EP 168: What Is Truth? And How Do We Know What We Know?

Pat Flynn is joined by Professor Peter Koch of Villanova University to discuss the nature of truth--what is truth?--and do we know what we know? Many of us work off the assumption that truth is knowable and that our senses are reliable. But what happens when we question these assumptions? What happens when we attempt to define truth? These are some of the most important questions a person can ask in life, if that person is committed to finding out--if, and what--the meaning of life really is. Join us for a deep (but accessible!) philosophical conversation on the nature of truth and exploring the study of epistemology, or we know what we know.

EP 162: Why Adults Need Play and Not *Just* Exercise

Pat talks about the importance of expressing the strength and movement abilities you've been developing in the form of "adult recess"; in other words, play! So often we get caught up in the rigidity of a tightly structured training program. And that's great, because that's how we make progress. But we also need to take the time to use and enjoy the abilities we've developed. This is why we need to take opportunities to improvise with our movement, to get into flows, and just have fun exploring and expressing different patterns and drills. Such activity is not only fun, but burns calories and boost endorphins. Pat shares some ideas on how to get started with this, and why play--separate and distinct from exercise--is such an important part of healthy living.

Bonus Ep: Why Is There Something Rather than Nothing? The Argument from Contingency with Cameron Bertuzzi

It's philosophy week on The Pat Flynn Show, and today we're looking at a classic argument that attempts to answer the question: Why is there something rather than nothing? (If you enjoyed the episode with Dr. Josh Rasmussen or Dr. Delfino, then you are going to equally enjoy this!) This argument has deep roots, and has been developed and presented in many forms over the centuries as evidence for God by thinkers ranging from Thomas Aquinas to Gottfried Wilhelm Libneiz and many more. Today, I'm joined by Cameron Bertuzzi of Capturing Christianity to hear his presentation and defense of the argument--what it is, and what we can learn from it. EP 160: Why You Shouldn't Worry About Being the Best at Any One Thing

Pat talks about two very important fitness philosophies: Generalism, or being better than most people, at most things, even if you aren't the best at any one; and minimalism, which is doing the least you need to reach the goal at hand. Generalism teaches that hard-core specialization is not only a waste of time for the majority of people, but may even lead to serious, negative consequences. Better in almost every instance to focus on maximizing general physical preparedness, over specific physical preparedness. Minimalism, on the other hand, gets you to focus on pulling all the unnecessary clutter out of your fitness program; to marry effectiveness (doing the right things) to efficiency (doing things right) in all things. These are the informing philosophies and principles of Strong ON!, and the better you know them, the more clarity you'll have on not only what goals make sense, but also how to get there. Sunday School EP 12: Using Philosophy to Get at God with Dr. Robert Delfino

Can you know of God through reason alone? What can philosophy tell us about God's existence and nature? Dr. Robert Delfino joins me to a deep and interesting philosophical conversation about how the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas and his famous "5 ways" can help us to form a better understanding of the divine. About Dr. Robert Delfino Robert A. Delfino is Associate Professor of Philosophy at St. John's University in New York City. He received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he specialized in metaphysics, medieval philosophy, and Thomas Aquinas, studying under Professor Jorge J. E. Gracia. His current research interests include metaphysics, ethics, and the relationship between science, philosophy, and religion. He has published articles on Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Husserl, philosophy of science, personal identity, and human rights, in various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Russia, Poland, and India. He has presented papers at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain, and the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, in Poland. He is a fellow of the Adler-Aquinas Institute, a member of the Board of Advisors for the International Etienne Gilson Society. Show Notes and Resources I can't recommend Dr. Delfino's book enough: Does God Exist: A Socratic Dialogue on the Five Ways of Thomas Aquinas This is a thorough and accessible read for anybody who's interested in the relationship between faith and reason. EP 148: Minimalism 101 - The How, What, and Why

Episode 148: Minimalism 101 - The How, What, and Why There's a lot of talk about minimalism these days, but what does it really mean? Is minimalism disavowing yourself of possessions, selling your home, and living out of a backpack? Well, not exactly. At least, that's not the way most people should think about it. Rather, minimalism is the cross-section between effectiveness (doing the right things), on the one hand, and efficiency (doing things right), on the other. Said another way, minimalism is about identifying the most economical path to your goals; it's doing the very least you need to get a job done, and not a smidgeon more. In this episode, Pat talks about how to use minimalism as an orientation device (or a method/process) for figuring out the very best way to your goals. Hint: It may often mean doing a lot more work than you might have thought. Minimalism =/= being lazy. ... Please take 1 minute to subscribe and rank The Pat Flynn Show on iTunes! EP 145: What a Catholic Priest Thinks of Extreme Body Transformations

Often it has been said the notion of a "body transformation" presents a moral challenge: On the one hand, the very idea seems to suggest that we're not quite enough. On the other, it seems that everyone in the industry is trying to win customers by making these challenges all the more ridiculous and extreme--to the point that they're not even healthy; they're just obnoxious (if not outright dangerous!). So, what are we to make of this? Well, it may seem cliche, but when presented with a moral dilemma, I go straight for a priest. Lucky enough, I happen to know just the one: Father Steve Grunow, CEO of Word On Fire, himself a bodybuilder and fitness buff. On this episode, Father Steve and I discuss: Why it is that we can never attain complete happiness by reaching a certain number on the scale? How to find the right orientation in fitness and life: One that will allow you to pursue your fitness goals while maintaining a healthy relationship with your body. The spiritual corollaries to establishing a healthy body image, and why we need them. Why fitness challenges aren't necessarily a bad thing, and how to go about them safely and sustainable. And more! This episode couldn't be more important. So many people struggle with body image and feeling like they're not enough. I can tell you this: You are enough. Sunday School EP 8: What We Can Learn from the Prayer Life of Jesus

Shane Kapler, who runs ExplainingChristianity.com, joins me to talk about what we can learn from the prayer life of Jesus (and how to make it our own.). I was very happy to have Shane join me for this discussion; he not only brought my attention to details of Jesus's prayer that I was previously unaware of, but offered specific insights on how to incorporate prayer throughout the day--"prayer snacks", as we call them--as a regular form of spiritual exercise. Much of this discussion is based off the work found in Shane's book Through Him, With Him, and In Him: The Prayer Life of Jesus and How to Make It Your Own Please take 1 minute to subscribe and review The Pat Flynn Show on itunes! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-pat-flynn-show/id1253261458

Sunday School EP 7: Can You Be Good Without God?

Right and wrong, good and bad; where do these ideas come from? Why is it that we have a moral conscience to begin with, and feel some things are really just and others absolutely evil? Is morality merely the byproduct of sociobiological conditioning, or is it a clue to something more? In this episode, Pat Flynn explores the nature of morality, to see what--if anything--it can tell us about God.
