Old Space Show – Blake’s 7 “The Way Back” with Steven Schapansky

From one British science fiction show to another – It’s time for Blake’s 7! The show is very “Doctor Who adjacent”. Not only is it created by the father of the Daleks Terry Nation, but many of the people in front of and behind will reign super familiar. Unlike Doctor Who, the show does get to some more bleak territory. This was a fun discovery for me during the lockdown portion of the pandemic and I’m happy to have my companion Steven here to help guide back through it as he was one of the people that had me interested in checking it out in the first place. Steven Schapansky from Radio Free Skaro, Lazy Doctor Who and Doctor Who: The Memory Cheats is the Companion for Blake’s 7. Closing With A Song “Only The Lonely” by The Motels with Mike Vanderbilt

Mike Vanderbilt wraps up his stint here on The Summer of ’82 at 40 music video series. We discuss The Motels’ “Only the Lonely”. You may ask “Who are The Motels?” Well, look up “Suddenly Last Summer” and you go “Ahhhhh, ok!”. This video was done by the director of Highlander, which I believe we’ve done some from him before. It’s an interesting little noir throwback gem that has been given credit for the reason the song became a hit. One of the earliest instances of video pushing a song into more popularity. Old Space Show – Doctor Who “Dragonfire” with Tony Schaab

And as quickly as we began, it was over! Dragonfire marks a significant turn in the Sylvester McCoy run as the Seventh Doctor. It most importantly introduces us to his mainstay companion in Ace played by Sophie Aldrea. Ace is an important character that will go on to enrich the idea and writing of a companion in Doctor Who which would echo all the way through to the new series. Seeing as this is the end, Tony and I also reflect on this season as a whole, with its highs and lows and pick our favorite story of the four. Tony Schaab from ScienceFiction.com is the Companion for Doctor Who: The Sylvester McCoy Era. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (8/5) with special guest Mike Vanderbilt to close with a song. The Summer of ’82 at 40 with Scott Mendelson: August 6-8, 1982

August 6-8, 1982: Scott proclaims our “Worst Episode” of The Summer of ’82 at 40. The Pirate Movie, a notoriously known stinky flick is on the deck as is Cheech & Chong’s first big whiff with Things Are Tough All Over. All in all it’s just another brick in The Wall as Pink Floyd does its best to make things better. Closing With A Song “Hurts So Good” by John Cougar (Mellencamp) with Jessica Alsman

Jessica is back for round 4. This time her and I are getting a bit local. John Mellencamp was born, raised and still lives here in Indiana. When he had his massive breakout in “Hurts So Good” off his American Fool album, he was just John Cougar. Here about his name evolutions as well as Jessica’s personal anecdotes of crossing paths with him since she works in radio. It’s a fun little episode from a music video that doesn’t off a whole lot. Old Space Show – Doctor Who “Delta and the Bannermen” with Tony Schaab

I’ve been teasing that there is one serial this season that “figures it out” in regard to the Seventh Doctor era of Doctor Who. Delta and the Bannermen is that one that discovers and relishes in the hallmarks of what would come in the following 2 seasons. Tony and I discuss a lot of the “what if” portions of things that could have been different in regards to the scriptwriting and productions choices and options that were going on with this story. We also dive into a little bit of modern Doctor Who news for a bit at the top. Tony Schaab from ScienceFiction.com is the Companion for Doctor Who: The Sylvester McCoy Era. Closing With A Song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor with Troy Brownfield

The summer’s biggest song from one of its biggest movies – Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” is here. And our returning champion Troy Brownfied is here to dissect and devour it. Did you know that Stallone originally wanted “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen for Rocky III? Once rejected, he commissioned Survivor to write this song for it. So, should we credit Sly with one of the biggest hits of 82? This thing was a MONSTER! Paradise Towers is a Doctor Who serial that I admire a lot, but doesn’t quite execute very well. Closing With A Song “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell with Jennifer Wreyford

Jennifer returns and we talk some “Tainted Love”. I whoops and didn’t realize there was another video for the UK before it hit the states. Jennifer outresearched me and covered it though. This little on big smash was already a hit overseas the previous year before it got here to the states, but the summer of 1982 is where us Yanks found it to be one of the hottest jams around! Closing With A Song “Caught Up In You” by 38 Special with Mike Vanderbilt

I kind of took a gamble and guessed Mike Vanderbilt would be a 38 Special guy. And, I was not wrong at all. He’s got a fun load of information on them as well as his thoughts on their style and type. Closing With A Song “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League with Jessica Alsman

Jessica Alsman returns and we have the song that finally knocks off Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. You all know The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me”. It’s an interesting, energetic kind of song with nice trade offs and memorable verses with a belting chorus. Oddly enough, while interesting in its own right, the music video doesn’t seem to fit this song well. it’s not what you’re expecting. Artistic merit was admired, but this wasn’t the song for it. Closing With A Song “Love’s Been A Little Bit Hard On Me” by Juice Newton with Troy Brownfield

Juice Newton had been around for quite some time before busting loose with her previous album in 1981 that had such biggies as “Angel of the Morning” and “Queen of Hearts”. “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me” continued the climb of hits. Troy Brownfield was on assignment for this video. And it showcases the comedic side of the singer as well as having some odd sitcom parody-like qualities to it. LIVE! with The Kinda Nerdy Girls & James T. Wulfgar at PopCon 2022

Running the podcast stage, everything doesn’t go too smoothly all the time. For instance, I had a few shows scheduled to perform that didn’t show up. What happens then? I provide “filler”. And I have some of the best people to help me out with that when I’m at PopCon. What is included in this bonus PopCon episode is some banter with a few folks. The first set includes John Bottorff and Katie Ayres Schrock from the Kinda Nerdy Girls podcast. You’ll remember their fearless leader KJ graced The Brandon Peters Show last year when we discussed The Losers. We sit and talk a good many rambly things while also getting into a little bit of their program. Next up, James T. Wulfgar of Wulfgar Weapons & Props took some time to sit and ramble with me. We talk about his skills as a cosplayer and prop maker. His stuff is quite legit and has been used in many a movie, tv show or music video. And of course we go off track and talk about things we’ve been watching and inspired by. He’s a real good chap, James, and his time to show up on this podcast has been long overdue. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/20 to continue The Summer of ’82 at 40 with Scott Mendelson. Closing With A Song “Rosanna” by Toto with Jennifer Wreyford

Jennifer Wreyford is back and we have a gem of a video to talk about. “Rosanna” was unknowingly star-studded and Dirty Dancing heavy when it cast Cynthia Rhodes to star and Patrick Swayze as one of the background dancers in it. The video also has a cool West Side Story vibe to it. Toto’s “Toto IV” would go on to win the Grammy for Best Album from the year 1982. Said album that also contained “Africa” would stack up those Grammy’s from plenty of other categories in the ceremony held in 1983. If you’re not familiar with Alyson, you probably don’t realize you already are. Her magnificent work in make-up and costuming has caught the eye of viral social media, media outlets and celebrities around the globe. Alyson is one of the most friendly, excited, energetic and radiant people I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with in podcastings. She was incredibly generous and really appreciates her crowd, fans and colleagues. I hope that showcases in the recording and I hope you enjoy this episode! -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/17 to close with a song featuring Jennifer Wreyford. LIVE! at PopCon 2022 with Jessica Alsman

Jessica Alsman and I returned to PopCon to deliver yet another killer live show once again challenging convention goers to a game of vintage Trivial Pursuit. This Trivial Pursuit was the 20th Anniversary Edition that included questions from 1982-2002. We added a rule like “ask an adult” or “ask a youth”. Wacky prizes were handed out and we had some special guests drop in to take part in the fun as well! You may recognize some former guests of the show popping in to try their hand at the game. As always, thanks to those who partook, and I hope you enjoy hearing yourself on recording to provide some sort of keepsake memory from PopCon 2022. We had a lot of fun ourselves and look forward to hopefully doing another round next year. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/15 with Old Space TECHNICAL INFORMATION VocalsBrandon – Pyle PDMIC58Jessica – Pyle PDMIC58Guests – Pyle PDMIC 58 Post ProductionNCH Wavepad Masters Edition v8.38NCH MixPad Masters v5.22The Levelator 2 RUNTIME: 84 minutes

June 18-20, 1982: Annie opens wide and we cover this big old school musical throwback properly. Two big stars do what they do best as Al Pacino stars in a Kramer Vs. Kramer knock off called Author! Closing With A Song: “Heat of the Moment” by Asia with Mike Vanderbilt

The Summer of ’82 at 40 with Scott Mendelson: June 11-13, 1982

June 11-13, 1982: We arrive at the summer’s highest profile success story as well as its highest profile bomb. Closing With A Song “Don’t Talk To Strangers” by Rick Springfield with Jessica Alsman

Jessica’s second turn at bat comes with the valiant effort by Rick Springfield. His lead single to his album to follow up his mega success with “Jessie’s Girl” just could not reach #1 despite it being in its grasp. “Don’t Talk To Strangers” hung around at #2 for consecutive weeks, unable to dethrone “Ebony & Ivory”. The video for the song is an absolute trip. Jessica Alsman and I have quite the time trying to decode, make sense of and scratch our heads at whatever the hell the video is trying to convey. Closing With A Song “The Other Woman” by Ray Parker Jr. with Troy Brownfield

Troy Brownfield completes your roster for the Summer of ’82 at 40 music video series guests. And funny enough, like his first appearance on the show, we are talking about a music video that is very inspired by the Universal Classic Monsters. Ray Parker Jr has a legacy of being known only for the Ghostbusters theme song and his subsequent lawsuit with Huey Lewis and the News. However, the guy really was much more than that. He had other big hit songs and quite frankly…rocks! With this song, he appears to be ahead of the curve in a lot of areas that would later be conquered by the likes of Michael Jackson and Prince. Of course The Summer of ’82 at 40 wouldn’t be without the great Mike Vanderbilt! He’s the 2nd of our 4 rotating guests for the music video series and I’m elated to have him on board for the whole summer! Well, the show is finally tackling some Beatles territory. “Ebony and Ivory” was a humongous hit for Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder in the summer of 1982.
