When Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor was 37, she had a stroke that completely shut down the left hemisphere of her brain. Now neuroscience shows that it’s not that simple. In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. This means each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain.To put it simply, the left brain defines your individuality. There’s a group of cells working to constantly take in more information to define you. The right brain processes everything through an emotional and not-so-linear lens, telling us we are as big and open and expansive as the universe. “From my perspective, I became more when I experienced the stroke, because what I gained was the awareness that I was as big as the universe,” Dr. Jill explains. “As I gained my relationship to the atoms and molecules around me, I expanded and became open. And then I became aware that if I'm going to be a functional human being in the world, I needed to gain some of those skill sets back from that left hemisphere,” she says. “I have so much awareness now of who and what I really am as a living being.”In her new book “Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters that Drive our Life,” Dr. Jill outlines four characters that map different parts of our brain. They correspond to the thinking and feeling elements in both brain hemispheres. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, molecular biologist Dr. Nichola Conlon joins me to talk about the role of a little molecule found in every cell in your body that has a huge impact on aging. She specializes in the study of aging as a biologically complex disorder, specifically the role of NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide). You’re going to learn about how NAD+ works in the body from this scientist who was named one of 2021’s Coolest Female Founders of UK Tech Making Huge Impacts.Dr. Conlon says a key thing for people to understand is to go back to why NAD+ actually declines. “You really need to understand actually how NAD+ is produced by the cells when they're young.”NAD+ is a natural molecule found in every cell in our bodies. It’s involved in energy production, helping convert the food you eat into the energy your cells need to stay alive. It is an activator of longevity proteins that are associated with cellular health and good aging, DNA repair and more. But as you get older, those NAD+ levels rapidly decline. Dr. Conlon explored why.“It's become a lot more apparent recently that it's not just energy production that NAD+ is involved with,” Dr. Conlon says. “It's also involved in cellular maintenance and repair. It's almost like the fuel which switches on different enzymes and different processes. NAD+ is critical and actually driving DNA repair and making sure that DNA repair enzymes get to the damage site and do the job that is required.”She says she got frustrated with the lag time between scientific discovery and actually getting new supplements and drugs to consumers—often a process of 10 to 15 years. “It's like all of science is encapsulated in this bubble, where it never actually gets out to real people in the outside world,” Dr. Conlon says. So, she took her years of expertise focused on early stage drug discovery with a leading biotech firm and founded Nuchido. She uses a “systems pharmacology” approach to look at the complexity of our individual biology because there’s no single magic bullet for any ailment. Systems pharmacology has three main principles that differ from conventional pharmaceutical discovery, Dr. Conlon says.“Biology is really complex and there is a lot going on and it is very robust. It's built to withstand impact generally and it doesn't ignore that. It actually looks at every single gene, every single pathway, every single protein, every single feedback, feedforward, inhibition, everything that is going on and almost looks at it as a big network.”“It’s never, ever scientifically plausible to take a single target approach. Try to put your finger on one tiny little piece of that massive complex puzzle, it's just never going to work,”“You've got to take a multi targeted approach and look at the best combinations of targets within all of that complexity and understand how you can target them.”Nuchido looked at NAD+ through that lens and wanted to repair the ways our bodies lose that NAD. Dr. Conlon and her team of scientists and scientific advisors– several who are giants in the field of biogerontology–identified the right combination of targets to restore cellular NAD+ production back to youthful levels, leading to the development of a breakthrough NAD+ booster called Nuchido TIME+. I’m talking with Dr. Peter Martone who is a chiropractor, exercise physiologist and inventor of the Neck Nest, a pillow specifically designed to improve your sleeping postures.Here's a challenge: try watching a two-hour movie in the position you normally sleep in. Peter bets you won’t last more than 30 minutes without needing to move. Our backs! As Peter says, we were designed to sleep in a position that distributes our weight over the greatest surface area. When you sleep on your side, you lose the cervical curve in your spine and overtime develop scoliosis in your lower back. “It’s no coincidence that your sleep center and your pain center are right next door to each other,” Peter says. You can't stay in an uncomfortable position during sleep, because your body will toss out of it. “Sleeping on your back, if you can do it without your back hurting, without snoring like a machine, that's ideal.”I had always felt pain every time I slept on my back, but ever since I started using this pillow, I’m a back sleeper. This pillow, once broken in, uses traction to support and restore your spine to that cervical curve. You only need to use it two to three hours a night to restore that curve.“Being on a computer all day, texting all day, our spines are getting destroyed,” Peter says. “Our sleep scores are getting destroyed because we're tossing and turning all night long. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with Tara Stiles, founder of Stråla Yoga, whose approach to yoga and meditation is to make it as inclusive, unpretentious and accessible as possible. “I love the saying, if you can breathe, you can do yoga,” Tara says. “And especially if you're interested in doing it, then follow that intuition. Whether you're young or old or somewhere in between, or have a problem or have any limitations or whatever it is.”Tara says practicing yoga is about so much more than just the physical poses, but about building up your physical, spiritual and mental energy so you can show up and be present and leave content. That comes from developing fluidity in your life, finding alignment in your internal and external environments, and listening to your body. “So, it's really moving slow enough so you can notice what's happening. Allowing your breath to move your body, I think is amazing,” Tara says. “We miss out on all of our potential and how easily we can move when we ignore our breath-body connection, as well.”The mind-body connection is what allows her to truly tune in, and she encourages everyone she teaches to find that oneness of their own. One of her tips? Get down on the ground. Even a brief few minutes moving from your chair to the floor, practicing some short cat-cow exercises to get movement circulating through your body, or just deep breathing practice, are great ways to take a break and listen to what parts of you might need a little more attention. In her new book, “Clean Mind, Clean Body: A 28-Day Plan for Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Self-Care,” Tara shows how you can integrate well-being into every part of your life. In 2018, TIME Magazine named Prof. Longo as one of the 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets as a way to improve health and prevent disease.He’s director of the Longevity Institute at University of Southern California-Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles, and director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the Italian Foundation of Cancer Research. “Fasting really in my mind is probably the most powerful way to reset and help regenerate, but also help clear junk and damage that is accumulated,” Prof. Longo says.Our conversation hits the high points of how and why to fast, and also goes into the research that got us to what we know today and looks at what’s next. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’re going to learn a lot you probably didn’t know about histamine. Turns out histamine is a major neurotransmitter that affects your awareness, food cravings, tiredness and inflammation. I’m talking with Dr. Becky Campbell, a board-certified doctor of natural medicine who focuses on histamine issues based on experiences from her patients and her own life.Histamine is a very important part of the immune system and plays a role in inflammation in the body. We also need histamine in order to digest food, move our bowels, boost exercise performance, increase attention, and get blood as well as nutrients and oxygen delivered to different parts of the body. But things can go off track.Histamine intolerance is not a sensitivity to histamine, but an indication that too much of it has built up in the body, or that there is an inability to break it down properly.So, how could high histamine affect you?“Migraines, passing out,” Dr. Campbell says. “Eating and having a really fast heart rate for no reason, having anxiety out of the blue for no reason. Any type of dermatitis, or hives, or flushing, random diarrhea, going from sitting to standing and getting dizzy. It's all over the place.”Fatigue immediately after eating also can be an indicator. “My biggest symptom of histamine intolerance is fatigue,: Dr. Campbell says. “I would eat something that was supposedly healthy for me, like fermented food, and literally felt like I took a sleeping pill.”It’s a natural response for our body to release histamine, but if we can’t break it down (which can happen from reduced enzyme activity, various gut issues, from vitamin deficiencies and more) it becomes a problem. She shares what foods to avoid and what foods to eat when you’re dealing with histamine intolerance.The most common high histamine foods include pork, citrus, fermented foods, alcohol, and aged meats and cheeses. If you eat a high histamine food and your body isn’t prepared to break it down, the mast cells that produce it (and other inflammatory chemicals) can just pour it out into the body, resulting in a lot of inflammation. Dr. Campbell estimates up to 40 percent of people could have some degree of histamine sensitivity. He’s responsible for the isolation and characterization of the first streptococcal bacteriocin and wrote the first major review of the bacteriocins of gram-positive bacteria.Prof. Tagg’s pioneering research led to the discovery of two probiotic bacterial strains. These strains of 'friendly' bacteria are effective in crowding out bad bacteria in the mouth. Both are strains of S. salivarius, which are naturally found in the oral cavity of healthy humans.One is the world’s first oral probiotic strain from the mouth for the mouth.The other probiotic strain specifically targets dental and gum health.Most people don’t have very much of either of these beneficial strains, so a daily supplement is a great way to boost the good bacteria in the mouth to help with throat health, teeth and gum health and bad breath.
