Ep 674Why You Have CCE (Corona Cognitive Epidemic) and What To Do About It – Samuel Veissière, Ph.D. : 674
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Samuel Veissière, Ph.D., who examines social and evolutionary dimensions of cognition, mental health, and human well-being through a variety of projects. He’s an assistant professor of Psychiatry, co-director of the Culture, Mind, and Brain Program, and an associate member of the department of Anthropology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He caught my attention with his recent article in Psychology Today: The Coronavirus Is Much Worse Than You Think: How COVID-19 is infecting our minds, not our lungs. We’re going to take a look at the coronavirus, formally named COVID-19, from a decidedly different perspective. One that’s worth thinking about.“The human mind is really, really, really bad at estimating the statistical probabilities of anything,” Dr. Veissière says. “And human minds have evolved to specific cravings for different kinds of information, in particular, anything that conveys information about potential threats or danger.”His work as an anthropologist and cognitive scientist includes placebo effects and hypnosis, hyper-sociality in smartphone addiction, social polarization, gender and mental health, and the theoretical study of cultural evolution. He has worked with such varied populations as street children and sex workers in Northeast Brazil, indigenous peoples in the Arctic and the Amazon, children with neurodevelopmental disorders, people who intentionally conjure friendly auditory hallucinations, and Tibetan Buddhist monks in the Indian Himalayas. Dr. Veissière has published broadly on novel theories and experimental findings on the social nature of attention, cognition, mental health, and healing, and on the impact of the internet and new technologies on human sociality and well-being. As a special bonus in this episode, you’ll find out my best hacks to stay healthy while traveling. Enjoy the show! … And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Ep 664Flip the Switch Up or Down on Autophagy – James Clement : 664
In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m hosting a return guest because he’s doing some truly innovative work in the area of human health span and lifespan. James Clement is a lawyer and entrepreneur turned research scientist who has devoted the last two decades to understanding the science of life extension. His new book, “The Switch: Ignite Your Metabolism with Intermittent Fasting, Protein Cycling, and Keto,” is the result of years of scientific investigation that started with a curiosity of the human body’s mTOR/autophagy switch. Autophagy is a natural process that recycles and renews damaged cell parts and removes pathogens to keep us healthy. Like a dimmer “switch,” mTOR can turn autophagy up or down. A switch, James says, that’s at the center of nearly every anti-aging drug, nutraceutical, diet, and health choice that we make. “The purpose of the book is really to go into this molecular biology mechanism inside the cell, which is about as basic as you can get,” James says. “If you're not working these mechanisms properly, then it doesn't matter what your good intentions are, or the practices that you think you're following.”In our interview James gives practical tips on how we can activate autophagy through different regimens, such as calorie restriction, intermittent fasting, very-low-carb diets, exercise, or supplements. When it’s switched up, autophagy restores our natural metabolism, slows the aging process, and helps fend off diseases from diabetes, to cancer, to heart disease. James also is known for his Supercentenarian Research Study, which he started in 2010 and received international attention. Through worldwide scientific collaborations and in his own laboratory, his work focuses on advancing biomedical discoveries.Enjoy the show! It just means we're out and interested in stimulation, learning, curiosity, and new things.”She’s dived deeper into caves than any woman in history and set a women's world record for deep cave penetration. She became the first person to dive the ice caves of Antarctica, going further into an underwater cave system than any woman ever. “When I do choose to take risks, I'm very, very careful about assessing risks, trying to prevent as many things that could go wrong, pre-visualizing what could happen underwater, and then ensuring that I have the right training, the right personnel, the right equipment, and redundancy with me, so that I can handle that worst case possible scenario,” Jill says. She’s completed more than 7,500 dives in her career so far and says, “We are capable of so much more than we could possibly imagine.”Considered a legend in the diving community, she's spent more than three decades in submerged caves around the world partnering with National Geographic, NOAA, and various educational institutions and television networks worldwide. She’s also a writer and award-winning photographer and filmmaker who takes a keen interest in the health of our Earth’s oceans. In recognition of her lifetime achievement, Jill was awarded the inaugural Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration. Established by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in 2013, the medal recognizes singular achievements and the pursuit of excellence by an outstanding Canadian explorer. She also is the first Explorer in Residence for the society.Jill says cave diving is “one of the most dangerous, yet exhilarating, pursuits in the world.” In our conversation, we talk about her adventures underwater and how her survival depends on how she balances risk, fear and the right amount of breathing.“I'm scared all the time,” Jill says, “because I think being scared means that I care about the outcome.”Enjoy the show! This is going to be the episode that sets you on the path to creating habits that last. Why? Because BJ will introduce you to the science behind forming “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything ” and give you the tools you need to hack your own behavior.“The book does two things at once,” BJ says. “It defines what behavior design is and gives the models and methods of behavior design. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Lance Dalleck, Ph.D., a professor of Exercise and Sport Science at Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado.Lance's research validates the science behind CAR.O.L. FIT AI, a game-changing exercise bike that delivers peak fitness in just 40 seconds. And you don't even have to break a sweat. He shares some interesting findings that support the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training on the CAR.O.L. bike, an AI-powered, interactive exercise bike with self-learning algorithms. CAR.O.L. stands for CARdiovascular Optimization Logic. You may remember that I talked with the CAR.O.L. FIT AI co-founders on episode #615 of Bulletproof Radio about how to hack your cardiovascular system with the CAR.O.L.“With a 20-second sprint, you're increasing your energy demand above rest substantially,” Lance says. “That's a severe disruption to your homeostasis. And as a result of that, you're putting in motion a variety of upregulation of metabolic pathways that allow you to provide energy that will regenerate ATP so that you can keep sprinting for 20 seconds. And the research is pretty clear that we've identified that minimum time that turns on these pathways, 20 seconds, two bouts a day, and that's sufficient.”Lance teaches in both the Exercise and Sport Science and High-Altitude Exercise Physiology programs. He researches primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases through evidence-based interventions like exercise and nutrition and quantifies the energy expenditure of outdoor and non-traditional types of physical activity. His research into CAR.O.L. culminated in a paper published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health: “Reduced Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training is More Effective at Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Cardiometabolic Health than Traditional Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training.”Lance has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, delivered 30 conference proceedings, and written 10 book chapters. Ep 653Mastering Brain Waves and Creating Mind Bridges – Dawson Church : 653
EYuIn this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m at the Beverly Hilton in L.A. with my good friend Dawson Church, Ph.D. Today we’re going to dive into brain wave—what they are, why their frequencies are important and what they do in various emotional states, from stress to meditation. You’ll find out how brain growth is influenced by “the power of our behavior, of our beliefs, of our practices, of our spiritual practices, of our emotional states on our brains,” Dawson says. “We are reshaping our brains with every thought we think, with every emotion we feel, with every meditation session we do.”Some background you should know about Dawson: He’s an expert tapper—not of the dancing kind, but rather the emotional freedom technique kind. (EFT for short.) He’s also been on Bulletproof Radio before. In episode 474, we talked about all things tapping and he led me through an EFT session on that podcast. He has conducted dozens of clinical trials and founded the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare to promote groundbreaking new treatments. He’s studied the effects of meditation on the brain and tapping as a technique to help people heal from physical, emotional and mental challenges. As an award-winning author and researcher, his book “The Genie in Your Genes” linked emotions and genetics. His follow-up book, “Mind to Matter” examined the science of peak mental states. We discuss his forthcoming book, “Bliss Brain,” and the surprising science of the brain he discovered in his research and study of brain waves.“One of the big mysteries of neuroscience for decades was that the brain activity doesn't fluctuate by more than 5% up or down, day or night,” he says. “When you relax, your brain doesn't relax. Your brain activity just stays at the same high level.” … “When you're not doing a task, the brain sees all this unused spare capacity and it says, "Great. Let's grab this." And it grabs it to such a consistent degree that we call that the default mode network.”Listen on to learn more about brain activity and the fascinating way it bridges your consciousness.*This episode contains a mini session guided by Dawson that is a allows you to quickly access an altered state of consciousness.Enjoy the show!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 648How to Stay Present No Matter What – Don Wood, Ph.D. : 648
EThis episode of Bulletproof Radio was recorded live at the Genius Network. My guest spent years researching how trauma affects our minds and our lives. In doing so, he began to understand that events and experiences throughout our lifetime continue to play a role in how we experience life in the present. “Trauma is a glitch, it's an error message,” says Don Wood, Ph.D. “If you think about something that happened to you 10 years ago and you feel fear or anger, or you feel an emotion, then that's affecting you.”He also realized that there was a better way of treating the issue. “Teaching people to live with, manage and cope with the daily stress doesn’t fix the problem,” Don says. “The solution comes from understanding its source and providing a long-term permanent solution.”So, Don developed a more efficient and effective solution for trauma using modern advancements in the study of neuroscience and cutting-edge proprietary techniques. Because of things like the natural loss aversion of the brain, we have to override that with a different form of thinking.Dr. Swart also is intrigued by the three-way transmission of information between the limbic system, gut neurons and the gut microbiome. “Bacteria are using us as avatars to get whatever nutrition or resource they need to be able to survive, to multiply, then transform,” she says. “The way that helps leaders from a pathological angle is if you’ve got an addiction or a terrible craving, understanding that it could be the bacteria in your gut that's causing that, not you. And I think that level of separation helps people to step back and think…”Listen on to learn more about gaining greater clarity about your own intuition and the untapped potential of your brain.“I think that whole process of evolving and challenging your beliefs and embracing new ideas is really important,” Dr. Swart says. “I think my niche is to be able to represent based on current modern scientific thinking. He brings his extensive knowledge and practical application of the latest science on the human microbiome. “We know diversity within the microbiome is paramount to health and wellness, and even longevity,” he says.At Just Thrive Health, the focus is on probiotics that can actually survive the Wild West that is your microbiome. “We're putting a lot of effort into the science to understand microbial communities, microbial community structures and how they work together,” Kiran says. “In order to be a probiotic, it needs to arrive alive in the intestines,” Tina says. “It needs to actually confer a benefit onto the host, onto the body. Most of these probiotics were just getting into the gut and dying, dying before they ever got into the intestines. So, we looked at the research.”“You've got this gauntlet that microbes have to get through when they go through the oral cavity in order to be alive and function in the gut,” Kiran continues. “So, our question was, are there microbes that can naturally do that?”The more we’re researching the human microbiome, the more we’re learning about the connection between the gut and all other human body and brain systems. And that means better health for you. Listen on to learn more about what Just Thrive Health has discovered about probiotics. And yes, you’ll find out how bacteria can be armor-plated, live forever and survive in space.
