Ep 787SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-1: From Holistic Sex to Vaginal Kung Fu – Kim Anami : 787

E

Welcome to part 1 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes on the episode #787 web page for details!Kim Anami can read someone’s sexual energy as soon as they walk in the room. In this episode, she shares how you can best access, dive into and embody your own sexual energy (and how it will transform your life). As a holistic sex and relationship coach, Kim approaches and opens our minds to sex in both the physical realm and beyond. She runs her own online sex and relationships school, where she talks about the importance of doing the work to further connect ourselves with ourselves and our partners.“That's really what my work is trying to gear people toward is having these life-changing, cataclysmic therapeutic, deep, powerful, even, psychedelic type experiences that really change your life,” Kim says. She opens up the practice of sex beyond the definitions you may see and hear in popular culture into an energetic source. Recirculating your sexual energy through deep breathing work lets you move the sexual energy in the body to where it needs to be for healing and rejuvenation. By impeding the natural flow of that energy through your body, you’re preventing yourself from having the sexual experiences, physical or spiritual, that may have before seemed impossible. “The big barometric question that I asked people is, "Does that leave you feeling energized, revitalized, transformed, and has it changed your life?" Kim asks. In this episode, you’ll also learn how accessing your sexual self-knowledge and awareness is tied to feminine and masculine energy, hormonal birth control, vaginal strength and greater power, and creativity. “It's because this has the power to really rebirth, right? This is the procreative energy of the universe that we literally have at our fingertips. Every single one of us.”Kim will teach you how to build up your own strength in so many ways, from your pelvic floor to your breathing to your emotional well-being. This leads to increased connection, intimacy, energy and creativity in your sexual relationships.Listen on to become more informed and empowered about sex.LEARN MORE! VAGINAL KUNG FU SALONVaginal Kung Fu is the ancient art of vaginal strengthening and the cultivation of sexual power, pioneered by Kim Anami. She takes Taoist and Tantric practices and combines them with cutting-edge modern science and metaphysical studies to obtain quantum-leap and life-changing results. Ep 786Triggered Much? How to Avoid Extremes and Find Your Middle Ground – Sam Qurashi with Dave Asprey : 786

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Sam Qurashi, a self-professed “unorthodox psychologist” who walked away from a psychiatric residency at an addiction hospital because he wanted to help people in a different way. He’s actively working to change people’s interactions with the external world.Sam’s now a writer and entrepreneur with a following of more than 700K (and rapidly growing) on Instagram. He shares thoughts, concepts and questions we can ask ourselves to interrupt the psychological patterns that keep us trapped in mental loops of our own design. “The best way to trigger a change is to create an interruption, but how do you create an interruption that does not cause stress?” he asks. “How do you create an interruption that is gentle, that is a way to get people to reflect?” His framework for growth and change requires that we question ourselves and consider a model of learning he’s developed called liminalism. He looked at the common approaches people have about learning and living in the extremes and realized how little they actually benefit our personal reality or truth. “A lot of people live in extremes,” Sam says. “If you live in an extreme, you're limited automatically.”“What lives between black and white is not gray,” he explains. “It's literally the entire color spectrum. Balance, focus, flexibility, options, choice–that lives in the middle ground.”He learned how to change his own perceptions of the world by interviewing experts that live beyond the frame of traditional psychology. Our discussion explores the interesting lessons Sam learned from a pickpocket, hypnotist, cold reader, tea master, horse whisperer and others. One of the things that had him curious was how they viewed fear.“Fear lives in the future,” Sam says. “The future doesn't exist but fear just visited me in the present moment. So, if I jump, I'm actually racing fear into the future. If I get there first, I'm obliterating the fear.” Listen on to find out how you can avoid extremes in your life, find your personal middle ground, and face your fears.Enjoy! Ep 785Finding Pleasure in Fasting, Sex and Spirituality – Nadia Bolz-Weber with Dave Asprey : 785

E

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Lutheran Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber shares her relationship with religion that’s refreshingly frank.Nadia, a former addict and stand-up comedian, founded the House for All Sinners & Saints church in Denver, Colorado, in 2008. She led the congregation for a decade, then retired from church leadership to continue her work as a public theologian. She’s also the author of three New York Times bestselling books in which she considers the nature of sex, pleasure, spirituality–and even shame. She explores and embraces a pretty expansive worldview. I find her fascinating–from her “Sarcastic Lutheran” social handles to "The Confessional" podcast she hosts–and wanted to get her unique perspective on fasting, lack and going without. On Fasting: “My own profound experience of fasting actually isn’t part of the Christian tradition,” Nadia explains. “It's just 48 hours of prayer and fasting, and I'm outside on the ridge of this mountain, not a mountain, but the hills. With just a bedroll. For two days. I stay in one spot. Being a New York Times bestselling author does jack shit for you.”On the Body: “It's baffling to me that Christianity became such a body hating, pleasure-hating religion, when the whole story behind Christianity is, God decided to have a human body,” she says. “And then we say they're evil if we actually believe God decided out of all things to slip into skin and walk among us. It's just crazy to me.”On Sex: “I was walking down the street in London, all this stuff is swirling in my head, and I was just like so amazed by how good it was for me to be having sex again,” she says. “And then I thought, “Why did the church make me sign a paper saying I wouldn't do this. How is it better for my church if I'm not getting laid?” That makes no sense whatsoever.” In her most recent book, “Shameless: A Sexual Reformation: A Case for Not Feeling Bad About Feeling Good (About Sex)“ she writes about the complicated relationship people have with sex and pleasure, and Christianity’s often distorted reality of that.Listen on to our conversation and to learn how to sift through life’s mixed messages about faith and pleasure to find what brings you personal meaning.Enjoy! Ep 784Five Motivators That Fuel Peak Performance – Steven Kotler with Dave Asprey : 784

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Steven Kotler believes there’s a formula for the impossible and that the answer lies in our biology. He’s spent a lifetime researching and looking for ways to achieve his own peak performance, and today we get his advice on how you can achieve yours. In Steven’s newest book, “The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer” he’s combined neuroscience and decades of research to make a playbook for extreme performance improvement and an exploration of the frontiers of human possibility. He lays out four components to maintaining peak performance: motivation, learning, creativity and flow. He’s a New York Times-bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes. He’s also the executive director of the Flow Research Collective, an institute that researches the neuroscience of flow states and trains individuals to harness their own flow-state, so they can achieve more, faster.“One of the qualities of a flow state is this quality of effortless effort,” Steven says. “Bottom-up attention is really what it is instead of top-down attention. It's happening automatically.”While you can’t live in the flow state, we talk about how you can maximize your time in that state and stay in touch with your motivation.“When you talk about intrinsic drive, you're really talking about curiosity, passion, purpose, autonomy, and mastery,” Steven says. “Those five are our big five intrinsic motivators.”Once you have those five things, he explains how it becomes easier to begin setting goals and finding ways to constantly tune into your willpower in order to make them a reality.“Sometimes in peak performance you’ve got to go slow to go fast,” Steven says. “Learning to turn curiosity into passion and passion into purpose. This is one of those places where you got to go slow. Because once you get it right, these are three huge intrinsic motivators. If they're pointing in the same direction, it unlocks a tremendous amount.”Oh, and then we also talk about the time he flew a MIG-17 Russian fighter jet — without knowing how to fly. Steven has lived an incredible life and has a ton of great knowledge, experience and insight to share. Listen on to learn about what it takes for you to achieve your own brand of impossible.Enjoy! And get more resources at https://daveasprey.com/category/podcasts/WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 783Inflammation’s Ties to Fasting, Cancer and Covid – Dr. Miriam Merad with Dave Asprey : 783

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the focus is on inflammation and how it’s related to fasting, cancer and even Covid. If you want to know how your immune system works, Dr. Miriam Merad most definitely is the expert to ask. So I did. She’s an internationally acclaimed physician scientist who’s doing groundbreaking research on how our immune system fights common and recurring infections. Dr. Merad leads the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine (PrIISM) at Mount Sinai, New York. Her research lab recently found that fasting reduces inflammation and improves chronic inflammatory diseases without affecting the immune system’s response to acute infections. However, our immune systems respond differently to stressors like fasting, diets and levels of activity. “We are not all equal,” says Dr. Merad. “So, we have to really understand that it’s important to stratify people, and this stratification comes from teamwork with computational and quantitative immunologies and quantitative biologies. Some ethnic groups have different type of gene organization, that we can now identify, and sometimes it’s spontaneous mutation.”We also get into Dr. Merad’s recent findings on COVID-19 (why some patients develop severe forms of the virus and some don’t) and her research on cancer immunology. Her findings are fascinating, and she’s an engaging guest. Her research helps us better understand human immunology, a topic she’s always been captivated by.“We, as a human species, are alive today because we were able to survive millions of years of exposure to threats,” Dr. Merad says. The only reason we were able to survive is because our immune system protected us. “It is our best doctor.“I appreciate her holistic approach to her practice and her research, and I really think you’ll find something in here that inspires you.Enjoy! E

In Dave Asprey’s brand new book, “Fast This Way: Burn Fat, Heal Inflammation, and Eat Like the High-Performing Human You Were Meant to Be,” he asks you to throw out the rules you think you know about fasting. He shows you how to do it easily without facing down cravings and shows how you can radically reframe your relationship with food to seriously upgrade our health. This means simply conquering your fear of going without. “This is the most accessible book I've written,” Dave says. “There's plenty of science in there, but it's also like here's step one, here's step two.”In this unique episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dave steps out of the hosting seat and hands the podcast mic to Lara Logan to ask the questions. Lara’s been a journalist and war correspondent for nearly three decades. Ep 781New Research Says Fasting Beats Cutting Calories – Leonie Heilbronn, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 781

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m joined by Australian researcher Leonie Heilbronn, Ph.D.. Her fasting research looks at the biological pathways that support reducing the risk of chronic diseases.Leonie leads the Obesity and Metabolism group based within the Lifelong Health Theme at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute at Adelaide University in Adelaide, Australia. Today, I have her on to talk about her studies on fasting, many of which show more specific results than what we’ve seen in this field before. She looks at intermittent fasting, time restricted eating, calorie restriction and more. In a particular study on women, Leoni says, “We did see that the intermittent fasting group lost a little bit more weight than the caloric restriction group, and they had better improvements in their health.” There were other positive results like reductions in diabetes and cardiovascular risk markers. Fasting isn’t one-size-fits-all, so I asked Leonie a lot of questions about her research, such as:How does the food you eat during intermittent fasting affect the fast itself? What food works for some people and not others and how does that influence the effectiveness of your fast? How do intermittent fasting and caloric restriction compare? When should you eat your daily protein and carbs? Should you consume black coffee during your fast? How does time-restrictive eating affect your lifespan? How do people respond in fasting studies? “For some people, it takes them a little while to get used to fasting and then some people just maybe never get used to it,” she says. How do people respond in time restrictive eating studies? “I think time restrictive eating is great because you don’t really have to change everything that you’re eating and you’re still going to have some really good effects,” she says. “But I think if you started to have bad behaviors because of time pressure, then you’re not going to see the improvement that we’d hope to see.”Leonie breaks down her research in in simple terms, so no matter what your familiarity with fasting might be, you’ll find a fascinating entry point. Enjoy! Ep 780What’s Up with Water Fasting? – Dr. Alan Goldhamer with Dave Asprey : 780

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m joined by Dr. Alan Goldhamer, one of the world’s leading experts on medically supervised, water-only fasting. He’s supervised the fasting and care of more than 20,000 patients at TrueNorth Health Center in Santa Rosa, California, since he founded it in 1984.His mission is to expand evidence-based knowledge of how medically supervised, water-only fasting and diet impact human health; train clinicians in the use of these interventions; and share findings with researchers and the public.“We know using this protocol, this process can be done safely,” he says. “We’ve actually published a fasting safety study–the first fasting safety study that's been published in a peer-reviewed journal–that involved tracking all the patients for five years, and all of the symptoms, and classifying them according to the CTCAE criteria, the adverse events criteria on hundreds of patients.”A few things you may not know about water fasting:Your Body Self-Cleans: “The body does a really good job of regulating and recycling and restoring electrolyte balance during water-only fasting,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “And as soon as you start supplementing, then it puts increased load on other nutrients, it gets complicated, and there's no good long term safety criteria using supplemented fasting.”Your Gut Heals: “What we see clinically is that these patients with microbial imbalances tend to improve dramatically,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “We do really well in treating conditions ranging from ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, to the dysbiosis and chronic constipation, and more.”Your Inflammation Decreases: “There's a powerful anti-inflammatory effect to fasting,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “All the acute phase reactive proteins, high sensitivity CRP, fibrinogen, pepsinogen, whatever you want to measure, tends to consistent and predictably go down during fasting. So the gut leakage appears to be able to heal.”Our discussion covers research behind water fasting, what health conditions it may benefit and what happens during a water fast. We also get into a lot more information about health.“There's a lot in common between whether it's intermittent fasting changes, water fasting changes, exercise, and all of these attempts to reduce dietary excess,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “All of them are essentially trying to reduce inflammation, get rid of gut leakage, and give the body a chance to heal itself from the consequences of a highly processed food diet, whether it's processed animal foods or processed plant-based foods.”Enjoy! Ep 779Women, Fasting, Keto & Cancer – Amy Robach with Dave Asprey : 779

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with well-known journalist Amy Robach, who’s covered major national and global news events and people over the past 20 years. Her most important story, however, came when she had an on-air mammogram at age 40 and was shockingly diagnosed with breast cancer. We go into her lifestyle since the diagnosis, which has radically changed, and now is based in keto and intermittent fasting.Amy got an on-air mammogram to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month for a special news program in September 2013. She was 40, had never had a mammogram before and had no family history of breast cancer. Two years later, Amy wrote a memoir about the experience: “Better: How I Let Go of Control, Held On To Hope, and Found Joy in My Darkest Hour.” The whole notion of the book, she says, is to “take that fear and have it be that wake-up call, for you to live better.”"What am I going to do with this fear?,” Amy asked herself. “Am I going to let it cripple me or am I going to let it motivate me, A, to live better, and B, to do everything I can to be as healthy and as strong and as fit as possible if I get that bad news one of these days?"When she was first diagnosed she felt crippled by that fear. In the beginning, she felt weak and sorry for herself, not even able to trust her own body. But over time, she found the energy she needed. She changed every part of her life: Food, fitness, family, and her attitude. She went on Keto and started intermittent fasting. She doesn’t sweat the small stuff anymore. “If everything had gone great and I had not gotten cancer, I know I wouldn't be who I am today from a physical standpoint, from a mental standpoint, from a spiritual standpoint,” she says.Amy and I get into how she balances an incredibly demanding career, a blended family and her wellness—and how keto and intermittent fasting help her do it. In pretty remarkable ways. “I remember especially when I started doing keto and intermittent fasting, seeing my brain come back to me was everything, everything,” Amy says. Her mom and dad (in their 60s) even got on board to support her and made remarkable changes in their own health. Check out her mom’s website for a ton of recipes: https://myketohome.com.She has set up her life in a beautiful way, and has wisdom, energy and advice for anyone just trying to make a change in their own life. “It was freedom,” Amy says. “That was one of my favorite unexpected joys from fasting and keto.”Enjoy! Ep 778Bad Science and Diet Lies Keep Feeding Obesity: Gary Taubes with Dave Asprey : 778

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Gary Taubes, an award-winning (and my all-time favorite) scienceand health journalist widely known for his investigative work on the food and diet industries. He explains how the conventional thinking on obesity has led to 60 years of controversy, the on-going “diet wars,” and the current obesity and diabetes epidemics. You may know his previous book, “The Case Against Sugar,” which exposed the harsh dangers of sugar in our diets. He’s on this episode with his new book, “The Case For Keto.” “The nutritional and academic authorities have failed us, and they and we should acknowledge that,” he says. “Had they not failed us, we would, almost by definition, never have reached this point of epidemic obesity.”Decades of bad science within the mainstream medical community led to all sorts of bad advice from doctors on how patients should diet and manage their overall nutrition. In this episode we talk about the decades of those misconceptions:How authorities from the 1820s onward, and clinical trials from the 1930s onward, reported that people with obesity could lose weight “as if by magic” if they just abstained from carbohydrates and replaced those calories with fat.How the fat shaming so prevalent in our society stems directly from the conventional thinking on obesity, that we get fat because we consume more calories than we expend, that we overeat. Why trying to lose weight by eating less and exercising more—trying to create and maintain a calorie deficit—will make us hungry, but not lean. Why tens of thousands of physicians worldwide have taken, specifically, to eating ketogenic diets—"keto,” very low in carbohydrates, high in fat—and why they now prescribe this way of eating to their patients.“People do fad diets, because the conventional wisdom doesn't work,” Gary says. “You do exactly what you're told to do and all it does is keep you fat and make you hungry. You feel bad about yourself because you blame yourself for failing. Any reasonable person in that circumstance is going to look for another approach.”So, how can we move forward on a better path? I’m so excited for you to listen and find out.Gary’s work is some of the best at breaking everything down in order to reveal the truth. And in this case, you’ll learn from him how he found out that a low-carb/high-fat diet makes you healthier, controls blood sugar and blood pressure, diminishes chronic pain, reduces weight, and improves heart disease risk. Ep 777When Mother Nature Says, ‘I’m Out,’ Geoengineering Hacks Will Fix Our Planet: Thomas Kostigen with Dave Asprey : 777

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I talk with Thomas Kostigen about how there’s no returning to nature as we knew it. His current work focuses on climate disaster and emergency preparedness. And to write his newest book, “Hacking Planet Earth: How Geoengineering Can Help Us Reimagine the Future”, Thomas went to the frontlines of geoengineering projects that scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers, and other visionaries around the world are developing to solve the problems associated with global warming. “My book is based in rigorous science and all the methodologies that are in it are backed by serious scientists who have certain solutions,” Thomas said. “Geoengineering is controversial by its very nature, by certain segments, not only of the environmental movement but others.”A New York Times bestselling author, award-winning National Geographic writer, activist and journalist, Thomas has reported from war zones to the world's wonders across five continents. He’s now looking at what space and the future may hold. A space umbrella? Laser lightning rod? Lotus tower? Ice Stupa? Ever heard of these? Well, they might be the next tools and technologies we use to fix our planet.“We have to shift the conversation from what's far out there to what's reasonable, and what can we do in the here and the now,” he says. “We have to deal with what's in front of us today, but we also have to look at it as a learning mechanism for tomorrow.”In “Hacking Planet Earth,” Thomas examines the furthest out-there and most forward-thinking fixes for our climate that go beyond carbon emission and waste mitigation.“Fate cannot be left to chance any longer," he says. …" It is time to turn our collective attention toward supporting industry and encouraging the business community, scientists and technologists—innovators!—to step up and do what they do best: invent, pioneer, disrupt the same old ways of doing things.”Our discussion dives into geoengineering and other technologies that could protect our planet. Thomas also talks about the importance of using today’s virtual modeling technology to inform those solutions, and their consequences. These futurist, world-changing ideas will save us, he says. On today’s show, we’ll learn why he thinks so."Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" efforts aren't enough anymore,” Thomas says. “These individual efforts are a necessary part of the fight against climate change, but it’s time to think bigger—much bigger.”Enjoy! Ep 776Censorship Costs Lives: Brian Rose Keeps it Real in London with Dave Asprey : 776

This episode of Bulletproof Radio is a little different. I’m featuring Brian Rose, the founder, CEO and host of the wildly popular London Real podcast, livestream platform, TV show and multi-media company. He’s a great friend, longtime supporter and the current frontrunner in London’s political race for mayor. Brian left a career in banking that spanned Chicago, New York and London to start the London Real podcast in 2011. He wanted to broadcast content he couldn’t find in the mainstream media. His aim was to have real conversations with real people, so his show featured guests that could come on and speak in unscripted, unedited and uncensored ways. “I do not agree with everything you say,” he proclaims, “but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”With that mindset, he’s created a multi-media business reaching billions (yes, billions) of people around the globe.“And then 2020 came,” Brian says. “And there was a lot of fear out there. And people didn't know who to trust and people weren't trusting the mainstream media. They weren't trusting the governments. And so we decided to start having voices on that might offer some alternative opinions.” In April, one of the YouTube London Real episodes was deleted and banned without notice because “it violated their community guidelines.” After nine years on a channel with half a billion views, Brian realized just how heavily censorship limited the content he could create.“I soon realized that censorship was real,” Brian says. “We got censored on Facebook, on Instagram, I got kicked off of LinkedIn, my TED Talk disappeared off their channel for about a week, PayPal, Vimeo pulled my videos, Dropbox pulled my account.” So, he took action and created his own livestream platform, raising a million dollars in 11 days for what’s now called the Digital Freedom Platform. There, he’s interviewed Nobel Prize winners, scientists, doctors, nurses, professors emeritus from MIT, four star generals and more. But that’s not all. He wants to make change on an even more massive scale, so he’s running to be mayor of Londonas an independent candidate. Through his Transform London 2021 plan executed with strong leadership, he believes he can make London a world-class capital city once again and one of the most desirable places in the world to live, work and visit.“Our mission statement on the wall [at London Real] is to create a mass scale transformation of humanity into a fully empowered conscious and cooperative species,” says Brian. “But being mayor of London is the way I could really, really do that. So, it's exciting. It's scary. It's nerve wracking, it's uncomfortable, but I love it.”I can’t wait for you to hear this episode, where Brian and I talk about censorship, current events, and his larger plans for transforming London.  Enjoy! Ep 775You’re Actually Not a Badass and Here’s Why – Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 775

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest, Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., is a humanistic psychologist exploring the depths of human potential. We go way beyond basic needs and discuss how to get close to transcendence. Hint: you get to change (or even drop) the story you tell about yourself. It’s one of the hard parts of self-actualization, but worth it to move your life forward. When Scott discovered Abraham Maslow's unfinished theory of transcendence through unpublished journals, lectures and essays, he felt a deep connection to his own work. Maslow is most famous for his theory on the hierarchy of needs “We can harness [Maslow’s theory of] transcendence in our lives and we can be motivated by what he called the B values, the values of pure being, the values in life that you don't engage with and you're not one with because you want something else,” Scott says.Scott’s curiosity led him to finish Maslow’s theory and update it with seven decades of new science that’s been discovered since. The result is Scott’s new book, “Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization.”I took Scott’s free self-actualization test, and we explore my results in today’s discussion. Scott has great insights about how to approach vulnerability with yourself and others, self-awareness, attachment and other critical pieces of human growth and personal development. “A lot of people don't realize that they can actually divorce their mind and have a lot more psychological free will,” he says. “Sometimes I think it's an act of craziness to exert it.”Scott unravels the mysteries of Maslow’s unfinished theory and integrates these ideas with the latest research on connection, creativity, love, purpose and other building blocks of a life well lived, and gives science-backed suggestions, including:Fight familiarization and seek fresh experiences. Periodically get away from time-and-space concerns. Get out of the “deficiency realm” by deliberately going to the “being realm.” “These aren't necessarily things that are going to make you happy,” Scott says. “Again, we're going through the difference between happiness and growth, but they're things that will help you grow. They really will. They'll help you get outside your comfort zone.”Scott has been named one of "50 Groundbreaking Scientists who are changing the way we see the world" by Business Insider. He’s hosted “The Psychology Podcast” since 2014 and wrote the popular “Beautiful Minds” blog for Scientific American for close to a decade. Enjoy! Ep 773Trigger Autophagy Without Fasting – Dr. Elizabeth Yurth Talks Spermidine with Dave Asprey : 773

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Dr. Elizabeth Yurth explains how spermidine, a substance found in the human body and almost all plants and animals, can slow down the cellular aging process and influence your overall health.“Where we see spermidine work is at a very, very base level to correct the autophagy to get rid of those bad mitochondria so that now we're not being overwhelmed by reactive oxygen species,” Dr. Yurth says. “We actually will start to recycle the bad parts of the cell and start with a new cell at that point.” Dr. Yurth is medical director/chief medical officer at Boulder Longevity Institute, and a partner with Longevity Labs+, the company that’s been pioneering spermidine research for the last decade and focuses their research on the improvement of aging. So what does spermidine do? Most importantly, it regulates a cell renewal process called autophagy, one of the most touted benefits of fasting.Spermidine helps you take control of the aging process.SpermidineLIFE® is the first naturally extracted and clinically tested dietary supplement to promote cellular renewal after multiple studies, trials and 10 years of research.People in clinical trials reported better memory, better sleep, more energy, reduced brain fog, improved skin and hair, and more. “Spermidine’s working on so many pathways to reduce reactive oxygen species, to improve the immune health, and to reduce the inflammatory cytokines that we know are initiated in these disease processes,” Dr. Yurth says.Spermidine is an important part of the body’s cellular processes that:Support healthy cell agingHave preventive effects on age-related diseasesIncrease life expectancy and liver protectionPromote healthy weightNormalize bone densityReduce age-dependent muscular atrophyEnhance growth of hair, skin, and nails“Every single species, every one-cell organism. Everybody has this, so we know it’s critical to life," Dr. Yurth says. "We absolutely know it’s critical to life.”Enjoy! Ep 772How to Get Fitter Cells, Stronger Muscles and a Longer Life – Timeline Nutrition with Dave Asprey : 772

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’ve invited two experts who know a lot about plants and how plants interact with our cell biology. We discuss the exciting new discovery of a molecule called Urolithin A that’s a breakthrough in mitochondrial health. Urolithin A promotes mitochondrial function, muscle strength and longevity. Navindra Seeram, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Rhode Island and is one of the most highly cited scientists in Agricultural Sciences. With a background in cell and molecular biology, biomedical engineering and engineering, Chris Rinsch, Ph.D., has been immersed in the biotech and life sciences industry for more than two decades. Our conversation centers on Mitopure™, the first clinically tested Urolithin A available through Timeline Nutrition. One of the most important things Urolithin A does is revitalize the energy factories inside our cells. Each of our cells contain mitochondria, and the cell has an innate process of cleaning up the damaged mitochondria and recycling them. This process is called mitophagy. Urolithin A supports cellular health by stimulating mitophagy to keep cells fit and running efficiently.“It's really important to keep your mitochondria at its peak performance,” Chris says, “no matter what your general health conditions are.”Urolithin A is generated by the gut microflora as a natural food metabolite of ellagitannins, a class of compounds found in the pomegranate and other fruits, nuts and tea. Their studies have shown some pretty amazing results.“We saw that when we started incubating and feeding worms with Urolithin A they were increasing their lifespan by about 50 percent,” Chris says. “And when the studies moved to mice, they ran 40 percent further and longer after taking the Urolithin A.”Listen on to find out more about how Urolithin A is such a breakthrough for mitochondrial health and how it’s a game changer for cellular nutrition.Enjoy! Ep 771Control Stress and Regulate Your Nervous System in 5 Steps – Lisa Wimberger with Dave Asprey : 771

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Lisa Wimberger was struck by lightning at age 15 and lived. That lightning strike set in motion a grand mal seizure disorder that she lived with for the next two decades and ultimately influenced her life’s work with neuroplasticity. The seizures became life threatening, but that condition inspired her to find ways to protect and rebuild her body and mind. She went on to explore neuroplasticity, a process that helped her to disrupt her seizures.“There's a seizure halo from stress and maladaptive vagal tone and then there's a seizure. Well, there's a gap in space and time between those two things and it might be a fraction a second, but that is a response pattern that I've gotten really good at. Neuroplasticity says I can change those things. It doesn't tell me how exactly, but I'm going to figure it out. I had all of this meditation that I was not using for my well-being, and then all of the science, and I just backwards engineered.”The most profound insight she learned was that the way she was meditating was actually harmful to her. “When you hear the word meditation, it's not one size fits all,” Lisa says. “There's all different kinds and you have to know what works for your body.” Lisa founded the NeuroSculpting® Institute in Colorado, where she teaches people and organizations who suffer from stress disorders, including law enforcement teams. She created NeuroSculpting®, a 5-step meditation process that can help an individual release the grip of old patterns and entrain their brain to creating new and more supportive patterns, habits and behaviors. “The benefits are you still get to hack into your nervous system, and you get to file down the sharp edges of any thought that might have triggered you into arousal at any point in time, or you can create brand new thoughts,” she says. “Neuroplasticity doesn't care if it's an experience you've never had or an experience you've had. It only cares that you're programming it with buy-in, and it's going to store that in your mind as a pattern.”Lisa earned a master’s degree in Education, a Foundations Certification in NeuroLeadership, and certificates in medical neuroscience, visual perception, and the brain, and neurobiology. She’s written numerous books on neuroplasticity and stress management, including Neurosculpting: A Whole-Brain Approach to Heal Trauma, Rewrite Limiting Beliefs, and Find Wholeness and New Beliefs, New Brain: Free Yourself from Stress and Fear. She’s also co-creator of a digital app made up of interactive NeuroSculpting® modules that shift brain neuroplasticity and support well-being, called NeuroPraxis. This unique app helps people re-pattern trauma and nervous system suffering through guided meditation.Listen today as we talk about Lisa’s discoveries in brain entrainment, stress management and meditation practices that do no harm.Enjoy! Ep 770Your Guide to Psychedelic Psychotherapy – Dr. Phil Wolfson with Dave Asprey : 770

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Phil Wolfson, the creator of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. He shares his vast knowledge about the benefits of ketamine, and other healing chemicals like mushrooms or MDMA, as a treatment for depression, PTSD, addiction and other conditions. Dr. Wolfson leads patients through psychedelic psychotherapy sessions, guiding them through their past and present in an open, altered state of mind.Dr. Wolfson is a specialist in psychedelic psychotherapy, a practicing Buddhist, and a “psychonaut.” His invaluable work is the result of an intense, many-decades-long clinical psychiatry/psychotherapy practice that focuses on new pathways for healing.“There's really no right or wrong with psychedelics,” Dr. Wolfson says. “They have special properties. People go through either a low dose or moderate to high dose experience. That experience is separated from your life here. And then the real work is the integration as people come back, [asking] How am I different? What have I learned from this?”For example, in the first hour of mushrooms or psilocybin, you're going to go through a psychological scrape, he says. “All the misdeeds, and things you owe to people, and how you've been hurt or hurt others.”“It's about how do we integrate our lives and relationship in this very difficult time with people and in our beings, and what practices we bring to this whole thing. So, it's not just about substances.”“We use our medicines in a sacred way,” Dr. Wolfson says. “We're not doing traditional medicine; we're not doing intravenous anesthesiology practices. We bring people in, we do invocation. We help people move into a state of contemplation before we do substances.”He’s also the CEO of the non-profit Ketamine Research Foundation, the director of the Center for Transformational Psychotherapy and a founding member of the Heffter Research Institute (HRI), a non-profit scientific organization. HRI has been helping design, review and fund the leading studies on psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms) at research institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Wolfson leads the newly founded Indra’s Net Coalition, which brings people around the world together in the midst of crisis for healing, self-expression and connection.“Indrasnetcoalition.org is a worldwide universal concept about connection,” he says. “It's about forming a network that is exists because we're all connected.” Enjoy! Ep 769How Trauma Travels Through Generations and Changes Your Genes – Rachel Yehuda, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 769

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I dive into an intriguing discussion about trauma with my guest, Rachel Yehuda, Ph.D. We touch on what her latest research is uncovering about the role epigenetics plays in trauma and how to identify signs of trauma in your own life. “Trauma affects everybody,” Rachel says. “Having a traumatic event will definitely change you in some way in terms of how you view the world.”RRachel is a professor and vice-chair of Psychiatry and professor of Neuroscience at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Her work focuses on the fields of psychology, trauma, and epigenetic research. She has authored more than 300 high-cited journal articles and book chapters and developed fascinating insights about risk and resilience. Her research on cortisol and brain function has revolutionized the understanding and treatment of PTSD worldwide. With her in-depth knowledge of PTSD and epigenetics, Rachel walks us through how our parents' traumas can be passed down through the generations and how those triggers that you're working on today may not have originated in your lifetime. "It's not just that you carry the genes of your parents,” Rachel says. “You carry their history. You carry a lot of the sum total of their experiences."We also discuss:The often misunderstood role that cortisol plays in the stress response and how this "stress-hormone" may be better identified as an anti-stress hormone. How previously banned drugs like MDMA, DMT, and psilocybin may hold therapeutic potential for people working through traumas, and the road ahead for research into these drugs. The importance of finding the right practitioner to work with you on traumas that you may experience or have emerge in your life. Enjoy! Ep 768New Solutions for the Growing Food Allergy Epidemic – Dr. Kari Nadeau with Dave Asprey : 768

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we take a look at how and why food allergies affect so many of us. Conquering mine has helped me immensely on my Bulletproof journey and I want to share a conversation that could help you do the same.Dr. Kari Nadeau is considered one of the world’s leading experts on food allergy, and is the author of the new book “"The End of Food Allergy, featuring Immunotherapy: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse a 21st-Century Epidemic". For more than 30 years she’s focused her expertise on the environmental and genetic factors that affect the risk of developing allergies and asthma, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the diseases. Allergies play a growing role in every part of our lives. They happen because of the products we put on our skin, the foods we eat every single day, and the products we use in our home and work environment. Dr. Nadeau offers ways to spot the allergens all around you.“We have the science,” Dr. Nadeau says. “We should do better and make people's quality of life better in general: on the therapy side, on the convention side, as well as on the diagnostic side.”Here are some quick allergy facts:One in three Americans has some form of allergies. It is estimated that one in 20 adults in America (5%) has a food allergy and 1 in 13 children in the U.S. suffers from food allergy The rate of people with food allergies is doubling approximately every 10 years. Adults with food allergies have a 65% chance of passing those allergies to their children. 90% of food allergies are caused by the following 8 allergenic foods: cow’s milk, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, egg. “If you don't treat your body well within any given year, you might develop a food allergy,” Dr. Nadeau says. “You've got to take care of yourself because any one person can develop a food allergy newly, even if they didn't have an allergy before. This is a growing epidemic; it's just not a US-based disease anymore. It's growing around the world.” In the midst of a growing epidemic, Dr. Nadeau shares information about a potential upcoming treatment process that could help you find out what your allergies are, manage them if you already have them and potentially end them.Listen on to find out the differences between food sensitivities and allergies, thresholds for bodily stress, and ways we can both cure and prevent asthma and allergies. Ep 767How Hacking Your Gut Bacteria Can Regulate Your Blood Sugar – Colleen Cutcliffe, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 767

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Colleen Cutcliffe, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Pendulum Therapeutics. We explore exciting new discoveries in the body’s gut microbiome and discuss how Pendulum is disrupting what we know about probiotics.Pendulum uses biological and computational insights into the microbiome to develop solutions for health and disease conditions. “Rather than calling a disease by what the symptoms are, we are actually looking at the microbiome as an underlying infrastructure within our body,” Colleen says. Pendulum also identifies and isolates new bacterial strains, then combines those new strains to create unique probiotics. These are backed by clinical research studies. Using this discovery platform, Pendulum created the world’s first microbiome intervention for people with Type 2 Diabetes. “Managing your blood sugar is at the core of so many health issues, including your immune system,” Colleen says. “You really are more vulnerable and susceptible when you're not managing your blood sugars properly.”In Pendulum’s clinical testing, they found out some interesting things.“We have people with type 2 diabetes on multiple drugs,” Colleen says. “We have people with pre-diabetes who are looking to avoid crossing over into taking drugs. And we've had people who are healthy that are really concerned about “how is my body metabolizing sugar and fibers.” And so we offer free A1c testing, actually at baseline, and then three months in so that people can see their results. And I think that really helps people kind of believe the results that they're experiencing.”Our conversation goes in a lot of directions related to the science of gut health–both your inner environment and the one around you. We’re learning so much, so fast, that science is seeing all sorts of connections. The gut microbiome is the frontier of how we’ll define better health.“Where we're heading is understanding that the microbiome is foundational in a lot of things like the immune response, allergies, digestion, metabolism, and that once you start to make sure that you have the right flora and all the right plants in your garden, you're actually going to be tackling a lot of these different things,” Colleen says. “And so, you won't have to have a specific thing for every disease because I think we're going to transform the way we think about disease.”Enjoy! Ep 766Better Gut Health Using Oxygen and Iodine – Dr. Edward Group with Dave Asprey : 766

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Edward Group, founder of the Global Healing Center. We talk about why disease and longevity begin in the gut and ways to keep your gut healthy through processes you’ve probably never heard of before. He’s “educating people on the root cause of disease and how they can clean up their external environment and how they can clean up their internal environment at the same time and take back control of their health and reactivate their body's self-healing mechanism.”“Ninety percent of all the chemicals and toxins enter through the intestinal tract,” Dr. Group explains. He’s developed a unique form of oxygen to cleanse the digestive tract. This is paired with an active form of iodine that helps detoxify and helps repair any damaged tissue a lot faster.”Dr. Group’s background is in chiropractic and naturopathic care, nutrition and functional medicine, but he’s worked in all sorts of spaces in between. He’s closely followed the work of Tesla and even has his own “Men in Black”-type story from his early research work.We talk about his founding of the Global Healing Center, a nutrition and alternative medicine company that provides natural dietary/immune supplements and detox/cleanse programs, where he’s been CEO for 22 years. The Center’s began its own organic farm in 2009, which grew into a larger eco-manufacturing facility that makes products with pure, organic, and plant-based ingredients that can help you on your gut-healing journey. His personal mission is to teach and promote philosophies that produce good health, a clean environment, and positive thinking.Dr. Group has authored several publications and is a frequent guest on radio, TV programs and documentary films. He’s dedicated to helping others through his work and talks all about ways you can tune into greater healing on his YouTube Channel (with more than 25 million views). “Some of the cheapest, most effective things like diatomaceous activated charcoal, sunlight, water, meditation, these are all things that don't cost any money yet have profound healing effects on the body,” Dr. Group says.In this episode, Dr. Group and I cover a lot of ground. Everything from the intensity of the energy present in meditation to the ways you can profoundly heal your body. Ep 764Love is the Way: Hope for Ourselves and Others – Bishop Michael B. Curry with Dave Asprey : 764

In this special Thanksgiving episode of Bulletproof Radio, I wanted to bring things back to center with a focus on love and community after the wild year of change and stress we’ve had. Giving and receiving love is one of the most important ways we can be better humans.“Beyond our national identities and loyalties, beyond our political sympathies and ideologies, beyond our religious and spiritual convictions and commitments, there is a universal hunger at the heart of every human being: to love and to be loved,” says Bishop Michael B. Curry. “It connects all people of faith, hope, and good will.”I’m so pleased to be talking to Bishop Curry about this. He’s been the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church since 2015 and is the first African-American to lead the denomination. He’s recognized as one of the most popular preachers in the English language. He’s served parish ministries for more than 40 years. Throughout his ministry, he’s been an advocate for human rights and active in issues of social justice, reconciliation, speaking out on immigration policy and marriage equality. He maintains a national preaching and teaching ministry and has authored five books. His newest book, “Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times,” touches on the three kinds of love: eros, which is romantic; philia, the fraternal, brotherly love; and agape, unselfish, sacrificial love that seeks the well-being of others.“They are all related,” Bishop Curry says. “They all have the same source.”I learned a new way of looking at love during my conversation with Bishop Curry. I hope you do, too. Happy Thanksgiving to you and those you love.Enjoy! Ep 763What To Do About Things You Didn’t See Coming – Rachel Hollis with Dave Asprey : 763

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I asked Rachel Hollis to come on the show today to talk about the new book she wrote during the pandemic. “Didn’t See That Coming: Putting Life Back Together When Your World Falls Apart” captures the pain of the past year and offers ways to look at the lessons and growth, then move through it to something new. “2020... what a year, right? Rachel says. “It's been so freaking hard for so many people, but even in the hardship, there's beauty. We've seen humans doing incredible things, and our essential workers, and our healthcare workers and people are so inspiring. We've had more time to connect with our families, and just all of these things.”Rachel is one of the most sought-after speakers, plays host to one of today’s top business podcasts, and uses her platform to empower and embolden women around the world. She laid the foundation for her lifestyle brand and media company with the same unfiltered honesty and staunch inclusivity that made her a New York Times bestselling author of “Girl, Wash Your Face” and “Girl, Stop Apologizing.” In both, she shared her most personal stories.“The reality is that every new level you get to, there's an old expression in church that says, new levels, new devils, so every level that you get to, you're going to encounter new hardships,” she says.“The first thing is you have to be honest about what actually is happening, not what you are telling yourself is happening, because when I think of the question of, everything feels hard, for me, what I want to follow that up with is, is everything hard, or does everything feel hard?" Rachel says. "Those are two completely different things.”We talk about all the ways you are so much more than the trauma you are living in, whatever that trauma might be. You can let go of guilt, hack your courage and show up for yourself, your family and your community. You can choose joy even when life sucks.Enjoy! And get more resources at https://blog.daveasprey.com/category/podcasts/WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 762Change Your State of Mind, No Drugs Required – Hapbee with Dave Asprey : 762

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re going to take a dive into wearable tech. And while you’ve heard a lot about tech that can help biohack your physiology on Bulletproof Radio over nearly 800 episodes, this one has a unique blueprint. It’s a mood ring for your mind. What you want to do is actually change your biology and you can use data to do that. You also can use wearables that directly put signals into your body. This company achieves that with a device called Hapbee that allows you to choose your feelings on demand with the help of ultra-low energy magnetic fields.Hapbee delivers safe, comfortable feelings to your body at the click of a button. I think it’s one of the next frontiers of biohacking.CEO Scott Donnell is with me to explain how and why this actually works.“If you can influence a cell with a subtle magnetic field, it's like, "Oh, I need to do more of this,” Scott says. “it changes how you feel no drugs or anything ingestible required.”We talk science and we talk feelings. These are not mutually exclusive. We also show how the Hapbee can give you benefits every day like being alert, sleepy, calm, focused, happy and relaxed.“If a protein receptor can change its shape, it can trigger a whole world of metabolic effects and hormones and RNA and things like that,” Scott says. “And that's what we're doing.”Scott is a serial entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to both physical and mental health. He founded Hapbee in 2004 and has been working on this tech ever since. The most significant milestones have all been achieved in 2020, with the company just recently going public. He also shares how Hapbee got him through a stressful year of workload and personal loss.Enjoy! Ep 761Your Body, Your Choice: Take Control of Your Personal Health Data – Base with Dave Asprey : 761

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re talking about ways that you can take charge of your own health data and measure what you want, when you want with at-home testing paired with a data-science app.My guest is Lola Priego, founder of Base. She got frustrated with a personal health challenge and used her extensive tech background, medical training and creative problem solving to find a solution. That solution not only helped her; it’s now helping many others. She realized how access to personal health data was key to get to the root cause of symptoms and improve with nutritional, lifestyle and supplement changes. So, she developed a data-driven approach to health monitoring. Base applies tech and data science capabilities to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. It’s a data-driven approach to sleep, stress, energy, and diet with lab testing and data-science.“We definitely see a lot of people desperate,” Lola says. “I was desperate myself, but I was even more frustrated, just seeing all of the tools available at a big tech company that were not used for the right things.”Base offers science-based results and recommendations based on continuous blood and saliva at-home testing. It’s an at-home bio-marker testing paired with an app for tracking.“We believe in continuous monitoring and testing to get to the root cause of your symptoms or to just monitor the things that you care about,” Lola says. “Continuous testing is the way to improve, really learn about your body and learn what things work for you. Because it's not a one size fits all.”Enjoy! Ep 760How Fasting Can Beat Genetics and Control Cancer – Dr. Jason Fung with Dave Asprey : 760

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Jason Fung, a Canadian nephrologist known as a pioneer in intermittent fasting in a clinical setting. He’s co-founder and chairman of The Fasting Method. He’s now turned his attention to cancer with his new book: “The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery.”A completely new and fascinating concept of cancer has emerged. The evolutionary concept of cancer maintains that cancer already exists buried deep into every cell of every multicellular animal, and its development is driven by Darwinian selection pressure. Dr. Fung is the site chief of medicine at Scarborough General Hospital; scientific editor of the Journal of Insulin Resistance; and a kidney specialist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His specialty is in intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. His groundbreaking work in the treatment of obesity and diabetes has won him international acclaim. He’s the author of several bestselling books on fasting, as well as the “The Obesity Code” and “The Diabetes Code.”“Obesity related cancers are actually starting to sort of move their way back up, which is of course very concerning,” Dr. Fung says. “Liver cancer has tripled in the last 20 years. And this is directly related to the obesity epidemic, as well as this sort of epidemic of type 2 diabetes that we're getting.”“And in cancer, it's different because insulin is also a growth factor,” he says. “So, not only is it important for weight gain metabolism, but it's also a growth factor. When you start to have too much insulin, then not only does it lead to the obesity type 2 diabetes, but it's also going to tip the scales in terms of growth, which is going to tip the scale in favor of cancer.”“There’s something that you can do–stop feeding the growth of cancer. It’s within your control.”Enjoy! And get more resources at https://blog.daveasprey.com/category/podcasts/WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 759Put on Some Weight for Better Sleep and Less Stress – Baloo Living with Dave Asprey : 759

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is a seeker with a success story. And that story includes creating a weighted blanket that will change the way you sleep. After 15 years searching for fulfillment through her career—in politics, publishing, finance and start-ups, Elizabeth Grojean detached from life in the city to look within. She headed to Bali where she focused on meditation, yoga, healing and finding a new way of living—one rooted in connection, generosity and mindfulness. On that foundation, she created the sleep and wellness company Baloo Living and launched a weighted blanket as her first product. It's a year-round self-care tool.Studies show that pressure touch stimulates serotonin in the body. By using a weighted blanket, “it becomes faster and easier to go to sleep,” Elizabeth explains. “There's a very subtle but sudden physical, physiological response that happens. The pressure on the body is letting you know that it's safe to relax that fight or flight response.”Within months of its 2018 launch, Baloo earned a reputation as one of the top brands on the market, where it remains. Elizabeth doesn’t compromise when it comes to materials or experience. “The idea of doing something good for yourself by using a bag of plastic felt so negative to me in terms of the environmental aspect of that,” she says. “Energetically, I just didn't like the idea of that at all.” Instead, Baloo’s blankets use materials certified to be free of chemicals and toxins. From tips on finding yourself, entrepreneurship and how to ease your anxiety and sleep better with a weighted blanket, you’re going to learn a lot in this episode from Elizabeth’s path.Enjoy! Ep 758Energy Economics: Your Focus is Your Money Flow – Pedram Shojai with Dave Asprey : 758

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Pedram Shojai, O.M.D., a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Master Herbalist and acupuncturist. We talk about his new book, “FOCUS: Bringing Time, Energy and Money into Flow” and how you can bring your attention in line with your intention to get the life you want.Pedram is a New York Times bestselling author of “The Urban Monk” and founder of Well.org. He is an acclaimed Qigong Master and Taoist Abbot with a practical approach to modern living. In our unpredictable and continually changing world, we are constantly in a state of figuring out how to sow our seeds for a happy life, which necessitates tending to the needs of our health, career, family and friends, passions, and desires. Unfortunately, time never seems to be on our side, and if anything, often it seems out of our control. But what if you had the ability to take control of how you trade your energy for time and to increase your body’s “energy budget?”“Once you get your life lined and you figure out where you want your energy to go, it's like cash in the pocket,” Pedram says. “It doesn't hurt to have more once your economics are fixed, and that's where I think a lot of people lose it is their focus is everywhere so their life is everywhere, and they don't get the life that they say they want because they're just not focusing on their priorities. They're not focusing on their life.”Your life circles around an exchange of time, money, and energy.“In Chinese medicine we say the Qi follows the Shen, the spirit,” Pedram says. “Spirit is the attention housed in the heart. So where your focus goes, your energy goes, and if you can sustain your focus, the energy that you're generating through the cells of your body, through the mitochondria, through this miraculous thing called life, continues to go to where your focus goes, and then the material universe starts to assemble around that.” Enjoy! Ep 757Psychedelics Offer New Solutions for Social Isolation – Dr. Julie Holland with Dave Asprey : 757

Psychedelics Offer New Solutions for Social Isolation – Dr. Julie Holland with Dave Asprey – #757In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest today is psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist Dr. Julie Holland. In her newest book, “Good Chemistry: The Science of Connection, From Soul to Psychedelics,” she explains why we need connection, how we’ve lost it, and how we might find it again. She believes psychedelics can help.“We're really not built to be isolated,” Dr. Holland explains. “We're social primates, we're built for connection. It's how we survive.”Dr. Holland stands on the frontlines of some of the nation’s leading and most exciting research surrounding psychedelic medicine and connection. “If we ever needed less suffering and more creativity, it is now. We need outside-the- box solutions to our current psychospiritual problems,” she says. Psychedelic medicines, taken under the direction of a trained psychiatrist, can catalyze a connection with the self, nature, or the cosmos. Dr. Holland reveals how we can “turn on” and “tune in” to the brain chemistry that supports connection and tamp down the fight or flight mode that derails sleep, metabolism, libido and much more. She helps us understand that our behaviors are driven by the hormones and neurotransmitters that make up good (and bad) brain chemistry, including; testosterone, estrogen, dopamine, serotonin and most crucially, oxytocin.“The thing that we really haven't heard enough about and that I am sort of preaching is the parasympathetic nervous system,” Dr. Holland says. “It's the exact opposite of fight or flight. It's not all about attacking and running away. Sometimes survival is about staying and connecting and collaborating, getting input from people, making good decisions.”“The parasympathetic is where the body can repair itself and it's also where we can repair our relationships,” she says. “It's where we can sort of tend and befriend and mend the connections, it's where we can be social.”Listen on to the end to hear Dr. Holland’s top three recommendations for enhancing connection in your life.Enjoy! Ep 7563 Simple Tools That Banish Loneliness and Strengthen Connection – Dr. Vivek Murthy with Dave Asprey : 756

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Vivek Murthy and I talk about a topic that often doesn’t get talked about–loneliness. People often don’t know how to define it; they just know they feel it. Sometimes people are afraid to admit it. It also harms people’s health, productivity, and happiness.I was intrigued by Dr. Vivek Murthy’s book “Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World.”Dr. Murthy is an internal medicine physician who served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States appointed by President Barack Obama. During his service, he visited communities all over the United States to find out what health issues concerned people most. “To my surprise, the topic of emotional well-being, in general, and loneliness in particular, received the strongest response from the public of any issues I worked on as surgeon general,” Dr. Murthy says in his book. “It’s a universal condition that affects all of us directly or through the people we love.”He also saw a common thread of loneliness when he took care of patients in private medical practice. His work with loneliness obviously leads to the power of connection. Human connection is critical to our health, its value is often overlooked, and it couldn’t be more timely to talk about right now.“During this global pandemic, people have actually been pulled even further apart in some ways,” Dr. Murthy says. “We're not able to see each other as readily as we were able to before. That has introduced an even deeper element of loneliness into many people's lives. My worry is that if we don't do anything differently, if we don't recognize what's happening, then we will experience a deepening of that loneliness and trigger something that I think of as a social recession.”He also says that loneliness is a great masquerader: it can look like anger, boredom, depression or anxiety. There’s no shame in identifying loneliness for what it is, which is, in fact, a common human condition. And with awareness, we can name it and take steps to shore up our social connections. There are many tips in this episode to help you foster deeper connections and improve your well-being.“If we harness the power of social connection and recognize just how much it could impact our health, our performance and our sense of fulfillment, then we could improve our lives in extraordinary ways,” Dr. Murthy says.Enjoy! Ep 755How Friendships Improve Your Health and Help You Live Longer – Lydia Denworth with Dave Asprey : 755

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Lydia Denworth, author of “Friendship: The Evolution, Biology, and Extraordinary Power of Life’s Fundamental Bond.” Our discussion explores how friendship influences the human experience and contributes to our health, especially in this time of social distancing. In fact, friendship is as important as food and fitness.Throughout human history, family and romantic relationships have gotten all the attention. Friendships weren’t even considered essential. That’s all changing now as scientific study digs into the biological, psychological, and emotional effects of friendship. Scientists can now define and measure it. And they are finding that friendship quality matters much more than quantity–sorry, not sorry, social media.“The biological part of it is that we now understand that friendship is as important for your health as diet and exercise,” Lydia says. “And it gets under your skin as scientists say. It really affects your health on all kinds of levels: your immune system, your stress, your cardiovascular system, your mental health and cognitive health,” Lydia says. “And the fact that it does that–that a relationship that exists outside the body entirely can get in and change how your health works–seems to me a sign that this is something that is really critical and that is deserving a far more respect and attention than we tend to give it.”Lydia is an acclaimed science journalist and contributing editor at Scientific American where she covers the brain and psychology. She’s visited brain imaging labs and baboon troops in Kenya and written about everything from Alzheimer’s to zebrafish. She’s been in a unique position to see the evolving science on friendship in the animal and human world.“We now understand that there are real evolutionary advantages to being good at making and maintaining friends,” Lydia says.Enjoy! Ep 754You Can Prevent and Even Reverse Cognitive Decline – Dr. Dale Bredesen with Dave Asprey : 754

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Dale Bredesen is a globally renowned expert in neurodegenerative diseases. His work has been inspired by the notion that Alzheimer's as it is currently known is "not just preventable, but reversible." He’s currently the Chief Science Officer (CSO) of Apollo Health and a professor at UCLA. Dr. Bredesen was on the show on episode #522 where we talked about his New York Times bestseller” “The End of Alzheimer’s.” He’s back on the show with a detailed program that he uses with his own patients. This program can be tailored to anyone’s needs and will enhance cognitive ability at any age. What we call Alzheimer’s disease is actually a protective response to a wide variety of insults to the brain: inflammation, insulin resistance, toxins, infections, and inadequate levels of nutrients, hormones, and growth factors.“I really believe that this field [neurodegenerative diseases] has more misunderstandings, misconceptions, and misperceptions, and myths than just about any other field, and people are dying,” Dr. Bredesen says. “These are not just white lies. These are things that people are dying for, and so let's quit thinking that the brain is functioning as a linear system here, and let's look at what actually makes a difference for people's cognition.”Dr. Bredesen’s “The End of Alzheimer’s Program” goes deeper into the science of reversing Alzheimer’s disease, with new research and a more programmatic approach that answers questions readers had after reading “The End of Alzheimer’s.” It lays out the tests, treatments and lifestyle musts you can do right now. You’ll take a dive into Ketoflex 12/3; get advice to prevent and reverse cognitive decline that is tailored to specific symptoms; learn more information about lifestyle influences; and examine the risks and solutions for toxic exposure. In this conversation, Dr. Bredesen also recommends starting with the big three: a series of blood tests, a cognitive assessment, and an MRI with volumetrics. Listen on for more resources on how to keep your brain at peak functioning.Enjoy! Ep 753Achieve Oralgasm With a Dirty Mouth – Trina Felber with Dave Asprey : 753

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to find out how, why and what to do about your oral health so you can not only have whiter and stronger teeth, but a better immune system, better skin and less of a chance for internal disease. My guest is Trina Felber (RN, BSN, MSN, CRNA), the creator and CEO of Primal Life Organics, an all-natural health product company that specializes in oral health and skin care lines for women and men.Trina focuses on oral health as the gateway to internal health and believes that the antiseptic products we use in our mouths are doing more harm than good. After more than 25 years as a registered nurse and nurse anesthetist, Trina has transitioned into an oral/dental health expert. “The reason that we end up with cavities is because of the environment that our teeth are in,” Trina says. “Our teeth are in an acidic environment the majority of the time. Most of the foods that we're eating are acidic. The dental products that were being sold on the market are creating more acids in your mouth. The more acid you have in your mouth, the more minerals your teeth lose, the more bad bacteria you grow, and the more chance of having what I call leaky gum syndrome or gingivitis. Once you go down that path, you end up with all sorts of health issues that are inflammatory related, including leaky gut syndrome and all of that digestive issues that you might suffer from."Listen on for some great tips on how taking care of your oral health, like ditching your toothpaste and mouthwash, using light instead of peroxide, and why minerals are so important.Enjoy! Ep 752Biohack Your Voice for Better Communication Instantly – Roger Love with Dave Asprey : 752

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to find out just how much your voice influences your life. People make value judgments about you within three seconds of hearing your voice. You may not even realize how much it’s affecting your career or your personal relationships. So, we’re going to biohack your voice! I’ve invited Roger Love on the show because he’s one of the world’s leading authorities on vocal sound. I’ve been working with him myself and have learned so much about how I breathe and how my nervous system works. “Singing and speaking is basically the exact same thing,” Roger says. “When you sing, you have control over pitch, how high or how low you go, pace, how fast or how slow you go. Melody: does it go up like this or does it go down like this? Volume and tone matter. Singers and speakers actually have the same ingredients like great chefs have. It's about how you mix those ingredients.”In his 30 years of voice coaching experience, he’s trained over 130,000 people worldwide, including professional speakers, singers and actors (many who’ve won Grammy and Oscar awards) and professional communicators. Roger has won awards in film coaching credits, most recently for “A Star Is Born” featuring actor. Bradley Cooper, who sang all the songs himself, and Lady Gaga.Roger combines scientific research with innovative techniques to go beyond simply word-smithing to help people create their own unique “sound” and find their voice. He goes on to explain that “speaking is actually physically connecting with people because it’s vibrating your body,” Roger says. “If the sounds hit you, they vibrate your body. So those sounds go into the first part of the brain that's called the amygdala. And the job of the amygdala is to only let things through to the prefrontal cortex if it's emotional.”If you make sounds where the melodies, volumes and tonal qualities are emotional, then the amygdala sends it right to the prefrontal cortex, where it gets processed, thought about, felt about and stored into memory and then the person can take action on it. Super cool to know how our bodies and brains work together to make sense of vocal sounds! And this matters for you now more than ever, because you spend all day every day, if you work from home, using your voice, in fact, your voice becomes much more important than the grainy video from your webcam most likely. This episode is full of great tips you can start using right away.Enjoy! Ep 751Breathing Essentials That Will Change Your Life – James Nestor with Dave Asprey : 751

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to learn how to breathe. And the person who’s going to explain it is my guest James Nestor. He’s a San Francisco-based science journalist, author, surfer, free diver, adventurer, and speaker. His new book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art,” takes on a topic that we all take for granted. So why is the topic of breathing so fascinating? Apparently, as “natural as breathing” really isn’t. Our breathing has evolved, and not for the better. Even though we think we know how to do it, our lives since the Industrial Age have been disrupted in ways that now are harming us. James set out on a decade-long quest to find out where our breathing went wrong—and how to fix it. He uncovered the history of ancient breathing techniques and the science behind breathing. His book draws on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology. He takes an intense and interesting look at this basic biological function of ours. One of the astounding things he discovered had to do with mouth breathing. “Twenty-five to 50 percent of the population are chronic mouth breathers,” James says. “So, we don't use our noses either because we can’t, because they're always plugged up, or we just choose not to. … So many people have chronic sinus. So many people are mouth breathing. And so many people have asthma that we've accepted this as completely normal, and it's not. And the science is very clear what damage this is doing to us as a population.”You’ll be thrilled at the stuff you’ll learn in this episode that you didn’t know before. From bone structure to oxygen intake to heart rate–and even your genitalia–breathing is at the center of it all.  James is here to talk about ways that proper breathing can help heal modern medical conditions, ease anxiety and basically change your life.Enjoy! Ep 7503 Pillars of Performance: Cold, Breath & Mind – Wim Hof with Dave Asprey : 750

To Bulletproof Radio listeners: The audio on this particular episode is not our usual quality due to technical difficulties on an international connection. We ask for your understanding, as we didn't want to delay bringing this awesome guest to you.In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Wim Hof, aka, “The Iceman.” Wim holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold. He’s based in the Netherlands and has taught breathing techniques all over the world. His methods can change your body chemistry, infuse you with energy, and focus your mind.“The breath is a door,” Wim says. “Without the breath, what is there? It’s where you and I and everyone else began. It’s where all life begins.”He’s taken his techniques and distilled them into a new book: “The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential.”Over a decade and in eight university research studies, his methods have proven that the autonomous nervous system, as related to the innate immune response, can be willfully influenced.  This is something that was previously unknown to scienceIn these studies, he has also proven that he can directly:influence his autonomic nervous system, measurably reduce inflammation, regulate his internal PH levels and body temperature, activate his immune system to resist the effects of poisonous endotoxins, andactivated regions in the brain responsible for pain suppression.Although Wim is best known for his seeming ability to go beyond human limits, his basic method is accessible to anyone: 20 minutes of breathing practice, a cold shower at the end of your warm one, and the persistence to stick with it. Enjoy! Ep 745Embrace Criticism and Don't Take Yes for An Answer – Steven Herz with Dave Asprey : 745

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is career advisor Steve Herz. He leads a large sports and entertainment talent and marketing firm, and helps athletes, CEOs, lawyers, entrepreneurs and young professionals move forward in their careers.According to Steve, our longing for human connection reflects an important truth—we respond more positively to people who have the ability to make a deep human connection with us. That “connectability,” as he calls it, is imperative to our personal career success—whether you’re looking for work, worried about keeping your job during a recession, or trying to climb your way to the top when things start looking up. “I say don't take yes for an answer because so often in life, you think you're hearing, yes, and then six months later, you're on the wrong end of a downsizing or a reorg and you're out of a job or someone else gets a promotion,” Steve says. “Well, if you were so great and everything was so, ‘Yes.’ Why aren't you where you want to be in life?"And that’s why he called his new book “Don't Take Yes for an Answer: Using Authority, Warmth, and Energy to Get Exceptional Results.”Steve gives also gives solid tips on how to develop your own A.W.E.: authority, warmth and energy. Those are the components of what you should be looking to improve once you don't take yes for an answer. We also get into why constructive criticism can move your career forward in big ways.“If I realized that as the employee, that I'm increasing my value to you or to the world in terms of more customers, better getting along with colleagues, better leadership, fellowship, whatever it might be, I'm helping myself,” Steve says. “So you should be thinking about that (constructive) criticism as a gift and also take it selfishly.”Steve is president of the Montag Group in NYC, an agency that represents over 250 of today’s top journalists, broadcast executives, and media personalities—at networks like CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, ESPN and elsewhere. After his advice in this episode, you’ll be ready to crush it at whatever personal or professional step you take next.Enjoy! Ep 744Feeling Stuck? 40+ Ways to Turn Your Ideas Into a Career – Jeff Madoff with Dave Asprey : 744

2020 has given many people time to think and reassess their personal and professional lives. Some are considering or have been forced to make career changes. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest gives readers a candid behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to build a creative career. Jeff Madoff says making a living with your ideas is a marathon not a sprint. In his brand new book, “Creative Careers: Making a Living with Your Ideas,” he draws on his own decades of experience and also the experience of more than 40 leading entrepreneurs, artists, and business leaders to give you an accessible path that will lead to success in whatever new career field you choose.“Every entrepreneur that starts a business is creating something out of nothing, that's creativity,” Jeff says. “I define creativity as the compelling need to bring about change.”Jeff Madoff began his career as a fashion designer and was chosen one of the top 10 designers in the U.S. He then switched careers to be a director, photographer and writer. He founded Madoff Productions, a film production company that creates award-winning branded content including commercials, web content, music videos, and documentaries. His articles have appeared online in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, Huffington Post and other major publications. He’s since expanded his career to include teaching, book and playwriting, and theatrical producing.“Don't say no to yourself,” Jeff says. “Don't disqualify yourself by thinking you're not good enough, your idea doesn't have enough value, all those kinds of things. And then you don't do anything. Because a sure way to make sure nothing happens is to do nothing. So, there's a risk involved in even starting. And a lot of people are afraid to make that leap because of doubt. And they're afraid of taking that risk and not succeeding.”Enjoy!
