeze has been rescinded, PEPFAR and other programs deemed “unnecessary” by the Trump administration are still in danger. Here in Wisconsin, we may soon have a state law banning phones in schools. While electronics undoubtedly have both positive and negative effects on education, making this decision at the state level may put local municipalities in tough positions. He is now filing a federal lawsuit alleging that his free speech rights were violated. During our first hour, one of our listeners texted in asking for tips on helping Latino friends and family members, even if they are legal citizens. Todd has experience with immigration to and from Central American countries, and he provides some sound advice. If you “look Latino,” it might be a good idea to start carrying identification like a passport with you. Unfortunately, we may not be far off from a time where citizens are asked to show their papers to law enforcement. Whether or not you are a citizen, you can find information on your rights at micentro.org. Centro Hispano is an organization based in Dane County, but they may be able to help you find a local resource if you are not in that area. It’s never fun when your favorite sports team loses. After rounding up the weekend sports news, Todd addresses the overwhelming anxiety many of us feel a week into Trump’s second presidency. Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) summarized the core of the problem at an event this weekend. He emphasizes that seating is very telling at important events like weddings or inaugurations. The placement of billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in front of President Trump’s cabinet members tells Americans that the average citizen was never intended to be the focus of the incoming administration’s policies. Over the weekend, President Trump began his mass deportation efforts in Chicago. However, it appears to be more of a show of force than anything else. Yesterday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that CBS 58 in Milwaukee fired weather reporter Sam Kuffel for criticizing Elon Musk on her personal social media. While there may have been a legitimate reason to lay her off, the subsequent silence from CBS 58 speaks volumes. This sets a dangerous precedent very early on in Donald Trump’s presidency. If media companies will fire people in their weather departments for criticizing somebody who isn’t even an elected official, trust in news departments will likely deteriorate even further. Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed a multitude of executive orders, including a blanket pardon for everybody involved in the January 6, 2021 insurrection. Granting clemency to felons who assaulted police officers is hardly “backing the blue,” but Judge Brad Schimel is all for it.
