Ep 809Innovative Sex Toys Help Close the Pleasure Gap – Alexandra Fine with Dave Asprey : 809

E

I talk about sex regularly on Bulletproof Radio because the energy, connection and humanity that’s a part of sexual wellness improves our lives. So does the fun factor. In this episode, credentialed sexologist Alexandra Fine talks with me about the pleasure gap and ways to close it. After earning her master’s in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in sex therapy from Columbia University, she decided to focus her passion and expertise on the world of sex tech. Alex and mechanical engineer Janet Lieberman co-founded Dame Products. These are innovative tools and resources for adult sexual well-being: solo play, couples or polyamorous if that’s your preference. Dame’s first product, Eva, became the most crowdfunded sex toy in history. Its second product, Fin, was the first sex toy allowed on Kickstarter.“We are women designing products that predominantly help people just like us have more fulfilling lives,” Alex said about getting the Fin on Kickstarter. “This isn't about prurient behavior. This isn't about being lewd or crude. This is about living a healthy life.”Beyond the obvious physical fun, Dame’s meticulously engineered vibrators designed to do three specific things:start necessary conversations, listen rather than assume, and create products that enhance intimacy. Within five years of its launch, Dame earned critical and popular acclaim, as well as praise in international media, including the New York Times, Forbes, Wired, Vice, BBC and the Today Show. Fast Company recognized Dame as one of the "most innovative wellness companies of 2020,” and Well+Good named Dame a “2020 changemaker.”Listen on to learn more about how shame-free sex and well-designed sex toys can contribute to your overall health and energy.More Sexual Health: My recent Sexual Energy Series spanned six episodes #787 to #792 featuring experts ranging from sexual fantasies to women’s health to the evolution of the penis. I’ve also covered tantric sex, orgasms, the psychology of sex and more with other guests through the years.Enjoy! Ep 808Boost Your Oral, Dental & Throat Health with Probiotics – Prof. John Tagg with Dave Asprey : 808

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re talking about bugs. The good kinds!Emeritus professor and microbiologist John Tagg has been researching bacteria since the mid 1970s and has been specifically looking for a probiotic solution to Group A Strep. He’s done this work primarily at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He’s responsible for the isolation and characterization of the first streptococcal bacteriocin and wrote the first major review of the bacteriocins of gram-positive bacteria.Prof. Tagg’s pioneering research led to the discovery of two probiotic bacterial strains. These strains of 'friendly' bacteria are effective in crowding out bad bacteria in the mouth. Both are strains of S. salivarius, which are naturally found in the oral cavity of healthy humans. One is the world’s first oral probiotic strain from the mouth for the mouth. The other probiotic strain specifically targets dental and gum health. Most people don’t have very much of either of these beneficial strains, so a daily supplement is a great way to boost the good bacteria in the mouth to help with throat health, teeth and gum health and bad breath. Prof. Tagg partners with BLIS Technologies to create supplements for throat, dental and oral health."The real importance is that the mouth is the portal of entry of most microbes, good or bad, for the human body," says Prof. Tagg. "We have our skin microflora, of course. But I believe that by focusing attention on having a healthy and protective oral microbiota, you cannot only sort of interfere, you can delay or divert infections or disease of the oral cavity, then it can have a flow on effect also to the gut."You’re going to learn a lot of new information about good bacteria and probiotics from an expert who’s dedicated decades of time, authored more than 230 research publications on the topic and isolated over 2,000 bacterial strains. Enjoy! Ep 807A New Way to Control Your Blood Sugar – BiOptimizers with Dave Asprey : 807

Great PodMonitoring your blood sugar is one of the most important interventions you can make for yourself in order to live long and truly feel good. If you have diabetes, your cardiovascular disease risk, your cancer risk and your Alzheimer's risk all go up dramatically. So, what if we were to just put on our thinking hats as biohackers and say, "Which intervention has the highest ROI for reducing my odds of dying from everything?" Regulating your blood sugar would be very, very high on the list, probably more important than exercise, even though exercise can be a method of controlling your blood sugar and exercise and movement are important, no doubt about it. If you didn't move around and your blood sugar was highly regulated, you'd be better off than if you had irregular blood sugar and you moved around. It's that big of a deal.In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Wade Lightheart and Matt Gallant are back on the show. This time, they’re letting you know how to get control of your blood sugar spikes and drops, and instead find a stable middle ground. These two BiOptimizers cofounders have decades of combined experience in health, nutrition and exercise. They really get how the brain and body work together for maximum performance and realize so much of that has to do with our blood sugar. “Our pancreases are both four and a half times the size per body weight of any species on the planet because we eat so much sugar,” Matt says. “That's what involved in the regulation and distribution of insulin.”If you don’t manage your blood sugar, there will be consequences. But when you find a way to maintain stable glucose levels, your body learns how to convert glucose into energy more effectively. This leads to better performance.  Your body repairs and you have more energy for thinking and moving. We talk about ketones, carbs and how to keep your blood sugar at a consistent level (even when you have those days where you eat a 4,000 calorie meal). You’ll also learn how you can best collect data on what works for your body and how the active ingredients work in BiOptimizer’s Blood Sugar Breakthrough supplement. “As great as our product is and it's really awesome, I want to also caution people,” Wade says. “You can't supplement your way out of a bad diet, and you want to take data, and you want to correlate it with biofeedback.”Enjoy! Ep 806How Fitness Saved a Life and Became a Livelihood – Doug Bopst with Dave Asprey : 806

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio my guest shares an inspiring life story about addiction, adversity and resilience.Doug Bopst is an award-winning personal trainer, author, speaker and host of the Adversity Advantage podcast. His journey traverses a difficult childhood, an addiction spiral and time in jail.He credits a judge, a cell mate, and unexpectedly finding faith with 12 years of sobriety and his ability to help others change and reclaim their own lives. His transformation started with fitness in jail to help him recover from drug addiction. Exercise changed his body, his state of mind and his ability to continuously show up for himself. “I was finally able to get comfortable being uncomfortable,” Doug says. “I was finally able to face my fears and face my emotions, really, head on, and learn to channel a lot of that pain into something good.”Post-jail time, he found new ways to manage his emotions. Where before he would have used drugs to respond to negative thoughts and feelings, he began relying on exercise, which built up his self-confidence.“When I was working out, it wasn't necessarily as much to get in shape as it was for me to relearn how to deal with my emotions in a way that was conducive to who I wanted to become,” Doug says.Doug also shares how his self-support system developed over time, and the importance of a full healthy lifestyle, not just a good fitness routine. For him, feeling good isn’t just about exercise, but a network of family, faith, therapy, meditation and eating right. He encourages the people that he trains to find their own version of a full, healthy life. No one thing can be a solution, but instead it’s all a part of journey of self-forgiveness, healing and finding the things that feel good for you.“A lot of this stuff that I've been doing is simply to help people, give people hope, whether that's somebody who's struggling with addiction, whether that's a parent, whether that's somebody who's just struggling to feel better about themselves,” Doug says. “That's my main mission right now.”Enjoy! Ep 805Self-Heal with Intermittent Fasting & Inner Bonding – Margaret Paul, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 805

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we find out how my guest, 81-year-old Margaret Paul, Ph.D., has sustained intermittent fasting (IF) for more than 50 years!Although IF may be a newer concept with regard to health and wellness, research has been happening for decades. And some people have been following IF for that long because it works for their own biology.“I started intermittent fasting when I was about 30,” Margaret says. “And it's been fantastic in my life. I started learning about food in my early 20s, because I was a sickly kid, and I just didn't want to be sick. … I'm grateful that I found out about intermittent fasting before it was even a word. I mean, they didn't call it that then, but that's what it was.”She was ahead of her time with fasting and also with the inner emotional, mental and spiritual work that rounds out a healthy life. She’s a bestselling author and popular MindBodyGreen writer. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology, is a relationship expert, public speaker, consultant and artist. Her latest book is “Diet For Divine Connection: Beyond Junk Foods and Junk Thoughts to At-Will Spiritual Connection.”“My brain is very sharp. I've worked probably at this point 60 hours a week. I'm highly creative,” she says. “I love my work. I've been doing it for a very long time, and I have no desire to slow down.”Margaret co-created the powerful Inner Bonding® self-healing, six-step process. This program guides people through finding and defining their own inner worth. It allows you to let go of your wounded-ego voice that tells you you’ll never be good enough and instead operate from a higher connection of love and truth. “If you don't know how to love yourself, you don't get filled up with love, you don't have anything to share,” Margaret says. “So, you're always trying to get it. Get the love, get the approval, get the attention. Inner Bonding® is about teaching you how to do that for yourself, so that you can share that with others.” Margaret talks about ways people abandon themselves on an emotional level, like staying in their head and disconnecting from their body, judging themselves, blaming others and numbing out with addictions. During this episode, she shares how you can move beyond these patterns, access your internal higher guidance, and maintain a level of higher frequency with inputs like healthy organic foods and the practice of self-love. Enjoy! Ep 804Insulin Resistance, Fasting, Ketones and “Why We Get Sick” – Dr. Ben Bikman with Dave Asprey : 804

This episode of Bulletproof Radio runs over 90 minutes and definitely will be worth the time you’ll spend listening. We’re talking about insulin resistance, something that affects half of all adults in the U.S., a lot of our children, and is the leading cause of many common health disorders. Insulin resistance makes you less powerful every day until you get diabetes. Insulin resistance has been a focus for me for more than 10 years. It's part of the Bulletproof Diet and it's part of my book “Fast This Way.” In fact, fasting is very impactful for this. And I've asked Ben Bikman, Ph.D., a biomedical scientist and pathophysiology professor at Brigham Young University, on the show to talk about why insulin resistance is happening. Ben’s research focuses on the role of elevated insulin in regulating obesity and diabetes, including the relevance of ketones in mitochondrial function. “Insulin resistance itself will start to affect the degree to which the mitochondria work,” he says. However, when in balance, insulin is really important to our bodies. “We [speak] about insulin and its role as being a villain, but it's also very much a hero,” Ben says. “It is absolutely essential to survival.”Why is insulin important? It controls blood glucoseEvery cell has insulin receptors, and insulin tells the cell what to do with energy: when to grow, shrink, build or break.Ben brings new insights into what’s going on with insulin resistance and why we must pay attention to it. He synthesizes the latest research and information in his book, “Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease―and How to Fight It.” Due to elevated insulin, elevated stress hormones (cortisol and epinephrine) and inflammation, our bodies can become insulin resistant. Most of the population is insulin resistant and are hyper-insulinemic. This means they have metabolic inflexibility and get stuck in sugar-burning mode and never shift to burning fat, making it nearly impossible to burn or lose weight.“If you are among the majority of people whose brain is yoked to glucose, because your insulin is always high, your glucose is always high, your brain is adapted to only using glucose, and you feel that drop in glucose,” Ben explains. “You will feel the symptoms of hypoglycemia, that carb crash, you will get jittery, you'll get shaky, you'll get anxious, you'll get hungry again even though you just ate 90 minutes ago.”“It's because your brain is so addicted to glucose,” he continues, “that when it starts to drop and in the absence of ketones, which aren't there in that situation, you have no alternative.”Listen on to find out how continuous glucose monitoring can allow you to get a better of sense of your body and what you need to be eating. Ben also gives tips on the best things to eat, how to cook (or what to cook with), fasting (of course) and other ways to protect your body from disease and sickness. This episode will absolutely change your understanding of insulin resistance.Enjoy! Ep 803How to Identify Your Energy Blockers and Beat Fatigue – Dr. Steven Gundry with Dave Asprey : 803

At 70 years young, Dr. Steven Gundry feels and exudes more energy than he did at 40. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’ll talk about how you can make sure you feel the same.Dr. Gundry explains seven deadly energy disruptors that surround us in his new book, “The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone.”“The walking well have become proficient at shouldering a pretty heavy pack of fatigue,” he says in his book. “And it’s taking a toll on multiple fronts—from their personal contentment and fulfilment, to their ability to show up fully in relationships, to their ability to work.”Things like glyphosate, fructose and environmental pollutants often lead to a leaky gut, mitochondrial gridlock and an epidemic of fatigue. That means greater inflammation and less energy from the places we need it most, like our brain and muscles. “We literally are overfed and underpowered,” Dr. Gundry says. “We've been told, and you see it on commercials every day, that you need this energy drink or you need a 30-gram protein drink to get your energy up to take on the day. They literally clog the fuel line and that's our big paradox. We go into these energy disruptors in our conversation that covers the “epidemic” of fatigue and low energy that we often take as a given in our busy day-to-day lives. Today’s episode will give you actionable tips on how to get some of that energy back into your life. “We think that this is something because of our stressful existence or our hard work is just something underlying that we have to deal with or overcome,” Dr. Gundry says. “And it's absolutely not the case at all.”As a practicing cardiologist and retired cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Gundry has become a major voice in the world of food toxins and what they do to us. He teaches people how to eat, guiding them on how to get ahead of the problem, not just fixing it after the fact. He’s published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals on using diet and supplements to eliminate heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disease, and multiple other diseases. He’s also the best-selling author of “The Plant Paradox” and “The Longevity Paradox” books. Enjoy! Ep 802Why Dave Asprey Changed His Mind About Juicing – Junaid Kalmadi of Farmers Juice : 802

For a while I was anti-juicing because I found myself consuming a lot of sugar with very few health benefits. But I wanted to flip my own script and introduce you to a brand-new juice company. These juices don’t cause a blood sugar spike. Instead, you get a lot of phytonutrients and the bonus opportunity to support small farmers. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking about juicing with Farmers Juice founder and CEO Junaid Kalmadi. Farmers Juice is the world’s first keto-friendly and functional green juice line with adaptogens, antioxidants and mushrooms. These ingredients boost focus, increase athletic performance, and create a sense of calm.Farmers Juice juices contain no GMOs, artificial colors/preservatives, synthetic fertilizers or toxic persistent pesticides.“Cold-pressed juicing takes one to 1.5 pounds of produce and it separates the liquid from the solid and the juice from the pulp,” Junaid says. “It creates this really concentrated and potent beverage that has all sorts of nutrients of roughly three to five plates of salad in one drink.”And thanks to high pressure processing, Farmers Juice retains all the ingredient goodness. Another bonus that the juices stay fresh for 20 days. Most juice companies use sugar-based ingredients. Instead, Farmers Juice uses a mint, basil, lime, lemon, turmeric, and ginger combination. This gives your tastebuds a tingle every time you drink it and contains only four to five grams of sugar per juice bottle.“I think juice companies selling sugary drinks, even though they have good intentions, contribute to the health care burden of 240 million Americans being overweight or obese and nearly 125 million Americans that are diabetic or prediabetic,” Junaid says. “Juice does not need to be part of the problem; it can be part of the solution.”In addition to supporting human health, Farmers Juice also prioritizes decreasing food waste by partnering up with Alliance of Family Farms to get the “ugly produce” that often gets thrown away. Then, they donate their extra pulp to local farmers for cattle feed. All of their produce comes from small farmers in California.Farmers Juice is good for you, local farmers and the planet. That’s something I can get behind.Enjoy! Ep 801The Metabolism-Cancer Connection & How to Treat It – Dr. Charles Meakin with Dave Asprey : 801

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest approaches cancer much differently than mainstream medical thinking.Dr. Charles Meakin is Chief Medical Officer for Care Oncology Clinic USA and works specifically on metabolic treatment strategies for curing cancer. He’s also a career biohacker-physician focused on alternative and holistic treatment strategies that he hopes will shape the “fourth field of cancer care.”We talk personalized strategies and specifically about some of the drugs we take for anti-aging that are interesting for cancer care, including stuff that is a little bit shocking to me like statins. We're going to get into that, and if you're interested in metabolism, this show is for you.“Cancer hits one in two men, four in 10 women, and we spend a lot of money on it,” Dr. Meakin says. “And it's still not fixing it.”We’re learning more every day about how cancer manifests and acts in the body. Over the last 10 years, many of the same cancer screening recommendations remain intact, but a lot has changed, such as:Cancer is gradually catching up with cardiovascular disease as the primary cause of death in AmericaThe emergence of obesity as the second most common risk factor for cancerThe increased prevalence of some diseases means many more will experience cancer (1/3 women, 1/2 men)The emergence of HPV virus as a trigger for oral pharyngeal cancer is escalating Dr. Meakin brings holistic alternatives to the normal standard of care: simple balance training programs, nutrition strategies, supplements additive, portable 02, exercise bands, sleep hacks, and more. His options not only improve treatment outcomes for patients, but helps other health conditions in an accessible, inexpensive and safe way. “Our ultimate goal is a paradigm shift to not just let cancer develop, and then try to jump on it in our current ways once it's done, but to work in a better way with prevention and earlier identification,” he explains.Dr. Meakin and I explore the ways we view and treat cancer has changed over time, and how far it still has to go. You’ll learn about developments in oncology like targeted immune therapies, and a new belief called Epigenetic Theory. He doesn’t shy away from hard questions, and that’s what makes this such a great episode.Enjoy! Ep 800Why You Have to Heal Your Trauma to Free Your Energy – Tana Amen with Dave Asprey : 800

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the topic is something that drives all of us, whether we like it or not: fear and trauma. Tana Amen is just the right guest to talk about this subject. She’s a neurosurgical ICU trauma nurse, vice president of the Amen Clinics, a health and fitness expert and a New York Times best-selling author. She taken on these topics in her new book, “The Relentless Courage of a Scared Child: How Persistence, Grit, and Faith Created a Reluctant Healer.”Tana defines trauma as any event or set of events that occurred in your life that:made you think the world was unsafe, broke your trust in people that you’re surrounded by, andreally caused you to just not trust. We’ve all experienced trauma to varying degrees, so in our conversation we unpack how to identify your responses and access your inner strength.“When we don't heal from trauma, all of that energy is stuck, and it's focused on the wrong things,” Tana says. “You're stuck in this flight or fight thing. You're stuck in this mode of “I need to survive” as opposed to, "I need to just thrive and heal and live life." You can't do that. And that's one of the really big reasons to do it.”Our conversation goes into how trauma impacts your brain function and your healing process. From your biology and psychology to your social circle and spiritual circle, every influence throughout your life can change that process. "We are more beautiful, we are more complex, more interesting because of those broken pieces that we've mended back together and mends just like a scar,” Tana says. “You can be stronger because of that, as long as you heal it, as long as you allow it to set."Enjoy! Ep 7995 Steps of Neurocycle Can Clean Up Your Mental Mess – Dr. Caroline Leaf with Dave Asprey : 799

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest, Dr. Caroline Leaf, has been changing lives through her research into the human mind-brain connection for nearly four decades. “We’ve been sold such a lie that your brain controls you,” she says. The brain isn’t a generator, it’s a responder, so it has to be stimulated. We have the power to change the environment in which the brain thinks, feels and chooses. Dr. Leaf talks about how we can all use self-awareness to better understand and strengthen our minds. Her new book, Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple, Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress and Toxic Thinking, shows you ways to use your mind to biohack your brain. It may look different for everyone, but she believes wholeheartedly in our abilities to change through understanding our minds and fostering self-awareness. We can build up our brain health, resilience and strength. Dr. Leaf developed a five-stop process called Neurocycle to help us get there. “The five steps teach you how to grow a healthy thought,” she says.Listen on to learn what these five steps are and how to put them into practice in your own life. “I am absolutely 100% convinced that if we focus more on the mind and understand that we have a level of control that we use online to change our mind, we can change our brain and our body function,” Dr. Leaf says.As a communication pathologist, Dr. Leaf looks at people’s communication tendencies and the roots of those tendencies. She does so by tapping into the depths of the mind, exploring the non-conscious, conscious, and subconscious levels. During her career, she’s conducted research with people who have extreme brain damage, traumatic head injuries and many others, and directed them towards life-altering change. Enjoy! Ep 798Tame Your Dragons, Train Your Brain and Take Back Your Happiness – Dr. Daniel Amen with Dave Asprey : 798

This episode of Bulletproof Radio goes deep into the dragon psyche. No, not “Game of Thrones,” but specifically our inner dragons. “A dragon is an issue you're dealing with, that your brain is listening to, but it's not helping you,” says brain expert Dr. Daniel Amen. These dragons are the ones that “breathe fire on our emotional brain,” like anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness and more (you can find out what yours are at www.knowyourdragons.com).As a physician, double board-certified psychiatrist, professor, and author of 30 books, Dr. Amen has a lot to share about taming the beasts that beset us.  In his newest book “Your Brain is Always Listening: Tame the Hidden Dragons that Control Your Happiness, Habits and Hang-ups,” he talks about those dragon origin stories, their triggers, your reactions and how to tame them.He has a lot of tips for how we can step outside of our mind to distance ourselves from the dragon’s fire, like tuning into your pleasure centers, and how to guide your mind to look for what’s right rather than what’s wrong.“It's like a little treasure hunt,” Dr. Amen says. “And I look for even the micro moments. What are the smallest things that happened today that just made me happy? And it sets your dreams up to be more positive. These little habits are so helpful if you can make them part of your everyday life. You literally can train your brain. And when you do, your life is happier.”We talk about the ways past physical and emotional trauma may impact the way we heal, how our dragons are always interacting with other people’s dragons, how this is all affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and much more. Dr. Amen gives practical tools you can use to stop feeling sad, mad, nervous or out of control and start being happier, calmer, and more in control of your own destiny. Enjoy! Ep 797How to Control Your Blood Sugar & Spike Your Energy – Levels Health with Dave Asprey : 797

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is an engineer with expertise in metabolic dysfunction. Josh Clemente co-founded Levels Health, a company that has designed a biowearable continuous glucose monitoring device. The idea of using blood glucose, which is a marker for how much of the most common energy is available in the blood right now and how good is your body at regulating it, is a real-time feedback thing. It's really powerful. When he was working at SpaceX, he discovered his metabolic dysfunction and high glucose levels were making him feel like garbage. He read about continuous glucose monitoring, and shortly thereafter found out he was borderline pre-diabetic, despite being a CrossFit trainer at the time and having a healthy diet.Over 120 million people in the U. S. have prediabetes or diabetes, and most American adults don’t know even they’re prediabetic. Most people don’t know their glucose levels unless they find out at an annual doctor’s appointment. Using Levels technology, we can change that.“If our population isn't resilient enough to have an immune system that can fight viral infections because it is frankly undermined or hampered by insulin resistance and all of the byproducts thereof, we won't ever get there,” Josh says. “So, it is incumbent on each individual person, and I think also on society in general, to improve our metabolic health and therefore the resilience of our entire population.”Continuous glucose monitoring is crossing a barrier in health monitoring because it’s going below the skin “to an invisible metric that we otherwise wouldn't have access to” Josh explains. Biowearables is a brand-new space. Our conversation walks you through how the Levels app works, the urban myths behind “heart healthy” foods, and how tracking your glucose levels can get you better in tune with what your body really needs. “The data set is a means to changing the future of metabolic health by driving large scale research and helping us to understand how people are living, what is improving outcomes, and where the opportunity is to remove the biggest offenders for worse health,” Josh says.“The Levels app was developed for the management of diabetes,” he continues. “But we're showing that the opportunity to ultimately give people the empowerment and their health and wellness before they have something go wrong is here to stay.”Enjoy! Ep 796Intuitive Fasting, Metabolic Flexibility & Metaphysical Meals – Dr. Will Cole with Dave Asprey : 796

Fasting is about way more than what we do and don’t eat, it’s about dedicating time and energy to our full mind and body health. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking more about fasting with Dr. Will Cole, a leading functional medicine and nutrition expert and senior clinic director at Cole Natural Health Centers in Pittsburgh. His newest book, “Intuitive Fasting: The Flexible Four-Week Intermittent Fasting Plan to Recharge Your Metabolism and Renew Your Health”, presents ways to fast that are flexible and fulfilling for the needs of each unique person.“I want people to actually get to the place where they are guided by their intuition,” says Dr. Cole “Where they can hear that still small voice of that knowingness of what their body needs and what their body doesn't need, at any given moment.”Each person will react differently to different kinds of fasting. To find a practice that works for you, you’ve got to invest for the long run (not just as a fad). We’re often driven by cravings or driven by stress, anger, boredom or other unconscious motivations, without giving it a second thought. So how can we better tune in, observe and act on what our body needs? Dr. Cole advises: "Whatever that looks like for you to start to grow in awareness, start by being mindful of your relationship with your body and relationship with food and checking yourself."He walks us through the benefits of fasting, some tools to fine tune your fasting routine through mindfulness practice, and how to eat beyond your past and current habits. And maybe most importantly, he’ll teach you to be kind to yourself throughout the process. Named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the nation, Dr. Cole specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease and customizing a functional medicine approach for thyroid issues, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, and brain problems. He's also author of the best-selling books “Ketotarian” and “The Inflammation Spectrum.” Enjoy! Ep 795Truce: Paleo/Keto & Vegan Find Common Ground – Dr. Mark Hyman with Dave Asprey : 795

Dr. Mark Hyman has been on Bulletproof Radio multiple times, because he’s got a lot to teach us about food, the food industry and how to be healthy in a world full of conflicting information and unhealthy choices. In this episode, we talk about his newest book based on a Pegan Diet (Vegan+Paleo). He’s literally bridging the gap between the “right” and “wrong” sides of eating that often surround diet culture. For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets, leaving many people bewildered and confused. Dr. Hyman wants us to know that although there are foundational principles for what we eat, there’s not a one size fits all diet, which he talks about in his newest book: “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World.” “Everybody's fighting with each other and we're fighting the wrong person,” Dr. Hyman says. “We should be fighting with the traditional American diet, we call the standard American diet or the SAD diet. That's really what's driving the chronic disease epidemic.”He’s created a framework on dieting based on the fact that food is medicine, and every diet affects every person differently. Certain foods can act as magic medicine for our bodies, sometimes improving our physical and/or more mental health in a mere matter of days, but some things might not work.“No two people will thrive in the same way based on the same diet,” he says. “You might ideologically be a vegan, but it might be the worst thing for you or you might ideologically want to eat keto, but it might be the worst thing for you. On the other hand, you might thrive. It's important to understand what your body's doing.”We also talk about the power of choosing to eat as a “regenetarian,” a phrase coined by Dr. Hyman. It means the way you choose to eat is not only based on what feels good for you, but what’s good for the planet. “The way we actually grow food and the food we eat that's grown in the way it's grown degenerates our health which is why we have six out of 10 Americans with a chronic disease and 88% metabolically unhealthy. It degenerates ecological systems, environmental health and accelerates climate change. We should not be eating in a way that kills us and kills the planet, right?”As we approach crises in chronic disease, our agricultural and food systems, changing your diet can be a bigger game-changer than it’s ever been. Dr. Hyman tells us how choosing the right foods can make us and our planet healthier, so what are you waiting for? Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Ep 794Skip the Failure Porn and Other Surprising Success Advice – James Altucher with Dave Asprey : 794

Every time I talk to James Altucher, I’m in awe of whatever new thing he’s working on. He’s started and led more than 20 companies (17 of which failed) and is currently an investor in and advisor to over 30 more—from tech to energy to healthcare to biotech. How does this entrepreneur, angel investor bestselling author, chess master, cryptocurrency expert, and stand-up comedian master so many different fields? James wanted to go beyond the hard-set boundaries of the 10,000 hours rule, so on today’s episode of Bulletproof Radio, we talk about what he calls the “10,000 experiment rule.” As many of us are constantly changing jobs, careers and interests, James says that experimentation can lead you down the quickest path to success, whether it’s for two or 20 different careers. He writes all about it in his latest book “Skip the Line: The 10,000 Experiments Rule and other Surprising Advice for Reaching your Goals.”“The 10,000 hours rule, it's crippling,” James says. “It takes 20 years. But if you could really pursue what it is you love and know why you love it, and then experiment with new ways to push the frontier in this new interest that you love, you're going to be the best at how you now have individually defined the category.”James has gone from being a computer programmer to being a venture capitalist to a professional poker player. His book is inspired by the people who would tell him “it’s just not possible,” every time he switched interests. He’ll talk about how that process showed him you can probably skip some steps in your learning process, in order to quickly get better at what you want to do. He asks us to consider how you can get great at what you love and monetize what you’re interested in. It helps if you’re curious.“Curiosity is critical, because without curiosity, you won't be able to construct good experiments. An experiment is something that has little downside, enormous upside and is pretty fast to do,” James says. “And I'm doing experiments all the time in every area that I'm interested in.”It won’t always be easy. In fact, as you start to do something you love, and start to get good, it’s probably going to be hard most of the time, he says. But if you listen to his advice in order to figure out what your skills are, how to push past failure, and more, you’ll find anything is possible.Enjoy! Ep 793Menopause, Stress and Female Hair Loss – Dr. Sophia Kogan with Dave Asprey : 793

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Sophia Kogan is back on the show to share brand new research about women’s hair loss and thinning.Dr. Kogan is co-founder and Chief Medical Advisor at Nutrafol. The company creates supplements to decrease shedding and increase hair growth. Several of the products are designed specifically for women’s physiology. Her new study is important because women are about four times more susceptible to hair loss than men. Women not only have different hormonal pathways and factors that contribute to what they need for hair growth, but they also have phases in their lives, like menopause or pregnancy, that make them more susceptible to hair loss. “This is the first study that came out on women in menopause or who are going through hair thinning,” she says. Stress is another major factor that contributes to hair thinning and lossStress effects our hair throughout our entire lifetime, but during this past pandemic year, it’s been worse than ever. When we’re suffering from a bunch of stress (whether physical or emotional), the body pulls its resources to preserve its life internally, not hair growth.“During stress, hair follicles are synchronistically shifted, a huge number of them, into that resting phase,” Dr. Kogan explains. “So, the body says, ‘I want to pull the resources internally. I don't really need or care about hair. I want to preserve my life.’ And so it goes to the vital organs. That’s what happens to the hair growth cycle and it shifts and all of a sudden, we have a massive amount of hair shedding about three to six months later.”“Women go through a tremendous amount of stress in relationship to their hair, even more so than men because men sort of expect to thin,” Dr. Kogan says. She explains that the experience of hair loss for women often has a specific shame and guilt associated with it, too.We all experience stress differently, so it’s generally important to take time in your day for something that brings you into a flow state, says Dr. Kogan. “Each person is going to be really different, but they've got to feel a feeling of calmness because that's when you calm the nervous system,“ she says.Listen on to learn more about Dr. Kogan’s research, ways to manage your stress, and nutraceutical solutions for hair thinning and loss.Enjoy! Ep 792SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-6: New Fabric Tech Blocks EMFs from Your Body – Lambs : 792

Welcome to part 6 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes below for details! In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re talking about how you can protect yourself from EMFs (electromagnetic fields or radiation), with technology much more advanced than wrapping yourself in tinfoil. This is related to sexual energy in ways you might not expect. When I was writing “The Better Baby Book” more than a decade ago, I reviewed a lot of literature that looked at reproductive wellness and EMFs. It became very clear that you don't want to have EMFs near your ovaries or your testes if you want to have healthy kids. And the science has only become clearer since then. And even if having kids isn’t on your radar yet, protecting all of your private parts should be.Arthur Menard de Calenge started the Lambs clothing company–including underwear and t-shirts for men and women–to protect you from EMFs. There currently are more than 30,000 studies showing that EMFs, and especially microwaves, can have an adverse effect on your health. While EMFs can come from natural sources like sunlight, the kinds that impact us most come primarily from everyday exposure through our cellphones, TVs, radios and microwaves.“Instead of freaking out, we decided to create a solution and keep on living a normal life, a great life, not worrying about, ‘What are we going to die from?’” Arthur says.He and his team develop clothing items that are protective, as well as stylish, comfortable and, honestly, normal-looking. They make underwear and t-shirts that can protect ovaries, testes and breasts from EMFs, making this a crucial part of taking care of your sexual health and wellness. Using a mesh of metallic fibers that are too small for the wavelength of radiation present in EMFs to penetrate it, Lambs clothing blocks 99.2-99.9 percent of EMFs. Bye-bye tin-foil hats. Arthur and I discuss the dangers of EMFs on the body and how EMFs impact people on a cellular level. We also give some tips on how you can be mindful and avoid exposure.Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Ep 791SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-5: New Options for Women’s Sex Lives – Dr. Somi Javaid : 791

Welcome to part 5 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes below for details! In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking about female sexual wellness with Dr. Somi Javaid. She’s a leading obstetrician and gynecologist who’s been practicing for over 15 years. She’s considered to be a pioneer in the fields of menopause and sexual medicine treatment.Dr. Javaid founded a different healthcare clinic model just for women called HERmd in Cincinnati. With a suite of services and options, she aims to close the gender gap in healthcare and empower women to take control of their sexual health. She’s a fierce advocate for making sure women get the care and treatment that they need, and that shapes how she works. However, it’s rare and hard to find effective treatment for women’s sexual health in a healthcare system that often prioritizes the sexual needs and challenges of men. “Forty three percent of women struggle with sexual dysfunction, and it's like why is there such a stigma?” she says. “Why do we have two medications? Why are we continually ignoring and dismissing these women? It's a travesty. Imagine if there was any other condition that affected 43% of women or men. Would we ignore it the way we do this?”One area in particular is showing a lot of promise for women with low female libido, also referred to as hypoactive sexual desire disorder. “One out of every 10 women suffer from it at some point in their lifetime,” Dr. Javaid says. Since 2015, Addyi and Vyleesi have been FDA approved. Dr. Javaid is helping women normalize, talk about what’s going on with their sexual health, and find real solutions. She mentions new laser technology for tissue regeneration called the CO2RE Intima, vaginal health care, new contraceptive options, and how to handle the changes that come with perimenopause and menopause.Enjoy! Ep 790SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-4: Surprising Science About Human Desire – Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D. : 790

E

Welcome to part 4 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes below for details! In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., one of the leading experts on human sexuality and author of the popular blog “Sex and Psychology.” He’s been named one of 5 "Sexperts" You Need to Follow on Twitter by Men's Health and one of the "modern-day masters of sex" by Nerve. He’s also a social psychologist and Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute who’s published more than 50 academic works on topics like casual sex, sexual fantasy, sexual health, and friends with benefits. “Sexuality is so much more complex than we think that it is,” Justin says. “There's more fluidity than people might realize or like to believe.”His popular book, “Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life,” is based on the largest and most comprehensive scientific survey of Americans' sexual fantasies ever undertaken.“People tend to think that their fantasies are weird, abnormal, strange, or unusual,” Justin says. “No matter what their fantasy was, my participants underestimated how common that fantasy was. The rarer they thought it was, the more shame, guilt, embarrassment, anxiety they felt, and that's really what holds people back. They're worried about what other people will say or think, and they don't accept themselves for the interest that they have.”Justin studied the sexual fantasies of 4,175 Americans who came from all 50 states. They ranged in age from 18 to 87, come from very diverse backgrounds and completed his 369-question survey. His work helps us better understand the incredible diversity of human sexual desire. “I think so much of it is, we have this lack of education about what's normal when it comes to sex,” he continues. “That leads to the shame and that leads people to bottle everything up. Before you can get to that point of actually sharing your fantasy with a partner, there's some work that we need to do on ourselves to get that level of self-acceptance that's going to open the door to having productive and healthy conversations.”And there are a couple of apps for sexual fantasies that could help, too.  Enjoy! Ep 789SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-3: The Shock & Awe of Penis Evolution – Emily Willingham, Ph.D. : 789

E

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we’re taking a look at penises in the animal kingdom and the lessons we can learn from them. Some shocking. Some entertaining. This fascinating topic is based on the book, “Phallacy: Life Lessons from the Animal Penis,” by health, medical and science writer Emily Willingham, Ph.D. She’s also a research scientist specializing in the biological sciences. The richly illustrated “Phallacy” explores the historical and contemporary context of the penis and all the hype–and oddity–that surrounds it. In her book and in our interview, she answers a range of fun and serious questions about animal and human penises and their relationship to reproduction, pleasure and even power. “When you look at the animal kingdom, one of the lessons we learn is that it's not our most impressive organ,” Emily says. “It would be great for people to be able to relax a little bit about theirs, I think.”By breaking down the penis to its biological origins, Emily reminds us the penis wasn’t always a “worshipped obelisk of masculinity.” Rather, it’s a reproductive organ that many creatures have in all sorts of shapes and sizes One that has adapted and changed throughout our biological history. Enjoy! Ep 788SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-2: How to Boost Blood Flow for Better Erections – Launch Medical : 788

Welcome to part 2 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes below for details!Did you know that 40% of men notice problems with their erections even before their 40th birthday? In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest, Dustin Wolff, talks about a new at-home device that can put an end to those problems. Dustin, co-founder of Launch Medical, has been leading clinics that perform acoustic wave therapy (also called shockwave therapy) for years. This type of therapy helps men with penile performance issues. After treatments, which can include just a few times to several months, things work noticeably better than they did before. But not everyone who may need a boost is getting it.“It's still one of those things that is cost-prohibitive or there's the shame and embarrassment factor that guys might not want to come into a clinic like this and get these treatments done, because they're just nervous,” Dustin says. “Even in today's day and age, they're too embarrassed or they're too ashamed to come in, even if they can afford it.”So Launch Medical spent several years developing an FDA-compliant, patent-pending acoustic wave therapy device that men can use at home. This device, called the Rocket, is both convenient and affordable.Men’s penile performance often declines because of micro-plaque build up in blood vessels, leading to eventual collapse and weakening. It’s a condition that happens to every man with age. Acoustic wave therapy clears the micro-plaque out of the blood vessels and creates microtrauma, which fosters the growth of new blood vessels. The acoustic wave treatments can lead to firmer erections, shorter refractory time between sexual intercourse sessions, increasing the intensity of the orgasm and more. At-home use of Phoenix takes about six to 12 treatments to experience results. And for those of you who may be tempted to speed up results with more use, there’s a built-in lockout feature so you can’t overuse it (and your cells and tissue get a chance to repair fully). After a full round of treatments, you use the device only when you need it. Dustin wants to make sure the men he works with truly start feeling better. When men see more blood flow happening, with a size increase, he sees their confidence come back, performance anxiety go away, and psychologically they start feeling better. “I say this for every guy,” Dustin says. “If you have a penis, there's no reason why you shouldn't try this, because as you know, there are no side effects and there's no downtime, and it can just make things that much better.”Enjoy! Ep 787SEXUAL ENERGY SERIES-1: From Holistic Sex to Vaginal Kung Fu – Kim Anami : 787

E

Welcome to part 1 (of 6) of our Bulletproof Radio Sexual Energy Series! We’re bringing you lots of new information about sexual health, wellness, research, devices, and performance. We’re combining that with special offers, discounts and all kinds of resources on the Dave Asprey blog. Be sure to scan the show notes on the episode #787 web page for details!Kim Anami can read someone’s sexual energy as soon as they walk in the room. In this episode, she shares how you can best access, dive into and embody your own sexual energy (and how it will transform your life). As a holistic sex and relationship coach, Kim approaches and opens our minds to sex in both the physical realm and beyond. She runs her own online sex and relationships school, where she talks about the importance of doing the work to further connect ourselves with ourselves and our partners.“That's really what my work is trying to gear people toward is having these life-changing, cataclysmic therapeutic, deep, powerful, even, psychedelic type experiences that really change your life,” Kim says. She opens up the practice of sex beyond the definitions you may see and hear in popular culture into an energetic source. Recirculating your sexual energy through deep breathing work lets you move the sexual energy in the body to where it needs to be for healing and rejuvenation. By impeding the natural flow of that energy through your body, you’re preventing yourself from having the sexual experiences, physical or spiritual, that may have before seemed impossible. “The big barometric question that I asked people is, "Does that leave you feeling energized, revitalized, transformed, and has it changed your life?" Kim asks. In this episode, you’ll also learn how accessing your sexual self-knowledge and awareness is tied to feminine and masculine energy, hormonal birth control, vaginal strength and greater power, and creativity. “It's because this has the power to really rebirth, right? This is the procreative energy of the universe that we literally have at our fingertips. Every single one of us.”Kim will teach you how to build up your own strength in so many ways, from your pelvic floor to your breathing to your emotional well-being. This leads to increased connection, intimacy, energy and creativity in your sexual relationships.Listen on to become more informed and empowered about sex.LEARN MORE! VAGINAL KUNG FU SALONVaginal Kung Fu is the ancient art of vaginal strengthening and the cultivation of sexual power, pioneered by Kim Anami. She takes Taoist and Tantric practices and combines them with cutting-edge modern science and metaphysical studies to obtain quantum-leap and life-changing results. Ep 786Triggered Much? How to Avoid Extremes and Find Your Middle Ground – Sam Qurashi with Dave Asprey : 786

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Sam Qurashi, a self-professed “unorthodox psychologist” who walked away from a psychiatric residency at an addiction hospital because he wanted to help people in a different way. He’s actively working to change people’s interactions with the external world.Sam’s now a writer and entrepreneur with a following of more than 700K (and rapidly growing) on Instagram. He shares thoughts, concepts and questions we can ask ourselves to interrupt the psychological patterns that keep us trapped in mental loops of our own design. “The best way to trigger a change is to create an interruption, but how do you create an interruption that does not cause stress?” he asks. “How do you create an interruption that is gentle, that is a way to get people to reflect?” His framework for growth and change requires that we question ourselves and consider a model of learning he’s developed called liminalism. He looked at the common approaches people have about learning and living in the extremes and realized how little they actually benefit our personal reality or truth. “A lot of people live in extremes,” Sam says. “If you live in an extreme, you're limited automatically.”“What lives between black and white is not gray,” he explains. “It's literally the entire color spectrum. Balance, focus, flexibility, options, choice–that lives in the middle ground.”He learned how to change his own perceptions of the world by interviewing experts that live beyond the frame of traditional psychology. Our discussion explores the interesting lessons Sam learned from a pickpocket, hypnotist, cold reader, tea master, horse whisperer and others. One of the things that had him curious was how they viewed fear.“Fear lives in the future,” Sam says. “The future doesn't exist but fear just visited me in the present moment. So, if I jump, I'm actually racing fear into the future. If I get there first, I'm obliterating the fear.” Listen on to find out how you can avoid extremes in your life, find your personal middle ground, and face your fears.Enjoy! Ep 785Finding Pleasure in Fasting, Sex and Spirituality – Nadia Bolz-Weber with Dave Asprey : 785

E

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Lutheran Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber shares her relationship with religion that’s refreshingly frank.Nadia, a former addict and stand-up comedian, founded the House for All Sinners & Saints church in Denver, Colorado, in 2008. She led the congregation for a decade, then retired from church leadership to continue her work as a public theologian. She’s also the author of three New York Times bestselling books in which she considers the nature of sex, pleasure, spirituality–and even shame. She explores and embraces a pretty expansive worldview. I find her fascinating–from her “Sarcastic Lutheran” social handles to "The Confessional" podcast she hosts–and wanted to get her unique perspective on fasting, lack and going without. On Fasting: “My own profound experience of fasting actually isn’t part of the Christian tradition,” Nadia explains. “It's just 48 hours of prayer and fasting, and I'm outside on the ridge of this mountain, not a mountain, but the hills. With just a bedroll. For two days. I stay in one spot. Being a New York Times bestselling author does jack shit for you.”On the Body: “It's baffling to me that Christianity became such a body hating, pleasure-hating religion, when the whole story behind Christianity is, God decided to have a human body,” she says. “And then we say they're evil if we actually believe God decided out of all things to slip into skin and walk among us. It's just crazy to me.”On Sex: “I was walking down the street in London, all this stuff is swirling in my head, and I was just like so amazed by how good it was for me to be having sex again,” she says. “And then I thought, “Why did the church make me sign a paper saying I wouldn't do this. How is it better for my church if I'm not getting laid?” That makes no sense whatsoever.” In her most recent book, “Shameless: A Sexual Reformation: A Case for Not Feeling Bad About Feeling Good (About Sex)“ she writes about the complicated relationship people have with sex and pleasure, and Christianity’s often distorted reality of that.Listen on to our conversation and to learn how to sift through life’s mixed messages about faith and pleasure to find what brings you personal meaning.Enjoy! Ep 784Five Motivators That Fuel Peak Performance – Steven Kotler with Dave Asprey : 784

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Steven Kotler believes there’s a formula for the impossible and that the answer lies in our biology. He’s spent a lifetime researching and looking for ways to achieve his own peak performance, and today we get his advice on how you can achieve yours. In Steven’s newest book, “The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer” he’s combined neuroscience and decades of research to make a playbook for extreme performance improvement and an exploration of the frontiers of human possibility. He lays out four components to maintaining peak performance: motivation, learning, creativity and flow. He’s a New York Times-bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes. He’s also the executive director of the Flow Research Collective, an institute that researches the neuroscience of flow states and trains individuals to harness their own flow-state, so they can achieve more, faster.“One of the qualities of a flow state is this quality of effortless effort,” Steven says. “Bottom-up attention is really what it is instead of top-down attention. It's happening automatically.”While you can’t live in the flow state, we talk about how you can maximize your time in that state and stay in touch with your motivation.“When you talk about intrinsic drive, you're really talking about curiosity, passion, purpose, autonomy, and mastery,” Steven says. “Those five are our big five intrinsic motivators.”Once you have those five things, he explains how it becomes easier to begin setting goals and finding ways to constantly tune into your willpower in order to make them a reality.“Sometimes in peak performance you’ve got to go slow to go fast,” Steven says. “Learning to turn curiosity into passion and passion into purpose. This is one of those places where you got to go slow. Because once you get it right, these are three huge intrinsic motivators. If they're pointing in the same direction, it unlocks a tremendous amount.”Oh, and then we also talk about the time he flew a MIG-17 Russian fighter jet — without knowing how to fly. Steven has lived an incredible life and has a ton of great knowledge, experience and insight to share. Ep 783Inflammation’s Ties to Fasting, Cancer and Covid – Dr. Miriam Merad with Dave Asprey : 783

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the focus is on inflammation and how it’s related to fasting, cancer and even Covid. If you want to know how your immune system works, Dr. Miriam Merad most definitely is the expert to ask. So I did. She’s an internationally acclaimed physician scientist who’s doing groundbreaking research on how our immune system fights common and recurring infections. Dr. Merad leads the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine (PrIISM) at Mount Sinai, New York. Her research lab recently found that fasting reduces inflammation and improves chronic inflammatory diseases without affecting the immune system’s response to acute infections. However, our immune systems respond differently to stressors like fasting, diets and levels of activity. “We are not all equal,” says Dr. Merad. “So, we have to really understand that it’s important to stratify people, and this stratification comes from teamwork with computational and quantitative immunologies and quantitative biologies. Some ethnic groups have different type of gene organization, that we can now identify, and sometimes it’s spontaneous mutation.”We also get into Dr. Merad’s recent findings on COVID-19 (why some patients develop severe forms of the virus and some don’t) and her research on cancer immunology. Her findings are fascinating, and she’s an engaging guest. Her research helps us better understand human immunology, a topic she’s always been captivated by.“We, as a human species, are alive today because we were able to survive millions of years of exposure to threats,” Dr. Merad says. The only reason we were able to survive is because our immune system protected us. “It is our best doctor.“I appreciate her holistic approach to her practice and her research, and I really think you’ll find something in here that inspires you.Enjoy! E

In Dave Asprey’s brand new book, “Fast This Way: Burn Fat, Heal Inflammation, and Eat Like the High-Performing Human You Were Meant to Be,” he asks you to throw out the rules you think you know about fasting. He shows you how to do it easily without facing down cravings and shows how you can radically reframe your relationship with food to seriously upgrade our health. This means simply conquering your fear of going without. “This is the most accessible book I've written,” Dave says. “There's plenty of science in there, but it's also like here's step one, here's step two.”In this unique episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dave steps out of the hosting seat and hands the podcast mic to Lara Logan to ask the questions. Lara’s been a journalist and war correspondent for nearly three decades. Ep 781New Research Says Fasting Beats Cutting Calories – Leonie Heilbronn, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 781

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m joined by Australian researcher Leonie Heilbronn, Ph.D.. Her fasting research looks at the biological pathways that support reducing the risk of chronic diseases.Leonie leads the Obesity and Metabolism group based within the Lifelong Health Theme at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute at Adelaide University in Adelaide, Australia. Today, I have her on to talk about her studies on fasting, many of which show more specific results than what we’ve seen in this field before. She looks at intermittent fasting, time restricted eating, calorie restriction and more. In a particular study on women, Leoni says, “We did see that the intermittent fasting group lost a little bit more weight than the caloric restriction group, and they had better improvements in their health.” There were other positive results like reductions in diabetes and cardiovascular risk markers. Fasting isn’t one-size-fits-all, so I asked Leonie a lot of questions about her research, such as:How does the food you eat during intermittent fasting affect the fast itself? What food works for some people and not others and how does that influence the effectiveness of your fast? How do intermittent fasting and caloric restriction compare? When should you eat your daily protein and carbs? Should you consume black coffee during your fast? How does time-restrictive eating affect your lifespan? How do people respond in fasting studies? “For some people, it takes them a little while to get used to fasting and then some people just maybe never get used to it,” she says. How do people respond in time restrictive eating studies? “I think time restrictive eating is great because you don’t really have to change everything that you’re eating and you’re still going to have some really good effects,” she says. “But I think if you started to have bad behaviors because of time pressure, then you’re not going to see the improvement that we’d hope to see.”Leonie breaks down her research in in simple terms, so no matter what your familiarity with fasting might be, you’ll find a fascinating entry point. Enjoy! Ep 780What’s Up with Water Fasting? – Dr. Alan Goldhamer with Dave Asprey : 780

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m joined by Dr. Alan Goldhamer, one of the world’s leading experts on medically supervised, water-only fasting. He’s supervised the fasting and care of more than 20,000 patients at TrueNorth Health Center in Santa Rosa, California, since he founded it in 1984.His mission is to expand evidence-based knowledge of how medically supervised, water-only fasting and diet impact human health; train clinicians in the use of these interventions; and share findings with researchers and the public.“We know using this protocol, this process can be done safely,” he says. “We’ve actually published a fasting safety study–the first fasting safety study that's been published in a peer-reviewed journal–that involved tracking all the patients for five years, and all of the symptoms, and classifying them according to the CTCAE criteria, the adverse events criteria on hundreds of patients.”A few things you may not know about water fasting:Your Body Self-Cleans: “The body does a really good job of regulating and recycling and restoring electrolyte balance during water-only fasting,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “And as soon as you start supplementing, then it puts increased load on other nutrients, it gets complicated, and there's no good long term safety criteria using supplemented fasting.”Your Gut Heals: “What we see clinically is that these patients with microbial imbalances tend to improve dramatically,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “We do really well in treating conditions ranging from ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, to the dysbiosis and chronic constipation, and more.”Your Inflammation Decreases: “There's a powerful anti-inflammatory effect to fasting,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “All the acute phase reactive proteins, high sensitivity CRP, fibrinogen, pepsinogen, whatever you want to measure, tends to consistent and predictably go down during fasting. So the gut leakage appears to be able to heal.”Our discussion covers research behind water fasting, what health conditions it may benefit and what happens during a water fast. We also get into a lot more information about health.“There's a lot in common between whether it's intermittent fasting changes, water fasting changes, exercise, and all of these attempts to reduce dietary excess,” Dr. Goldhamer says. “All of them are essentially trying to reduce inflammation, get rid of gut leakage, and give the body a chance to heal itself from the consequences of a highly processed food diet, whether it's processed animal foods or processed plant-based foods.”Enjoy! Ep 779Women, Fasting, Keto & Cancer – Amy Robach with Dave Asprey : 779

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with well-known journalist Amy Robach, who’s covered major national and global news events and people over the past 20 years. Her most important story, however, came when she had an on-air mammogram at age 40 and was shockingly diagnosed with breast cancer. We go into her lifestyle since the diagnosis, which has radically changed, and now is based in keto and intermittent fasting.Amy got an on-air mammogram to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month for a special news program in September 2013. She was 40, had never had a mammogram before and had no family history of breast cancer. Two years later, Amy wrote a memoir about the experience: “Better: How I Let Go of Control, Held On To Hope, and Found Joy in My Darkest Hour.” The whole notion of the book, she says, is to “take that fear and have it be that wake-up call, for you to live better.”"What am I going to do with this fear?,” Amy asked herself. “Am I going to let it cripple me or am I going to let it motivate me, A, to live better, and B, to do everything I can to be as healthy and as strong and as fit as possible if I get that bad news one of these days?"When she was first diagnosed she felt crippled by that fear. In the beginning, she felt weak and sorry for herself, not even able to trust her own body. But over time, she found the energy she needed. She changed every part of her life: Food, fitness, family, and her attitude. She went on Keto and started intermittent fasting. She doesn’t sweat the small stuff anymore. “If everything had gone great and I had not gotten cancer, I know I wouldn't be who I am today from a physical standpoint, from a mental standpoint, from a spiritual standpoint,” she says.Amy and I get into how she balances an incredibly demanding career, a blended family and her wellness—and how keto and intermittent fasting help her do it. In pretty remarkable ways. “I remember especially when I started doing keto and intermittent fasting, seeing my brain come back to me was everything, everything,” Amy says. Her mom and dad (in their 60s) even got on board to support her and made remarkable changes in their own health. Check out her mom’s website for a ton of recipes: https://myketohome.com.She has set up her life in a beautiful way, and has wisdom, energy and advice for anyone just trying to make a change in their own life. “It was freedom,” Amy says. “That was one of my favorite unexpected joys from fasting and keto.”Enjoy! Ep 778Bad Science and Diet Lies Keep Feeding Obesity: Gary Taubes with Dave Asprey : 778

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Gary Taubes, an award-winning (and my all-time favorite) scienceand health journalist widely known for his investigative work on the food and diet industries. He explains how the conventional thinking on obesity has led to 60 years of controversy, the on-going “diet wars,” and the current obesity and diabetes epidemics. You may know his previous book, “The Case Against Sugar,” which exposed the harsh dangers of sugar in our diets. He’s on this episode with his new book, “The Case For Keto.” “The nutritional and academic authorities have failed us, and they and we should acknowledge that,” he says. “Had they not failed us, we would, almost by definition, never have reached this point of epidemic obesity.”Decades of bad science within the mainstream medical community led to all sorts of bad advice from doctors on how patients should diet and manage their overall nutrition. In this episode we talk about the decades of those misconceptions:How authorities from the 1820s onward, and clinical trials from the 1930s onward, reported that people with obesity could lose weight “as if by magic” if they just abstained from carbohydrates and replaced those calories with fat.How the fat shaming so prevalent in our society stems directly from the conventional thinking on obesity, that we get fat because we consume more calories than we expend, that we overeat. Why trying to lose weight by eating less and exercising more—trying to create and maintain a calorie deficit—will make us hungry, but not lean. Why tens of thousands of physicians worldwide have taken, specifically, to eating ketogenic diets—"keto,” very low in carbohydrates, high in fat—and why they now prescribe this way of eating to their patients.“People do fad diets, because the conventional wisdom doesn't work,” Gary says. “You do exactly what you're told to do and all it does is keep you fat and make you hungry. You feel bad about yourself because you blame yourself for failing. Any reasonable person in that circumstance is going to look for another approach.”So, how can we move forward on a better path? I’m so excited for you to listen and find out.Gary’s work is some of the best at breaking everything down in order to reveal the truth. And in this case, you’ll learn from him how he found out that a low-carb/high-fat diet makes you healthier, controls blood sugar and blood pressure, diminishes chronic pain, reduces weight, and improves heart disease risk. Ep 777When Mother Nature Says, ‘I’m Out,’ Geoengineering Hacks Will Fix Our Planet: Thomas Kostigen with Dave Asprey : 777

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I talk with Thomas Kostigen about how there’s no returning to nature as we knew it. His current work focuses on climate disaster and emergency preparedness. And to write his newest book, “Hacking Planet Earth: How Geoengineering Can Help Us Reimagine the Future”, Thomas went to the frontlines of geoengineering projects that scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers, and other visionaries around the world are developing to solve the problems associated with global warming. “My book is based in rigorous science and all the methodologies that are in it are backed by serious scientists who have certain solutions,” Thomas said. “Geoengineering is controversial by its very nature, by certain segments, not only of the environmental movement but others.”A New York Times bestselling author, award-winning National Geographic writer, activist and journalist, Thomas has reported from war zones to the world's wonders across five continents. He’s now looking at what space and the future may hold. A space umbrella? Laser lightning rod? Lotus tower? Ice Stupa? Ever heard of these? Well, they might be the next tools and technologies we use to fix our planet.“We have to shift the conversation from what's far out there to what's reasonable, and what can we do in the here and the now,” he says. “We have to deal with what's in front of us today, but we also have to look at it as a learning mechanism for tomorrow.”In “Hacking Planet Earth,” Thomas examines the furthest out-there and most forward-thinking fixes for our climate that go beyond carbon emission and waste mitigation.“Fate cannot be left to chance any longer," he says. …" It is time to turn our collective attention toward supporting industry and encouraging the business community, scientists and technologists—innovators!—to step up and do what they do best: invent, pioneer, disrupt the same old ways of doing things.”Our discussion dives into geoengineering and other technologies that could protect our planet. Thomas also talks about the importance of using today’s virtual modeling technology to inform those solutions, and their consequences. These futurist, world-changing ideas will save us, he says. On today’s show, we’ll learn why he thinks so."Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" efforts aren't enough anymore,” Thomas says. “These individual efforts are a necessary part of the fight against climate change, but it’s time to think bigger—much bigger.”Enjoy! Ep 776Censorship Costs Lives: Brian Rose Keeps it Real in London with Dave Asprey : 776

This episode of Bulletproof Radio is a little different. I’m featuring Brian Rose, the founder, CEO and host of the wildly popular London Real podcast, livestream platform, TV show and multi-media company. He’s a great friend, longtime supporter and the current frontrunner in London’s political race for mayor. Brian left a career in banking that spanned Chicago, New York and London to start the London Real podcast in 2011. He wanted to broadcast content he couldn’t find in the mainstream media. His aim was to have real conversations with real people, so his show featured guests that could come on and speak in unscripted, unedited and uncensored ways. “I do not agree with everything you say,” he proclaims, “but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”With that mindset, he’s created a multi-media business reaching billions (yes, billions) of people around the globe.“And then 2020 came,” Brian says. “And there was a lot of fear out there. And people didn't know who to trust and people weren't trusting the mainstream media. They weren't trusting the governments. And so we decided to start having voices on that might offer some alternative opinions.” In April, one of the YouTube London Real episodes was deleted and banned without notice because “it violated their community guidelines.” After nine years on a channel with half a billion views, Brian realized just how heavily censorship limited the content he could create.“I soon realized that censorship was real,” Brian says. “We got censored on Facebook, on Instagram, I got kicked off of LinkedIn, my TED Talk disappeared off their channel for about a week, PayPal, Vimeo pulled my videos, Dropbox pulled my account.” So, he took action and created his own livestream platform, raising a million dollars in 11 days for what’s now called the Digital Freedom Platform. There, he’s interviewed Nobel Prize winners, scientists, doctors, nurses, professors emeritus from MIT, four star generals and more. But that’s not all. He wants to make change on an even more massive scale, so he’s running to be mayor of Londonas an independent candidate. Through his Transform London 2021 plan executed with strong leadership, he believes he can make London a world-class capital city once again and one of the most desirable places in the world to live, work and visit.“Our mission statement on the wall [at London Real] is to create a mass scale transformation of humanity into a fully empowered conscious and cooperative species,” says Brian. “But being mayor of London is the way I could really, really do that. So, it's exciting. It's scary. It's nerve wracking, it's uncomfortable, but I love it.”I can’t wait for you to hear this episode, where Brian and I talk about censorship, current events, and his larger plans for transforming London.  Enjoy! Ep 775You’re Actually Not a Badass and Here’s Why – Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 775

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest, Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., is a humanistic psychologist exploring the depths of human potential. We go way beyond basic needs and discuss how to get close to transcendence. Hint: you get to change (or even drop) the story you tell about yourself. It’s one of the hard parts of self-actualization, but worth it to move your life forward. When Scott discovered Abraham Maslow's unfinished theory of transcendence through unpublished journals, lectures and essays, he felt a deep connection to his own work. Maslow is most famous for his theory on the hierarchy of needs “We can harness [Maslow’s theory of] transcendence in our lives and we can be motivated by what he called the B values, the values of pure being, the values in life that you don't engage with and you're not one with because you want something else,” Scott says.Scott’s curiosity led him to finish Maslow’s theory and update it with seven decades of new science that’s been discovered since. The result is Scott’s new book, “Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization.”I took Scott’s free self-actualization test, and we explore my results in today’s discussion. Scott has great insights about how to approach vulnerability with yourself and others, self-awareness, attachment and other critical pieces of human growth and personal development. “A lot of people don't realize that they can actually divorce their mind and have a lot more psychological free will,” he says. “Sometimes I think it's an act of craziness to exert it.”Scott unravels the mysteries of Maslow’s unfinished theory and integrates these ideas with the latest research on connection, creativity, love, purpose and other building blocks of a life well lived, and gives science-backed suggestions, including:Fight familiarization and seek fresh experiences. Periodically get away from time-and-space concerns. Get out of the “deficiency realm” by deliberately going to the “being realm.” “These aren't necessarily things that are going to make you happy,” Scott says. “Again, we're going through the difference between happiness and growth, but they're things that will help you grow. They really will. They'll help you get outside your comfort zone.”Scott has been named one of "50 Groundbreaking Scientists who are changing the way we see the world" by Business Insider. He’s hosted “The Psychology Podcast” since 2014 and wrote the popular “Beautiful Minds” blog for Scientific American for close to a decade. Enjoy! Ep 773Trigger Autophagy Without Fasting – Dr. Elizabeth Yurth Talks Spermidine with Dave Asprey : 773

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Dr. Elizabeth Yurth explains how spermidine, a substance found in the human body and almost all plants and animals, can slow down the cellular aging process and influence your overall health.“Where we see spermidine work is at a very, very base level to correct the autophagy to get rid of those bad mitochondria so that now we're not being overwhelmed by reactive oxygen species,” Dr. Yurth says. “We actually will start to recycle the bad parts of the cell and start with a new cell at that point.” Dr. Yurth is medical director/chief medical officer at Boulder Longevity Institute, and a partner with Longevity Labs+, the company that’s been pioneering spermidine research for the last decade and focuses their research on the improvement of aging. So what does spermidine do? Most importantly, it regulates a cell renewal process called autophagy, one of the most touted benefits of fasting.Spermidine helps you take control of the aging process.SpermidineLIFE® is the first naturally extracted and clinically tested dietary supplement to promote cellular renewal after multiple studies, trials and 10 years of research.People in clinical trials reported better memory, better sleep, more energy, reduced brain fog, improved skin and hair, and more. “Spermidine’s working on so many pathways to reduce reactive oxygen species, to improve the immune health, and to reduce the inflammatory cytokines that we know are initiated in these disease processes,” Dr. Yurth says.Spermidine is an important part of the body’s cellular processes that:Support healthy cell agingHave preventive effects on age-related diseasesIncrease life expectancy and liver protectionPromote healthy weightNormalize bone densityReduce age-dependent muscular atrophyEnhance growth of hair, skin, and nails“Every single species, every one-cell organism. Everybody has this, so we know it’s critical to life," Dr. Yurth says. "We absolutely know it’s critical to life.”Enjoy! Ep 772How to Get Fitter Cells, Stronger Muscles and a Longer Life – Timeline Nutrition with Dave Asprey : 772

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’ve invited two experts who know a lot about plants and how plants interact with our cell biology. We discuss the exciting new discovery of a molecule called Urolithin A that’s a breakthrough in mitochondrial health. Urolithin A promotes mitochondrial function, muscle strength and longevity. Navindra Seeram, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Rhode Island and is one of the most highly cited scientists in Agricultural Sciences. With a background in cell and molecular biology, biomedical engineering and engineering, Chris Rinsch, Ph.D., has been immersed in the biotech and life sciences industry for more than two decades. Our conversation centers on Mitopure™, the first clinically tested Urolithin A available through Timeline Nutrition. One of the most important things Urolithin A does is revitalize the energy factories inside our cells. Each of our cells contain mitochondria, and the cell has an innate process of cleaning up the damaged mitochondria and recycling them. This process is called mitophagy. Urolithin A supports cellular health by stimulating mitophagy to keep cells fit and running efficiently.“It's really important to keep your mitochondria at its peak performance,” Chris says, “no matter what your general health conditions are.”Urolithin A is generated by the gut microflora as a natural food metabolite of ellagitannins, a class of compounds found in the pomegranate and other fruits, nuts and tea. Their studies have shown some pretty amazing results.“We saw that when we started incubating and feeding worms with Urolithin A they were increasing their lifespan by about 50 percent,” Chris says. “And when the studies moved to mice, they ran 40 percent further and longer after taking the Urolithin A.”Listen on to find out more about how Urolithin A is such a breakthrough for mitochondrial health and how it’s a game changer for cellular nutrition.Enjoy! Ep 771Control Stress and Regulate Your Nervous System in 5 Steps – Lisa Wimberger with Dave Asprey : 771

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest Lisa Wimberger was struck by lightning at age 15 and lived. That lightning strike set in motion a grand mal seizure disorder that she lived with for the next two decades and ultimately influenced her life’s work with neuroplasticity. The seizures became life threatening, but that condition inspired her to find ways to protect and rebuild her body and mind. She went on to explore neuroplasticity, a process that helped her to disrupt her seizures.“There's a seizure halo from stress and maladaptive vagal tone and then there's a seizure. Well, there's a gap in space and time between those two things and it might be a fraction a second, but that is a response pattern that I've gotten really good at. Neuroplasticity says I can change those things. It doesn't tell me how exactly, but I'm going to figure it out. I had all of this meditation that I was not using for my well-being, and then all of the science, and I just backwards engineered.”The most profound insight she learned was that the way she was meditating was actually harmful to her. “When you hear the word meditation, it's not one size fits all,” Lisa says. “There's all different kinds and you have to know what works for your body.” Lisa founded the NeuroSculpting® Institute in Colorado, where she teaches people and organizations who suffer from stress disorders, including law enforcement teams. She created NeuroSculpting®, a 5-step meditation process that can help an individual release the grip of old patterns and entrain their brain to creating new and more supportive patterns, habits and behaviors. “The benefits are you still get to hack into your nervous system, and you get to file down the sharp edges of any thought that might have triggered you into arousal at any point in time, or you can create brand new thoughts,” she says. “Neuroplasticity doesn't care if it's an experience you've never had or an experience you've had. It only cares that you're programming it with buy-in, and it's going to store that in your mind as a pattern.”Lisa earned a master’s degree in Education, a Foundations Certification in NeuroLeadership, and certificates in medical neuroscience, visual perception, and the brain, and neurobiology. She’s written numerous books on neuroplasticity and stress management, including Neurosculpting: A Whole-Brain Approach to Heal Trauma, Rewrite Limiting Beliefs, and Find Wholeness and New Beliefs, New Brain: Free Yourself from Stress and Fear. She’s also co-creator of a digital app made up of interactive NeuroSculpting® modules that shift brain neuroplasticity and support well-being, called NeuroPraxis. This unique app helps people re-pattern trauma and nervous system suffering through guided meditation.Listen today as we talk about Lisa’s discoveries in brain entrainment, stress management and meditation practices that do no harm.Enjoy! Ep 770Your Guide to Psychedelic Psychotherapy – Dr. Phil Wolfson with Dave Asprey : 770

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Phil Wolfson, the creator of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. He shares his vast knowledge about the benefits of ketamine, and other healing chemicals like mushrooms or MDMA, as a treatment for depression, PTSD, addiction and other conditions. Dr. Wolfson leads patients through psychedelic psychotherapy sessions, guiding them through their past and present in an open, altered state of mind.Dr. Wolfson is a specialist in psychedelic psychotherapy, a practicing Buddhist, and a “psychonaut.” His invaluable work is the result of an intense, many-decades-long clinical psychiatry/psychotherapy practice that focuses on new pathways for healing.“There's really no right or wrong with psychedelics,” Dr. Wolfson says. “They have special properties. People go through either a low dose or moderate to high dose experience. That experience is separated from your life here. And then the real work is the integration as people come back, [asking] How am I different? What have I learned from this?”For example, in the first hour of mushrooms or psilocybin, you're going to go through a psychological scrape, he says. “All the misdeeds, and things you owe to people, and how you've been hurt or hurt others.”“It's about how do we integrate our lives and relationship in this very difficult time with people and in our beings, and what practices we bring to this whole thing. So, it's not just about substances.”“We use our medicines in a sacred way,” Dr. Wolfson says. “We're not doing traditional medicine; we're not doing intravenous anesthesiology practices. We bring people in, we do invocation. We help people move into a state of contemplation before we do substances.”He’s also the CEO of the non-profit Ketamine Research Foundation, the director of the Center for Transformational Psychotherapy and a founding member of the Heffter Research Institute (HRI), a non-profit scientific organization. HRI has been helping design, review and fund the leading studies on psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms) at research institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Wolfson leads the newly founded Indra’s Net Coalition, which brings people around the world together in the midst of crisis for healing, self-expression and connection.“Indrasnetcoalition.org is a worldwide universal concept about connection,” he says. “It's about forming a network that is exists because we're all connected.” Enjoy! In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I dive into an intriguing discussion about trauma with my guest, Rachel Yehuda, Ph.D. We touch on what her latest research is uncovering about the role epigenetics plays in trauma and how to identify signs of trauma in your own life. “Trauma affects everybody,” Rachel says. “Having a traumatic event will definitely change you in some way in terms of how you view the world.”RRachel is a professor and vice-chair of Psychiatry and professor of Neuroscience at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Her work focuses on the fields of psychology, trauma, and epigenetic research. She has authored more than 300 high-cited journal articles and book chapters and developed fascinating insights about risk and resilience. Her research on cortisol and brain function has revolutionized the understanding and treatment of PTSD worldwide. With her in-depth knowledge of PTSD and epigenetics, Rachel walks us through how our parents' traumas can be passed down through the generations and how those triggers that you're working on today may not have originated in your lifetime. "It's not just that you carry the genes of your parents,” Rachel says. “You carry their history. You carry a lot of the sum total of their experiences."We also discuss:The often misunderstood role that cortisol plays in the stress response and how this "stress-hormone" may be better identified as an anti-stress hormone. How previously banned drugs like MDMA, DMT, and psilocybin may hold therapeutic potential for people working through traumas, and the road ahead for research into these drugs. The importance of finding the right practitioner to work with you on traumas that you may experience or have emerge in your life. Enjoy! Ep 768New Solutions for the Growing Food Allergy Epidemic – Dr. Kari Nadeau with Dave Asprey : 768

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we take a look at how and why food allergies affect so many of us. Conquering mine has helped me immensely on my Bulletproof journey and I want to share a conversation that could help you do the same.Dr. Kari Nadeau is considered one of the world’s leading experts on food allergy, and is the author of the new book “"The End of Food Allergy, featuring Immunotherapy: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse a 21st-Century Epidemic". For more than 30 years she’s focused her expertise on the environmental and genetic factors that affect the risk of developing allergies and asthma, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the diseases. Allergies play a growing role in every part of our lives. They happen because of the products we put on our skin, the foods we eat every single day, and the products we use in our home and work environment. Dr. Nadeau offers ways to spot the allergens all around you.“We have the science,” Dr. Nadeau says. “We should do better and make people's quality of life better in general: on the therapy side, on the convention side, as well as on the diagnostic side.”Here are some quick allergy facts:One in three Americans has some form of allergies. It is estimated that one in 20 adults in America (5%) has a food allergy and 1 in 13 children in the U.S. suffers from food allergy The rate of people with food allergies is doubling approximately every 10 years. Adults with food allergies have a 65% chance of passing those allergies to their children. 90% of food allergies are caused by the following 8 allergenic foods: cow’s milk, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, egg. “If you don't treat your body well within any given year, you might develop a food allergy,” Dr. Nadeau says. “You've got to take care of yourself because any one person can develop a food allergy newly, even if they didn't have an allergy before. This is a growing epidemic; it's just not a US-based disease anymore. It's growing around the world.” In the midst of a growing epidemic, Dr. Nadeau shares information about a potential upcoming treatment process that could help you find out what your allergies are, manage them if you already have them and potentially end them.Listen on to find out the differences between food sensitivities and allergies, thresholds for bodily stress, and ways we can both cure and prevent asthma and allergies. Dr. Nadeau answers all these questions and much more.Enjoy! And get more resources at https://blog.daveasprey.com/category/podcasts/WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ep 767How Hacking Your Gut Bacteria Can Regulate Your Blood Sugar – Colleen Cutcliffe, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey : 767

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Colleen Cutcliffe, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Pendulum Therapeutics. We explore exciting new discoveries in the body’s gut microbiome and discuss how Pendulum is disrupting what we know about probiotics.Pendulum uses biological and computational insights into the microbiome to develop solutions for health and disease conditions. “Rather than calling a disease by what the symptoms are, we are actually looking at the microbiome as an underlying infrastructure within our body,” Colleen says. Pendulum also identifies and isolates new bacterial strains, then combines those new strains to create unique probiotics. These are backed by clinical research studies. Using this discovery platform, Pendulum created the world’s first microbiome intervention for people with Type 2 Diabetes. “Managing your blood sugar is at the core of so many health issues, including your immune system,” Colleen says. “You really are more vulnerable and susceptible when you're not managing your blood sugars properly.”In Pendulum’s clinical testing, they found out some interesting things.“We have people with type 2 diabetes on multiple drugs,” Colleen says. “We have people with pre-diabetes who are looking to avoid crossing over into taking drugs. And we've had people who are healthy that are really concerned about “how is my body metabolizing sugar and fibers.” And so we offer free A1c testing, actually at baseline, and then three months in so that people can see their results. And I think that really helps people kind of believe the results that they're experiencing.”Our conversation goes in a lot of directions related to the science of gut health–both your inner environment and the one around you. We’re learning so much, so fast, that science is seeing all sorts of connections. The gut microbiome is the frontier of how we’ll define better health.“Where we're heading is understanding that the microbiome is foundational in a lot of things like the immune response, allergies, digestion, metabolism, and that once you start to make sure that you have the right flora and all the right plants in your garden, you're actually going to be tackling a lot of these different things,” Colleen says. “And so, you won't have to have a specific thing for every disease because I think we're going to transform the way we think about disease.”Enjoy! Ep 766Better Gut Health Using Oxygen and Iodine – Dr. Edward Group with Dave Asprey : 766

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Dr. Edward Group, founder of the Global Healing Center. We talk about why disease and longevity begin in the gut and ways to keep your gut healthy through processes you’ve probably never heard of before. He’s “educating people on the root cause of disease and how they can clean up their external environment and how they can clean up their internal environment at the same time and take back control of their health and reactivate their body's self-healing mechanism.”“Ninety percent of all the chemicals and toxins enter through the intestinal tract,” Dr. Group explains. He’s developed a unique form of oxygen to cleanse the digestive tract. This is paired with an active form of iodine that helps detoxify and helps repair any damaged tissue a lot faster.”Dr. Group’s background is in chiropractic and naturopathic care, nutrition and functional medicine, but he’s worked in all sorts of spaces in between. He’s closely followed the work of Tesla and even has his own “Men in Black”-type story from his early research work.We talk about his founding of the Global Healing Center, a nutrition and alternative medicine company that provides natural dietary/immune supplements and detox/cleanse programs, where he’s been CEO for 22 years. The Center’s began its own organic farm in 2009, which grew into a larger eco-manufacturing facility that makes products with pure, organic, and plant-based ingredients that can help you on your gut-healing journey. His personal mission is to teach and promote philosophies that produce good health, a clean environment, and positive thinking.Dr. Group has authored several publications and is a frequent guest on radio, TV programs and documentary films. He’s dedicated to helping others through his work and talks all about ways you can tune into greater healing on his YouTube Channel (with more than 25 million views). “Some of the cheapest, most effective things like diatomaceous activated charcoal, sunlight, water, meditation, these are all things that don't cost any money yet have profound healing effects on the body,” Dr. Group says.In this episode, Dr. Group and I cover a lot of ground. Everything from the intensity of the energy present in meditation to the ways you can profoundly heal your body. No matter your interest and knowledge in this topic, you’ll find something that resonates. Enjoy!
