Ep 844Hacking Hair Follicle Function – Dr. Alan Bauman and Dr. Sophia Kogan : 844

If you’re losing your hair, you’re not alone. Hair loss is more common than you might think: 18 percent of men under 29 have moderate to advanced hair loss, and that number jumps to 53 percent for men in their 40s. Hair loss affects at least 50 percent of women by age 50. From your scalp to your stress load to the state of your hormones, your hair reflects what’s going on inside of you.“Scalp health is a big problem,” says hair transplant surgeon Dr. Alan J. Bauman, “and we know now that there’s a direct link between scalp health and the inflammation (in the body) that’s going on. The hair fiber is dead but the follicle is alive, and when there’s inflammation going on in and around that area the follicle just doesn’t perform as well. So, scalp health is really important.”And say bye-bye to the painful “plugs” you may have heard about before. Dr. Bauman’s sophisticated procedures can be undetectably natural with minimal downtime.Dr. Sophia Kogan conducts research and develops nutraceutical solutions for hair thinning and loss. “Women go through a tremendous amount of stress in relationship to their hair, even more so than men because men sort of expect to thin,” Dr. Kogan says. She explains that the experience of hair loss for women often has a specific shame and guilt associated with it, too.Stress effects your hair throughout your entire lifetime, but during prolonged periods of high stress it’s even worse. When you’re suffering from physical and/or emotional stress, the body pulls its resources to preserve its life internally, not hair growth. Since everyone experiences stress differently, it’s generally important to take time in your day for something that brings you into a flow state, Dr. Kogan suggests. Calming your nervous system plays an important role in stress management. If you enjoy this special episode with Dr. Bauman and Dr. Kogan, listen to their full Bulletproof Radio podcasts about how to improve your hair health:Biohacking Baldness: The Hair Episode for Everyone – Dr. Alan Bauman with Dave Asprey – #727Dr. Bauman treats hair loss, thinning and restoration. Ep 843Taking Alcohol in a Natural Direction – Bill Moses with Dave Asprey : 843

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Bill Moses joins the show to introduce you to Flying Embers, an innovation lab that makes hard kombucha, hard seltzers and other fermented botanical brews.Bill founded Flying Embers with the idea of transforming the alcohol industry with what he calls “better-for-you” products. He’s a seasoned expert in the natural beverage industry who helped build the first certified organic winery in Southern California, Casa Barranca. He’s now blended his experience in organic winemaking with the ancient fermentation practices to create modern drinks rooted in ancient botanical traditions.“I know that I want to have a little bit of fun,” Bill says. “I want to have a drink. I want to relax, whatever it might be. And we know that the alcohol could cause some inflammation. Well, is there an offset? Is there something that may offset some of it? That's the way I rationalize this as better-for-you alcohol.”He also wants to change the existing alcohol paradigm. No small goal there.I don’t talk about alcohol much on the show, but there’s all sorts of good live bacteria in Flying Embers products made from natural, organic, plant-based sources. You’ll find innovative ingredients, some pretty bold flavors and functional benefits you wouldn’t expect to find in alcohol.Flying Embers also diligently manages what goes in and the fermentation process. They have a staff microbiologist who lab tests all products to ensure quality. Our conversation dives into the science behind drink development.“We really want to know what's in there,” Bill says. “We really want to test it. We really want to continue to maintain the integrity of the bacteria and the yeast that is fully clean and tested for mycotoxins and all sorts of impurities.”Flying Embers drinks contain no residual sugar, reminding us that sugar is not our friend. Instead, turmeric, ginseng and astragalus gets added the fermentation process, which act as adaptogens. These herbs turn our stress responses on and off more effectively.Hard kombucha is becoming a mainstream item you can find in bars, restaurants, and retailers across the country, so this is an exciting time to be hearing about a brand that has in mind what’s best for our bodies. This is kombucha that I can get behind.Flying Embers also has an interesting backstory. The company Launched in the midst of the 2017 Thomas Fires in Ojai, California. Literally among flying embers. The company donates a portion of proceeds to first responders.Enjoy! WOMEN’S HEALTH: How to Get the Right Care – A Top 10 Episode with Dr. Jolene Brighten

bonus

Welcome to Your Upgraded Summer! This new series revisits the Top 10 Bulletproof Radio episodes of all time. The topics cover essentials like nutrition, energy, hormones, sleep and autophagy, as well as gut, brain, autoimmune and women's health. You'll get the main points in a shortened version so you can get the good stuff and get on with your summer plans. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Dr. Jolene Brighten takes the No. 9 spot with: On Women’s Health, Post-Birth Control Syndrome, and Brain Injuries – Dr. Jolene Brighten – #415In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Jolene Brighten, a functional medicine naturopathic doctor, talks about the birth control pill, states of giving birth and recovery, and even traumatic brain injuries.Specializing in women’s health, Dr. Brighten focuses on how gender bias in medicine often undermines women’s ability to work through health difficulties. The conversation covers the experiences women often have after giving birth, such as hypothyroidism, brain fog, and larger mental health issues due to major hormonal changes. She takes a strong stance on the birth control pill. She shares the ways it causes leaky gut, disrupts thyroid hormones, increases risk of depression, and more. By being off the pill, she says, you can be more aligned with your body. She advocates for fertility awareness, a process in which (with the help of technology) you can track your cycle and the way your hormones manifest themselves in your life, month-to-month. Dr. Brighten first works on healing the body, then the mind, and then on a bigger level, like healing family lineage. In an interesting aside, we also veer in discussion about traumatic brain injuries (we’ve both had one!)  and our immediate and long-term approaches for healing. Our discussion is highly informed and even more encouraging. I think you’ll find it really helpful! Here’s what Dr. Brighten has to say:On The Pill: “Unfortunately, what we’re seeing of the 100 million women worldwide, who have taken the pill, about 60 percent of them are only taking it for symptoms, which is a huge red flag to me. If only 40 percent are taking the pill to prevent pregnancy, then what’s up with this other 60 percent? And why are we not practicing root-cause resolution, which we could absolutely do, and just giving women a pill?”On Birth: “For some reason, somewhere along the line, we got it in our head that women should be able to pop out a baby and then just go along their merry way. And at six weeks, everything's recovered and fine. Reality is, is it takes a whole year to really rebuild the nutrients and recover your body.”On Orgasm: “It’s a big thing that gets dismissed in women’s medicine. Having an orgasm is this mythical unicorn and women aren’t that interested in sex. But when you look at the research, there are so many benefits.”Enjoy! HORMONES: How to Balance & Manage Yours - A Top 10 Episode with T.S. Wiley

And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.T.S. Wiley takes the No. 4 spot with: How To Have The Hormones of a 20-Year-Old: T.S. Wiley #508T.S. Wiley has been conducting research on aging, cancer, sleep, hormones and more for decades. She’s a researcher, a medical theorist, and an author of the books “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival” and “Sex, Lies, and Menopause: The Shocking Truth About Synthetic Hormones and the Benefits of Natural Alternatives.” In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the conversation covers why it’s important to manage your hormones.Hormones keep your body in homeostasis, and when they’re out of whack, well, so are you. She’s the creator of the Wiley Protocol, which uses natural topical hormones to restore sleep, memory, libido, a quiet immune system and pain-free days and nights for both men and women. Her study of hormones is connected to genomics, epigenetics, your surrounding environment, the larger environment and bacteria. She explains why she developed the protocol and the impacts hormones have on our whole health, such as in cancer treatment, restoring brain function, and more. This episode will help you understand more about the ways you can control your external environment in order to improve our body’s internal processes. Here’s what T.S. Wiley has to say:“Everything in my head is connected, and you can't explain one discipline separately. You can't talk about hormones if you can't talk about the genes they’re turning on and off. You can't talk about genomics unless you talk about epigenetics, which is the environment turning things on and off, and now, it's very obvious to me in the new work I've done that it's all about the bacteria who own the planet. You have to realize they've been here for three billion years. They made us, and the plants, and the fish, and the birds because they wanted to walk.”“What the hell happened to my libido? I have a raging libido, and it was just gone one day. I thought, “I need hormones. I got to figure this out.” I read everything I could and nothing made sense, and I basically went to the notion that if you were going to put back something that you've lost, like insulin in a Type 1 diabetic, you would want to put it back the way you had it. Type 1 diabetics, of course, take insulin depending on their blood sugar after they eat, whatever they eat. They measure it all the time because that's the best they can do to replicate how the body would respond.”“There's two immune systems. There's the one in your gut that is defense, that keeps their cousins out. That keeps you from a getting a cold. Then, there's the one that belongs to the planet, also, unfortunately in your gut and in every plant and everything, and that's autoimmunity. That's what takes you out.” Enjoy! Ep 8424 Dimensions All Entrepreneurs Must Master – Alon Braun with Dave Asprey, Part 2 : 842

This is Part 2 of Alon Braun’s Bulletproof Radio episode. We talk about entrepreneurship, how to make your vision a reality and how to be a great leader. Alon is the author of “The Entrepreneur’s Journey: 8 Steps from Inspiration to Global Impact,” and a mentor, teacher and leader for entrepreneurs. In his book, he separates the world into four dimensions: internal world, external world, individual and collective. He says in order to fully craft your vision (whatever that may be) and be the best person to represent that, you need to do work in all four spaces. To be receptive to inspiration, you need to work on your internal world. Opening yourself to the art of expressing and all forms of collaboration, represents the external world. To work within the individual realm, you need to align yourself to the identity of entrepreneur. Finally, work to make sure everyone on your team is collaborating as a collective. Learning about all of these worlds is essential to entrepreneurship, Alon says.  “We need to balance, it's all an act of balance between all these forces, and this is why I built the framework. The framework guides you step-by-step.”Alon also explains how to market your products, build trust, center mindfulness in your work, and most importantly, how you can’t do this process alone. “Just walk with somebody that's been there already,” Alon says. “Don't be so arrogant to think that you're inventing the wheel. Get an advisor that's been through the journey before you. It's okay,” says Alon. “That's the way you get experience." …  “You need the best. You need to find who are the best teachers, you need to find the best courses, and that's the work for every CEO.”If you want to learn more about how you can be a productive, engaging, successful and creative leader of any kind, you’ll get a lot out of this episode Be sure to listen to Part 1 of Alon’s conversation about how to hack your memory: Build a Memory Palace to Upgrade Your Productivity – Alon Braun with Dave Asprey, Part 1 – #841Enjoy! Ep 841Build a Memory Palace to Upgrade Your Productivity – Alon Braun with Dave Asprey, Part 1 : 841

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, guest Alon Braun scales enterprises and scientific innovations, especially in the deep tech industry. He founded Neurotech Analytics, a neurotech-focused analytical hub that produces advanced analytical reports on the whole scope of neurotech industries. That said, my first question to him could be, “what can’t you do?” He’s been a marine biologist, a member of Israel’s cyber special forces unit, a children’s book author, a body movement teacher and more.Using his background in technology, Alon’s developed a kind of virtual machine we can use to boost our brain power. In this first of a two-part episode, I talk with him about how to create a new relationship with your memory by building a memory palace. When you do this, it boosts your efficiency, creativity and decision-making ability. Before Alon started using a memory palace, he was barely able to remember six numbers in a row. After he started using memory palaces, he was able to remember 100 numbers forward and backwards. But it’s not just a technique you use to show off your memory.“You put all the wants [into your memory palace],” Alon explains. “I took all this project management system, and I uploaded it to the memory palace. I needed to make an object for every project. Make an object that reminds me of this want, and I took the list of objects [and put it into my memory palace].”This technique allows him to work and cross things off his to-do lists without checking his phone or computer. It can allow you to connect with a project while still going about your day. On a mathematical level, building a memory palace is about creating an algorithm for your brain to prioritize your values. On a general level, it’s about creating a sorting process for everything going on inside your brain.“Right now we have so many choices,” Alon says. “You open Netflix… you open the internet, what do you choose?" He says that building a memory palace is a skill we can develop for multi-criteria decisions and choice according to your own preference and values that aren’t recommendations by a technology algorithm.“We need to do the ground work and work with our children,” he says. This is an exciting episode that gives you great tools to hack your memory, Make sure and tune in for part two, where we’ll dig into entrepreneurship, mission and how to build your vision. Enjoy! And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Naomi Whittel takes the No. 8 spot with: Glow From The Inside Out: Autophagy and Women – Naomi Whittel #477Autophagy is your body’s natural process of removing and recycling cellular waste, but without that process, the waste grows. You want autophagy, which literally means “self-eat,” to be working at maximum capacity. We have the power to activate this process in each of our cells. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’ll learn simple ways to boost your body’s autophagy. That’s a good thing because autophagy can turn the clock back and create younger cells.Naomi Whittel is recognized as an innovator in the health and wellness industry, and an advocate for clean and safe nutrition. After navigating her own journey of autoimmune disorders, Naomi Whittel set about searching for ways to activate autophagy that anyone could do. “My whole objective is to provide the simple and easy solutions to really activating the youth inside of our cell,” she says.Things like processed foods and environmental toxins, decrease your autophagy. Good sleep, regular sex, intermittent fasting, and 30 minutes of resistance training every other day, activate your autophagy. Naomi On Fat: It’s fat first and fat most because that’s activating the autophagy. With fat and how it’s so different than protein, which we all know protein can turn into a carb, it can become a sugar. My body does so much better when I am able to burn fat as my fuel instead of sugar as my fuel. Naomi On Intermittent Fasting: I look at where the outside meets the inside, so I'm thinking about my skin all the time from the inside out. Things like fasting, intermittent fasting is done every other day, and intermittent fasting coupled with protein cycling.” Naomi on Surprising Results: We did an eight-week clinical study with tons of women. What happened was after 15 days, the lead researcher called me up and said, “You’re never going to believe that every single woman in this study has achieved benefits in two weeks of the program.” And that’s why we called it Glow15. Naomi on Health Success: I’ve dropped 10 pounds by activating my autophagy, by eating more fat than I could ever imagine, never counting a calorie, being satiated, having that mental focus and dealing with chronic, chronic stress. I believe it's really through fat first, carbs last, intermittent fasting, protein cycling, these kinds of principles. Enjoy! And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Satchin Panda takes the No. 5 spot with: Eating Affects Your Sleep (and vice versa) – Satchin Panda #560In modern life it can be hard to get to bed on time, let alone get quality sleep. But, what happens when you don’t get good sleep? You feel like a zombie, you're more likely to be anxious, and you throw your body out of whack. In this episode, Satchin Panda, Ph.D., shares his expertise on sleep, circadian rhythm and the effects of ambient light on your overall health. He’s a professor at the Salk Institute in San Diego and a leading expert in the field of circadian rhythm research.Circadian rhythm is a foundation of good health. It tells you that almost every organ has its own clock. For example, your brain has peak hours for productivity. Circadian rhythm also tells you that blue light has the power to synchronize and disrupt your internal clock and it tells you that your eating habits affect your internal clock. All of those things affect your sleep quality. “Your day actually begins when you go to bed the previous night because that determines how long you'll sleep, how long you'll reset your brain and then how fresh you'll wake up in the morning,” Satchin says. “Most sleep researchers agree that an adult should be in bed for eight hours. I'm saying they should be in bed for eight hours, so, out of that, somebody may get six and a half to seven hours of sleep.”Satchin has a lot of great tips for how you can get better sleep, including keeping light out of the bedroom, reducing your body temperature before sleep, when to eat throughout the day and much more. This episode will make you feel capable of tackling any sleep problems. If you want to learn more about Satchin’s work, check out his latest books, “The Circadian Code: Lose Weight, Supercharge Your Energy, and Transform Your Health from Morning to Midnight” and “The Circadian Diabetes Code: Discover the Right Time to Eat, Sleep, and Exercise to Prevent and Reverse Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.”Enjoy! Ep 8407 Rules to Reverse Aging and Live Longer – Ann Louise Gittleman with Dave Asprey : 840

After more than four decades and more than 35 books, Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., CNS, continues to break new ground in integrative and functional medicine. She’s a Columbia-trained nutritionist and author internationally recognized as a pioneer in dietary, longevity, environmental, and women’s health issues. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Ann Louise recommends a paradigm shift in which your biology is not your biography. Her seven new rules for radical longevity include: immunity, toxic overload, advanced glycation end products, fascia, cellular rejuvenation, minerals, gut-brain connection.During her long career, she's examined overlooked factors that contribute to weight gain beyond diet and exercise. Decades before Keto, Paleo, Carnivore, and Intermittent Fasting diet trends, Ann Louise wrote that obesity and diabetes were caused by a lack of the right type of fat and an excess of the wrong kind of carbohydrate in her first book Beyond Pritikin (1988). “I'm so grateful that people now realize that you can eat fat, lose weight, and feel stronger and healthier and live until 120,” Ann Louise says. “It's all about the right kind of fat. And also, intermittent fasting has now come into play. I wrote about that in 2005. And in those days, people never realized how important it was. Now we have the research, we've got the anecdotal and the clinical studies. And I think that all these ideas are really ideas whose time has truly come.”In her newest book, “Radical Longevity: The Powerful Plan to Sharpen Your Brain, Strengthen, Your Body, and Reverse the Symptoms of Aging,” Ann Louise combines research with traditional healing wisdom to teach you how to live to 100 years old and beyond. She examines topics from heavy metals and EMFs, to cellular regeneration and emotional detox. She says by using epigenetics to slow and reverse many of the most worrisome aging conditions, you can preserve your “youth span” and enhance your immunity, heart, brain, muscles, joints, skin, and hair. You can even revitalize your sex drive. You can learn even more from Ann Louise as she tackles health trends and topics on her podcast, “The First Lady of Nutrition.”Enjoy! Ep 839Living a Life of Deep Adventure – Bob Ballard, Finder of the Titanic : 839

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, an incredibly special guest explores the vast depths of the oceans uncovering mysteries, proving theories, and revealing artifacts that tell a story about the history of humankind. And I got to talk to him via satellite phone as he was heading out to sea on his ship, Nautilus.Oceanographer and marine geologist Bob Ballard has led nearly 160 deep-sea expeditions and worked with the Navy on top-secret missions throughout an underwater career spanning six decades. It all began with a love of California’s Mission Bay tide pools.“Everyone's born with that flame of curiosity,” Bob says. “Every child is born a scientist, and yet the educational system can turn off that pilot light and kill it. So, I was lucky enough right when my pilot light was getting low, someone put their arm around me and said, "You can do it." Helped me through it. I had people all the way.”He’s gone on to discover ships thought long lost and provide extraordinary new understandings and discoveries in marine geology, geophysics, biology, and chemistry. He’s discovered new life-forms, traced ancient trade routes, developed robots that roam the ocean floor, and opened an amazing underwater world to kids through telepresence. One of his astonishing contributions includes discovering a luxury steamship at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 1985. That would be the RMS Titanic. It rests off the eastern coast of the Canadian province Newfoundland. Now 79, he talks openly of his dyslexia, which he didn’t even know he had until a few years ago. He just thought his brain worked differently than other people’s. “I do not look at it as a disadvantage,” Bob says. “I look at it as an advantage. The rules inside the box were written by non-dyslexics and they were simply not fair. I live outside the box.”His work continues with a brand-new adventure that just launched in July 2021. Bob put together a group of organizations that embarked on a 10-year $200 million federally funded study of the Pacific Ocean section what’s called the offshore Economic Exclusion Zone. This includes locations such as Guam and American Samoa. “We own more land underwater than any nation on earth, and yet we have better maps of Mars than have of the United States of America,” Bob says. “Go figure.”This expedition will map the water’s bottom and also study whole entire water column, from the shoreline to the abyss. You can even follow along to see what’s happening! Nautilus Live, Ocean Exploration Trust. He chronicles his life in his new memoir, “Into The Deep: A Memoir from the Man Who Found Titanic” and in the new National Geographic documentary special, “Bob Ballard, An Explorer’s Life.” “I’m in the process of fessing up,” he says in the documentary. Bob’s scientific interests run the gamut from the volcanic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes of the mid-ocean ridge to deep-sea archaeology and maritime history. As the National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Bob spearheads the Nautilus expeditions (open-ended voyages of ocean discovery) and shares his finds with the world through streaming video. Learn more about his experience and expeditions here.Enjoy! LECTINS: Good guys or bad? A Top 10 Episode with Dr. Steven Gundry

And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode. Dr. Steven Gundry takes the No. 2 spot with: How Nutrition Can Reverse Disease and the Impact of Lectins – Dr. Steven Gundry – #417.More than two decades ago, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Gundry decided to help people prevent health issues. He retired as a cardiologist to teach patients how to eat, guiding them on how to get ahead of the problem, not fixing it after the fact. He shifted toward a more proactive approach to health through food and diet changes and has since become a pioneer in nutrition. As a medical researcher and author, he’s spent the last 16 years studying the microbiome and now helps patients use diet and nutrition as a key form of treatment. You may know of his New York Times best-selling books, “The Plant Paradox,” “The Longevity Paradox” and “The Energy Paradox.”Simply, paradox mean confusing information. What sounds reasonable isn’t or what sounds absurd turns out to be true. There’s no better example than plants. Plants can help your body or try to kill you.By now you know that “healthy foods” in your diet may not be as good for you as you think. Many seemingly healthy foods contain a protein called lectin which seeks out sugar molecules to bind to, rapidly increasing our likelihood of inflammation. Inflammation leaves your body not only less energetic, but less prepared to fight disease.  Here’s what Dr. Gundry says:“[Plants are] chemists of incredible ability. So what they do is they use chemical warfare, and one of their favorite attack mechanisms is the protein lectin, and lectins are so beautifully diabolically designed to wreak havoc on an animal predator.” “Our ancient ancestors interacted with 250 different plant species on a rotating basis. All of those plants have polyphenols, flavonoids that not only turn on our individual genes, but more importantly, they alter the gene expression of our microbiome, [which is capable of] rapid alteration in gene expression.” In this episode you’ll learn about the foods that may be negatively affecting you, why humans ever started eating them in the first place (ahem, corn?), and the power of a healthy diet.Enjoy! He's a board-certified neurologist and five-time New York Times bestselling author. No. 1 was "Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar–Your Brain's Silent Killers." This landmark book made the connection between grains and brain health. Here's what Dr. Perlmutter says:"This is very important. It is carbohydrate confusion because we desperately, desperately need carbs. So many people adopt a ketogenic program and totally abandon their carbohydrate intake and what happens? They feel crappy, they become constipated, they get brain fog, they don't sleep well, they're agitated and it's all because they fail to understand that we have to be quite specific when we talk about carbohydrates.""We are desperately in need of fiber in the diet, which is by definition a complex carbohydrate that we don't metabolize, but is yet metabolized by our gut bacteria.""When we throw that baby out with the bathwater, we set the stage for not nurturing the 100 billion organisms that live within us that really depend on your food choices, 100 trillion, depend on your food choices to nurture them to allow you to not just be healthy, but be healthier, to be able to combat risk of illness moving forward."His other bestsellers include "Brain Maker," "The Grain Brain Cookbook", "The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan," and "Brain Wash," co-written with Austin Perlmutter, M.D.Enjoy! Ep 838Self-Love Drives Your Choices and Upgrades Your Life – Kamal Ravikant with Dave Asprey : 838

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest follows his curiosity wherever it leads.Kamal Ravikant served as an infantry soldier in the US Army, hiked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, climbed the Himalayas and meditated with monks there, and help found several companies. He’s made a career as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, investor, and author. Currently, he’s Managing Partner at Evolve VC, an early stage venture capital fund.So what does all this have to do with self-love? Kamal explains how he developed self-love as a foundation for his life and work. Kamal originally published his non-fiction book “Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It” in 2012 after a devastating year when he was sick to the point of bed rest, his company failed, he went through a relationship break-up and a close friend died.In the midst of all this strife, he had an “a-ha” moment and made a vow to himself. He literally transformed his life. He gave a talk at the end of 2011 speaking his truth. A few months later, he wrote some things down to help a friend. Then he sent the writings to another friend where instead of a blog post, the writings became a book that struck a nerve and went viral. Kamal took years of responses to heart and revised the content to go even deeper, re-releasing the book in January 2020.“I'm a big believer in sharing the truth and I don't mean like here's my dirty laundry truth, but the emotional truth, the fundamental truth or your truth about what makes you better,” Kamal says. “What I've been sharing about is what makes you better in the inside.”You’ll find this show full of wisdom about self-love, mindset, entrepreneurship and tech investing. Ep 837How to Live Your Life After Great Loss – Amanda Kloots with Dave Asprey : 837

This episode of Bulletproof Radio covers the human side of grief and loss and love and community and courage. These are things that you might find yourself saying, “Well, wait. What does that have to do with biohacking or human performance?” These have to do with the parts of being human that we all go through in our lives. They're parts that we oftentimes don't talk about because they're uncomfortable and we're wired in ourselves to avoid things that are uncomfortable. However, if you do think about them, it gives you enormous opportunity for growth and enormous opportunity to be a better human being. And that means you can be of better service to others,In March 2020, Amanda Kloots and her husband, Nick Cordero, moved from Manhattan to Los Angeles with their infant son.It was a big move for them: Amanda was a celebrity fitness trainer, actor and Broadway dancer, and Nick, a Tony Award-nominated Broadway star, was going to pursue a career in the music industry. When Nick complained of being tired, they both thought it was the move. A little more than three months later Nick died of extreme COVID-19 complications: 95 of those days on a ventilator in the ICU, 42 were in a medically induced coma. At age 41, he’d been young, healthy, had no pre-existing conditions and didn’t have any of the typical Covid symptoms.During Nick’s illness, Amanda chronicled his medical journey and her family’s emotional journey on Instagram. Friends, family and people she didn’t know rallied around them from around the globe with love and support. She also relied on her faith: “I'm a very spiritual person,” Amanda says. “I have a very strong faith and it's always been a part of my life. That's where I go, when I need strength, when I need support, that is exactly where I go.”Amanda, now a co-host of the CBS daytime talk show, “The Talk,” turned her experience into a memoir, co-written with her sister, Anna Kloots: “Live Your Life: My Story of Loving and Losing Nick Cordero.” It’s a brave book about a devastating loss. It’s a human story that connects us all.Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts.Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 835Shut Your Mouth! Nose Breathing Improves All Your Body Systems – Patrick McKeown with Dave Asprey : 835

Some biohacks can be expensive. Most of them work on mechanisms that are free, but breathing just might be the biggest and best magic bullet we have today. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I talk to returning guest Patrick McKeown about why. And why he wants everyone to be a nose breather.Patrick’s one of the world’s leading breathing re-education experts who’s been immersed in the research of breathing for more than two decades. He’s bringing the benefits of that research to people around the world. He's written numerous books on the topic and talked about the importance of oxygen on a previous podcast, "How to Breathe Less to Do More."“I just feel that breathing has been too left of field and it hasn't been put out there properly,” Patrick says. “This is something we have to start taking seriously.”Around 20 percent of the general population has dysfunctional breathing, but if you have lower back pain, anxiety or asthma, that percentage goes way up. Why’s that important? The way you breathe has a huge impact on your quality of life, changing how you deal with stress, your sleeping habits, the way you exercise and so much more. This goes for kids and adults alike.Patrick explains breathing in three ways: biochemical, biomechanics and psychological. Breathing function or dysfunction dramatically affects focus and concentration; brain function; blood pressure; respiratory health; female sex hormones; blood sugar; and even pain."We're talking about basic physiology that can influence all of the major disciplines of medicine, dental health, movement, mental health, sleep, respiration," Patrick says. "And these are significant. And I think there is a role for breathing and in time, breathing will be embraced in medicine."In his new book, "THE BREATHING CURE: Develop New Habits for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life," Patrick walks you through tips and strategies to breathe light, slow and deep. His breathing exercises improve blood chemistry and increase oxygen flow to all your body’s systems, overall improving the function of your body’s nervous system. He uses fast, simple, scientific methods. Here’s what happens when you learn how to breathe differently:you increase oxygen uptake and delivery to the cells, improving blood circulation, and unblocking the nose.you open the airways of your lungs, boost blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, improve sleep and calm your mind.you restore body functions wrecked by stress, build greater resilience, and live longer. Enjoy! Ep 834Shorten Your Cardio Time Even More with REHIT – Ulrich Dempfle with Dave Asprey : 834

Cardio sometimes gets a bad rap; people either do too much or too little.  You’ve likely heard of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’ll learn about the benefits of REHIT (Reduced Exertion High Intensity Interval Training) to improve cardiovascular fitness. Ulrich Dempfle, co-founder of CAROL, joins me on the show to talk about REHIT and the science behind how you can get fit in less than 9 minutes. Yes, really. The CAROL bike is founded on REHIT principles and gets right to the sweet spot for your health and fitness with added AI programming. Decades of progressive research going back to the 1970s looked at high intensity training. New studies specifically show that by riding a CAROL bike you can:-improve your fitness by 12 percent in 8 weeks, measured by V02max. This adds two years of healthy lifespan!-lower your risk of Type II Diabetes by 60% in 8 weeks-burn twice as many calories minute-per-minute compared to traditional exercise. And keep burning calories for several hours after your ride.“Anything that's longer than 20 seconds and anything that's longer than two times of 20 seconds is not maximum intensity because you couldn't do maximum intensity for these sustained periods,” Ulrich says. “So, your slope and the change in intensity is just much lower on these traditional forms of HIIT.”The idea for the stationary CAROL bike came alive in 2012 during work on chronic disease management programs for people with diabetes. Not surprisingly, researchers found it challenging to get people to exercise. The main excuse for most people was lack of time and frustration about slow results.CAROL solves that. The bike’s core ride lasts 8 minutes and 40 seconds. It’s a gentle-paced ride with two 20-second sprints. On the sprints, you go all out as hard as you can. But this isn’t just a conversation about riding a bike. We cover the science of how rapid glycogen depletion triggers the release and activation of certain signaling molecules (AMPk and PGC-1a), which triggers mitochondrial biogenesis. And why maximum intensity sprints ‘saturate’ the signaling response mechanism.“When you do those sprints, you increase the energy demand in your body very suddenly, about 100 times higher compared to rest,” Ulrich says.” With this spike in energy demand, the muscle just cannot use its usual source of fuel, which is either fat or sugar that it takes from the bloodstream”. “Instead, it would have to burn what's called muscular glycogen, so that is a storage form of sugar that is stored in the muscle itself. That's the emergency reserve. With the exercise, we force the muscle to tap into those energy reserves, and that kicks off a cascade of molecular changes, of triggers, where certain signaling molecules are released that basically tell the body to get fitter and stronger.”Enjoy! Ep 833Master Your Energy to Transform Your Life – Master Mingtong Gu with Dave Asprey – #833 : 833

I’m always curious to learn from people who’ve mastered ancient teachings. I hold a deep respect for people who’ve dedicated their lives to deep inner work and transformation to become better humans. That’s why I’m really glad to welcome Master Mingtong Gu to this episode of Bulletproof Radio. He shares ancient Eastern wisdom around the world to show how you can achieve better health and consciousness in contemporary times. The ancient wisdom and teachings of chi, the breath, meditation, and energy are particularly relevant today. The mystical has become measurable.“The whole universe is made of energy,” says Master Mingtong. “And only four percent is visible, measurable, or what we call physical. Then the rest 96%; it's not just the vacuum space, but actually is full of energy.”We talk about the power of chi and how to integrate a qigong practice. You’ll also learn how you can use energy and movement to heal your body, mind and emotions. Master Mingtong brings a lightness and joy to the show. He’s quick to laugh and takes you through live examples of breathing and sound healing exercises that boosts your energy.  “You have the same capacity, not only to access the energy, but to master your own energy,” Master Mingtong says. “This is one of way framing your life purpose. And one way of literally upgrading ourselves as human beings.”Born and raised in China, Master Mingtong Gu received extensive Qigong training under Grandmaster Pang at the largest Qigong medicine-less hospital in China. He was named The Qigong Master of the Year by the World Congress for Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine. He leads retreats and workshops throughout the United States and internationally. He founded the Chi Center, a 79-acre retreat center south of Santa Fe. The Chi Center presents retreats, workshops and online learning programs, including a professional certification program for Qigong teachers and health professionals. He’s most interested in working with energy to open people's hearts and human capacity.“Mastering your own energy is inseparable from cultivating or connecting the energy of the earth, energy of the universe and the energy interacting with the other phenomenon, including interpersonal relationship,” he says. “But when you're approaching [life] in a more cheerful way, somehow things that flow much more effectively.”More about Master Mingtong: -He’s the author of key books and the Pure Qi Online series that translate the ancient teachings of Wisdom Healing Qigong for today’s world.-He’s on faculty for Esalen Institute, Omega Institute, 1440 Multiversity, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and the Shift Network. -He’s presented at Institute of Noetic Science (IONS), Wisdom 2.0, US Journal Training, PBS, and the Festival of Faiths. Ep 832Using Love and Logic to Raise Resilient Kids – Dr. Charles Fay with Dave Asprey : 832

How would you like to make parenting fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic? (And if you’re a grown-up son or daughter, you may want to improve your own relationship with your parents.} In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Charles Fay, Ph.D., gives practical and down-to-earth solutions to the most common and frustrating behaviors displayed by kids of all ages. He’s also a parent himself who admittedly makes mistakes. Parents can be frustrating, too.The internationally recognized Love and Logic® approach he relies on come directly from years of research and clinical experience with severely disturbed youth and their families in psychiatric hospitals, public and private schools, and homes. You’ll learn strategies and techniques from Dr. Fay that you can apply to daily parenting. This works for teachers and educators, too. There are the 5 non-negotiable core principles of Love and Logic® that he talks through during the podcast. These can absolutely change your family dynamic: Mutual Dignity/Respect, Shared Thinking, Shared Control, Empathy and Relationship.Dr. Fay also gives real-time action steps for implementing key components of resiliency: 1) emotional connection, 2) healthy limits, and 3) success experiences. We talk about the emergence of “helicopter parenting” and why it doesn’t work. “We got to be able to offload problems onto the shoulders of the people who really need to own them, and we do it with love, but we do our friends, our family no favor when we're solving all their problems for them,” Dr. Charles says.If you’re struggling, either a little or a lot, with the kids you parent or teach, you’ll get a lot of value out of this episode. If you want simple ways to better connect with your kids, you’ll get some nuggets of wisdom you can start using today.Go to the Love and Logic Institute to find a wealth of resources for parents, educators and trainers. Ep 831How To Build Your Confidence and Fully Commit To Your Life – Laila Ali with Dave Asprey : 831

In this special episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m welcoming Laila Ali. She’s a world-class athlete, fitness and wellness advocate, TV host, author, home chef and cooking enthusiast, founder of the Laila Ali Lifestyle Brand, and mother of two. She’s the daughter of late beloved global icon and humanitarian, former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, and Laila herself is a two-time hall of famer and four-time undefeated boxing world champion. Her stellar record includes 24 wins (21 were “knockouts”) and zero losses. She’s heralded as the most successful female in the history of women’s boxing.Along the way, she had to build up her inner strength, as well as her physical strength. “ That was something that I had already learned in my life,” Laila says. “Just my own conviction, belief and confidence needed to be there in order to withstand all of the pressure and all of the naysayers that I would be facing, including my father.”She also fully committed. “It took years of learning and growing, but from the beginning,” Laila says. “I got the best trainers I could find. I learned about how I needed to eat. I learned about how I needed to rest. What would it take to be elite and be better than everyone else. And I was willing to do it all.”Through overtraining, health issues, aging and life changes, she’s learned to find the balance. And she says you can, too. “It’s not healthy to keep going to the point of being stressed out and feeling like there's always something to do and feeling like you can't sit down and relax,” Laila says. “That's just not good to do at any age.” Enjoy! Ep 830Health Anxiety, Vaccines and Making Sense of Medical News – Dr. Jen Ashton with Dave Asprey : 830

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Jen Ashton brings a wealth of experience to the podcast as a physician, a medical correspondent for international news media, and an award-winning journalist. As the ABC News’ Chief Health and Medical Correspondent for nearly a decade, she reports on major health and wellness issues across all ABC News platforms. She also reports the latest breaking medical news for “GMA3: What You Need to Know.” She’s been on the front lines of Covid reporting on the science, the health toll and the development of Covid vaccines since the earliest days of the pandemic,.And while that certainly keeps her busy, she wrote her sixth book during the world’s crazy pandemic year: “The New Normal: A Roadmap to Resilience in the Pandemic Era.” (Some would call that feat crazy in itself!)“I found that in covering this pandemic, it really was more about communication, or as much about communication, and how to explain medical and scientific concepts to the world and to the country so that people can really use that information,” Dr. Ashton says. She’s one of the few physicians with media platforms who still sees patients and has an active medical practice. “I think that there were a lot of really smart doctors and public health officials who I think missed the mark on communicating a lot of the information in the pandemic because they don't take care of real patients anymore,” Dr Ashton explains. “I think that when someone does interact with a real person, it changes their approach as communicators of medical information, because it becomes very real.”One of the things that showed up in both her reporting on Covid and seeing her patients was the rise in health anxiety. This iis an obsessive and irrational worry about having a serious medical condition. In her book, Dr. Ashton says, “It’s important to know that this kind of health anxiety can happen to anyone at any time, even months or years after a traumatic event like a pandemic is over.”We talk about resilience in this episode and Dr. Ashton gives practical tips on how to navigate what’s happening in the world right now and how to move forward. Enjoy! Ep 829What You Must Know About Mold – Dr. Neil Nathan and Dr. Margaret Christensen : 829

This episode of Bulletproof Radio combines important information about mold from two leading expert physicians treating patients today.Over more than 25 years of a 50-year medical career, Dr. Neil Nathan has become a researcher, complex medical problem-solver and healer of mold toxicity. He treats patients who become too toxic and sensitive, and don’t tolerate usual medical treatments.  There’s a basic biology to all mold dysfunction, he explains. “Mold toxin enters the cells and begins to interfere with certain types of metabolism. That type of interference affects all parts of the body, including the brain and brain chemistry.”Dr. Nathan works to bring an awareness that mold toxicity is a major contributing factor for patients with chronic illness. Toxic mold is one of the most common, unrecognized, underlying factors for many different chronic illnesses in adults and children.Severe toxic mold exposure was the root cause of Dr. Margaret Christensen’s own family’s physical and mental health issues. The experience changed the course of her career—from an obstetrician-gynecologist to a doctor specializing in Functional Medicine. She now researches and treats hormone disruption and neurodegenerative diseases caused by toxic mold.Mold exposure is a multifactorial challenge, Dr. Christensen says. “The way I approach it is I’m not just dealing at the physiologic level, the physical level, of course, using binders and to pull things out and upregulating detox mechanisms with things like glutathione. I do a whole lot of work in the limbic system, because oftentimes, people who’ve had toxic mold exposure, it’s not one exposure.”In this conversation, we talk about mold’s effect on people, what doctors are getting wrong, and promising new treatments. If you enjoy this special episode, listen to the full Bulletproof Radio podcasts about mold:The Common Mold: Your Guide to Toxicity, Symptoms and Treatments – Dr. Neil Nathan with Dave Asprey – #733Mold’s Toxic Effects on Hormones, Brains and Kids – Dr. Margaret Christensen with Dave Asprey – #732Enjoy! Ep 828New Science Finds Thinking and Feeling in Both Sides of Your Brain – Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor with Dave Asprey : 828

When Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor was 37, she had a stroke that completely shut down the left hemisphere of her brain. Her eight-year recovery led her to some of the greatest discoveries of what our brains can do. Dr. Jill is a Harvard-trained and published neuroscientist and neuroanatomist with a broad area of brain expertise. She’s also well known for her TEDtalks since her stroke: My Stroke of Insight and The Right Brain vs. Left Brain Experience. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re talking all about her personal journey, insights and new research. For 50 years, we’ve been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it’s not that simple. In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. This means each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. To put it simply, the left brain defines your individuality. There’s a group of cells working to constantly take in more information to define you. The right brain processes everything through an emotional and not-so-linear lens, telling us we are as big and open and expansive as the universe. “From my perspective, I became more when I experienced the stroke, because what I gained was the awareness that I was as big as the universe,” Dr. Jill explains. “As I gained my relationship to the atoms and molecules around me, I expanded and became open. And then I became aware that if I'm going to be a functional human being in the world, I needed to gain some of those skill sets back from that left hemisphere,” she says. “I have so much awareness now of who and what I really am as a living being.”In her new book “Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters that Drive our Life,” Dr. Jill outlines four characters that map different parts of our brain. They correspond to the thinking and feeling elements in both brain hemispheres. Connecting and naming your four characters not only helps you better understand how your brain works but also can help you learn how to tune into your own peace and presence. Each of the four characters stems from specific groups of cells that feel unique inside of our body, they each display particular skills, feel specific emotions, or think distinctive thoughts. This paradigm marries your psychology with your brain anatomy—and Dr. Jill is going to explain how and what that means for you.“I kind of look at these [four characters] as trees and our thoughts and our emotions and our behavior as the leaves on that tree,” Dr. Jill says. “But the roots are really where the issues are. And if we understand the anatomy of what's going on in our emotions and our thoughts and our behavior, oh my gosh, we can really communicate at a core level. It's a whole new level of intimate communication.”Enjoy! Ep 827Taking a New Approach to Mental Health – Dr. Ellen Vora & Dave Asprey : 827

In this special episode of Bulletproof Radio, I asked holistic psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora what she thought was the single most important element that supports vitality at any age. She answered “community.”“Not only do I believe that, but the evidence supports that actually having good social connections, feeling held in community, that's really our most potent anti-aging medicine,” she says. When people are part of a community, they are happier and able to see things with different perspectives, Dr. Vora continued. “They can have a little bit more of a resilient mindset on things. People are just a little more cognitively nimble when they're surrounded by good people and happiness.”And that’s important when it comes to depression, anxiety and sleep. Three things Dr. Vora sees a lot of in her medical practice. We talk about why so many people struggle with those issues. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health, considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root cause. Dr. Vora received an undergraduate degree from Yale University, graduated from Columbia University medical school and went on to become a board-certified psychiatrist, medical acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She specializes in depression, anxiety, insomnia, women’s mental health, adult ADHD, bipolar, autoimmunity and digestive issues. Our conversation goes into sympathetic and parasympathetic stress, meditation, flossing (!) and psychedelics.“What we know is substances like psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, ketamine, they do cause a release of BDNF, brain derived neurotrophic factor. So, you have an increase in neuroplasticity and neurogenesis and you start to see a brain that can grow and change.”Another biggie that affects your mental health? Adverse childhood experience. “[The ACE] research renders everything else you've ever studied and paid attention to in healthcare totally irrelevant because what we're really seeing is that every marker that matters–health span, lifespan risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, certainly risk of digestive issues and autoimmunity, cancer–adverse childhood events play a significant role in determining your risk of these issues later on.”Listen on to find out how Dr. Vora is leading a new approach to mental health. Enjoy! Ep 826Stop NAD+ Decline and Slow Down Your Aging – Dr. Nichola Conlon with Dave Asprey : 826

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, molecular biologist Dr. Nichola Conlon joins me to talk about the role of a little molecule found in every cell in your body that has a huge impact on aging. She specializes in the study of aging as a biologically complex disorder, specifically the role of NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide). You’re going to learn about how NAD+ works in the body from this scientist who was named one of 2021’s Coolest Female Founders of UK Tech Making Huge Impacts.Dr. Conlon says a key thing for people to understand is to go back to why NAD+ actually declines. “You really need to understand actually how NAD+ is produced by the cells when they're young.”NAD+ is a natural molecule found in every cell in our bodies. It’s involved in energy production, helping convert the food you eat into the energy your cells need to stay alive. It is an activator of longevity proteins that are associated with cellular health and good aging, DNA repair and more. But as you get older, those NAD+ levels rapidly decline. Dr. Conlon explored why.“It's become a lot more apparent recently that it's not just energy production that NAD+ is involved with,” Dr. Conlon says. “It's also involved in cellular maintenance and repair. It's almost like the fuel which switches on different enzymes and different processes. NAD+ is critical and actually driving DNA repair and making sure that DNA repair enzymes get to the damage site and do the job that is required.”She says she got frustrated with the lag time between scientific discovery and actually getting new supplements and drugs to consumers—often a process of 10 to 15 years. “It's like all of science is encapsulated in this bubble, where it never actually gets out to real people in the outside world,” Dr. Conlon says. So, she took her years of expertise focused on early stage drug discovery with a leading biotech firm and founded Nuchido. She uses a “systems pharmacology” approach to look at the complexity of our individual biology because there’s no single magic bullet for any ailment. Systems pharmacology has three main principles that differ from conventional pharmaceutical discovery, Dr. Conlon says.“Biology is really complex and there is a lot going on and it is very robust. It's built to withstand impact generally and it doesn't ignore that. It actually looks at every single gene, every single pathway, every single protein, every single feedback, feedforward, inhibition, everything that is going on and almost looks at it as a big network.”“It’s never, ever scientifically plausible to take a single target approach. Try to put your finger on one tiny little piece of that massive complex puzzle, it's just never going to work,”“You've got to take a multi targeted approach and look at the best combinations of targets within all of that complexity and understand how you can target them.”Nuchido looked at NAD+ through that lens and wanted to repair the ways our bodies lose that NAD. Dr. Conlon and her team of scientists and scientific advisors– several who are giants in the field of biogerontology–identified the right combination of targets to restore cellular NAD+ production back to youthful levels, leading to the development of a breakthrough NAD+ booster called Nuchido TIME+. The TIME+ booster restores and improves the cell’s ability to make and recycle its own NAD+, makes cells more efficient at making NAD+ again, stops cells from wasting NAD+, and reboots the efficiency of your salvage pathway recycling. Your cell function improves and you get your energy back. Pretty cool!Dr. Conlon says, “I think people don't realize how their energy is actually really pretty bad and the brain fog is pretty bad, and then all of a sudden when it's gone, they're like, ‘Wow! I feel like I can breathe again. I've been living under a cloud.’”Enjoy! Ep 825How to Find Your Own Winning Lane – Danica Patrick with Dave Asprey : 825

On this episode of Bulletproof Radio, pretty intense professional race car driver Danica Patrick joins the show to talk about her winding journey doing all the things that excite and scare her the most. She lets her curiosity drive her, including doing what she fears. Could be bungee jumping, diving out of airplanes or eating scorpions and running wild with Bear Grylls. “It's not like I'm over the fear,” Danica admits. “I just like to know that if I have to overcome it, I can. I just like to know I can do it.”Danica started racing go-karts when she was just 10 years old. She left high school and moved to England to race when she was a teen and worked her way up to driving an IndyCar going 240 mph at age 23. She’s had gigs as a sports announcer, starred in 14 Super Bowl commercials, hosted the ESPY sports awards, created a clothing line and written a book. She’s currently a vineyard owner, hosts her own podcast, and a whole more. “I just like challenging myself,” Danica says. “I've realized that that's where I thrive, whether it was pushing a car to the very limit or interviewing someone that I'm intimidated by or hosting the ESPYs and not being funny at all. I'm like, how am I going to do this? Or even in a workout. I like to challenge myself.”This episode offers a great conversation on how we can get past the internal obstacles we tend to set up for ourselves and find our own kind of flow state. Danica’s approach to life is grounding, and we talk about how it frames everything from her foray into biohacking to her racing career. “I think that that's what's being asked of us, as humans, is that we learn how to get back into that emotional body and let that be the ultimate lie detector test for situations,” she says.Be sure to check out her podcast, “Pretty Intense™️.” She interviews fascinating people from vastly different backgrounds–again, letting her curiosity lead her. Ep 824Get Your Mojo On With All Things Keto – Dorian Greenow with Dave Asprey : 824

You’ve told me you want to hear about ketosis, ketones, glucose, monitoring your ketones, what happens when you want to go into ketosis and what happens when you want to go out of it. So, I've got a guest for you who’s definitely geeky, who has gone really, really deep on this to the point that they call him. Mr. Mojo. Dorian Greenow, founder of Keto-Mojo, shares his expertise in ketogenic research and ketone testing. This episode of Bulletproof Radio is filled with information, tips and takeaways for integrating keto into your life. Our ketone levels tell us if we’re actually burning fat to make energy, and keto test strips tell us what those ketone levels are. Different people, depending on their lifestyle and bio-individuality, will have different ranges of ideal ketone levels.“So there are different types of keto,” Dorian says. “Having it data-driven helps you refine it into the bio-individuality. And that to me is the key. I'm agnostic on whatever somebody is keto, and I'm not going to play the keto police saying, "That's not keto." The data should guide people. And once you have that, you get data-driven outcomes because the blood doesn't lie.”Keto-Mojo has developed cost-effective keto measuring devices so your own data is within reach. Keto-Mojo keeps its focus on funding ketogenic therapies and finding ways to support people in a healthy lifestyle that suits them. “I'm not about selling a meter,” Dorian says. “You'll view our website, you'll see recipes. There's over 182 hours of the leading clinicians and researchers that were once CME credits, so you can do a deep dive into the medical research that is there.”“Don't go chasing ketones, chase the results that you've got,” Dorian says. “Learn how to interpret the data.”Dorian and his wife, Gemma, also founded The Ketogenic Foundation, a 501(c)(3)non-profit Public Charity which fosters ketogenic education, medical research, and information sharing.Maybe you’re looking for ways to cope with type 2 diabetes, maybe you want to home in on your athletic performance, or maybe you’re just curious. In this episode, you’ll learn why your ketone levels change throughout the day and what your levels may mean for your overall lifestyle and more. No matter how you’ve incorporated keto (or are just thinking about it), you’ll feel like you can really make keto work for you and learn some new tips.Enjoy! This technology has incredible impacts on your longevity and recovery, and I want to make sure you learn as much as possible about it.Traditional steam and heat-based saunas warm you by heating the air and in turn, heating your body. Infrared saunas work by delivering heat directly to your body through wavelengths that are curated to easily access and transform the body. Even the sweat produced between the two is different!Different parts of the infrared light spectrum have unique benefits in serving our bodies. Near, mid and far-Infrared each offer different benefits, such as improving cell health, quickening muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure and more.“There's been studies showing that infrared can help reduce colds, flus,” Connie says. “The increase in core temperature helps with the antiviral effect as far as activating heat shock proteins and kind of helping to prepare the body to be stronger.”Other studies have shown a connection between core temperature and reduction of depression or major depression symptoms.“So with infrared, if you can get the maximum heat and you've mastered the wavelength, then you can get it all into your body to change and transform your body,” Connie says. Every part of a Sunlighten sauna is intentional–from the type of wood they use (yes, wood can have a chemical reaction to heat) to the construction of the sauna itself.“This is all about living the world a healthier place as a result of what we're doing every day,” Connie says. “And we want to do it to the maximum.”Enjoy! Ep 822How to Build Your Community and Grow Your Influence – Jon Levy with Dave Asprey : 822

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Jon Levy shares that the greatest predictors of longevity are close social ties and how much you feel like a part of a community. Jon is a behavioral scientist who researches human connection, trust and influence. He can teach you how to build your own communities and in turn, grow your influence exponentially. He’s done it himself by creating a private community of more than 2,000 industry leaders including Nobel laureates, Olympians, celebrities, executives, royalty, and more.“If I wanted to accomplish things like being healthy, happy and successful, the most important thing I could do is figure out how to connect with extraordinary people and also connect them with each other. So, I needed to figure out ‘how do I hack connection?’” says Jon. “How do I hack trust and how do we use that to create a positive impact?”In order to create connections in a new relationship, you have to start by building trust. Jon’s research found that trust is made up of three pillars: competence, honesty/integrity and benevolence. There are ways to use these three pillars to build really meaningful relationships with people you’ve just met. Jon says these new relationships you build directly relate to your level of influence.“Our influence is a by-product of who we're connected to, how much they trust us, and the sense of community that we share. So, if it starts with connecting with people, it starts with an invitation,” Jon says.In his new book “You’re Invited: The Art and Science of Cultivating Influence,” you’ll learn how an invitation can be the beginning of a new relationship. Jon’s research also looks at topics like how to build relationships in families and the pandemic workplace to the trust-building ideas of door-to-door knives salesmen.Enjoy! Ep 8217 Ways to Influence People – Robert Cialdini, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 821

The man who pioneered the science and psychology of Influence returns to Bulletproof Radio today.Known as “The Godfather of Influence,” Robert Cialdini, Ph.D., is the foundational expert in the science of influence and how to apply it ethically in business. After nearly 40 years of evidence-based, peer-reviewed scientific research, he’s earned a global reputation for his ability to translate his scientific studies into valuable and practical actions. This makes his principles of influence and persuasion accessible to everyone and a cornerstone for people and organizations serious about effectively increasing their influence. In this episode, you’re going to learn about the psychology of why people say yes and the brand-new principle of influence Robert has added to the original six, which is unity.“Unity is a standalone principle of influence,” Robert says. “ If we can, as communicators, simply arrange our language, arrange how we comport ourselves so that people see us as partners with them before we begin the process of trying to move them in our direction, their barriers to influence drop dramatically.”His latest book, “Influence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of Persuasion,” includes new research so you can become an even more skilled persuader using all seven principles. You’ll also learn how social influence improves personal relationships and governmental effectiveness and affects work relationships and political decisions.Robert is president and CEO of Influence at Work and a prolific public speaker. His work and books have been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, Inc., Psychology Today Magazine, on the PBS Newshour, and on many podcasts and media outlets.Enjoy! Ep 8208 Reasons Why Obesity Isn’t the Problem, Metabolic Dysfunction Is – Dr. Robert Lustig with Dave Asprey : 820

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L., the New York Times bestselling author of several books about the problems caused by sugar, processed food and the health conditions of obesity, shares his expertise and research about metabolic health. He addresses nutrition, food science, and global health, and explains how by focusing on real food we can reverse chronic disease and promote longevity. He also challenges the current healthcare paradigm and the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government. Dr. Lustig is a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who’s spent his 40-plus year career treating and finding ways to prevent obesity and diabetes. He’s emeritus professor of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. He's authored 130 peer-reviewed articles, 80 academic chapters and reviews, and dozens of op-eds for the public. He now has a new book to explain the eight pathologies that underlie all chronic disease and document how processed food has impacted our health, economy, and environment over the past 50 years. “So all these medicines that we currently throw at these various chronic diseases, they are treating the symptoms of the disease but they are not treating the underlying pathology,” Dr. Lustig says. “The disease is still there.”The eight pathologies we discuss include glycation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, membrane instability, inflammation, epigenetics, and autophagy. “It’s not about obesity, it never was,” Dr. Lustig says. “The key to the kingdom is that it is not about obesity, it is about metabolic dysfunction and anyone can get it, and that’s what makes it a public health crisis, because obesity is a result of the problem, not the cause. I never want to hear any of you talk about the obesity epidemic ever again, because that is the food industry’s mantra, that is what they use to obfuscate the truth, and you play right into it when you talk about it.” In his new book, “Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine,” Dr. Lustig proposes a strategy to cure both us and the planet. Enjoy! Ep 819Change Your Body Position To Get Better Sleep – Dr. Peter Martone with Dave Asprey : 819

This episode of Bulletproof Radio kicks off Better Sleep Month. Sleep hacking is core to what I do, so I wanted to invite someone on who’s dedicated to that practice. I’m talking with Dr. Peter Martone who is a chiropractor, exercise physiologist and inventor of the Neck Nest, a pillow specifically designed to improve your sleeping postures. Here's a challenge: try watching a two-hour movie in the position you normally sleep in. Peter bets you won’t last more than 30 minutes without needing to move. You spend eight hours a night (ideally) sleeping, and a third of your life in total, so the way you orient your body during sleep is incredibly important. What position should we try to move to? Our backs! As Peter says, we were designed to sleep in a position that distributes our weight over the greatest surface area. When you sleep on your side, you lose the cervical curve in your spine and overtime develop scoliosis in your lower back. “It’s no coincidence that your sleep center and your pain center are right next door to each other,” Peter says. You can't stay in an uncomfortable position during sleep, because your body will toss out of it. “Sleeping on your back, if you can do it without your back hurting, without snoring like a machine, that's ideal.”I had always felt pain every time I slept on my back, but ever since I started using this pillow, I’m a back sleeper. This pillow, once broken in, uses traction to support and restore your spine to that cervical curve. You only need to use it two to three hours a night to restore that curve.“Being on a computer all day, texting all day, our spines are getting destroyed,” Peter says. “Our sleep scores are getting destroyed because we're tossing and turning all night long. You can fix your spine while you sleep, get 30% better sleep scores by just changing your position, and you can virtually eliminate neck and back pain by doing it while you sleep. It's crazy to me that we're a side sleeping culture, and I am trying to do my part to create the happiest, healthiest, most well-rested people on earth by teaching them how to sleep in a different position.”The conversation also goes into heart rate variability, vagus nerve stimulation, deep sleep, energy spikes, circadian rhythms and other tips for getting great sleep. Enjoy! Ep 818The Fatigue Fix: Your Hormones, Gut and Immune System – Dr. Amy Shah with Dave Asprey : 818

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with Amy Shah, M.D., a double board-certified medical doctor specializing in allergy and immunology, hormones and gut health. After a car accident and personal energy crisis she searched for a complete mental, hormonal, and inflammatory reset. And while she uses an integrative and holistic approach to wellness in her medical practice, what she learned about energy and fatigue connected a lot of dots.Regulating the “energy trifecta,” made up of balanced hormones, a well-functioning gut, and a healthy immune system, makes all the difference. (She’s also an expert in circadian rhythm fasting.) “These three areas communicate, and they talk to the brain constantly,” says Dr. Amy. “And if any of those are broken, then you're going to be tired. And so things like short fasting, circadian fasting, sinking with nature and circadian rhythms, which is our internal clock and eating the right foods really can make a difference. And of course, there's this whole component of mind, body health, which we sorely miss in Western culture.”What you eat, when you eat and mind-body health rule your energy patterns and likely could be the root cause of your fatigue.“For far too long, all of our concerns about why we're so tired just get brushed off,” Dr. Amy says. “If you don't show up as visibly sick and failing on a lab test, you're basically pushed aside and said, "Okay, it must be, you are getting older, you have a busy life." For women, it's like, you're a mom, you're trying to do too many things. And nobody really gives us any direction, we're left to our own defenses.”We’re going to talk about how she lays out solutions in her new book, "I'M SO EFFING TIRED: A Proven Plan to Beat Burnout, Boost Your Energy, and Reclaim Your Life."Enjoy! Ep 817Adult Talk: How to Get Your Kids to Meditate – Emily Fletcher with Dave Asprey : 817

When your kids are calmer and learning how to work with their thoughts and emotions, your quality of life as a parent goes way up. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Ziva meditation creator Emily Fletcher joins me to talk about helping kids learn to meditate and her new zivaKIDS program that gives kids new superpowers.*Catch episode guest Emily Fletcher at the Virtual Biohacking Conference on May 8! Details and discounts below.*For over a decade Emily has been teaching her own ZIVA meditation technique. She’s reached more than 40,000 students so far, including Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award winners, Navy SEALS, NBA players, entrepreneurs and anyone looking to make their life better. Busy parents, too.“I wanted to take the pressure off of parents,” Emily says. “Especially right now, parents are being asked to do an extraordinary amount of things: homeschool their kids, learn to become science teachers, deal with the emotional and psychological ramifications of isolation,” she says. “The last thing I wanted parents to do was have to become a meditation salesperson or a meditation police officer.”She’s worked with Sesame Street, leading child psychologists and professors from Harvard, to create zivaKIDS. Emily knows that getting your kid to meditate is no easy feat, so we talk a lot about how to encourage them to take that next step in an open, honest and age-appropriate way. She has a practice for 4-to 8-year-olds and 9-to 14-year-olds. She also offers training for parents or other adults in the child’s life on how to be a good sidekick. The Ziva technique de-excites the nervous system to induce deep rest, so much so that it can heal stresses from both the present and the past. These stresses apply to humans of all ages, and that’s why Emily is so passionate about her practice. “If you learn these tools at [a young] age, your resilience and your ability to metabolize high demand situations for the rest of your life will be better,” she says. She says meditation is not a magic pill to bury your emotions. When you’re sad or angry you can’t fix it by just counting your breaths, but instead meditation can teach us how to change our state when we’re ready. Emily’s view of meditation, for both kids and adults, is practical and flexible. On this episode you’ll learn how your practice (and your kids’!) will ebb and flow, but how you will always carry the power of the practice within you and have the tools you need to feel safe with your body, your emotions and yourself.Enjoy! Earth Day Bonus: How to Fix the Global Food System and Save the Planet – Dr. Mark Hyman

bonus

In recognition of Earth Day, this incredible episode replay with Dr. Mark Hyman gets into the dark realities of the global food system and the policies that make it possible. He says his 2020 book, “Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet—One Bite at a Time” is the most important one he’s ever written."Our food system end to end is the No. 1 cause of climate change, which is a big shock for me when I started writing this book," Dr. Hyman says. "I was like, "Oh, yeah, greenhouse gases, cow farts, cow burps, methane," and all that. I got that 14%, whatever the estimate is, but when you add it all up, the deforestation, the soil erosion, the factory farming, the processing, distributing, transport, refrigeration, food waste. You add it all up, it's almost 50% of our climate change contribution, more than oil. We need to think about multiple types of solutions."A frequent – and popular – guest on Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Hyman always innovates and pushes boundaries of what’s possible for human wellness. He's a practicing family physician and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, and educator in the field of Functional Medicine. He’s also a New York Times best-selling author more than a dozen times over.In "Food Fix," you'll learn why it's critical to become aware of the health and economic impact of our food system andtake action. Dr. Hyman offers ways to take on the many inequalities and injustices of our modern food industry and solutions to save our food environment. It's going to take everyone getting involved to make radical change happen – from small farms to food policies."I'm building a whole Food Fix campaign to drive policy change," Dr. Hyman says. "If we keep the status quo in policy, it's going to be very difficult."Enjoy! This system asks a lot of “whys” and goes way beyond standard treatments into diet, stress, lifestyle and more.“As I started going into Ayurvedic medicine and started seeing the enormous benefit that it had on chronic neurological conditions that I couldn't even treat, I just started going deeper and deeper into these ancient traditions,” Dr. Chaudhary says. “What we thought were metaphors, just poetic writings in these ancient texts, all of a sudden you realize that they were actually treatise on quantum biology, which is a field that has yet to really take root.”She’s president and co-founder of Habit Change California and works with healthcare organizations on how to integrate allopathic, complementary, and alternative therapies.Dr. Chaudhary branched out even further to lead an Ayurvedic center in India where she implements the use of sound medicine into the treatment of chronic disease and also studies ancient Siddha texts that have been hidden from public view for centuries. Our conversation gets into the themes of her newest book, “Sound Medicine: How to Use the Ancient Science of Sound to Heal the Body and Mind.” We explore how much sound affects us, from our earliest memories to our dying breath, and even in our medical care.  “We actually are already using sound medicine,” Dr. Chaudhary says. “People just aren't recognizing it. Ultrasound is a form of sound medicine. Lithotripsy, which if anybody's had kidney stones and they have broken them using sound waves, that is a form of sound medicine.” There’s even an FDA-approved cosmetic procedure using sound to reverse aging. In her book, she explains, “The fundamental difference between the use of sound in Western medicine and alternative medicine is that the former relies on ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves—inaudible frequencies—while the latter draws on vibrations that we can actually hear.”Dr. Chaudhary shares what she’s learned through Siddha medicine, a traditional system of healing that originated in South India that’s existed for over 8,000 years. We also talk about how the medical community has long recognized the power of sound to affect the body—both in diagnostics and treatment. And how we can use mantras, positive self-talk, Nãda Yoga and more to channel the power of sound for healing.BONUS: Downloadable information and instructions about the mantra Dr. Chaudhary sings during the episode. Enjoy!Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.  WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 814Free Your Breath and Your Body Follows – ‘Yoga Rebel’ Tara Stiles with Dave Asprey : 814

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with Tara Stiles, founder of Stråla Yoga, whose approach to yoga and meditation is to make it as inclusive, unpretentious and accessible as possible. “I love the saying, if you can breathe, you can do yoga,” Tara says. “And especially if you're interested in doing it, then follow that intuition. Whether you're young or old or somewhere in between, or have a problem or have any limitations or whatever it is.”Tara says practicing yoga is about so much more than just the physical poses, but about building up your physical, spiritual and mental energy so you can show up and be present and leave content. That comes from developing fluidity in your life, finding alignment in your internal and external environments, and listening to your body. “So, it's really moving slow enough so you can notice what's happening. Allowing your breath to move your body, I think is amazing,” Tara says. “We miss out on all of our potential and how easily we can move when we ignore our breath-body connection, as well.”The mind-body connection is what allows her to truly tune in, and she encourages everyone she teaches to find that oneness of their own. One of her tips? Get down on the ground. Even a brief few minutes moving from your chair to the floor, practicing some short cat-cow exercises to get movement circulating through your body, or just deep breathing practice, are great ways to take a break and listen to what parts of you might need a little more attention. In her new book, “Clean Mind, Clean Body: A 28-Day Plan for Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Self-Care,” Tara shows how you can integrate well-being into every part of your life. She guides you through a mental and spiritual cleanse, and outlines ways you can change your nutrition and movement."I'm trying to broach the subject here of more living in line with your energy and trying to harness your energy and have more of it when you need more of it,” she says. She’s considered a “yoga rebel” because she doesn’t follow any conventional dogma that often keeps the practice out of reach.“A lot of times with yoga, it can be so dogmatic and so student-teacher, messed-up relationship that the student just depletes their energy and forces their body into these strange positions,” Tara explains. “And then, just to be simple about it, it messes up their life and messes up their energy, which is the opposite of what yoga is supposed to do for you.”Instead, “There's this great principle of softness,” she says. “If you just allow yourself to be moveable, bendable in your joints first, but then an emotional softness, relaxing a little bit, then all of a sudden your breath starts to move your body naturally, your breath gets bigger and more full.” Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.  WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 813Why You Can’t Live Without Minerals – BEAM Minerals with Dave Asprey : 813

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we talk about minerals, ask some foundational questions about why they matter to your biology, and why you probably would do a lot better as a biohacker, or just as a human being who wants to be hard to kill, if you pay way more attention to them.We have more than 30 trillion cells in our body and every single one of them requires minerals to function. You can’t live without minerals. Caroline Alan, co-founder of BEAM Minerals, knows first-hand the importance of minerals. Before she started with BEAM, she was working under the constant stress of a corporate career. She had inflammation throughout her body, especially in the gut and mouth. And her adrenals were fatigued. She also had headaches every day, previously unknown gluten intolerance and other body pain. She spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to get better, but nothing worked until she started taking minerals. The minerals allowed her body to naturally heal and come back to homeostasis. She then went deep into research about minerals and how they work on human physiology, especially plant-based fulvic and humic mineral complexes. This included microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, agricultural soil science and the study of plant decomposition. A tablespoon of healthy dirt has 10 billion microbes. Each of those microbes excretes a substance called humin, which is the most concentrated form of mineral out there. BEAM Minerals provides fulvic and humic minerals in appropriate amounts that open up new pathways for absorption and allow your cells to take in the good stuff and clear out the gunk. This episode gets into mineral depletion and supplementation. What helps your body, why and in what forms. You'll learn why Ionic liquid minerals are immediately bioavailable at the cellular level. Another plus? Specific flavonoid benefits of fulvic supercharge any vitamin supplements you’re already taking by making them more easily assimilated by your cells. Cool stuff.“These humic and fulvic complexes, they're like Mother Nature's answer to mineral supplementation,” Caroline says.Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.SPECIAL OFFER FOR BULLETPROOF RADIO LISTENERShttps://www.beamminerals.com, use code DAVE to get 20% off. Ep 812How Fasting Resets Your Biology and Helps You Live Longer – Valter Longo, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 812

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with a godfather of fasting, Professor Valter Longo, Ph.D. He started researching fasting decades before anyone else started paying much attention to it. In 2018, TIME Magazine named Prof. Longo as one of the 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets as a way to improve health and prevent disease. He’s director of the Longevity Institute at University of Southern California-Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles, and director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the Italian Foundation of Cancer Research. “Fasting really in my mind is probably the most powerful way to reset and help regenerate, but also help clear junk and damage that is accumulated,” Prof. Longo says. Our conversation hits the high points of how and why to fast, and also goes into the research that got us to what we know today and looks at what’s next. We talk about everything from Prof. Longo's foundational research on yeast to the possibility of having future technology that tells us how to fast based on certain blood markers or gut bacteria. He’s also focused his work on the nutrients present in the fats, proteins and carbs we choose to consume during our fasts. “Without understanding how nutrients such as proteins and sugars affect cellular function, aging and aging damage, and regeneration, it's difficult to determine the type and quantity of nutrients for optimal longevity,” Prof. Longo says in his book, “The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight.” Beyond fasting, Prof. Longo created five pillars of longevity related to nutrition and human biology: juventology (the study of youth), epidemiology, clinical studies, centenarian studies, and the study of complex systems. We also discuss bigger philosophical questions and the ethics surrounding longevity. What would it mean to try and live forever? And what does longevity mean in the face of advancing technology that may boost our life span by 50 to 100 years? “I think technology is going to take over in the next 50 years and I think bionics is going to take over in the next 50 years,” Prof. Longo says. “It’s going to be a very different world; it’s going to be a very different approach. And it’s going to be an approach that has to do much more with memory and memory transfer, and all kinds of crazy things.”Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 811How to Get a Handle on Your Histamine – Dr. Becky Campbell with Dave Asprey : 811

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to learn a lot you probably didn’t know about histamine. Turns out histamine is a major neurotransmitter that affects your awareness, food cravings, tiredness and inflammation. I’m talking with Dr. Becky Campbell, a board-certified doctor of natural medicine who focuses on histamine issues based on experiences from her patients and her own life.Histamine is a very important part of the immune system and plays a role in inflammation in the body. We also need histamine in order to digest food, move our bowels, boost exercise performance, increase attention, and get blood as well as nutrients and oxygen delivered to different parts of the body. But things can go off track.Histamine intolerance is not a sensitivity to histamine, but an indication that too much of it has built up in the body, or that there is an inability to break it down properly. So, how could high histamine affect you?“Migraines, passing out,” Dr. Campbell says. “Eating and having a really fast heart rate for no reason, having anxiety out of the blue for no reason. Any type of dermatitis, or hives, or flushing, random diarrhea, going from sitting to standing and getting dizzy. It's all over the place.”Fatigue immediately after eating also can be an indicator. “My biggest symptom of histamine intolerance is fatigue,: Dr. Campbell says. “I would eat something that was supposedly healthy for me, like fermented food, and literally felt like I took a sleeping pill.”It’s a natural response for our body to release histamine, but if we can’t break it down (which can happen from reduced enzyme activity, various gut issues, from vitamin deficiencies and more) it becomes a problem. She shares what foods to avoid and what foods to eat when you’re dealing with histamine intolerance. The most common high histamine foods include pork, citrus, fermented foods, alcohol, and aged meats and cheeses. If you eat a high histamine food and your body isn’t prepared to break it down, the mast cells that produce it (and other inflammatory chemicals) can just pour it out into the body, resulting in a lot of inflammation.  Dr. Campbell estimates up to 40 percent of people could have some degree of histamine sensitivity. Vitamin C, quercetin and zinc can help.If you know (or maybe are beginning to think) high histamine negatively affects you, Dr. Becky gives you some great tips so you can identify symptoms and histamine culprits in your diet, and start finding solutions. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Submit via this form.  WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 810Conquer Your Cycle at Every Age – Stephanie Estima, D.C., with Dave Asprey : 810

Great In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Stephanie Estima encourages women to start the process of owning their health by collecting data on their cycle. That way, women can start to understand their body’s individuality and work with it, not against it.She’s a doctor of Chiropractic with expertise in female metabolism and body composition who joined me on the show to discuss her new book “The Betty Body: A Geeky Goddess’ Guide To Intuitive Eating, Balanced Hormones, And Transformative Sex.”The term “Betty” originally came from the fans of her podcast “Better! With Dr. Stephanie,” but it ended up fitting just right for what she stands for as a woman and a doctor. As she says in her book: “Betty is a fully embodied force of nature. Her intuition knows what her body needs and how to attend to herself to nourish, not punish. A Betty is sexiness embodied.”When you’re in the worst part of your cycle and feel irritable and/or exhausted, Dr. Stephanie says it can be a time to look inwards and re-evaluate how and why you feel the way that you do. You’ll learn about what phases of your cycle are best for what activities; like, what is the best time to do a HIIT workout? Conduct an interview? Launch a new project? Start fasting? She also explains the ways keto and fasting can negatively impact women, most commonly through bad sleep and hair loss. She says women can manipulate three variables in fasting for more success: the type of fast, the length of fast and the frequency of fast. You learn why you have to pay attention to leptin resistance and what helps to fix keto for women.“We often think that health is this really difficult full-time job that we all need to hire the personal trainer, and the body worker, and the nutritionist, and the chef,” she says. “Once we step into the intuitive nature that our bodies already have and begin to decode the signals, then you really become more attuned with your body rhythms and you'll be able to respond appropriately.”Add in knowing your metabolic markers, focusing on muscle strength, and eating for nutritional needs, not calorie counting.Dr. Stephanie shares a lot of knowledge we’ve never had on the show before, and she does it in a way that I find super empowering. Coronal plane exercises and brain health, anyone? Yep, you’ll learn that here, too. She does an incredible job encouraging women to own their period, and through that, their body and their powerful presence in the world.Enjoy!
