Tarkovsky’s Tales Part 5: Mirror (1975) with Steven Warren Hill
And we’re back! Tarkovsky’s Tales takes us to a very personal film of his in Mirror. A collection of memories, thoughts, ideas, reckoning and more is on full display as Andrei spills it to us in a surreal, abstract fashion. A highly regarded film, both of us enjoy patches, do our best to decipher things and also discuss why this one can be a tough nut to crack. Steven Warren Hill once again joins me for this discussion. When this retrospective picks up again in August we’ll be looking at Stalker from 1979. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (8/1) with The Summer of 2015 at 10 music video companion series featuring Jennifer Wreyford. “Tarkovsky’s Tales Part 4: Solaris (1972) with Steven Warren Hill
We interrupt The Summer of 2015 at 10 for a moment to resume the Tarkovsky’s Tales retrospective. Steven Warren Hill and I this time are talking about the science fiction masterpiece SOLARIS from 1972. A film that is probably most people’s introduction to Andrei Tarkovsky. In prep for this I’ve read the book for the first time and revisited the Steven Soderbergh version from the early 2000s. Another wonderful estudious film discussion in this lovely series that I hope you are enjoying. Steven Warren Hill once again joins me for this discussion. In our 3rd part of this retrospective, we kind of begin again. Andrei Tarkovsky considers 1966’s Andrei Rublev as his first film post a cinematic graduation of sorts. The 3 hour fictional biopic is one rich with thematics in philosophy, art, history, human nature and so much more. On Saturday, March 8th, I held a presentation for the quarterly meetup for INPodcasting on the topic of “Social Media and Marketing”. Outside of the show and in my home of Indianapolis, I do plenty of work in terms of trying to craft a podcast community as well as helping and educating other podcasters. While this is off the topic of movies, I felt what Rana provided was quite informative and beneficial and wanted to share this for this week’s episode. For the movie stuff – I’ll be on both The Box Office Podcast and Out Now With Aaron & Abe discussing “Mickey 17”. James Bond Will Return with Scott Mendelson & Aaron Neuwirth
Some news occurred in the recent weeks that struck a pretty hard cord in the film nerd circles. Barbara Broccoli & Michael G. Wilson have agreed to relinquish all creative control of the James Bond franchise to Amazon. A once protected and family owned cinematic operation would now be in the hands of the corporate overlord…or Blofeld owns Bond if you think about it. What would this mean? Will we see our greatest fears realized? Scott Mendelons, Aaron Neuwirth and I take a break from recording the upcoming The Summer of 2015 at 10 to talk about what makes Bond special, the assumptions on how the franchise will be handled and a discussion of “Who exactly is Amazon and does their past film & television decisions warrant this fear?”. Considering my start as a regular writer and postcaster began with 007 (one of my dearest, favorite movie series) with both Scott & Aaron – we all felt like we wanted to have a conversation and address this hot topic. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return. “Tarkovsky’s Tales Part 1: The Student Films” with Steven Warren HIll
Two things about this series. First, there have been both listeners and guests in the past wanting me to do certain films from iconic Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. Personally, if I was going to tackle Tarkovsky, I wanted to do the whole thing. Second, when I spoke with Steven Warren Hill at Doctoberfest, he mentioned Tarkovsky was one of his top 3 favorite directors. After getting to know him over the past year, it just felt like stars were finally aligning to do Tarkovsky on the show. This retrospective will drop 1 part per month. In March, we will discuss Ivan’s Childhood. This first episode covers 3 short films that he made in college. Steven and I note his influences as well as the sort of craft he was developing and many traits being in place. We also touch on the directors and films that we recognize from these. To keep the Diablo Cody train going, Steven also talks about how she came to Chicago TARDIS in 2006 and wrote a piece about it in her Pre-Juno launch to stardom. Jennifer’s Body with Greg McGoon
I thought this would be a funny connecting episode to last week. When Greg and I were talking about a topic for the episode he wound up randomly mentioning Jennifer’s Body and I KNEW that was the one, having just done “the Juno movie” The Wizard of Gore. Diablo Cody’s follow-up to Juno is one of the most tried and true cult classics of the 2000s. The term cult classic gets thrown out pretty abusively to the myopic terminally online folks, but Jennifer’s Body fits it. Critical failure? Check. Box office failure? Check. Zero recognition for prestige awards? Check. Rediscovery much further down the road? Check. Heck, even audiences in 2009 raked it through the coals. In addition, we get the scoop on Greg’s latest book (a sequel to his earlier Oliver fairy tale adventure) that is due out in March. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return with the first part of the Andrei Tarkovsky Retrospective with special guest Steven Warren Hill. 2024 Movie Draft w/ Mark Hofmeyer via Movies, Films & Flix
While this isn’t a new episode, it’s likely new to you. In December, I was honored to guest for the first time on the Movies, Films and Flix Podcast. That, of course, is guest of the show Mark Hofmeyer’s podcast. When we recorded it, he encouraged me to feel free to distribute the recording on my podcast as well. And with me taking some time off here, I thought, why not now? Plus, in January people are still catching up with the best of 2024 and the awards contenders are still slowly rolling out. So, it’s very much still a relevant conversation and my thoughts really haven’t changed. This was a fun exercise and enjoyable to record so I hope you enjoy it too! See you all soon! -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return with regular new episodes in February 2025. The Top 10 Films of 2024 with Chris Johnson
I once again invited Chris Johnson from The Normies to do the Top 10 Films of the year episode with me. We’ve had a lot of fun this year and I enjoyed doing the top 10 with him last year. So…why the hell not! In addition to our film selections for the best of 2024, we reflect on our 2024s with our lives and our gigs. We also have our best “new to me” film of the year and then honorable mentions as well. Its fun, swift 2 hours and I hope you enjoy, agree, disagree or find recommendations in our selections. Thanks again to everyone who continues to listen, keep up with and support this show. It truly means the world. Here’s to more great podcasting and other adventures in 2025! -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return with regular episodes in February 2025. Christmas Comes to Willow Creek (1987) with Pres Maxson
Happy Holidays from all of us at The Brandon Peters Show. As per the holiday tradition he created – Pres Maxson makes good on his promise to talk a weird seasonal special piece of media in which he pitches at the end of The Summer Of series. This year is quite the treat as it sees the first ever reunion of Bo and Luke Duke as Tom Wopat and John Schneider get to get for 1987’s “Christmas Comes To Willow Creek”. And boy what an odd duck this one is! I really hope it is as much a weird treat for us to talk about the movie as it was to watch it! -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return. 2024: Satan’s Big Year with Troy Brownfield
Late in the summer, Troy Brownfield hit me up with something he’d observed over the past year in film – horror was leaning on its king (Satan) as a source for many high profile/widely released/buzzed about films. After a discussion, we decided an end of the year round up might be necessary in case any others might drop. And low and behold, one did. So join us for “Satan’s Big Year” as we reflect upon Late Night With The Devil, Immaculate, The First Omen, MaxXxine and Heretic. -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return Monday (12/23) with Pres Maxson and “Christmas Comes To WIllow Creek” (1987).
