Time to look back on 2023. One of my favorite parts of 2023 was meeting Chris Johnson of The Normies and doing some live shows with him at both PopCon events last year. I’ve asked him to join me here as we give our Top 10 lists of the films released this past year. In addition, we give our thoughts on what the year as a whole meant to film as an art form and in the pop culture spectrum. We give our best “new to me” film picks as well as my honorable mentions and look forward to films being released this year (2024). I’ve had many listeners asking when they’d be hearing some of the stuff I’d recorded at Doctoberfest 2023 and it’s finally time. A big thank you to Keith & Jany Bradbury of Who North America for having me and their son Jonathan who provided recording equipment and filmed and recorded for me. During Doctoberfest I had a short chat with the wonderful Sophie Aldred who played the 7th Doctor companion Ace on the classic series from 1987-1989, reprising it a year ago for the 13th Doctor’s regeneration story “Power of the Doctor”. Following the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, it is believed we will be seeing a reset in the land of DC Comics turned movies under the new regime of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Following the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, it is believed we will be seeing a reset in the land of DC Comics turned movies under the new regime of James Gunn and Peter Safran. In this retrospective, Scott Mendelson and I (along with some guests) will be taking a look back at the films that made up the run, dubbed “DCEU” by many, starting with Man of Steel back in 2013. This 3rd segment of films could be noted as the MAX Era of the DCEU. Every single one of them premiered on MAX (2 concurrent with theatrical releases). We get another go round with Wonder Woman this time in 1984, Justice League but Zack Snyder’s version, THE Suicide Squad and then Peacemaker from that film in a tv series. Chris Johnson from The Normies (and my cohost for 2 Brandon Peters Show Live! editions this past summer), joins us for his first trip on the show proper. Products of the Panic is already back. This time, Troy and I discuss one that has been mentioned a few times, INDICTMENT: THE MCMARTIN TRIAL. This is an Emmy Award winning television movie that HBO produced back in 1995 starring James Woods, Mercedes Ruehl and Henry Thomas. The film takes a look at one of the longest, most insane trials in our United States history. All based on fabrications and originated from a disturbed and mentally troubled individual. Despite clear evidence, the trial kept moving on. Satanism was at the blame out of nowhere and it fractured the lives of the innocent. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return. Jessica and Greg join me once again for another horror retrospective. This spooky season I’m going with some of their favorites. We start with Greg who loves The Devil’s Rejects and Rob Zombie’s Firefly Trilogy it is a part of that also includes House of 1000 Corpses and 3 From Hell. We dive deep and we go long. Products of the Panic is back for its third installment. This time, Troy and I look at the absolutely ludicrous Geraldo Rivera prime time special from 1988 called “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground.” This one features loads of “bull” and even Ozzy Osbourne makes an appearance. “Products of the Panic” a recurring segment on this podcast. Show regular Troy Brownfield (The Saturday Evening Post) and I use this series to take a look at some of the media and propaganda created during the height of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s. Nicholas Rohrman and I met this year as roomies at PopCon Louisville. He’s a talented young lad and I was excited to finally bring him on the show. We discuss his podcast/comedy group So Far So Good as well as some of his other endeavors including “Constellation Quest” (link below). He brought to the table 2002’s The Country Bears. This derided upon arrival movie delivered a lengthy discussion both in praise humor and critical analysis from us. I loved every second of it and I hope you do, too. Jamie Alvey helps kick off our first movie chat of Year 4, which seems to be a trend now. But, she has exciting news as her film Bystanders is currently in post production. We talk a whole load about that. We also discuss a favorite of mine that is one of the few this side of the year 2000 to sincerely hold the “cult classic” status. Series 7 is both of and ahead of its time. Welcome to YEAR 4 of The Brandon Peters Show. As I normally kick off each year, one of my guests returns to reflect on the prior year of the show and stuff I aim at looking forward to. PopCon week continues with more from PopCon Indy 2023! PopCon Louisville proved to be an arena of making plenty of new friends. One of the ones I valued most was that of Chris Johnson from The Normies. He subbed for Jessica on the live show and between that and this I really enjoy our chemistry and bouncing off one another. The Summer of ’93 at 30 is a weekly retrospective journey through American pop culture during May, June, July and August of 1993. PopCon Louisville took place June 16-18, 2023. It was the very first time in the city. I was once again the host/MC/moderator of the Live Podcast Stage at the event.
