Closing With A Song “I Want To Break Free” by Queen with Sharareh Drury
From my favorite band to Sharareh’s, the show takes us to one of the most iconic bands and frontmen in music history; Queen. “I Want To Break Free” is a landmark video for them and a controversial one only to us prudes in the United States of America. Hear all about it as well as our love and appreciation for Freddie Mercury and the lovely music he gifted us with in his lifetime. Sharareh Drury is back for this one and shares why it’s her favorite band and the deeper connection she felt to Freddie Mercury upon discovering his heritage. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. However, you can watch the entire video before listening right here. The Brandon Peters Show & Sharareh Drury will return next week with our third and concluding installment for this series of the World Film Project, Iran’s A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) TECHNICAL INFORMATION VocalsBrandon – Shure SM58-LCSharareh – Laptop Microphone (Recorded with ZOOM) Post ProductionNCH Wavepad Masters Edition v8.38NCH MixPad Masters v5.22The Levelator 2 RUNTIME: 30 minutes
Old Teen Show: The Heights “What Does It Take”
Wow, for a short lived show, it’s exciting that we get to see this Dizzy and Jodi wedding already. We discuss the hijinks as well as marvel at “Who in the hell is this guy?” with Dizzy’s brother. Oh…and MORE commercials talk! Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (8/13) to close with a song. Remote Control (1992) with Sharareh Drury
The “World Film Project” enters week 2. To refresh or introduce you to this concept, during these couple weeks on the show, we’ll be spotlighting a film that a country, not necessarily always given the spotlight for their cinematic output, considers one of their classics. Joining me for this adventure will be show regular Sharareh Drury. Her background and film appreciation really lends her talents in this direction and I’m excited for the discussion we’ll have on these movies. Next up here is Sódóma Reykjavík aka Remote Control (1992) from Iceland. This wild and crazy teen comedy is one that both Sharareh and I fell in love with. It’s a comedy in the style of such films as After Hours, Go, Superbad, Booksmart…you get the gist. The “one crazy night” genre. Seek out this film and enjoy our discussion! 0:03:44 – Remote Control Discussion0:53:35 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 8/11 with Old Teen Show. Closing With A Song “Crash Into Me” by Dave Matthews Band with Sharareh Drury
Here’s a moment some of you have been waiting for. Its not really a secret, but Dave Matthews Band is my favorite band. Many who know me have been asking repeatedly for when I would discuss one of their music videos. Here we are. And why the hell not “Crash Into Me”. Don’t worry, this won’t be the only foray into DMB on this show. Sharareh Drury graciously indulges my fandom and has a wonderful discussion and perspective on them in contrast to my super fandom. I hope you all enjoy! Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “Splendor In The Past”
It appears that the commercials aren’t going anywhere for a while so OH JOY to that! This is the promised Alex & Rita go to the bone zone episode and Jessica and I have PLENTY to say about that! Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (8/6) to close with a song. The Girl With The Red Scarf (1977) with Sharareh Drury
This week begins a 3 week journey into what I’m calling the “World Film Project”. Over the next few weeks we’ll be spotlighting a film that a country, not necessarily always given the spotlight for their cinematic output, considers one of their classics. Joining for this adventure will be show regular Sharareh Drury. Her background and film appreciation really lends her talents in this direction and I’m excited for the discussion we’ll have on these movies. (We’ve already recorded 2 and they are absolutely magnificent). First up, we are stopping in Turkey. 1977’s Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalim (The Girl with the Red Scarf) features a pair of their biggest stars at the height of popularity in a movie that is one of their finest. While access to it can be hard, if you can find it, I definitely recommend seeing it before listening to the episode. 0:01:22 – World Film Project overview0:10:14 – The Girl With The Red Scarf Discussion1:00:40 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 8/4 with Old Teen Show. Closing With A Song “Vasoline” by Stone Temple Pilots with Danielle Sepulveres
I’m very excited to crack open the can of Stone Temple Pilots here with “Vasoline”. One of my favorite bands from my youth, they really scored big on their second album, Purple. The music video is quite a wickedly stylish one as well. Danielle Sepulveres wanders back to help close this week out. Sure, “Big Empty” is the Stone Temple Pilots single from The Crow, but that music video is merely clips from the film and not much to chew on. “Vasoline” provides A LOT more and comes from the same album. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. However, you can watch the entire video before listening right here. The Brandon Peters Show will return next week to ACTUALLY begin the World Film Project with special guest Sharareh Drury and the film Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalim (The Girl With The Red Scarf). Old Teen Show: The Heights “No Place Like Home”
Well, well, well. Commercials, we meet again. Jessica and I geek out over the wealth of marketing material encased in the recording of the episode we watched. We also have a healthy conversation on this one that has 3 separate storylines with different pairings of people. Also, prepare yourself for a very lengthy tangent I have about one of my all time favorite menu items at Taco Bell. Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (7/30) to close with a song. The Crow (1994) with Danielle Sepulveres
It’s with great excitement that I welcome Danielle Sepulveres back on the show. I rather enjoyed our conversations from her first appearance a lot. Danielle has great stories to tell and experiences to share, and I’m here for all of it. This time around, we’re talking about the 90s grunge classic The Crow. The film just so happens to be a Top 5 film for Danielle, too. In addition to some terrific analysis of the film, we also cover some other things regarding digital effects, the vibe of the era it’s trying to capture and the soundtrack to the film. Five years ago on Out Now With Aaron & Abe, we did a Commentary for The Crow. If you are looking for more after this episode, I recommend you seek out that splendid commentary to keep the downer hero mojo going. I hope you enjoy this episode. I rather loved the playback of it during post production and found myself lost in the conversation again. 0:01:01 – Catching up with Danielle Sepulveres0:08:35 – The Crow Discussion0:52:19 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 7/28 with Old Teen Show. Out Now Commentary – Point Break (1991)
An interesting follow up to The Fast and the Furious this month as we now go to the film it knocked off: Point Break. The Kathryn BIgelow action classic turns 30 this month and we look back at how stylish and wonderful her direction is and go over the legacy of the film. In addition to myself, this commentary features Aaron Neuwirth (Out Now host, We Live Entertainment), Scott Mendelson (Forbes) and Peter Paras (Why So Blu, Hey It’s Peter Paras YouTube Channel). -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return ALL NEW Monday with The Crow (1994) featuring special guest Danielle Sepulveres! Old Teen Show: The Heights “Fear of Heights”
Our first notable guest star stops by The Heights this week and causes a stir with Rita. Hear Jessica endure as I geek out over Jill Shoelen who shakes things up on Episode 6! LIVE! at PopCon 2021 with Jessica Alsman
PopCon returned in person this month and it was bigger and more exciting than ever! On the Saturday of the 3-Day event, Jessia Alsman and I recorded/performed the first ever LIVE edition of The Brandon Peters Show! For this episode of the show, we had a competition. Jessica and I would face off in a game of Trivial Pursuit. The catch; the Trivial Pursuit was from 1981. And we wouldn’t be answering the questions, members of our audience and PopCon attendees would be helping either myself or Jessica out. The loser of this game would have to complete an embarrassing task. Our contestants, if they got questions right, would take home prizes. This was quite a joy to do and went over well. I hope the audio only version here translates some of the big time fun we had. And if you were a part of the show, I hope you enjoy hearing yourself on the recording and THANK YOU for participating! -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 7/21 with Old Teen Show. Closing With A Song “I Need Love” by LL Cool J with Peter Paras
Keeping the 80s hip hop train rolling, we stop on a damn larger than life icon – LL COOL J! A much different guy than we know him now, we travel back to a rather big left turn for the whole genre with a “rap ballad” that met success across all sorts of borders and territories. “I Need Love” is a classic now and you know the beat by heart, but it wasn’t so much then. Peter Paras rejoins as we look at LL Cool J and talk about some of his contemporaries of the time too. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “Reunion”
Well, this could possibly be one of the funniest episodes of Old Teen or Old Space Show ever recorded. And sadly, the subject matter isn’t funny, but the way the show delivers it…well. Just take a listen. Our predictions last time were way off. But enjoy this banter (An Episode For Dad). Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. Breakin’ (1984) with Peter Paras
You’ve heard him on the commentaries, now get to know Peter Paras a little better here on the show proper. Peter has recently shifted into a newer endeavor of producing video essays on YouTube. His first one was on the film Step Up 2: The Streets. Which is fitting because… He chose a stone cold classic for this episode’s discussion – BREAKIN’! I unabashedly love this movie and was excited he picked it. We have a very lengthy conversation on the film and really get into other things like how films can be great without the typical technical prestige that many of the greats come by and get by on other nontraditional strengths. Peter and I also get into some other tangents as well. You’re probably going to want to check back in on this episode for the uncut version on YouTube Thursday because I had a lot to trim for this one. And its TERRIFIC stuff too. Just a bit much way off topic and some of it took too long to get to Breakin’. So there’s a heads up from me. Enjoy! 0:01:06 – Peter Paras Interview0:20:17 – Breakin’ Discussion1:12:05 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 7/7 with Old Teen Show. Closing With A Song “Holy Diver” by Dio with Troy Brownfield
Time to get metal once again! Fitting perfectly with Hawk The Slayer this week, Troy Brownfield and I discuss the sword and sorcery inspired “Holy Diver” from Dio. We also dive into fantasy and metal’s bond to one another and the career of the great Ronnie James Dio. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “On The Nickel”
Jessica and I have been taking in The Heights via a streaming platform that everyone uses. And this particular episode happened to have a full recording with commercials intact. So not only do you get to hear us discuss the show, but we totally lose it with our excitement over these vintage marketing gems from 1992! Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (7/2) to close with a song. Hawk The Slayer (1980) with Troy Brownfield
Troy Brownfield becomes the first guest to return for a third time However, he’s somehow managed to not be on a regular episode proper yet. He was a part of the first roundtable and then appeared during the Holiday Gift Guide series. So now, he’s checking that off his list. He’s brought 80s sword and sorcery classic Hawk The Slayer to the forum to discuss. In my older age here, I’ve actually come to appreciate this era of fantasy film and really found a fondness and appreciation for a lot of the stuff many would consider “junk”. Troy recently wrote an article about this period in film and Hawk The Slayer is one of his favorites. It was great to share an appreciation and understanding for the film and ones like it from this time. I must mention the recent run on this show has been up, down and all round and I’m SO HERE FORT IT. That’s part of the majesty for this first year is that its had a breakneck streak and you really never know what you’re going to have next. 0:01:03 – Troy Brownfield Interview0:22:39 – Hawk The Slayer Discussion1:16:55 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/30 with Old Teen Show. Closing With A Song “The Warrior'” by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth with Chelsea Christer
Time to rock! Also, time to have some talk about our fondness for GLOW. Chelsea Christer is back and we share our appreciation for this wacky video as well as the love we have for the Netflix TV show for which it served as the flagship track! Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “Evil Ways”
This is the episode where if you had suspicions about JT being a complete dick; they are WELL CONFIRMED. We find ourselves in the midst of some juicy young drama in the 3rd episode of the The Heights! And another new song called “Natalie” is…I guess…pretty? Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Brandon Peters Show will return Friday (6/18) to close with a song. The Rider (2017) with Chelsea Christer
In my journeys on this podcast, I’ve been sharing time with friends old and new and meeting fresh faces along the way. Chelsea Christer was a special one as I found myself in one of my most inspired week’s creatively in both researching, interviewing, recording and doing the promo video “The Decline of Podcast Civilization”. She’s back here and we are talking about another film on her list she originally gave me, Chloe Zhao’s The Rider. I really enjoy Chelsea’s filmic insight and her eye for these things. And this was a damn good one to talk about on the show. (I really enjoy the sharp left turns this show takes; in 3 weeks we’ve gone from a 1960s Haunted House movie to a 2003 big studio rom com to now a indie personal character drama from 2017). BUT – That’s not all! We both are quite enamored with Bo Burnham’s latest Netflix special, Inside. So we have dedicated the “What Else” segment into an added discussion about that. It’s kind of a double feature episode. It was great having Chelsea back on and hearing about her creative prospects and talking about some fun film stuff. Closing With A Song “You’ll Think Of Me'” by Keith Urban with Greg McGoon
Keith Urban provides a song for How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, but unfortunately that video doesn’t really have much material to sink our teeth into. “You’ll Think Of Me” comes from the same album as that song and has much more of a story and artistic touches to it. Greg McGoon is also a BIG Keith Urban fan and provides such a rich background on Urban and his own personal relationship to the music. This one covers the video and a lot about Mr. Urban. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “A Star Ain’t Nothing But a Ball ‘O Gas”
We finally have a full on episode to discuss with the show. Jessica and I get our first real taste of the heights and our characters in action. Dramas are raised, fun is had, music is played and love is in the air. Really excited by the response to doing this left turn from Old Space Show! It was something I really wanted to explore, but admittedly it felt a hair risky. So, thank you! Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) with Greg McGoon
Nope, not the episode I advertised at the end of last week. My apologies. The World Film Project WILL indeed be happening, but we’ve had a little delay. Thanks for your understanding and interest in that. INSTEAD – Greg McGoon returns and we are tackling a film we both were excited to talk about when he FIRST showed up on the program. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days happens to be one of Greg’s favorite films and my wife’s personal favorite film. What I never imagined with this film, is one of the best conversations about a film the show has ever produced. Sure, it’s long, but it’s razor sharp on topic and a lot of fun. We also digress into some of the biases on romantic comedies and the subgenre’s history and the like. Greg also drops a couple of other films during this episode that you can probably log for future installments on his returns to the show. This was the blast of fun I needed in the short window I had to come up with an alternative episode for this week. 0:00:53 – Catching up with Greg0:06:55 – How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days Discussion1:21:04 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/16 with Old Teen Show! Closing With A Song “Sunglasses at Night'” by Corey Hart with James Oster
People talk about the 1980s and “The Coreys” ; they are usually just referring to a pair of fellas. However, I argue there are 3. Corey Hart was a Canadian phenom that burst onto the scene with the synth soaked anthem “Sunglasses at Night”. This music video is just as goofy as the song, but it’s also super rad in that way. Also super rad is James Oster who has relished the opportunity to discuss both Corey Hart and this song. We have a pretty good back and forth about this one. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Old Teen Show: The Heights “Talk To An Angel”
Well, this is a left turn, yes? No space or time travel here. Just rock and angst. Welcome aboard an obscure show in the shadow of Beverly Hills 90210 in the 1990s. The grunge infused The Heights couldn’t pull off the magic that Melrose Place did. But it did manage a #1 hit song. Unfortunately, aside from a 6 minute clip, we could not find the first episode of the show to discuss this episode. BUT, we do our best to give background on the show and characters as well as talk about the song this show was known for. Jessica Alsman from the The Bob & Tom Show is the Classmate for The Heights. The Haunting (1963) with James Oster
Thank you so much for coming back after I took a week off! Did you miss me? I missed you. Let’s get back to business shall we? James Oster aka “Jimmy O” returns to the show. This is the first time I’ve ever had him on one of my programs to talk about something that wasn’t Friday the 13th. We talk a bit about his shows and get into his work as a junket interviewer and lots of stuff that comes with that territory. The film he’s chosen is an absolute masterpiece. The Haunting is still hella effective today. We have a really good discussion of it from all sorts of angles. We talk about the craft, the material, the themes, the performers…EVERYTHING. You’re really going to enjoy this one! 0:00:58 – James Oster Interview0:22:07 – The Haunting (1963) Discussion0:51:39 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 6/9 with the premiere of Old Teen Show! Closing With A Song “Only Wanna Be With You” by Hootie & The Blowfish with Carl Doninger
In the history of music, there are always songs you got entirely sick of. Overplayed to hell, can’t avoid it no matter where you go or what you’re listening to. It was a lot worse back in the day when you had radio stations and music videos that would just go nonstop. One of the poster children for that was Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be With You”. It came for you and your earwaves relentlessly. I’d argue this and TLC’s “Waterfalls” probably battle for the most overplayed music video of the 90s. To share in the PTSD of Hootie and stuff like this, is CEO of PopCon, Carl Doninger, who returns from earlier in the week! Breaking Away (1979) with Carl Doninger
Carl Doninger is the guy behind one of my favorite events of the summer, the year, the city I live in: POPCORN! Yes, you’ve heard much about this convention on the show throughout its existence. And well, that’s because it’s important to me and so many others. You’ll get to learn all about this year’s event (July 9-11, 2021) and some of the history behind its creation as well as some of Carl’s fond memories. His film that he brings to the show is 1979’s Breaking Away. A film nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and winning for Best Original Screenplay. Though a well regarded coming of age and sports film that features early roles for Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, it feels like it’s not at the front of conversations enough. Carl mentions that he and I have had numerous conversations that should have been podcasts episodes, we just never recorded them. Well, here’s one and I feel one of our best. He brings a very personal touch to this film, having lived in the Bloomington, Indiana culture and having been a part of the Little 500 race himself. I’m thrilled to have finally done an episode of a podcast with Carl, and perhaps the KRULL episodes we tease will come to fruition in the near future! 0:01:02 – Carl Doninger Interview0:24:24 – Breaking Away Discussion0:47:40 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 5/26 with the finale of Old Space Show: Quantum Leap, Season 1. Closing With A Song “Slippin'” by DMX with Sharai Bohannon
Since I schedule, plan far ahead and also try and find appropriate material that my guests are familiar or comfortable with talking about when it comes to these music video episodes, I haven’t been able to touch on the late, great DMX since his passing. In my late teens, early 20s, I was quite a big fan of his music. In a time where I was a metal-head angsty white boy, his music reached me and opened my eyes to the hip hop world of that era. And there’s no better song to show why DMX was a cut above the rest than his personal and deeply open ballad “Slippin'”. Sharai Bohannon of A Nightmare On Fierce Street returns to share our love of the late hip hop legend and share what it was that made him stand out and like no others before or after him. We dive into the importance of this song as well as the cryptic prophetic nature of the accompanying music video. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Out Now Commentary – Hannibal Rising (2007)
The monthly commentary series for Out Now with Aaron & Abe concludes its journey through the cinematic adaptations of the Thomas Harris novels surrounding Hannibal Lecter. We go out on a high, with the film everyone has been eagerly awaiting us to cover! This is the best and most favoritest one of them all, yes? Gaspard Ulliel is the definitive Lecter, right? That’s what Peter Paras says, anyway. In addition to myself, this commentary features Aaron Neuwirth (Out Now host, We Live Entertainment), Scott Mendelson (Forbes) and Yancy Berns (Milky Way Blues). -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return tomorrow (5/21) to close with a song. The Meteor Man (2003) with Sharai Bohannon
I found my guest, Sharai Bohannon, very recently through a toxic scenario she exposed over the Twitter universe. While that was the reason I found her to connect, she’s a person who has SO MUCH to offer. Even beyond her very fun horror podcast, A Nightmare On Fierce Street. Sharai has lots of talents and she has a pretty extensive and successful theater background. She’s even had one of her productions put on in London. And, the mind in that skull of hers is quite brilliant and we had outstanding discussions of all things deep and all things silly and fun at the same time. I say this as a compliment; I had to cut a lot out of this episode. She chose 1993’s The Meteor Man to bring to the show and I was excited to revisit and talk about Robert Townsend on the show. The film holds up quite well and features a loaded cast and a filmmaker/actor/writer/producer powerhouse who maybe has drifted from pop culture awareness since the 90s, but one people SHOULD really look back to. A very exciting episode indeed. 0:01:00 – Sharai Bohannon Interview0:18:03 – The Meteor Man Discussion0:51:30 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 5/19 with the Out Now Commentary for Hannibal Rising (2003). Closing With A Song “Sweet Surrender” by Sarah McLachlan with Scott Mendelson
Here’s a little fun fact, returning guest Scott Mendelson is a big Sarah McLachlan fan! I specifically picked this week’s music video out with him in mind. And it was a more difficult task as Sarah McLachlan doesn’t quite sink her teeth into deep music videos too much. “Sweet Surrender” is easily her most interesting in both visuals and storytelling. It’s also a point of controversy as the director chose to go Alan Smithee on it. There’s all that and more in this week’s Closing with a Song segment. Due to copyright and fair use laws as well as Apple and Spotify sweeps for such things, I’m not going to roll the dice and be including a clip of the song in the episode. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) with Scott Mendelson
My original guest for the show, Forbes writer Scott Mendelson returns for the first time proper (AKA not a commentary track). And while not a “favorite” film per se, the second Angelina Tomb Raider adventure has had a significant resonance in his lingo if you’re a follower of his box office reporting. Scott coined the term “The Tomb Raider Trap” and has been using it since I met him back in the mid 2000s. Now, ask any serious film writer or reader and they know what you’re talking about. The term refers to The Cradle of Life and its less than stellar box office performance despite being a better film than its successful predecessor. The key is that the first one was so lousy that nobody was curious the second time out. But, I’m not sure Scott’s ever written or discussed the film itself in any sort of depth, so why not now? Here is to expand upon his thesis and we talk about pretty good summer actioner that nobody was really interested in back in 2003. Also stick around for the What Else segment as we have a lengthy chat and speculation about the CW’s Arrowverse and if the sun is truly setting on it. 0:00:57 – Catching Up with Scott Mendelson0:16:08 – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life Discussion0:55:44 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 5/12 with Old Space Show. Closing With A Song “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred with Stephanie Crawford
Yes. I’m going here. This is one of the staple songs from the 1990s. And one of the craziest and absurd songs to become a phenomenon. Everybody knows it. Everybody possibly knows where they were and what the first time they ever heard “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred. Stephanie Crawford returns and we talk about the equally silly and iconic video that went with the song. Stroll down memory lane as well do our little dance on the catwalk reminiscing about this crazy time to be alive. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) with Stephanie Crawford
The great Stephanie Crawford returns! Her first time on the show proper. If you remember, she was on the Holiday Gift Guide episode before. And don’t worry, we know you loved us discussing Blu-rays. I have a follow up to last week’s Warner Archive discussion, where we pore over a new piece of information regarding the potential future of Warner Bros that made its way around Twitter last week. Stephanie has brought to the table 1999’s cult favorite comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous. Largely overlooked, it aged quite well and the format for the film was largely hidden from marketing and at the same time, very informing of what would become television comedy for the next almost 20 years. And it’s just quite deliciously dark and funny. I have a lot of fun recording with Stephanie and her in addition to just being a swell human, her knowledge and passion for film as well as home video, makes her a great companion for the show. I hope you enjoy this latest installment! 0:00:48 – Catching Up with Stephanie/Warner Archive Discussion0:17:20 – Drop Dead Gorgeous Discussion0:55:58 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 5/5 with Old Space Show. Closing With A Song “Shame” by Stabbing Westward with Reyna Cervantes
And we’ve gotten to a very “one for me” music video. I was pretty big on what is now an obscure 90s industrial band called Stabbing Westward. They had a sound that really lent it to sounding like the perfect music for movie trailers. Some of theirs would be. “Shame” is a really awesome music video that rarely saw play, mostly during the insomnia hours of the night on MTV. It’s basically a mini slasher movie. I was excited to introduce my guest, Reyna Cervantes, to the group and video and get her reaction to it. Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970) with Reyna Cervantes
Did you know that film critic icon Robert Ebert once wrote a film? And that it’s one of the most highly regarded, wild and crazy, Russ Meyer cult films? Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is his satirical masterpiece he provided to the world of film. And it is quite a crazy midnight movie kind of treat. I was excited for my guest, Reyna Cervantes, to come on the show. But, I was even more stoked when she picked this film. Reyna is a one of the top horror film critics you’ll find around the bend, contributing to Bloody Disgustings, Fangoria, Screen Queens and so much more. She also hosts a podcast, Horror in Session where expertise and novice blend. This an absolutely fun discussion and I wound up leaving a lot of meandering banter in the episode as it was very Blu-ray and home video related. Since you all know that’s a passion of mine and (from what I’ve gathered) enjoy a lot of that talk, I decided to keep much of it in. Enjoy and definitely check out this movie if you’re into fun, crazy movies. 0:00:55 – Reyna Cervantes Interview0:28:33 – Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Discussion1:06:02 – What Else -Brandon The Brandon Peters Show will return on 4/28 with Old Space Show. Closing With A Song “Violet” by Hole with David Kronmiller
Time to talk some grunge! Courtney Love was a big figurehead of the female rock scene in the 1990s. A controversial one at that and had a legendary partnership with that of Kurt Cobain. “Violet” was the song that personally was my gateway into being a fan of her band Hole. David Kronmiller joins again to discuss this video. A video which has a LOT to express and many artful touches in tow. Moxie (2021) with David Kronmiller
David Kronmiller is a longtime friend of mine from those fabled days you’ve heard on this show about DVD and Blu-ray quality control. David it was actually one of the people in that field the longest when I’d met him and a person I’d spent many of late evenings testing and reporting on discs with. We’ve shared DVD war wounds together. Last year, David released the film Boris and the Bomb which he’d directed. And I had him on my old program and did a lengthy interview about it. But David has a pretty colorful career and is a fantastic interview. His paths have crossed working with many a famous name and he got a start as an actor working on Saved By The Bell: The New Class, of which he shares a lot about in this episode. The film he selected has passed Hubie Halloween for being the newest film discussed on the show; Moxie. Amy Poehler’s film is quite powerful and one that bears a lot of discussion. David and I share our own instances with high school bullying as well as an appreciation for Poehler’s skills as a director. As always, I’m pretty sure I consistently deliver you fantastic film discussion, fun interviews and wonderful guests on a weekly basis. And this week is one that I can’t help but stand back and recognize how far we’ve come with this show. And you the listener, thank YOU! Closing With A Song “Holding Out For A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler
Aw, not “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, Brandon? We’ll get there, folks. Don’t work, this Bonnie Tyler video is equally weird, baffling and not what you’d expect when hearing the song or seeing how its been incorporated into movies. It has nothing to do with footloose and I’m not sure the old west comes to mind when jamming out to it. But hey, here we are and we are going to ponder it all! The Losers (2010) with KJ
It’s been just a small bit of an adventure for KJ and I to line up our schedules to make this episode finally come to light. As early as last year, I’d reached out for her to come on. Now we are here and you can enjoy her discussing all the nifty stuff she does around the way. Including a brand new supernatural show Paranormal Cross Road. Which, you’ll hear me incorrectly say the name as “Paranormal X Road” at the top I decided to leave my gaffe in for your listening pleasure. KJ brings to the table a film I haven’t thought much about since it was released with The Losers. An A-Team’esque film that stars the likes of her beloved Chris Evans in a very against type role. It’s also a pretty solid fun be of b-level action and espionage mayhem to enjoy as well. We have a great conversation about many things with this film, especially a very nice Chris Evans aside and many things “kinda nerdy”. There’s also one off topic discussion about Doctor Who that you’ll have to wait for Thursday’s uncut version to hear.
